Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Can you believe we are in August already! I’m really not sure where this year has gone and 2016 has certainly been interesting thus far. I hope you are enjoying the summer holidays and the long break isn’t proving to be too much of a strain on you or your purse if you are a parent! The summer holidays can be a worrying time for some parents, whether it’s trying to find childcare, thinking of things to do to keep the children entertained or just being mum’s taxi. Why not take a look in our useful What’s On section in the back of the magazine for some really great ideas on places to take the children or indeed the whole family. The Ross Town Band will be performing on Sunday 14th August at the Newent Park and Lake. Grab a chair or picnic blanket and make yourself comfortable for an afternoon of music and refreshments. Also, the Tadstock Music Festival takes place this month from Friday 26th until Monday 29th August. This is a must for the diary with non-stop fun and something to entertain everyone. This four-day event will keep everyone happy no matter what the age. To purchase your tickets visit www.tadstock.co.uk. Finally, now that Euro 2016 and Wimbledon has finished, take some time to relax in the garden with a nice cup of tea and read through the August edition of the magazine, because before you know it the school runs will be starting all over again! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for securing that dream job Securing that really good job does require some effort and preparation. Experiencing job satisfaction and looking forward to going to work are, of course, things most of us aspire to and yes, they can be achieved. If we are fortunate we spend one third or our life at work, so it really is important to get a job that is fulfilling. Fascinatingly, if we are happy at work we are far more likely to be happy in our home and private life too and that again, if we are fortunate, takes up another third of our life. These are a few tips to help with the interview. There is, of course, a lot of other preparation necessary in order to get the interview, but that is a different subject matter. The interview is very important as you want to show your best qualities and attributes to the interviewer and convey the belief, confidence and trust that you could do the job they are hoping to fill. From your point of view, you hope that the interviewer will be trained and skilled in how to interview as, no doubt, you have experienced the frustration of being interviewed by somebody who has not been trained and really doesn’t know what they are doing, at some point in your life. 1. Prepare a professional and honest CV – if you lie, you will be found out...eventually. Do get some help and advice from a professional in the construction of the CV. Most schools, colleges and universities are pretty useless and it’s often best not to take their advice. 2. Gen up on the employer prior to the interview. This is so easy to do via their website and more importantly it will be expected of you to have done your research. 3. Prepare and write your questions to ask at the interview. It is perfectly acceptable for you to refer to your prepared questions on a piece of paper or notebook. This demonstrates that you have made an effort, as well as showing your organisational skills. 4. It is important to sell yourself. This is not done by talking about yourself, selling yourself is done by showing interest in the other person and the business that you are hoping to join. You can ask questions such as ‘How long have you been here?’, 'What do you like about the organisation?’, 'Why is there a vacancy?’, etc. 5. Talk about what you can do for them rather

than what they can do for you. Your mindset should be what contribution can you make/ what can you add to the company. Just remember life is not about taking, a successful and happy life is about giving in all its various forms. 6. Dress for the job you want. People say 'don’t judge a book by its cover’, but that is not what happens in reality. Their first impression will be of what they see when you walk into the room. What you wear in your personal or private life is entirely up to you. But you have no right to superimpose that on your place of work where other people’s income can also be dependent on what you look like. 7. Find out about training and personal development opportunities. Not only will this be helpful for your own personal career, but also demonstrates your willingness to learn which again will benefit your employer. 8. Make sure you meet the immediate line manager; the person you will report to. This is often best done at the second interview as it is so important that you gel within your immediate reporting structure. 9. Don’t ever take a job just for the money, you will end up by being very unhappy. 10. Be enthusiastic – would you employ you? A positive attitude is the most powerful attribute towards securing that dream job, then it’s up to you to maintain it and become a safe pair of hands to your employer. Then you will get promoted and your salary will increase. Good luck and great success.

Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood

Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year. Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October. Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do well in Page 8

containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show

even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Health

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Modern Technology: Don’t Let It Damage Your Health your monitor’s brightness and contrast. Position your monitor 20-28 inches away. • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds (preferably at an object around 20 feet away). Modern technology is a great tool for communication and information sharing, but it’s not always good for our health. The problem: Poor Sleep. Blue light emitted by many of our phones, tablets, monitors and flat-screen TVs can adversely affect melatonin, our sleep-inducing hormone. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration, reaction times and immunity, and can stimulate appetite. Long-term, it may affect language processing and our sense of time, and contribute to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Answer: Turn devices off for an hour before bedtime and reduce screen brightness in the evening. The problem: CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) CVS symptoms include eye muscle strain, eye irritation, blurred or double vision, headaches and neck pain. It’s caused by asking our eyes to cope with constant glare and focus readjustment as they flick between different images and text. The Answer: • Install a dimmer switch in your room and/or a glare filter for your screen, and adjust Page 16

The problem: Prolonged Sitting Research shows that prolonged sitting can seriously damage our health and shorten life expectancy - even if we exercise regularly. The Answer: Avoid prolonged sitting when possible, but if it’s unavoidable, break it up with short stints of activity, e.g. housework or a lunchtime football game. Also try: • Standing on public transport. • Walking/biking all or part of the way to work. • Investing in a standing, treadmill or convertible desk (or conversion equipment for your normal desk or treadmill). • Sitting on a yoga ball, which requires constant but subtle effort to stay balanced. • Active Sitting: try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lowering your leg from the knee or the hip height; swivelling your office chair with your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders. The problem: Aches, Pains and Poor Posture Using flat keyboards, laptops, mice and incorrectly positioned equipment can cause back pain, RSI (repetitive strain

injury) and Carpal Tunnel syndrome (tingling, numbness or pain in the hand, caused by compression of the median nerve). The Answer: Think Ergonomics • Sit as close as possible to your desk and keep it clear underneath to avoid twisting. • Set your computer monitor at eye level. Use laptops on a desk with an attached keyboard and raised monitor whenever possible. • Keep hands and wrists warm, and use ergonomic keyboards, mice and mouse-mats. Wrist supports may help. • Check your posture regularly. Beware slouching, leaning forward or to one side, craning your neck or hunching. • Adjust your chair so that: o Your back meets the chair back and your lumbar region is supported (a cushion that fits the small of your back may help). o Your knees are level with or slightly higher than your hips. o Your feet rest comfortably on the floor. o Your elbows are at 90° to your desktop. o Your arms are slightly raised at the shoulders. o The seat doesn’t dig in behind your knees but does support most of your upper thigh (three inches between seat and calf is ideal). To avoid the risks modern technology poses while still enjoying its benefits, remember: sit up, stand up and switch off occasionally!

25 years of service and still smiling! Labels Shopping Ross-onWye celebrates its 25th anniversary at the end of August and there’s lots of fun and activities taking place over the Bank Holiday Weekend for everyone. The original concept of the Labels store was conceived by local business woman, Angie Ellis, and the store opened its doors to the public in 1991. It quickly outgrew its premises and in 2001 had to relocate to a larger purpose-built building where it has been ever since, just next door.

Labels Shopping moved to its new home in 2001

In 2003 work was completed on the installation of a second floor which doubled the floor space to nearly 80,000 square feet, the size of two football pitches. Still a family business, Labels has continued to evolve - last year work was undertaken on the upper floor to improve the layout of the Café, Seafood Bar & Grill, Farm Shop, Deli and Butchery, with the recent addition of a new Laithwaite’s wine department, offering a wide selection of wines produced by farming families worldwide. This year the lower ground floor has been totally transformed and reconfigured with space for well-known brand names like Pavers Shoes, Double Two, Regatta, Craghoppers, Cotton

New shopping mall on the lower ground floor

Traders, Bonmarché, Roman, Skopes, Cadbury Outlet Shops and Jacques Vert. Over 120 local people are employed within the Labels building in addition to the work it provides for many other businesses in the area who supply them or who are associated with them. In addition, the new Handmade & Local department has given local artists and craftspeople a unique opportunity to display and sell their work to the million or so visitors to the store every year that would have otherwise not been aware of their work.

Local artists and craftspeople display and sell in the Handmade and Local department

The 25th Anniversary celebrations will be taking place all over the Bank Holiday Weekend at Labels, from Saturday 27th to Monday 29th August, with something of interest for all ages and things to do for all the family. Games, give-aways and extra savings of up to 25% off selected brands. Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, is located just off junction 4 of the M50 and is open 7 days a week.

Auction Anecdote Getting into a more ‘macho’ run of anecdotes lately I thought I would go the whole hog and base this month’s piece on a fantastic collection of eighteen flintlock pistols which sold particularly well in our June antiques sale. The single owner collection attracted widespread interest, mainly from collectors rather than dealers, many of whom came to the saleroom on the day. The collection included a selection of smaller sized ‘pocket’ and ‘muff ’ pistols as well as a variety of unusual barrel types including ‘cannon-barrelled’ and ‘rifled-barrelled’. This interesting mix of designs obviously added to the appeal of the group, especially as a number were double-barrelled, one was triple-barrelled and of course the rarest of all had four barrels! Prices ranged from around £200 for the first couple of examples with broken lock mechanisms, but rapidly rose to £400 to £700 for the more sought after doubleand triple-barrelled pistols. Naturally the top price was taken by the quadruplebarrelled example which quickly flew in price to the low one thousands and then the buyer in the room simply shouted out £2000 which finished off all the opposition as everyone was so surprised. Shouting out a high price like this is an old fashioned tactic used to both save time and also to shock and unnerve the opposition. I suppose it assumes buyers might gradually creep towards, and over a high figure bit by bit, but when forced to quickly decide (with the whole room waiting) they tend to give it up. However, I have seen the tactic both work and fail and in this instance it felt like perhaps he might have bought it cheaper if he had persevered bidding up in the time-honoured way with the auctioneer. Four-barrelled pistol Overall the entire collection made around £8000 with all the items on offer selling comfortably over estimate. I feel at this point I must own up that I have a bit of assistance cataloguing and valuing the weapons and Militaria and so much of the credit for the excellent results achieved on this occasion lies with another! Smiths next sale is on the 2nd September and includes a large selection of antiques and collectables with a special section for oriental items. nine lives. If it’s for you, sign up at www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23. 5. Got a credit card and always repay in full? Make it PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees recently, cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly exempted, so still pay a good whack. The fee-free www. AmericanExpress.com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex is http://money.asda. com Mastercard which pays 0.5% cashback (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis

Glad I read about Amex cashback card: I’ll get over £200 paid.” Yet only do this if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month or you’ll pay 22.9% (Amex) or 18.9% (Asda) rep APR interest, which more than wipes the cashback gain. 6. Sign up for a myWaitrose card for FREE daily tea and coffee Get the www.waitrose.com loyalty card – then in most stores you can get a totally free takeaway hot drink, every day from the self-service machine without buying anything. 7. Not got a credit card…? You’re less protected Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit

card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount. This get-out-of-jail-free card is hugely powerful if the retailer goes bust or won’t play fair, as Michelle found. She tweeted: “Successful Section 75 credit card claim, refunded £125 for non-delivery of phone order, used template on your website, thanks.” PS: If you’ve been burnt with credit cards in the past, or have little financial discipline, then ignore this point. 4 th Annual Help for Heroes tea party breaks £650 mark Last month, for the fourth year in a row, tea, coffee, cake, and even sunshine were served up in Newent as money was once again raised in aid of the Help for Heroes charity.

Len and Jill Lawton, who hosted their annual tea party with the support of friends and local businesses, managed to raise over £650. Jill said: "I can't believe that we have broken the record for funds raised yet again. We thought last year's sum of £450 was fantastic, but this year we have already raised £650 so far." Local businesses donated both prices for the raffle and the ingredients to make the cakes, while the Mid-Counties Cooperative store in the centre of town donated confections with all takings going straight to the national charities. Len Lawton explained: "We really could not have done it without the support of local businesses and friends such as Kerry Kornik, his wife Lindsey and daughter Tamsin. They helped us set up in the morning and served the teas and cake throughout the afternoon."

Painter, Parkers' DIY, Day Lewis Pharmacy and Andy Creese Butchers. The Newent Golf Club, the Mid Counties Co-ops in both Berkeley and Newent and, last but not least, Commander Crabb RN, Captain of the HMS Richmond, also made donations. Commander Crabb's prize was a full tour of his Type 23 Frigate, complete with lunch. Jill stated: "We have had so many people attend this year, despite the uncertainty of the weather." Flags, Help for Heroes bunting, balloons, cakes, coffee, tea, pastries and strawberries welcomed the crowds to Len and Jill's home in Newent as guests mingled in the gardens and under the gazebos which, thankfully, were redundant in the end as the rain stayed away for the fourth year in a row. The nation-wide charity Help for Heroes helps over 4,000 veterans, military personnel, and their families, every year through a network of Recovery

Centres. Their missions is to "deliver an enduring national network of support for our wounded and their families." "A big thank you goes out to everyone that attended the tea party, helped with the baking or setting up, donated prizes, and gave a donation despite not being able to make it" said Jill. "We couldn't have done it without everyone's help."

In total 19 raffle prizes were donated by the following residents, businesses and charities: Sheppard House, Mrs Pat Milsom, Mr and Mrs Yarworth, Mrs V Evans, Country Corner, Pippins, The Italian Kitchen, Time Hairdressing, The Tythings Store, The Nisa Shop, Cobblers Micro Pub, The Pottery

Home & Interiors Come Back To Carpet

Modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an enormous choice of colour, pattern and texture. Why choose carpet? Carpet is soft and comfortable underfoot, absorbs sound, is non-slip and forgiving if you have a fall, and is insulating against heat loss and draughts; however, it may stain and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance carpet needs, but accidental spills can be hard to deal with, and it’s unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood. choosing a carpet As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need, while the shorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear, meaning there is a tradeoff between softness and comfort against durability Page 30

By Katherine Sorrell

and resilience. Standard carpet descriptions are for light, moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which gives a good indication of suitability. So a hallway carpet should be very tough and classified for heavy domestic use, while a living room (general domestic) probably requires a luxury look combined with robust performance, and a spare bedroom could be more delicate. If you choose a carpet suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens and bathrooms. Ask your retailer for samples and take them home where you can see them in your own environment and light. If redecorating from floor to ceiling, choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme co-ordinates - the floor is the largest visible area in a room, so it’s important to get it right. Don’t forget the cost of underlay and fitting and get your room professionally measured, and when replacing a carpet, always buy new underlay. This ensures your new carpet sits properly and wears evenly and can prolong its life by up to 40 per cent. image - Padstow candy spot carpet, £69.99 per square metre, Brintons, tel 0800 505055, www.brintons.co.uk.

carpet fibres

Wool: Flame-retardant and compression resilient, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand. nylon: Extremely hard-wearing with the greatest abrasion resistance. It takes dye and stainresistance treatments well. polypropylene: Resistant to stains and abrasions, wears well and is value-for-money. Used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, with a lustrous appearance, mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres are blended together. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (probably the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.

carpet pile

loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Avoid if you have pets. cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. saxony: A deeper pile with a soft feel and appearance. shag: Extra-long pile. twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith A-Z of Computing - E is for Encryption This month’s topic will probably be of more interest to business IT users and those for whom data security is a concern. Encryption is the best way to keep your information safe from unauthorised users. It’s a hugely complicated topic so what I cover below is really just skimming the surface. In brief, encryption is putting your data in a scrambled form so that it can’t be read, unless you have the key to unscramble it. It’s very important to keep the key secure - if you lose the key along with the data, it’s like locking your front door but leaving the key in the lock. If you forget the key, it’s like locking the front door and throwing the key away! You may want to encrypt your data when at rest on your hard drive - one of the best tools for this is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) - it’s fairly straightforward to set up and use. PGP will only encrypt the folder/folders that you tell it to. VeraCrypt is another highly rated tool, that is free, and works on PCs, Macs and Linux. Microsoft included an encryption feature with Windows from Vista onwards - but it’s only available on Professional editions and above. BitLocker will encrypt your entire hard drive - to turn it on, simply go to the Control Panel and BitLocker Drive Encryption then follow the instructions. You can also use it to encrypt USB or portable hard drives, which are at greater risk of being lost. If someone finds the drive, they won’t be able to read the data without your personal key. Whatever tool you use, I highly recommend backing up the key, as if you lose it, the files will remain encrypted forever. You can also buy USB flash drives that come pre-encrypted and require the entry of a password, or a correct fingerprint scan to decrypt the data. They don’t require any additional software, and help to protect information on easily lost items. If you’re encrypting, don’t forget about your backup. You can just backup the encrypted files, but again if you lose your key, the backup is useless. Some professional backup services such as Amazon S3 will backup your data in encrypted form, and also encrypt it during transit to and from their server. If you have any questions about encryption, data security, or anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk or the number below.

Salmon and Broccoli Quiche Serves 6

Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes, plus chilling and cooling

A rich and creamy quiche packed full of succulent salmon flakes and broccoli. Serve warm or cold with a crisp green leaf salad.

Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 20cm loose-based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 300g salmon fillets

Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.

• 200g small broccoli florets • 4 large eggs • 250ml double cream • 100ml milk • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Meanwhile, place the salmon fillets in a deep frying pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil then simmer gently for 5-6 minutes until just cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and leave until cold. Roughly flake the salmon discarding any skin and bones. Steam the broccoli florets for 1-2 minutes until almost tender.

• 50g Cheddar cheese, finely grated

TIP Replace the salmon with flaked smoked mackerel for a change of flavour and add a handful of fresh chopped dill or parsley to the egg mixture. Page 34

Place the flaked salmon and broccoli in the pastry case. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the double cream and milk. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

5

Gently pour the egg mixture over the filling then scatter over the grated cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

It's hard to believe but another school year has flown by and we say goodbye to our wonderful year 6 as they move on for pastures new, while our new reception year has settled in with taster days through this last term. We raised over £400 for the school on our sports day and summer fair and even the parents competed in a few races! Thank you to all who came and enjoyed a BBQ and yummy pulled pork. The Junior class have been very busy learning about the Greeks and the sporting theme continued with their school play. “The Naked Truth” is a glorious romp through the history of the Olympic Games. It was performed by four year groups and there were some brilliant solo performances and excellent singing. Huge credit must go to class teacher, Mrs Rachel Greaves, who produced and directed, with help from Chair of the Governors and parent, Mrs Karen Boydell, for the amazing work with the scenery and backdrop. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. To visit our school in action you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward, at Pauntley School office on 01531 820053. admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk www.pauntleyschool.com

Will your dog take the plunge? Although swimming is one of the best exercises for your dog, as well as being a fun activity, not all dogs take well to swimming, and some are literally unable to swim due to their physiology. The short muzzle on bulldogs and pugs, for example, makes it very difficult to keep their nose and mouth above water and they are forced to take on an almost vertical position in order to stay afloat. Other breeds such as Labradors take to the water with a little too much enthusiasm at times, and it can seem impossible to get them out. Encouraging your dog to swim But if you have a reluctant swimmer on your hands, how can you persuade them to take the plunge?

Page 40

PETS

Choose a warm day, and calm water with no waves or currents.

Try to find a gentle slope down into the water, so your dog doesn’t fall in unexpectedly.

Make sure they know how to get back out again, to avoid panic.

Take some new or favourite floating toys, plus treats for when they come out.

If you can paddle alongside your dog, they’ll find it comforting at first, and of course plenty of treats will help. Although good exercise for your dog, swimming is also meant to be fun, so if they don’t take to it quite as enthusiastically as you’d hoped, it might be advisable to stay in the shallows and just let them paddle. http://talentedanimals.com/blog/helping-yourdog-learn-to-love-to-swim/ By Ann Haldon

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats - Fleas and Ticks With the warmer weather upon us this summer, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out, exploring and hunting in the sunshine, and whilst parasites are a problem all year round, they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in areas where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors, in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person; the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and a localised infection. Ticks sometimes also carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor), has recently been recorded in the UK; it was first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog’s immune system to attack its own

Lungworm is an increasing problem in the UK and unless prevented or treated quickly, can be fatal. Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

The Memorial Cross in the Long Tan rubber plantation

Every 18th August, Australia goes crazy for Long Tan Day – and even more so this year, when it’ll be Long Tan’s 50th anniversary! Never heard of it? Sadly, neither have many Australians (probably). Long Tan wasn’t a particularly remarkable South Vietnamese rubber plantation as South Vietnamese rubber plantations go; and the battle fought there on 18th August 1966 wasn’t a particularly big battle. It was a victory, though, and a victory whose effects lasted until the end of the Vietnam War nine bloody years later. But where does Australia come into this? Well, as SEATO and ANZUS pact signatories, the Australian and New Zealand armies had, since 1962, been secretly training the Americans in the jungle warfare techniques they’d learned in Burma in World War II and during the 1948-1960 Malayan Emergency. But when President Johnson decided to escalate the war he was desperate for overt allies – the “Many Flags” programme – to confer legitimacy on a war the UN wouldn’t and couldn’t support. Harold Wilson, our newly elected Labour PM, offered diplomatic and intelligence support but flatly refused to send any troops – a decision that was to cost him dearly very soon afterwards. Australia Page 44

and New Zealand, though, having regional interests, agreed. A battalion of the Royal Australian Rifles together with light armoured support and 161 battery of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, along with a destroyer and an old aircraft carrier converted into a troop carrier, and a squadron each of Caribou transports, Canberra bombers and Huey helicopters, joined the Americans in 1965. A year later the nowacclimatised 1ATF was given a province of its own to run, Phuoc Tuy on the south coast. Phuoc Tuy was almost entirely run by the Viet Cong and North Vietnam Army; the South Vietnamese ARVN held only the main towns. 1ATF therefore put itself in harm’s way, establishing a base, Nui Dat, right across the Communists’ supply route, and the NVA/VC forces duly prepared to eliminate it. By 16th August the NVA had established guns and mortars at Long Tan, 2km from Nui Dat, and opened fire. These were quickly silenced by RNZA counter-fire, though, and patrols sent out on the 17th found only empty gun positions and mortar pits. On the 18th a company of 108 men was dispatched to locate the NVA, but an entire regiment of the NVA plus a battalion of VC found them first. In a battle that raged for hours in pouring monsoon rain the Australians held off a force 10 times their number, and only survived thanks to the RNZA’s supporting fire and the fresh ammunition dropped by the RAAF. At nightfall they were relieved by reinforcements from Nui Dat, and under cover of darkness the NVA/VC silently melted away. The next

morning’s recce revealed why: while the Australians had lost 18 killed and 24 wounded, they had killed 245 of their enemies. That one day’s battle broke the VC’s grip on Phuoc Tuy for good: two serious attempts to reassert themselves failed and it became the most peaceful – or rather, the least troubled – province in South Vietnam. The Australians and New Zealanders withdrew gradually from Vietnam over the course of 1972, never having been numerous enough to achieve much: even at their peak 1ATF and the other formations numbered less than 9,000, and their governments never allocated them enough air and artillery support to make their tactic of close and continuing infantry engagement as effective as it had been in Malaya. Meanwhile, Wilson and the Labour government paid heavily for a principled refusal to get involved. Johnson, an aide revealed later, would have paid a billion dollars for a single British brigade, enough to close the trade gap that caused the 1967 “pound in your pocket” devaluation crisis. But say what you like about Wilson and his crew: they wouldn’t sell blood for dollars.

CHOIRS: Old Hat or the Smart Secret to Keeping Young? Since Gareth Malone broke on to the scene with his youthful looks and those black-rimmed glasses that charmed the socks off those military wives, giving them a new focus on life rather than continually worrying about their loved ones serving abroad, there has been an explosion in numbers of choristers and new choirs. Choirs and groups of people singing together goes back to ages past. Locally there are many different choirs scattered around the county giving pleasure to all that hear them. One such local choir is the Churchdown Male Voice Choir that has been performing as a choir for fifty years. The male voice choir is probably most usually associated with miners in South Wales, where every village had at least one male choir and the joy of singing brought huge health and social benefits to the population. One can imagine the relief of being lifted to the surface after the

toil and hardship endured during a long shift underground in the coal mines. The miners would wash down and greedily quench that growing thirst, generated through the hard work and coal dust, with that first ale, before opening their lungs to release the pent-up emotions, frustrations and dust of the day in song. No wonder the hearty anthems generated from the 'Valleys' are loud, passionate and rejoice the joy and relief of seeing out another day in life's cruel lot. Generally audiences for local choirs are good, but for the male voice choirs there appears to be a false perception that they only sing the songs steeped in tradition and are full of 'old men!' There is a strand of truth in that. Many join these choirs in their 30's to 40's and enjoy it so much they stay. Some didn't think they could sing when they started and many can not read music at the beginning, but they soon pick up the basics

and develop enjoying the same comradeship that united those early miners. Time moved on but the health benefits of singing remain. Choirs are always seeking new members, not only for sharing the joy and benefits of singing but to ensure their continued survival. Convincing people that they really can sing once they shrug off their doubts and insecurities is difficult but, once someone takes the plunge, the difference is vast and reflected in their performance. Churchdown Male Voice choir raise 10 -12 thousand pounds each year for local and national charities. The choir is always open to consider helping promote any charity with a performance when contacted directly, so please get in touch. Details can be found online at www.churchdownmvc.com. In its fifty-first year the choir is going back to the roots of its singing - South Wales. In the autumn they will be the guests of top choir Morriston Orpheus in Swansea, and they will also be singing with the Dunvant Male Choir in nearby Mumbles.

RELAXING THE NATURAL WAY When was the last time you allowed yourself to relax?

Carol Clark, who practices Reflexology at Newent Osteopaths and works throughout the three counties, says "Reflexology is a gentle therapy that reduces the effects of stress and anxiety giving relief from physical and emotional tension, helping the body to return to its natural balance". It is a relaxing complementary and natural therapy and growing in popularity. Reflexology has been practised since around 2500 BC by Page 48

the Egyptians, Chinese, Indians and Native North Americans. It is described as a gentle, firm but soothing massage which stimulates the flow of blood, unblocking the energy lines in the body to allow the body to rebalance itself.

Carol, who has lived in Newent for most of her life adds " I had a positive experience with Reflexology when I was young which I did not forget. When my children were grown and left home I decided to look into Reflexology. I trained and qualified in Malvern using the technique developed from the work of American Eunice D Ingram. Later I qualified in the new technique developed in the UK and known as "Finger Free Reflexology" which allows the practitioner to deliver consistently even pressure and more effective treatments".

As to the therapy Carol says "Once my consultation has established the appropriate therapy you only need to remove your socks and shoes, have your feet cleansed and lie on a couch or reclining chair for the massage to take place. Some people prefer to have their hands and lower arms massaged instead, which is just as effective and despite rumours, does not tickle". In our increasingly busy and stressful lives we all need time to relax. Reflexology can help you to Relax - Restore - Revive. For appointments Carol can be contacted on 07925 268466 or on email - carol@carolsfeet.co.uk. - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Holiday Reads For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend. Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over. The Last of Us – Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heartwrenching story. Page 52

Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters. Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now

is the time to pick up the 40th anniversary edition. Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shutin’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

About Newent & District Rotary Club Our Club meetings take place on Tuesday evenings in the upstairs room of The Red Lion. We meet at 6.45pm for a 7pm dinner. The Club offers a variety of activities and occasionally hosts talks with speakers from all walks of life. Detailed below are examples of what Rotary is all about, with our motto being ‘Service above Self’ within the community. You are most welcome to join us. Rotary Presidential Handover Meeting

Ladies from Newent Inner Wheel visit this year’s Rotary Handover meeting.

Past President Paul Gurney handed over the ‘chain of office’ to incoming President Clive Gardiner at our meeting on 30th June. Clive has a busy year planned out for the Club with interesting speakers, social events, visits, charity fundraising, and more to look forward to. The Club is currently planning a ‘Money Mile’ charity event which will hopefully take place at Newent's Big Lunch next year. Local children from schools, nurserys and other children’s groups will be encouraged to join us by filling in ‘Money Mile’ sponsorship cards and placing them around Newent Lake, to hopefully form a mile. All proceeds will go to charity. Further details to follow. Rotary and the ‘Meningitis NOW’ Charity Steve Dayman, Executive Founder

of the ‘Meningitis NOW’ charity, visited the Club on 12th July and gave a brilliant and inspirational presentation on the work his charity does. Steve set the charity up some 30 years ago, following the sad loss of his baby son. You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but you’ll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. There’s no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros • Easily blocked if the card is lost or stolen. • Chip and pin protection. Cons • No consumer protection as

For the sake of safety and simplicity, you might want to pay using the local currency rather than in sterling because of the huge disparity in exchange rates.

Cash

Although it’s not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, you’ll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around £200 to £500 of cash on average. Pros • You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go. • Can be used anywhere.

Cons • May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. • Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. It’s a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and traveller’s cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange. https://www.moneyadvice service.org.uk/en/articles/travelmoney-options-cash-cards-andtravellers-cheques http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/credit-cards/prepaid-travelcards http://www.money.co.uk/travelmoney/what-is-the-best-way-tospend-abroad.htm http://blog.moneysavingexpert. com/2013/03/12/using-plasticoverseas-always-pay-in-euroseven-if-it-says-0-commission/

Hobbies ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’? Become A Wildlife Recorder! By Kate McLelland According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as “nature deficit disorder”. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day (find out more at www.bnhc. org.uk). However if 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a range of wildlife initiatives Page 60

that keep going all year round. Love our Ladybirds Go to www.ladybird-survey. org to find information about this much-loved insect, which belongs to the scientific family Coccinellidae. These attractive creatures come in a range of different colours and sizes, from the tiny yellow 22-spot Ladybird to the pea-sized Eyed Ladybird. Ladybird research is important because of the recent invasion by the Harlequin Ladybird, which now threatens to overwhelm our native populations. On the Ladybird Survey website you’ll find links to a website where you can record sightings of the Harlequin. buy a mammaL tunneL Even wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures. The Footprint Tunnel is a non-invasive tool designed to help researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints, captured on special inked paper. A Footprint Tunnel kit is available from The Mammal Society at www.mammal.org.

uk at a cost of £15.54 (including VAT). You can download a free, printable guide from the same site to help you identify different species from their paw-prints. add vaLue to your birdwatching hobby BirdTrack is a national research programme that uses people power to supply information on birds where there are currently gaps in our knowledge (for example, very little is known about the timing of arrivals and departures of migrating species). The information you supply to BirdTrack could eventually be used to protect our birds, particularly rare species. Just register on the site www. bto.org as a recorder and the next time you go birdwatching, enter the location you’ve visited, the date and time of your visit then check off the birds you spotted on the list provided. There are many other ways that you can get involved in monitoring wildlife, including a butterfly survey, a national reptile and amphibian recording scheme, a flying ant survey and a shark egg case hunt! These innovative wildlife recording projects are not only a fantastic way to learn about the great outdoors, they also make a real contribution to the nation’s knowledge, so get out there and start recording today.
