AN OFFER NOT TO BE SNEEZED AT I am welcoming the arrival of July this year, not just because it’s a lovely summer month, but because it should only be a couple of weeks before the grass pollen hay fever season starts to die down. It’s typically at its worst from mid-May, although some people are allergic to other pollens, not just grass, so have prolonged symptoms. This year has been awful though and even people who really don’t suffer as such, have reported bouts of sneezing. I am not taking a holiday until the end of August this year, so my summer will be days out in our beautiful countryside, albeit with tablets and tissues packed in my bag. I am particularly looking forward to a day out with my godchildren at the end of this month. We are going to take them to Cotswold Farm Park for the day. Their Maize Maze,
which opens on the 21st, just sounds like so much fun – the kids are going to love it and I am sure so will the adults! I also can't wait to see all the cute animals at the farm! There have been lots of "awwww" sounds coming from the Glos Directories team when I clicked my way through a selection of animal pictures provided by the Farm Park while choosing this month's front cover image. Now, if pictures already evoke such a reaction, how great is seeing the real thing going to be! And who am I to have all the fun by myself? Why not take part in our competition for a chance to win a family ticket to the Cotswold Farm Park? It couldn't be easier! See page 9 to find out more.

Short Story
Dolphin Watching By Jackie Brewster “It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin-watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar 6
gate, and cheerfully skidded on loose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings, they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels. “I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks. “I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.” “Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said. “Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.” “Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some
eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?”
“Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.”
“Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull. A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park,” the girl said.
The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two-minute walk.”
&
“How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled.
“What car park?”

“Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat,” Royce said, pretending not to hear.

Family Day Out
SUMMER AT COTSWOLD FARM PARK Cotswold Farm Park is a great way to spend a sunny day this summer, with lots of outdoor activities to entertain people of all ages. The Maize Maze will be returning to the Cotswold Farm Park and will be open from the 21st July to the 2nd of September. This year, the theme of the maze is ‘Wonderland’. The Mad Hatter will be up to his usual tricks and there will be a delightful tea party in the centre of the maze. The usual Farm Park fun will be happening indoors, visitors can enjoy the different seasonal demonstrations; watch a cow get milked in the Milking demonstration and learn about sheep through the ages with the Sheep show.
There is also plenty of chances to get close to the animals, including bottle feeding of lambs and goats and cuddling cute chicks and fluffy bunnies. Take a stroll through the Rare Breeds Through History walk where the animals can be hand fed - the greedy goats will be your best friend if you have a bag of animal food in your hand! The Farm Park is open daily from 10.30am to 17.00pm and all activities including the Maize Maze is included within the standard cost of admission. Visit www.cotswoldfarmpark.co.uk for more information. Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate, but are always cheapest when purchased online.

BRITISH LEGION CENTENARY CELEBRATION CONCERT This year, the Newent and District Branch of the Royal British Legion will, along with the rest of the country, be commemorating the centenary of the ending of the First World War as well as the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force. As a departure from the usual commemoration, the Branch has decided to mark the centenary as a celebration of the men returning home and has therefore titled the concert “Coming Home”. Those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and did not return will also be remembered. The Branch will put together a great concert at Newent Community School on 23rd November at 7pm (doors open at 6.30pm). Tickets are priced at £7 (£5 for under 16’s). The objective is to achieve a celebration through music, art and poetry. It is very much a local event and the Branch is hoping that the people of Newent will support this once-in-a-lifetime celebration. They are asking the trading community of Newent to show solidarity for this event by dressing their shop windows as a celebration of the servicemen returning home after WW1. The concert will be entirely self-funded, with no grants, and the Branch is looking for gestures of support from the community by way of raffle prizes, donations, sponsorship, display of posters, etc. To help the effort the Branch will be holding a special meeting for anyone who is interested in finding out more or helping in any way at Cobblers (back room) in Newent on Monday 9th July at 7pm. You can contact the Branch on newent.secretary@rbl.community or by phone on 07771 811759. - Written by Colin Thomas

Auction Anecdote This anecdote illustrates how specialists effectively use the internet to locate niche collectables at auction even when a catalogue description is not quite all it should be! Of course, in an ideal world, the valuer identifies an item correctly and once the auction catalogue goes online potential buyers receive an email notifying them of the lot details. However, in many collecting fields the buyers are very pro-active, searching items out themselves that may not have been fully or correctly catalogued. In fact, these items often seem to make higher prices as buyers get very excited about the fact that they have found a ‘sleeper’. Just before our June sale, we received a small consignment of mixed items including a very interesting tinplate clockwork figure of a carnival drummer. The figure was obviously of some age so I immediately picked it out and started researching it, trying to discover the manufacturer. Unfortunately, the figure was not labelled in any way and I was unable to find it on a number of specialist websites which we subscribe to. In the end, I even tried Google and a number of reference books and toy magazines. However, it was all to no avail and despite trying to research the figure several times I had no joy and was left feeling frustrated that I could not do it justice. Imagine my pleasure therefore when it was ’picked up’ online by a number of potential buyers. The figure eventually sold on the telephone for a very satisfying £500 and I managed to track down the delighted buyer to ask more about it. Apparently, it is a rare figure made around 1900 by a good quality German manufacturer called Gunthermann who never marked their wares (not helpful). He explained that the maker was better known in America so at least I have some small excuse for my ignorance. Ms Harrill receives MBE for services to education As a result of the amazing work of Ms Di Harrill and her team, the PSHE curriculum at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is recognised locally, nationally and internationally as a beacon of excellence. Di has been a teacher at Newent School for 33 years. After initially teaching Art and PE she began working within the pastoral system. This is where her passion for helping young people make appropriate life choices really started. Over the years Di has supported teachers locally and nationally by providing training and resources in areas such as sexual consent, exploitation, dementia and issues around emotional resilience. Her outstanding work regularly features in national publications and is informing best practice documentation with the Department of Education. She organised the innovative ‘Getting Court’ programme which received a community award and an invitation to visit Buckingham Palace. Most recently she is creating cyber safety resources for the National Cyber Security Centre in London that will be used in primary and secondary schools. Newent Community School is recognised by Ofsted as a ‘good’ school, achieving above average results and with relationships between staff and students described as ‘excellent’. The school is also recognised by the Government as a Healthy School, having achieved the Healthy Living and Learning Award. NEWS FROM LITTLE PICKLES PLAYGROUP
NEWENT WAR MEMORIAL Over the last three years, Newent Local History Society has been writing a book about the men whose names appear on the Town’s War Memorial. This massive research project has been carried out by seven members of the Society headed by the Chairman Dood Pearce. During this research, it became evident that a number of names had been missed off and steps are being taken to rectify this. These have also been included.
Great excitement! They're here! Our latest arrivals, two guinea pigs, have moved in plus hutch and run. Thanks to a donation from the Newent Triathlon Committee and advice from Newbridge Farm Park, we are happy to welcome what will be a great experience for our children. Since last September we have been fundraising (Quiz Nights, cake stalls, a hamper raffle and a sponsored 'Scavenger Hunt'). As a result, new equipment has been purchased and the leaky roof on 'Karen's Kabin' has been sorted. Thank you to everyone who has helped us achieve all this! Our Rising 5's have made half-termly visits to the wildlife area at Picklesnash School under the guidance of Hester of 'Nature Explorers' to learn more about the natural world. Visits have also been made to Glebe Infants to use their hall and PE equipment. All activities for our children are planned by highly qualified staff, who are always aware of each child's individual needs. The staff attend meetings and courses and are fully committed to the children in their care. In July we say cheerio to 24 children who are well prepared for their next learning experience. Spaces are available for September. We also run a Stay & Play session every Wednesday (1pm-3pm). For more information call 01531 828076, email littlepicklesplaygroup@eygloucestershire.co.uk or follow us on Facebook. 20
The book is due to be published at this year’s Onion Fair on September 8th and will cost £12. There will also be a display on show in St. Mary’s Church telling the story of the men who died. They are buried or commemorated all around the world from both World Wars. Many died in action and their bodies were never recovered, others died in accidents or from illness, some as prisoners of war. The story of their lives and families and the circumstances of their death are all faithfully recorded for future generations, and it is fitting that the book will be published in the 100th anniversary year of the end of World War I.

NEWENT & DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB While being a Rotarian often involves working within our community, organising charitable events to raise funds for worthwhile local, national and international projects, interesting speaker meetings and other activities, it also involves having fun! Our latest ‘fun’ project is the design, construction and painting of our new soapbox racer! Forget formula one, our racer flies, but with no engine. It purely relies on the driver’s weight, the downhill track and its excellent design! Our first race entry is planned for the Fun Day at Richard’s Castle on Sunday 8th July (10am - 4pm). There are lots of other activities happening on the day too, so why not pop along and see how we are doing with our first race attempt? The Club also plans on entering other local races during the summer. Hopefully,
Wonderful World Cup Week
Last month we held our annual healthy week at The Federation of Newent Schools. The children were learning all about healthy lifestyles and most importantly getting outside and making the most of our fabulous outdoor areas. 28
this will include the Coleford Soapbox Derby and the Eastnor Castle event. Our ambition is to qualify for the Redbull National circuit of events if all goes well! If you would like to join in the fun or just see what Rotary membership involves, then come along to one of our weekly Tuesday meetings at the Three Choirs Vineyard. However, please contact our Secretary first on 07794 644 380 or e-mail rochehighnam@btinternet.com, thank you.
The most exciting part of the week for most was the build-up to the start of the Football World Cup with our themed World Cup activity days. Children were placed in teams to complete various footballing challenges and also competed in mini-tournaments. I am happy to say that on two separate occasions England lifted the trophy; I am hoping by the time this is published a similar photo will have hit the front pages from Moscow! If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Glebe Infant School & Picklenash Junior School. Please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - Tony Larner – Executive Head Teacher

A Future for Newent From July 12th 18th there will be an opportunity for everyone who lives and works in the parish of Newent (the area covered by the Town Council) to give their views on the proposal to make a Neighbourhood Development Plan. This is a community-led project to develop a vision and help shape the development in and for our neighbourhood. Find us at the Library or at our street stall at The Community & Wildlife Day. More details on our website. Community & Wildlife Day A Community and Wildlife Day will be held on Saturday 14th July between 10am and 3pm. The day includes face painting, local bands, historic walks, a dog show, Jo Meek memorabilia, photos of bygone Newent and free car parking at Lewall Street car park. We want it to be a day that all the family can enjoy. Any businesses or organisations that would like to be involved are asked to contact the Town Council. The summer term is proving to be a busy and exciting time for the children of Pauntley Primary School. Malvern Class had a fantastic time at the Cheltenham Science Festival in June. Some of the highlights were visiting the Cyber Zone, attending a workshop on folding viruses and making slime! The day after the festival the Year 6 pupils had a different but equally interesting experience when they took part in the Leavers’ Service at Gloucester Cathedral, along with other Year 6 children from across the county. Sport has played a big part in school life this term, as the children have taken part in swimming (including a swimming gala at Newent Community School), gymnastics, archery, mountain biking, a Soccer 7s competition and a Kwick Cricket Tournament at Newent Cricket Club. Well done to everyone who has taken part and tried their hardest in every event! This year’s residential trip took place at JCA and the children enjoyed an aerial trek, learnt to fence and took part in a mini Olympics. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all!
