Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, I can’t believe it's December already and it’s that time of year again when we embrace Christmas and all the festive fun that goes with it. Whether you attend one of the local Christmas Tree Festivals, join in with some carol singing, take the children to meet Santa or enjoy a seasonal concert, there are plenty of fantastic events happening in and around the area for you to enjoy in the lead-up to Christmas. Make sure to have a look at our 'What's On' section towards the back of the magazine for more information. One of the festive highlights for me has got to be the annual school nativity play. It can be a bit of an emotional time for us parents, so make sure you pack the tissues just in case! December is a particularly busy time for our local shops, pubs, restaurants and garden centres, many of which are open throughout the season, so please support our local businesses as much as you can this Christmas and give back to the community. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Glos Directories! I can't believe I'm saying this but see you next year, when we will be back with the 4th-anniversary issue of the Newent Magazine. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

General Power of Competence
In late October we held a short tree-planting ceremony by the lake in conjunction with the Chill Out Zone, commemorating Shaun Payne and Shane Lewis McGill, two young men who had lost their lives in tragic circumstances over the previous year.
Road Safety The Town Council, which also covers Cliffords Mesne parish, requested hazard reflector posts for the Cliffords Mesne to Glasshouse Road
We are responsible for the general upkeep of the allotments, and have recently replaced the plot numbering signs. Meanwhile more evident to the general public will be the smart new information boards we have installed on the approach to the lake. They provide a map and explain a little of the history of the area and the efforts we have made to cultivate wildlife like bats, stag beetles and wild flowers. The Council resolved in October to adopt a ‘general power of competence’. This power, which is granted only under strict conditions, enables us to do anything that individuals can legally do, giving us the power to take reasonable action we need ‘for the benefit of the authority, its area or persons resident or present in its area'.
FURTHER INFORMATION Information about the Council, its activities, contact details for
councillors, agendas and decisions can be found on the website at www.newenttowncouncil.org.uk. Readers with questions, suggestions or complaints can also telephone the Clerk on 01531 820638 or email townclerk@newenttowncouncil. gov.uk. Our office address is: 1st Floor, Newent Community Centre, Ross Road, GL18 1BD and we are open to the public from Tuesday to Thursday, 9.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00pm - 4.00pm.

Newent Remembers Newent had a number of commemorative events this year, chief amongst which were services held at Newent Community School and St Mary’s Church.
Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre held their second annual commemorative service, which again encompassed the entire school, in the school fields. The event was attended by Mark Harper MP and was honoured by the attendance of war veteran Victor Urch who is a D Day veteran and, amongst other medals, holds France's Legion d'Honneur. Organised by the school and the local branch of the British Legion, it was very pleasing to see all the students and staff getting together to pay their respects. During the service, conducted by Reverend Simon Mason, Head girl Amelia Threadgill and Head boy Dafi Griffiths on behalf of
Amelia and Dafi reading out the names of the fallen during the School's Remembrance Service
the school read out the names of the ex-pupils who had fallen in conflict. Amelia and Dafi then took a wreath to the school hall and laid it at the foot of a special memorial plaque which commemorates those who attended the school and were lost in conflict.
The Remembrance Parade with Colin Thomson at the head
British Legion Branch Chairman John Celino presenting the certificate to School Head Alan Johnson
At the end of the ceremony the chairman of the Newent branch of the British Legion, John Celino, presented Headmaster Alan Johnson with a certificate acknowledging the funds the school had raised for the Poppy Appeal over the years. Led by British Legion Standard Bearer Colin Thomson, the traditional Remembrance Parade, which was supported by many people along the way, took place on Remembrance Sunday. It wound its way through the streets of Newent to St Mary's Church where the Service of Remembrance was held.
After the service followed the Act of Remembrance next to the memorial, which was supported by around 250 people paying their respects. Various groups from the town laid wreaths at the foot of the memorial. - Written by Colin Thomas

Hartpury CofE Primary School – Sport for All Here at Hartpury C of E Primary School, we pride ourselves on offering our children the best broad and balanced curriculum we possibly can. An integral part of this is through sport and physical activity. We are very fortunate to be able to give our children a variety of opportunities that help them develop not only their physical stamina but also their mental well-being, resilience and very importantly, their teamwork skills. One way in which we do this is through our strong links with Hartpury College. Every week a class from school visits the college to enjoy a PE session with the trainee students, Page 14 To advertise please
under the guidance of their tutors. The students plan, deliver and then evaluate lessons that are age appropriate for whichever year group they teach from our school. This, therefore, allows our children to receive high-quality and fun PE lessons from enthusiastic teachers of the future. In addition to our links with Hartpury College, the school also works with a professional sports coach two afternoons a week to enhance the teaching of PE and games throughout the school and offer professional development to our class teachers where necessary. All of the above combined with
an amazing amount of outdoor facilities that the children have on offer for them during playtimes and lunchtimes ensures that the children of Hartpury C of E Primary School are truly an active bunch! If you are looking for school places, we welcome you to visit Hartpury CofE Primary. To arrange a tour of the school please contact the School Office on 01452 700446.

Top Tips for the Perfect Christmas Tree – by The Natural Christmas Tree Company 1. Where possible buy your tree from a Christmas tree grower who is a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association to guarantee quality and freshness. 2. When choosing your tree, be sure to pick a healthy looking one with dark green needles (they should not be dull or dried up) and strong looking branches. This way there is a good chance of it still looking its best on Christmas Day. 3. Always consider the type of tree you want to have and the best time to purchase it. The traditional Norway Spruce, for example, should only be chosen from the second week of December onwards. If you want to put your tree up earlier than that, the best choice would be the low drop Nordmann Fir.
4. As soon as your tree is home, cut the bottom 5cm off it. This will allow your tree to take up water better as a layer of sap forms on the old cut, preventing water uptake. (Alternatively, you can ask members of staff at The Natural Christmas Tree Company to cut this off for you.) 5. Make sure you put the tree up in a waterholding stand. Keep the water topped up daily and the tree away from direct heat if possible. 6. For potted trees that you may want to plant out in the garden after Christmas the correct care is essential. Always leave the potted tree next to the house or in the garage to enable it to get used to the warmer conditions. This is crucial if the weather outside is particularly cold. The same is true for cut trees. 7. Decorate the tree however you want and enjoy the festive season!

New Software helps keep the community informed
Your Community Alerts is Gloucestershire Constabulary's new, free messaging system that enables residents, businesses and community groups to participate in a two-way exchange of information about what is happening throughout the county. Whether you live in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stroud, the Forest of Dean or the Cotswolds, you can receive up-to-date messaging about incidents that may affect you. Don’t worry, we won’t bombard you with every incident. You can choose exactly the type of alert you wish to receive. For example, you can help tackle crime by registering for witness appeals or keep ahead of those traffic jams by registering for road closure alerts. The aim is to send relevant information which is chosen by you and together we can make a greater impact on the prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour in our communities. The service is entirely free and you can receive the messages in a way that suits you. You may subscribe to alerts via text, the mobile app, a text or a voicemail. The choice is in your hands. If you are interested in the scheme please follow the link: www.yourcommunityalerts.co.uk Also just to remind everyone that PCSO Joshua Griffiths will be attending the following locations on the following dates: 2nd DECEMBER 10:00-11:00 – Newent Town Centre 11:00-12:00 – Junction of Lakeside & Friars Walk 13:00-14:00 – Junction of Foley Road & Chedworth 14:00-15:00 – Junction of Foley Road & Bury Bar Gardens 23rd DECEMBER 10:00-11:00 – Newent Town Centre 11:00-12:00 – Junction of Glebe Road & Blackmans Close 13:00-14:00 – Junction of Bradfords Close & The Tythings 14:00-15:00 - Junction of Watery Lane & Winfield Page 18
New Community Wellbeing Service Many things affect our health and wellbeing, such as where we live, how we spend our time, our financial situation and our relationships with friends and family. Sometimes we need some extra support, for example when coping with a short or long term health situation, or when life throws other challenges our way. The Forest of Dean Community Wellbeing Team is part of a county-wide service, jointly commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council and the Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, and may be able to offer support and advice to guide you during these times. This new service brings together social prescribing and the village and community agent service, with our former Village Agents now being known as ‘Community Wellbeing Agents’. The Community Wellbeing Agents will continue to work very much at community level whilst our Social Prescribing Facilitators remain working out of all our Forest GP surgeries. The service is available to anyone over the age of 16 years, living in the district of the Forest of Dean or who is registered with a Forest GP surgery. The new service not only supports individuals to self-care and self-manage to create independence and wellbeing but also supports our communities and our voluntary and community sector to build social and community networks by linking people and community services together as well as encouraging and supporting new community initiatives. The Community Wellbeing team is part of the Forest of Dean District Council’s Community Engagement Team and so benefits from a wealth of knowledge and understanding of community-based provision throughout the area. It is also well placed to connect people to access a range of issues such as healthy living, social activity and making friends in the community, help when caring for someone, support getting back into work, housing-related issues, mental health and wellbeing, bereavement support and much more. If you know of someone who would benefit from this service or if you indeed need support yourself, then please do contact us in confidence on 01594 812447/ 812399/ 810000 or email us at community.wellbeing@fdean.gov.uk – we are here to help you.

Get Real This Christmas by Pippa Greenwood
Christmas is well and truly just around the corner and whilst your thoughts may be on gifts, meals, crackers and cards, don’t forget the tree. And I mean a REAL Christmas tree, complete with needles and, if you choose the really traditional route, that wonderful aroma. For those concerned about the impact on the planet, Britishgrown trees are most definitely not an ecological disaster zone - think of them as a crop plant rather like a field of cabbages, except that typically Christmas trees will use less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many classic crop plants. To make sure you get what suits you best, there are a few things to think about before buying your tree. The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the traditional tree, with gorgeous, short dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable Christmassy aroma, but it is the most likely to drop its needles. However, if well treated it won’t perform badly and it is the lowest-priced of the real trees. The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) is quite similar to the Norway spruce and is the favourite festive tree in central Europe, with a distinct blueish tint to the underside of the Page 20
needles. Typically slender, it is a good choice for smaller sitting rooms and has decent needle retention - but no smell. The Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) is now the biggest-selling Christmas tree in the UK. Its shiny green broad needles are quite soft and almost impossible to shift, so it’s ideal for those who hate mess! The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less widely available, but its combination of good looks and needle-holding ability makes it worth considering. It has a narrower base than the Norway spruce so is also useful in smaller houses. So, how do you choose the best tree of the type you’ve decided on and keep it looking good? • Don’t buy a real tree too early. • Opt for a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association - look for the BCTGA logo. • Choose a tree with a good, full shape, not lopsided and with minimal gaps. Check the needles - they should be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour. They must be free from pests and diseases - avoid anything
yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits. Never buy an already netted tree since you can’t see what you’re getting! • If you buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - recut the end of the trunk and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. Remove any net as it is important to get air circulating around the needles. • When you bring a tree inside, avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source, and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir that is kept topped up. When Christmas is over, make sure you recycle your tree - many councils and garden centres now offer this service. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for great gardening gifts: a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (a perfect Christmas present, where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready vegetable plants in the spring and every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice), gardening tools, raised bed kits, GrowerFrames, signed books and more!

Halloween in Newent Newent’s annual autumn celebrations took place between the 23rd and 27th of October. They consisted of the regular Scarecrow Trail, which this year was accompanied by a Pumpkin Rescue Event, an Explorer Halloween Event by the lake and a Pumpkin Lantern Competition.
Some of the pumpkin entries waiting to be judged
The Scarecrow Trail was run by District Councillor Julia Gooch, sponsored by Smiths Estate Agents, Two Rivers Housing and Precious and Taylor in their Freedom Leisure, and Halloween costumes next supported by the Newent to their pumpkins Initiative Trust and Jane Stevens. The Young People of The Chill Out Zone helped with the coordination of the event. The trail consisted of various scarecrows, created by local stores and businesses, which were placed at specific points around Newent for children to find by following clues. It was very pleasing to see so many businesses take part and it must be said that some of the scarecrows were rather inventive, to say the least. The trail yet again proved very popular and due to half term, many children managed to take part.
Event' where children dressed up in Halloween costumes and looked for Halloween clues around the lake. Also part of the event was the Pumpkin Lantern Competition which enabled children to create their own lanterns and take them to the lake to be judged. All the entries showed wonderful imagination and both the competition and the Explorer Event were thoroughly enjoyed by parents and children alike. The rewards for the best pumpkin and for completing the Explorer Trail were hats, sweets and goodie bags which proved very popular. District Councillor Julia Gooch said: "This year saw the event getting bigger with even more people and lots of local businesses taking part. I would like to thank all those who sponsored the event, those who helped run it and those who took part, making it such a fun day. We are planning to be even bigger next year so if anyone out there wishes to help, you can contact me at Gooch Sports in Newent (opposite the Market House)." - Written by Colin Thomas
The Pumpkin Rescue Event, run by the Newent Initiative Trust, was a new addition to the programme. It was an attempt to encourage local cafés and restaurants, as well as the people of Newent, to use up pumpkins and squashes by making soups, pies, cakes, etc. instead of throwing them away after Halloween. Local eateries such as All Season Deli, The Buttery Tea Rooms, The Crusty Loaf, The Good News Centre, Erols' Courtyard Café and The Tudor Fish and Chip Shop took part. The prize for the eatery with the menu most enjoyed by patrons went to The Crusty Loaf which impressed visitors with their homecooked pumpkin flapjacks. The festivities culminated in Freedom Leisure’s 'Explorer

The Federation of Newent Schools Under New Management I thought it was about time, if not a little overdue, to introduce myself formally as the new Executive Head teacher of The Federation of Newent Schools. I was thrilled to be appointed the post earlier this year and am now really excited about the challenge that lies ahead. I feel the Federation has such huge potential and I am thoroughly looking forward to working with the pupils, parents, staff and Governors to realise this. This is my second headship after a successful four and half years leading Hartpury Church of England Primary. These years were extremely rewarding and, with a brilliant teaching team and supportive governing body, we were able to raise the school from its OFSTED grading of 'Requires Improvement' to 'Good' in just under two years. Furthermore, we were able to lead the school from a satisfactory grading in its Church School’s inspection to a grading of Outstanding. I was pleased to say that when I left the school in August 2017 it was riding high with great end of year results, a happy and effective staff and is now one of the most desirable schools in the local area.
When I had made the decision to take on a new challenge as a head, The Federation of Newent Schools really appealed. From the first moment I visited the school, I was struck by the warm and welcoming atmosphere that existed. It has the community feel that I was sure that I would lose moving from Hartpury but with all the benefits and resources of a big school. The schools are blessed with great resources both inside and out with large playgrounds, playing fields, gardens and nature areas. Furthermore, the school has an experienced and effective pastoral team; incredible and proactive special educational needs provision and provides superb music and sports opportunities for the children. But above all I was struck by the outstanding behaviour and attitude of the children – the children are so proud to be part of the school and speak incredibly highly of the work that they do there. As a new head coming in I am excited about the difference I can make and have already identified a number of areas that will help take both schools to the next level. The staff are committed and passionate about making the
schools the best they can be and I am looking forward to continuing to provide two schools that work closely with the local community, ensuring a quality education for the youngsters and building the schools into thriving establishments that everyone in the local area is keen to be part of. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Glebe Infant School & Picklenash Junior School. Please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. Tony Larner – Executive Head Teacher
Christmas craft workshops at Labels There's something really nice about handmade Christmas decorations which probably explains why record numbers have attended the latest craft workshop at Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye. Workshops in November have included wreath making using doilies, braids and fabrics, Christmas tree bunting, felt decorations and button hearts, all under the friendly expert supervision of Emma Roberts of Ruby Florence Designs. “For one of my workshops we used a polystyrene ring with squares of colourful fabric to make beautiful and unusual fabric Christmas wreaths,” Said Emma. “Everyone went home with their own handmade creation and with the skills to make many more at home for family and friends.” Page 28
The craft workshops at Labels Shopping started off running just once a month but due to their popularity, even more dates have been added covering all kinds of crafting activities. Home & Interiors Christmas Elegance
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s all too easy to go overboard at Christmas. This year, why not decorate your home with subtle glamour, creating a sophisticated seasonal backdrop to festive times with friends and family. this living room is welcoming and cosy, but also cool, calm and collected, thanks to a subtle colour scheme of greys and whites, together with touches of texture in the form of wicker, wool and wood. traditional nordmann fir, from £29.99; led warm white string lights, from £9.99; wool throw, £59.99; firwood star decoration (set of three), £44.99; Magical Hare cushion, £39.99; tree decorations, from £1.49; all dobbies.
Beautiful baubles will add class to your christmas tree. Walther & co bronze acorn and leaf decoration, £9.99, cotswold trading.
a simple white backdrop with natural, twining leaves is perfect for offsetting the glow of candles. large silver-dipped candle holder, £29.99; led glitter twig wreath, £39.99; medium silverdipped candle holder, £9.99; reindeer bell ornament, £4.99; decorated glass bauble, £3.99; garland (price and details on application); all dobbies.
Instead of a knitted or hessian sack, how about a pretty, printed fabric design? night owl christmas sack, £5.50, sophie allport.
an intriguing and subtle way to display the twinkle of fairy lights. Bo 80 led glassdomed cylinder, £13, B&Q.
a glimmer of metal is all the rage, and these minimal, slightly rusted zinc garlands satisfy the trend without adding any bling. Use along the mantelpiece, twined along the christmas table or hung on the wall. £29.95, decorator’s notebook.
Ideas for elegant festIve décor
• Too many colours together tend to look garish. Choose one main colour theme for each room and stick to it. This season, dark backdrops are very on trend, with accents of gold or brass, while white, beige or grey are classics that always look great, with dashes of red or green for that seasonal feel. • With limited colours, textures come into their own. Think linen, wool, fur (faux if you prefer), wicker and – this year’s must-haves – concrete and velvet. • For this look, avoid twee animals, anything knitted or made from felt, and all-out glitter (a little sparkle goes a long way). • Christmas ornaments tend to be collected over the years, and so can look rather haphazard if all displayed in one go. Carefully choose a selection that co-ordinates and – stay strong – put the rest back in the loft for next year. Page 30

The Shop at Bromsberrow celebrates 4th birthday Celebrating four years of community service, The Shop at Bromsberrow recently hosted a Cream Tea Party for customers, friends and staff, held to thank everyone for their loyalty and commitment. Spokesperson Jan Long who was one of the founders of the shop in November 2013 said: “When we started it was really on a wing and a prayer and we heard tales of community shops closing with
a year or two, so the early days were a real challenge. Yet despite our collective inexperience, the economic downturn and other uncertainties, we overcame the obstacles and achieved success on many levels, including going into partnership with Shabby Chic Antiques that has yielded financial benefit. Holding this 4th Birthday Party, at which everyone sang 'Happy Birthday', was our way of saying 'thank you' to all those customers who have remained loyal and to all our volunteer staff that give up their time to help in the shop, whether it is serving, doing the accounts, cleaning, ordering stock, serving in the café, we provide this much-needed service to this and the surrounding communities.” The shop is on the cycle loop and caters for groups such as Salter’s Hill, The Visually Impaired and others who pop in for refreshments.

Local people with disability benefit from Lodge lodgers! “When Newent Daffodil Lodge was formed just two years ago,” Lyndon Biddle told Newent Magazine, "the members asked us if they could meet here at Sheppard House.” Lyndon, who is the Chief Executive for Newent Association for the Disabled, based at Sheppard House, continued, “Having been agreed, little did we expect then the bonus which was to come our way!” Freemasons nationwide are celebrating 300 years since their Grand Lodge was formed and to mark the occasion, grants this year totalling £3m are being made to 300 local charities throughout the land. Collecting a cheque for £4,000 from the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which allocated £58,000 to six Gloucestershire charities, Lyndon added, “I would like to thank the Freemasons for their continued support. These are very challenging times and the financial help they have provided enables us to continue to provide much-needed support to older people.”
As well as the Newent disabled, Gloucestershire Young Carers, Stroud Court Community Trust, The Gloucestershire Society, The Jessie May Trust and The Willow Trust were all recipients of these grants. Newent Orchestra looks forward to 2018 Newent Orchestra recently reflected upon the year they have had so far and revealed their plans for 2018. 2017 has certainly been a busy year for the orchestra which continues to grow in terms of membership, performance, influence and popularity. A recent exciting addition is the newly formed “Newent Classical Brass Group”. One of the orchestra's highlights this year was, without doubt, the inaugural performance of composer Bill Anderton’s highly successful and evocative “Newent Symphony”. the Spring Concert, String Player Day, the 2018 Christmas Concert and more. The orchestra has grown a great deal over the years, outgrowing its rehearsal venue in Upleadon Village Hall and is already on the verge of outgrowing its current rehearsal venue in the Memorial Hall.
As a result, the orchestra has begun staging occasional Chloe Dunwell with orchestra members events and concerts at receiving her violin award What made the concert extra special the Newent Community was the fact that it was allied to that the orchestra has taken on is School Hall including the highly an art exhibition and competition grant funding to make funds available successful aforementioned inaugural which was based on the movements for the orchestra to encourage more performance of Bill Anderton’s of the Symphony, something which "Newent Symphony" earlier this year. applicants and to support local had not been done before. If you’re planning to buy expensive apps for a smartphone, tablet or computer, don’t go straight to the App Store and pay the advertised price: at this time of year there are lots of special offers on gift cards and you’ll often see Apple or Google gift cards on sale with discounts of 20% off or more from supermarkets and chains such as Boots. The discounts tend to be on multi-packs of cards (e.g. a three-pack of £15 gift cards), but more than one card can be used to top up your available balance. Thus you can use the cards on big-ticket items such as Apple’s £199 music program Logic Pro X, or you could just buy a selection of albums, HD movies or games. Moment of history in historic Redmarley D’Abitot The recent launch of the Redmarley Church Heritage Society marked a moment in history for Gloucestershire’s historic village of Redmarley D’Abitot. Held at the village hall, it provided an opportunity to invite those attending to join the newly formed Society. which show the extensive damage and the challenges that lie ahead!
Hilary Morton introduced the Society’s aims and objectives, which include encouraging support and funding for the restoration of St Bartholomew’s Church. The tower, in particular, requires urgent remedial work. Mr and Mrs Jakeman provided vital photographs,
Redmarley is steeped in history, having survived invasions, civil war battles, plagues and the Black Death. Never defeated, the village enjoys a measure of fame with ghostly sightings and notable visitors such as the Dymock poets; composer Sir Edward Elgar who married Caroline Alice Roberts (she used to live at Hazeldine House in Redmarley); and famous actress and singer Lily Elsie who married Major Bullough and moved from London to Redmarley’s Drury Lane (how appropriate!).

Walking Rugby comes to Newent A new type of rugby called walking rugby, that is becoming increasingly popular around the country, has finally come to Newent. A collaboration between Gloucester Rugby Club and Newent Rugby Club has seen the formation of the Newent Walking Rugby Club based at the Rec. The Club, started by Richard Stewart in August this year, already has 14 members and is steadily growing. Some of them have played rugby before but most haven't. It is not necessary to know anything about rugby in order to take part, as this game is simply a fun, gentle-paced walking exercise for men and women over 50, whether retired or not. It is akin to touch rugby in that there is no tackling and you must remember that you are not allowed to run! The club welcomes men and women whatever their ability.
While this is mainly a very good method of exercise, the Club, training and the games have also become a social event. The enthusiasm is in fact so great, that a match has been arranged with the Gloucester Walking Rugby Club (Gloucester Rugby Club's own Walking Rugby Team ) at the Rec on 3rd December at 1.00pm. If you would like to see Walking Rugby in action, then why not come along and support your local team? You will be surprised how easy it is.
Current Newent Walking Rugby Club members
Walking Rugby is a great way to exercise and definitely worth a try! Anyone wishing to join can turn up at the Rec on Wednesdays at 7.00pm in warm loose clothing and appropriate footwear. - Written by Colin Thomas

Auction Anecdote Once again I am going to be totally self-indulgent and simply choose my favourite item from our sale on the 10th November for my anecdote this month. The item in question was a beautiful Art Nouveau silver and enamel pendant which came into the saleroom with a small consignment of varied items from a local deceased estate. Unbeknown to the vendor the pendant was stamped on the back in tiny letters ‘MBC’ which stands for Murrle Bennett & Co which was a jewellery manufacturer formed by Ernst Murrle & J.B. Bennett in 1896. Today their designs are highly sought after and it is easy to see why as they are predominantly in the ever popular Art Nouveau style, using coloured enamels and stones to make very wearable and distinctive pieces. Unfortunately, this pendant had some minor damage to the enamel and since this is almost impossible to repair it has a considerable effect on the price which can be expected to be achieved.Taking this into account I gave the pendant an enticingly low estimate of £80/£120, knowing that this would attract buyers who might otherwise be put off by the condition. Sure enough in the run-up to the sale, a London jewellery dealer booked a phone line and then it was all down to a bidding battle on the day between the telephone and the internet. Ultimately the pendant made £260 to the telephone bidder – by no means one of the higher prices in the sale but a very pleasing result for a silver pendant in damaged condition. More unusual items which also did well on the day included an Inuit carved whalebone axe which sold for £800 and an early Marconi V2 radio which made £380. Smiths next sale on the 8th December includes a full range of antiques and collectables but also features a special section for antique and vintage toys – which always lends itself to a bit of fun and games! On a festive note, we are offering mulled wine and mince pies on the viewing day on the 7th December and it is a fantastic chance to enjoy a Christmas shopping trip looking for unusual and special gifts. The catalogue goes online on the 1st December at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk so that you can do a bit of window shopping beforehand. In the meantime, Smiths are now inviting coin and note entries for their specialist sale at the end of January. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

The History of Christmas Traditions By Alison Runham
Every year, some people mourn the loss of traditional, more faith-based Christmas celebrations. Yet most December 25th traditions are far less Christian and much more recently adopted in the UK than they may think. Celebrating on DeCember 25th Jesus’ birth date isn’t documented and the gospels of Matthew and Luke, written long after his death, give contradictory clues. Some scholars say the sheep on the hillside and the census suggest good weather, indicating spring to early autumn. So why is Christmas celebrated on the 25th of December? Midwinter festivals abounded by the time Christianity took hold. There were winter solstice celebrations such as Yule and Koleda, and the Roman festivals of Saturnalia (which included decorating your home with evergreens – sound familiar?) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, ‘birthday of the unconquered sun’, on December 25th. It was easier for early proponents of Christianity to introduce it into Page 42
these longstanding festivals than to persuade people to give them up.
mythology it’s also a symbol of love (hence kissing under the mistletoe).
The first Christian Roman Emperor, Constantine, began celebrating Christmas on December 25th in 336. A few years later, Pope Julius I declared it the official date to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Some scholars believe he also chose this date to honour Hanukkah and Jesus’ own religion, Judaism.
Christmas PuDDing The original ‘Christmas pudding’ was frumenty, a thin 14th century porridge containing raisins, currants, prunes, wine, spices, beef and mutton. However, by around 1650, people ate plum pudding, and by Victorian times, it was similar to the modern-day Christmas pud.
Orthodox and Coptic Christians celebrate Jesus’s birth on January the 7th - the ‘original’ December 25th. Our December 25th moved when we adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752.
the Christmas tree Evergreen fir trees have been used in winter festivals for thousands of years to symbolise the coming spring and everlasting life, although they were often hung upside down from the ceiling rather than stood upright. ‘Christmas trees’ emerged in the 1500s in town squares but took time to come into people’s houses. The Royal Family had one from Georgian times, but an 1848 photo of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family gathered around theirs popularised the idea.
Yule logs Today, Yule logs have been mainly superseded by logshaped chocolate cakes here, but neither are connected to Jesus’ birth. Yule logs were part of the Scandinavian Yule celebration, beginning at the winter solstice and running into January. Yule logs were burned to mark the return of the sun and festivities continued until they burned out. Celts also burned a Yule log, believing it persuaded the sun to return and bestowed good luck on those who dragged it from the forest. hollY, ivY anD mistletoe Evergreens were used in winter solstice festivals to bring good luck and signify the coming spring. The tradition of hanging mistletoe in the house is an ancient Druid custom to ward off evil spirits, but in Norse
a merrY Christmas Christmas wasn’t celebrated widely in the UK until the Middle Ages, when it was predominantly a time for merrymaking and feasting on animals too expensive to feed through winter. It was later banned for many years by the Puritans for its Pagan origins. It began to recover in Georgian times with a focus on charity and gift-giving, paving the way for the idealised Victorian Christmas described by Charles Dickens.

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Mental Health Award
Newent Community School, Picklenash Junior and Glebe Infants are celebrating achieving the Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning Mental Health Champions Award. Newent Community School is the first secondary school in the county to achieve the award and Picklenash and Glebe are one of only a small handful of Primary providers in the County to do the same. Newent Community School Principal Alan Johnson has hailed it as a great thing for children of all ages across the area. He said: “This award shows our joint commitment to supporting all young people, from the ages of four to 18, in an area which is crucial to their well-being and success but in which community resources are increasingly under pressure.” “We are delighted to receive this recognition for our outstanding practice in this area. Colleagues across all three schools have worked hard to ensure an exceptionally wide and effective range of initiatives to support young people’s mental health are in place”.
In order to achieve the award, the schools had to devise and implement an effective programme for supporting both students’ and staff mental health. At the secondary school, this included the One Act of Kindness Shared scheme, involving students considering and practising the benefits of being sensitive to, and connecting with, others through small but significant positive gestures. At Picklenash, initiatives included a whole school sports mentor scheme to highlight the benefits of play and exercise for mental well-being and encouraging older children to support younger peers to engage in sporting activities. Having been recognised for their pioneering achievements so far, the schools will continue to develop initiatives to promote mental health for young people throughout the community. Mr Johnson said: “While we are delighted with our increasing academic success, including that shown this summer with the new, harder GCSE qualifications, the emotional happiness and well-being of our students is of equal importance. We recognise that it is vital to give students access to emotional and mental wellbeing support in school, and are confident that this will give them a firm base from which to achieve even greater success.” Mr Tony Larner, who has only recently joined the local community as Head of Glebe & Picklenash schools, said: ‘I have been thoroughly impressed by the community spirit that exists within the Newent catchment and the close relationship that continues to grow between all the educational establishments. The achievement of this award really highlights the caring and supportive ethos that all three schools hold at the centre of their education and is something that all involved should be really proud of achieving and having recognised.’ The award was made by Fiona Quan-Lead for Health and Wellbeing (Education and Learning) Services for Children and Young People in October.
