Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, I hope you are enjoying the Easter holidays and managing to take some time out to relax and spend time with family and friends. I’ve just attended a lovely Easter Service at my children’s school, where they performed songs that they have proudly been practicing non-stop on car journeys for the last month… ‘I’m a spring chicken, I’m yellow and small…’. I very much look forward to this being stuck in my head until rehearsals for the Christmas play start..! This won’t be a long editorial as I’m a bit behind on making preparations for the imminent arrival of the Easter Bunny – who would have been and gone by the time you read this. I’m sure that you will still have a few Easter Eggs left though, and might even be snacking on a bit of chocolate as you read this! Please make yourself a cuppa to go with that and enjoy the April issue. Don’t forget to have a look at our Events pages towards the back so that you don’t miss out on anything that is happening in your area. Best wishes,
Vicky Muller

pay 9% of everything earned above £22,000, but now repay everything above £21,000, that’s a hike.
However, the big question is ‘will the system remain unchanged?’
It’s received little publicity though, as it doesn’t immediately seem such a big problem. Here I need to declare an interest: I was head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information in 2012 when the system changed. The Government repeatedly told me the threshold would rise, and I, of course, told people, and used it in all my cost calculations.
Q. What’s this retrospective hike to student repayments?
A: Asyour I explained earlier, since t covers 2012, graduates only repay 9% of er, which what they earn over £21,000. The cluding
government had said this threshold was due to rise each year from April 2017 in line with average earnings.

is the message this sends. The Government is not just freezing it going forward, it’s freezing it for everyone who signed up since 2012 - effectively changing the contract after people have signed up. The regulator would not allow any commercial lender to change its terms this way. This could destroy any trust current and future generations can have in the student finance system, and perhaps, even more widely, in the political system as a whole. I said above that the impact of replacing grants with loans isn’t actually as bad as many think under the current terms. Yet the real concern is, as the Government has shown it’s willing to change loan terms even after you’ve got them, who knows what may happen in the future.

Clean for the Queen in Newent Last month Newent took part in the countrywide "Clean for the Queen Weekend" in preparation for Her Majesty's 90th Birthday.
Some 30 plus volunteers collected under the Market House in Newent with a view to doing their bit towards the campaign to clear up Britain before Her Majesty's Birthday. Street Wardens handed out litter pickers to the volunteers who then went in separate directions around Newent.
Councillor Sandra Marcovecchio and Councillor Colin Thomas attended alongside the volunteers and Council Employees from Newent including a large group from Steve Gooch Estate Agents led by Tom Gooch. All sorts of packaging, bottles and general rubbish was collected and placed in the waiting lorries. Newent certainly looked the better for it.
Organiser Nick Brain, Street Warden Team Leader, was helped by local Street Warden Rob Carpenter to set up the event. Nick said "It's nice to see so many people turning out. I see these type of events as bringing people together allowing them to take ownership of the problem. Some volunteers already do this type of Group of litter pickers from Steve Gooch Estate Agents

They gave their lives so that we might live in freedom. Appeal for information The Newent Local History Society, together with the British Legion and the Newent Civic Society are currently researching the lives of all those who are named on our War Memorial, there are more than 80 names and we now have a team of 8 volunteers working on the project. Whilst there is a lot of material now available on the Internet, in particular from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, it is very easy to follow the wrong person, as for example there were many people named J. Archer who served in WW1, only one of whom came from Newent. We are aware that there are still many people alive today who are descendents of those named on the Memorial, and a few who served in WW2. Page 10

Our Aim is to collect as much information about the people named on the Newent War Memorial, or anyone you think should be on it: Who were they? Where did they live? What did they do before the War? Where did they serve? How did they die? Where are they buried/what happened to their family after the War. Like many villages and towns, we hope to then produce a small book that will make such information available for the future. Some people have already kindly spoken to us, and loaned us documents and photos to enable us to make a high quality digital copy, for which we are very grateful. If you have any information about the people on our War Memorial, or have any old photos of them, or old documents that you are willing

to share with us, that would be extremely helpful. We are also aware of several anomalies, in that the names on the Roll of Honour inside the Church are not identical to the names on the War Memorial, and there were other people from Newent who served and gave their lives in WW1, and perhaps WW2, who do not appear on our War Memorial. This is a nationwide problem and the Government has recently made some money available for correcting any such errors over the next two years. If you can help in any way, and are willing to spend time talking with us, sharing your information, please can you contact Dood Pearce on 01531 821 398, Martin Brown on 01531 820 895, or the Rector Simon Mason in the Church Office on 01531 821 641 and we will then put you in contact with the person researching your name.

MR SHAMBLES’ APRIL MEWS At last! The sun has started warming up! Lots of people have been reading that I like being fussed and my fan club is increasing, with more feet down the cobbles! All the spring flowers are starting to look lovely as well. Makes Shambles Village look super colourful! So, what’s new on the cobbles? Well, The Gallery @ The Shambles opens on April 2nd to much local excitement and after sneaking in to snooze in front of the woodburner - I can tell you that the artwork is going to be absolutely stunning! The local talent is truly brilliant and you really will have to come and have a look for yourself. Mal from Survival Supplies UK is on the move again! Having outgrown his second shop in just two months he’s moving again, this time to the old Sew Sew Studio, proving that his specialist bushcraft shop is hugely popular. He’s got lots more new ranges in and has recently begun to stock a range of angling gear for the people who like to fish
Newent Lake and further afield... and he says he’ll soon be stocking maggots. But he also says that he needs the advice of local anglers as to what they’d like him to stock, so please do pop in and have a chat with him about it. He’s also changed his Monday to Friday opening hours from 9am to 5pm to 10am until 6pm for those of you who work during the day. Enchanted have been busy little bees! Hazel has organised an Enchanted Bunny Hunt around Newent (23rd March – 2nd April) and a pop up craft session for the little ones in The Shambles (April 7th). Have a look at the posters around Newent for details. I see Hazel’s also started building a “Fairy Garden” and she’s got lots of things for you to turn your own personal dreams of a Fairy Garden into reality! Go on, drop into Enchanted for a look-see. One of the sections I like the most in Gill’s Bookshop is her extensive collection of books on railways and trains; Gill has a lot of old and some very rare books there,
Forest Activities Festival Returns to Coleford The Forest Activities Festival will return to the grounds of The Speech House Hotel near Coleford on Sunday 24th April 2016 from 10am to 5pm, offering locals and tourists alike a wealth of indoor and outdoor pursuits to try. including loads and loads on steam trains and old railway lines. I even spotted one or two on model railways! I know from my extensive purr-ambulations around town that there’s a lot of train enthusiasts out there and these volumes really are packed full of nostalgia. Alexis from Zap Laser Services has a great deal for this month 20% off acne treatment during April! That’s a very generous offer, why not try out her flabuloss machine at the same time, it never fails to make people smile!
What’s more, live music from local musicians will be performed throughout the day, while gastronomes can pick at a selection of food and drink from the region’s best exhibitors. Furry friends are also welcome, with dogs on a leash allowed in the festival grounds, as well as the chance to enter into the popular fun dog show. Go On, Grow Your Own! by Pippa Greenwood
Enjoying a delicious meal which includes some home grown ingredients is a wonderful feeling – it fills you full of just the right sort of pride (and maybe even a little bit of smugness!). It simply feels good to indulge in a bit of Grow Your Own and then reap the rewards. You may well have been sowing and potting on vegetables for a while now, but if you’re behind schedule or haven’t produced vegetables before, don’t panic – there’s still time to grow just about any crop in your plot this year. Most plants can be raised from seed now, but there are a few that are likely to give a much better yield with an earlier start. Instead, buy in plants of crops such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons and aubergines over the next month or so. Some vegetables can be directly sown now into wellprepared garden soil in a suitable spot in all but the coolest gardens – beetroot, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, rocket, spinach to name but a few. Slightly more tender crops such as sweetcorn, squash and courgettes fare better if given a bit of extra heat when you are Page 14
germinating the seeds, which is where an electrically heated propagator really comes into its own. The seedlings may then need pricking out and potting on until they are sturdy enough to live in the great outdoors, but try to ‘harden off’ the young plants before placing them into their final positions as they may be damaged by cold, wind or rain. Put the young plants outside on warm days once the weather has stabilised, and bring them back under cover at night. Leave them outside after a week or so, covering them with fleece at night to let them acclimatise. To save time, you can buy in small plants and you will get a good range from seed merchants or garden centres, but if you would like advice from me to ensure great results, don’t forget that you can still order garden-ready plants, accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails specific to the vegetables you’ve chosen to grow. There are more details at www.pippagreenwood. com/grow-your-own and you can use the code 12419-E7SPS at the checkout to get £4.00 discount, whichever pack size you choose. Garden-ready plants can be planted out immediately and, provided you
follow the instructions, keep them well-watered during drier weather and apply feed at regular intervals, you will soon be harvesting crops such as climbing French and runner beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, sugar-snap peas, peppers, chillies, onions, melons, butternut squash, beetroot and courgettes. Most vegetables need a good fertile soil and a sunny or partly shaded spot, so choose your growing area with care. If space is limited, don’t worry – most vegetables will do well in good sized containers (minimum 30cm x 30cm x 30cm) with good-quality compost, though bigger pots will need less frequent watering. But, whether you plant and sow vegetables in pots, tubs, greenhouses or open ground, the end result will be gorgeous tasting, superfresh vegetables. So go on, get growing! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Auction Anecdote I was in for a few surprises at our recent sale on the 26th February not the least because the early spring is a very buoyant time of year to sell and so prices were very strong for collectables, silver and jewellery with strong selective buying in other areas such as ceramics, glass, pictures and furniture. The most surprising result of all came in the unlikely form of a ‘Nintendo Control Desk Super Mario 3’. Initially I tried to persuade the seller to take the game elsewhere telling him (with a certain amount of aplomb) that computer games were not really our sort of thing. I even tried to persuade him to sell it on ebay himself, where I assured him he would get a much better price. However he was very persistent and in the end I reluctantly agreed to take it in for auction with a reserve of £100.The game was duly given a lowly location in our back room and received scornful comments by all staff members at some point or another. The seller had explained that the game had been an unwelcome gift from his brother to his children and so had been unopened and stored in a cupboard for the last thirty years or so. And therein lay the secret of it’s extraordinary value – the cellophane wrapper was completely intact (other than a small tear on one side). Much to our amusement we were asked to email multiple images of the game from all sides in order to illustrate the condition and ‘authenticity’ of the cellophane. I began to realise this item might be more valuable than I had wanted it to be and elevated it to a better position whilst still giving out countless condition reports and arranging telephone bids with interested parties. On the day the whole saleroom was just ‘blown away’ when the lot quickly sailed up from a starting bid of £100 to sell for £1050 to one of the telephone bidders against interest in the room from a local buyer and a frenzy of bidding on the internet. As the hammer fell there was a loud buzz of conversation as the audience and staff exclaimed their surprise and amazement. Once again I had learnt a valuable lesson in the art of valuation and perhaps I might be slightly less judgemental of modern collectables in the future. Smiths next sale is on the 13th May and includes a selection of antiques and collectables as well as having a special section for silver and jewellery. Entries are invited on the 12th, 14th, 19th & 21st April 10am-3pm or by appointment. Telephone 01531 821776 or visit www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk

10 Tips for Business Success 1. Believe in your product or service: Be enthusiastic but don't be in love with it. Welcome constructive criticism particularly from customers and people with real knowledge and or experience and continue to look for improvements and development. 2. Be customer-led: Develop a customer-led culture. Base your strategy and planning on what your customers or potential customers want. Not what they need but what they want. 3. Be sales driven: Develop a sales driven culture. One of the two major causes for businesses going bust is that they don't know how to sell - they don't want to sell - or they cannot sell their product or service. Successful businesses are sales driven from the MD down with a passion. 4. Don't sell your products or services: Now that is a contradiction. What you should sell is what your product or service can do. Here lies a very big difference. People don't want your product or service; they want what it can do for them. My training company does not sell training. It sells increased sales, or increased profits, or managers that deliver, or staff that perform. 5. Get paid on time: This is the second biggest reason businesses go bust. They don't get the money in. They let their customers use their business as a lending bank. It is not difficult to operate a very strictly controlled debtors book. (For information please give us a call.) 6. Don't be the cheapest: Try not to be the cheapest. Business history has shown that the cheapest do not stay in business for long. The most successful supermarkets are not the
cheapest. The cheapest car is not the biggest selling car and so on. Sell value not price. 7. Give a money back guarantee: In business terminology this is known as risk reversal. You will take market share and increase your profits by operating a full no quibble money back guarantee. It builds confidence in your customers but also exercises an automatic product/service quality control. Every one of my books almost uniquely has a money back guarantee. 8. Share your success: Your staff will be more loyal, more committed and more productive if you share your success with those who help the business to grow. It will reduce costly staff attrition and also focus the mind of everybody when they have a chance to share in the profits. 9. Invest in your people: This is a grave error that British companies’ consistently commit. They expect their people to perform effectively in a continual pressurised competitive marketplace and yet they fail to up-skill them, to re-inspire them and to help them to acquire the tools for success. The small investment in really good training (and it must be good) will reap exponential benefits. 10. Deliver outstanding customer care: This is possibly the cheapest and easiest to do. You don't have to have the best product or service, you don't have to have the best prices but if you deliver outstanding customer care you will reap untold rewards. The judgement of customer care is what your customers say not what you believe you do.

Hartpury C of E Primary School - Art week This half term we have hosted our art week at Hartpury Primary school. The children always look forward to this and have an amazing time. It is a great opportunity to build on existing artistic skills, try something new, make something amazing and develop friendships. As a small school we have a great community ethos and this really comes to the fore during art week. The children are mixed together so that they get the opportunity to work with older and younger children. Our Year 6 buddies support their Reception peers to access all kinds of amazing opportunities and even the parents get involved. This year our theme was inspired by Tim Peake’s visit into space. The children had the opportunity to use pastels and paints to create space themed pictures, batik and stop frame animation. Furthermore, the whole school got together to build and create a 5 ½ foot astronaut who now stands proudly in our entrance hall.
a regular event at Hartpury School and one that is extremely popular. At Hartpury we are keen to involve parents in all that we do and the art evening is a great way of providing an opportunity for parents and children to come together to create something truly fantastic. The evening always starts with a hall crammed full of paints, pastels, materials, glue, glitter and all manner of other exciting art materials alongside a huge wall mural cut into sections. Eager parents work with their children to complete a section and then the next day the mural is put together to form the most amazing display. This year’s picture celebrates the famous bible story ‘Joseph and his Technicolour Dream Coat’ and looks stunning. The children have produced the most wonderful art work and are already asking about when the next art week will be!
If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Hartpury CofE Primary. Please feel free to contact the school office on: 01452 700446 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - written by Tony Larner, Head teacher
One of the highlights of art week for me, the children and the parents is our parent and child art evening. This has become

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith A-Z of Computing - A is for Antivirus Welcome to my new series on the essentials of computing, one letter at a time. Let’s start at the beginning - A is for Antivirus. To me, antivirus is as essential as having seatbelts in a car. You wouldn’t think of taking your children out for a drive without making sure their seatbelts are on - just in case the worst happens - well the internet is full of things that can make the worst happen! What is the worst, you may ask? Viruses are typically designed to destroy, or steal data - it could be permanently deleted, given to third parties, and/or your PC made unusable. They are also designed to spread themselves, via files or e-mail, potentially infecting your contacts. There are three main ways your PC could contract a virus or malware from the internet, via an e-mail, or via shared media (USB stick, CD, memory card, or from another PC on your home or business network). I’ll use the term virus in this article, but this covers a number of nasty things such as trojans, worms, keyloggers and other malware. Good antivirus software will check these three sources by scanning downloaded files, incoming e-mails, and any media you plug into your PC, plus regularly scanning your computer for infected files. New viruses are created every day, which is why your antivirus updates itself so often, with new virus definitions from its parent company. It used to be the case that if you had an Apple Mac, Linux system, or anything other than a Windows PC, you were relatively safe from viruses as they just weren’t written for these systems. Unfortunately they are all now susceptible - and even tablets and mobile phones can contract viruses. So what should you look for in a good antivirus? Detection rates - it’s no good if it misses a virus! Scanning options - not just your hard disk files, but disk boot sectors, e-mails, and also the ability to recover files once infected. Usability - it might be great software but it’s no good if it’s hard to set up or slows your PC down. Norton was once the market leader in antivirus, but now has a reputation among IT pros for monopolising your PC’s resources and slowing your system down. Online reviews are often a good place to start your search, as is asking your local, friendly IT support! The website av-test.org offers independent industry reviews of software from home and business perspectives, and tests them on a variety of systems. We are currently recommending BitDefender - it’s reasonably priced but effective, and doesn’t slow down performance.
If you suspect you have a virus, would like a free chat about antivirus software, or have queries on anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk.

A treat for Music Lovers Music lovers have a treat in store at Newent when some of the world’s bestloved operatic choruses will be performed at a special concert. Members of Newent Choral Society have been rehearsing since Christmas for the concert on April 9th which will have the added benefit of one of the country’s leading opera experts as a guide to the magnificent and memorable choruses in the programme. Radio Three presenter Chris De Souza, a former BBC Proms producer, will introduce each item in his famous, easy-going style. The rousing Anvil Chorus, from Verdi’s Aida, will be performed – complete with anvil – and the audience themselves will be invited to join in when the choir sings the Triumphal Scene from the same work. The Humming Chorus from Puccini’s Madam Butterfly, Brindisi from La Traviata, the haunting Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves from
Verdi’s Nabucco and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances will also have listeners humming along to their familiar strains. Wagner’s Bridal Chorus, from Lohengrin, Chorus of the Wedding Guests by Donizetti and the dramatic Pilgrims’ Chorus from Tannhauser are also included. The concert will come to an end with the choral society members own favourite, the timely and unforgettable Easter Hymn from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. Musical director Ian Fox will conduct the performance accompanied by the society’s superb pianist Giles Turner. Society chairman Peter Coulson said: “This will be a fun evening for both choir and audience, with some well-loved choruses and an opera expert to guide us though.” Tickets for the concert, at Newent School Hall, at 7.30pm on Saturday 9th April, are available from Angela Jones (Tel 01531 820205) or from any Newent Choral Society member.

Home & Interiors Planning A Master Bedroom
Your bedroom is a highly personal space, but if you are considering selling, or want to enhance your property value long term, you’ll need to design it so it has general appeal, says Katherine Sorrell. Your first consideration when planning a master bedroom is comfort. Zone the space according to use – sleeping, dressing, exercising, checking your laptop, reading – perhaps drawing a scaled plan of the room to help with layout. It’s nice to have your bedhead opposite the window, for example, with a bedside table each side, but allow at least 450mm of space around the bed to give you enough room. Include plenty of storage: a wall of fitted wardrobes is a great option, and you can add freestanding pieces such as chests of drawers and blanket boxes for character and flexibility. It may also be possible to create a separate dressing area, using a tall bedhead, a bookcase or Page 28
wide wardrobe as a partition. Although watching TV is not necessarily conducive to a good night’s sleep, it is still a lovely idea to include one in the bedroom – it’s ideal for a Sunday lie-in. Fitted furniture manufacturers can provide cupboards from which TVs pop up or slide out, while music specialists offer all sorts of speakers and sound systems. You will probably also want a place for a landline phone, a small desk for your computer, ereader or tablet, and somewhere to plug in a phone charger. Even in a bedroom, you can’t have too many plug sockets. Wall-to-wall carpet, especially pure new wool, is a good idea for a master bedroom but choose a high quality underlay for bounce and softness. Alternatively, combine underfloor heating with engineered wooden boards and rugs for a traditional look with character – and still enjoy warmth underfoot. The latter option also saves the space that the radiator would have taken up. Well-designed lighting is an asset in the master bedroom and though a central pendant is fine for general, overhead light, add wall-mounted reading lights beside the bed, a bright, adjustable light above your dressing table and perhaps

a table lamp or two to create a gentle glow, thus providing pleasing ambience and flexibility. For restful darkness for sleeping, ensure curtains have a blackout lining, or choose well-fitting shutters – which will block out noise, too. It is important to get the combination of bed linen and window treatments right - when the bed is plain, some pattern at the window is lovely, and vice versa – simply avoid two patterns that clash. Plain curtains can look beautiful if made from a generous amount of fabric, hung from a pole with pretty finials at the ends, and finished with an edging of ruffles or a contrast border. If privacy is a problem, consider adding sheer or lace curtains. An en-suite - virtually a necessity nowadays - will make your home more saleable and may add value. A walk-in wardrobe could be converted to an en-suite (though a proper bath will need more room), or knock through and steal space from an adjacent room. Compact fittings can be effective in a tight space, but must be practical for regular use. Remember, the least expensive place to install an en-suite bathroom is close to other plumbing, particularly the soil pipe. And, because the room leads directly off the bedroom, install low-noise sanitaryware, dimmable lights and a highpowered extractor fan controlled separately from the light. Image - Soft carpet, sumptuous curtains and a deeply buttoned headboard all add up to a sense of luxury. Huntington bed, £1,175, Sweetpea & Willow, tel 0345 257 2627; www.sweetpeaandwillow.com.

Craig's Comment News and information often spreads quickly from person to person, and from town to town. While some news may well travel much faster than people expect it to, other types of information and news can never travel fast enough via word of mouth alone. When a child or young person goes missing it can often take several hours for this news to make headlines locally, while it can often take days for this to hit national headlines if at all. However, as technology continued to progress so does our ability to help make sure people are kept safe. The Child Rescue Alert is just one piece of technology that is already helping save lives however it can do so much more than it already is. All this would take is two minutes from each Forest resident. Backed by the charity Missing People as well as Google, Royal Mail, Twitter, and Facebook, it is a simple application available for download
on all smart phones. The result is that residents in an area will receive an update when a child or young person is reported as going missing.
the Europe-wide Amber Alert system, information really can be shared as widely as needed for each missing person case.
The impact of this could be huge. With the information in hand any resident would be able to know immediately if they should be on the look-out for anyone in their area. Furthermore simply being aware of any strange activity could be useful with this information in hand.
Some people do not have access to the internet while others do not regularly use a mobile phone. However if every person in the Forest who can sign up to the Child Rescue Alert does sign up, it would go a long way to cutting the time that those remaining people have to wait to find out via word of mouth.
No longer would people need to wait until the six o’clock news to hear that a vulnerable person is missing. Sometimes this news can get to people eight hours after the person first went missing. That extra time could be vital in helping save lives.
And that could itself go a long way to saving people’s lives.
Hundreds of thousands of people have already signed up across the UK and, as Child Rescue Alert is part of

New poetry events for Newent Newent will host the first of their poetry events in April. On Thursday the 7th April a poetry workshop will take place at the George Hotel from 10am to 12 noon. The workshop will be organised by Newent's own Samantha Samms, a performance poet who has been wowing audiences around the country with her unique style.
Samantha Samms
Samantha says "I am passionate about poetry and the purpose of my first workshop is to introduce people to this fantastic art form. I find in talking to people that they would love to have a go at this and this introduction is in a non-scary, informal environment and will
introduce them to the creative process and support them in writing their own poetry to take away. If you take a look at my Facebook page (Samantha Samms - comedian and poet) you will find more information and how to book into the workshop. Also, an exciting new "Poetry and Tapas Event" at the George Hotel is due to be announced in the near future so watch this space" Some recent reviews show how well Samantha is being received:
'An intelligent woman's performance poetry' - Roger Turner, Chairman Cheltenham Poetry Society.
'Poetry with attitude and lyrical stories of substance' - Lizzy Worgan, West Sussex.
If you are interested in the workshops or need any other information please contact Samantha on the Facebook address above or on 07443 381360, or email her on SamanthaSamms@outlook.com - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Odd Job Week To Return Spring 2016 The juniors had an important safety visit from the RNLI. We may be in a landlocked county, but the RNLI’s Fraser Gunn, taught pupils about their work and safety on our coasts and beaches. The children enjoyed taking part in some class room rescues.
Successes - Pauntley School Indoor Football Team secured a fourth place in their recent competition. Well done to the Wildlife Quiz team for winning their first round match. The Junior class have an amazing opportunity working with the Carducci String Quartet and musician Dave Ayre, in the “Music in Landscape Project,” to develop music based on the Dymock Poets. They are taking part in workshops this term, during which they sing, help to write a song and create a final performance piece. They will then take part in the Carducci Festival at Highnam Church on 13 May. The whole school enjoyed a visit to the co-op in Newent to learn about Fairtrade fortnight and the products being sold that help the farmers in developing countries. They were most shocked to learn that a banana farmer only gets 3p for each banana sold! Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. If you would like to visit our school in action, you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward at Pauntley School Office: 01531 820053. admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk www.pauntleyschool.com
Fair Shares to bring back event that had the Newent community pulling together. Between the 4th and 8th April Fair Shares is going to run another week long odd job campaign after its successful launch last year. The idea of the week is to offer the skills and services of Fair Shares participants, to not only its members, but also to those in need within the local community. Last year we undertook jobs such as painting, sewing, removing garden waste, tip runs and furniture removal. We also arranged a fantastic work party who, between them, completely transformed the front and back garden of a participant’s home which was previously very overgrown. The response was so fantastic that we actually extended the week and continued exchanges well into the summer. We are aiming to make this year's event even better and reach more members of the Newent community. Given the success of last year we intend to have a more strategic approach and would like to hear from anyone that would like be involved either as a volunteer or as a recipient of an odd job. Please spread the word and if anybody needs more information ask them to call David on 07887 511738.

Pork Jambalaya Ready in 55 minutes
Serves 4
Cooked in just one pan and on the table in less than an hour this is a great midweek family supper. Serve with garlic bread or a mixed green salad, if liked.
Ingredients: • 1 tbsp groundnut oil • 100g chorizo sausage, sliced • 350g pork loin steaks, cut into chunks • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 3 celery stalks, trimmed and chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 2 tsp smoked paprika, plus extra for sprinkling • 2 tsp Cajun seasoning • 225g easy-cook long grain rice • 700ml vegetable stock • 100g fine green beans, chopped • 1 large yellow pepper, deseeded and diced
TIP
You can replace the pork in this recipe with diced chicken breast fillet or boneless thigh fillets. Alternatively use large raw king prawns and add them to the pan in step 4 and cook until pink. Page 38
Heat 1 tsp of the oil in a large deep frying pan and fry the chorizo over a high heat until golden and the fat starts to run. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Add the diced pork to the pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time until browned. Remove and set aside with the chorizo. Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onion, celery and garlic for 5 minutes until beginning to soften. Stir in the spices and rice and cook, stirring, over a medium heat for 2 minutes then pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return the pork to the pan and cover and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the chorizo, green beans and yellow pepper into the pan and cook, uncovered, for a further 6-7 minutes until the rice and vegetables are tender, adding a little more stock if necessary. Serve sprinkled with a little more smoked paprika and freshly ground black pepper.

Health
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Sugar: Not So Sweet and Innocent osteoarthritis, depression, respiratory problems, sleep apnoea, infertility problems, breast cancer and bowel cancer.
Recently, evidence of sugar’s evils and a potential sugar tax have dominated the media. The Chief Executive of the NHS has even proposed a 20% NHS ‘sugar tax’ on food in England’s NHS cafes. So why is sugar nutrition’s new super-villain? Storing Sugar aS Fat Sugar’s most obvious risks are obesity, which costs the NHS around £6.4bn per year, and tooth decay. What’s less obvious is that when we don’t burn off the sugar we consume our bodies convert it to fat, storing it partly in the liver, which can lead to fatty liver disease, and partly in our fatty tissues. A study of the development of visceral fat - the dangerous, hard-to-shift fat that’s stored around the internal organs - showed that while it increased in all participants, it increased most in people consuming sugar-sweetened drinks on a daily basis. High sugar intake, hand-in-hand with obesity, can also increase our risk of hypertension (high blood pressure), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gout,
Sugary foods can make our blood sugar levels seesaw too, making us irritable and tired when we come ‘down’. However, experts are divided about whether a high sugar diet makes us prone to thrush, although diabetics are at higher risk and there’s anecdotal evidence of low sugar diets helping with recurring thrush. Sugar by any other name... iS Still aS Sweet Your latest grocery purchase may not say it contains ‘sugar’, but glucose, dextrose, maltose, fructose (found in fruit) and lactose (found in cow’s milk) are all different forms of sugar, as is sucrose (our everyday sugar). Honey, molasses, syrup and fruit juice concentrate are often included in supposedly healthy foods, but they all contain sugars too. Beware. Hear ‘sugary foods’ and you probably think of fizzy or fruit drinks, sweetened coffees, biscuits, cakes and chocolate. But check the ingredients of ketchup, pickle, salad cream, barbecue sauce, bottled cooking sauces or shop-bought soup, curry, pizza, savoury foods and low fat ‘healthy’ options - many use large quantities of sugar to improve their taste.
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.
how much iS too much? Intrinsic sugars (those naturally occurring in milk or whole fruit) aren’t related to adverse health effects. However, free sugars - those added to foods or naturally present in fruit juices, honey and syrup – are, and the World Health Organisation has advised us to reduce intake of free sugars to 10% of our daily calories, and down to 5% for further health benefits. The UK Government has now recommended this 5% limit. 5% of our calorie intake is equivalent to around 2530g of sugar (around seven teaspoons). Had a can of standard Coke today, or five Jaffa Cakes? You’ve exceeded your daily sugar allowance. The allowance for children aged 4-6 is 19g a day and for 7-10 year olds, 24g. Yet a standard 200ml Capri Sun contains 20g of sugar. Sugar SwapS and dropS • Swap cereals with added sugar or honey for unsweetened cereals with fruit. • Swap sugary desserts for fruit, plain yogurts or homemade milk puddings. • Ensure sweet treats deliver nutrition too - choose malt loaf over doughnuts. • Exchange fizzy drinks for sparkling water mixed with a no-added-sugar squash. • Gradually wean yourself off sugar added in hot drinks, cooking and baking. Drastically reducing your sugar intake is tough, so start small and let your body (and taste buds) acclimatise. Page 43

The George Hotel's New Chef Newent's George Hotel, a former coach house, now boasts a new chef, Shane Thomas, professionally known as 'Shaun the Chef'.
Shaun, originally from Warminster, has spent most of his life in catering. From school he started out in High Wycombe as a part-time washer-upper and waiter in the George and Dragon working for Phil and Caroline Todd. At the same time Shaun busy in the kitchen he attended Slough University gaining his qualifications in due course to work full-time as a cook. When the George and Dragon was sold he moved to Egypt for a few years eventually returning to the Yew Tree in Cliffords Mesne amazingly working again for the Todds. Eventually when the Todds again sold up Shaun felt a move would enhance his cooking so he came to the George Hotel in Newent. Shaun says "In my 30 years of cooking experience I like to create new and different dishes for my customers and to do this in a warm, relaxing family atmosphere such as the
George Hotel. I always had this in the pubs I worked in before. With the influence and mentoring of Phillip Todd and freelance chef Penny Hutchins I learned that the best food to serve is home-made food. I cook everything from scratch so that I First group of the evening then know exactly what is in each meal. I pride myself in quality not quantity and love to introduce my customers to a variation of foods to take them away from the usual pub experience" Shaun also specialises in making his own bread, fresh every day when the restaurant is open, which has already been complimented on Trip Advisor in the past. His signature dishes are curries and puddings, also of course, home-made. The restaurant is open on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime however this may be extended as time goes by. Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
The cleverest inventions often fail at what they’re intended to do but then go on to succeed brilliantly elsewhere. I could write a list, but seeing that 6th April 1966 is perhaps the most significant date in its history, let’s focus on one outstanding example: the hovercraft. We tend to think of the hovercraft as a product of our own age, and indeed it is; but the advantages of minimizing or even eliminating contact between hull and water have long been obvious. The first patent in hovercraft design was taken out by John Thornycroft (as in Vosper Thornycroft) way back in 1877 - but his was the age of steam, and no suitable engine existed. Once petrol engines were available, designers became interested in contactless or reduced-contact motorboats again - but now their inspiration was aviation technology, and between 1915 and 1940 prototypes of various steppedhull and hydroplane coastal craft were built in Austro-Hungary, Finland, the USSR, the USA amongst others. World War II put a stop to these developments, but in the 1950s a Norfolk boatbuilder, Christopher Cockerell, decided to revisit Thorneycroft’s patent. Light but powerful engines were plentiful, and Cockerell was also able to design a way of swirling the air cushion on which his Page 46
hovercraft would ride that made it more efficient still. At last, a craft that would rise clear out of the water! Cockerell’s design won the support of the National Research Development Council, which licensed his 1955 patent to a number of builders including Saunders-Roe; and on 11th June 1959 the four-seater 28mph SR-N1 (Saunders Roe Nautical 1) was launched. The craft was then shipped to Calais and on 25th July made the first Channel crossing by hovercraft. It wasn’t the first into service, though – that honour went to the rival Vickers-Armstrong 3, which started a scheduled ferry service across the Dee between Rhyl and Wallasey in July and August 1962. The second, launched in the same year, used a new Saunders-Roe hovercraft, SRN2, to cross the Solent between Ryde and Southsea – a service that still runs today, albeit with rather more modern craft! But the Channel was the challenge, both technically and commercially. It was open sea, the weather could be rough, and hovercraft had not so far proved themselves terribly robust (the VA-3’s career was ended by a storm). But the potential pickings were rich: international travel was becoming more affordable and more popular, and Dover and Folkestone were at full stretch. So, on that April day 50 years ago, the 38-seater SR-N6 raised itself up on its rubber skirt (an improvement designed not by Cockerell but by a naval officer called LatimerNeedham), trundled down the Ramsgate beach that would be the service’s home for the next 16 years, and set off on
the 40-minute, 35-mile journey to Calais. Connecting coaches would take passengers on to Paris for £3.7s.6d or Brussels for £2.7s.6d. Cheaper and faster they might be, but cross-Channel hovercraft never really challenged the ferry’s supremacy. Like the British airliners, the Trident and the VC-10, there wasn’t enough demand for them to justify a permanent production line: the later models even had to cannibalise each other for spare parts. The oil crisis of the early ‘70s made them less competitive; the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 proved a fatal blow. The last two were retired in September 2000, just a year after the death of their inventor. Hovercraft are, of course, still in use around the world as coastal search and rescue vessels, as military transport and assault craft, as buses using frozen Alaskan rivers in winter, although they’ve never eclipsed conventional vessels as was once hoped. But the field in which they have proved most successful is one that Cockerell probably never expected: gardening. For in 1964 a Swedish engineer, Karl Dahlman, saw an early hovercraft in action...and invented the Flymo.

If so, let me take the stress away and become your independent personal travel advisor. I am happy to visit you in your own home, at any time that suits you! I live near the Royal Forest of Dean on the borders of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire and was bitten by the travel bug, at the age of 16, when I first visited the beautiful Greek islands. I have been travelling to different parts of the world ever since. I spent a year travelling around Australia, New Zealand and Asia, have cruised most of Europe, skied in the Alps, been on Safari to Kenya and have travelled across the USA and Canada. My greatest passion is cruising, with my wife Sarah and our two energetic teenage children. We have visited Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia and many more. I offer a complete service to suit you. April Activities at Sheppard House Shepphard House has been busy as usual. With several national dates March was a hectic month altogether. Now that we have all had an Easter break we will be focusing on several projects mainly to do with the Queen's 90th Birthday. The clients will be undertaking five different topics to do with the Queen's Reign which will all be displayed on the day of our tea party in July. The clients have a great deal of social history about the Queens Reign stored in their memories and we are going to tap into this as a great Reminiscence activity. Alongside all things Royal we will also be having a couple of afternoons on Madera and Switzerland, dreaming of far off places. The usual activities will be fitted in and around the above. Max our Tai Chi Man will be back from his extended holiday in New Zealand to start getting us all chilled out once again.

Bullar Tree Kennels and Cattery is a small, family run business located in a rural setting in the village of Upleadon, a couple of miles from the town of Newent. It is owned and run by Corrina and Chris Ferns, ably assisted by their kennel hand, Emily, who pride themselves on the individual care they provide for your pet. They took over the business in November 2014, having previously lived in Cheltenham. Whilst the kennels are in very good condition, there is undoubtedly always work to be done to maintain the building, and some updating and refurbishment has already been undertaken, with more planned. For example, an all-weather exercise area is being constructed and will be available by Autumn 2016. A new cattery is currently also under construction

Bring forth the May flowers...
It’s coming up to the Wedding Season and that means ‘busy, busy, busy’ for cake makers and decorators. I’m getting busy with my Vintage Afternoon Tea Parties - most of them are Hens, but some birthdays are getting in as well. These tea parties are a pleasure to host and enjoyable to set up. Delicate bone China cups to sip specialist teas from; dainty crustless finger sandwiches and to follow traditional cakes like lemon drizzled ginger cake, fruit tea cake or chocolate cake, to name a few. And scones of course! How you eat yours is down to personal preference - jam or cream first?
tulips, etc. and there are so many colours to use, from pastels to rich reds and purples.
I don’t have an alcohol license but guests are welcome to bring their own, should they want to celebrate in style. Crystal glasses are supplied.
I enjoy making colourful floral cake decorations for birthday cupcakes at this time of year pretty spring flowers like pansies, daffodils,
On a completely different topic...my cats - I have four and three of them occasionally get on OK but all four can never harmoniously live together. It is entertaining at times but the fourth cat doesn’t find being followed by two kittens much fun. She rather goes and finds a place to rest and hide - what a little Diva! Does Your Pet Have An Allergy? It’s not just unwanted visitors that make your pet scratch. Allergies are common in most domestic pets, and scratching is just one sign that something’s not right. You might notice a loss of fur if your dog has dermatitis, and is constantly scratching to relieve the itch. Potential triggers include new shampoos, a different type of food, or a seasonal allergy, as these affect animals just as much as humans.
Page 50
PETS
General signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction Here are one or two signs to look out for so you can treat your pet as quickly as possible: • Cats: lesions, lumps and bumps on their skin – these are often felt rather than seen, and may be accompanied by bald patches around the base of the tail or underside of the body. • Dogs: frequently shaking its head – look for signs of redness in the ears, as it could be the start of an allergen-based infection. • Rabbits: flaky skin or soreness in the ears can be caused by an allergy to mites.
Bee stings are particularly dangerous A puppy’s natural inquisitive and playful nature invariably leads it into dangerous situations, but if it chews or swallows a bee, the resulting reaction can be severe. It could cause their face to swell, with breathing problems developing from a narrowed airway, and you’ll need to get emergency help from your vet in such cases. They may prescribe an EpiPen so you’re prepared if it happens again.

Spring is finally in the air Our dogs and cats are starting to enjoy themselves out and about now the daffodils are up! Whilst fleas are a problem all the year around, ticks tend to be a problem in the spring and summer time.
can sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme disease.
Ticks can be especially prevalent in the Malvern and Eastnor areas due to the rough foliage and bracken. However, they are just as likely to be found in your back garden! Various preventions are available against ticks. Some of the older preparations have been quite poor in efficacy. We do however have quite an effective collar against ticks, as well as new effective spoton preparations. We are offering large discounts for these treatments over the next 2-3 months. Please contact us for advice or preordering, and be tick free!
Ticks are very prevalent; we had one dog this week which we treated for ticks and 135 ticks dropped off this one dog! Some of the older preparations have been quite poor. We do have quite an effective collar available called “Seresto which last for 7 months, and is extremely effective in preventing ticks. There are also some effective spot on preparations, and there has just recently been launched a tablet which will prevent fleas and ticks for up to 3 months. Please contact us for advice as it is difficult to know which product to use for different animals, as not one product does every single parasite and what kills ticks might not necessary kill mites and worms etc.
Ticks are free living parasites which recognise a warm blooded animal and jump onto it, they then latch on and suck their blood. They can cause irritations and localised infections, and they
Microchipping is also a big importance this month due to the law being enforced on 6th April for all dogs in the UK to be microchipped
and we are still offering 20% off for all customers. It is important your correct contact details are updated with the chipping database, in case your pet does go missing. You can pop into the surgery to check if your dog is microchipped and then call the appropriate company to check your details are up to date.

Lifa Oakley on Giant Jumble Sales and other fundraising activities for Muscular Dystrophy UK For the past 25 years, our Giant Jumble Sales, which are held twice a year at May Hill Village Hall, have raised a staggering £40,375 for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Muscular dystrophy is a condition marked by progressive weakening and wasting of all the muscles in the body. There is currently no cure for this disease, so the money we raise goes towards both groundbreaking research and providing services and opportunities that enable people to live as independently as possible. On the day of the Sale, punters from all over the area form an orderly queue to gain access to a treasure trove, where there is something for everyone. We offer a truly eclectic mix of goods which have kindly been donated by local people. You name it, we’ve probably got it: clothes for all ages, toys, shoes, books, bric-a-brac. Our stalwart band of volunteers, some of whom have been with us from the very beginning, also serve tea and homemade cakes. Our two sales this year are on Saturday 23rd April 2016 at 2pm and Saturday 15th October 2016 at 2pm, so why not come along and bag a bargain? Page 58
This year also sees the 40th anniversary of the Royal Forest of Dean branch of Muscular Dystrophy UK. Every year we put on a number of fundraising events, from barn dances and art exhibitions to coffee mornings and car boot sales and over the past forty years we have raised an incredible £377,887.00. Due to the kindness and generosity of our numerous supporters we have been able to raise a sum of money that will make a significant difference to the lives of those with muscular dystrophy. It’s been hard work but we have had a lot of fun and laughter along the way. One of the highlights of the year is our annual Spirit of Christmas candlelit carol service in Gloucester Cathedral. This year it will be held on Wednesday, 30th November, starting at 7.30pm. Finally, I’d like to say a huge thankyou to all those who have donated their time and money to help those with muscular dystrophy. It is always a team effort and for a branch with only 10 members, I think this is a huge achievement.

Don’t be Taken In By The Pension Scammers
Since new pension regulations were introduced in 2015, conmen have been using the new freedoms to target people approaching retirement. One of the scams involves telling those under the age of 55 that a ‘legal loophole’ allows them access to their full pension, with no requirement to pay tax on the money withdrawn (in reality, a rate of up to 55%). Pension monies are then moved into an alternative scheme run by the fraudsters, with savings either being stolen or severely diminished after extortionate charges are made for the ‘service’. To make matters worse, HM Revenue and Customs has been sending out bills to reclaim tax on the amounts withdrawn, leaving victims of the scam with no pension savings and in large-scale debt in some cases. How can tHe conmen operate so effectively? Although younger people are a clear target for pension scammers, those aged 55 and over are also under threat. With no restrictions on how pension savings can be used, unscrupulous individuals and criminal groups are taking advantage of a lack of regulation within the industry, Page 60
plus an uncertainty about how best to invest such a large amount of money. Inefficient systems also form part of the problem, enabling conmen to set up these rogue pension schemes. HM Revenue and Customs are not pension regulators, but having introduced a ‘fit and proper person’ test in 2014, they have at least attempted to control the potential for fraudulent activity. HMRC has the power to deregister or refuse to register a new pension scheme, but some have said they should take more responsibility for what is happening to victims, rather than chasing them for tax payments. project Bloom taskforce A new taskforce has been set up by the government and the National Crime Agency to combat the problem of pension fraud. A ‘perfect storm’ of new pension regulations, lack of awareness about where to reinvest, and the fact that large sums of money are involved, has enabled scammers to get away with too many sophisticated cons. It’s hoped that Project Bloom will bring awareness to the issue, however, and specific advice is offered to anyone concerned about their pension. You need to be wary of: • Anyone offering a ‘free pension review’ or access to your pension pot if you’re under the age of fifty-five • Offers of help to obtain a pension statement, or to provide a tracing service for lost pensions The Pensions Advisory Service
provides free advice if you’re worried about potential scams, or to discuss your pension options in general. a sopHisticated approacH One of the problems is that scammers set up sophisticated systems and procedures that include glossy brochures and polished, well-rehearsed speeches. This makes the entire con appear legitimate unless you’re aware that this type of fraud is taking place. Bringing awareness of what’s happening is key to combating crimes like this, and hopefully Project Bloom will help to prevent more people suffering the devastating loss of their retirement income. watcH out for fake weBsites Fraudsters are even setting up fake websites with names very similar to legitimate bodies offering free advice. They may be able to gain access to your personal information in this way, and then contact you directly via phone or email. It pays to check the web address you’re typing in very carefully, to ensure that the site is legitimate and not part of the fraudsters’ arsenal of tricks. http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/ money/investing-pensions/ pension-liberation-scamvictims-facing-huge-tax-bills11364036908047 http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/pensions/article-3419232/ Should-pension-scam-victims-lettax-bills.html http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/pensions/article-3397828/ Three-tell-tale-signs-dupedpension-fraudsters.html

Rotary Campaign to Eliminate Polio around the World boosted by our Rotary District 1100 Clubs £15,000 donation
The dusty scrubland of Africa may seem a long way from the green fields and orchards of Newent and West Gloucestershire, but they now have one thing in common. Thankfully, both are free of the crippling disease of polio, and your local Newent & District Rotary Club has played its part in eradicating this terrible disease. We are proud of what has been achieved and can have realistic hope that our children and grand children will never see an iron lung. As recently as 1988 Polio was paralysing nearly 1000 children everyday around the world, but thanks to the partnership between Rotary International and the World Health Organisation it has now been eradicated in all but two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where progress is hindered by war and political instability, but even in these two countries the fight goes on to eliminate polio.
Recently when Ebola struck West Africa, the quick response by Nigeria has been recognised as one of the most effective of any country in the world. That success owes a lot to the experiences gained and the infrastructure created when the country was tackling polio. For over thirty years now Rotary members from all over the world have led the way by raising funds, advocating for government support, building awareness, and mobilising volunteers on the ground for the massive immunisation campaigns. Indeed, many Rotarians have visited previously affected countries and actually helped with the immunisation programmes. Rotary calls its important programme ‘Polio Plus’ and that reminds us that the battle is not over. Immunisation on a
very large scale must continue to prevent any further outbreak. With all this in mind, our Newent Club continues its efforts to assist, and so together with the other District 1100 Rotary Clubs, have this month approved a £15,000 donation from District funds to PolioPlus. In addition, our Rotary donation will be matched ‘3-fold’ by the generosity of Microsoft boss, Bill Gates, who for many years has kindly ‘fund matched’ all of Rotary’s donations. So yet again, your local Newent Rotary Club is ‘punching way above its weight’, with its donations exceeding its target. Newent may well be a small cog in the world wide Rotary organisation, but both locally and globally we can achieve great things, and maybe you would like to help us to continue to do this? If you would like to join us in our fund raising efforts, and would like to make new friends, have fun, and enjoy serving the community, then please contact our secretary. Thank you. Telephone: 07794 644 380 E-mail: rochehighnam@btinternet.com Our Rotary motto ‘Service above Self’
The latest victory comes in Africa which has just been declared ‘polio free’ after a year without a reported case. Therefore, if there are no new cases, the World Health Organisation can certify Africa as polio-free in 2017. Page 68
