From the Editor
Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and January sales have come and gone and the mild start to January was lovely, albeit a little wet at times. As we head into February, we have Valentine's Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine's Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a diet-related New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents or grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

APOSTLE OR JUDAS FIRES IN PAUNTLEY This is a special event that takes place in Pauntley (of Dick Whittington fame) every January. The ceremony, known as the ‘Judas Fires’ or ‘Apostle Fires’, was last recorded in England as being enacted in Pauntley in 1924 and according to ‘A Cotswold Christmas’ by John Hudson, the Twelfth Night Medieval custom of lighting fires to the Twelve Apostles - and then stamping out the one dedicated to Judas Iscariot - is one that has survived into living memory. The tradition was revived in 2006 and has continued exist to this day. It is believed to be a Christian tradition that appears to have originated in Medieval times when strip farming was prevalent and local peasants planted seeds before 12th Night. The ceremony comprised of twelve ’Apostles’, in the form of local ploughmen, who would light their individual fires in a semi-circle surrounding a larger fire representing Jesus. The last fire would be the Judas Fire and once this had been extinguished and the ashes scattered, the other fires would be studied to make tongue-in-cheek predictions about the forthcoming harvest from the way they burned. It is speculated that the ceremony
was seen at that time as an insurance against a bad harvest. As farms grew larger the tradition continued and changed and by the 1800’s it was also used to give the farm labourers cake soaked in cider as a treat. Today the tradition is continued in Pauntley with the ceremony now taking place on the Friday before Plough Sunday. As there are not so many ploughmen around these days, the ‘Apostles’ are volunteers from the parish and surrounding areas. The twelfth consecutive re-enactment took place in January this year and the current ceremony still holds to the tradition as much as possible. The fires are lit as tradition demands in a semi-circle, each of the 12 named ‘Apostles’ lighting their individual fires and a larger fire is placed in the centre as the ‘Jesus Fire’. Then, in turn, the ‘Apostles' each read out a short piece describing which ‘Apostle’ they represent. The vicar then leads the group in prayers before the Judas fire is stamped out with the embers of other 11 fires being placed on the Jesus Fire. It appears no official predictions are being made these days as we assume the method of divining from the fires has been lost in time! Afterwards everyone moves inside
One of the ‘Apostles reading their description. for a welcoming hot supper and – in keeping with tradition – cider. It must be said that standing in a field in the dark on a cold winter’s day is not much fun but it shows that tradition is still relevant today and the event is a moving reminder of the men and women who worked in the area. It is also a great opportunity to be thankful for the beautiful landscape we live in which has been shaped by those men and women. Descriptions of the tradition and ceremony can be found in John Hudson’s ‘A Cotswold Christmas’ and also in Fosbrooke’s 1807 ‘Gloucestershire’ as well as in Blount’s 1874 ‘Tenures of Land and Customs of Manors’. - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Velvet Underground by Pippa Greenwood
They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely you will call them anything so polite! So what can you do if your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and can make the lawn surface slippery. Mole runs beneath your lawn, flowerbeds or vegetable plots can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought, as the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. Try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is said to send moles scampering away. Similarly, you can plunge glass bottles into the soil with the neck protruding. The noise Page 8
and vibrations created as the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottles may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances, such as mole smokes, can work against moles. These are like fireworks and, inserted into the run, produce unpleasant smoke. However, with these and other smelly deterrents, once the smell has subsided the mole may return. Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. They must be correctly set and you must wear gloves as the moles will avoid the trap if they detect human scent. It is much more effective to employ a specialist mole catcher who is adept at trapping them and, since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. Some say that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles and as it does seem to work for some gardeners and the plants are
fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, bear in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Cake and Bake Raspberry & Vanilla Panna Cotta These delightful creamy desserts make the perfect Valentine treat!
Ingredients:
1.
To make the raspberry jelly hearts, line a small 6cm square dish with cling film. Soak the gelatine in a shallow dish of cold water for 2-3 minutes. Heat the raspberry puree in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Remove the gelatine leaf from the water and stir into the hot puree until dissolved. Pour into the lined dish and leave to cool, then chill in the fridge until set.
2.
When the jelly is set, use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to stamp out 4 heart shapes and place each one in the base of a small heart shaped ramekin dish (each about 150ml capacity).
3.
To make the panna cotta, place the cream, vanilla extract, lemon rind and caster sugar in a pan and bring slowly to the boil. Remove from the heat.
4.
Meanwhile, soak the gelatine leaves as in step 1. Remove from the water and stir into the hot cream until completely dissolved. Leave to cool for 30 minutes. Remove the strips of lemon rind and divide the mixture between two bowls. Stir a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl. Spoon the two mixtures into the ramekins, to give two with colouring and two without. Chill for 6 hours or overnight until set.
5.
To serve, cut and trim the halved brownies to make four heart shapes the same size as the ramekins. Dip each ramekin into a bowl of hot water for a few seconds to release the panna cotta then turn each one out onto a heart-shaped brownie. Decorate with fresh raspberries.
• 75g fresh raspberries, pureed
• 1 sheet leaf gelatine PANNA COTTA • 600ml double cream
• 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 pared strips lemon rind • 50g caster sugar • 2 sheets leaf gelatine • Few drops pink food colouring
TO SERVE • 2 ready-made chocolate brownies, halved horizontally
• Fresh raspberries
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour, plus overnight chilling Page 12

Banish Wi-Fi Woes Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi for short, is one of the best and worst technologies of all time. When it works, it’s brilliant; when it doesn’t, it’s infuriating. But solving Wi-Fi worries is often very simple. The most common problem is no signal or poor signal. That’s usually because you’re too far away from the router, or because there are obstacles between you and the router. Metal objects such as radiators are particularly bad, but older buildings with thick walls can be a problem too. The first step is to try moving the router somewhere else - the higher the better, because there are fewer obstacles the closer you get to the ceiling - but if that doesn’t work you could extend your network with a Wi-Fi extender. It picks up the signal from the router and re-broadcasts it, helping to reach places the router can’t.
Wanted: Postcode Pioneers We are looking for innovative organisations, businesses and residents within the Forest of Dean who have trouble finding others or being found using current addresses. Locating properties without street numbers has always been hard. The advent of postcodes and satellite navigation has helped but it is still, for many, a real issue with single postcodes covering many properties over large areas. The Hashpoint Project is a free, open database of geographic locations that can be self-managed by organisations, individuals and companies. It harnesses the most up-to-date satellite data and imagery to allow you or your clients to easily be found.
The system simply assigns a single letter (we call a hashpoint) to each property which, when combined with the postcode, can be used to accurately pinpoint your property, include relevant contact and delivery information and even additional locations such as road access, parking etc. The platform can be accessed online or via a mobile app and interfaces directly with google’s navigation tools. It is currently live in beta test phase and is being fully launched in January 2017. If an accurate way of locating others or being located would help you then get involved. For details or to register call 01452 760580, visit hashpoint.org or try googling GL141PQ#A.

Shopping with a smile on the outskirts of Ross on Wye
Santa's visit a great success! Santa Clause really did come to town in style in December and children of all ages flocked to visit him in his grotto at Labels Shopping on the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye. “I really enjoyed my few days at Labels and it was lovely to meet you all.” said Santa. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t stay for longer but it’s a very busy time of year for me and I had a lot of presents to deliver… I do hope that you received what you asked me for.” Santa was ably assisted by several elves from the Ross-onWye Rotary Club and various Pantomime characters and Festive Friends from the Ross-based young theatre group ‘X-entricity’.
Members of the Ross-on-Wye Rotary Club dropped in to collect their cheque from Chrissie Ellis who designed and built Santa’s Grotto at Labels.
The grotto itself was designed and built by Chrissie Ellis, a Labels colleague. Over £500 were raised and the proceeds are going to local charities supported by the Ross
Rotary Club who worked on the project in conjunction with the store. Labels Shopping is located just off junction 4 of the M50 near Ross-on-Wye. It's open 7 days a week with lots of free parking.

Home & Interiors Invaluable Decorating Tips By Katherine Sorrell
Planning changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms • Use a scale plan of your room with cut out mini furniture items, and move these around until you find the right positions. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. • For maximum light, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. • Avoid using a central hanging pendant as the only light source, but add in table lamps, floor lamps and wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • Consider ways to disguise the TV when not in use – can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary? Page 16
Kitchens • Have tall cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and plenty of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. • If possible, make worktops 700mm deep instead of 600mm, to give more working space and to better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose quiet appliances, and design so the washing up is hidden from the view of the dining table. • Paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint to give somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger.
so keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral and just change accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers and lamp shades, as necessary. • Cover boring walls with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, maps or wall stickers. • A high-level bed provides space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in tins, though beware of sharp edges. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.
Bedrooms • Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into hanging space plus shelves, drawers and shoe racks. Consider storage gadgets such as belt racks and pull-out trays. • Maximise space by building fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling. • Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security. • Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed free up space on bedside tables. • A blanket box at the end of the bed is ideal for storing bedding and doubles as a seat.
• If you’re on a budget, invest more in taps, shower doors and bath screens and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories. • Wall-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space. • Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls and punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches. • Lights on both sides of your washbasin mirror dispel unflattering shadows. • Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs…

New wildlife homes for Newent this spring New homes are on their way to Newent, but these ones are a little smaller than many might expect. Newent Town Council’s Jubilee Wildlife Walk will soon have new residents thanks to a selection of bat and bird boxes being installed along the disabled, access for all path. Local residents and businesses have come together to make most of a grant of £5,000 from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust which was applied for by town councillors in 2016. Members of Newent’s Dolphin Gateway Club, the local branch of Mencap, painted bird boxes at Newent Memorial Hall over the winter as part of the project. This followed the donation of the materials by Phil Jones Timber Merchants and production of the little houses by local resident Dave Warren. One resident who took part in the painting said: “This is a fantastic project. “I have really enjoyed taking part and I know lots of others have as well.” However the freshly painted bird boxes will not be the only part of the project to encourage local wildlife. Bat boxes, handmade and donated by local carpenter George

a great example of how the local community can work together.
“Everyone has been so generous” said Cllr Chris Howley.
Local branches of Ermin Plant and Buildbase assisted with materials for the project which also sees stag beetle areas installed along the route to encourage biodiversity.
The Newent Town Councillor added “this could not have all come together without the kind donations and volunteering made by so many people.” Even the groundworks for the project saw a contribution from local businesses to assist the Newent Town Council project. District Councillor Len Lawton (Conservative, Newent Central), who is also President of the Memorial Hall, said “This is

Auction Anecdote As we head into the early part of the new year I can now update you on my December sale which at the last time of writing had not yet taken place. Further to my excited predictions regarding a letter by Horatio Nelson we were delighted when it sold to a commission buyer for £1,100, whilst a fine silver plated miniature mantel clock made £1000 and a charming collection of Staffordshire fox head form stirrup cups made a total of £880. In the pre-sale Christmas hunt for gifts, private buyers were out in force and when onegentleman lost out on a beautiful diamond marquise cut ring for £1,350 he settled for a stunning oval diamond set pendant for £2000 instead. One of my favourite items in the sale was a large English delft plate naively painted with scrolling flowers and foliage surrounding a very strange animal in the centre which, we 18th century Bristol delft charger decorated squirrel decided after some debate, must be a squirrel. English delft ware was produced from the 16th to late 18th century and copied the slightly more sophisticated Dutch Delft (spelt with a capital D) which in turn was a crude attempt to copy the fine blue and white porcelain which was being imported from China. The white colour of delft was achieved by using a thick white tin glaze disguising a brown pottery body. Consequently, production of these wares ceased almost instantly in England the day Josiah Wedgwood invented white earthenware towards the end of the 18th century. This new material was much more suited to mass production techniques and even more importantly could be decorated by transfer printing rather than the traditional hand painting which was very labour intensive. The new all white bodied ware was also much stronger than the tin glazed pottery which had always been very prone to chips and breakages. Interestingly tin glazed earthenware is one of the few types of china in which damage is acceptable to buyers, since perfect examples are almost unknown. Luckily the plate in our sale was in relatively good condition with just a few rim chips, and together with its unusual and quirky squirrel decoration it attracted a small range of specialist buyers and sold for a pleasing £660 against a £400/£600 estimate. Smiths Next Sale is on the 3rd March and includes a special section for Medals and Militaria as well as a full range of antiques and collectables. now, he's locked in the price for a year. So, the sooner you act, the more you're likely to save. 3. Check multi-car policies if you've more than one car in the home. A few insurers offer special discounts if you have more than one car in the home – but comparison sites can’t include these deals, so do it manually. www.Admiral.com Multicar gives discounts of up to 25%, depending on how many cars you insure. You can also get discounts by linking the household standalone policies with Churchill, Direct Line and Privilege. The savings here could be huge. Equally, they can be a rip off; it’s about trial and error. 4. Comprehensive cover may be cheaper than third party. Bizarrely, merely selecting comprehensive means some insurers see you as a lower risk, and it lowers the price, so always check comprehensive too if you want the cheapest. 5. Adding an extra driver could cost less. Again, counter-intuitively adding another person to the policy can bring down your premium, as the average risk is reduced. It’s especially strong if you're a young driver adding a responsible older driver, but can work for others too as Bouncybubbles told me: "Quoted £900 from £500 previous year. By comparing
then adding my husband I got it down to £298."
or late at night, it can work well too.
6. Legitimately tweak your job title. You can't claim to be the Chancellor if you're a pole dancer (or viceversa), but many people have wide ranging roles. So by tweaking your job description you might find your quote is lower. Like @RPJ_Webster93 who tweeted: "@martinslewis Thanks to your 'reword job title' tip my car insurance quote reduced by £500." He legitimately changed his job title from 'council worker' to 'civil servant - cleric'.
9. Got special circumstances and struggling? Speak to a broker. If your circumstances aren’t normal, getting insurance can be tough. Often getting an insurance broker to find a bespoke policy for you can beat comparison sites. See www.biba.org.uk/findinsurance/ 10. Can you get cashback. Once you’ve found your cheapest policy check cashback websites like Quidco.com and TopCashback.co.uk to see if you can get any money back on the policy you’ve chosen if you buy it via them - this can be over £50, so is often worth it. Yet don’t let the cashback tail wag the dog. Choose the right policy first, then see cashback as an added extra (as it isn’t 100% guaranteed). Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. To join the 10 million people who get his Martin’s Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert.com/ latesttip
7. Don’t ‘pay monthly’ – it doesn't exist. Insurers may call it paying monthly, but actually they loan you the year's cost and while a few are interest free, most charge often hideous interest. The worst offender I’ve seen charges up-to-93% APR interest. So, check and if it’s costly, pay upfront if you can. If not, try to get one of the many year-long-plus 0% credit cards. Just ensure you pay it off over the year, then there's no cost. 8. Consider installing a 'black box'. This device is the tech (officially called 'telematics') insurers put inside your car to monitor how you drive and when. It's especially useful for younger drivers facing hefty costs via other means, though if your mileage is limited and you don't drive at peak times

Christmas at Hartpury C of E Primary School For many of us Christmas already seems like a distant memory – however with the cold, dreary January and February weather closing in, now seems like an appropriate time to share the amazing experiences the children had during our Hartpury School Christmas celebrations. The celebrations kicked off with two performances of our Reception, Year1 and Year 2 nativity performance of ‘Born in a Barn’. The children never cease to amaze me, at the age of 4,5 and 6, learning all of their lines, acting brilliantly and singing fantastically. Amongst the traditional characters that you would expect, we also had a rather bossy cat, a shy rooster and a number of very perturbed sheep. The best thing for me as a head is not watching the show itself
Page 26
but looking at the pride (and sometimes tears of joy) that is expressed on parents faces – always the sign of a really successful show! As a Church School our link with the local churches is an important one. The older children prepare a traditional ‘Lessons and Carols’ service and deliver this in front of an audience of very proud parents and grandparents packed into the pews. The service is always a special time with everyone involved in singing and making the event truly memorable. Throughout the build up to Christmas the children are involved in the usual activities such as parties, making decorations and making cards but what makes Hartpury School really special is the additional events that our parent community organise each year. The Friends of Hartpury School spend a morning decorating the hall ready for Christmas lunch and then provide table service to the children
with Christmas music blaring, crackers popping and even a visit from the big fellow himself. In the afternoon they open the Christmas grotto and wrapping room where children have the opportunity to purchase a small gift for their parents. What is really lovely is that the children get to choose gifts and think about the value of giving rather than receiving. The festivities were brought to a close, this year, on the final day in the afternoon with our annual carols around the tree sing along. Parents, grandparents, villagers and even ex-pupils travel from far and wide to pack the hall and have a jolly good sing song which really gets everyone in the mood! Here’s looking forward to next December – only 10 months to go! If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Hartpury CofE Primary. Please feel free to contact the school office on: 01452 700446 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher.

Does Your Pet Have Joint Problems? Joint pain can cause severe mobility problems that take away your pet’s joy for life, but it’s not just older animals that suffer in this way. Genetic issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia in dogs, or an old injury, increase the risk of them suffering from arthritis. What to look out for It’s fairly easy to spot the signs of arthritis in dogs, simply because they are in your company more than a rabbit or a cat, for example. These are some of the indicators to watch out for: • Stiffness when your dog gets up, or after a walk. • They walk with a limp, even if only for a few minutes. • Your cat’s reluctance to jump

PETS on your knee. • Your rabbit being less inclined to run around its cage. It can be particularly difficult to notice the signs of arthritis in a rabbit, as one of the ways they survive in the wild is to move less when they’re injured, so as not to appear vulnerable. Is there anything you can do to prevent joint problems in your pet? As far as puppies are concerned, it’s important not to over-exercise them while their bodies are still developing. Being overweight will also have a huge impact on your pet’s joints, so watching food intake is a key factor. The vet may prescribe an anti-inflammatory if your pet has severe joint pain, or glucosamine and chondroitin, as these are supplements known to help with mobility. By Ann Haldon

Newent’s Paint-Your-Own-Pottery Studio celebrates a very successful first year A year or so ago Sarah Brown found that there was not a great deal of entertainment for all ages, specifically for children, to be found in Newent. Having had experiences of pottery studios elsewhere in the country, Sarah felt that Newent would benefit from a studio providing that sort of entertainment. This led her to set up the family run ‘Paint Your Own Pottery Studio’ which is available to anyone who would like to paint a piece of pottery, either for themselves or as a gift.
chocolate, muffins, etc. are now being served. The studio consists of a nice, welcoming and well-lit room at the Golf Club. It is stocked with all the necessary decorating supplies and set up in such a way that children (and adults) are being kept clean. Visitors can choose their favourite item to decorate from a large number of pre-fired bisque pottery. This includes animals, mugs, bowls, money boxes, figurines, plates, etc. It appears that the dogs and cats are the most popular items to be painted. The decorated pottery is then fired and glazed elsewhere on site and can be collected a week later.
Since the studio opened, it has already proved very popular with all ages from small children right up to a 92 year-old, especially as hot and cold drinks, crisps,

The school’s annual musical this month is Bugsy Malone and to raise funds for both charity and the production, students and staff made a donation to dress up for the day in trends of the time. Sarah Brown says “This is a good fun place to come to – with or without children, especially as there is free parking. There is no need to be ’arty’ as we have stamps and stencils to help the decorating so anyone can come along and try it. We already have a number of repeat ‘potters’ and have had to extend the sessions for parties and organisations such as the WI. We can now go ‘mobile’ and have already taken the studio to Nursing Homes. I believe that the success of the studio can only be attributed to the fun people have when they come here”. Mrs. Hood added: “Our 2017 production at Newent embraces the now 40-year-old film while adding some unique twists. Look out for our female Fat Sam, our unusual police force and, of course, for lots of fun with splurge!”
Originally made as a film in 1976, with a cast entirely composed of under-16s, the musical is a tonguein-cheek love letter to the gangster genre, tracing the turf war between two rival gangs, one headed by Fat Sam of the Grand Slam speakeasy,

Tickets, priced £8.00, are available from the school’s Finance Office. Half the funds from the dressing up event will support the production and the other 50 per cent will benefit Rotary International’s Purple4Polio campaign which aims to eradicate polio across the world. Page 29

Keep your pet’s weight in check When thinking about your pet’s health, you should bear its weight in mind. In order to figure out if you need to consider changing your routines with regard to exercise, feeding and treats, it helps to get an accurate weight for your pet. We are here to advise you on the best way forward to help make your pet as healthy and happy as possible. At the surgery we have accurate weighing scales for dogs, cats and small pets of all shapes and sizes. Why not bring your pet into the surgery to see one of our
helpful nurses or vets for a weight check? It is also important to assess the weight of our larger pets and tools such as weigh tapes are able to provide a good estimate of weight if used properly in horses and ponies. Obesity in animals can have several negative effects on their health some of which include: • Osteoarthritis • Exercise intolerance • Diabetes • High blood pressure • Cancer If you know your pet is overweight here are some helpful hints when it comes to helping it shed a few pounds: • Cut down the number of treats given per day • Treats such as carrot sticks can be great for dental health as well as weight loss
• Consider changing onto a weight loss metabolic diet • Playing with your pet more frequently will not only give your pet mental stimulation, it will also aid weight loss • Only offer food for a certain period of time at regular intervals – not free choice feeding Alternatively, if you have any queries you can call into the surgery or give us a phone call to discuss any of your questions in more detail. We look forward to seeing you and your pets soon! Tel. 01531 632276

Gadgets They’ll Love Technology treats for the one you love this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids
from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than manmade bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.
buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, you might even get away with buying the pink one.

Motoring
By James Baggott
Super-Size America Doesn’t Extend To LA Auto Show
James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it. It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bitesized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously. Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio Page 42
SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a biturbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-dowe-need-it Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red,
which is redder than the last red. Understood? Good. Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so. Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor. However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulfliveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

Craig's Comment By living in a rural area many of us accept that we are not always going to be able to get the same type of services as those living in large towns and cities. However, while we accept that the amount of shops, frequency of buses, and types of roads available might not always meet the levels of those in urban areas, the response times of the emergency services when we or our family are in danger is something that many would not choose to compromise on. The staff that work for our emergency services are doing a fantastic job. While often working long, unsociable hours, their commitment to making people’s lives safer is never compromised. However, is there more that can be done to help them do their job? A recent request for information to the South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust led me to
find out that the time that Forest of Dean residents can expect to wait for an ambulance during a Category A emergency is much longer than for those living closer to Gloucester. In fact, the only postcode area in the Forest that regularly sees ambulance emergency response times met is Cinderford, just up the road from both the Dilke Hospital and the Ambulance Station. Up until as recently as 2006 there was another station in which local ambulances were held. However, Newent’s joint ambulance and fire station last saw ambulances there in April 2006. Newent was the only station to be closed in Gloucestershire during the 2006 reorganisation. Could Newent, located in approximately equal distance between Gloucester and Cinderford, be the answer to the Forest’s slower ambulance response times? Although the Ambulance Trust keeps vehicles located near to and in the Forest, at peak times the majority are nearer Gloucester and Cheltenham.
What is more, ambulances located near to the district are also frequently called to go back towards Gloucester on emergency calls, potentially leaving residents in the Forest again with a longer wait. I have been holding discussions with South Western Ambulance Foundation Trust representatives about their emergency response times for the area. These talks are continuing and they have reiterated to me that they have been putting new policies and actions in place since April 2016. I hope to give a further update on what is being done to help people locally when there is an emergency, and I will once again be asking the Ambulance Trust – could the return of Newent Ambulance Station be the answer? The Rotary Club's “Purple4Polio” Campaign In November 2016 Newent Rotary Club planted 2,500 bulbs around Newent Lake. The planting of these bulbs was a collaboration between the Newent Rotary Club and the Aston Project and was facilitated by Newent in Bloom. The plants placed around the Lake were mostly crocuses with some wild Newent Daffodils in between. They were planted along the front of the Jubilee Wild Border which will provide a stunning ribbon of purple all along the border come spring. The planting was initiated by the Newent Rotary Club and was part of the Rotary International's 30 year "Purple4Polio" campaign which aims to provide communities with ideas and opportunities to get involved with ridding the world of polio. The Aston Project is a police-run project for young people (aged 9-17) who enjoy carrying out projects and helping the community. Taking part in activities Page 44

Those little extras to give parents a helping hand
After-school clubs are always very popular with pupils at Pauntley Primary School. They are open to all children and not restricted by numbers. The children can sign up at the start of term to stay at school from 3.15pm till 4.30pm from Monday to Thursday. On Mondays the pupils can take part in Arts and Crafts, on Tuesdays a specialist coach runs a Sports Club, on Wednesdays there is a very busy Wildlife Club and on Thursdays the children have the chance to enjoy more free and creative play outside. They can also build their own creations in Lego and Knexx on Thursdays. In addition to this, the Early Risers Club runs from 8.00am each morning, allowing children to be dropped off at school earlier in the day, offering parents greater flexibility. For pre-schoolers Pauntley offers a popular “Stay and Play” Playgroup on alternate Friday afternoons. The little ones join the infant class to play and find out a bit more about life at school. It’s particularly good for younger siblings who get a chance to see what their brothers and sisters do in school. Parent, Stephen Reynolds of Maggie’s Kitchen, helped the children make some delicious blackberry jam to sell last Autumn. The blackberries were gathered by the children during school, following a tradition at Pauntley that started in the First World War, when children gathered blackberries to turn into jam for the troops. Stephen has now turned the children’s hard work into cash and supplied super smart Pauntley aprons for each child. The aprons, for use in class activities, were funded by the jam sales. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. If you want to visit our school, you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward, at Pauntley School Office on 01531 820053. Pager Turners Spring may be just around the corner, but there’s still plenty of temptation to lock the cold, dark winter out and curl up with a book. From gripping psychological thrillers to folklore inspired tales, these books will keep you turning the pages late into the night. The Silkworm – Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) Private Investigator Cormoran Strike is back. This time he’s been asked to find a missing writer. But when the writer turns up dead, his wife, Cormoran’s client, comes under suspicion. Are the clues to the real killer hidden in the writer’s last, unpublished book? A gripping crime novel with echoes of hard-boiled American classics, The Silkworm has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The Bear and The Nightingale – Katherine Arden In the wilds of Russia, folklore and fairy tales do battle with the Church for the villagers’ hearts and minds. As an enigmatic young priest starts to turn his flock away from their centuriesold traditions, the spirit guardians of the homes lose their strength, and darkness threatens to take hold. The only one who might be able to save the villagers is the girl they’ve turned against. Lyrical and beautiful, The Bear and The Nightingale is captivating from the very first page. Hygge – Charlotte Abrahams The Danish concept of hygge has taken the UK by storm. From candlelight and snuggly Page 52
blankets, to dinner with friends, hygge is about wellbeing, cosiness and appreciating the little things. Charlotte Abrahams talks us through how she’s embraced a more ‘hyggelig’ way of life and what it’s meant for her. There are no hard rules, no demands to cut back on this or stop doing that, just a focus on being kinder to ourselves, celebrating the ordinary and enjoying a simpler life. The Girl Before – JP Delaney At first glance One Folgate Street seems like a renter’s dream. Emma certainly thinks so, as does Jane, several months later. But the minimalist house comes with some very strict rules, and as Jane learns of Emma’s death, she starts to wonder whether there’s a darker side to the landlord’s stipulations. A tense psychological thriller, The Girl Before looks set to become one of 2017’s most talked about books. The Phantom Tree – Nicola Cornick Alison is stuck in modern day Britain, hundreds of years after she was born. Mary is back in Tudor England. But only Mary can reveal what happened to Alison’s son all those years
ago. As Alison tries to follow the clues Mary left behind, she uncovers more than she was expecting. Historical fiction with a twist, this is a must for fans of Kate Morton and Barbara Erskine. The Lauras – Sara Taylor When Ma bundles 13 year old Alex out of bed and into the car one night, neither knows just how long their road trip is going to last. Ma takes Alex across America, revisiting the places that shaped her as she was growing up, from foster homes to semi-derelict squats. As their journey progresses, she tells Alex about the ‘Lauras’ – the girls and women who played key roles in her early life. Enthralling. Three Daughters of Eve - Elif Shafak Peri spent her childhood negotiating the distance between her parents. Now she acts the part of a dutiful, Turkish housewife. But when a half-forgotten photograph reminds her of long ago freedoms, Peri struggles to keep up the charade. She can’t help but look back to her days as a student in Oxford, the choices she made, the friends she left behind and the scandal that tore everything apart.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week - 27th February to 5th March
Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them. Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity. WhaT Causes eaTing DisorDers? Often, it’s a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors. Risk factors are: • Bereavement or abuse. • Being criticised about weight, body shape or eating habits. • Intense stress. • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Pressure to be slim from themselves, society or a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports. • Underlying issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or obsessive personality. • Relationship issues. Types oF eaTing DisorDer anorexia nervosa Around 1 in 250 women and 1
Page 56
in 2,000 men will experience anorexia, becoming preoccupied with weighing as little as possible via excessive exercise and/or starving themselves. It usually develops at age 16 or 17 but sometimes, as young as 7. Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and purging by inducing vomiting or using laxatives, and 90% are female. It’s more common than anorexia and usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BeD) BED affects around 5% of adults, compelling them to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally, usually developing between 30 and 40 years old. eating Disorder not otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people may have some but not all of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder, so they receive an EDNOS diagnosis. Diagnosis anD TreaTmenT Doctors and healthcare professionals use internationally agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Often, people with eating disorders will be in denial or try to hide symptoms, but they may: • Skip meals or claim they’ve already eaten/will eat when they’re out. • Only eat tiny/low-calorie meals. • Claim they’re fat when they’re
a healthy weight/underweight. • Repeatedly weigh themselves/ study themselves in the mirror. • Cook large family meals yet eat little themselves. • Refuse to eat in public or become stressed when they do. • Use ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else has an eating disorder, get professional help immediately. Rapid treatment makes full recovery more likely and minimises the impact on the patient’s body and life. However, recovery can be lengthy and, like the disorders themselves, complex. Physical health is monitored while the disorder’s underlying causes are treated. This may involve: • Self-help books. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change thinking and in turn, behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy focusing on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how personality and life experiences influence thoughts and behaviour. • Family therapy, considering the eating disorder’s effects on them and their family. • Medication: often SSRI antidepressants (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). support and more information: Beat (Beat eating Disorders) www.b-eat.co.uk/ For over-18s/those concerned about a child: 0345 634 1414 help@b-eat.co.uk For under-18s: Youth Helpline 0345 634 7650 fyp@b-eat.co.uk

1st Newent Cub Scouts light up the century Cubs from 1st Newent recently joined millions of other Cubs to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting, at parties held all over the world. 1st Newent's Cubs opted to join together with nationwide celebrations with a chocolate-themed party, complete with chocolate marbles, a chocolate fountain, a chocolate flour game involving picking chocolate out of flour with only the teeth and a dress up game in which they had to put on hats, scarfs and gloves to eat chocolate with a knife and fork. There's not usually so much chocolate consumed in a group night, but we felt that this was such a special occasion that the odd tummy ache would be worth it! Between eating chocolate, Cubs hopped, jumped and skipped through the decades, looking back
through a century in which Cub Scouting has given so many youngsters so much fun, friendship and a taste for the outdoors for the rest of their lives. Recent research has shown that involvement in the Scout Association from an early age is an important factor in preventing mental health problems in adolescents and those up to the age of 25, so since their inception 100 years ago, our Cubs groups have been contributing to the well-being of our whole community. The Cubs also had an opportunity for quiet reflection and renewal of their Cub Promise, around the one hundred candles they had helped set up and light. Leading the recital of 1st Newent Cubs Pack's Promise, Assistant District Commissioner Chris Brewster reminded everyone that they were joined to the worldwide family of Cub Scouts, as many of their parents and grandparents had been before them. To top it all off there was a celebratory birthday cake (not chocolate!) and campfire singing of songs both new and traditional. Cub Scout Leader Peter Trigg
commented “The evening went with a real swing, and nearly a real pop, as we had planned to hold the party at our Scout Headquarters opposite the fire station, but when we arrived there was a smell of gas. In Scouting, thinking on our feet is second nature to us – and thanks to the prompt and kind help of Simon Mason, the Vicar of St Mary’s, Newent, we were able to switch location and hold the event at the church rooms, so as not to disappoint the youngsters.” 1st Newent’s Cubs meet on Monday evenings during term time at Scout Headquarters between 6.30 and 8.00pm. Cubs can join from the ages of 8-10 and a half years old, learn a variety of modern and traditional skills and take part in trips away. If you know anyone who may have some time to spare, the Cub Pack is always looking for people to help us, either on an occasional basis or more regularly. This term, the Pack will be undertaking DIY, building bird boxes and learning climbing, code breaking and Morse code.

Back Seat Birth to Front Seat Driver My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. Hopefully she will soon. But that’s for the future. I relate this to you because of what caught my eye recently: it’s a light-hearted story concerning another similar aged driver. 17 years ago, the parents of Freya
Whitelaw were rushing in their Vauxhall Astra to the maternity hospital. Except Freya wouldn’t wait and Mrs Whitelaw had to be delivered of her on the back seat of the car. Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says Freya) but, about to take her driving test, Mum and Dad have passed it on to their daughter as her first car. I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to continue a long and safe one in the front. By Iain Betson

Caramelised
Onion & Goats’ Cheese Pizza Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour
This is a tasty alternative to the classic cheese and tomato pizza. Serve with a simple mixed green salad dressed with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
Ingredients: • 3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle • 2 large onions, peeled and thinly sliced • 2 tsp brown sugar • 2 x 145g packets pizza base mix • 2 tsp fresh chopped rosemary leaves, plus 1 tbsp small sprigs • 2 x 100g round goats’ cheeses, sliced • 5 cherry tomatoes, halved
TIP
Instead of the caramelised onions spread, the pizza base with sun-dried tomato paste then top with some cooked and drained spinach. Scatter over diced mozzarella cheese, grated parmesan cheese and some fresh chopped oregano. Page 60
Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan and add the onions. Fry over a gentle heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add the sugar and fry for a further 10 minutes until golden brown. Leave to cool. Preheat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas Mark 7. Empty both sachets of the pizza base mix into a large bowl and stir in a large pinch of salt and the chopped rosemary leaves. Stir in 200ml hand-hot water and mix to a soft dough. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Roll the dough out to a 30 x 45cm oblong. Place on a greased baking sheet and turn up the edges of the base. Spread the caramelised onions over the base, then top with the sliced goats’ cheese, cherry tomatoes and rosemary sprigs. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a little salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the base is golden brown.

Hobbies A Resoundingly Successful Hobby By Kate McLelland Sunday mornings just wouldn’t be the same without them. Weddings would feel less joyous, funerals less solemn. If the church bells across the country were to fall silent, it would be the end of a tradition that has lasted for at least two thousand years. Bell-ringing is deeply embedded in our culture, so it hardly seems possible that one day local community groups might stop coming together to ring out those powerful messages of joy, sadness and celebration. Unfortunately that day could be closer than you might imagine. A survey recently carried out by BBC local radio shows that bell-ringers across the country are finding it harder and harder to recruit new volunteers. Almost 75% of the bell-ringers questioned said that over the past ten years they have found it harder to find new recruits, particularly young people under the age of 21. There have even been calls to reclassify bell-ringing as a sport in order to gain access to funding, raise its profile and make it appear ‘cooler’ to a younger generation. Ironically this comes at a time Page 68
when bell-ringing is more in demand than ever. Over sixty per cent of the BBC survey respondents said that requests for their services had increased over the past decade. tHe HIstory of cHurcH bells Early Christian missionaries used handbells to call people to prayer, and an Italian bishop was the first to introduce larger, hanging bells into his churches in Campania around the year 400 AD. This practice gradually spread throughout Europe until it reached Great Britain around 200 years later. By the year 750 AD, church bells were sufficiently common for the Archbishop of York to order his priests to toll bells at certain times of the day. For hundreds of years the practice of bell-ringing remained relatively simple, but in late medieval times ringers began to experiment with new techniques, attaching bells to quarter and half-wheel timber shapes that offered ringers greater control over the bell’s swing. Many bells and bell towers were lost during the
Reformation, when Henry VIII’s officers destroyed the nation’s rich abbey churches. After that time, churches began to rehang bells mounted on a whole wheel, refining the technology to a point where the bell could perform a 360º rotation and be stopped and started at will, making more complex ‘peals’ possible. How do I start? You don’t need to be super-fit, or have a lot of upper body strength, to be a bell-ringer. Ringing is the perfect way to enjoy gentle physical exercise and is suitable for people of all ages. The action of pulling on the rope not only gives your muscles a mild workout, it also improves agility, reaction time and co-ordination. There are 40,000 bell-ringers in the UK, many of them qualified to teach. You can find a group near you by going to www.bellringing.org and searching their database, or alternatively ask your local church if they run taster sessions. How does bell-rIngIng work? At the beginning of the session the bells are rung ‘up’: the

angle of swing is gradually increased until the bell is swinging full circle. When it reaches a 360º rotation it can then be stopped, mouth upwards, using a ‘stay’ and a ‘slider’ to control it. When the bell is in the upward position, it is said to be ‘set’. Each time the bell-ringer pulls the rope, the bell swings through another full circle rotation and sounds. In ‘change ringing’ the bellringers adjust the intervals at which they pull their ropes to control the speed of striking. This produces a musical pattern. How do I learn? Novice bell-ringers are usually taught in several stages: during the first session they will learn to handle the bell (this is usually done on a one-
to-one basis); in the second they will learn to ring with others. After this students learn about ‘change ringing’, where ringers are required to sound their bells in a particular order, building up from simple to more complex patterns of ringing. The tutorial period usually ends with a 45minute session during which students demonstrate that they have mastered the required techniques. tHe benefIts of bellrIngIng Dickon Love, who is Tower Captain at the quaintly named church of St James Garlickhythe in London, describes bell-ringing as “the best of form of heavy metal … a big loud noise. It keeps you fit, there’s a competitive element as well, and it’s a very
social thing to do - after each practice without fail you can find us down the local pub.” Many teams also organise monthly gatherings or plan outings to ring bells in different parts of the country, while some are even invited overseas to ring in churches as far away as Australia. If you enjoy competition, you may relish taking part in contests such as the National Twelvebell Striking Contest. So, if you’re up for some gentle exercise and brain-training, you enjoy socialising with other like-minded people and you want to protect an important part of Britain’s heritage, bellringing could be the hobby you’ve been looking for. Join up, and keep those bells sounding well into the future.
