From the Editor Hello Reader, Welcome to the November issue of the Forest of Dean Magazine which is once again packed with events happening in and around the Forest, local businesses, interesting articles and community news. October saw the last half term holiday before the Christmas break and we are now steadily steering towards the end of the year, but for now let’s concentrate on what’s ahead of us and remember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes Night is back to bring us bonfires and fireworks – make sure you dress up warmly when you go out and don’t forget to keep your pets as far away from the noise as possible. Your vet can help with advice and medication for your pet so do give them a call. Another major event in November is Remembrance Sunday on 8th November. The Royal British Legion is hoping to once again raise millions with their Poppy Appeal, and this month you’ll see the theme of our front covers is centred around Remembrance Day – please support the Royal British Legion in any way you can.

This month, BBC Children in Need also raises much needed funds. Their Appeal Night will be live on BBC One on 13th November. Many schools, nurseries, playgroups, workplaces and shops in the area will be raising funds for this worthy cause – it will be a week of non-stop fun! If you have an event planned to raise money for Children in Need or any other charity, then don’t forget to email your story and pictures to office@glosdirectories.co.uk so that we can include them in the next issue. Finally, November also marks the 25th anniversary of the release of EMF’s first single ‘Unbelievable’. Read all about how Forest of Dean Magazine’s Gregg Upwards nearly got fired for playing the song on the radio. The full story is on page 38. Best wishes,
Vicky Muller

Auction Anecdote Although I am tempted to talk about all the exciting diamond and antique jewellery coming up for sale in our next antiques sale on the 6th November I am aware that I have given jewellery unfair coverage in recent articles. I am therefore going stick strictly to the boys toys this time as we have been quietly selling off a huge collection of tin plate cars in recent sales and they have been doing rather well. Tinplate toys were first produced in large quantities in the mid-19th century, primarily by German makers such as Lehmann, Bing and Marklin. The toys were made from thin sheets of steel coated in tin – hence the name tinplate. After WWII German production declined and Japan took over as the world leader exporting mainly to America (although toys were often marked as foreign due to the unpopularity of Japan after the war). In the 1950’s and 1960’s plastic began to take over for toy production as it was cheaper and safer and nowadays tinplate toy production is all but extinct. The reason the toys have been sold off quietly at Smiths is that they are very much an online ‘thing’ with collectors purchasing from all over the world including in our last sale from the Netherlands and Israel. The first consignment of toys were brought in by an elderly client for the September auction and the auctioneers were delighted to be asked to sell such a charming niche collection which literally just flew off the rostrum with very little trouble or inconvenience. They were then very surprised when the vendor returned a few weeks later with a second collection for the October sale and since then a further seventy plus vehicles have been delivered for the November sale. In the October sale prices were very keen and included £700 paid for an unmarked early tinplate ‘Packard’ and £780 for an unmarked Lyons Sweets delivery van. Another delivery van by Lehmann (one of the most sought after German makers) made £440 whilst an amusing tinplate tank with gunner moving in and out of the cockpit made £140.With such ‘stimulating’ results the next consignment are now all catalogued and parked up on the shelves raring to go at the next sale on the 6th November. Smiths next sale also features a large selection of silver, gold and jewellery just in time for Christmas gifts.Viewing is on the 5th November 10am to 7pm and on the morning of the sale.Tel 01531 821776 or see the website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for a fully illustrated catalogue. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Get on board with the county council’s transport team Calling drivers and volunteers to find out more about how they can get involved with helping vulnerable members of the community get about. Gloucestershire County Council are looking for new recruits in a variety of exciting roles across the county. The council would like to hear from individuals who are interested in helping others, and are willing to spend some of their free time with people who need some extra support in getting Page 8
around, for a whole range of different reasons. Community groups may need transport for activities such as outings, visits and luncheons. Anyone who is interested in getting involved, maybe as a minibus driver, taxi driver, volunteer driver or a passenger assistant should get in touch. It could be using their own vehicle, or driving a vehicle owned by the council. It could be travelling with passengers who need transport and extra support to attend hospitals, doctor’s surgeries, appointments, shopping, school, libraries or simply to visit friends to keep active within their community. To make it easier to fill these vacancies, the council have also
put in place a much more flexible system and also made it easier to join their transport team. This will help make sure the marketplace stays competitive to get the best quality and cost effective service. The council would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in finding out more about these opportunities. Please email itusupplierforums@gloucestershire. gov.uk for more details. Councillor Will Windsor-Clive, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to get involved in supplying services to the county council. “It’s great that we can provide work for local people and inject money into the county’s economy.”

Looking for Livery? Fairfields Stables is a family run business that we started in April 2002 to offer livery to people who may not have time to look after their own horses. We offer full daily care or the option for you to do it yourself, DIY Livery, for £37.50 per week. We offer large rubber matted and airy stables in either an American barn or a tradtional loose box, suited to the individual horse. We have all year round turnout in 76 acres of free draining sandy soil. But most important we have fantastic facilities for exercising your horse, whether it is schooling for dressage, show jump training or tackling x-country obstacles, two arenas, with mirrors to watch your progress, a full course of show jumps and a 200m canter track. We don’t offer riding lessons, but people will take part in lessons here on their own horses with visiting trainers. Many of our clients enjoy hacking, some competing, whilst others enjoy looking after their horse and spending time in the countryside. At this time of year the yard always becomes busier as many horses are brought into the stables at night as the weather turns colder and the daily task of mucking out begins. It is a good time to check that your horse’s annual flu and tetanus vaccinations are up to date, have their teeth checked and make sure they have a worm count to test for encysted worms; that can give rise to poor health and colic. At Fairfields we have a worming programme, we send the horse’s dung off for testing every 8 – 10 weeks and only worm if necessary, but as winter approaches we give an annual wormer against tapeworm and bots after the first frosts.

As the horses grow their hairy winter coats many owners will have them clipped, so that when they sweat, when they are excercised they will dry off quicker, this means rugging them up to replace that lost coat to keep them warm and clean! The latest rugs are breathable and made of advanced fabrics, but they do benefit from an annual wash, so make sure they are cleaned and returned well before you need to use them. It’s also a good time to check the fit and safety of saddles and bridles, check the stitching and particulary the wear on stirrup leathers. And many horses benefit from a tune up from a physio or animal therapist. Finally, check you have enough bedding to last you if your horse is stabled. Many stores offer discounts now for bulk deliveries and make sure you have ordered hay or haylage in, so you don’t run out if we have bad weather. Feeding advice can be obtained from all the main manufacturers and we even have had the big companies come out to weigh our horses and offer special dietary advice. Some horses will benefit from being fed an extra vitamin and mineral supplement or feed balancer when grass is short, especially if they are a good doer and don’t need a lot of seperate hard feed. Winter need not be a burden if you are prepared! Happy Hacking! - by Vanessa Roxburgh, Fairfields Stables Please mention Forest of Dean Magazine when responding to advertisers.

Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over Page 12
chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which
bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

November is a wonderful time of the year with the light shining on the exotic colours of the trees and shrubs. Now summer is officially over you may not go into the garden as the weather is colder and at times wet but that doesn’t mean you should leave it untended. Preparing your garden for colder weather is as important as maintaining it in the summer. There is a frequent nip in the air now especially after dusk. This is what gardeners call the beginning of the “tucking the garden up for the winter season”. RAKE READY Pick up leaves on a regular basis from all over the garden including the lawn if possible, using a rake or a leaf blower, if you have one. Bag them up and allow them to decompose for good free compost. Put a small amount onto the compost heap.
Small or large areas • Practical garden ideas & help • Design consultation • Planning advice • Planting & plant care • Pruning and maintenance Living with the grain of nature-rewards are great. The right garden has a beneficial effect, is an oasis of calm and a home in the natural world to make you feel good.

4 West Avenue, Drybrook, Glos, GL17 9HX mail2@thegardenlady.me.uk PREPARE FOR SPRING Despite plant growth being dormant during the autumn and winter months you need to take action to ensure your garden is in full bloom during spring. Now is an ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs in lawns, beds and pots. A good time to plant tulips is late November, also plant in trees and shrubs before the ground starts to freeze. Don't forget to fix plant supports on walls. If you want a hand preparing your garden for autumn and winter then give Catherine, the Garden Lady, a call on 01594 541118 or 07767690009.

Triangle Radio
We are a community radio fully run by volunteers who have a passion for radio and the community. We serve the Forest of Dean. On the 4th October Triangle Radio was broadcasting live from the Forest Food Festival. It was an excellent day and it was great to meet all the traders. We were fortunate enough to get an interview with Greg Wallace the Celebrity from TV’s Master Chef who opened the event. The presenting team managed to meet a whole host of traders and record many interviews that have and will be played out over the coming weeks; we also plan to add as many of these to our website in the coming weeks if you would like to hear them again or missed them first time around. Triangle Radio has also applied for a short term FM licence from OfCOM and we plan to broadcast from the 27th November for 10 days covering Cinderford and the surrounding district. If

Home & Interiors Buying a Bespoke Kitchen
If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen. Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress - you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst more costly, it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.
Why buy bespoke?
With an off-the-peg kitchen your choices are limited to a selection of door styles, carcass Page 18
sizes and worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, and can include extra-high base units, extra-deep worktops and a combination of different materials. You can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint, and you can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like - even special matching sockets can be fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’
All in the detail
With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall

cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality.
Working with a designer
Before contacting a bespoke kitchen company, start by considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be hand-built and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result. Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
The only known photograph of the death sentence being passed in an English court.
On 13th August 1964, Gwynne Owen and Peter Allen were hanged for the robbery and murder of a van driver. Owen was a mentally unstable drifter, Allen a feckless petty criminal. The murder was out of character, and most observers were surprised when they weren’t reprieved. But their case wasn’t all that unusual, and didn’t attract any more than the usual amount of media attention. There was, though, one extraordinary thing about Owen and Allen: they were the last people in Britain to be executed. On 8th November 1965 a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Labour backbencher Sidney Silverman received the royal assent, and hanging was abolished. This didn’t come out of the blue. Capital punishment had become extremely unpopular and its abolition was mostly welcomed by the public. Three high-profile miscarriages of justice – or perceived miscarriages of justice – had gone some way towards discrediting the idea and, to undermine it further, the public had lost confidence in the way the Home Office decided who should live and who should die. The first of the three cases was a straightforward wrongful conviction. In March 1950 Timothy Evans was hanged for the murder of his daughter Page 22
Geraldine; it subsequently emerged that both she and her mother Beryl were actually victims of John Christie, who murdered eight women in his west London house of horrors – 10 Rillington Place – between 1943 and 1953. The other two cases were more controversial. Derek Bentley was hanged in January 1953 for the murder of a policeman during a burglary. The actual shooter, Christopher Craig, was a minor and got life. Bentley was 19 and got death. Then in July 1955 28-year-old Ruth Ellis was hanged for shooting dead her violent boyfriend outside a Hampstead pub. He had beaten and deserted her, and she was in a hysterical and desperate state when she finally snapped. Both were guilty. But both had the public’s sympathy, and people expected them to be reprieved as nearly half of all convicted murderers were. And when no reprieves came, what really infuriated public opinion was that the decisions had been taken behind closed doors by Home Office officials on legal considerations alone without regard to public feeling. The outcry was such that the number of death sentences actually carried out thereafter fell to a trickle: in 1964 Owen and Allen were the rope’s only victims. Harold Wilson, Prime Minister
from October 1964, had long been a campaigner against hanging and supported Silverman to the hilt. The bill was intended to last five years – as, indeed, had two previous identical bills introduced by Silverman – and it wasn’t until December 1969 that it was made permanent and the hangman’s rope was finally put away forever. As many had predicted, abolition was followed by a steep climb in the murder rate, clearly proving that hanging had the deterrent effect its supporters claimed for it. But then the murder rate flattened out, then it soared again, then after peaking at over 1,000 in 2002 it halved in 10 years. Hard to say anything definitive about deterrence from a rollercoaster like that! What we have learned, though, is that the number of wrongful convictions such as those of the Birmingham Six is frighteningly high: one can’t help wondering just how many of those hanged before 8th November 1965 had done nothing wrong? There are, of course, some who maintain that the deterrent effect of hanging is so important that it really doesn’t matter that, inevitably, a few innocents will be killed; they might reconsider, perhaps, if they found themselves in Timothy Evans’s place!

2016 Age Concern Forest of Dean celebrates its Silver Jubilee! Next year Age Concern Forest of Dean has been delivering hot, freshly-cooked meals across the Forest to elderly people for 25 years. From a simple start in a Portacabin behind the Dilke Hospital it now operates from its commercial kitchen in Foxes Bridge Road, Cinderford. It is our proud boast that we are helping to maintain older people in their own homes, living independently and out of expensive Care Homes, thus saving the State many thousands of pounds. Deliveries are made by a team of volunteer drivers, without whom the service could not exist. The meals consist of 3 courses, soup, main course and pudding and are plated up in the client's own home by the driver. This is a great advantage to those who are disabled or not very mobile. At the same time the driver, who forges a relationship with a client over time, can report back to the Kitchen Manager, Debbie Greenman, if the client has a problem so that a relative or appropriate authority may be informed. A hard-working team staff the kitchen, cooking the meals and filling the 'hot boxes' in which the meals are delivered. Lunch Clubs across the Forest are also supplied with similar meals in bulk. Alongside the Meals Service, for over 10 years Age Concern has been maintaining a Befriending Service whereby lonely and isolated people are visited regularly by a volunteer for a chat and company. Most of our income comes from our two shops in Lydney and Cinderford, also mainly staffed by volunteers. Age Concern always needs volunteers for driving, for befriending and for the shops, so if you feel that you could help, please get in touch. Our Admin Assistant, Anthea, will direct your call on 01594 827927. 2016 will see a year of celebration by way of various events and publicity so watch this space!

New website encourages Forest families to learn more about their children’s centres A network of popular projects have made it even easier for local families to seek support with giving their children the best possible start in life. Barnardo’s manages children’s centres across the Forest of Dean, covering Lydney, Cinderford, Coleford, Mitcheldean and Newent. Managed on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council, they provide a wide range of free support and advice to parents of under-5s. Barnardo’s has now provided a new website to offer a single source of information for all of the centres, available at www.barnardos.org.uk/forest-of-dean-cc The website includes links to each of the individual services, including catchment areas, contact details, opening hours and maps, as well as the names and job titles of staff. Full details of all the activities are available, including dates, times and venues. Sessions include parenting programmes, breastfeeding support and learning through play, together with separate groups for dads and childminders. There are also links with education, employment and training, as well as with local health services. Barnardo’s children’s services manager Helen Yarworth said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for families to learn how we can help their children to achieve their potential. “We already produce newsletters but we particularly want to reach those who might be more nervous about coming into one of our buildings for the first time. “The new website allows them to take a much closer look at all of the free activities on offer before stepping through our doors and speaking to one of the team. “We hope local parents will be inspired to work with us to give their children the best possible start in life.”

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. The Success Destroyer Most of my working life is spent helping people to be happy and successful. My work is primarily in the corporate, private and public sectors, from the individual to the multi-national. I state this not as an ego trip, but as a firm foundation for you, my reader, to understand and take on board the magnitude of this message. There is not a successful or happy person in the world who consciously or subconsciously is not aware of the ruthless power of the success destroyer. It is a foul disease caught easily, highly infectious and can be difficult to eradicate once established. This foul destroyer is negativity, in all its various guises. This manifests itself with negative thinking, negative self-talk, negative communication, negative body language and a thirst for bad news coupled with enjoyment from other's misfortunes. Some sufferers spend an inordinate part of their life criticising, condemning and complaining. It is really very easy to find fault, but requires a bit of effort and imagination to find a better way. Very little criticism is constructive, mostly it is destructive. We all thrive on a little constructive criticism, but this can be “Oh so rare and caring”.
The world we live in is challenging though wonderful. Unfortunately, the balance is going wrong with so much news delivered to us 24 hours a day, and by its very nature news is normally bad. My brother Robin used to say “no news is good news”. Of course news and awareness of some of the horrors of the world can help to alleviate it or encourage action. The balance goes wrong however when there is little or no news, so it becomes sensationalised or contorted and exaggerated so everything becomes a disaster or crisis and we then become desensitised. So do make an effort to bring the pendulum back into balance. Be aware of the evil power of the negative and start by leading a life that is more positive and only allow the negative to play a small part of your life’s journey. So a few tips to get started: 1. The drink in the pub becomes half full, not half empty 2. Tomorrow will be partly sunny, not partly cloudy 3. When asked how you are, never again say “not too bad, thank you”. How about “I’m feeling ok”, “I’m feeling fine” or “I’m feeling good, thank you”. When we say “not too bad, thank you” we are implying either that we are normally bad, or we are surprised that we are not bad. Peugeot helps get Teenagers behind the wheel Peugeot has made it easier for teenagers in Gloucestershire to get behind the wheel by making its unique ‘Just Add Fuel®’ scheme available to 18-20 year olds for the very first time from local Dealerships, Warners’ of Gloucester and Warners’ of Tewkesbury. From September, young drivers will be able to benefit from the Peugeot Just Add Fuel® initiative on the Peugeot 108, due to a clever advanced telematics device which attaches to the on-board diagnostic port and tracks driver behaviour. Previously only available to drivers aged 21 or older, Peugeot has made strides in the motor industry by making the inclusive package available for young drivers on the Peugeot 108. Since its launch over five years ago, more than 27,000 people have taken advantage of Peugeot’s Just Add Fuel®. The innovative, fixed-cost motoring package ensures a single monthly payment which allows customers to leave the
showroom with three years’ insurance, servicing, road tax, warranty and roadside assistance for their vehicle. High on style, space and practicality, the Peugeot 108 is packed with a range of easy-to-use technology to improve life on the road. Offering an abundance of choice, drivers can choose from eight paint finishes, four interior ambiences and seven stylish themes on the 108. Marc Warner, Dealer Principal said: “Over the last five years, the Just Add Fuel® scheme has been recognised as a significant innovation in vehicle retailing and this has now been extended to help get first time drivers on the road in Gloucestershire. The Peugeot 108 is priced from just £248 rental per month and no initial payment is required. The monthly payments can be improved depending on variables like the amount of deposit paid, location, etc.
Just Add Fuel® with telematics is also available to Peugeot 108 buyers aged 21-75 who do not have two years’ no claims discount, or have held a full UK driver’s license for less than two years. Despite being part of the new car retailing landscape for five years, Just Add Fuel® remains unique to Peugeot and its customers. For more information or for details on any of the models in the Peugeot range, please contact Warners’ of Gloucester on 01452 529755 or visit the Dealership on Eastern Avenue, Gloucester. Finance Boost Your Income in Time for Christmas By Ann Haldon
With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. Use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. Generate extra cash on eBay and Amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget. Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that Page 32
you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. Use the popularity of local Facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon. Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve
carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter. Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand. You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round. These are just a few ideas for boosting your income – try picking one or two and you might find that you’ve got some money to spare in January. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/family/make-money

Tworivers Housing raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support Two Rivers Housing’s Worcester Road Community Centre, Hilldean, Cinderford held a Macmillan Coffee morning which raised a fantastic £320 for the worthy cause. There was a fantastic turnout, with over 50 local residents popping in for a cup of tea and slice of cake. Ann Pugh, Neighbourhood Assistant at Two Rivers Housing, said: “The event was a great success and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended and helped out on the day. What are the Signs of Dental Problems in Your Rabbit? It’s not necessarily tooth decay that causes dental problems in a rabbit. Teeth that grow at a rate of 2mm per week, combined with the wrong type of diet, are more likely to be at fault. Rabbits’ teeth should be ground down by their food, and if this doesn’t happen they can develop overgrown molars or spurs of enamel that cut into the soft tissue in their mouth.
Foods rich in fibre that also wear down the teeth, such as hay and dark green leafy vegetables, will stop incisors becoming too long. To help you spot the telltale signs of trouble, and deal effectively with your rabbit’s dental health, here are some of the signs to look out for. Lack of grooming Rabbits naturally groom themselves, and if yours has stopped grooming it can lead to a range of other problems including fly strike, a potentially fatal disease. Rabbits use their teeth during the grooming process, so lack of cleanliness on their part could mean that their teeth
PETS are sore. Loss of weight It may be painful for them to eat, resulting in a rapid loss of weight. The abrasive nature of hay in particular could be causing them pain. Drooling If your rabbit has started to drool, it might be due to dental problems. Also look out for wetness on their front paws. Your vet should be able to smooth any enamel spurs, and keeping an eye on your rabbit’s general behaviour can also help to pinpoint problems. http://www.rabbitawarenessweek. co.uk/health/dental/ By Ann Haldon

25 Years Unbelievable Ohhhhhhh! “The things you say, your purple prose just gives you away. The things you say - you're unbelievable!” There are just one or two songs a year that when heard for the first time (or in my case played live on the radio) make you think: “Awesome, this will still be played in years to come!” When EMF first formed in Cinderford in 1989, they called me to see if I would play their song on the radio. I was working at Severn Sound at the time and some of the boy’s mums came to the station to hand me copies of the song, reassuring me that I would love it. So I played it and what can I say - I loved it, and so did Gloucestershire! Unfortunately, my bosses didn’t. I soon received a written complaint for interviewing the band and for playing a song that wasn’t on the playlist. Weeks later the song became number 3 on the UK Charts and spread to Europe, New Zealand and Australia. In 1991 it made number 1 on the US Top 100’s. A few years later the band teamed up with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer and reached another number 3 in the UK Single Charts with a cover of the Monkey’s hit ‘I’m a Believer’. Shortly after, the band split before they reunited in 2001 to tour and write new material, but they were soon shocked to silence by the tragic death of their bassist Zac in 2002. In 2007 the remaining four band members

reformed and played several festivals, while guitarist Ian Dench continued writing songs for other artists such as Beyoncé and Shakira. More recently, EMF played further festivals and performed their debut album ‘Schubert Dip’ from start to finish. To say I’m honoured that I gave EMF their very first airplay is an understatement, it was worth every written warning I received for doing it! Fast forward 25 years, and the song is still going strong. Do I feel old because this was 25 years ago? No, I don’t, I just feel proud for helping put EMF and the Forest of Dean on the worldwide music map. - by Gregg Upwards
