Former Mayor selected for expanded Newent ward

Cllr Len Lawton after ensuring the B4215 is kept open

A former Mayor of Newent has been selected to fight for an expanded Newent council ward which now includes Taynton. Following a review of council wards which will see a cut in the number of councillors elected to Forest of Dean District Council later this year, Cllr Lawton, who has represented the Newent Central ward on the District Council for over a decade, was recently selected to stand for the Conservatives for the new Newent & Taynton ward. “I have served my community as a member of Newent Town Council, which included a stint as the town’s mayor, for sixteen years in total.”

“In addition to this I am proud to have been elected to Forest of Dean District Council the last three times,” said Cllr Lawton, who has also served as both Chairman of Licensing and Scrutiny during his time at the District Council.

“Throughout this time it has always been my priority to represent Newent and local residents’ interests and concerns in the council chamber, not the other way round which many councillors appear to misunderstand.” “It is this mindset that has meant 2

I have been able to deliver on the things that local residents care about, such as working with our MP to make sure that the B4215 from Newent to Gloucester was kept open after the Severn Trent planned on closing it for almost six months." The new ward of Newent & Taynton now includes Newent as well the rural communities of Taynton, Botloe's Green, Boulsdon, Anthony’s Cross, Kent's Green and May Hill Village. On the boundary changes, Cllr Lawton said: “Many have questioned the sense of linking very rural communities with the market town of Newent.

I agree with people’s concerns, however, I will make sure that residents in those communities are not forgotten about like Newent and much of the North of the District has by the current so-called ‘Rainbow Coalition' at Coleford.”

A Spring in my Step Hello and welcome to the April issue of your local community magazine. So, what does this month bring us?... well we have lighter nights, although losing an hour’s sleep on Mother’s Day wasn’t very good. We have the school Easter Holidays for two weeks, and of course Easter itself and the lovely long bank holiday weekend. My son, who is 15, has told me he is too old now for an Easter Egg Hunt. Yeah, right, in front of his mates he is too old; if I created one for him, he would happily go around searching for all the eggs, gorging along the way. April is a big month for me personally as on Easter weekend I will be celebrating a very big birthday and I don’t mean 21!

Turning 50 always seemed such a long way off - in my head, I am still in my 30s, yet here it is. I’m not giving into it but I am at the point

where I’ve stopped fretting about turning 50 and accepted that I am 50. Still, I do feel on the big day I’ll look in the mirror and see wrinkles that weren’t there the day before.

Undoubtedly a milestone like this does make you reflect. I’ve certainly become more appreciative of people in their 60s, 70s and 80s and can only hope to be doing as well as they are doing when I reach those numbers. I’ve been meaning to be more focused, to pay attention to everything and to take nothing for granted as so many people do not make it to 50. So I’m thankful to be here, leaving just one thing left for me to say: Bring It On!

THE MARKET HOUSE Newent Town Council’s Newsletter Message from the Mayor With the help of the Town Clerk, I was pleased to hold a coffee morning for our Market House Stewards. We are grateful to all those who give up their summer weekends to voluntarily steward the Market House and open it to the public. May I wish you all joy and peace at Easter.

A Duck Nesting Platform on the Lake Members of the Town Council were delighted when a local resident offered to construct a platform with nesting boxes for the wildfowl on our lake at no cost to the council. The platform was towed into position and anchored by our staff. We hope the residents of Newent and of the lake enjoy it. Newent Neighbourhood Development Plan The NDP Steering Group is currently undertaking research to form the basis of a big public consultation. Meetings are held on the second Thursday at 7pm. Further details from the clerk. Three Reminders Thursday, April 4th from 6.30pm: Annual Parish Meeting at Newent Memorial Hall. Saturday, 6th April at 10.30am: Great British Spring Clean. Meet at the Market House. Thursday, 2nd May: Elections for Town and District Councils.

For information about the Council, its activities and contact details for councillors, visit www.newenttowncouncil. org.uk or ring 01531 820638. A fuller version of this newsletter appears on our website. 6

Short Story

The Easter Hedgehog “Derek, what are you doing out here at the crack of dawn?” Kelly, with a milk bottle in each hand, was surprised to find her husband hiding under the carport. “Kelly, you nearly gave me a heart attack!” Derek gasped. “What are you doing up?”

“Something’s been drinking the cream off the top of our milk,” Kelly said. “I have to bring it in as soon as the milkman’s been.” “Just get under here quick.” Derek pulled her elbow. “You’ll give the game away.”

“What game?” Kelly huddled next to him.

“Operation Soak The Easter Bunny,” Derek smiled, rubbing his hands together. “You mean soak Carl?” Kelly sighed. “Honestly, when are you two ever going to grow up?”

Derek and his brother-in-law Carl had a long 12

history of playing practical jokes on each other. At Christmas Carl had decked Derek’s conifers in toilet roll, and on Valentine’s Day, Derek had filled Carl’s van with balloons. Derek knew a revenge attack was overdue. Kelly hugged herself to keep warm. “How can you be so sure he’s coming today?”

“Because the man’s an idiot,” Derek smirked. “He’s been dropping hints that I would be ‘hopping mad’ at Easter, and yesterday I spotted him coming out of the fancy dress shop in town with a pink rabbit suit under his arm.”

“You think he’s coming as the Easter Bunny?” Kelly laughed. “This I’ve got to see.” “But I’m ready for him,” Derek chuckled. “I’ve rigged up the sprinkler system on the lawn to full power, and I’ve got my hand on the outside tap. Hang on, someone’s coming through the gate now.”

Derek and Kelly held their breath as a dark figure crept along the path beside them.

WANTED

“I thought you said he was coming as the Easter Bunny,” Kelly whispered. “He’s wearing an old brown dressing gown.”

Patrick Oliver Antiques

“And what’s that mask he’s wearing all about?” Derek whispered. “It’s all brown and spiky.”

LAPADA member

“It’s a hedgehog mask.” Kelly frowned. “Perhaps his Easter Bunny costume didn’t fit?”

WISH TO PURCHASE ANTIQUES IN ANY CONDITION Furniture, clocks, silver, jewellery, books, watches, medals, toys, pens, etc.

The strangely dressed figure scurried under the washing line and stepped onto the boobytrapped lawn. Derek deftly turned on the tap. The hosepipe gurgled and the sprinkler system hissed into life. Their visitor leapt into the air like a startled cat as thousands of icy jets shot up his dressing gown.

GARDENING

Heavenly Herbs I’ve always liked to grow herbs in pots – they look pretty, and ornamental variegated forms are available too. More importantly, they can be kept in any welllit spot close to the house, ideal if your garden soil is wet and soggy, plus they are in easy reach if you fancy perking up the supper with some fresh, zingy herbs. If your life lacks a garden, then herbs in window boxes are perfect. Making a herb planter is easy and inexpensive, and the results should be long-lasting.

You need a good-sized container – terracotta is ideal for these plants, many of which have Mediterranean origins. You also need some good-quality compost, some horticultural grit and (of course) your favourite herbs. A local nursery or garden centre should provide a fantastic array of herbs perfect for 18

your planter at this time of year. Some of my favourites include variegated cream and green sage; ‘Tricolor’ sage, which also has splashes of purple on its leaves; golden lemon thyme (with a great lemony flavour); prostrate rosemary; chives; and golden oregano. Choose herbs you enjoy eating but opt for pretty varieties where available.

Good drainage is essential for a herb pot, so use broken crocks (such a smashed flower pots or kitchen crockery) laid loosely over the drainage hole(s) before you add compost and gravel. Always use proper horticultural grit and mix about one-part grit in with three parts compost. Positioning the plants properly within the container is important. The plants will get bigger, so allow them room to grow, but –

as you’ll be constantly trimming them throughout the growing season – planting a little closer than the plant label suggests should be fine! If you include a trailing or prostrate form of herb, it helps to position it close to the edge so it can cascade downwards. I also suggest you hide the labels around the edges of the pot, just beneath the soil, for later reference. Once all the plants are in position, fill in all the gaps between the root balls and around the edges of the container with the compost and grit mixture, firming it in as you go. Next, top dress the compost with grit, which helps to keep drainage good around the plant crowns, makes the planter look better and helps discourage weeds and pests. Next, water the pot well, top up the grit

layer if necessary, and stand your pot in a sheltered spot close to the house door or on your balcony or patio so it is easily accessible. If you find you’re not eating the foliage fast enough, you can freeze chopped herbs in ice cube trays with a little water for use later in the year when growth is slower.

WORDWHEEL (p. 10):

Auction Anecdote An elderly vendor was not exaggerating when he told me he had amassed an extensive collection of regimental cap badges over his entire lifetime. He was given the first one when he was just three years old. A Tank Commander, who was billeted with our vendor’s family during the war, had given his old cap badge to the young child as a parting gift, not realising he was inspiring a hobby which would last over seventy years! Other relatives and family friends had happily given their badges to the boy as they returned home from war and the collection had started to grow. As a young man, he had joined the army himself and continued his collection whilst in the services. Later, he continued buying at auctions, car boot sales, and eventually on eBay. However, he now needed to pay for a new roof and had made the difficult decision to sell. The collection included badges from all around the British Empire, including Canada, Australia, India, Africa, New Zealand and Europe and it was an easy job to divide it up into seven regional lots. Militaria buyers are very active online and so I was confident that if we showed all the badges in detailed photographs we would achieve an excellent result for our client. On the day bidding was fiercer than I could have possibly imagined with buyers in the room and online in the UK seeing off competition from overseas and giving an overall total of over £4,000. Smiths’ next sale is on the 10th of May and includes a special section for silver and jewellery as well as a full range of antiques and collectables. Entries are invited on the 9th, 11th, 16th and 18th of April (10am-3pm) or by appointment. For further information, please call 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

www.gl19boilers.com For our first event of this special year, we were very pleased and honoured to welcome the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire to our February meeting. He came to tell us more about the office of the High Sheriff, which is one of the oldest secular appointments in the land. He also spoke about some very interesting work he has done, from saving the Gloucester Cattle from extinction and using their milk to make the famous Gloucester Cheese, to recording (and growing) as many Gloucestershire apple varieties as he can find. We meet at Dymock Parish Hall on the third Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm. Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more details, please contact Ann on 01531 890438. 28

Health & Wellbeing of Rabbits this Easter

them against fatal diseases. For many years, the diseases we have been concerned about were Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD). Both can be prevented by a single annual vaccine that is readily available. In more recent years, another strain of RHD has become increasingly prevalent and this strain is not covered by the normal vaccine. It has been seen to be fatal (sadly, we have seen cases), however, there is an extra vaccine available to prevent this.

Many people will think about fluffy rabbits this Easter, however, rabbits aren't the easiest pets to look after. They require specially adapted housing, room to exercise and a balanced diet. We recommend rabbits to be fed on 80% hay and 20% pellets and fresh food. Their housing needs to provide them with plenty of room to hop about (at least 2 feet high, 2 feet wide and 6 feet long).

If you would like to speak with a member of our veterinary team regarding your rabbit's health or their vaccination status, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01531 632276.

Rabbits require annual vaccines just like our dogs, cats and horses to protect
