Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Christmas and the January sales have come and gone and the cold start to the year has certainly kept us on our toes! As we head into February, we have Valentine’s Day to look forward to. Many see Valentine’s Day as a commercial gimmick and the first stumbling block for anyone who had a dietrelated New Year’s resolution! Whether you celebrate this day or not, I think it is a great way to remind ourselves to spread a bit of love to those around you. Also, the 14th falls within half term so it provides parents and grandparents with a great theme for doing some arts and crafts or baking with the children! At the start of the year, committees and fete organisers get together to put dates in the diary for future events. Please remember to let us know what you are planning and we might be able to publish your event in the magazine and share it on our social media pages for you. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers and thank you for supporting the local businesses within our magazines! See you back here in March. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Gorsley Community Shop and Post Office Progress With a big effort from the steering team, the key objectives to produce a viable business plan and to submit the application for the Post Office Local Grant before the end of 2017 were achieved. The project now progresses to the next stage to make it a reality - this will depend on how successful we are in obtaining the following: 1) Raising the necessary £22k for start-up costs (inc. stock), and a further £13k to support cash flow. 2) Signing up around 50 volunteers to regularly work in the shop for two or more hours at a time. 3) Recruit the right part-time manager. The intention is for the majority of funding and volunteers to come from the community and local organisations and groups. We would, therefore, like to hear from anyone willing to contribute in any way – please check our website www. gorsleycommunityshop.co.uk or email fundraising@ gorsleycommunityshop.co.uk or volunteering@ gorsleycommunityshop.co.uk for more information.

New Start Cat Rescue needs more volunteers We are always on the look out for fosterers! Do you have a spare room in your house where you could look after one or more of our cats or kittens? We will provide food and litter and any veterinary treatment needed (although you will have to be prepared to travel to one of our approved vet practices). At the moment we are overrun with cats and have a large number of semi-feral kittens that need to be shown that humans can help them, and to learn to trust us. Could you help with this? It's a fab way to help the charity and to get a part time cat or kitten to look after. Please get in touch if you think you could help. We also really need people to come and help clean out the cats' pens at Huntley in the morning from about 9.30am - 12noon. One morning a week would be fantastic! Meet new people and volunteer for an excellent cause. Please get in touch if you can help us, we’d love to hear from you!

The Federation of Newent Schools Blowing our own trumpet! One thing that we are passionate about at Glebe and Picklenash is providing a broad and balanced curriculum to all of our children; ensuring that they get a range of experiences and that they have the opportunity to try new things. Music has always been a core subject across the Federation and the benefits are widely reported in research nationally. Music can inspire and aid children to achieve in all areas. As such we place a huge value on the importance of teaching music in our schools. Like most schools we have an afterschool choir and orchestra – both perform regularly at concerts and even entertained the town as part of the Christmas lights switch on this year. One very special aspect of this provision is our link with local old people’s homes; our visits are a great way of showcasing the choir's talents and bringing smiles to others within the community. Many of the parents would have been wowed by the recent Christmas performances of Charles Dickens' ‘Scrooge’ by our Y4/5 children and ‘Where on Earth is Santa?’ by our infant children. Both productions were full of song and dance and allowed children to enjoy an amazing confidence-building experience.
Music is taught weekly at both schools and with a dedicated and wellresourced music room, we are able to provide unrivalled music tuition in our Junior department. Our highly experienced music teacher is able to engage pupils of all abilities; through sharing a range of musical genres, from Queen and the Beatles to modern-day pop, giving children a love of music. We have a range of small group and one-to-one peripatetic options for parents to choose from that further develop individual skills: singing, drums, keyboard, violin, guitar and flute are just a few of the options that are available. This year we are going even further! We have just launched into a project with a company called ‘Rocksteady’ who provide peripatetic lessons for small groups of children who learn all the skills needed to form their own rock bands. Children as young as four will be looking to learn electric guitar, drums, keyboard and vocals and perform at the end of the term in their very own band! Furthermore, we have introduced
Comedy Evening at St Mary’s Church Newent (Sat 3rd Feb @ 7.30pm) In a first for St Mary’s in Newent, the church is hosting a live comedy evening featuring John Archer. John is a British comedy magician who has spent the last 28 years entertaining audiences all over the world, including regular visits to British troops serving overseas. He is thought to be one of the best contemporary comedy magicians in the UK. John regularly supports Tim Vine on tour and, branching out a little, recently took part in the BBC comedy programme “Tim Vine Travels Through Time Christmas Special”, which he co-created and co-wrote with Tim. On stage, John will take his audience on a rollercoaster ride of idiotic visual Page 10
gags and baffling trickery. Such is his talent that he is the first magician to have fooled the legendary John Archer American magicians ’'Penn and Teller” with his unique magic envelope routine. Some of his accolades include the award of the British Magical Champion of Comedy, being promoted to become a member of the prestigious "Inner Magic Circle" and being a past winner of the “Magic Circle Stage Magician of the Year.” The event organiser, Dan Browne,
whole class instrument tuition – this free-to-all opportunity will see all of our Junior children have the chance to play the trumpet and learn to read music. Having loaned 30 instruments each child can play together with their classmates. They receive specialist tuition and all abilities are able to have the chance to potentially try something completely new! The initial reactions to these sessions are outstanding and the children love them! If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Glebe Infant School & Picklenash Junior School. Please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - Tony Larner, Executive Head Teacher said: “I have organised this event to show that St Mary’s Church is a church committed to serving the local community and to providing events and activities for that community. I felt that people from all walks of life would be interested and we hope to be doing more in the future." It is quite a coup for Newent to be able to see John perform live at St Mary’s on Saturday 3rd February 2018 at 7.30pm. Apart from it being the first of many, it promises to be a great night out. To book tickets please go to www.eventbrite.co.uk and search for stmaryscomedynight. Cake & Bake Perfect Pancakes Whip up a classic pancake batter to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. Simply serve the traditional way with sugar and lemon juice or try one of our extra special sweet or savoury serving ideas. Makes 8 - Ready in 30 minutes plus standing time Ingredients: • 100g plain flour • Pinch of salt • 1 large egg
• 300ml milk (or milk and water mixed) • Sunflower oil or unsalted butter, for frying 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the salt and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and beat with a balloon whisk, gradually drawing in some of the flour. 2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time and drawing in the rest of the flour, until you have a smooth batter which is about the consistency of single cream. 3. Stand the batter for about 30 minutes to allow the starch grains in the flour to soften and expand –this will give a lighter pancake. If the batter has thickened slightly then just whisk in a splash of milk. 4. Heat a little sunflower oil or a knob of butter in a non-stick shallow frying pan (about 20cm diameter)until almost smoking then quickly ladle in enough of the batter to thinly cover the base of the pan, swirling the pan to give an even layer. 5. Cook for 1-2 minutes until small air bubbles appear in the pancake then flip it over and cook for a further minute until golden. Repeat with the rest of the mixture, serving the pancakes as they are cooked or interleaving with baking paper and keeping warm in a low oven. Page 12
SWEET Choc ‘n’ nuts – spread warmed pancakes with chocolate and hazelnut spread then fold into quarters. Drizzle with warmed chocolate sauce and serve with toasted hazelnuts. Orange cream – heat 4tbsp thin-shred marmalade with 150ml orange juice in a frying pan and simmer for a few minutes until syrupy. Fold the pancakes and add to the pan, turning to coat in the syrup. Serve topped with whipped cream or crème fraiche. SAVOURY Cheese and bacon melts – add 2tsp dried Italian herbs to the pancake batter. Fill each cooked pancake with some grated Cheddar and 2 rashers crisply fried smoked bacon rashers. Fold over and pop in a hot oven for 10 minutes until the cheese has melted. Tuna parcels – place a spoonful of canned flaked tuna fish in the centre of each cooked pancake and top with some canned sweetcorn and chopped spring onion. Fold the pancakes to make parcels and enclose the filling. Serve with sweet chilli sauce.

Busy term ahead at Pauntley C of E
We have had a great start to the new year with our new topics of “Toys and Games” for May Hill Class and “Invaders and Settlers” for Malvern Class. Malvern Class are already working on a Viking longship – have a look at the photo! We are also really pleased that “Roaring Rugby” is coming back to deliver extra sports lessons and an after-school Tag Rugby Club. Roaring Rugby fosters Christian values and distinctiveness through sport and is enjoyed by children throughout the school. We would like to thank our Friends, who did a huge amount of work before Christmas organising a very successful Christmas Bazaar which was held at the start of December. Many thanks to all the parents and friends who turned up to help and to all the children for making lovely things to sell. One of our parents recently approached Midcounties Co-op about a regional community grant and we are pleased to say that our application has been approved. The Friends have now received £200 to purchase equipment for the school garden and playground. This will be put to good use by the school. There are all sorts of interesting things coming up in the next couple of months, with trips and activities connected to the aforementioned topics as well as a film night and a quiz night organised by the Friends. We look forward to a very busy and productive term! Pauntley C of E Primary School has spaces available in selected years and there will be a warm welcome for everyone who would like to come along and have a look round; please call the school office for more information. 'THANK YOU' FROM SANTA Santa was delighted to meet lots of local children in December. Despite the adverse weather conditions, he did eventually manage to visit most of the streets in Newent and Highnam, together with his friends from Newent Rotary. So thank you to all the lovely children who came out to greet Santa on his sleigh, and to those who so generously supported our charity fundraising effort.
We managed to raise a staggering amount of £1,750 (a new record!) so thank you! Every penny will go to deserving charities for young and old.

Cancer Research. This is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, with over 40,000 men being diagnosed every year in the UK. Unfortunately, men over 50 have a 1 in 8 chance of developing prostate cancer, which is caused by random genetic changes. It seems as men get older, they are more likely to develop the disease. Please help us to assist Prostate Cancer Research in their efforts to increase survival rates by furthering research, and to achieve their goal ‘towards a future without prostate cancer’ – thank you. Time to Get Pruning by Pippa Greenwood
At this time of year the weather is often perfect for pruning and cutting back woody plants, so take advantage of the fact that deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges and climbers are now devoid of leaves and get stuck in. Here’s how to make sure your pruning will really benefit your plants: • For a small hedge or to roughly reshape a shrub, a good, sharp pair of well-oiled shears should do the job. Angle the blades to make a level trimmed surface. To make a neat and level surface when cutting the top of a hedge, use a taut string as a guide line. For large hedges consider using a powered hedge cutter or hedge trimmer, but make sure you can use it safely! • When removing stems at various heights and of varying thicknesses, use ‘loppers’, which are much better at cutting through relatively thick stems than shears or secateurs and yet also allow for accurate positioning of the cut. When cutting back branches above your head, wear protective headgear and goggles. • Secateurs are used for the most precise pruning of smaller woody stems. Page 18
Provided they are good and sharp, you can make a perfectly clean and accurate cut. Always cut to an outwardfacing bud (so that the new growth produced from that bud grows outwards). Secateurs are good for removing dead and dying stems as well as for formative pruning (where you are helping to ensure the plant grows in the direction you want it to), and for pruning to encourage flowering. • To remove larger tree branches or if you have fruit trees to prune, then a pruning saw is the perfect tool. Use a sawing action for best results and make the cut a few millimetres from the main stem to which the branch you are removing is joined. A cut like this will heal quickly and the wound will be smaller and less prone to fungal rotting. • Check the best pruning time for the plants you have in mind. Although most hedges and many shrubs can be cut back now, there are exceptions. • Some trees - mainly those in the Prunus family such as cherries, plums, apricots, damsons, peaches and nectarines - are very prone to a potentially fatal fungal
infection known as ‘silver leaf’. To reduce the likelihood of this, prune these trees in the summer unless there is no alternative. • Pruning tools should be really sharp; if blunt, the job will need more effort and may result in damage to the plant from a jagged cut or crushed stems. • Create sloping cuts whenever you can so that rain and moisture runs off (wetness encourages wood rotting), and cut close to but not on top of a bud to allow new growth without dieback - you will need to use secateurs, loppers or a saw to do this. • Stand back from time to time when pruning to check the overall appearance of the plant and judge which part to tackle next, as close up it is harder to see how your pruning is affecting the overall shape of the plant. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school serving Newent, surrounding villages and, because of good transport links, Gloucester City, the Forest of Dean and Herefordshire. The School operates dedicated bus services for students living in the Gloucester City and Forest of Dean areas. We are a high-achieving school at the very heart of our community. We have a strong tradition of academic success within a positive and caring learning environment based on mutual trust and respect. We have a vibrant and highly successful Sixth Form offering a wide range of courses on which students make excellent progress. We achieved a 98% pass rate A-Level in 2017. It is particularly encouraging that we have seen an increase of 5% points in our A*-C pass rate. Sixth Form students will shortly be able to benefit from our exciting new Sixth Form building which is currently under construction. All staff are firmly committed to ensuring that every
Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre CPR with the British Heart Foundation Students at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre are learning to be life-savers thanks to a new initiative by the school in cooperation with the British Heart Foundation. Following a successful bid for equipment and support from the charity, all Year 7 and 8 students will be trained in CPR, taught how to put someone into the 'recovery position' and shown how to use a defibrillator. On Tuesday 16th of January, 290 11- to 13-year-olds gathered at the Watery Lane School to be taught and enthusiastically practise the vital first aid skills which could enable them to save the life of a member of their community. Principal Alan Johnson said: "We believe we are unique in educating all of our students from ages 11 to 18 with these life-saving skills. In addition to acquiring the academic qualifications to secure their best future, we are determined our students should learn life skills enabling them to truly contribute to their community. This new training means all our students, whatever their age, could now save the life of someone experiencing a cardiac arrest." Students in Year 9 and above already get CPR training during the school's First Aid Awareness sessions (part of the Personal Social Health in Education programme). Page 20
student achieves their full potential. We strive to develop confident, well informed and caring young adults who have self-belief and fully participate in their local, national and international communities. Newent Community School is recognised by Ofsted as a ‘good’ school, achieving above average results and with relationships between staff and students described as ‘excellent’. For further information on Newent School call 01531 820550, email admin@newent.gloucs.sch.uk or visit www.newent.gloucs.sch.uk.
All new students entering the school every year will continue to receive this training from now on. School Medical and Student Welfare Officer Lisa Jevons, who led the session together with Sarah Standing from the BHF, said: "We passionately believe that every student at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre should be instilled with the confidence and capability to take effective action if they witness a cardiac arrest. Every year 30,000 people in the UK have a sudden cardiac arrest and only one in 10 survive when this occurs outside a hospital setting. All our students, even the very youngest, now have the ability to be a life-saver." Thanks to a successful bid to the British Heart Foundation, the school has been provided with training equipment worth more than £1,000, enabling 35 pupils at a time to be trained. Callum Bace, 12, said: “It was interesting and fun. If anyone in my family was ever in need, I’d now know how to check if they were conscious and breathing.” Josh Ellis, 12, added: “I think it’s a really good idea. If I was anywhere in public and someone had a cardiac arrest, I’d know what to do and be able to do it properly. It could be useful in future life.” Newent Community School is recognised by the Government as a Healthy School, having achieved the Healthy Living and Learning Award. The school recently became the first in the county to achieve the Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning Mental Health Champions Award. We went a-wassailing Under a perfect star-filled sky and despite the bitterly cold temperatures, the annual Wassail event held last month at Much Marcle was well supported attracting huge crowds. The sight of hundreds of people carrying lit torches processing the short distance to the Orchard to "wake up the apple trees" and encourage the new year's harvest was simply spectacular. The ancient tradition of “Wassailing” is held to bring good harvest and fortune associated with apple orchards dating back several hundred years and the word has its origins in the Old English toast “waes hael” meaning Good Health. The custom is particularly common in cider-producing areas and involves Morrismen dancing, cider offerings beating the branches and lots of noise including firing shotguns, shouting and singing into the trees to wake them up. The Silurian leader explained that Twelfth Night refers to the night before Epiphany, the day when the nativity story tells us that the wise men visited the infant Jesus. During the dancing and festivities, he encouraged the spectators, young and old, to "Wassail" as loudly as possible and everyone was happy to oblige! The charity ‘bucket collection’ was for St Michael's Hospice who do an absolutely amazing job delivering compassionate care. Thanks were given to all those who contributed and participated, especially the businesses concerned (Westons Cider, the Slip Tavern and others) and, of course, the wonderful traditional Silurian Morrismen Dancers. Home & Interiors Fabulous Fireplaces
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s time to put another log on the fire, get cosy and snuggle up until winter is over. Our ideas will help ensure your fireplace looks as good as it makes you feel.
Improve your fIresIde décor
• The fireplace wall is often the focal point of the room, and can look amazing when treated as a feature wall, using either striking wallpaper or a paint colour that contrasts with, yet also complements, the colours used in the rest of the room. • Fireplace accessories can be quite distinctive and are usually on display, so choose pieces, whether contemporary or traditional, that co-ordinate both with your room as a whole and with each other. • Above the fireplace, add either a work of art or a mirror that is proportionate to the space. A mirror is very useful for reflecting light around the room, but don’t feel it has to be a traditional overmantel – something more contemporary may fit better with your style. • Think about what is displayed on your mantelpiece. Photographs, candles, small ornaments and vases of flowers, collections… anything goes provided it fits. A formal, symmetrical arrangement is easy to achieve and suits a traditional room, or else something more freeform can be eye-catching and intriguing. • Not using your fireplace? It can still be a great feature. Stack logs within it, prop up a framed picture, display a large ornament such as a shell, a piece of coral or antlers, set up a group of candles, or simply use the space for a display of flowers in a simple vase.

Perfect for kindling or newspapers, this hand-made leather bucket is made in a family co-operative in Rajasthan using natural dyes. It costs £89.95 from Decorator’s Notebook. Every ‘real’ fire needs a tool set. In wrought iron with an antiqued finish, this trio of poker, fork and grabbers will help you get the flames going on a chilly evening. Fireside tool set, £44.50, Garden Trading. If a rustic log basket isn’t your look, consider a minimal metal holder instead. Lodge round log carrier in steel, £57, Garden Trading.
Sturdy yet easily portable, this Scandinavian-designed fire screen is both smart and practical. Garden Trading Jutland fire screen in steel, £75, Black By Design. A reindeer hide is just the thing for throwing down in front of the fire. I had this dream… This heart-warming little story is accompanied by fun, colourful illustrations which are bound to catch any child’s (or adult’s!) eye. Kenneth supplied the story and an illustrator brought his words to life.
Kenneth Radford, a retired maths teacher in his mid-sixties, who lives in the Forest of Dean, recently decided to set himself a challenge and to try his luck as a children’s book author. Kenneth has been a teacher all his working life, both in the UK and in Hong Kong, and has a wife, two daughters and four grandchildren who he loves to spend time with. Thanks to his career in teaching and his role as a father and grandfather, it is safe to say that Kenneth knows how to talk to children and catch their imagination. It was with his grandchildren in mind that one day, when he accompanied one of them to the dentist, he came up with the story of “Dulk*”, a grandfatherlike character who lives together with his cat Sulk. Dulk is a passionate gardener who, through the power of dreams, finds a way to communicate with the plants in his garden. His venture into the land of dreams teaches Dulk a valid life lesson which has a big impact not only on his own life but also on those of the vegetables he grows.
After some initial difficulties in publishing the story, Kenneth decided not to admit defeat and eventually found the perfect publisher in AuthorHouse UK. They work closely with the American book market, a prospect which Kenneth is very excited about as it will see his book travel to book fairs around the globe. The book subtly touches on more profound topics such as the power of dreams, the importance of having a positive attitude, the power of smiling (something Kenneth picked up on when he lived in Hong Kong) as well as the importance of growing food. The best part? The story doesn’t stop there! Kenneth is already working on parts two and three, drawing inspiration (amongst others) from his passion for maths. Watch this space! Kenneth had never planned on being an author but once he conceived the idea of Dulk, he began wondering – ‘what if?’ and ‘why not?’ which eventually led to “Dulk – I Had This Dream” being published in November 2017. Kenneth is battling with cancer but has managed to maintain his positive attitude and outlook on life which is always accompanied by an infectious smile. He is determined to live life to the fullest, try out new things and take on new projects. In doing so, Kenneth

hopes to encourage and inspire other people, who may be in a similar situation to him, to do the same. If you would like to obtain a copy of the book, then please get in touch with Kenneth on 07580 050749. Copies are also available online at www.authorhouse.co.uk and on Amazon Books.
Help Kenneth get the word out about his book Kenneth would be happy to supply local libraries and schools with a copy of his book. If this is of interest to you, please get in touch with him on 07580 050749. Kenneth is also available for interviews so if you wish to meet Dulk’s creator and find more about the book and the man behind it, then please give him a call to arrange a meeting. - Written by Anne Golldack *Why “Dulk” you may wonder – according to Kenneth he just really liked the sound and uniqueness of the name. It is certainly one that people won’t easily forget.

Christmas in Newent 2017 Christmas celebrations in Newent started last year in November with the increasingly popular annual Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary’s Church.
This time there were more entries than ever before, taking the total to over 60 which is incredible for a town the size of Newent! Simon, who organised the festival with his colleagues, commented: “I was so pleased to see so many people taking time out to take part and make it such a successful festival. The number of entries seems to increase year on year. The trees were beautiful and amazingly decorated and looked simply spectacular in the setting of the church. The number of visitors was also up, showing just how popular the festival has become." Some of the more innovative trees included the ‘Hockey Sticks Tree' from Newent Hockey Club and one from the newest company to come to Newent – MKM Building Products.
people to become the Three Kings and ride camels in the procession, and a second for a chance to win a very large chocolate Santa, which can be seen in the picture (modelled by our Town Mayor, June Davies). Following closely on from the Christmas Tree Festival, this year’s Lights Festival excelled itself. The Three Kings rode camels, together with Mary and Joseph on a donkey, in a procession through town before the lights were turned on.
Santa meeting the crowd at the Memorial Hall
Camels in the procession
Many of the local businesses contributed to the festive spirit in the lead-up to Christmas by creating, for example, some amazing shop window displays. Most impressive was the '12 days of Christmas' display, featuring knitted figures in the Dean Hospice Charity Shop. Local business 'Sweet Memories' ran two festive raffles: one to find three
Santa joined in on his sleigh at the end of the procession, meeting with and delighting the crowds of children and later saw many of them in his grotto at the Memorial Hall. Also in the Hall was a Victorian Market, decorated spectacularly with balloons from Sweet Memories.
Rev Simon Mason with Joseph, Mary and the donkey
The camels and Kings added a pleasing dimension to the whole of the celebrations and were met with universal approval. After the procession, the camels remained with some reindeer for the children to see and pet, also proving very popular.
As a tribute to all the work she has done this year, the lights were turned on by Kerri Greenwold, our MC and stalwart of the Town Council’s Lights Committee, who bring these celebrations to us every year.
During the day, the crowds were entertained under the Market House by a children's disco and by music from ‘Wake the World’, Newspaper Taxis, Bill Anderton’s ‘Newent Classical Brass’ and Newent Community Choir. The celebrations were concluded with a ‘Meet’ on Boxing Day from the local hunt Cotswold Vale Farmers at The George Hotel which was also well attended. - Written by Colin Thomas

Newent Town Council’s Newsletter Consultation - Town Council Office Accommodation Two public consultation events on 24th and 25th November were held regarding our office accommodation. The consultation was advertised in the press, posters were displayed and a questionnaire was available at the events and online. The Council wishes to sell Cemetery Lodge which was the location of the office for some years and to use the proceeds together with a Public Works Loan to purchase permanent office premises in the town centre. The Lodge is in a state of disrepair and the council office was moved to temporary accommodation in the Community Centre some time ago. A suitable building has become available in Court Lane and councillors are unanimous in wishing to have a place which is accessible for all and will enable the people of Newent to engage more easily with the Town Council. There were 91 responses to the questionnaire and the Council welcomes the endorsement of the overwhelming majority who were in favour of the move.
Snow and Ice Newent was seriously affected by wintry weather conditions in December and many residents contacted the Town Council for information and help. It is the statutory responsibility of the Highways Department of the

County Council to clear major roads and most of the A and B roads were suitably gritted. However, pavements here do not get treated within this programme as resources do not allow for sufficient vehicles and staff. Your Town Councillors discussed the problem of the pavements and minor roads at some length in response to many concerns expressed. Some pavement treatment was undertaken in the town centre but the council does not have the resources to deal with extensive gritting and clearing. Regrettably, on the basis of past experience, it was felt that the suggestion of installing more salt bins would result in misuse. However, the Council noted that one group of residents worked together to clear Bury Bar and would like to thank all similarly public-spirited people who cleared their own frontage and helped others. We would like to encourage residents and businesses who are able, to prepare for icy conditions and to clear their own frontage and also to look out for their neighbours who are less able to take suitable action or who may need essential supplies. If accidents do happen, the person clearing the pavement would not be liable as long as it was done carefully. Government advice is available at www.gov.uk/ clear-snow-road-path-cycleway.
Planning Consents Several councillors have recently attended training on planning
matters. One important lesson brought back was the value of developers sharing their ideas with the Town Council well before they make an official planning application. It can save developers considerable time and money if plans are generally aligned from the outset with the interests of the community, which Town Councillors are elected to represent.

Hidden Gems We usually focus on new releases for our book reviews, but this time we’ve scoured the back catalogues for a few gems you might have missed. Station Eleven – Emily St. John Mandel From Kirsten – child actor turned travelling thespian – to aspiring doctor Jeevan, the novel tells the individual stories of several people before, during and after a pandemic that wipes out most of the population. Gripping, beautiful and all too plausible, Station Eleven is a must for fans of Margaret Atwood, Erin Morgenstern and Suzanne Collins. Harry Potter series – JK Rowling, illustrated by Jim Kay There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of the boy wizard by now. If you’re a fan, you might want to consider upgrading your paperbacks for the hardbacks illustrated by Jim Kay. One is being released each year, starting with The Philosopher’s Stone in 2015, so the first three are currently available to buy. Kay’s illustrations are superb and incredibly detailed. Prefer e-readers? Check out the Kindle in Motion editions, which animate parts of the illustrations, so you can watch Harry fly through the air in hot pursuit of the golden snitch while you’re reading. Page 36
The Mysterious Affair at Cuckoo Song – Frances Hardinge Cuckoo Song was first published in 2014, the year before Frances Hardinge’s Costa Award-winning novel The Lie Tree. Eleven year old Triss wakes up from an accident to find things aren’t as they were. She can’t satisfy her immense hunger for a start; her sister is terrified of her; and even her dolls have turned against her. Is she going mad, or is the truth even more terrifying? A thoroughly enjoyable, fantastical read, Cuckoo Song is sure to prove a hit with fans of Neil Gaiman and Angela Carter. The Crow Road – Iain Banks The Crow Road covers some pretty big themes – love, death, religion, drugs and fractured families being just a few of them. Prentice McHoan returns home for his grandmother’s funeral and soon gets drawn into trying to solve the mystery of his Uncle Rory’s disappearance. It’s a dark, intense novel and far from an easy read, but the wit and sheer beauty of the writing could well make it one of your all-time favourites.
Why Mummy Drinks – Gill Sims Gill Sims is the author of a hugely successful Facebook blog – Peter and Jane’s Mummy. Why Mummy Drinks was released last autumn and quickly became a bestseller. Written in diary format, it tells the story of Ellen, a 39 year old mum of two, who’s trying to balance work and children, while navigating playground politics, irritating in-laws and an ex-boyfriend. The ensuing drama is extremely funny and very relatable if you’re a parent who isn’t quite ready to hang up her dancing shoes. Styles – Agatha Christie If last year’s hit film Murder on the Orient Express has tempted you to dip into the works of Agatha Christie, why not start with her very first novel? Published in 1920 and set during World War I, it introduces readers to the brilliant mind of Belgian refugee Hercule Poirot. The murder of a woman has everyone pointing the finger at one man. It’s down to Poirot to find out the real culprit before it’s too late. While The Mysterious Affair at Styles is not considered Christie’s finest work, there are still plenty of twists and turns to keep you hooked.

Auction Anecdote I am going to start this month’s anecdote by wishing you all a Happy NewYear and hoping that some of you have made some excellent NewYear’s Resolutions including trying to visit ‘that interesting little Auction Rooms in Newent’! Joking aside, I am hoping that we will continue to see an increase in private buyers over the course of this year since (as you probably know) I am passionate about trying to persuade people that auctions are a great place to purchase a huge range of items from jewellery to dinner services, from furniture, pictures and beautiful ornaments to useful essentials. I recently visited a house in Ross-on-Wye where the owner both wanted to raise some cash and dispose of a few surplus items around her home. After having a quick look through her jewellery which she was rather sad to part with I suddenly spied a very beautiful Royal Worcester pot pourri vase on a side table. ‘Of course, if you sold this’ I exclaimed then that would settle the whole dilemma as it would easily cover the figure required. The vendor was quite happy to dispose of the vase and I was more than delighted to be able to offer such a fine quality example in my salesroom. The large and glamorous looking pot pourri vase was painted peaches and grapes by the well-known Worcester artist John Freeman, who was one of the best and most senior of the Worcester fruit painters. After painting, the vase and cover would have been gilded in 22-carat gold by a skilled gilder and then burnished to give a final lustre to one of the most impressive and rich looking items of porcelain available on the market. The final plus point for me was that the whole piece was in fantastic condition without any chips, scratches or even general wear and tear. With the owner’s agreement, we gave it a sensible pre-sale estimate of £1,800/£2,500, thereby allowing potential bidders plenty of leeway and encouragement to ‘get them going’.A high reserve and estimate can often put potential buyers off as they like to feel they are bidding against other buyers up to a market price - rather than being forced to bid up to a high reserve set by the vendor. Also, once a buyer has become interested and started bidding they are more likely to continue on to try and complete the purchase. Royal Worcester fruit painted porcelain is always very sought after and an impressive example like this in good condition was bound to be very popular, especially just before Christmas. There were a number of online and telephone enquiries prior to the sale and two telephone lines were booked. On sale day, it finally sold to one of the telephone bidders for a very successful final price of £3,300 plus buyer’s premium of 20%. Smiths next sale is on the 2nd March and includes a full range of antiques and collectables as well as a special section for medals and militaria. Onion Ed's Blog Hi everyone,
least 100 paper hankies!
It’s Onion Ed again. A Happy New Year to one and all!
As you may be aware it takes a long time and a lot of effort from our volunteers to put the Onion Fayre together. My team are already starting to organise this year's Fayre and we are looking to make it even bigger and better so watch this space.
Thank you again for another very successful Onion Show in 2017. I have included a photo of me with the winners of the Onion Eating Contest to remind you of it. What an amazing Lights Festival we have had before Christmas! I loved all the street lights and actually got to meet Santa! Mind you, my favourite part was meeting the camels after the parade. I had a lovely Christmas and got a lovely set of onions from Santa. I hope you all got what you wished for too. I decided not to go into hibernation this winter (how many of you knew I used to do this) as I find it a very unfriendly thing to do. I have spent my time peeling onions for pickling instead and so far I have used at
I will be following the process with my monthly blog to show you how this is done so come September you can appreciate all the sterling work done by the volunteers who work so hard to put on the event every year. In looking at last year's Onion Show entrants, it seems that not enough local residents took part in the show and as this is a Newent Fayre we feel we must get more Newent folks involved going forward. So if you are interested in growing your own onions, especially to show at the Onion Fayre's 'Onion Show', then watch out for some tips from our
resident expert Chris Comer in the next issue of this magazine. We hope we will see many more entries at the show later on this year as a result. Bye for now,
Onion Ed
Newent Community School Skills Cube Newent Community School has taken on the government's requirement for schools to provide career guidance by introducing a progressive programme of career awareness. It starts with challenges in year 7 and, through years 8 and 9, helps students to think and learn about employability skills. The ‘Skills Cube’, aimed at year 7 students and created and organised

by Pippa Palmer and Sue Lawrence, was the first step in the programme. Students had to face four challenges, each designed to help them identify, think about and develop certain skills. Each session was guided by volunteer facilitators with each group providing an assessment at the end. The four challenges were: Sports Logic Challenge (designed to teach students about sequencing), Straw Eiffel Tower Challenge (requires communication skills and the ability to understand structure), Lego Challenge (requires reading skills, the ability to follow instructions and questioning skills) and Lift the Beachball Challenge (designed to help students understand weight; requires communication skills). All students took part in all four challenges and carried

How To Get A Good Night’s Sleep
• • • • A poor night’s sleep might seem like just an inconvenience. But research has shown that insufficient or poor-quality sleep can contribute to serious health problems, including: • Weight gain and obesity. • Weakened immunity. • Increased risk of diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. • Reduced fertility and libido. • Reduced memory, concentration and reaction times. • Increased risk of depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. This means it’s vital that we all get enough good quality sleep, which usually means at least seven hours. However, it’s not always easy. The enemies of sleep • Burning the candle at both ends, trying to fit in relaxation and domestic duties. • Sleep disorders: night terrors, sleep walking, sleep talking, sleep paralysis, teeth grinding, restless limb syndrome and sleep apnoea. • Needing the toilet. • Pain e.g. from arthritis. • An uncomfortable mattress or pillow. • Menstruation (pain, heavy bleeding and hormonal Page 42
changes that affect temperature and production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin). Snoring. Blue light. Smoking and alcohol. GORD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease) or LPR (laryngopharyngeal or ‘silent’ reflux, in which stomach acid can damage airways, causing asthma-like symptoms)
Ten Tips To help You sleep: 1. Stop snoring. Maintaining a healthy weight can help. Try sleeping on your side, nasal strips, sprays or mandibular adjustment devices. If these don’t work, consult your doctor, as you may be receiving a reduced oxygen supply at night. 2. Don’t go to bed hungry - but don’t eat late. Don’t eat less than two hours before bedtime. If you’re hungry in the evenings, choose something light and easily digestible. Milk can make you feel full and its tryptophan can help sleep, but it’s absorbed poorly (a carbohydrate-rich snack at the same time may help). 3. Stop smoking and eliminate evening alcohol and caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant and both nicotine and alcohol affect our sleep length and quality. All three can contribute to GORD and LPR. 4. Look after your body and its clock. Our bodies need exercise and daylight during the day and a more relaxed, dim environment in the evening to trigger our body
clock regulation hormones. 5. Avoid blue light two hours before bedtime. Blue light, produced by modern TVs, tablets, computers and mobiles, interferes with melatonin production. While blue light filters help, most just reduce, rather than eliminate, blue light. 6. Declutter your brain. Try writing down your worries and to-do lists before bedtime. It can be therapeutic in itself, and relieves the stress of trying to remember everything. 7. Have a night-time routine. Choose relaxing activities like reading in the hour or two before bedtime. Try having a warm (not hot) bath with relaxing aromatherapy oils. 8. Make your bedroom a haven. Avoid using your bedroom as a work space or dumping ground for clutter. Keep your bedroom well ventilated, not too hot or cold, and softly lit. Try blackout blinds - and earplugs if you have noisy housemates or neighbours. Invest in a comfortable, supportive mattress and pillows. 9. Don’t lie there worrying about not sleeping. Instead, get up and do something relaxing, such as reading a magazine or doing a jigsaw, until you feel sleepy. 10. Finally, see your doctor if you have problems with hormonal changes, night time urination, mental health, GORD, LPR or pain – or if these tips don’t work. Your GP can investigate possible causes and recommend helpful treatments and lifestyle changes.
