From the Editor

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Just like you, we at Newent Magazine were saddened to hear of the passing on of Newent's oldest resident, Bert Bullock, in January. Those who knew Uncle Bert will tell you what an amazing person he was, how he would greet you with a warm smile and always had the time to say hello everytime you saw him. Newent came to a standstill recently as people came to pay their last respects to a true Newent legend. Bert Bullock was born in Huntley in 1912 and apart from a spell in the RAF, he spent all of his life in and around Newent, living to the age of 103. Newent has sadly lost one of its most upstanding residents and a true gentleman who will be missed by everyone. The world would be a better place if we had more "Uncle Bert's".

CHELTENHAM

Best wishes,

Martin Lewis

Bert on his last journey through Newent town The funeral for Albert Bullock took place on Monday 25th January 2015 at St Mary's Church in Newent. 'Uncle Bert' took his last journey through Newent to the church in a horse carriage. The cortege left his home in Watery Lane and moved through Newent to the church. His coffin was borne by a beautiful carriage pulled by two magnificent black horses that he would have loved.

In a fitting tribute people stopped what they were doing and all the shopkeepers along the route came out to pay their respects as the cortege passed. At St Mary's the service was attended by around 400 people and wonderful eulogies and memories were given by Rev Simon Mason and Rev Pat Phillips, making the congregation smile at times with memories of Bert.

Beard, Dep Mayor David Bick, Colin Thomas and Karen Draper also attended. The interment took place in the Cemetery and mourners adjourned to the Kings Arms afterwards. The service and horse carriage were organised by Smiths of Newent. - by Colin Thomas

The congregation sang the hymn Praise my soul, which Simon Mason noted would have been sung by Bert as a choir boy at the age of 17. Representatives from the District Council, Councillor Len Lawton, and the Town Council, Cllrs Roger

Malswick House - An Inn with a difference Malswick House is a traditional Inn situated on the edge of Newent. In July 2015, the free house reopened under new management with a brand new lease of life. The pub provides the locals and visitors from afar with a mouth-watering menu, offering great quality food made from local ingredients. They also offer a great selection of craft beer, local ales, cider, wine and juices including the nearby Three Choirs and Bentleys Castle Fruit Farm. Malswick House is committed to ensuring that the pub is a warm and welcoming place where everyone is made to feel at home, whether they are just popping in for a drink, enjoying a lunch or relaxing by our log fire during those colder months. In the summer, visitors will be surprised to find a beautiful and tranquil courtyard

behind the pub with a wonderful and well established grape vine covering the outdoor tables, as well as a marquee available for functions and events.

as all its profits go directly to the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal Trust. This enables the trust, to one day, restore the canal behind this great pub which will make Malswick House the only canal-side pub in Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. So, when you next pop in for a drink, not only do you get to enjoy yourself but you are also helping along a wonderful local project. Malswick House is well worth a visit!

Feathered Friends by Pippa Greenwood

Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and as many help to keep pests at bay for much of the year it makes sense to encourage them in. You can provide a haven for wild birds as long as you have a fair number of potential hiding places, such as a few good sized shrubs or trees - and trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome. But what else can you do to encourage your feathered friends into the garden? A source of water really is one of the best features, so either buy an ornamental birdbath or create one from a shallow dish with sloping sides. The water should be no deeper than 2” (5 cm) and if you do have a deeper container then you should fill the lower depths of it with good sized stones, to reduce the depth. Ideally the water should be changed every other day, but at this time of year it is essential to make sure that the water does not freeze for long periods of time. Other garden water features, including ponds with shallow sloping sides, are also perfect for many birds to feed and bathe in. Providing birds with additional

food materials is worthwhile, but remember to provide a constant supply or they may come to rely on something that is not there when they need it most. If you have a problem with squirrels, then use a squirrel proof feeder – they resemble bird cages and hold a central cylinder of peanuts, though they can cost up to £40. If squirrels are not a problem, use a cheaper nut feeder, but position it so it is out of range of cats. Save household scraps for the birds too; they enjoy apples, cooked rice, cheese, old breakfast cereal, raisins and sultanas and, of course, bread. Buy fat balls which contain mixed seeds and hang them from trees or large shrubs where they will provide a fantastic meal for many birds and, provided you position them correctly, means that you can also enjoy watching them. I only buy the net-free fat balls,

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

as birds’ feet can get trapped in the net. You can also buy grubs and larvae to feed the birds. These high protein snacks are particularly useful once birds start feeding their young in the spring, and are best distributed on a bird table or even on a garage roof. They are available by mail order or from garden centres and pet shops. If you feel like making or buying a bird table on which to set out the feasts you are supplying, then so much the better. Choose one which is not easily accessible by cats, and position it where you can watch the birds as they feed and drink. I mainly feed the birds on top of an old, established hedge. It is just tall enough for me to reach its flat clipped top surface and I put out bird food on flat wooden trays – perfect for me to view and impossible for cats to get the wrong idea about who is meant to be eating! Auction Trends for 2016 I thought it would be pertinent to celebrate the start of the new year with a quick run-down on current auction trends and collecting fashions rather than my normal monthly anecdote. One of the most noticeable trends this year has been the slowing down of the Chinese market which has been in a strong boom period for the last few years as one might have anticipated in line with China’s general economy. Chinese antique values had soared wildly but as with all steeply climbing markets it had to come to an end some time. Not that prices for Chinese items have collapsed they have just pulled back to a more sensible level which will probably prove to be more controlled and sustainable in the long run. Traditional antiques have tended to stay very subdued with certain iconic items such as antique maps, brass candlesticks and Royal Commemorative China finding it almost impossible to find buyers. The truth of the matter is that very few young people are wanting to buy such ‘old fashioned’ items and supply far exceeds demand. The antique furniture market continues to see very selective buying with some success stories countering the general doom and gloom that this subject currently often inspires. Some interior designers are now balancing a few carefully chosen antiques with modern inspired interiors – such pieces tend to be simple classic designs – for example early oak furniture, Arts & Crafts or fine quality Georgian pieces. Ornate Victorian furniture is still not popular and mediocre furniture without any useful function is definitely ‘out’. Classic mahogany dining furniture is at all time low as more and more people eat in the kitchen and not surprisingly prefer lightwoods and modern styles. However useful items such as antique bookcases, chest of drawers and storage furniture continues to sell steadily. Designer vintage furniture continues to perform very well with the greatest interest coming from dealers based in large cities who source their stock online. Areas of the market which have continued to expand include antique postcards, small collectables, coins, medals and gentlemen’s wrist watches (for some reason this does not apply to ladies wrist watches which are far less in demand). Jewellery has also continued to sell very well with large diamonds having performed exceptionally at Smiths last year. I have recently been informed that the market is now moving into good sapphire and ruby set pieces as well. Natural pearls have also made record prices in the last few years but these are rare and far between as 99% of pearls sold are cultured – interestingly the only sure way to tell the difference is to have the pearl tested and keep the certificate. The paintings market has seen a huge boom in contemporary and 20th century art whilst Victorian watercolours have taken a hit and more traditional paintings have stayed in the doldrums. This is reflected in the interior fashion for having one large eye catching painting on a wall rather than a number of attractive but less ‘visually arresting’ antique works. Collectables such as this James Overall it appears to be a fantastic time Bond poster which made to buy many traditional antiques and £290 are more popular than a good time to sell all the small niche a Victorian watercolour! collectables lurking forgotten in your drawers. Smiths hold drop in valuation days on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a closing date of two weeks before each sale. The saleroom is very friendly and approachable and more than happy to offer sales and buying advice to prospective customers. Richard Denny Your Success Coach The media have called Richard Denny ‘The Millionaire Maker’. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world.

10 Tips for a success mind-set Success of course is different for us all and what we perceive success to be. The one thing that all successful athletes, musicians, singers and self-made millionaires have in common is an attitude (mind-set) of success. They didn’t acquire this after their achievements. So here are a few tips for you to have that mind-set: 1. You must have an objective, a purpose or something you really want to achieve. This becomes your goal or goals, your mind must know exactly what it has to achieve. 2. Make it a habit to be positive, some habits take a while to cultivate and transform into subconscious automatic behaviour. Make it a habit to be positive every day. 3. Use repetition; athletes build muscle by continuous repetition, in a similar way we need to continually send the right messages to the brain. Ten repetitions of a thought will embed that thought into your achievement mechanism. 4. Use positive affirmations 'I can' as against 'I can’t', 'I am good at...' as against 'I’m no good'. This may sound ridiculous but I promise it works. What we tell our mind our mind will deliver. 5. Smile, you will find it so much harder to have negative thoughts when you

are smiling. ‘A frown brings a wrinkle, a smile brings a twinkle’. 6. Plan doing something towards your success each day. By planning and doing something constructive each day you will progress towards your goal. One of the laws of motivation says ‘seeing ourselves progressing motivates us’. 7. Discard negative thoughts; when you have taken photographs, you discard those out of focus or badly lit, you just keep the quality images. Your mind can work the same way, cast out the negative images and replace them with positive ones. 8. Think of problems as challenges; use the word challenge rather than problem. It’s fascinating how our mind positively embraces a challenge whereas a problem is a de-motivator. 9. Before you go to sleep the last thoughts should always be on what you want, never on what you don’t and best of all to include some thankyous for your day and those that have helped you. 10. All of the above thrive on a clear objective and a goal. So you must be absolutely sure what it is you are striving for and that objective must not be money. There is not a millionaire or billionaire who chased money as their goal. Money comes as a by-product of successful achievement.

Local Newent business saves money across Forest A local business has hit the ground running this year as it strives to save local businesses and residents money across the Forest. Based in Newent and run by Simon and Sue Hollingshead, the local distributor at Utility Warehouse has already made an impact locally, saving one business almost £5,000. However they are refusing to stop there. Simon, who set up with his wife Sue two years ago, is this year planning on focussing his full attention on his role to make sure that their business, as well as others locally, can grow and benefit. He said: "When Sue and I set up two years ago I had no idea I would end up doing this as a full time job. "I am passionate about saving people money and want to be able to do even more to make sure that we can save even more people money."

District Councillors in their area to discuss their plans for expansion as well as the results they have already achieved for people. Cllr Craig Lawton, whose Oxenhall & Newent North East ward the business is based in, met them along with Cllr Len Lawton to discuss the savings achieved for businesses in Len's Newent Central ward so far.

to pay up to £200 to get people out of contracts if we can provide them with a better one."

Cllr Craig Lawton said: "Its really good to see another business thriving in my ward.

Cllr Len Lawton said "If Simon and Sue are able to save local businesses money that can only be good news.

"The fact that in turn they can also help other businesses to save money and grow can only be good news."

"If their work can help local businesses then it will also be a benefit to shoppers and the local economy as a whole."

Utility Warehouse recently announced that they have bought an electricity company to make sure that they can provide the best value rates. On many other services and utilities they negotiate the best possible rates so as pass on a great a saving as possible. Sue Hollingshead added "We go much further than just providing savings on electricity and gas costs.

"Whether someone is living on their own, has a growing family, or runs a business, we are able to find them the best deals possible to drive their bills down."

"We have also saved people money on their landline and broadband as well as mobile. With the UK's most generous cash back card we also save people more money on their general shopping bills from groceries to holidays."

Simon and Sue recently met with

"In some cases we have been able

One local couple worked out they could have saved themselves £140 off their utility bill if they had shopped on-line with the Utility Warehouse on-line shopping site. Another Newent resident who is now making a saving of over £800 every year said that the service from Simon and Sue was “the best thing since sliced bread.” Simon added "Not only are we working to save people money on their bills, we are also doing all we can to help them to be greener as well. "If we are able to save a household money on their bills and they take up the offer we also replace all the light bulbs in their house with low cost LED lightbulbs to cut down on their energy by a further 11%. "Along with this we also make sure that they are replaced for free whenever needed." Utility Warehouse is a FTSE 250 with over 600,000 customers that has been operating since 1997. They have also been awarded the 'Which' Award for customer services and the services for the last 8 years. Last year they were awarded three awards by 'Moneywise' the UK's leading consumer finance magazine.

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith Broadband 101 High speed broadband has finally come to Newent, so we’re here to decipher the jargon from the internet providers, and help you tell your ADSL from your Cable from your Fibre. These are all terms for different types of broadband: - ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is the type of broadband most of you will have, delivered via your telephone line. - Cable internet is usually supplied by Virgin Media in the UK, and is only available in cabled areas. - Fibre is the new high speed broadband, supplied by fibre optic cables rather than the traditional copper ones. If you've found a broadband offer which quotes speeds of 30Mb or more, it's most likely to be fibre optic or cable broadband. Fibre optic cables can carry more data at faster speeds than the copper cables used for traditional broadband connection, so internet providers that use these cables can offer superfast packages. The thing to watch out for, is that most fibre optic broadband suppliers (BT, TalkTalk, Plusnet etc) use technology called fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC). This means that the faster cables only run as far as the green telephone cabinet connected to your house. The cables that between the cabinet and your house, sometimes called the "last mile" - make a real difference to the speeds you actually receive. The closer your are to the green cabinet, the faster your connection will be; if you have a much longer "last mile", your connection speeds and quality may suffer. So what is cable internet, if they all use cables? ADSL and Fibre broadband use the traditional copper cables for the last mile to your house - and these can’t carry as fast a signal as fibre optic. Cable internet, from Virgin Media, uses coaxial cable right up to your house, so will not suffer any speed loss compared to copper cable. If you’re a business that relies heavily on a broadband connection for critical matters, you may want to consider a leased line. This is essentially your own private internet connection, not affected by how many other users are online, or the distance to the cabinet. You will be looking at £150 or more, but could get speeds of up to 10Gb per second! If you want to talk about broadband, need help setting it up, or have queries on anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk, or search for us on Facebook or Twitter!

The Life List Collective Intelligence As every good pub quizzer knows, each animal has its own group noun. Any great quizzer can tell you that it was originally a clowder of cats*, and kine for cows, but few can tell you how they came about. I think it’s time for an overhaul of the system so that it makes more sense and is a bit more entertaining. I’ve made a start with British animals. A belfry of bats, a nudity of bears (once upon a time), a busyness of bees, a controversy of beavers, a yawn of boars, a moo-vement of cattle, a rightly of choughs, an embarrassment

Page 26

of crabs, an expense of deer, a handful of eels, a filch of ferrets, a pursuit of foxes, a fumble of geese, a getting of goats, an inebriation of newts, a plucker of pheasants, a chatter of rabbits, an executive of rats, a populace of sheep, an invasion of snails, a world-wide-web of spiders, a secrecy of squirrels, a festivity of turkeys and a caution of wasps. And why stop with animals? Surely occupations would benefit from having their own collective nouns too? Try these ones on for size! How about a disappointment of politicians (or a scandal!), a mistrust of bankers, a blarney of estate agents, a mockery of Justices of the Peace, an abandonment of principals, a percentage of statisticians, a guesswork of meterologists, an estimate of builders, or a waft of perfumiers? * Clowder is apparently related to the word clutter. And if that wasn’t strange enough, kittens had their own collective noun: kindle. By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

Home & Interiors Plan Your Perfect Family Bathroom

Is your bathroom family-friendly? Think layout, fittings, flooring, lighting and all-important storage space – and turn your bathroom into an appealing haven for both children and adults, says Katherine Sorrell. THE SPACE If your room is small but there’s a tiny, adjacent WC, consider knocking down the wall in between to combine them into one family-friendly room. If there are a lot of bedrooms compared to the number of bathrooms, it may make sense to convert a bedroom into a second bathroom. The least expensive way to overhaul a family bathroom is to keep the fixtures and fittings in the same place, which avoids the costs of altering pipe runs. On the other hand, if the layout isn’t right – perhaps you want to create space to add a separate shower – you’ll have to re-arrange the room. Measure up and draw a plan on graph paper, noting the position of doors and windows, radiators, the soil pipe and any other permanent fixtures. Then decide what fittings you require: a bath, Page 28

walk-in shower, WC, basin (or two – ideal for busy bathrooms), radiator and/or heated towel rail (big enough for LOTS of towels)… A specially designed showerbath, wider at one end and with a curved-glass screen, can be a great space-saver, and try to include as much storage as you can, so plastic toys can be put away when you need a calm, grown-up space. Vanity units can be built under basins, also concealing pipework, and WCs can be placed against false walls which contain both the cistern and some storage space; you can also use wall and floor cupboards, either custom-made or off-the-peg, plus conventional storage ideas such as a hinged chest with a padded seat on top and shelves, racks, boxes and baskets. Finally, draw all your fittings to the same scale as your floor plan, and cut them out. Move them around until you find the best layout, allowing generous activity space for knees, elbows, drying and so on, around each fitting. FITTINGS In a bathroom that’s used regularly by all members of the family, young and old, flexibility is key. Opt for a timeless white suite with an easy-clean finish, plus neutral tiles, and add bold colours and fun patterns in the form of towels, mats, handles and hooks. Wall-hung fittings are easier to clean around, as well as making the space seem bigger; for small children, a sturdy, portable step will help them reach the loo and basin. Ensure taps and shower have an anti-scald device and touch-safe surfaces, and set thermostatic mixers to low temperatures. FLOORING Bathroom floors must be nonslip, easy to clean and mustn’t

mind getting wet. Don’t use carpet, and avoid solid wood as it may shrink or warp. If you like the look of timber, however, you may be able to install marinegrade ply, engineered boards, laminate, bamboo or tropical hardwoods. Ceramic tiles are ideal, especially as they work brilliantly with underfloor heating (cosy toes!), while alternatives include linoleum, which has a classic look and is made from environmentally friendly materials, rubber – available in an array of gorgeous colours – and the ever-popular and practical vinyl. LIGHTING Lighting really makes a difference to the mood of a bathroom and, if possible, it should be planned in the initial design stages. Include good general, overall lighting, perhaps in the form of inset ceiling spotlights or (less expensive) a ceiling-mounted track, plus some task lights, by the mirror, for shaving or applying make-up. Clever ideas include: storage units that incorporate lighting; fitting uplighters in flooring; an led colour-changing lamp operated by remote control; adding a colourful light stream to your tap water and even illuminated tiles. You could even consider fitting low-level lighting that comes on automatically when someone enters the room – great for night-time toilet visits. Remember that when any light fitting is near water, it must be manufactured with suitable protection against splashing – designated by an IP coding of 4 and above.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Follow Tom on Twitter @groomsdaybook

I returned home from the health centre after my annual MOT to be confronted by my Dearly Beloved’s demand for the prognosis. “So Tom, how did your check up go?” “A complete waste of time. These new age medical fads will have me in an early grave.” “In other words, she told you to go on a diet?” “I think she muttered something about broccoli.” “Did she measure your BMI?” “What didn’t she measure? Anyway I think the old quack was down in the dumps, she kept saying things were morbid.” “As in obese? Right that’s it, no more biscuits for you. What’s that in your hand?” Sarah prised the card from my fingers. “A gym membership? You’re joining a gym?” Page 32

“Doctors orders apparently. And less of the sniggers please.” After a trip to a large out of town sports retailer (which looked to me like one big jumble sale), I turned up at the sparkly new gym freshly clad in Lycra. I spotted my reflection in the reception mirror. I looked like a shrink-wrapped WC Fields. A little boy dressed in crepe paper rustled towards me. I was about to ask him if he was a school boy on the run from the Wag Man when he cheerily piped up, “Hi I’m Jason, I’m going to be showing you around the gym.” And so we entered a vast cathedral of glistening stainless steel and skin tight leggings. I strolled past all manner of appalling contraptions. Finally, we arrived in a dark corner of the gym, the floor of which was covered by squishy blue mats.

“So Tom, if you would like to warm up?” “Warm up? Right, well you can either turn down the air conditioning or I can go and get my jumper.” Jason looked worried. “OK, I’ll go and get Nigel. He’s going to do your induction.” It was then I spotted him, bounding over like a Super Hero straight from the set of Avengers Age of Ultron. Enviously I observed how Nigel suited Lycra a lot better than did I. “Hi Tom! My name’s Nigel …let me ask you some health questions, we don’t want you croaking on one of our machines and suing us, now do we?” His laughter evaporated in the cold dry air of the gym. “Seriously, do you work out?” “The last time I worked anything out was the clock on our new oven and that

left me pretty breathless, I can tell you.” “Err OK, have you ever suffered from any of the following - angina, asthma, arthritis, slipped disc, joint pain, calcium deficiency?” “Not as yet…” I said, warily. “Great! Right, let’s jump on this bad boy.” Bad boy? I mouthed to myself. And so we set off on what can only be described as a Penrose Staircase of endless agony. After ten minutes of purgatory I held up my hand in protest. Nigel stopped the machine. “Are you alright Tom?”

“Great! I’m just in the middle of some bicep curls.”

“The warm up! You mean there’s more?”

“I hope he’s not working you too hard.”

“Oh yes! Another forty five minutes more.”

And with that a familiar voice was overheard: “Same again old chap?”

“Not for me there isn’t sunshine, that’s quite enough for one day, thank you.” “But Tom, don’t you want rock hard buns?” “If I want rock hard buns I’ll go home and fetch my bread making machine down from the loft.”

“Thank goodness that’s over!” I gasped.

Half an hour later I answered a call from Sarah.

“Yes, why not?” A pause then Sarah, her voice hardening, said “Tom…are you in the pub?” “Sorry love, got to go. It’s my round. But if it’s any consolation, these vegetable crisps are broccoli flavour, so how’s that?” Well, as any athlete will tell you, it’s never advisable to over train. Page 33

Tribute to Uncle Bert It is sad to report the passing of probably Newent’s most favourite son, Bert Bullock, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Bert’. Bert seems to have been a fixture in Newent for many years and many Newent residents will recall his happy demeanour and his caring interest in all those he met. Whenever he met someone new he was always the first to say hello and he would spend much of his time walking through town stopping and talking to everyone. Bert was born in Westbury, Wilts in 1912. He started work early, as they did in those days, after moving to Huntley to live with his granny. At the

Page 36

age of 12 his first job was as a Butchers Boy. Amongst his butchers duties he was required to assist in cattle drives, on foot, driving cattle from Newent to Huntley. His main job was to block off lanes to ensure none of the cattle escaped. They would always stop off at the Farmers Boy pub for a break where the cattle driver had a beer and, being 12, Bert was allowed a lemonade. He moved on from this to become postman with a bike and also worked with Forest Products during which time he also sang with the local choir in Huntley Church. He met his wife, Nancy and they subsequently married in 1937, whereupon they moved to Newent to live, where their son Edmund was born. In 1939 Bert felt he had to do his duty and joined the RAF as a batman to Canadian bomber pilots in the Hebrides. It recently transpired that Bert had never received his medals for his war service, however this was put right in a ceremony organised by Craig Lawton. Bert said at the time that he was very proud to receive the medals.

He was demobbed at the end of the war and returned to Newent to work as a labourer with the local building firm Bidmead. Here he was required to dig out sand for building and to collect recovered bricks from Gloucester. Bert then moved on to the Sawmills (now LFH) where he lost one of his fingers in a circular saw accident. He was proud to say his ‘pension’ for this was £1/week which he has received every week since. It appears it was not index linked! Retirement eventually came around so Bert concentrated on his favourite hobby, gardening. This of course gave him more time to spend in town and many of us will remember him walking through town stopping by every shop to wave talking to everyone he met. In recent years Bert had many visits to hospital but always asked to be driven around his old haunts. During one of these he unerringly managed to find the Farmers Boy that he used to visit as a boy 90 years earlier and it was still there! Cassie, his niece, who spent many years looking after him says in a wonderful tribute: “Bert was a wonderful man, a true gentleman. He very seldom showed off and loved people, especially the people of Newent”. Barbara, who runs Reflections Hairdessing in Newent said, “I remember when I first moved to Newent. The first person I met was Bert who tipped his hat and said ‘Good Morning’. I was wondering if I had made the right decision moving here but

meeting Bert in this way made me feel I had done the right thing. This was 38 years ago.” Local resident Heather Stephens knew Bert well and says “Bert was always a kind gentleman and was always turned out very smartly, even when he was 100. Indeed he told me that when he reached 100 his doctor sent him a bottle of whisky!” Bert was well known and loved throughout Newent. He touched the lives of all who knew him and we will greatly miss his bright, sparkly presence. Rest in peace, Uncle Bert. - written by Colin Thomas

Hobbies Ten Tips To Bring Your Treasures Back To Life By Kate McLelland

Many years ago in London’s famous Portobello market, I came across a grimy old box made of wood. At first glance didn’t look like anything special, but on closer inspection I saw that some fine veneer work was visible in places. “Ten quid. A bit of wire wool and some washing up liquid straight out of the bottle, and that’ll come up lovely.” It sounded unlikely, but I paid the stallholder and took the box home, where I nervously began to rub the surface with a steel wool pad. As the dirt melted away I uncovered an intricate inlaid marquetry design, and my grimy box eventually emerged as a beautiful antique that I’ve loved ever since. Although I was successful, I suspect most experts hearing of my method would tear out their hair. Remember these points before starting your own projects: • Some antiques are valued for their patina and certain items – such as old coins – should never be polished. • Check very old items for cracks that may break during cleaning. • If in any doubt, do some research or ask an expert. • Avoid using harsh chemicals

or abrasive cloths. Here are ten tips for restoring your vintage bargains: • To remove general grime from old prints, gently roll a piece of doughy, fresh bread over the surface. • To remove old, rusted-in screws, first clean around screw head edges, heat the screw head with a hot air gun, then the turn screw a little TIGHTER, before undoing (use caution with heat if the object has a varnished or painted finish). • Age marks on porcelain can be removed by soaking overnight in baby bottle sterilizing liquid. • Use Steradent tablets to get rid of water marks in old glass vases. • For a bright shine, polish chrome with baby oil and cotton wool. • To clean a gilded object, use a clean white cotton cloth, cotton balls or Q-tips, and the barest amount of clean, cool water. After you have dampened the cleaning material, remove excess moisture on a dry piece of cloth before you apply it. • Rub undiluted household bleach into dirty hairline cracks in pottery and rinse off,

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

to reduce the crack’s visibility. • Use half a lemon and salt to clean brass and copper items. Apply, rinse off, dry carefully and clean with impregnated wadding, polishing finally with a soft cloth. • To repair a pottery item, clean the pieces with a mixture of mild dishwashing liquid and warm water and let them dry completely. Apply clear, slowsetting two part epoxy glue and hold the pieces in place with modelling clay so they don’t fall apart whilst drying. • Remove dust and dirty marks on old leather by dipping an artist’s paintbrush in methylated spirits. Use sparingly, working on a small area at a time. Whenever you carry out a restoration project, you should decide whether you want to keep the item or sell it on before you get started. If you want to keep it, you can restore it to your personal taste. If you’re selling, it’s wise to do some research on the current market before you start restoration. Although it may seem strange, some buyers may actually want the rust stains and marks of use that show an item has been handled and loved for many years. Page 41

Beef Stew

with Horseradish Dumplings Ready in 3 hours 30 minutes

Serves 4

This is a traditional and warming casserole which is ideal to serve to the family during the chilly winter months. Serve with steamed green vegetables such as broccoli, Savoy cabbage or green beans.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1kg braising steak, cut into chunks 2 tbsp seasoned flour 3 tbsp sunflower oil 2 large onions, peeled and sliced 300ml Guinness 450ml beef stock 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3 large carrots, peeled and sliced 2 sprigs fresh thyme 2 bay leaves FOR THE DUMPLINGS 75g self-raising flour 40g shredded suet 1 tsp grated horseradish 1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley

TIP

If you don’t want to serve this stew with dumplings, try topping with sliced potatoes instead. Arrange 3 large peeled and thinly sliced potatoes in concentric circles on top of the stew after 2 hours cooking time. Season well and dot with butter. Return to the oven, uncovered, and cook for a further 1- 1 hours until both meat and potatoes are tender.

Page 42

Preheat the oven to 170C, 325F, Gas 3. Place the meat and seasoned flour in a large plastic freezer bag. Seal the bag and shake well, until the meat is coated in the flour. Heat half the oil in a large frying pan and brown the meat in small batches, over a high heat. Add more oil if necessary. Transfer the meat to a large casserole dish. Add the remaining oil to the pan and fry the onions for 5 minutes. Pour in the Guinness, stock and Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil. Pour the liquid and onions over the meat and add the carrots, thyme sprigs and bay leaves. Cover and cook for about 3 hours until the meat is tender, stirring once. To make the dumplings, place the flour, suet, horseradish and parsley in a large bowl. Season with half a teaspoon of salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper, then stir in enough cold water to mix to a soft dough. Using lightly floured hands, divide and shape into 8 dumplings.

5 Uncover the stew and gently sit the dumplings on top of the meat. Cover and cook for a further 20 minutes until the dumplings are fluffy and risen. Serve sprinkled with extra freshly ground black pepper.

Windfall shared with Gloucester church St Margaret’s Church in Whaddon is a little bit richer thanks to a donation from two women following the sale of their family home. Vicki Hernon and Helen Gage decided to make their gift after taking advantage of a ‘no fees’ introductory offer from local estate agent TwoCan when they sold the bungalow last year. Grateful for saving hundreds of pounds in agency fees, they thought they would share their good fortune with the church “that has been at the heart of our family since we came to live in Tuffley more than 50 years ago”. At the end of January, Vicki, Helen and TwoCan Senior Negotiator Andrew Heard met Hans Rackham, Treasurer at St Margaret’s Church to present him with a cheque for £200, which will go towards the £150,000 appeal to replace the church roof. Vicki’s grandparents, Bertie Osmond

and Mary Bullard, were among the first people to move to the newly-built Grange estate in Tuffley when they bought 2 Windsor Drive in 1962. They passed it on to their daughter and son-inlaw in 1980, and it remained in the family until 2015. Now the bungalow has been bought by a Tredworth couple, and Vicki and Helen want to pass on the history of the home and some memories of their grandparents to the new owners. “This was the first house they ever bought,” explained Vicki. “I assume they must have paid for it out-right as Bertie retired in 1963 having completed 38 years of service with the Post Office. “Helen and I lived there with our parents Beryl and Lionel Chiswell. They were active members of many Tuffley clubs and societies as well as the church, and they are both now buried in the churchyard at St Margaret’s. “We saved money by selling the bungalow through TwoCan and it felt like a fitting tribute to donate some of that to the local church in memory of our parents.” Vicki and Helen found the original marketing details for the

TwoCan was recently named by raterAgent as Gloucestershire’s Agent of the Year. Senior Negotiator, Andrew Heard, said: “The history is one of the great things about buying a second-hand home and it was really interesting to see the original documents and to learn something of the families that lived there. “Vicki and Helen’s family clearly had strong connections with Tuffley and it’s a lovely gesture to donate some of the money they saved through TwoCan to the church, which obviously meant a great deal to their parents, and where Lionel was Churchwarden between 1999 and 2004.” TwoCan is a property sales, lettings and management agency, combining a highly professional and competitivelypriced service with a unique ethical ‘profit-for-purpose’ approach to doing business. It was recently named ‘Gloucestershire Agent of the Year’ by independent review site raterAgent. TwoCan is owned by Newentbased Two Rivers Housing charity and every penny made in profit is gifted to support its work.

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning of its surroundings. Even the fact that Jodrell Bank intercepted the signals and the Daily Express published the pictures before Pravda could didn’t spoil the party.

There were glasses raised in jubilation in Moscow and drained in frustration in Washington on February 3rd 1966, when the Soviets demonstrated once again that they were well ahead in the space race. They had been ahead from the beginning, of course: Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite, blasted off on October 4th 1957, to be followed by Sputnik 2 a month later, whereas the Americans couldn’t launch Explorer 1 until January 31st 1958. On April 12th 1961 Yuri Gagarin pipped Alan Shepherd by only 23 days to be the first man in space, and the Soviets rubbed it in by being the first to orbit the earth, having the first woman in space, and completing the first spacewalk. Now they were ahead in the race for the Moon, too, the race that President Kennedy had declared that America must win within the decade. But after a flawless launch and three-day flight, Luna 9 touched down gently on the rocky floor of Oceanus Procellarum, extended its camera array, and started making a complete panorama Page 46

It was the first successful rocketassisted controlled landing on the Moon, and the extent of the Soviet lead was only confirmed on February 21st when the American probe Ranger 8 crashed; but the lead was less solid than it seemed, and it evaporated for good on February 26th with America’s first successful Saturn rocket launch. Actually, the Americans had had the lead all along but didn’t know it. After the war they had more or less kidnapped Germany’s V2 team and its director, Werner von Braun, but for five years the Germans were only allowed to supervise the completion of captured V2s and train the Americans in their use. In 1950 the military sacked von Braun and packed him off to the Marshall Space Flight Centre in Alabama where he could dream his intergalactic dreams in peace while the US Navy worked on its main project, the Vanguard missile launch vehicle – a task in which it failed. Only when Sputnik was launched did Washington realise that Moscow now had a viable missile delivery system and it didn’t. Then someone remembered that

rather embarrassing ex-Nazi in Alabama. Maybe von Braun had something the military could use? He had. His Redstone rocket was originally intended as the launcher for Explorer, but in 1955 Eisenhower had decided to use Vanguard instead. Now the military turned back to Redstone. Explorer was hastily adapted to fit its new launcher, and the US was back in the game. So was von Braun. Vanguard was scrapped and the development dollars went his way instead. His giant Saturn rocket that would take America to the Moon had its first launch only weeks after Luna 9’s triumph. Meanwhile the Russians were dividing their resources between two new launch vehicles, N1 and Proton. But N1’s designer, Sergei Korolev, died suddenly in January 1966 and the project faltered. Proton wasn’t ready either, and when Apollo 8 became the first manned lunar orbiter on Christmas Eve 1968, the heart went out of the Russian effort and after four failed attempts to launch N1 they gave up. The Soviet moon-shot was suspended in 1974 – two years after the last American had walked on the Moon – and scrapped in 1976.

Living Room On Wheels There is a subtle but definite shift going on in the way people use and drive their cars. Aids such as lane departure warning, self parking, adaptive cruise control and emergency stop systems are there to make the journey safer. But you’ll also see options in the brochures under the pseudonym of “comfort” or “leisure packs”; Bluetooth phone connectivity, in-car wi-fi and internet radio. On average it takes five years for a model to go from drawing board to front drive, so by 2020 expect the family hatchback to be not simply a means of transportation but a place of relaxation too. It’s recognised that we are spending longer in our cars, so the makers are moving towards the car being as much a living as a driving space.

Driverless technology is here already, albeit just past the embryonic stage. Soon we will see accident prevention systems as standard including innovative methods to control the car (steering wheels will seem very last year). Also we are likely to find the car thinking for itself, making route choices and driving decisions for you based upon external data, not just from the internet but in the immediate space that surrounds it. All sounds a bit “Joe 90”? After all, didn’t those sci-fi comics of the 1960’s have us all driving auto hover-cars, dressed in two-piece, one-colour leisure suits by now? Well, the 2015 Tokyo motor show saw concept cars with these features from Nissan and Mercedes, the latter being vigorous innovators in the motoring world. Mercedes were first to bring you such things as brakes on all 4 wheels (yes really!), fuel injection, traction control and airbags. Still, they have yet to introduce a range of one-colour two-piece leisure suits. By Iain Betson

How to Look after Your Dog’s Paws

When caring for your dog, it’s easy to overlook their paws unless they are limping, but it’s important to make sure that nothing gets lodged in their pads or stuck in the ‘web’ between their toes. It’s an easy routine though, and consists of just three steps: • Checking regularly for signs of damage or soreness Although puncture wounds may not be immediately visible because of the dark colour of your dog’s pads, if anything has caused damage the dog will pull away or show signs of discomfort when you touch their feet. Regular checks after each outing will help to prevent infection building up in broken skin, and identify damaged or split claws. • Bathing To flush out any sand or small objects, dip each paw into a shallow container of water and pat dry. Sand in particular causes discomfort if not removed after a walk on the beach, and sharp shells can easily cut the paws. • Keep fur trimmed This is especially important for long-haired breeds with lots of fur between their pads. Keeping it short allows you to see any damage to the paw, and makes the dog more comfortable when walking. You can buy special creams and waxes to protect your dog’s paws from harsh winter weather, and also from becoming blistered in the summer heat. A damaged paw will put a halt to their activities and can mean an expensive visit to the vet, so prevention is certainly cheaper than cure. http://uk.pedigree.com/healthand-training/caring-for-your-dog/ looking-after-your-puppys-paws http://theilovedogssite.com/5-mustknow-tips-for-taking-care-of-yourdogs-paws/ By Ann Haldon

how Microchipping Matters Nosmallmatter or large, they be tracked with 20% discount offer can a microchip! Hardly a day goes by when we don’t have a pet that is presented at the surgery who has gone missing and has been handed in by a kind member of the public.

Only a few weeks ago we had a member of public come in with a lost Great Dane. We were surprised someone could lose such a large dog but we scanned his chip and phoned the owners. The owners had let him out for 5 minutes and he had wandered off without them noticing. We checked him over and kept him in a kennel until he was reunited with his owners within three hours. This fortunately is a typical story as more pets are microchipped these days which makes it easier to reunite them. The same is true for cats, who should also be microchipped as they sometimes go missing or get into vehicles and end up a long way from home - totally untraceable without a microchip!

A microchip is a capsule about the same size as a grain of rice that carries a unique identification number. It is implanted under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades in dogs and cats. Implanting the microchip should hurt no more than a routine injection and once microchipped your pet has a traceable form of ID should they escape, get lost, or be stolen. After your pet is microchipped, the details will be registered with a Lost and Found Pet Service. If the worst happens and your pet goes missing, it is very likely that they will be taken to a local vets, picked up by the animal warden, or handed in to one of the animal rescue organisations. These places are equipped with special scanners which can read the lost pet’s unique microchip number and this will

enable them to find your details 24/7, 365 days of the year. You can then be contacted directly so they can reunite you with your missing pet. As part of Leadon Vale’s ongoing commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership, have your pet microchipped with us until 6th April and you will receive a 20% discount off the normal price if you bring this advert along to the appointment with you. From the 6th of April 2016, all dogs must be microchipped and registered by law to an approved database by the time they are 8 weeks old.

Local hospice on look-out for fundraising volunteers across Gloucestershire Local hospice charity, Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court, is seeking community fundraising volunteers from right across Gloucestershire to get involved and help it raise the £1.6 million it needs every year to provide care for local families. The hospice has created some brand new volunteer roles including fundraising collection volunteers and collection tin coordinators, for anyone who can join them to help. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to become a Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Community fundraising volunteer wherever they live across Gloucestershire, no matter how many hours they can volunteer. Each of the roles are flexible and fulfilling. Fundraising collection volunteers will help with collections in stores in and around Gloucestershire and help the local charity to seek opportunities to promote the

Page 56

hospice and the incredible work it does. There is a particular need for this in Gloucester and Cirencester. The role of collection tin coordinator will help with the distribution of collection tins in a given area – a vital stream of income for the hospice. There is also a vacancy for a fundraising administrator working alongside the team based at the hospice assisting with research, handling donations and general admin duties around events and projects. The volunteer must be able to commit to a weekday within office hours on a weekly basis working at the Cheltenham-based hospice. Mike Tague, Head of Hospice Fundraising at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We can only raise the money needed to carry on providing care for local families at a time they need it most with the support of

the very communities we care for.” “We have an incredibly loyal and hardworking army of volunteers but we need more volunteers in local communities right across the county if we are to raise the £1.6 million needed every year to help run our inpatient unit, day hospice and hospice at home services.” “These new roles will help more people flexibly volunteer with us. No matter how many hours you have to offer and no matter where you live, from Gloucester to Cheltenham, from Stroud to Cirencester or from the Forest of Dean to Tewkesbury or anywhere in between you can get involved and help support our work, right in the heart of your local community.” Anyone interested in becoming a fundraising volunteer for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice can call Beth Davis on 01242 246285 or email beth. davis@suerydercare.org.

Pauntley Friends offer a helping hand

Pauntley Primary School is very lucky to have a very active PTA, known as “The Friends”. They have just paid for all the children to have a Christmas treat - a visit to the “Beauty and the Beast” pantomime in Hereford. Over the last year The Friends have also refurbished the rear of the school buildings to create an outdoor classroom with picnic tables and created a natural amphitheatre for performances and lessons. In addition, The Friends contribute to extra-curricular activities. In the last term, for example, the Infants class had a visit from a rather large snake as part of their learning about wildlife, and the Junior class have been receiving ukulele lessons. These are all paid for by the fund-raising activities held throughout the year, which include discos, sponsored runs, cake sales and the annual Summer Fayre and Christmas Bazaar. The Friends are thankful for all the support from the parents, grandparents, staff and all local businesses and neighbours who help with raffle prizes and donations, raising over £4,000 through the last year. This term the Infants are enjoying cooking with their new play kitchen donated by The Friends, and after a few years of successful fund-raising the next big

project is the refurbishment of the school library, which is due to undergo a facelift this term, with new shelving and new books. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. If you would like to visit our school in action, you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward at Pauntley School office on 01531 820053. E: admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk W: www.pauntleyschool.com

Thank you Newent from Gloucester City Mission (GCM) On the cold morning of Saturday 5th December 2015, a small group of Christians from Glebe Chapel hosted a coffee morning under the Market House in Newent. Coffee/teas/ cold drinks together with mince pies were offered free but with a request for a small voluntary donation of woolly hats, gloves, scarves, etc and food such as Pot Noodles that could be eaten with the addition of hot water. The food and clothing was destined to be distributed by

volunteers of the Gloucester City Mission in Christmas hampers to the ‘homeless’ at their annual Christmas Carol service at Park Street Mission Hall on Wednesday 16th December 2015. The response of the people of Newent was tremendous and the food/clothing given, when added to donations from around Gloucester, resulted in over 300 hampers being distributed. In addition to the food/clothing donated by Newent residents, over

£70 in cash was also given. This will be used in purchasing food that is distributed on a weekly basis at our ‘drop-in’ centre and also taken out to people on the city streets. All at Gloucester City Mission wish to place on record our sincere thanks to members of Glebe Chapel and the residents of Newent for their wonderful generosity towards those who have very little or nothing at all. We wish you all a very happy and peaceful 2016. - Arthur and Sylvia Lowe, Missioners GCM Page 59

Finance Is Buy-to-Let Still a Good Investment? By Ann Haldon

With no sign of improved interest rates for savers, and pension changes that offer more freedom, is buy-to-let still a good option for those wanting to invest? At first glance, the increase in stamp duty and reduction in some tax reliefs for landlords may cast doubt on whether investing in bricksand-mortar is a good idea, but success depends on many factors, not least of which is your commitment to maximising returns. We take a look at what you need to consider when thinking about property investment. One of the first items on the list should be to clarify your motivation for this type of investment, as it will directly impact on the areas and type of property that you choose. Do you want rental yield or long-term capital growth? Are you considering a longterm investment to take advantage of capital growth, or focusing on the potential rental yield of a property? Between 15 and 20 years is a common timescale for property ownership with capital growth in mind, which might fit in nicely Page 60

with your plans for retirement. On the other hand, investing in a multiple-occupancy student let, for example, could bring in much-needed monthly income. You may be able to make a rental yield of between 5% and 10% if you find a suitable property in a good location, and buy it for the right price. Whether you choose capital growth or rental yield will determine which type of property you buy, so it is worthwhile spending plenty of time considering your end-goal. Focusing on the figures Buy-to-let can still be a good investment if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it work. This begins with meticulous research to make sure you get the best mortgage deal, find suitable locations and the right style of property for your target market. In other words, you need to make sure as far as possible that the numbers add up. Lending restrictions have made it difficult to find a good mortgage deal in recent years, when compared with the precredit crunch era, but even when you’ve got a mortgage

offer that you’re happy with, you should be constantly looking for ways to improve returns by switching suppliers and cutting costs. It’s likely that your mortgage provider will need 125% of the monthly rental by way of repayment. The extra amount is intended to cover some of the costs of renting out, and provides a degree of reassurance to the lender that their money is safe. Their worry (and yours) is that the property could stand empty for some time, but unfortunately this is one of the inherent risks of being a buy-to-let landlord. Will you manage the property yourself? Many professional landlords concentrate purely on managing their business. They don’t get involved in the monthto-month management of the property, or dealing with tenant issues – in fact, many landlords never even meet their tenants. It’s purely a numbers game, and taking this approach means abandoning any personal preferences with regard to choosing your property.

To advertise call 07939 802 384 or 01531 805000 or visit www.newentmagazine.co.uk.

If you decide to hire a letting agent, they will take a percentage of the rent by way of payment. This may seem like a needless expense when you’re willing to do the work yourself, but when you consider how much time and energy is saved in not having to deal with tenant issues it may be money well spent, particularly if you have more than one property. The inherent risks of buyto-let Any form of investment is a risk, but with buy-to-let one of the inherent problems is not finding a tenant, or having to deal with troublesome occupants who damage your property. Having it standing empty will impact severely on returns over the lifetime of your investment,

and you may need to take a reduction in rent to contain some of these losses. It’s also easy for costs to spiral, particularly if the property is old and repairs are needed on a regular basis. Other risks include increases in mortgage interest rates, and the property market in general taking a downward turn. Financial benefits of buyto-let The beneficial tax reliefs enjoyed on buy-to-let mortgage interest payments are now being limited to the basic rate of income tax. This was previously an attractive part of buy-to-let investing, but they can still be enjoyed if you form a limited company for your property investments. As rates of corporation tax

are being reduced to 18% by 2020, for owners of multiple properties at least, this could help to reduce costs. But as always, you need to seek the advice of a professional advisor to maximise the investment returns and minimise your tax bill. It is said that you make your profit when the property is bought rather than when it is sold, so researching the market, understanding the figures, and finding the best buy-to-let mortgage deal will be time well spent. Buying a rental property isn’t the easy option but the rewards are there if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it pay. http://moneyfacts.co.uk/ guides/buy-to-let/btl-have-youconsidered-the-investment-risks/

Two Months, Three Celebrations 9th February – Shrove Tuesday PANCAKES! So easy to make and enjoy - flour, eggs and milk, the batter poured into a frying pan...that’s the easy part! Now comes the difficult, and sometimes messy, part: flipping them over...I’m afraid I take no chances and use a spatula. Sorry, but I don’t like having to clear up before I eat! Good old lemon juice and sugar is my favourite filling, followed by:

POACHED BLUEBERRIES 1. Place 100g caster sugar, some cold water and a squirt of lemon juice in a saucepan. 2. Dissolve the sugar on a a low heat. 3. Add 300g blueberries to the sugar mixture, bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

to love this time of year! Well, if you’re a chocolate fanatic, you will. I like spring, the garden starts to join in - buds on branches, shoots pushing through the earth and the early spring flowers brining a splash of bright colours. Baking involves lots of marzipan for Simnel cakes, and the making of sugarpaste daffodils, tulips, primulas and blossom.

Pour over stack of pancakes and indulge... yum yum! 14th February – Valentine’s Day I get quite a few orders for this day and bake quite a lot of chocolate cupcakes covered in hearts of various shades of red and pink. It’s chocolate, what else is there to say! 27th March – Easter Sunday Another chocolate celebration. You have Page 62

‘Ladies Day’ by Amanda Whittington, a production by Highnam Players

Rotary working in partnership with Highnam Players Highnam Players Drama Group produced a play entitled ‘Ladies Day’ by Amanda Whittington at the Parish Rooms in Highnam from 25th to 28th November 2015. It was a brilliant production and they kindly allocated the ticket money from the Wednesday performance, together with a bucket collection on all other evenings to the Rotary Organisation. Whilst our Newent Club decided to support the ‘Cystic Fibrosis Trust’ charity,

David Ginman (Chairman, Highnam Players), Moira Coats(Director, Highnam Players) & Paddy Roche (Secretary, Newent Rotary) at the cheque presentation at Gloucester Rugby Club. Page 68

Rotary@Kingsholm club supported the ‘Alzheimer’s Society’. Rotary would like to thank Highnam Players for their kind and generous offer, which raised a total of £1260, and was split between the two Rotary charities.

Rotary brings Father Christmas to Newent and Highnam Again this year, the Club arranged for Father Christmas to visit the streets of Newent and Highnam. He came on his sleigh over four nights in mid December and was thrilled to meet all the lovely children. Whilst carols played out, Rotary members ‘bucket collected’ from homes where the kind and generous community donated over £1,700 which will be donated to local children and other Rotary charities. Thank you once again for your brilliant support of our annual festive collection.

Rotary Membership The Club is actively looking for new members, particularly from the younger sector, who would be interested in assisting us in our many charitable community projects and events. The Club meets weekly on Tuesdays at The Red Lion in Newent, 6.45pm for 7pm dinner, at which we have all types of interesting speakers, or often just social evenings. Members are not committed to attending every week, but the varied and exciting activities and events will ensure you enjoy fellowship and meet new friends. Please contact our Secretary on 07794 644 380 or email rochehighnam@ btinternet.com if you would like to make further enquiries, thank you.

Rotary acknowledgement The Club would like to acknowledge and thank Evelyn and Clive Perry for their most generous donation to our Christmas charity, in memory of their lovely Daughter Heather, who would have been 45 on 13th Dec 2015.

Father Christmas meets the children on his street sleigh visit to Newent and Highnam.
