Less is more (sort of)! If you regularly read the editor’s letter, you’ll be used to seeing Vicky’s face each time. But Vicky has now moved onto pastures new and so this month’s letter comes from me, Anne Golldack.

a metaphorical diet and revamped the features. It’s not that there’s less, it’s just that we’ve asked our contributors to be a little more succinct in their writing.

I’ve actually been working at Glos Directories for many years and produce the magazines anyway so in many ways it makes more sense if I’m the one saying ‘read all about it’.

So as ever this month you’ll find groups and clubs, events, local news but also some new features, including a lovely short story.

There are some changes in the magazine this month to let you know about. Firstly we’ve found over the last couple of years we’ve been getting more and more local information, charity requests and groups features. We want to include it all – it’s hard to say no – but in order to do so I’ve been making the text smaller and smaller. A couple of people had said they found it a little hard to read, so we’ve gone on

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

Finally this time, a ‘thanks’ to our lovely advertisers who make this magazine possible. There are some great businesses operating in this area so please do use them when you can.

Short Story Precious By Jackie Brewster Dan leaned against a lamp post covered in posters, watching the house at number fifteen. The curtains were drawn and the place seemed deserted. If Alan was the creature of habit that Dan thought he was, any moment now he’d be returning home with his tray of chips and a battered sausage.

know you’re okay.”

Alan had dropped Dan’s sisterin-law, Pam, off on New Year’s Day, with the promise to come and collect her the day after. He hadn’t been seen since.

Alan’s face crumpled. “I’ve done something unforgiveable,” he said.

“Do you think they’ve had a row?” Dan had asked his wife Amy. “Pam’s being tight-lipped,” Amy said. “She just flops on the settee all day eating your chocolate liqueurs and sniffing.” Dan would never describe Alan as much of a catch, but he felt compelled to reunite these two lovebirds - if nothing else, just to get his sofa back. On cue, a shadowy figure crept through the shadows and slipped through the doorway into number fifteen. Dan crossed the road and hammered on the door. There was no answer. The letter box was wedged open with a copy of the same poster about a missing sphynx cat that had been stapled to the lamp post. He pushed it to one side and shouted, “Alan, it’s Dan, I know you’re in there.” There was silence. “I’m not interested in what’s gone on between you and Pam,” he called. “I just want to Page 4

The hall light came on. The door creaked open and Alan stood in the hallway holding his battered sausage. “Is Pam alright?” he asked, taking a bite. “She’s worried about you,” Dan said. “We all are.”

Dan’s heart sank. Was he going to be stuck with his sister-in-law indefinitely? “Tell me what it is,” he asked calmly. “I’m sure we can fix it.” “Pammy mustn’t know,” Alan said desperately. “I can’t promise you that.” Dan followed Alan into the lounge. “Just tell me what’s happened.” “I need more time.” Alan perched on the arm of the sofa and regarded his chips mournfully. “Time for what?” Dan said. “For the cat’s fur to grow back,” Alan said miserably. “I beg your pardon?” Dan said. “I went out for a few ales with Dufty after I dropped Pam off.” Alan ate another chip. “And the next morning I discovered I’d shaved Precious.” “Do you mean Pam’s cat?” Dan asked in surprise. “Yes, Precious the cat,” Alan nodded. “I’d shaved all her fur off. No idea why. I don’t even remember doing it.” His shoulders heaved. “I’ve made her a little jumper.”

Dan felt a powerful urge to laugh. “Alan, Precious is at our house with Pam,” he said gently. “You brought her in her basket, remember?” Through the cat flap climbed a fierce looking bald cat wearing a ragged tube sock. Dan looked at the cat, and the cat scowled back. “If that’s not Precious,” Alan said nervously, “what is it?” “It’s a sphynx cat.” Dan crouched down and examined the cat’s collar. “Her owners have been looking for her.” “I’ve shaved a stranger’s cat!” Alan wailed. Dan was about to explain that sphynx cats were supposed to be hairless when he stopped himself. “I can fix this for you. No one need ever know,” he said instead. “But first, phone Pam and beg her to come home.” “I owe you Dan.” Alan licked ketchup off his fingers. Staring warily at the cat he picked up his phone. Yes you do, thought Dan, and said, “A box of chocolate liqueurs would be a good place to start.”

Sweet Recipe Lemon Mascarpone Creams These quick and easy desserts make a delicious sweet treat for any occasion. Add the zest of 1 lemon to the cream mixture for an extra citrus kick.

Ingredients:

1.

• Juice of 2 large lemons

Mix the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

2.

Place the mascarpone in a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until soft and smooth. Gradually beat in half the lemon sugar mixture, beating well after each addition.

3.

In a separate bowl, whip the cream until softly peaking. Gently fold the cream into the lemon mascarpone mixture. If it is a little too firm, fold in 2-3 tbsp of milk or single cream.

4.

Dip four of the sponge fingers in some of the remaining lemon and sugar mixture then arrange in the base of four glass serving dishes, breaking to fit if necessary. Spoon half the mascarpone cream mixture on top.

5.

Repeat the layers once more using the rest of the sponge fingers, lemon sugar mixture and lemon mascarpone cream. Scatter the white chocolate curls over the top. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.

• 50g caster sugar • 250g tub mascarpone cheese • 200ml double cream • 10 sponge fingers • 2 tbsp white chocolate curls, to decorate (see tip)

Serves 4 Ready in 15 minutes

TIP

To make white chocolate curls, run a swivel-bladed vegetable peeler along the side of a bar of good quality white chocolate. Page 6

Newent students were over the moon to get a message from the International Space Station. Nine computer programming stars at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre took part in Mission Zero, a challenge to send a code to astronauts and computers on the ISS. The Year Seven students had to learn the Python programming language to try to communicate with the station. By cracking this coding, they were successful in getting through to Astro Pi Ed and Astro Pi Izzy, which are computers on the space station. Part of the challenge was, through communication with these computers, to read the precise temperature on the ISS. Students were also able to give a greeting to astronauts. The Newent students' message said: "Greetings from Newent”.

In return, they got a message back from ISS saying: "Congratulations, your code has been registered in space". Megan Wood, aged 12, is one of the young IT stars who took part in the challenge. She said: "It was difficult at first but really enjoyable once you got the hang of it. It was really exciting to communicate with people actually up in space.” Head of IT Sanjeeva Karunaratne said: “It was an excellent opportunity for our pupils to learn more about physical computing and create some code for the ISS. Auction Anecdote It has been a very eventful month at Smiths Auctions and after having worked incredibly hard to prepare a fantastic sale of over 1,000 lots, we were dismayed to suddenly be facing a forecast of snow and blizzard conditions. The timing could not have been worse and by Thursday morning it became clear that holding the sale on Friday was not going to be a sensible option. Thankfully, due to the wonders of technology, we were able to contact almost all our potential buyers by email and, of course, the website was easily amended to announce that the sale would be postponed until the following Monday. Viewing then continued for the brave-hearted during Thursday and two of us stayed overnight in Newent so that we could be there on Friday to greet anyone who had not heard the news. In the end, the weather was so bad nobody expected the sale to go ahead, but we were surprised by the number of keen customers who turned up to continue viewing despite the snow most were on foot but some came by car! However, with the road conditions deteriorating, my colleague and I decided to call it a day at 2.00pm. The silver lining to my story is that - having had the fully illustrated catalogue online for a further weekend, especially a weekend with terrible weather, we attracted a huge number of extra online buyers and, whilst we are normally proud to have around four hundred bidders online, we actually ended up with well over seven hundred! As a result of the increased internet activity, the sale sold like wildfire and perversely it turned out to be one of our best sales of the year! Top price of the day was paid for a fine three-stone diamond ring with a total diamond weight of 2.5 carats which made £4,000. This was closely followed by a lovely one-carat solitaire diamond ring which made £3,000, however, my favourite item in the sale was a pair of ‘pea-sized’ wooden good luck charms of a type worn by soldiers in WWI.The funny little novelties had glass eyes and gold arms and legs and were stamped to the backs ‘Touch Wud’ – the joke being that they are reaching up to touch their own little wooden heads. Estimated at £80/£120 they sold to a commission bidder for £280. Perhaps I should try and arrange a massive snowstorm every month! Smiths are inviting antique and collectable entries for their May sale on the 10th, 12th, 17th and 19th of April, 10.00am - 3.00pm or by appointment. Overhaul Your Lawn by Pippa Greenwood It has rained so much in recent months that my lawn has taken a battering, though the flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn you’ve walked on or moved a wheelbarrow over will have become compacted or squashed. Thus, the air spaces in the soil are dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So for green grass that’s ready for summer, it’s time to get to work. Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If necessary, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible. If your grass needs cutting, make sure you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this weakens growth and makes weed invasion more likely. After mowing, you can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. If only small areas are compacted, drive a garden fork into the lawn Page 12

every 4-6 inches or so, getting the fork tines to a depth of 4-6 inches, then gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each drainage hole. Next, mix some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) and brush across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. I recommend you buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollowtime aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This cuts cylinders of soil from your lawn and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in longer-lasting drainage channels. Any moss should be removed, so apply moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. The lawn will look worse initially, but it allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too.

Lawns that have suffered from waterlogging benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn food formulated to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. Granular feeds must be watered in unless it rains shortly after application. Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. To repair bald or thin patches, roughen up the areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs. Once all the work is done, keep off your lawn for a few weeks to allow it to take advantage of all that TLC and grow away really well. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Rotary ‘Frog Race’ evening for charity a great success

Last month's frog racing event, held in the Gambier Parry Hall in Highnam, had to be postponed for a week due to the heavy snow. Fortunately, when it took place on Friday 9th of March, the event was still a ‘sell out’. Club members and guests were crammed around the race track shouting encouragement to the ‘jockeys’ who were operating the frogs. There were six races and a ‘Gold Cup’ final. Frogs and jockeys were ‘auctioned off’ before each race and then the fun and excitement started. Thanks to our kind and generous race sponsors, and all those who supported the evening, the club was delighted to report that over £2,500 was raised! The money will be shared and donated in equal portions to the club's two nominated cancer charities - Prostate Cancer Research and the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. The actual frog racing was managed and operated by the Cotswold Frog Race Team who travelled free of charge all the way from Moreton in Marsh and who have a huge part in the success of this amazing event. Thanks also to Charlie Coats, President of Rotary@ Kingsholm, who stood in last minute as our auctioneer and very quickly emptied our pockets. Thank you, everyone! Rotary Membership: If you would like further information or would be interested in joining us, then please contact our Newent Club Secretary via e-mail rochehighnam@ btinternet.com or telephone 07794 644 380.

Marie ‘Inner Wheeling’ to Bournemouth

Marie Riley, a former orchid grower from The Scarr, is the current President of Newent Inner Wheel Club and a very keen cyclist. In March she cycled for two and a half days to the National Inner Wheel Conference in Bournemouth. No doubt that of the circa 3,000 delegates, Marie was the only one who cycled 140 miles to attend the event! For the entire journey on difficult snowaffected roads, she wore a high-vis jacket promoting the Inner Wheel organisation. She travelled with full kit in panniers, including clothing, a sleeping bag, tents, kitchen equipment, and the all-important puncture repair kit. Marie is an amazing person who thoroughly enjoys her sport and is happiest when wild camping. However, the heavy snow and severe weather conditions prevented her from camping on this trip. With her journey, she was generously supporting one of her favourite charities – the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, which is the nominated charity during her presidential year. Inner Wheel is a global women’s social and service organisation. Former President of the Newent Club Phyllis Charter will become the International Inner Wheel Vice-President in July. Home & Interiors Wooden Flooring

They are beautiful, natural, healthy, and get better with age – wooden floors are ideal almost everywhere. SAND BACK OLD BOARDS The simplest and cheapest option is often simply to sand back the existing boards. Not every floor is worth sanding – if there are too many nails to be removed, or the floor has woodworm, is uneven, or is of poor quality, replacing it may be better. Before sanding, mend or replace any damaged boards, preferably with matching second hand boards (new boards should be stained later to match), and hammer down protruding nail heads.

By Katherine Sorrell

USING RECLAIMED BOARDS The aged patina of reclaimed boards is beautiful, but they are not much cheaper than new boards, while common problems include woodworm, ingrained dirt and stains, damage, variations in thickness or colour, and the presence of old nails. Ask where the wood came from and how it has been stored – timber that has stood outside may be useless or would need to dry out considerably before reuse. Pine is cheaper than oak, and narrower boards are cheaper than wider ones. FITTING A NEW TIMBER FLOOR New timber floors can be fitted anywhere in the house, on solid or suspended floors, though they’re not advised for bathrooms or other wet areas as wood expands and contracts with humidity. You can fit a timber floor with underfloor heating, though timber does not give quite as high a heat output as concrete. When retro-fitting, it may be possible to lay new boards over old ones – but only if they are even, and usually covered with 18-20mm of ply as a base. Remember that your floor level will be raised and ensure you avoid any pipes and wires that run beneath the existing floor when fitting.

TYPES OF TIMBER The main choice you’ll be faced with is between solid wood, engineered wood and laminate. Solid wood is entirely natural and can be sanded again and again. It’s available as boards, strips, blocks and parquet. Engineered wood (sometimes called multi-layer or laminated) is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, with a balancing veneer beneath. A top layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding if necessary. Laminates generally comprise a resin-impregnated decorative paper surface layer (with photographs of real wood) bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. Cheap versions are not awfully durable, but more expensive versions are tough and have long guarantees. Timber floors are given ‘grades’ describing their appearance. They vary but are often called ‘select’, ‘natural’ and ‘rustic’ or ‘country’. ‘Rustic’ grades are the cheapest and ‘select’ the most expensive.

FINIShES FOR FLOORBOARDS

• PAINT: a great cover-up, available in a range of colours. • STAINS: may be oil or water-based. May still need a finish for protection. • WAX: gives a lovely sheen and smell, but requires regular re-waxing. • OIL: gives a natural finish and protect the woods, but again needs re-applying regularly. • UV-CURED OIL AND WAX: almost like lacquer, but with the look of oil or wax. • LACQUER AND VARNISh: available in hard-wearing matt, satin and gloss finishes, but don’t give such a natural finish. THE MARKET HOUSE

Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor – Cllr June Davies As a result of the public consultation in November concerning new office accommodation, procedures were put in place for the Council to make an offer on the premises available. However, the offer we were advised to make was rejected and so we are no longer in a position to move at the present time. The Town Clerk and I organised a coffee morning for the Market House Stewards to thank them for giving up their time voluntarily to show people around our Market House in spring and summer. The Town Council is very grateful to them for their hospitality to our visitors. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING – a change to the usual format and venue. The Annual Parish Meeting is your opportunity to hear about the work of Newent Town Council during the year in the ‘parish’ that its thirteen councillors represent. The meeting will be held at The Memorial Hall on Wednesday 11th April.

Before you throw, think mend & repair! On Saturday 21st April, the Chill Out Zone, 36 Broad Street will host Newent’s very own Mend & Repair Café, dedicated to reducing waste and saving money by fixing everyday objects which might otherwise have ended up in the bin - or at best recycled. A group of enthusiastic and skilled volunteers will be on hand from 10am – 1pm to tackle a variety of items: clothing and textiles, small electrical and electronic goods, computers, furniture and more. Local residents are invited to bring their broken, damaged or worn out items along and get them fixed by the volunteers and potentially learn new skills to enable them to undertake their own repairs in the future. The café will be selling hot and cold drinks and delicious homemade cake.

Every year ‘stuff’ will be thrown out, much of which goes into landfill. Yet the life of many items could be extended with a simple repair. This throwaway mindset is often driven by a lack of confidence in the ability to fix things, few specialist repairers, perceived expense or a belief that “things don’t last as long these days” and have to be replaced. The first Repair Café was set up in 2009 in Amsterdam and there are now more than 1500 worldwide. For more information please visit the Newent Mend & Repair Facebook page or call 01531 890 609. The Mend & Repair Café will operate every third Saturday of the month. Come and join us and if you would like to be a fix-it volunteer, please get in touch.

Newent Neighbourhood Policing Team Officers from Newent recently received some intelligence of a Cannabis grow with the Newent Community. Officers attended the address and found a number of cannabis plants and a male has been reported for the offence. This is the second warrant that police have conducted within the Newent area in the last couple of months. The information we have received has come from Crime Stoppers and members of local Neighbourhood Watches. This shows that if the police and the public are working in co-operation, then together we can make a difference to make Newent a safer and stronger community! If you would like to set up a Neighbourhood Watch within your area contact PCSO Joshua Griffiths: Joshua.griffiths@ gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk Page 22

You can also pass information anonymously by contacting the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. Drugs Talk at the Chill Out Zone On Wednesday 7th March, PCSO Joshua Griffiths took the educational drugs box to the Chill Out Zone Youth Club to educate the children about the dangers and consequences of drugs. Community Speedwatch We would like to thank the residents of Redmarley for setting up a Community Speedwatch. The Newent Neighbourhood Policing Team has also been out with the speed gun in various communities in the Newent District. Always remember that’s there’s a speed limit for a reason.

PUZZLE ANSWERS East & West Quiz The children at Pauntley School have been out and about in connection with their work on “Invaders & Settlers” and “Toys & Games”. Malvern Class went to Raglan Castle and talked about famous former residents – such as Henry VIII – and why the castle was built on the border between England and Wales. May Hill Class went to the Dean Heritage Centre where they found out how families spent their leisure time in the Victorian times, played with replica toys and learnt about Victorian parlour games. They also took part in a workshop where they got to make their own toy inspired by one of the toys from the Dean Heritage collection.

The Wildlife team competed in the district quiz and showed a lot of commitment and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, they came up against very strong opponents and didn’t get through to the next round, but are hoping for a place as highest losers.

Craft Workshops at Labels “We’re delighted with the response to our craft workshops at Labels," said Emma Robert of Ruby Florence Designs who runs the regular half-day events at the store. “We started off with just one workshop per month initially but our Easter wreath making proved to be so popular in March that we had to repeat it and do it on three dates.” “Participants who attended were all delighted with the skills that they gained, and everyone went home with the colourful wreath that they’d made on the day, something that they will keep for many years to come.” “Keeping in mind that not everyone is free to attend during the week, in addition to our Tuesday and Thursday morning dates we’ve added Saturday dates too for many of our future workshops.” “The theme of our craft workshops at Labels in April is making an embroidery hoop picture

and these will be taking place on Thursday 5th, Saturday 21st and Tuesday 24th April, 10am to 12pm.” “All of the materials required will be provided so all you need to bring along is you. Places are limited so it’s essential that you book your place in advance.” You’ll find the latest news and updates about the upcoming craft workshops on the Labels’ website: www.labelsshopping.co.uk/events You can book a place by phone or email: EMAIL: welcome@labelsshopping.co.uk TEL: 01989 769000

There's something going on in the attic! There have been some very unexpected things happening in the attic at Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye! ‘The Attic’ is the name of Labels’ brand new department and can only be described as a home emporium. It’s full to bursting of interesting and unusual (some even quirky) items for the home, including soft furnishings and occasional furniture, ornaments, picture frames, wall hangings and mirrors, not to mention gift ideas to suit all tastes and pockets and even a substantial selection of unique work by local artists and craftspeople. “We’re absolutely delighted with the enthusiastic feedback from our customers to date,” said Ailsa Macleod, Head of Marketing Page 30

at Labels. “We’ve spent months carefully and meticulously selecting the stock for this new venture. We wanted everything to have that ‘Wow’ factor and to fit comfortably in with the other items that we sell.” “Visitors will find that there’s a natural flow from our cookshop into The Attic and then on into bedding and curtains.” The Attic can be found on the upper floor at Labels Shopping.

The Federation Federationof ofNewent Newent The Schools Schools -- Fire Fire&&Ice! Ice! Memories that last a lifetime; inspiring children and embedding a love of learning! At Glebe Infant School the long-awaited burning of the replica model of London, that the children had worked on, took place and inspired the writing of some incredible pieces of work. The children had painstakingly created the most wonderful Tudor houses from cereal boxes. They had thought long and hard about their design and overhanging second storeys. They had worked hard, helping one another to construct and build them. Finally, they were topped with authentic-looking thatched roofs and painted with traditional beams. The model of nearly a hundred houses was fixed to a board and taken outside. The children had learnt about how, because of the

close proximity of the houses to one another, the Great Fire of London had spread rapidly and caused such devastation. The moment of truth arrived on Monday 5th February. Members of the local firefighting team here in Newent allowed the children to witness the controlled re-enactment of the fire using their model! ‘It was amazing!’ – Poppy ‘It was jaw-dropping!’ – Leo Meanwhile, in Picklenash School, our Y3/4 children were having fun at an entirely different end of the temperature scale! Investigating solids, liquids and gases and their relative properties, the children came armed with thick gloves to conduct their most recent experiment. Late in the morning, a Morrison's delivery bearing

trays of ice and salt arrived. The children were able to see the effect of combining the two to help create their very own ice cream! The extreme temperatures that were created amazed the children and more importantly, the ice cream that was created tasted great! ‘It was delicious!’ – Lily ‘It was really fun because we all got to work together as a team.’ - Marni If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Glebe Infant School & Picklenash Junior School. Please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - Tony Larner, Executive Head Teacher
