come to the l e July 2014 W edition of Newent Magazine

It's been a busy past month and we have a lot of new advertisers in this month's magazine, and so much community news that I've struggled to get it all in! Thank you to everyone who has sent in local news and events this month!

Need a Website?

Newent Magazine can help! Call Vicky today to discuss what we can do for you. Quality Websites. Affordable Prices.

So summer is finally here, and with England out of the World Cup, at least Wimbledon started soon after to cheer us up a bit! I was lucky enough to get Wimbledon tickets via the ballot, but alas, it was Glastonbury weekend so it rained all day and we only saw one match. But it was still a great experience and I'm now so keen to play a bit of tennis myself! In Newent there is no shortage of sports clubs, so whether you play hockey, tennis, cricket, or like to cycle or run, there is a club so go on and join it if you haven't already. Congratulations to Bob Hill who won the Freedom Embroidery competition of last month. If you're feeling lucky why not enter the Weston Cider competition in this month's issue to stand a chance of winning a ÂŁ20 meal voucher at their Scrumpy House Restaurant. Although most copies of this magazine are delivered door-to-door and it is also availalbe online, we also have pick up points, so I would really like to thank all the pubs, garden centres and post offices who keep copies of the magazine each month, and a special thank you to Gordon & Diane Martin at Gorsley Post Office and staff at Highnam Post Office who include this magazine with their rural deliveries, allowing the magazine to reach an even wider Best wishes, audience. - Vicky (Editor)

Sunny Summer Days... Or Not By Ted Bruning

Ahhh, it’s sunny July at last; the sky is blue; the air is warm and your neighbourhood smells delightfully of sun-tan lotion and barbecue. Of course, being British, we understand that our summers are never a glorious succession of hot dry days and long evenings of tennis and Pimms. Indeed, it has even been known to rain sometimes. But let’s forget about the weather for a moment and focus on the climate – the difference being that the weather is what actually happens to you, while the climate is what weather becomes when people start analyzing it. The other difference is that climate is almost predictable but weather most certainly isn’t. The wedding planners, barbecue chefs, church fête organisers etcetera want to know when is the best time for the wedding/barbecue/fête/ day-trip or whatever? But the best answer is – and it’s a truly British answer, this – none of them. And any of them. So let’s narrow it down. Which is usually the least rainy month of summer? It has to be July, surely. Wrong! July is usually the wettest, actually, with an average of 101mm over the five years 2008-12. Then – another

big surprise – was August with 91.6mm, then September with 77.1mm, and taking gold by a healthy margin, was June with only 50.5mm. Mind you, June 2012 was also the rainiest month of all five summers in the sample with a squelching 157.8mm, and the two biggest rain-induced flash floods in living in memory weren’t in July but August – Lynmouth in 1952 and Boscastle in 2004. This, of course, being the difference between weather and climate. All right then, which is the sunniest, i.e. which has the best average of sunny hours per day (which we shall call SHPD for the sake of brevity)? This one has to be July, right? Uh-uh. The 10-year average for July is 6 SHPD, better than August at 5.5 SHPD and September (when of course the days are shorter anyway) at only 5 SHPD; but the winner is once again June with 6.9 SHPD. Still, July 2013 racked up an average of 8.2 SHPD, which is a record in recent years. July is, at least, the warmest month of summer, with average temperatures ranging from 13.7-23.4C over the past 20 years; but only just. August has been a close challenger, with an average low just edging ahead of July’s at 13.8C but an

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts

average high just missing at 23.1C; so not much in it there. June and September, though, fall woefully short with ranges of 11.8-21C and 11.4-20C – it’s almost as if they aren’t even trying. All this, of course, depends on where you are. The further north you go the colder it gets, right? Well, yes; but not directly because you’re north – England has vineyards at the same latitude that Canada has polar bears. The skies above us are a battleground where four sets of weather fight for supremacy: Western Scotland gets its from the Maritime Polar region (cold and wet); Eastern Scotland and the North of England get theirs from the Continental Polar (cold and dry); Wales and the West Country are at the mercy of the Maritime Tropical (warm and wet); and East Anglia and the South of England bask in the Continental Tropical (warm and dry). Hence the hottest day on record was 10th August 2003 in Faversham, Kent (38.5C), while the coldest was 30th December 1995 at Altnaharran, Sutherland (-27.2C). Well, that’s me decided, then. This year’s barbecues will be in Faversham. Which is handy, because that’s where my Mum lives. Page 5

Newent's First Big Lunch a Big Success

Strawberry Hill Dancers put on a wonderful dance display and music was supplied on stage by The Other Crowd, Vicky Hale, Lisa Jenkins and other acts. Christpher Comer, a stall holder, commented that it was great to see that Newent had rediscovered how to really enjoy themselves again. Money raised would go to local organisations and towards improving the Christmas lights. - by Colin Thomas

Newent's Big Lunch - Picnic by the Lake, took place last month on 1st June on a beautiful sunny day. The event, organised by The Voice of Newent Group was the first Newent had staged and along with the great weather brought out crowds of 400 plus to enjoy the entertainment. It was attended by the Deputy Mayor, Barry Wellington and even Newent's own mascot, Onion Ed. The "Soak the Bloke" was staged in stocks and 2 members of the Voice of the Voice of Newent Group (Kerri Greenwold and Dan Quinton) volunteered to go into the stocks. Storytellers kept children and adults enthralled and the Coconut Shy was so popular that it ran out of coconuts! Newent Hockey Club attended to show youngsters and others the benefits of playing hockey and Newent Barnardo/ Family Tree Children's Centre provided a picnic and games for children. The Petting area with sheep and goats, supplied by Charlotte Ashworth of Char and Andy's Farm Shop, proved very popular with the children and adults alike. Local stalls such as Newent in Bloom, The Veg Out Zone and local traders such as Sweet Memories all helped to make the event a success..

She was supported on the day by family, friends, customers and staff. The Town Mayor, Roger Beard, who also attended said "It is a delight to support such a worthy cause that many of us have to be grateful for". The cut was carried out by Jane Screen and her daughter Lora and once completed Denise said "It was fantastic tto raise such a sum and to be able to do this for my family and Dad".

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood

If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

want to make brand new pots look more weathered try painting them with a solution of plain yoghurt as this will help to encourage rapid colonisation by mosses, algae and lichens. Any new hard landscaping such as wall, paths or patios and terraced surfaces will look best in natural stone and there are now also terracotta tiles available that are suitable for use in the garden. Terracotta tiles can also have a storageheater effect too – after a long, hot day they will have absorbed a good deal of heat and this will then be released gradually in the evening. Add interest to a vertical surface by planting a vine. They have attractive leaves and there are plenty to choose from that will fruit well in our climate. You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you

Try growing your own oranges or lemons. With our generally milder winters some gardeners

are even managing to keep these plants outside all year round with only the minimum of protection. Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. With their wonderful silvery grey leaves and their often rather untidy or gnarled shape, olives too are a plant well worth considering. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ vegetable collection, great plants for September and regular advice emails from Pippa, and a super range of gardening products including Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece

Auction Anecdote Beauty before Age At Smiths June auction the most attractive item of furniture turned out to be a bit of a fraudster since although it looked to be an 18th century piece it actually dated from the early 20th century. This made it only one hundred years old rather than three hundred years old – however this did not seem to deter bidders who simply admired it’s beauty and it sold on the day for £820 against a £500/£700 estimate.

Monthly Sales of Antiques & Collectables A German WWII dagger - Estimate £200/£400

A 9ct gold Rolex watch Estimate £500/£700

Friday 18th July at 10am The piece in question was a small chest of drawers covered to the top and drawer fronts with Dutch style foliage marquetry – sometimes known as ‘seaweed marquetry’. From the exterior the chest looked ancient and there was talk of the piece being a later carcass applied with earlier veneers but Victorian and Edwardian furniture makers could be very clever and it seemed the final verdict was that the chest was a later copy which had been stained and hand ‘distressed’ to give a false impression of age. At the end of the day the piece was popular due to it’s physical beauty rather than it’s age and it appealed to both private buyers and the trade – selling in the end to a trade buyer on the telephone. Smiths forthcoming sales are on the 18th July and 5th September . For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or see our website

Home & Interiors Double-Up Your Space

By Katherine Sorrell

When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. The trick is to forget your preconceptions about where you live and be creative with the space. To get the most out of every inch (vital when you need to double up on what you have), foldaway furniture is a great option to start with, whether it’s a bed, a desk or a dining table and chairs. Next, make the most of any free wall. Peg rails and hanging rails, hooks and shelves – from high above your head to fitted across an alcove, this can be incredibly useful storage. Think high: a raised child’s bed with space beneath for a desk, sofa or play area, for example. Or could you even build a mezzanine sleeping or working space? And think low: slide a truckle bed under a permanent one, or tuck stools under a small table and magically create an intimate dining area. It’s a lateral-thinking approach that’s quick, easy and inexpensive, and that will make your home as functional and as good-looking as you could ever want, no matter what changes come your way in the future.

No room to sit down and eat? Turn a small kitchen into a kitchen/diner with a foldaway table and chairs. The table is attached to a wall with dowels, while the chairs can be hung on a wall hook, nicely out of the way.

community SUMMER TIME – SUN, STRAWBERRIES, PROSECCO AND A LITTLE BIT OF “HOW’S THAT !” Summer is finally here! We’ve been enjoying some wonderful weather and I’ve been making the most of the weather and the local produce – especially those mouth watering local strawberries – who can resist walking past Pippins without picking up a punnet or two? I certainly can’t that’s for sure and sat out on the patio with a cheeky glass of Prosecco really does round off a hard day at work – I’ve even managed to fit in a few glasses down in Cobblers where the lovely Sue keeps them chilled at the ready – perfect for any summers evening! And while I’ve been lazing around with a glass in my hand the local men (and boys) in white have now emerged for the new cricket season. NEWENT CRICKET CLUB under 15’s can be proud, they made it to the County Cup Final and took it to the final over, with three balls remaining. Corse and Staunton made a quite incredible comeback to beat Newent's 97 with three balls remaining. The closest game either side had experienced in a long time. And I hear a little rumour that they have signed a new secret weapon, watch this space.... The Third Team, consisting or players ranging from age 13 to beyond retirement age, won their away match against Lydney - congratulations! Big lunch – BIG SUCCESS! So the first ever BIG lunch in Newent was a roaring success – a HUGE thank you To Voice of Newent – Kerri Greenwold, Sue Eden, Hazel Cutting, Lynn Ashton, Dan Quinton, Colin Thomas and all the others involved - for organizing the

Page 30

Clare's Page

A monthly column written by Clare Page event on Sunday 1st June. The most refreshing thing about the event was it was not one where people / parents had to keep digging in their purses for money – it was good to have a simple event that made a great impact on our Sunday afternoon. Local singer Lisa Jenkinson was perfect for the chilled atmosphere – hoping to hear her again soon. Was great to say Hello to the lovely gang from Newent Hockey Club – so good to make more sports contacts and I reckon that with all the sporty things going on around Newent we’ll soon be looking to host a “Newent Sports Fest” - what do you think to that idea ?

LIVE @ THE LAKE The next event you can return to the lake with your picnics, deck chairs, rugs, gazeboes etc and relax at is the annual and much loved Live @ The Lake music event which is being held on Sunday 20th July. Once again this is a wonderful community afternoon which you really should try not to miss! Meetings are being held and the “behind the scenes” organization is well underway – look out for posters etc around town. (More info p31).

STRAWBERRY HILL'S VERY OWN DANCING QUEENS Strawberry Hill dancers put on an amazing performance back in June at the Phoenix Theatre in Ross-on-Wye. These girls really are amazing to watch – you might have seen some of them at the Big Lunch. This time they were performing to Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ - a Ballet/street styled routine that was choreographed by the girls themselves with some ‘polish’ added by dance school owner Sarah Taylor.

The amazing costumes were from the Strawberry Hill wardrobe – that wardrobe must be a real Aladdins cave of costumes! It’s great to see the talent we have in and around Newent being shared outside of our community. Look out for these lovely dancers at Live @ The Lake this coming month.

MATCHBOXES FOR CHARITY Friends of Pickle Frogs are currently fund raising for outside play equipment and they recently set a challenge for the pupils of Glebe Infants and Picklenash Junior School. Each pupil was given a matchbox to fit the most different items into and to see who could find the most unusual item whilst being sponsored to do so. The participating pupils have raised just short of a thousand pounds. The highest recorded items in the matchbox was 86, with a close 83 and 70 items in second and third place! Some pupils also raised over £100 in sponsorship and are to be awarded prizes for their hard endeavours.

PAINTING BY NUMBERS So once again our Newent Runners ventured out en masse to take part in a PAINT RUN in Hereford. Whilst having oodles of fun and getting covered in paint along the way, the runners were raising vital funs for St Michaels Hospice. Well done to all who took part. Even though a lot of these are normally park runners on a Saturday up at the weekly Newent parkrun, there were 63 runners still taking part in the parkrun!

RAISING THE ROOF – RUGBY AND FOOTBALL TEAMS UNITE Newent RFC and Newent AFC will hold a joint community event at the football clubs ground on Sunday 26th July with a game of footie thrown in too – probably a better game to watch than England in the World Cup... The lads will be raising money to kick start the St Marys Church roof fund. Both clubs benefit from community support and this is their way of showing their gratitude and doing something to benefit the community. The plan is to have a bar, BBQ, bouncy castle etc to keep everyone entertained. A great idea and hopefully they will receive a lot of support. Clare Page also writes a weekly report about Newent in the Wednesday edition of The Citizen.

Newent Scout Group takes action against littering Members of 1st Newent Scout Group gave up their time to take part in a community litter pick as part of the annual Scout Association’s Community Challenge Week at the start of June. The event was supported by the District Council’s Street Warden Team, who supplied litter pick equipment and removed the waste collected by the scouts. The Beavers worked in their Colonies over three evenings to clear rubbish from Watery Lane recreation ground and the Cubs cleared the Lake area in Newent. Over six large bags of waste were collected in total. Anne Lacey Cub Scout Leader of 1st Newent Scout Group said: “This was our second annual litter pick, organised to mark the annual Scout Association’s Community Challenge Week. It was great to see so many of our Scout Group turn up and get involved. Their hard work has made a real difference to the appearance of their local recreation ground and lake.”

Cllr Terry Hale, Cabinet Member for the Community said: “The District Council’s Street Warden Team was delighted to provide litter picking equipment to support the event. It was a great effort by the children of the Scout Group who gave up their own time and worked extremely hard to improve their local area. We think they’ve done their home town of Newent proud.” “If residents are looking to organise their own community litter pick and would like the Council’s support, contact the Street Warden Team on 01594 810000.”

Newent Local History Society The speaker in June was the Society Chairman Dood Pearce, who gave an interesting talk on the History of Water Supply in Gloucestershire. During his working life he had been a water engineer and had collected a large number of photographs, many of them connected with the Newent Supply. He began by showing members how people collected water from wells and springs, and then went on to talk about wooden water mains and water wheel driven pumps. Newent did not have a mains supply until 1909 which came from the Gloucester Corporation pumping station in Horsefair Lane. He showed photographs of the original steam engine and its subsequent replacement by electric pumps. Finally he illustrated the problems that occur when mains burst and reminded members of the efforts put in by the water company to ensure we all have a plentiful and wholesome supply. This was the last meeting at Sheppard House until September. Newent Pumping Station in 1897

Newent’s Got Talent! All too often the increasingly high standard of local music is overlooked. With more and more local musicians showcasing their talent in and around Newent, I spoke with one local band about why they feel that continuing to contribute to the local music scene is so important. The cover band is made up of four former Newent Community School students: Adam Bertenshaw on the guitar, Jack Marley on the drums, Jack Davis on bass guitar and Melissa Wirth on vocals. They perform a variety of genres ranging from Disclosure to Stevie Wonder. Due to the diversity of the music that they produce, it is often necessary for more instruments to be played and this usually comes in the form of saxophonists Tim Owen and Tom Butler, also both previous Newent Community School pupils. I met with the vocalist who gave an insight into the kind of people that their music appeals to. ‘What I like about the material that we do is the fact that people of all ages will be able to enjoy our sets because they feature such a variety of genres. When we last went busking in Cheltenham, it was fantastic to see the crowds we attracted consisting of both young and old.’ The band has come a long way since forming in 2012, being booked to play at local festivals, weddings and pubs. Recently they were asked to perform at the opening of a new cocktail bar in Cheltenham, showing that their musical talent is spreading far and wide across the county. They all have high hopes for the future, however, university commitments make it difficult for the band, Melissa explains: ‘Most members of the band are involved in several other bands at University so it has been a lot harder to arrange practices and all be available for gigs. We were asked to play at Pauntley Beer Festival but unfortunately we were all at University so as a band we had to decline. However I think it’s great to get together and perform because we are all so passionate about the music we do – who knows what will happen after University!’ So, why is local music so important? These local musicians have strong ties to the community and shared with me why it is so vital to maintain this connection. ‘Contributing to the local music scene not only supports your town and brings everyone together to support local talent, but also inspires others to do something good for their local community. We are really appreciative of all the support that we have received from many local residents.’ For more information visit their Facebook page which can be found under the name of ‘Melissa Adam and Jack’ or their YouTube channel at: www.youtube.com/melissawirthox. - by Nikki Timney

Three Choirs Acquires Hampshire Vineyard to Meet Increase in Demand for English Still Wines Renowned English wine producer Three Choirs Vineyard www.threechoirs.com has completed the purchase of Wickham Vineyard in Hampshire. According to Three Choirs’ Managing Director Thomas Shaw, “The purchase of Wickham Vineyard was partly driven by the very strong demand for English still wines, demand that far exceeds our current production levels” “We are delighted to have purchased such a well-known vineyard and look forward to restoring it to its former glory as a producer of quality English wines”. Three Choirs Wickham Vineyard will open in June and in addition to the shop, visitors will be able to dine on a seasonal menu at the on-site restaurant with luxury accommodation constructed later this year. Three Choirs Vineyard wines are stocked by Waitrose and the Wine Society - amongst other smaller retailers and restaurants.

Newent in Bloom

First Aid for Your Dog

Newent is buzzing in 2014 as it enters for Heart of England in Bloom and celebrates it’s 10th year. This year Newent is entering Heart of England in Bloom (HEIB), the only town in the Forest of Dean district to take part in this prestigious campaign. The theme is ‘planting for pollinators’ with particular emphasis on bees but also including butterfly-friendly gardening and displays. The town’s HEIB entry is in addition to Newent in Bloom’s annual best gardens competition in which every frontage in Newent is viewed by a team of local judges from the start of July, and hosted this year by Transition Newent The judges from Heart of England in Bloom will be in Newent on Monday 14th July at 2pm and will be touring the town until 4.30pm. They not only look for horticultural excellence, but also for evidence of community involvement, civic pride and environmental responsibility.

On Saturday 14th June, a group of eager dog owners and trainers gathered at the Kings Arms in Newent to learn how to administer first aid should their pet be ill or injured. They heard about the common conditions affecting dogs, practised bandaging techniques and learned how to perform CPR on a specially-designed ‘resuscidog’ similar to the mannequins used in human first aid training. The course was run by Sylvia Wilson, a veterinary surgeon based in Oxenhall, who can be contacted

via www.vetfirstaid.co.uk.

Households are asked to display a sign of support in their windows, and to tidy their frontages in time for the judges’ tour, so as to show off the town at its best. The judges route takes in Ross Rd, Bradford’s Lane, Glebe Close, Watery Lane, Church Way, Court Road, Holts Rd, High St, Broad St and Church St, the schools, Newent Lake, St Mary’s Church, the Allotments together with the Arboretum. This year Newent in Bloom is celebrating it’s 10th successful year and the Royal Horticultural Society is celebrating it’s 50th year. To celebrate all this many of the town’s displays will include the colour gold. If you would like to welcome the judges to Newent, come to the Good News car park at 2.05pm on Monday July 14th and bring something gold coloured to wave or wear! -by Colin Thomas
