DEMENTIA AND THE NEW YEAR Forget Me Not, our spikey but soft friend says… A new year signals a new start, and what better time to reassess life and set some resolutions to help you and your loved one live well with dementia this year…
1. Help your loved one sort out their affairs - If they haven’t already
started organising things such as setting up Lasting Power of Attorney or ensuring they’ve written a Will, the new year could be a good excuse to make them sit down and get organised. The sooner it’s done, the better, because if it’s left too late, or until your loved one starts to lose their mental capacity, the process can be more complicated.
2. Help them make their bucket list - A bucket list can help your loved one take back control and add some
much-needed excitement and purpose to life after a dementia diagnosis. It doesn’t have to be filled with crazy stunts or far-flung holidays. It could be something as simple as visiting a particular city in the UK that they’ve never been to, or trying out a hobby that they’ve never done before.
3. Reach out to friends, family and supporters - Caring for someone with dementia can be tough. There’s no question of that. So it’s really important that you make the most of people around you who can help. If family members don’t live nearby or are unable (or even unwilling) to support you, perhaps there are neighbours who can help out with caring or looking out for your loved one with dementia now and again. Remember, you aren’t alone.
4. Check that you’re receiving the right financial support - Both you and the person you care for may be entitled to some benefits to help you along in your dementia journey and the new year is as good a time as any to reassess the financial situation. For example, the person you care for might be entitled to a Personal Independence Payment, while you may be eligible for a Carer’s Allowance.
5. Help them create their life story - Connecting with a loved one with dementia can be tricky. They may be
feeling down or stressed at the changes in their memory or agitated at the fact that they can’t remember what happened or who they met last week. However, where they’ll probably still excel is reminiscing about days gone by. That’s why helping them to write their life story can make a great project for the new year. As well as being a satisfying activity that brings purpose to each day, it’s also a very useful tool for you as a carer to reconnect and find topics of conversation that you can both enjoy.
6. Make more time for yourself, including looking after your health - It's all too easy to forget about
yourself when you’re caring for someone with dementia. The problem is that ultimately this does not only impact you, but your loved one too, as you won’t be able to provide the right level of care to ensure their quality of life. Booking in regular ‘me time’ is vital for ensuring that you stay happy and healthy and therefore an effective carer for your loved one. Make sure you schedule it in - try adding it to their care plan. You may also be able to book your loved one in for some respite care. However you choose to get some time for yourself, try not to feel guilty about doing it! Just remember that you deserve this time, and thinking about this is a great resolution to make this year Should you have any questions with regards to the above, or should you require any Dementia Awareness Training, or a talk to a local group in the community, then please contact me. These sessions and talks are free of charge and the more people that know about dementia, the more communities will join together to make life easier for those living with the condition, and those supporting them. If you have any questions or queries regarding the above, please do not hesitate to contact me on email: sarah.davies@fdean.gov.uk or telephone 07914 538616 Sarah Davies, Dementia-Friendly Community Enabler for Forest North Areas

the door it was lovely. It was organised so well and the food was excellent.”
Talented students proved they have the recipe for success as they served up tasty treats at a Tea Party for both parents and grandparents in November.
Lemon drizzle cakes, scones, mini quiches and cheese straws were among the delights cooked up by a dozen Year Ten students and shared with their grandparents, some of whom had never visited the school before and others who represented several generations of Newent Community School students.
Teacher Pippa Palmer who ran the event was delighted with the students, saying: “It was a really positive response from visitors and the students who demonstrated fantastic teamwork and hard work for a brilliant event.” She also expressed her gratitude to parents who came and assisted.
Anne Rogers, grandmother of Emily Mattingley, said: “It was a fantastic spread, there’s so much talent here. I’d never been inside the school before and it was a pleasure to be involved. It was really lovely, I hope we’re invited again.” Emily’s grandfather David Rogers added: “It was superb, a lot of hard work must have gone into it. It was a great insight into what’s going on here”. Emily said: “It’s a really good idea, it includes people who don’t normally get the chance to come to school”.
Newent Community School is recognised by Ofsted as a ‘good’ school, achieving above average results and with relationships between staff and students described as ‘excellent’. The school is also recognised by the Government as a Healthy School, having achieved the Healthy Living and Learning Award. The school recently became the first in the county to achieve the Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning Mental Health Champions Award.
Angela Lloyd, grandmother of Thomas Summers, represents three generations of Newent Community School students. She said: “From being greeted at

Grandparents’ and Parents’ Tea Party
Fourteen and fifteen-year-old students from Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre showed off their cooking, community and teamwork skills at the event. Guests left delighted and declared that it was ‘just their cup of tea.’
Family braved the weather for a magical visit to Santa Despite the heavy downfall of snow on a cold Sunday in December, Louise Williams and husband Andrew braved the weather and drove their 11-year-old son George from Hereford to Lydney so that he could meet Santa on a steam train at the Dean Forest Railway. "We are so glad that we did," said Louise. "We had a fabulous time meeting Santa on the steam train and the snow made it all ever so magical! Our son was amazed by Santa and I just can't thank the team at Dean Forest Railway enough for a wonderfully memorable experience." The volunteer-run heritage steam railway’s four-and-a-half-mile line
runs through the Forest of Dean, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the relaxing pace of a typical country branch line. There are five stations along the route so you can jump off to explore the local area for a woodland walk, visit a country pub or the railway's own licensed station buffet café, or venture down to the Severn estuary to explore Lydney Harbour with its magnificent views across the River Severn. Santa visited the Dean Forest Railway on numerous days throughout December. This is just one of the many events the Dean Forest Railway organises throughout the year. Plans for 2018 include visits by Thomas and Paw Patrol, a diesel engine gala weekend, a steam gala, and much more. Cake and Bake Baked Pears with Cinnamon Oat Topping You can use any pear variety for this winter warming fruity pudding. Serve with custard or crème fraîche and a drizzle of warmed honey, if liked.
Ingredients: • 4 medium-sized firm pears • 150ml apple or orange juice • 50g unsalted butter • 75g rolled oats • 50g Demerara sugar • 25g walnut pieces, chopped • 1tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra to sprinkle
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour
TIP
This recipe will work just as well with crisp eating or cooking apples instead of the pears. Page 8
1.
Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/gas mark 4. Halve the pears lengthways and scoop out the cores with a teaspoon. Place the pear halves in a shallow ovenproof dish, cut-side up.
2. Pour the apple or orange juice into the dish
and dot the pears with half the butter. Cover loosely with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the rest of the butter in a small pan then remove from the heat, add the oats, sugar, walnuts and cinnamon and stir to combine.
3. Remove the foil and spoon the oat mixture
over the top of the pears. Bake the pears, uncovered, for a further 20-25 minutes until tender with a crisp topping. Serve warm, sprinkled with a little more cinnamon, if liked.

Hartpury C of E Primary School’s Design and Technology Kitchen Here at Hartpury C of E Primary School, we are committed to offering all our children a curriculum that is as broad and balanced as possible. To be able to do this, the school constantly reassesses and develops its spaces to get maximum use out of them. One example of this has been when the school increased the use of Ipads within the classrooms, which allowed for the ICT suite to be redeveloped. An eight-week building project has seen Hartpury’s ICT suite transformed into a Design and Technology kitchen area while the old kitchen has been transformed into a beautiful new child-friendly intervention room. The kitchen has ample space for classes and large groups to cook in and the school's amazing cooking expert Mrs Steele will ensure that over the term all the children get to experience cooking a variety of dishes such as hedgehog loaves, Christmas chutney, apple and blackberry crumble and sausage rolls to name but a few. They will often use food grown on the school’s grounds to make the recipes. The kitchen was resourced with brand new equipment with the help of funding from the school's excellent PTA association, ‘The Friends of Hartpury School’. However, the room does not sit idle outside the cooking timetable. As well as being the focus area for the children’s lunches every day, it is also used by teachers to help with the teaching of the maths curriculum in units such as fractions and measurement and to help inspire the children’s written work, e.g. writing instructional texts. The school is therefore delighted with and very excited about the new DT area. If you would like to see it for yourself, feel free to come along and visit. To arrange a tour of the school please contact the School Office on 01452 700446. Page 10

GLOUCESTER ROTARY CLUB SANTA FUN RUN 2017 The first ever Gloucester Rotary Club Santa Fun Run, which took place last month, was blessed with glorious sunshine and a joyous atmosphere! Well done to Rotary President Sue Smith and the whole team for a brilliant effort working for and with the community. The event was lovingly organised; special touches included a string quartet playing Christmas carols beside the Rotary Tree of Light and the local police enjoying a photograph with Mayor Steve Morgan and Sue Smith. There were medals for all and it was great to see people of all ages, along with their gorgeous 4-legged friends, participating in what is hoped will become an annual event. Steve Morgan, Mayor of Gloucester, said he was pleased to support the Rotary Club in their work and was very proud of the way in which the city had embraced the Santa Fun Run, which raises money for local charities. All pictures on this page were taken and kindly supplied by Jan Long (Tel. 01531 650036).
“I must say I am thrilled with the coverage of my charity event in your magazines. I already had a response from people wanting tickets. Thank you so very much!”
“I am very pleased with the response we have had in the Newent Magazine and look forward to our ad going into the Cheltenham issue.”

Santa's first visitors promised to be very very good in 2018 Husband and wife JeanMarie and Junior Brandt from Peterstow were the first in line when they took the whole family along to visit Santa in his Grotto at Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, in December. David and Kayla whispered to Santa what they were hoping to receive for Christmas and promised that they would continue to be very very good in the year ahead. Eldest son Arno said that, although he'd also be very very good he was still making his very very long list and would send it on! Children of all ages came from far and wide to visit the Grotto at Labels in the run-up to Christmas. Proceeds will be going to local charities supported by the
Ross Rotary Club who worked in conjunction with the store. Many more regular events are being planned for the year ahead and will include an Easter Egg Hunt, summer holiday activities and the continuation of the popular monthly craft workshops, to name just a few.
Santa in his Grotto with his able assistant, Happy the Elf.
Keep an eye on the Labels’ website for the latest details – www. labelsshopping.co.uk Labels Shopping is located at Ross Park, just off junction 4 of the M50 near Rosson-Wye and is open 7 days a week. The Brandt family from Peterstow all came along to meet Santa.
Newent and District Probus Club In December, over 50 Newent and District Probus Club members and their wives attended a splendid lunch at the Chase Hotel, Ross-on-Wye, which rounded off the club's 40th anniversary year beautifully. Members have enjoyed a very successful year with a variety of incredibly interesting, eclectic and thought-provoking speakers, a selection of visits to Malvern Theatre and The Royal Mint and, of course, the monthly pub lunches. In addition, the skittles evenings have proved to be well received and thoroughly enjoyed.
The club is thriving with new members joining and appreciating the comradeship and fellowship that the club provides. The club is open to retired or semi-retired professionals and businessmen. Gardener’s Resolve… by Pippa Greenwood
Happy New Year! Now that 2018 is here, what are your garden resolutions for the year ahead? Here are my suggestions… Re-cYcle pots Save all the pots and trays you get when buying plants and rinse them out to use next time you need one. Store the pots away from sunlight to prevent the plastic disintegrating. coveR it up! Make a resolution to dry off and cover up garden furniture once the summer is over, to protect it from rain, cold, ice or even fungi! Buy furniture covers or, better still, store the furniture in a shed or garage if you have one. Stored properly, it will last much longer. GRow YouR owN Aim to grow more of your own fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. This could be buying a couple of tomato plants for the first time, or creating a small herb planter, or it could be larger scale and more complex plans if you’re already big on grow-your-own. Don’t forget that there’s a great choice of UK-grown vegetable plants plus my weekly advice and tips emails at www. pippagreenwood.com/growyour-own. Page 16
compost moRe Once you get in the swing of it, composting becomes second nature. Make sure you include kitchen waste such as vegetable peelings, apple cores. The amount of extra compost you’ll generate will be well worthwhile. Many local councils offer a good deal on basic plastic composters. use tHat space! If you have a cold frame, porch, conservatory or greenhouse, put it to use! Any sort of protected growing area has the ability to increase what you can grow and when you can grow it. So raise your own summer flowers in it, force some bulbs in it in the winter or make off-season sowings of salad crops…make it work, but whatever you do, don’t use it as the family rubbish dump! mulcH moRe Make use of any organic matter that is bulky – mulch with it. Whether it is well-rotted manure, garden compost, the used compost from a seasonal bedding display or growing bag, or leaf mould, make it into mulch! Applied a couple of inches or more deep over the soil surface, a mulch like this will improve the soil’s ability to conserve moisture (so saving you both watering time and
water) and may also help to keep weeds at bay. A win-win situation. pause befoRe You buY When you’re looking through the seed, plant and bulb catalogues, browsing online or wandering around a garden centre, pause before you buy. I know I’m not alone in having eyes that are much bigger than my plot! It is very easy to order more seeds than you’ll ever be able to sow and plants that you’ll never be able to squeeze into your garden. seasoNal saveR Make sure you recycle your Christmas tree. Real trees can be recycled at locations up and down the country – many garden centres and councils offer the service. The trees will be shredded and added to other green materials to make a great soil conditioner and planting mix. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

TOGETHER, LET’S HELP THOSE DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN IN THE WORLD! Despite its growing economy, there is still considerable poverty in India. Without a welfare state, as we know it, Indian and UK Rotary Clubs are an important safety net for disadvantaged Indian children. Ten years ago, several Newent Club members, while in India for a family wedding, visited a primary health care centre in a nearby village that had previously been upgraded with financial support and equipment from the Newent Club in co-operation with the Pune Rotary Club. Since then there have been several joint Rotary projects to help both a special school and a boys’ and girls’ reform school. The Newent Club’s latest joint project is to help the Zilla Parishad School in Dhamne, a few miles from Pune, to become a ‘Happy School’. The children are very keen to learn, but the school environment lacks the basic facilities that we take for granted. At present, many of the toilets are unusable, the roof is leaking and the buildings and surrounding play areas need renovating. We want the children

Home & Interiors Light Up Your Winter
By Katherine Sorrell
In the darkness of deepest winter, pay attention to your lighting. Could a quick update make it bright where necessary, cosy where wanted and as fashionforward as anyone could desire?
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR LIGHTNING • Using just one central pendant to illuminate a room creates a flat light with dark corners, making the space seem dull and small. If you are renovating, now’s the time to add wall lights, install some additional ceiling lights, or include some track lighting in cornices or bookcases. • To improve a boring lighting scheme quickly and easily, add extra lights at different heights – a table lamp in the corner, a floor lamp in other, maybe a clip light attached to a shelf. The aim is to create layers of light that come from different directions, and that you can adjust to suit your mood or the way you’re using the room. • Think about bulbs – save money by changing to LEDs, which last for years and are very cheap to run. How ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ they are is marked in kelvins - look for around 2,700K for a pleasant indoor light. Dimmer switches give flexibility to your lighting, but they’re not always compatible with LEDs, so check with your electrician. • ‘Smart’ lighting is the way to go – use a remote control or an app on your phone to dim your lights, switch them on and off or even change their colours. Page 26
This smoky glass and brass table lamp would make a great update for a modern or retro-style living room. Boho smoke grey and brass table lamp, £180, Alexander & Pearl. Changing a pendant light can create a fabulous focal point in a room. The eight baubles on this contemporary chandelier cascade pretty, ambient light. Bubble chandelier, £79.99, Dowsing and Reynolds. This wonderfully sleek pendant light features a built-in, dimmable LED panel so you can adjust the light level to suit your mood. Shown here in Petrol, it is also available in Pearl, Forest, Anthracite, Ruby and Saffron. Asteria pendant, £179, Black By Design. Great for a party – or even every day – plug in a colourful, neon lamp and illuminate your space with style. Lumosnap neon lights, £22-£50, Gingersnap.
Smart lighting systems are easy to use and surprisingly affordable. Tradfri dimming kit, from £15, PS 2017 Table Lamp, £25; both Ikea. Illuminate a corner of your living room – and provide a snugly spot for curling up with a good book – by swapping a tired old floor lamp for a good-looking, on-trend new one. Slam Dunk floor lamp in antique brass, £175, Loaf.

The Federation of Newent Schools Community Spirit One area that we are really proud of at The Federation of Newent Schools is our close relationship with the local community. The schools, Picklenash and Glebe, have a long-established relationship with local businesses and local events. This allows the children to give something back to their own community and build a pride in the place where they live. This year the schools have already taken an active role in supporting the local constabulary with sharing important messages to local residents regarding burglary prevention. A number of children, supported by PC Josh Griffiths, have been able to aid in leaflet drops around the local community. Dressed in full police uniform, the children were able to go and spread this important message whilst having the opportunity to discuss with PC Griffiths his role. The children had a great time and were really proud of the work they had done. In the new year, the children will be aiding in helping to raise awareness around speeding – utilising the speed gun and issuing tickets to road users not abiding by the rules of the road.
Furthermore, the school’s fantastic music culture has meant that our talented choir have been able to raise the spirits of some of Newent’s more elderly residents. During the Christmas period, they were able to visit Highfields Residential Home and Shepherd House providing a beautiful mix of new and traditional Christmas carols. The residents had the most wonderful time and the children sang brilliantly. However, the most important part was that they were able to provide a service to others within the community. As a Federation, we are proud to be at the heart of Newent's community and are working hard to be involved in as many aspects as possible. Many of you may have seen our choir perform at the Christmas Lights Switch On in November; as a school, we are currently supporting Newent Rotary’s latest fundraising venture and we also took part in the annual Christmas Tree Festival. As the new year gets into full
swing we will be looking at many other projects including our Junior Wardens project which is very much about raising awareness of young people’s responsibilities to ensure their local town is looked after and kept clean and tidy. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit The Federation of Newent Schools (Glebe Infants & Picklenash Juniors). To arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher, please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589. Tony Larner – Executive Head Teacher
Top job and honour for Phyllis Phyllis Charter, who has served Inner Wheel for many years, has been nominated for and accepted the post of the International Inner Wheel President for 2019-20. Inner Wheel is the largest ladies service organisation in the world with over 100,000 members from more than 100 countries across the globe, which brings into perspective the scope of the role and challenges facing Phyllis. Currently serving as Constitution Chairman on the International Inner Wheel Executive Committee, Phyllis said: "I feel honoured and consider it a privilege to be at the helm of Inner Wheel and look forward to working with my fellow executive members knowing we have busy, interesting and exciting times ahead. With so much uncertainty in the world around us, the need for Inner Wheel friendship and service and the furthering of international understanding is greater than ever.” Page 28
Phyllis served as Newent and District Inner Wheel Club President, before becoming District Chairman, Great Britain and Ireland Association President, and is currently the International Inner Wheel Constitution Chairman. She is seen as one of the ‘Women in action’, working together to make a difference and improve the living quality of those in need with truly life-changing projects, while extending the hand of friendship to create firm and lasting relationships. Past District Governor, Rotarian Paul Charter, remarked that he is immensely proud of his wife and is looking forward to supporting Phyllis in her forthcoming role of International Inner Wheel President. Rotarians and Inner-wheelers everywhere sent congratulations and good wishes to Phyllis. For more details contact Paul or Phyllis on 01452 751161 or 07831 160776

Auction Anecdote The good thing about working in a saleroom is there is never a dull moment – well, hardly ever anyway! Of course, there are plenty of stressful moments and there is always far too much work to get through, but once you get used to not eating lunch before 3.00pm and never finishing any task without hundreds of interruptions, it can be a very lively and enjoyable place to work. The year 2017 has been no exception and we have seen a fabulous assortment of interesting and beautiful items pass through our hands and move on to new homes where they will be used or treasured and admired for many years to come. We also get to meet around 100 to 150 vendors every month, many of whom have become longtime friends. A lot of customers use the saleroom regularly for both selling and buying, and keep coming back over the years. Using the services of an auction room can become a bit of a habit for many people – hopefully, you will agree – a good one! Another important part of the auction industry is that we are also helping the environment by recycling items, some of which might have been thrown away if they had not been spied in a house clearance or brought in for valuation. Of course, antique furniture and home furnishings have an amazingly low carbon footprint and can be used for years and years to come because they were built to last. When an antique chest of drawers starts to look a bit tatty you can send it to the restorers and get it repaired and smartened up, this is far better than sending it to landfill, which is what tends to happen to a certain manufacturer’s furniture – mentioning no names of course! Now that I have finished my end of year ‘chit chat’, I suppose I better provide an interesting picture and sale result to back up all my musings. In our last auction, an elderly lady sold a small number of varied items including an old radio which she explained her husband had told her was very valuable and rare. I am not an expert on radios so I promptly looked it up and found that she was right and that it was the first radio made by Marconi in 1929. I gave a cautious estimate of £150/£200 and waited for the internet to work its magic, which it duly did when the item sold online to a buyer in London for £380. The radio now happily takes pride of place in an enthusiast’s collection and I have once again had an enjoyable and fascinating afternoon researching and learning a little bit about something new. Smiths of Newent Auctions would like to wish all their readers a very Happy New Year and would love to welcome you to their auction room one day in 2018. Their next sale is on the 26th of January with viewing on the day prior from 10.00am to 7.00pm. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

THE MARKET HOUSE
Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor Cllr June Davies
Free Car Parking for Flu Vaccination Clinics
November was a very busy month. Newent Community School & Sixth Form Centre, for the second year running, held a Remembrance Service led by the Rev Simon Mason and members of the Royal British Legion. Members of other organisations were also present, including Council representatives. The service was very poignant and the students must be congratulated on their behaviour.
The Management of Newent Health Centre decided to concentrate the bulk of their 2017 flu vaccination sessions into two Saturdays. The Town Council was able to negotiate with the District Council to have free car parking in the town for those two days. This, along with free refreshments in the Library, provided by other organisations within the town, proved to be very popular. The Health Centre has since reported that 98% of those invited, attended the sessions.
The traditional Remembrance Day Service and Parade was held on the Sunday and I laid the wreath on behalf of the Council at the War Memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard. To coincide with St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival, I decided to organise a Civic Carol Service, led by the Rev Simon Mason. As far as I am aware, this was the first time Newent Town Council had organised such a service. I was pleased to welcome Mayors from other towns, several other Civic Dignitaries and members from local organisations. I am grateful to all those who took part and helped in whatever way. The service was very well attended and Picklenash Choir was a joy to behold! It was an honour to meet Charlotte Dujardin and the magnificent Valegro, together with other members of the team, at the launch of the Valegro Project in the Market Square on 27th of November. I hope you all had a joyous and peaceful Christmas season, and wish you a happy and prosperous 2018.

Local Council Award Scheme Success Newent Town Council has recently been given the Foundation Level Award under this scheme established in 2013 which provides a framework to support all local councils to improve and develop to meet their full potential. The scheme offers councils the opportunity to show that they meet the standards set by the sector and to put in place the conditions for continued improvement.
Christmas Lights This was indeed a brilliant event both literally and figuratively! More people than ever lined the streets to see the procession and the lights themselves seemed bigger and brighter than ever before. The Town Council would like to thank all the sponsors who helped to fund the event and all the people who took part and helped in whatever capacity. Your support is greatly appreciated!
Car Parking in Newent and the Forest of Dean Our main car park in Lewall Street is owned by the District Council and run by APCOA Services. If you are a regular user, a parking permit may be more cost-effective. Starting from £10 per month, permits allow the use all FODDC car parks as well. Call 01452 521284 or email admin.gloucestershire@apcoa.com to request an application form.
