Auction Anecdote Once again Smiths Auction have been putting on the glitz (just in time for Christmas) with a selection of fabulous diamond rings including a 1.65 carat diamond solitaire which sold in their sale on the 4th December for £5,800.The same buyer from the South of England also bought another large diamond solitaire for £3,200 whilst a local buyer paid £1,800 for a large domed diamond cluster ring. However having now finished boasting yet again about our very successful jewellery sales I feel that I must continue to add a bit more variety in my ramblings and so have decided to cover a very different type of item for this month’s anecdote. The item in question was a rather tatty Danish 1960’s teak framed chair with leather cushions which was consigned with a small group of other more traditional furniture from a client from the Forest of Dean. The staff at Smiths spotted a small disc type label on the chair which was rather difficult to read, but after a bit of work on Google it was discovered to be a label for a Danish manufacturer France & Son. France & Son were a leading Danish manufacturer founded in 1948 by a British business man called Charles France. The company specialised in teak minimalist furniture and was at the forefront of modern design whilst also working to a very high standard and employing the best designers of that time. Charles France was a perfectionist who wanted the company to be the ‘Rolls Royce of furniture design’. His British headquarters were based in Bond Street, London. The chair at Smiths was designed by Grete Jalk – a radical feminist, architect and furniture designer of her day. She ran a very successful company of her own as well as being involved in publishing design magazines and was a member of the Danish Design Council. This type of retro designer furniture is selling very well at present and in the current market is much more in demand than many of the traditional antique furniture pieces which can be very difficult to find new homes for. Although the leather cushions of the chair were quite distressed and the teak frame had some surface wear and tear there was interest from a number of specialist dealers asking for further images and condition reports. Two telephone bids were booked - however in the end the chair sold to an online bidder from Harrogate for £360 against an estimate of £100/£150. Smiths next auction on the 29th January features a specialist section for coins, tokens and notes as well as a general selection of antiques, postcards and collectables. Entries are invited on the 5th, 7th & 12th January between 10am and 3pm, or by appointment. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or visit our website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk

Considering a new start for 2016? Christmas can often be a stressful time for families, even more so if you have concerns about your relationship with your spouse or partner. You may have been waiting for the New Year to arrive to take some action. This brief article contains some information which may help you to take the first step. If you find yourself facing a separation from your partner, whether you are married or not, then early legal advice can make all the difference to the outcome. Lucy Webley is a Family Law Solicitor with 20 years experience. She is a member of Resolution (the national association of family solicitors). Lucy will guide you through every step of the process and aim to secure settlements without the need for Court. In order to get divorced or to dissolve a civil partnership, the following must apply: • your marriage must be legally recognised in the UK; • you have been married for over a year; • and one of you must live in England or Wales. If you have sent a divorce/dissolution petition to the Court setting out your reasons, and your spouse/
partner does not object, then a decree nisi will be granted by the Court. This means that there is no reason why the divorce cannot go ahead. Following that a decree absolute is applied which legally ends the marriage. There is usually no need to attend Court. A financial settlement will need separate consideration, whether your assets are large or small. A divorce alone won’t resolve financial obligations. It is always in the best interests of both of you to consider and agree upon a sound financial settlement. This will give you both peace of mind for the future. If agreement is not possible, either by negotiation or formal mediation then we can ask the Court to assist as a last resort. If you were not married but lived together, different considerations will apply. In this case, it is particularly important to take legal advice if you have children together or own property. For disagreements involving arrangements for children, the Court always has to look at what is in the best interests of the child as its primary concern. In the majority of separations, arrangements can be negotiated successfully between the parties or by Mediation. If not then an application to the Court can be made. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Lucy Webley on 01531 632226 or email lcw@ormeandslade.co.uk

Make Room for Roses by Pippa Greenwood
It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. Although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or roseclad arbour? Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit. Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have Page 14
somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility. If the roots of bare root roses are lopsided and crammed together, spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately. Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place,
keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring. Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches include Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’. Make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood. com and your garden-ready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. It is great value and various pack sizes are available. Gift cards are available too.

New Year, New Home! January is the perfect time to consider selling your home and moving to somewhere new. To help sell your property quickly the following hints and tips will help you to achieve the best results.
1
Kerb Appeal First impressions count so make everything look its best, especially the lead up to your house! It’s important that your property appeals to as many people as possible - the more people you can get through the front door, the quicker you should find a buyer.
2
Freshen up your home A new coat of neutral paint, will work magic in a tired looking property. Replace broken light bulbs. Iron the bed sheets. Take down heavy dark curtains and blinds and add subtle lighting by installing up-lighters in the living room. Fresh flowers on the dining table or kitchen will bring an inviting feel to your home.
3
De-Personalise and De-Clutter A potential buyer will need to imagine living in your house before they make the all important decision to offer. So remove ornaments, photographs and children’s posters in the bedroom. Take away personal items that belong to you and put things you don’t use daily into storage. Clutter is a big no and it will be hard to impress any buyers with a cluttered house.

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith Social Media - not just for selfies! Facebook, Instagram, Twitter - social media isn’t just for tech-savvy teenagers, but can be useful in the business world too. It’s not just for sharing selfies and pictures of your dinner, but can help you connect with your customers in a way that wasn’t possible before. If you’re a creative business, Instagram is a network for sharing pictures and short videos. It’s ideal for photographers, graphic designers etc, but also businesses such as hairdressers, retailers and stylists. You don’t just need to post pictures of your products, but could share customer images or complementing trends, so followers can picture your items in real life, rather than in a shop. You sign up with a name (choosing one the same as your Twitter name is a good idea), select a picture to post and then have the option to add filters, captions, hashtags, and tag other accounts. Followers will see your picture in their feed and can like or comment on it. Twitter is a popular network for businesses - you pick a name (or “handle”) and share updates of up to 140 characters. People can then tweet you directly by including @YourName in their tweets. Tweets can include web links, pictures and hashtags - your followers can then reply, favourite, or re-tweet (republish) your tweets. Hashtags vary between currently trending topics, to recurring ones, such as #FODhour - an hour a week where Forest of Dean businesses use the hashtag to communicate with each other, promote themselves and reach clients. Facebook overtook MySpace a few years ago as the popular place to share photos, status updates and anything else you can think of. Businesses can set up a page, where you can share anything from behind the scenes pictures, to special offers and exclusive discounts for likers of your page. As well as enabling a two-way dialogue with your customers, it lets them interact with you in a more informal manner, and leave comments or questions outside office hours, when they can’t call you. As well as these three networks, you might consider Google+ (a little like Facebook), Pinterest (an online pinboard), Periscope (a live video streaming app), YouTube (videos - ideal for video blogs and demonstrations), Vine (short, looping videos) and LinkedIn (which deserves a whole post on its own, as a business networking site). This might sound like a lot of work - but there are apps that can streamline your social media, let you post to multiple sites from one app, and collect all your responses and notifications in one place. If you want to chat about social media and how it can help your business, or anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk, or search for us on Facebook or Twitter!

Time for a New Tradition By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk For many of us, New Year traditions may have dwindled to a rather slurred singing of Auld Lang Syne as the chimes of Big Ben fade. But in times gone by, New Year traditions were strongly upheld - and still are in many places. Why not adopt or renew one of them this New Year? Lucky New year NibbLes It’s a tradition in Spain to eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock, making a wish as you eat each one. The grapes are meant to bring twelve months of happiness, and the tradition is found in Central and South America too, although in some places the tradition is to try to fit as many of the twelve grapes into the mouth as is possible. In the southern US, Hoppin’ John, a traditional dish of black-eyed peas and ham hocks, is meant to ensure a year of plenty, while Italians eat one spoonful of lentil stew with each toll of the bell at midnight, as the round lentils represent coins and good fortune. In Germany it’s tiny Page 30
marzipan pigs that bring luck. In Greece, the hostess places jewellery on a plate on the table to symbolise prosperity in the coming year, and their Vassilopitta (King’s Pie), a cake flavoured with almonds, is cooked with a silver or gold coin inside, which brings blessings to the finder. The Portugese also have a King Cake, or Bolo-Rei, which resembles a crown and conceals a fava bean meant to bring luck, although this is debatable, as the finder has to pay for the Bolo-Rei the next year (a toy or prize was also included but has been removed for safety reasons). In Estonia, seven, nine and twelve are lucky numbers, and some people believe that eating seven, nine, or twelve times on New Year’s Eve will give them the strength of as many men as meals they have consumed. Follow this one if you like, but it may fast track you on to a diet. Get DresseD up aND Make soMe Noise In the Philippines, people wear clothes with spots to represent coins and good luck. In Brazil, people
celebrating at the beach usually wear white to bring good fortune, while in Spain and Italy, red underwear is believed to achieve the same thing. In South America, they opt for coloured underwear too: red for finding love, gold for gaining wealth and white for peace. Mexicans also decorate their homes colourfully. Red signifies finding love for them too, but yellow signifies improved employment, green brings improved finances and white promises better health. Perhaps a request for new underwear for Christmas could be doubly beneficial if you specify the colour? Music has always been a feature of New Year celebrations worldwide, but a few rounds of Guitar Hero might suit your budget better – and although Auld Lang Syne, a traditional song transcribed by Robert Burns and made famous by bandleader Guy Lombardo, is easily the most popular New Year song in Englishspeaking communities, perhaps you could write a new one. Many countries have a host of traditional New

While we’re not suggesting you fire guns at midnight, as many people once did, you could beat drums as they do in Switzerland, blow party horns or bang saucepans Filipino-style, or arm yourself with a gong, following the Buddhist Temple tradition of striking it 108 times at midnight to expel the 108 human weaknesses. out with the oLD aND iN with the New The tradition of first-footing has dwindled but still clings on in some parts of the UK, particularly in Scotland, and variations exist abroad too. household’s luck for the year. Tall, dark visitors are meant to be especially lucky, as are new mothers, new brides or those born on New Year’s Day. As visitors come bearing traditional gifts - coal for the fire, shortbread, salt, coins and maybe a tot of whisky – it’s worth a revival. At one time, Italians would discard old or unused items by dropping them from a window, but don’t try this at home. In Denmark they break old plates at the door of family and friends, but cleaning your house as the Japanese do may be safer. In Costa Rica and Venezuela, people run around their house or across the street dragging luggage, hoping for new adventures and good luck when travelling in the upcoming year. You may find leaving an appropriately marked travel brochure under your partner’s nose more effective, though. Lamb & Spinach Curry Ready in 55 minutes
Serves 4
This mildly spiced curry thickened with red lentils and spinach will make a refreshing change for a family meal after all the traditional food over the festive season. Serve with a cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt and some warmed naan bread for a really filling mid-week supper.
Ingredients: • 2 tbsp oil • 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 6 tbsp balti curry paste • 75g red split lentils • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 200g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander • Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve
TIP For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor!
Page 34
Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.
A Vintage Year “A person going nowhere normally gets there” is a well-known and irritating saying but sadly true. January is the month when many of us think about the year ahead and what we hopefully will do in the year. These thoughts are usually driven by what will make us and our loved ones happy. So we often start with New Year’s resolutions of losing some weight, getting a little fitter or giving up some bad habit. Unfortunately these well intentioned resolutions (not really goals) gradually get superseded by the pressures of life, a lack of determination or realisation of the sheer joy and pleasure resulting from their achievement. Just such a small price of effort can and will reap years of fulfilment and joy. January is also the month for thoughts about real achievement goal setting. Apparently this is the month when most people chose their holidays and talk and think about other things they want to do, own, or achieve in the year ahead.
Let me remind you of one of the essential ingredients for happiness that is to have something to look forward to. So what do you want to do this year? Your most wonderful asset, your brain, needs help to give it direction and purpose, so help it by giving it some goals. You will be amazed by what it will do, especially when bolstered with a prayer or two and some plans. So here are a few tips to make 2016 a vintage year: 1. Make a goal list of all the things you want to do and achieve this year. 2. If you have a partner in your life, share and discus with them. You both can have some separate goals but there must be some you can share or want together. 3. Set down some deadlines. Your brain needs some time deadlines to perform well. 4. Plan each goal as you would if you were going on holiday. 5. Now get going! There are some people who MAKE things happen. There are some people who WATCH things happen. There are some people who WONDER what happened. For more detailed information and help join the Denny Business Academy for free.

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning California, when the undercarriage of a B-29 collapsed during an emergency landing. The detonator of the plane’s single nuclear bomb went off causing a fire in which 19 people were killed, including an Air Force general).
rather heart-stopping moment when a robot submersible got hold of it, only to drop it again. Another robot submersible managed to tangle itself in the bomb’s parachute lines; on both occasions it was human divers who sorted out the mess. Ortis, meanwhile, claimed salvage rights to the bomb and was awarded a very substantial but undisclosed out-of-court settlement.
At Palomares a B52 collided with a KC-135 tanker while refuelling over the coast of Spain. All four of the tanker’s crew and three of the bomber’s crew of seven were killed. Three of the B52’s bomb load of four hit the ground near the fishing village of Palomares and the other drifted out to sea. The detonators of two of the three that fell ashore were ignited, scattering plutonium over an area of three square kilometres. The US Government subsequently paid out $120m in compensation to 500 local residents who suffered radiation sickness; no-one knows how many Spaniards died as a result but local people working on the clean-up operation were not issued with the protective gear worn by the US personnel engaged on the same task.
After Palomares the USAF seems to have learnt a lesson either about air safety or about the reporting of nuclear incidents involving its aircraft, because only one such has been recorded since, and then in conditions that were egregiously harsh. On January 21st 1968 a B52 crashed immediately after take-off in appalling weather in Greenland. The detonators of all four bombs exploded, setting fire to the plane’s 35,000 gallons of fuel and generating such intense heat that one of the warheads actually melted.
The B28RI nuclear bomb, recovered from 2,850 feet (870 m) of water, on the deck of the USS Petrel
Trident: to renew, or not to renew? This is perhaps not the place to air the pros and cons of the nuclear debate but it is an opportunity to remind readers that January 17th is the golden anniversary of one of the worst – and thankfully almost the last – accidents that the US Air Force had with its nuclear bombs. Many people are surprised to learn how many air crashes or similar accidents involving nuclear bombs there were in the early years of the atomic era. The USAF and US Navy between them suffered an amazing 27 between 1950 and 1968, in which 70 aircrew were killed. In almost all cases the detonators of the bombs being carried blew up, although the bombs themselves didn’t. (Well, you’d probably already know if any had!) The Palomares Incident, in which seven crewmen died, was the last but one of these nuclear near-nightmares, although far from the worst. (That was on August 5th 1950 at Fairfield-Suisin Air Force Base, Page 40
The whole thing ended more as farce than tragedy: a Spanish fisherman, Francisco Ortis, saw where the missing bomb had splashed down and guided a recovery fleet of 26 US Navy warships to the spot. It had rolled into a deep underwater trench and took three months to locate and recover: there was a
Anyway, since then, nothing. Not a single bad day at work has been reported. So, since we started by talking about Trident, let’s move on to the safety record of Soviet nuclear submarines. On second thoughts, let’s not!

TwoCan is named Gloucestershire’s ‘agent of the year’ Staff at one of Gloucestershire’s newest property agencies are celebrating after recently being named Gloucestershire’s ‘Agent of the Year 2015’ by an independent customer review site. TwoCan only launched in June 2015, but the team of three has been steadily building a strong reputation for its experience, quality service and results since then. This week raterAgent awarded Gold to the TwoCan team in recognition of its five-star ratings from customers. “Customer satisfaction is vital to us,” explained Danielle McAfee, Branch Manager. “We want all our clients to be happy with the service we provide, and we aim to impress people by doing business in an open and honest way.
“Recommendations from customers are a powerful endorsement and we hope the reviews on raterAgent – and this Gold award from the site itself – will give people confidence to try TwoCan if they are looking to sell or let their home. “It’s a great honour to be named Gloucestershire’s ‘Agent of the Year’, but we need to work hard to maintain and improve upon this great start we’ve made.” TwoCan is owned by Two Rivers Housing, a local charity providing homes to rent at low prices. TwoCan markets homes for sale and private rent, in order to generate profit that will be gifted to its parent charity, thereby helping it to continue its work to provide affordable homes. Satisfied customers reported on TwoCan’s “helpful, enthusiastic and professional” service, an “excellent experience” and how they kept
Judging Newent’s Christmas windows was no pantomime! Newent’s shopkeepers were set a ‘Pantomime’ theme for the town’s annual Christmas window display competition in December. The joint winners were Pippins Greengrocers and Newent Association for the Disabled’s Old Shambles Charity Shop. Second place went to New Start for Cats. To quote the judges “We were impressed by all the many traders’ efforts. Well done! The entries were all so different. The charity shop window was a dark, bejewelled mysterious evocation of Aladdin’s cave, while Pippins’ comic take on Jack & the Beanstalk made us laugh out loud. The Cats shop window has been beautifully crafted with handknitted characters from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It just goes to show the inventiveness and variety of Newent’s traders.” Newent is well known for holding seasonal themed shop window displays throughout the town. Christmas is one of the most popular. As

Newent's Christmas Light Switch On 2015 It seems most of Newent came together for the turning on of the Christmas lights. Despite bad weather the turn out was very good.
During the evening the crowd was entertained by carols, beautifully sung by the Newent Community Choir, and songs from the wonderful Rosita.
This time, the committee had decided to include a parade before the event. It went from the Rec to the Market House, and was well attended and very successful. Joseph Mary and their donkey led the parade which included a number of well-thought-out floats and parade walkers.
Santa met children in the Market Hall after helping to turn the lights on whilst there were stalls set up around the Market House all evening.
The lights were turned on by Elsa and Anna from the film Frozen aided by our very own Fairy Queen Kerri. Entertainers included Olaf from Frozen, Noddy and Big Ears, a stilt walker and a fire entertainer.
These stalls included Maggies Kitchen, supplying unique hot chillie recipies together with festive chillies, jams and jellies; hot soup and drinks supplied by Friends of Newent Community School; artwork from members of the Gloucester & Forest Alternative Provision School and a raffle at the Newent RFC stall to raise funds for the club. - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography
Lloyds Bank to close its Newent branch in April Local residents and traders are unhappy about Lloyds Bank's decision to close its Newent branch. From April onwards, their nearest branch will be in Gloucester, forcing them to do a 10 mile trip to get their banking done. Lloyds based its decision to close its Newent branch on the fact that their counters were 12% quieter in 2015 than in the year before. Local traders are disappointed but have at least Barclays and the Post Office to get some banking done locally. Page 46

The importance of brushing your dog’s teeth

07847018053
OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK Fully licensed and insured
Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth from an early age can prevent serious medical issues such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Don’t expect them to thank you for it though. Most dogs dislike having their teeth brushed, but starting a routine while they are still young will help you both adjust. You’ll need to buy toothpaste specifically for dogs, as the fluoride in human toothpaste is poisonous to them. Gain their confidence slowly It is a good idea to let them get used to the taste of toothpaste before brushing. They should lick it off your finger to start with, and then off the brush you are going to use.
WE HAVE A LOT TO OFFER:
Kids birthday parties from £10 per child Lessons: £7 for 20 mins one to one, £15 for 30 mins and £20 for 45 mins
Group Lessons: £10 for 45 min £20 per hour for Hacks around May Hill Fun Days from £20
Barrel Lane, Longhope, Gloucestershire
Once accustomed to the taste of their toothpaste and the sight of the brush, it won’t be such a shock when you first brush their teeth properly. What type of brush? There are various types of toothbrush on the market for your pet – some people prefer to use a ‘finger brush’ when their dog is young, as this type of brush is soft and small, giving you more control when brushing. As your dog grows, however, a larger brush may be more suitable, and these are available in various shapes and sizes. Initially, it is a good idea to only brush your dog’s front teeth – let them get used to that and then gradually try to brush more. Reassuring the dog will help, as will treating them to a game or a walk afterwards. http://uk.pedigree.com/healthand-training/keeping-yourdog-healthy/how-to-brushyour-dogs-teeth http://www.cesarsway.com/ dog-care/dog-health/7-tipsfor-doggie-dental-care By Ann Haldon

Parkinson’s UK North Forest group moving to a bigger venue
Parkinson’s UK is pleased to announce that due to an increase in demand, the Parkinson’s UK North Forest group will be moving to a new and bigger venue this month. The first meeting at the new venue, Malswick House, Malswick, Newent, GL18 1HE, will take place on Monday 11th January from 10.30am – 12pm. The group usually meets on the second Monday of every month. Parkinson’s UK Volunteer Co-ordinator for the area, Jane Henderson, said: “We offer information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson's, their families and
carers, and also organise regular events and social activities. We started off our group with around 10 members, and now have 30 on the membership list. It is great to see how the group has grown and developed, and I would encourage any local person affected by Parkinson’s to come along to our new venue, to meet other people in the same position. The group is also planning to pilot a ‘Dance with Parkinson’s’ group in 2016 and is looking for funding for it now, so it is an exciting time for the North Forest group”. For more information contact Jane Henderson, Parkinson’s UK Volunteer Co-ordinator, on 03442253694 or jhenderson@parkinsons.org.uk.

New Year’s Revolution Organise your life the electronic way and stick to those resolutions
In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fully-featured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, Sat-Nav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, though. If your resolution was to lose weight, a set of smart
scales - from around £29 for stand-alone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason standalone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out

nutritional information from them automatically. More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join like-minded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost. QUEUES LIKELY could refer to Christmas shopping, the January sales, or any time you’re desperate to use a public convenience.
Sign of the Times
CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG might describe a successful day at the greyhound track. HIDDEN DIP could indicate someone has moved the guacamole, or that there’s an unexpected dance move coming.
These days we are deluged with information and constantly talked down to. Now we apparently need warnings on takeaway coffee cups that CONTENTS MAY BE HOT. Well, duh! What I like to do is take a phrase out of context and imagine where it might be better applied. I see KEEP OFF THE GRASS or REDUCE SPEED NOW and I can’t help thinking they’d both be ideal for a Drug Rehabilitation Clinic. HAND WASH ONLY would look perfect above a sink and USE NO HOOKS is surely the best way to write a terrible thriller. TEMPORARY LIGHTS could be an advertisement for Christmas decorations, while
WORKS EXIT could be a term for a redundancy programme, retirement, or even a staff walkout (if anyone can remember those!). WEAK BRIDGE means it’s time to learn a new card game, or to give up on that yoga class. HARD HAT AREA is a fancy term for a head and MEETING POINT is perfect for a Friday night in a pub. I would love to see THIS DOOR IS ALARMED next to TRAFFIC CALMING. The one that really gets under my skin is GATES IN CONSTANT USE because they never are, and believe me I wait around to check. Hartpury Primary School Building Community Links At Hartpury C of E Primary we are able to provide some outstanding opportunities for our children that are unique to our school. Situated a short distance away is the nationally renowned Hartpury College. The college has had a reputation for many years of producing sportsmen and women of the highest calibre; many of which represent national teams in their chosen sports. As a school we have worked in partnership with the college to aid their teaching programs and also benefit our children as a result. Each term the college provides transport for a class of children to attend the bespoke facilities of the sports college. Once there, the further education coaching students provide sports tuition. Students are guided by the school’s planning and with their own sporting expertise deliver an outstanding program of sports coaching. The college facilities have allowed children to be taught a range of sports including: rugby, football, hockey, badminton, volleyball and tennis. One of the most successful programs has been the teaching of fundamental movement skills to our reception class. The class of 15 four and five year olds are presented with a range of activities that have been carefully structured to allow them to further develop the key skills needed in sports. The most exciting thing for me as a head teacher is to see our children receive 1 to 1 tuition that is individually tailored to each child – this is something that we could never achieve in our own setting. Both the children and the students thoroughly enjoy the sessions and both gain valuable learning experiences that help to shape the coaches
Busy Month Ahead at Sheppard House Sheppard House ended 2015 with their traditional Christmas Party and began 2016 with a New Year's Party. A visit to the pantomime was fitted in between. The Ladies Arts and Craft Group is going to be busy in January, first of all recycling Christmas cards, and then working towards
and sportsmen and women of the future. The link however does not end there! Many people will be unaware that the college has many more facilities and as a primary school these are excellent for providing children with hands on experiences that inspire creativity in the classroom. Children from Hartpury C of E primary have visited the working dairy to see where their food really comes from; they have visited the vetinary department and met animals including: lizards, giant tortoises, wallabies, meerkats and tarantulas. Our reception children had the most amazing experience handling some of the less pleasant creatures! Furthermore, our school choir make an annual visit to take part in the college’s Christmas celebrations and sing accompanied by the college band. All in all, it is a wonderful relationship that continues to flourish and provide Hartpury C of E Primary children with unique and memorable learning experiences. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Hartpury C of E Primary. Please feel free to contact the school office on: 01452 700446 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - Tony Larner, Head teacher

There will also be a Winnie the Pooh day on 18th January, as it's the day his creator author Alan Alexander Milne was born. Haggis will be on the menu on Burns Day, whilst Rock & Roll Dancing and singing are also on the calendar. Tai Chi, Scrabble and jigsaw puzzles are part of the agenda as well. January will be a month with something for everyone!

Finance A Fresh Financial Start in 2016 – Begin the New Year with a Budget By Ann Haldon
If you’ve overspent this Christmas, you might be wondering how to get your finances back under control. It’s easy to get carried away by the spirit of giving – the problem is, it can jeopardise your financial wellbeing into the New Year and beyond. So what can you do to get yourself back onto a firm financial footing? One of the first things is to analyse your finances and make a realistic budget. By taking a long-term view and identifying exactly how much you spend during the course of a year, you can take back control of your dwindling finances, and prevent spiralling into long-term debt. Why budget? A budget helps to establish whether you’re living beyond your means. This isn’t always obvious on a day-to-day basis but if you’re constantly spending more than you earn, at some point you might find yourself unable to keep a roof over your head. But there’s a secret to making a budget that’s fit for purpose, and that’s to incorporate every expense that you make during Page 60
the course of the year, including Christmas, birthdays, summer holidays and more. It will provide an accurate view of your financial position, rather than just a snapshot of a couple of months’ spending habits. This makes it more realistic and, with a bit of willpower, more likely that you’ll stick to it. Birthdays and Christmas Friends’ and family birthdays may only cost a few pounds here and there, but over the course of a year, and in addition to Christmas expenses, they constitute a significant chunk of annual expenditure. Some households spend hundreds of pounds on Christmas presents, food and family treats, but these are often omitted from a budget because they aren’t regular monthly outgoings. Scrutinising your bank statements for just a couple of months doesn’t provide the bigger picture. It’s going to take some time to calculate your total spend for the year, but once it’s done you’ll be able to use it confidently to improve your long-term financial situation, and set yourself up for a
lifetime of control. So what else do you need to include in your budget, apart from birthdays and Christmas? Non-regular expenses, plus how much is coming in Motoring costs such as car insurance, tax, new tyres and the annual service are easily forgotten. Annual membership subscriptions are also often left out, as is one of the biggest expenses of the year - the summer holiday. Even the cost of a daily coffee adds up over time. So have a good think and include expenses large and small: weekly, monthly and annually. When thinking about the money that comes in, don’t forget to include wages, benefit and pension payments, and any income from savings, investments or selfemployment. Once you’ve totalled the figures, deduct your expenses and hopefully you’ll be left with a positive number. If you spend more than you earn, now at least you can do something about it. Not a static document Your budget isn’t meant to be

a static document. It needs to reflect your income and spending in the long-term, and this is likely to change often. So make it part of your routine to update it regularly, and make sure new expenses and sources of income are carefully recorded. Having a clear idea of where your money goes will also help to meet specific financial goals such as saving for retirement, putting money away for a deposit, or simply avoiding debt. Achieving financial clarity in this way helps you to live the life you want, so don’t view it as a restriction on spending – it’s more like the road to freedom. A budget planner online? Is it easier to stick to a budget and update it regularly when it’s online? Well, it can be quicker
if you’re already using the computer, and the calculations are made for you, but there’s also a lot to be said for using a physical budget planner. It’s more visible and accessible to keep a check on your spending, and this alone could provide the motivation to stick to it. You can put it on the fridge, or on the wall in front of you while you’re working. Building a secure financial future is the aim of the exercise, so choose the method that suits you best. So you’ve got all your figures – what now? There’s a great way to divide up your money called ‘piggybanking.’ It’s described in detail on the Money Saving Expert website, and essentially means opening a separate
bank account for each of your main categories of spending. You would need your main bank account, plus another one for bills. Thinking about your major expenditures, you might have three more accounts for: • a summer holiday • a new car • Christmas This allows you to allocate an amount of money to each one via standing order from the main account. The word ‘budget’ often implies having to go without, but knowing your spending patterns and gaining financial control can give you back your freedom – the freedom to enjoy life without the worry of debt. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/banking/Budget-planning

Since switching to E-cigarettes my cough has disappeared and people keep mentioning how much better my skin is.” Steve “I have found it difficult. You still need good old will power but it’s been 3 months now without a cigarette which is the longest I have ever gone, and with help from Stacey, I’ve cut down on my nicotine intake too.“ Mandy “I have had health problems and was told I needed to give up smoking, and after several failed attempts I was desperate so decided to try an ecig. All five students had good rapport with the audience, and presented sound and well-researched arguments on various topics. The winner was Magdalina Kensy, a school exchange student from Germany who spoke on the pressures on young girls to conform to the media’s image of physical perfection. She is at Newent for one year to improve her English, and her delivery and grasp of her subject impressed the judges. All the presentations were of a high standard. The students had clearly been well prepared for what for some was their first experience of public speaking.
Newent School students Magdalena Kensy (winner of the Rotary Public Speaking Competition), Director of Sixth Form Lisa Rogers, Anasthasia Harris, James Bolton, Jordan Buckley and Richard Weaver Rotary cheque Presentation to Maggies Cancer Charity Christine Trigg rep her Family and Newent Rotary Club, handed a £1941 cheque to Debbie Dundas (Maggies) at a formal presentation at the Greenway Hotel, Shurdington, Cheltenham. Also present were the Mayor & Mayoress of Gloucester and the Mayor & Mayoress of Cheltenham.
The money was raised in the summer from the Rotary event ‘Ride4Dave’ in memory of Christine’s late husband Dave Trigg (a Rotarian) and from a gala Sunday lunch at Barrie and Mary Freeman’s home.

Also, passengers in the old car were the two Frozen characters, Anna and Elsa, who actually switched on the lights. Congratulations to all those who organised and helped out on the day, a brilliant evening of fun for the community.
