come to the l e August 2014 W edition of Newent Magazine
This editorial will be short and sweet as we've simply run out of space! Thank you to everyone who reads Newent Magazine, we actually had to turn some advertisers and articles away this month due to the magazine being jam-packed! We will increase our page count from the September issue so if you have a local business and would like to appear in this magazine in September, just give me a call for more information or visit the website to request rates. We will also have more space then for more community content and articles so please keep sending in your news too. Before I go, we require a few more distributors in Newent itself and also in Huntley, Gorsley, Dymock. Please email distribution@newentmagazine.co.uk if you'd like to join the distribution team. Best wishes, - Vicky (Editor)

8 year old wows audience at Live @ the Lake Concert
community
This years Live @ the Lake Concert took place on Sunday the 20th July at Newent lake. The event was organised in its entirety by Geraldine Gibbons, the Event Project Manager. Geraldine is an award winning student currently studying at Newent Community School and she writes as follows :"On the 20th July Live @ the Lake took place. After months of planning and organising the event came together for a successful afternoon. Everyone enjoyed a large variety of different acts ranging from the superb 8 year old guitarist, Kai Haines (who sang his own compositions - notably one about his sister) to Rosita da silva Teixeira (an extremely talented vocalist) and finishing with The Wirths (a brilliant band comprising ex-Newent School students.. Archie McGee,was the 13 year old MC for the day and confidently owned the stage and entertained the audience. The only concern was the weather but luckily, despite a small shower, we had nothing but glorious sunshine. We should not forget also the backstage work by students such as Adam Burkenshaw who provided and operated the sound equipment. I would especially like to thank all the sponsors for their involvement, funds and raffle prizes together with the Good news Centre's burgers, etc, without which this event would not be possible. The Town Council and Newent Initiative Trust must also be thanked for their support and the opportunity to run the event. We have had some wonderful comments from key people and groups in the town. Independent District Councillor Julia Gooch said "I am very pleased to have been able to help support these incredible talented young people to stage a one day music festival"
Martin Draper, Chair of Newent Initiative Trust, said "We are really pleased to be able to help make this exciting event happen as it offers the young people of Newent a fantastic opportunity to work together and enjoy a variety of music to share with our community". David Pettit, Chair of Governors at Newent Community School said "I am extremely grateful for the support of Newent Initiative and the Town Council, together with the staff and pupils who have invested time and energy into this successful event. I hope it will stimulate young people to take up music. Well done to all performers". Newent Town Mayor, Roger Beard, said "We are pleased to provide support again for such an opportunity for our wonderful talented artists to give our town and visitors such a wonderful concert". I would also like to personally thank the Live @ the Lake Team, including David, Julia and Adam. And finally I'd like to thank all those who attended, such as press (the Citizen) and Colin Thomas from Crystal Flame Photography (for providing excellent photographs) and to all friends, family and members of the public that came out into the sunshine, enjoyed the music and donated the cause to hep raise funds for the schools music department. I hope you all had a lovely day.

Easy Pickings In Your Garden By Annie Wilson
Expensive lawnmowers and garden tools, not to mention high end barbecues are valuable on the black market, particularly at this time of year. Why would an opportunist thief – and the large majority are - take the trouble to break into your property when there are easy pickings on the outside? Clearly you need to protect your possessions starting at the boundaries not just at the property. Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier. Keep them in good condition and make any repairs a priority. Spikes added to the top of walls and gates are good deterrents although perhaps not something you’ll want to use where you will be looking at them. Let Mother Nature lend a hand by using ‘hostile plants’ – ones that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Choose plants such as holly, pyracantha, berberis, rambling roses and blackthorn, particularly in the areas where it’s easy to access your garden without being seen. Early autumn is an excellent time to plant as the warm soil will help
to establish the roots. Protect the entrance to your property. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering the pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel could be enough to put them off on the approach. Motion activated lighting and well lit paths and driveways are a necessity. Garages and sheds should have locks on their doors. A heavy duty padlock, along with a hasp and staple would be ideal, although a determined intruder will still find a way. If it’s a concern then a metal shed should be considered. Valuable property that is kept outside should be protected in just the same way as other household belongings. Mark your possessions with your postcode and house number. There are plenty of ways to do this; engraving is good way of keeping your mark permanent. Photograph your property so that you can provide a good description should anything ever get stolen and to help aid identification. Ensure that your household insurance policy covers belongings kept in sheds and garages.
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts
A one-off investment to make your garden more secure can reduce the risk of burglary and is worth considering. Although hooking up CCTV to protect your garden gnomes may seem excessive, it may be of use if you have valuable items in your garden. Other investments that can help are getting your house alarm extended to cover your shed and garage, or buying a separate alarm for any outbuildings. Although it’s impractical to put all your removable items indoors each night, some sensible precautions will protect your barbecue, statues, pot plants and garden furniture. Basically, anything that is movable, however heavy, is at risk. Out of sight is out of mind, so try to keep items away from public view if possible. Finally, there’s one thing that many leave outside that is just an open invitation to a thief: a key. If it’s hidden under a mat/ the bin/a plantpot etc it might as well not be hidden at all. Install a lock box in a discrete place in your garden. It would take a very determined burglar to take the trouble to hack into your lockbox when there are probably easier pickings in neighbouring properties. Page 15

School's Out for Summer! Gloucestershire's Best Kept Secret Discovered at Maisemore. Family Fun for you, your kids or your grandchildren. Schools out for Summer and mums everywhere have probably already heard “Mum I’m bored” so many times that they would wish they could get £1 for each time it’s said. So with limited budgets, just how do we find the best days out for our little (or not so little) kids during the summer holidays? We sent Gregg Upwards to BUGSBOARDING to find out why everyone is saying “Miss this place out, and you will so miss out!” Pictures paint a thousand words, and from these pictures you can be sure that if you are a Parent, Grandparent , Uncle or Aunty looking for some fun and laughter with kids over 4 years old, you will love BUGSBOARDING and the newly opened Bugs Aqua Zorbing along with The Fete Games Family Challenge.
DIRT SCOOTERS
I met up with Helen Blackwood who took her son Jack and his friend Ethan for a day out to remember. In Jack's own words… "It’s Epic Mum!" Helen, Why "BUGSBOARDING"? I saw an advert in The Newent Magazine and knew my son Jack would love it. I called and when they told us we would be the first people to try the Aqua Zorbing and Fete Games Family Challenge, we were so excited! Talk us though the registration? AJ and Bugs were awesome, I’m a TA at a School so I know health and safety is paramount. These guys looked after everyone and they are all ATBA qualified. They gave a great introductory lesson to every newbie on every activity. How was your experience as a Mum watching on? I loved it, I took loads of pictures while Jack & Ethan did Mountain Boarding, Dirt Scooting and Grass Sledging. I chatted with other parents who all wanted to have a go too! Helen, you missed out on the BUGSBOADING, how was Bugs Aqua Zorbing and The Fete Games Challenge? Aqua Zorbing was amazing we all really enjoyed this new experience! The Fete Themed games reminded me of when I was a child, traditional fun family games such as Welly Wanging, Hoola Hoop, Egg and Spoon race plus a whole lot more. I will definitely be going again and will be taking my Dad who is 82, sadly I will have to hold him back from doing Mounting Boarding! I would like to thank all the staff at Bugsbording and Aqua Zorbing for making our day so enjoyable and safe.

SHEPPARD HOUSE Therapies Activities and Social Care for the over 60’s Telephone 01531 821227 for further information Our logo explains what our ethos is and we continue to deliver our services locally and further afield to ensure that everyone can be sure of getting the best we can offer.
Sheppard House is a pupose built day centre in Newent and a member organisation of the Forest of Dean Carers Partnership. Pippa English-Penfold, the manager, and her staff team are committed to supporting the clients, familes and carers who use the services offered at Sheppard House. Sheppard House has gained recognition for its quality services and standards in the North Forest of Dean area and is further developing its services for people with disabilities, long-term conditions and mild to moderate dementia. This includes hosting the local Memory Café and the Parkinsons Support Group. We also hold monthly lunch clubs, and the twice weekly Ivan’s Club which is geared toward gentlemen. We offer a range of workshops, outings, pampering, bathing, chiropody, hobby and crafts, wine and food tasting as well as games, some of them a bit more energetic! We provide locally sourced and prepared cooked meals on site in our 5* kitchen. We can help with transport through our very active Dial-a-Ride Service and we have a team of volunteer car drivers to help you attend appointments from hairdressing to hospital. One of our principal objectives is to reduce social isolation and to enable people to come together, make friends and to have a good time. During 2013 some startling research came to light about loneliness, just a few are mentioned here: • • • •
500,000 pensioners only leave home once a week Lonely people are four times more likely to suffer a heart attack and more likely to die as a result than those who are not lonely Lonely people are twice as likely to suffer from colds Over 2 million people aged 65+ in England are affected by depression

What happened in... ...August 1997? government said “non merci”. Can’t be all bad then, this colonialism, can it? 4th: Jeanne Calment, the oldest person in recorded history, died in France at the age of 122 years, 164 days. Mme Calment lived on her own until she was 110, and is the only person known to have celebrated her 120th birthday. Early on the morning of Sunday, 31st of August, 1997, I was driving into London on the A40 and the news bulletin came on the radio as I was passing RAF Northolt. Later that day a plane of the Royal Squadron would touch down at that aerodrome, carrying the body of Diana, Princess of Wales. 3rd: Two of the three islands of the Union of Comoros, off the eastern coast of Africa, near Mozambique, began negotiations in an attempt to return to French colonial rule, but Jacques Chirac’s
5th: With APPL just weeks away from bankruptcy Microsoft invested $150 million in the ailing Apple, which recovered and eventually overtook its saviour/ competitor. 21st: Typhoon Winnie killed 140 people In East China and injured over 3,000.
Be Here Now, the third album by Oasis, became the fastest selling album in UK history, selling over 350,000 copies on its first day. 24th: British computer wizard Gordon Spence discovered
A gallon of petrol was about 58p a litre The average price of a house was about £92,000
Three of the bestselling singles this year were: Men In Black - Will Smith Isn’t It A Wonder - Boyzone Block Rockin’ Beats - The Chemical Brothers
Taken by a crew member of Space Shuttle Discovery, this photo showed the extent of this huge storm: the central eye measured fully 8 miles in diameter.
2^2976221-1 (the 36th known Mersenne prime). Oh come on, you must know what that means. 27th: An international survey showed that Britain had the world’s highest rail fares. Some things never change. 28th: Thrill seekers on a roller coaster in Belgium were left hanging upside down for ninety minutes after the ride jammed. A little more suspense than they had bargained for maybe. 30th: An 83-year-old Greek man killed his wife because she ‘had a headache’. I don’t know what became of him after that but I like to think he is now with someone more compatible. community Summer sun – that annual “feel good factor” Don’t you think Newent looks lovely at the moment? The beautiful and so colourful flowers are looking tip top thanks to our town's Newent in Bloom gang headed up by the never stopping Lynn Ashton of Mementos Gifts. The hanging baskets add a dash of vibrancy and the bunting makes you wonder what is about to happen in the town – great to create a sense of anticipation as it draws people in. The shops responded positively as they always do to the shop window competitions and I’ve seen some lovely bright feel good windows along the theme of “pollination” that includes butterflies bees poppies and flowers - have you seen Errols Café ? All Seasons Deli? Pippins? Mementos? The Crusty Loaf? Take a walk round town to see for yourselves. Newent RFC Annual Family Fun Day This fun day is being held on Saturday 16th August at The Newent Rec 12 – 6 pm. Local ice-cream company Hillbrooks have confirmed they will be there to supply us with their gorgeous ice-creams – I for one will not be missing out on their divine Pimms sorbet – there’s a Jolly Jester beer ice cream to be sampled as well. While talking with Jenny who owns the business I found out that Hillbrooks ice cream is now sold at the new Gloucester Services on the M5 and is available there by the cone too – so perfect for those travelling through our county to sample the local goods. A great result for a local business based just up the road in Kempley! They are also doing stands at the Herefordshire Country Fayre being held at Sellack, the Monmouthshire Show and the Ludlow Food Festival – as well as these shows Hillbrooks supply a lot of local pubs and restaurants so they certainly aren’t sitting back waiting for things to happen. I’ve also found out that Celia’s Pantry products are stocked in the new farm shop in The Shambles – an excellent choice of product Char & Andy and I can recommend the sweet mint jelly.

Clare's Page
A monthly column written by Clare Page Places to go and People to see! Last month I visited The Old Farm Tearoom situated on the Gloucestershire Way on Barrel Lane at the foot of Mayhill – I’ve been meaning to get over for ages and was so glad I’ve now been - Liza does amazing afternoon teas and her homemade cakes are pure heaven - I felt it really was the most quintessentially English way to spend a lazy afternoon with a friend. It would be perfect to park on the Newent side of Mayhill – walk up and over the hill taking in the stunning panoramic views and then head down to the tea room – once you’ve enjoyed some homemade cake or a cream tea you can simply head back thus burning some calories along the way.
I was lucky to discover (quite by chance) Lauren Delaney – a local young artist who has created some absolutely stunning Mayhill paintings – the one called “Stay Close” says it all for me. Lauren will be holding an exhibition of her work in Raft in Newent during August – dates to be announced – I’m really looking forward to seeing more of her work at the exhibition. I also bumped into Chrissie recently from Bentley's Castle Fruit Farm, a must visit for me this month for local fresh fruit. I like to buy now and freeze some to see me through the winter. Lost... and Found Sheppard House attended the Ledbury Poetry Festival on Friday 11th July where they launched a collection of “found” poems written with poet Deborah Alma BY members
of Sheppard House Day Centre in Newent. The stunning black and white photographs were taken by Gerard Hughes. For any of you who like me have a loved one who suffers from Dementia or Alzheimers, it is a beautiful and emotional read but one you should do - for me it is even more amazing as my dear mum has her “found” memories now locked in print for us all to read. This project took almost two years to bring to print as it took time for the words of people to be gently collated and for Deborah to then write in a poem – but what a wonderfully amazing idea! This gem of a book is available for a donation of £5 towards the cost - further details from Sue Embrey - 01531 821227. You can pick up a copy of this book from the Newent association for the Disabled Charity Shop. For anyone else whose loved ones have their words in print here’s a thought for you – I’ve approached local artist Lauren Delaney and have commissioned her to take the words of my mums poem entitled “Air-Raid Shelter” and transpose to picture – for me this is such an important and exciting project so watch this space. Town Team Meeting The next town team meeting is to be held on Tuesday 19th August 2014 at Sheppard House. Doors open 6.30pm for networking and refreshments and the event itself is 7 – 9pm. What would you like to share? I’ve had some great feedback on this page and on the magazine as a whole so please keep telling the Editor, Vicky, what you think and share your ideas with her – I’m always happy to share through this page what you are up to or supporting with the readers of this fabulous magazine. It’s also great to hear how people now look out for the new magazine each month so they can see what’s been going on or what is to come in our community. Well that’s it from me now until September – have a great month! Clare Page also writes a weekly report about Newent in the Wednesday edition of The Citizen.

Our Young Jampreneurs! To encourage the children of Pauntley C of E Primary School to become involved in an interesting longer term enterprise, the Friends and pupils chose to grow and pick their own fruit to produce the School’s own brand of delightful strawberry jam to be marketed in local shops. It did not take long for local business to offer support. Fledgling local business Maggie’s kitchen, run by ex-chef, Stephen Reynolds (who originally qualified in a high pressure “Gordon Ramsey” type restaurant), volunteered his kitchen skills and hygiene approved facilities to turn the pupil grown and hand picked fruit into delicious jam. Stephen was able to enlist his existing local business contacts and confidently approach fresh local retail outlets to stock the jars. The school would like to thank:Brown & Greens of 3Shires Garden Centre, Andy Creese’s Butchers and Pippins Greengrocers of Newent who readily donated shelf space to allow residents and visitors to buy the jam. There are many other worthwhile projects, protecting and developing facilities for our lovely town, where the tagline of Maggie’s Kitchen “working together with local
companies to build a strong future for our community” seems just about right. Stephen and the school would also like to thank the following local companies for their part:-G.D.Parkers for the jars, Perpetua Press printing the labels and Brand Green Fruit Farm for some extra Strawberries.

Sporting Giants Showdown Newent Town AFC and Newent Rugby Club teams met at Wildsmith Meadow in Newent last month, head to head in a football match to decide who had the bragging rights to the best team in Newent. A beautifully sunny day brought out the crowds who enjoyed the whole event, including the Tug O' War. Both teams have been very successful in recent years and in the spirit of raising funds for charities, they met to decide who was best. An earlier football match between the Under 14's of each sport was won by the rugby team 5 - 1 so the future may be secure for them. It then became time for much anticipated main match. The rugby team, in a clear planned move, put extreme pressure on the football team from the start. This, together with using their strength to good effect, enabled the rugby team to race to a 3 - 0 lead within 10 minutes leaving the football team shell shocked.
Hero of the day and winner of the "Champagne Moment" was Sam Jackson from Newent RFC for his hat trick.
Sam receiving his bottle of Champagne
To make the point more forceful the Tug '0 War between the two teams was won by Newent RFC 2 - 1 Kevin Mason, Chairman of Newent Town AFC said "It was a great event, attended by more than 100 people. Well done to Newent AFC. We hope to make this an annual event. Whilst we lost to the better team in a thrilling match (in the sweltering heat as well) the real winners are the Stroke Fund and Church Roof Restoration Fund for whom the money was raised". - by Colin Thomas Crystal Flame Photography
The football team rallied and scored their own first goal to make the score a more respectable 3 - 1. Despite a great deal of pressure the rugby team hung onto this lead and unfortunately caught the football team on the break towards the end and scored to make the final score 4 - 1 to Newent RFC.

International Company Sponsors Local School Sports International company Cargills, who took over longstanding Freemans in Newent in 2008, are sponsoring rugby and netball in Picklenash Junior School in Newent. Cargills is a large international organisation providing food, agricultural, and financial products worldwide. After receiving a donation of ÂŁ1000 from Cargills the school purchased full kits for the rugby and netball teams for the school. Cargills will also sponsor the rugby and netball school teams and they will then be helping the emerging sportstars of tomorrow to perpetuate the current success of the rugby and football teams and to hopefully add more sports, such as netball, to this success.

Remembrance Painting Competition Newent's Picklenash School joined forces with Glebe Chapel and Trac - Tom Roberts Adventure Centre, to have a painting competition as a way of commemorating the start of the First World War at the Family Fun Day recently. Pastor Rupert Abbott, of Glebe Chapel, who organised the event and presented the prizes, said "This was done to promote community involvement at school level and I was pleasantly surprised at the number of entries (44) and the quality of them".
The paintings were created by children working together in groups of five and there were so many good entries that as well as 3 category winners there were two 2nds and two 3rds in each group and 3 highly commended. There were 44 different entries in all and prizes were awarded in Picklenash School last Thursday. The Chairman of Newent Branch of the British Legion, John Celino, also presented cakes for the whole school as

Do You Always Know What Your Pet Is Eating? There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of poisoning, these include: Pet owners are busy people, which means that it is difficult to watch our pets 24/7. As dogs and cats are naturally inquisitive, they sometimes eat things that aren’t always good for them. The list of potential poisons is endless, but we have compiled a list of some of the most common:
Chocolate – especially dark chocolate Raisins, sultanas, currents and grapes Antifreeze Human medications Garlic Leeks Lillies Pot pourri Rodent bait Slug pellets Daffodil bulbs Rhododendron Onions Algae in stagnant water There has recently been an increase in the availability of e-cigs (electronic cigarettes). These contain varying strengths of nicotine. There is concern that inquisitive pets may chew the refills or drink the liquid and they can ingest fatal doses. The symptoms your pet will show if he/she has been exposed to a poison, can vary depending on what the toxin was, but generally we see signs such as vomiting, diarrhoea, trembling, collapse and sometimes bleeding – however it is important that you seek veterinary advice immediately if you think your pet has ingested a poison rather than waiting for the symptoms to develop.

·
Keep pesticides and herbicides in a safe, inaccessible place.
·
Do not allow pets to drink from ponds/puddles that appear oily or otherwise contaminated
·
Be careful not to leave plant bulbs lying around
What to do if you think your pet has been poisoned? It is important that you remove the animal from the source of poison and that you contact the veterinary surgery as soon as possible for advice. It is more than likely you will be asked to bring your pet to the surgery for treatment, if this is the case, please try to bring the packaging along with you.

Newent in Bloom
community
On Monday 14th July the Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) came to Newent to judge Newent's entry into the Heart of England in Bloom competition. Newent is the only town in the Forest of Dean to take part in this competition and is therefore flying the flag for the Forest of Dean. Towns, villages, cities and neighbourhoods across the Midlands compete for gold, silver and bronze awards and Newent is entered in the small towns category. The judging covered such topics as civic pride, community participation, environmental issues as well as floral excellence. This year is special because it is Newent in Bloom's 10th Anniversary and the Royal Horticultural Society's 50th Anniversary, hence the theme of gold will be featured in the floral displays. Volunteers led by Lynn Ashton spent many hours planting and clearing areas all around the town to produce spectacular displays. "It is a gold award we are going for. A lot of volunteers from

8 to 80 have contributed time and effort to make look even more attractive than it usually does," says Newent in Bloom coordinator Lynn Ashton. The judges spent two and half hours visiting all areas of Newent and though this is now complete the results will not be announced until September.
Shop Window Winners On Sunday 13th July Newent in Bloom judged the Shop Window Competition. The competition theme was plant pollination and shopkeepers were encouraged to dress the windows to reflect this. There were two sections : 1. Items to be sold (Sales Category). 2. Items for display only (Display Category) Congratulations to the winner of the sales category, The Crusty Loaf Bakery and winner of the 'Display Category', Errols Cafe. Also shown is the entry of The Shambles which shows the high level of entries. - Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Home & Interiors Choosing & Using Paint
By Katherine Sorrell
working areas such as hallways or playrooms. For kitchens and bathrooms, consider specialist paints that are scrubbable and resistant to both moisture and steam.
Indoor woodwork and metal
This trend-setting wall is painted in Stiffkey Blue® No.281, £36 for 2.5l Estate® Emulsion, Farrow & Ball, 01202 876141; farrow-ball.com
A quick lick of paint on the walls and woodwork will brighten and beautify any home, inside and out. Our interiors expert Katherine Sorrell is on hand to help you choose the best type of paint.
Indoor walls and ceilings
Easy to apply and available in thousands of different colours, emulsion is ideal for walls and ceilings. Emulsion is always water-based, which means it is quick-drying, low-odour and cleans off the brush easily. Choose from a flat matt, standard matt or silk (softly shiny) finish. Generally, the higher the sheen level, the easier the surface will be to keep clean, but the more any imperfections will show up. Water-based eggshell has a low shine and provides a more durable, wipeable surface – useful for walls in hard-
Unless you have chosen an all-in-one, specially formulated paint, first use an appropriate primer to seal bare surfaces then apply a couple of layers of undercoat on top of the primer to give ‘body’ to the surface. Remember that undercoat comes in a dark or light colour, depending on the shade of top coat to be used. For your final coat, gloss is available in a variety of finishes, from low sheen to high gloss. It is always better to apply two thin coats of gloss than one thick one, the exception being when using non-drip gloss (sometimes called one-coat gloss), which is best used for pale interior woodwork. For central heating pipes and radiators, buy a heat-resistant paint which will withstand high temperatures without discolouring. Solvent-based paints are gradually being phased out, so these days the majority of wood and metal paints are water-based and brushes can be cleaned with hot water and detergent.
Outdoors
Masonry paints are designed for outdoor wall surfaces made from brick, stone, concrete, pebbledash and render. They come in smooth or textured finishes. For older properties, limewash is a traditional finish that has a powdery matt surface and a lovely depth of colour. Use it for interior and exterior limestone, lime render

and plaster, and even wattle and daub. For woodwork, use an exterior-grade primer, undercoat and gloss, just like indoors. For fences, sheds and garden furniture, choose from a range of specialist treatments, clear or coloured, which are designed to prolong the life of the timber. Restore old railings and other metalwork with exterior-quality metal paint such as Hammerite.
Specialist paints
There is a specialist paint for virtually every need, whether you want to repaint your kitchen cupboard doors, paint timber, concrete or vinyl flooring, or revamp the tiles in your shower. Look out for fire-retardant and anti-burglar paint, blackboard paint, damp-inhibiting paint, suede-effect and even magnetic paint.
What about natural paints? Natural paints are waterbased and made either with very much lower levels of petro-chemicals than conventional paints, or with plant-based ingredients. They are ‘breathable’, which is good for older houses, as well as kind to the planet and to your health. You can buy natural paints ready-mixed, in a wide range of colours, and even have them colourmatched to your desired shade. They’re just the same to apply as ordinary paints, with similar coverage, though paints made with natural oils tend to take longer to dry. Page 41

Newent Goes Onion Mad! The countdown to Gloucestershire’s biggest free one-day festival has begun! Home of the famous onion eating contest and show, Newent Onion Fayre is set to hit the town by a storm on Saturday 13th September. The public can expect to see many talented musicians, arts and crafts, fairground rides, street entertainment and of course, plenty of onions! Unlike previous years, there will be cookery demonstrations taking centre stage in Co-op car park along with the usual stands selling fresh local produce. Peter Pain, the chairman of the Onion Fayre Committee, gave an insight into the history behind the event and why it has been such a success: “The Onion Fayre originally began at some point in the 11th century. Onions would come from Evesham from the town and individuals from the forest would come to purchase them on the second Friday in September. There would be local festivities to celebrate the arrival of the onions. Unfortunately, for one reason or another it stopped, until a member of the public in Newent, Mick Evans, heard about the event and some individuals, including myself, decided to try and revive the event 19 years ago.”

Since then, it has grown bigger and better every year with an estimated 15,000 people attending the festival last year. “The Onion Fayre has a website and we have had around 300,000 hits from all over the world. It takes around 10 months to plan the event and it would be very difficult to do without the cooperation of all the businesses within the town.” Peter explains.
Sponsored by GSM and 3 Shires, the Onion Fayre will be opened by the town's very own Bert Bullock, who celebrates his 102nd birthday this year. With a huge 6 tonnes of onions grown at Over Farm being sold on the day, there are few that celebrate the vegetable quite like Newent! - by Nikki Timney

So, what can we expect from the Onion Fayre in the future? “Next year the Onion Fayre will be celebrating its 20th anniversary so there will be a

Newent Hockey Club Day Saturday 6th September 12pm, Newent School AstroTurf pitch Fun for all the family! Newent Hockey club prides itself on creating a truly family friendly atmosphere. With three men’s and three ladies’ teams, under 16s boys and girls, veteran, super vets and mixed teams there is something for all ages and abilities. It is not uncommon for three generations of a family to be involved in the club at any one time, even if one is in a pushchair on the sideline! A fantastic celebration of the club’s family orientated atmosphere is the tri-annual club day event where all ages come together to participate in a light-hearted tournament at the beginning of each term. The teams are mixed up by age and ability and there are always plaques for the winners as well as prizes for the youngsters. Hockey is an excellent sport for young children and teenagers to develop both social and sporting skills in a mixed environment. Discipline and composure are extremely important on the pitch where one angry word could get you sent off with a green card. It therefore creates excellent role models for children and teaches them important lessons. Parents are always welcome. and can become as involved in the club as they wish. For those that are too busy to do the running around there are always willing club members to help. A number of members volunteer their time to running the youth teams. The tri-annual club day event offers a great opportunity for those who would like to give playing hockey a go…. so why not come along? Whether you would like to return to the sport after a number of years off the pitch or have young children who you feel would benefit through involvement in hockey there is a place for everyone. The next club day takes place on Saturday 6th September 2014 at Newent School hockey pitch starting at 12pm. Visit the website for more information: www.newenthockeyclub.co.uk
