BARN DANCING… BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT Now the warmer weather has finally arrived* we’ve all come out of hibernation and started searching – a bit too late really – for what we are going to do in the summer. Exercise in the fresh air feels like a pleasure rather than a chore. I’m a walker rather than a cycler, but I came across an interesting snippet recently regarding an exhibition that took place in Paris 200 years ago of the predecessor to the modern-day bicycle (see page 19). That inspired me to do our front covers this time on that theme.

What an ‘industry’ cycling is these days. It has to be one of the most inclusive sports out there with everyone from kids to grandparents and beginners to athletes being able to take part. Mind you, here in this part of the country, it’s a challenge to go any sort of distance without facing a hill.

How about dancing on a farm instead? I know that sounds strange but the fabulous Barn on the Farm festival takes place in early July, so it won’t just be you and a cow! Read founder Joshua Sanger’s inspirational story on page13. Finally, our events listings on pages 33-36 should enable you to find something to do even at short notice. We list charity or not-for-profit events free of charge so if you have anything coming up do send it in for our next issues.

Anne Golldack *I know it’s a risk celebrating the sunshine when I’m writing this a week before the magazine comes out. If it’s currently raining, I’m sorry!

Short Story

The Ice Sculpture By Jackie Brewster Mel was filling vases with peonies for the top table when a lady wearing huge sunglasses strode into to the marquee. “This all looks rather tragic,” she announced to no one in particular. Behind her, a delivery man wheeled a squeaky trolley carrying something the size of a sheep hidden beneath a white sheet. Grunting, the man lifted the heavy object onto the table reserved for wedding gifts and handed the lady a clipboard to sign. “How quaint,” she said, “in LA we’re completely digital, you never see pens and paper anywhere.” His task complete, the man scurried out of the marquee as though in a hurry to escape. “Are you here for the wedding?” Mel asked, placing the last vase in position. “You bet.” The lady removed her glasses and surveyed the marquee. “I’m Pauline, the bride’s aunt. Just flown in.” She then fixed her steely gaze upon Mel. “Is there time to do something about these sorry-looking flowers?” Mel held her tongue. She’d been up since four decorating the marquee for her friend Abbie’s big day, and had just been congratulating herself on how beautiful it looked. “This desperately needs a touch of glamour, wouldn’t you say?” Pauline said. “In Hollywood we know how to throw a wedding.” 6

“Is that where you’re from?” Mel asked, hoping to change the subject. “We moved out there six years ago,” Pauline said smugly. “Our pool is bigger than this whole tent.” “Cool.” Mel nodded, already tiring of Abbie’s boastful relative. “Make yourself useful and remove this sheet,” Pauline said, pointing at the strange object she’d just had delivered. “Be careful, what’s underneath costs more than you earn in a year.” Quietly seething, Mel gently took hold of the corners of the sheet. She could feel cold emanating from whatever was beneath it. Gently she lifted it. “Wow!” she said, standing back. “What is it?” “Botticelli’s Birth of Venus,” Pauline said curtly. “If you lived in LA, you’d know that.” To Mel it looked like a dumpy, naked lady standing on a seashell. “Is it carved out of ice?” Mel asked. “You bet,” Pauline pouted. “Remind you of anyone?” Mel peered at the sculpture’s face, which was already starting to glisten in the heat. “I’m not sure,” Mel said, though

she had her suspicions. “Is it you?” “That’s right,” Pauline purred. “It’s what we in Hollywood call a conversation piece.” “Lovely.” Mel frowned. She could imagine what kind of conversation Abbie’s wedding guests would have about it. “Won’t it melt?” she asked, noticing puddles of water already forming on the table. “Well, hurry up and turn on the air conditioning.” Pauline glanced irritably around the tent for the non-existent air conditioning unit. “Which reminds me, you need to rearrange the seating plan so that I’m closest to it.” “I’m sure Abbie will love it,” Mel said, feeling not at all sure. “Perhaps I should let her know you’re here?” She had a

sinking feeling her friend’s big day was about to become all about managing the needs of Auntie Pauline and her awful ice sculpture. “Abbie?” Pauline asked. “Who on earth’s Abbie?” “The bride,” Mel said dumbfounded. “The bride is Sara, you silly girl,” Pauline said hotly, “and she’s getting married here, today, the twenty-first of June.” The two women stared at each other. The ice sculpture slowly dripped and Mel felt a pleasant calm descend upon her. “What’s the time difference between here and LA?” she asked. “Eight hours,” Pauline said tetchily. “Why?” “You’re a day ahead of yourself.” Mel smiled politely. “Today’s the twentieth. You’ve come to the wrong wedding.”

Ultrafast full fibre broadband for rural Britain Gigaclear was founded in 2010 and is one of the fastest growing broadband suppliers in the UK. By the end of 2017, Gigaclear operated networks in rural locations across some 17 counties mainly in the South of England, with more in the pipeline. The company is dedicated to providing reliable, ultrafast, full fibre broadband directly to homes and businesses in rural Britain.

What does this mean for you? Enjoying the freedom of working flexibly, streaming seamlessly and getting the latest entertainment or box-set with the speed you need, wherever you are. We also understand that rural communities rely on high-speed broadband to thrive enabling schools, village halls, shops and surgeries to better serve the people of the community. At 1000Mbps, we offer a significantly faster service with FTTP connection than the standard copperbased ADSL connection. This is all part of our commitment to ensuring that rural communities have access to the latest and very best technology. For the residents of Appleton, a village in Oxfordshire, the choice of internet connectivity was between slow and nothing at all. Applications such as iPlayer were virtually impossible to use and downloading a one-hour programme would take all night. Appleton’s broadband connection used old-school copper wire and major network providers had no plans to upgrade it any time soon – even with 8

Government funding. Villagers got together to take matters into their own hands and researched what alternatives were available. Local resident, Julian Morris, comments: “There were a number of rural broadband initiatives out there, but they required significant time and investment from residents to run and manage the service. We needed a solution from a sound commercial organisation which we could simply subscribe and easily connect to. That’s why we chose Gigaclear. The company held an Open Day which made people realise what they’d been missing out on for years because of poor broadband. Since connecting to Gigaclear, we’ve been able to take full advantage of the Internet in a way that just wasn’t possible before. We watch TV shows using BBC iPlayer without interruption, access our daily newspapers online and most importantly have regular and reliable Skype conversations with our grandchildren. Additionally, I’m now able to work just as efficiently at home as in the office. This means that I can miss the rush hour completely and have a better work/life balance.” This is one of many comments from happy customers which have contributed to our 4-star Trust Pilot rating.

Newent British Legion inaugurate new Young Volunteer award Newent British Legion Chairman, Richard Balding, with the John Whitehorn Trophy

THE MARKET HOUSE Newent Town Council’s Newsletter Message from The Mayor - Cllr June Davies It has been a busy year as Mayor and I would like to thank my colleagues on the Town Council for their support, as well as the many lovely people I have met along the way. My last two engagements for this civic year were the Mayor of Gloucester’s Civic Service at the Cathedral and the presentation of prizes to the children at the Federation of Schools who won the Dog Fouling Poster Competition. Congratulations to everyone who took part. Annual Parish Meeting

The Newent & District Branch of the Royal British Legion has introduced a new trophy, called "The John Whitehorn Trophy”, to honour young volunteers in and around Newent. Branch Chairman Richard Balding says: “We feel that not enough is done to recognise the efforts of the young people in our area and the creation of this award will be our way of celebrating their efforts.

This year’s Parish Meeting saw a very significant increase in numbers attending on April 11th at The Memorial Hall. Service providers held stalls and talked to residents before the Mayor gave her report of the Town Council’s activities during the year. Questions followed. Councillors feel that the change of venue and format was a successful move.

Young people in our area can often be found caring for parents or siblings, volunteering after school and carrying out many other activities that are not properly recognised. The aim of this award is to find these young people so as to recognise their efforts and show how much it is appreciated.”

Clifford’s Mesne - Litter Pick

The Branch will distribute entry forms over the next few months for people to nominate someone they feel deserves the award. Nominations need to be received by 18th October 2018.

The Council has started the process to make a Neighbourhood Development Plan. More news soon of this significant project which will involve the whole community. See our website for more details.

Further details can be obtained by contacting the Secretary on newent.secretary@rbl. community or by attending the meeting at the Memorial Hall (last Thurs of every month).

FURTHER INFORMATION: Information about the Council, its activities and contact details for councillors, can be found on the website at www.newenttowncouncil.org.uk or ring 01531 820638. A fuller version of this newsletter is available on our website.

wanted to break down the walls of the venue, BARN ON THE FARM Imaking the festival more of a family in which the artist, audience, organisers and volunteers SMALLER IS are all together as one." DEFINITELY BETTER 2014 The 5th to the 8th July sees the return of Barn on the Farm at Over Farm near Gloucester. Started 9 years ago by Joshua Sanger, this wonderful independent festival has developed into a major feature on the music calendar. Joshua explains what inspired him to create Barn on the Farm, and what he hopes festival-goers will get out of the event. “I grew up in Gloucestershire, and the countryside is home to me, but music is what I lived for. At the tender age of 19, I naively decided that running a local music festival would be good idea and somehow I did pull it off. A line-up and 60 people turned up and we almost broke even. Year two and I managed to get Ed Sheeran – his first ever festival headline slot – and, with quite a bit of persuasion, Ben Howard. I'd also started trying to work out what I wanted to achieve with the festival. I'd been to a load of gigs at the time but somehow felt closer to the artists playing their music at home than seeing them live. That felt bizarre - surely you go to see a live performance to be a part of the music, part of the moment?

In 2014 we were delighted to be nominated for the Best Independent Festival award. At the awards evening, we were staggered when we heard "the winner is… Barn on the Farm!"

TODAY We’re now well known as arguably the best small festival for international artists to do special one-off performances. You start like James Bay did playing to 15 people on our third stage, you then work your way up to second stage and then you headline. Jack Garratt and Rag ’N’ Bone Man have similar Barn on the Farm stories. We encourage artists to camp, to watch each other’s sets and encourage everyone to just be who they are.

ACT NOW! Barn on the Farm has an outstanding line-up this year and still has a few tickets for Saturday and Sunday available but it’ll sell out soon. If you are reading this article it means you are local to the event – you can camp or you could probably even get a lift. Don’t miss out!

History & Technology

Cycling – without pedals 200 years ago, in the spring of 1818, German inventor Karl Drais patented and exhibited his bicycle forerunner the ‘Laufmaschine’ in France. Literally translated as ‘running machine’ it was the first means of transport to make use of the two-wheeler principle and was given the French name of draisienne. With both wheels in-line, it was propelled by the rider pushing along the ground with the feet as in regular walking or running. The front wheel and handlebar assembly was hinged to allow steering. On Karl Drais’s first reported ride from Mannheim on June 12, 1817, he covered 13 km in less than an hour. The design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America, going under the title of a dandy-horse.

Original made-to-measure draisienne

Several manufacturers in France and England made their own dandy-horses during its brief popularity in the summer of 1819 – most notably Denis Johnson of London, who used an elegantly curved wooden frame which allowed the use of larger wheels. However, its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to an increasing number of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use. That clearly wasn’t the end of the idea though, as it’s estimated there are now over 2 billion bicycles in the world.

Could you help raise a Guide Dog puppy in Gloucestershire? Guide Dogs is in urgent need of volunteers in Gloucestershire who could provide loving, temporary homes for puppies. Guide Dog pups live in volunteers’ homes for around a year, before leaving to start their formal guide dog training. During this year, volunteers help get pups used to social environments and travelling on public transport.

Volunteer Emily & Edie For more information on how you can become a Puppy Walker, please contact Volunteering Consultant Michelle Parsons on 0345 143 0194 or email michelle.parsons@guidedogs.org.uk

Newent Runners donate to Newent British Legion

Emily Williams from Cheltenham has been a volunteer Puppy Walker for four years. “I love being a Puppy Walker – to know that I have helped a pup get ready for its guide dog training is just incredible,” Emily said. The other two puppies that Emily has looked after have qualified as working guide dogs.

Newent Runners Jonathan Miles, Richard Baldry and Clive Jones with British Legion Chairman Richard Balding (centre)

“Knowing how much of a difference they have made to their owners inspires me to keep doing it.”

Newent Runners have made a very generous donation of £500 to the Royal British Legion’s GP 90 fund. As previously mentioned here the GP 90 fund was set up to help members of the local British Legion to take part in the Royal British Legion’s biggest event in its history, namely a tour of the WW1 battlefields and cemeteries in order to mark 90 years since the original Great Pilgrimage of 1928.

“I’d encourage anyone to do puppy walking for Guide Dogs, it’s the best thing ever and the pups you look after always make you smile.” Volunteers must be age 18 or over and Guide Dogs cover all feeding and veterinary costs. Staff at Guide Dogs provide regular support and guidance for Puppy Walkers. 20

Newent Runners spokesman Jonathan Miles said: ”We recognise the importance of this event to our local British Legion Branch and are honoured to be able to make this donation.” - Written by Colin Thomas

Gardening

CREATIVE CONTAINERS

By Pippa Greenwood

Colourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull backyard or a gloomy terrace or patio. Plus, wacky and more unusual planters can easily be created with a little imagination and ingenuity. Plastic flower pots can be transformed by wrapping them in hessian. Available in a range of colours from classic pale brown to reds, greens and blues, it’s weather-tolerant and tough but looks great. Plastic pots are more exciting with a bit of planting around the sides, so cut holes just over an inch in diameter at regular intervals around the sides to create a planter perfect for small bedding plants. Fill with compost to the base of the lowermost holes, add plants through the holes, add more compost to the next layer of holes and continue upwards, finishing off with plenty of colour on the top. Acrylic paints are ideal to colour a boring or discoloured container. Usea single colour to match existing garden features or the colour of your front door or window frames, or design a pattern of wild, fantastic colours for a planted-up art gallery. Mosaic tiles from your local craft or hobby store can be used to cover a 22

container, or if time is short to just make a mosaic rim. Use rich colours to make a Moroccan-style pot. Protect it when winter comes by placing it in a frostfree spot unless you use the grouting adhesive used for swimming pools to make it more weather resistant. Old tyres filled with compost make ideal planters, and can be stacked to make deeper versions. Trailing flowers – such as trailing geraniums – cascading over the edges give a really striking effect. An aged wheelbarrow is great for a larger display or permanent planting. If there are no holes in the pan of the barrow, place a layer of gravel or stones in the base so that the compost does not become waterlogged. An old wellington boot makes a stylish planter. Fill the foot and ankle area with

gravel or grit for drainage, add compost and plant up the top. Acrylic paints can jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is dry before you start planting. Old gardening, walking or work boots have planting potential too, and because they have heavier soles and are lower to the ground they are useful in a less-sheltered place. Plant up with bright bedding, or for a longterm display use a few house-leeks or sempervivums – their fleshy rosettes of leaves in shades of green and purple look great! An old kitchen or bathroom sink can be put to good use; either remove the plug to provide drainage or fix it firmly in place with sealant to make a miniature water garden.

I’ve even seen a loo cistern packed full of trailing plants including blue and white lobelia and trailing silvery foliage plants. Auction Anecdote It is, of course, always the exception that proves the rule and Smiths Auction on the 11th of May displayed a classic example of this when a pair of Victorian Staffordshire spaniels sold for a surprising £1,000. I sometimes seem to spend my valuation days chanting the same old lines relating to the poor prices achieved by antique china which in general terms is not selling very well these days. Most people no longer collect antique jugs, teapots, plates or figures etc. to adorn their shelves and dressers as fashions have changed, and everyone seems to aspire to have modern clutter-free interiors.

Victorian Staffordshire figures are a typical example of a market which was incredibly strong in the 1980’s and 90’s but which now has all but disappeared. However, as with all collecting markets, there are always a few die-hard devotees who are still seeking out the rarer items to add to their already significant collections.

also includes Silver, Jewellery, Ceramics, Glass, Furniture, Pictures & Collectables

Smiths’ sale included a pair of Victorian Staffordshire dogs which were unremarkable in every way other than that they were smoking pipes and this, of course, was what made them so desirable. The Staffordshire potters were always looking for interesting new ideas and contemporary subjects for their pottery including stories from the newspapers, politics, theatre and history. The inspiration for the smoking dogs came originally from an oil painting of a dog smoking a pipe painted by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer – typical of his anthropomorphic style for which he is so famous for.

Fully illustrated catalogues available online

On the auction day the figures were chased by a number of buyers with commission bids and online, however, they eventually sold on the telephone to a local dealer who specialises in country and rustic antiques. Smiths’ next antique sales is on the 15th June and includes a special section for clocks and watches. Entries are invited for our July sale on the 3rd, 5th & 10th of July, 10am - 3pm or by appointment. Newent’s Festival of Music and Art

Facebook page to help prevent crime

In 2018 Newent will see its first Festival of Music and Art since the presentation and performance of “The Newent Symphony".

A new Facebook page called "Newent and District Neighbourhood Watch" publishes information on crime within the Newent District and details on how to decrease your chances of becoming a victim.

The event will take place on Saturday 21st July (2-10pm) at the Shambles. Visitors can look forward to light classical live music, including pieces from local composers Bill Anderton and Martin Bills, and art and poetry presented by the Secret Gallery. The festival is free and will celebrate Newent’s creative talent with live performances, demonstrations and the Grand opening of the Newent Art Competition Exhibition which will feature entries inspired by music. There will also be a bar and Artisan Pizzas. Performances will include Carnivale Baroque and Contemporary Music as well as performances from Newent Classical Brass. There will also be the first public live performance of “Alchemy in Music” composed by Bill Anderton. Come along, enjoy the festival and help support Newent’s brilliant musical heritage.

- Written by Colin Thomas

PCSO Joshua Griffiths, of Newent Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The world of social media is a great way of getting information into the public domain. From my experience in the police, the more crime prevention advice you can pass onto the public the greater the chances of reducing that type of crime. Prevention is better than cure and if you remove the opportunities for crime and make it difficult for the criminal, you can help build a safer, stronger community.” Joshua offers thanks to the volunteers who help run the site and says "their commitment is greatly appreciated". The police team would like to ask for residents in the Newent area to ‘like’ the page and to ‘share’ the crime prevention messages across Gloucestershire.

Rotary Polio Team at Westminster Rotarian Jan Long, who lives in Bromsberrow Heath, was recently invited by MP William Wragg to the House of Commons. Jan and her Rotary colleagues were team members of the Polio Immunisation effort in India. The memorable event provided an opportunity to hear inspirational speeches by William Wragg who had been involved with Rotary since his teenage years, having been a finalist in the Rotary “Youth Speaks” competition. The Rt Hon. Penny Morduant MP on International Development matters, expressed thanks for the "amazing work being done by Rotarians

to eradicate Polio globally" and mentioned increased funding for this purpose. Jan said: "We were served with delicious refreshments at this highly enjoyable reception where the prevailing atmosphere was full of joyful acknowledgement that it is a job well worth doing."
