Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, It’s that time of the year again, with schools out for Summer! Six weeks of wondering what we can do to keep the children happy and entertained… fortunately we have a great What’s On section for you towards the back of this magazine for some ideas of days out and events – and keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we’ll be adding more as they come in to us. July in Newent sees the judging of the summer gardens competition, when those with green fingers nervously await the judging which starts on the 7th of July, followed by the Newent in Bloom window competition being judged on the 15th of July. We are also hoping for a day (or 2 hours at least!) of sunshine on Sunday 10th because it’s time to pack the picnic, shake the cobwebs off the picnic rug, and dust down those chairs for a lovely afternoon in the sun listening to the brass band music being played by Gloucester’s Salvation Army performing an open air concert at the lakes between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Finally, on a personal note, I would like to congratulate everyone who last month became part of the “Pink Army” and took part in Race for Life in Gloucester or Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean where themed fancy dress became the order of the day! Ladies, you did everyone proud. I hope you have a fun, busy but also relaxing July, until next month! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for Motivational Management - Use the Power of Praise Every recruitment agency in the land will agree that by far the major reason for people leaving an employer is due to not feeling appreciated or valued. Let me remind you of that powerful phrase, “people don’t leave companies, they leave people.” I equally believe, and my experience has shown, that this lack of appreciation is one of the major causes of high absenteeism that some in the private sector, but many more in the public sector, do suffer from. Why are so many managers unable, unwilling or simply forget to say a thank you and show appreciation to their staff? It’s just not good enough to have the pathetic mindset of believing “that is what they are paid to do.” This lack of appreciation is very rarely uncovered or disclosed at the exit interview. Apparently the British psyche does not handle praise well. But praise and recognition are fundamental and vital leadership skills and qualities. So if you want to keep your people, staff and colleagues; help them to be more competent; increase productivity and create a happier working environment; positive constructive input and loyalty; praise and care for your staff. After all, they are your customers, so follow these tips: 1. Praise in public, criticise in private. Let other people hear you giving praise. You will get more of whatever you recognise, reward or praise. 2. Understand the individual. Some people need more praise than others. Some people have great difficulty in receiving praise. 3. Be authentic. The praise must be yours even though it may have been told to you by someone else. It must be owned by you and believed by you. If the praiseworthy event is related to you from another source get your facts right, but again take

ownership of the praise, while giving recognition to others. 4. Deliver praise with sincerity, with eye contact, with pleasure and with happiness. You know body language communicates more powerfully than the spoken word. 5. Be timely. Yes, of course some praise is better late than never but really make the effort to give it as near to the event as is humanly possible. It just depends on where praise lies in your priority of life. 6. The recipient really must deserve the praise and the event must also be praiseworthy. 7. Praise should also be geared to the impact of the actions that were deserved. In other words, you are sharing the ramifications of the success that is forthcoming from the praiseworthy activity. 8. Praise will change behaviour, meaning you will get more of whatever you are praising and recognising, so be careful. If you praise people for working long hours you will get more people working long hours, but this may not be productive and is generally unproductive. 9. Get the balance right. Too much praise is completely ineffective. Can you recall old Mr Grace from the TV programme Are You Being Served saying “You are all doing very well”, every time he met his staff. 10. Be brave. Step outside your comfort zone. Give a little praise and enjoy.

Local Newent artist, Belinda Morgan, paints Ledbury’s favourite street picture Last month, Ledbury Art Society held a small (but beautifully formed) exhibition entitled ‘In and Around Ledbury’ for Ledbury Community Day. It included twelve pictures which ranged from a portrait of the much treasured local Town-crier, Bill the Bell, through Ledbury street scenes to the Malvern Hills, all portrayed in a variety of art mediums. Over two hours an amazing 120 people voted for their ‘favourite picture’. All twelve pictures received at least a flurry of votes each, which shows how many different preferences there were. Many people have asked since “Which was the favourite overall?” So here is the answer: Ledbury Market House, Belinda Morgan Watercolour,15cm x 20cm

Step 3: Then check insurers that comparison sites miss

In a recent poll I did, 78% of customers who haggled with Direct Line said they had success, while 81% did with Admiral and 80% with Hastings Direct. So it’s worth a try.

Now you’ve a price benchmark, let’s try to smash it. Big insurers www.Aviva.co.uk and www. DirectLine.com are not included by comparison sites, so check them too.

Comparison sites also tend to miss out special promo deals that insurers offer, so it’s worth checkoversing your out if there are any of these as , which well. As Pat Olver tweeted me: “@ MartinSlewis Sainsbury’s home insurance renewal £252. Same policy on confused was £186. Rang Sainsbury’s, talked them down to £181.” Step 5: If you’re moving, once you know what you’re getting, check for cashback Once you know your cheapest policy and, crucially, you’ve checked IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, then see if you can earn cashback using a cashback site such as www.Topcashback.co.uk or www. Quidco.com. These sites pay you if you click through them.

This usually works, but there can be tracking issues, so see this as a likely added bonus and always check ensure you’re getting the right policy. If you’ve got time and your top three policies are all much of a muchness, it can be worth seeing the cashback on offer for all three. And a final word of warning, beware paying monthly, it’s actually just a loan. In effect, the insurer pays upfront then loans you the cash, sometimes at hideous interest (e.g., Endsleigh’s 39.7% APR). If you can’t afford to pay upfront, check the APR. If it’s high, you’re often better on your credit card, or, better still, get a 0% credit card (just ensure you pay it off within the year). Steam in the Malvern Hills

WELLAND STEAM & COUNTRY RALLY July 29, 30 & 31 2016

If you are looking for the perfect day out for the family this summer, look no further than the Worcestershire village of Welland, which hosts the annual Steam and Country Rally. Welland is situated between Malvern and Uptonupon-Severn with easy access to the M50. The postcode for Sat Navs is WR13 6NG. 2016 sees the 52nd event and the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the rally will be up to the usual high standard. The event is organised by the Ross-onWye Steam Engine Society, whose members give all their time voluntarily to put on what is now regarded one of the biggest and best events of its type in the country. A mixture of nostalgia, sights, sounds and a terrific atmosphere await you at Welland. The event is special in that you can see steam engines performing the tasks they were built for in the years leading up to the Second World War. Ploughing, threshing, timber sawing, etc. will all be undertaken by preserved steam traction engines. The rally boasts a traditional old time fairground where many of the rides will be powered and lit by magnificent Showman’s road locomotives. There is a large working field where you can see not only steam ploughing but also

vintage tractors at work. Corn is threshed by steam power and steam-powered saws convert tree trunks into planks after being lifted into position by a rail-mounted steam crane. Amongst rural crafts being demonstrated are dry stone walling, blacksmithing, fence making and wood sculpture. First seen three years ago is the Great Welland Railway. This is a length of standard gauge railway with a full sized steam locomotive giving demonstrations – something you won’t see at many shows! Welland boasts magnificent displays of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, historic military vehicles, tractors and stationary oil engines. Each day the exhibits take part in parades in the grand arena. Other events include races between traction engines, children’s tug of war, military vehicle demonstrations, and much more. Music is important, and wherever you go on the ground you will never be far from fairground organs or brass bands and don’t miss the Cancan dancers giving performances during each day. If you have never seen tractor pulling, be prepared to be amazed as specially built machines compete to see who can pull the weighted sledge the farthest.

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

If you are in the market for a traction engine, vintage tractor or anything in that line, you may find it in the annual vintage auction sale which takes place on the Friday of the rally. All this plus models, radio controlled model trucks, crafts and Farmers’ Market, hundreds of trade stands, trailer rides by steam power, entertainment from the world renowned Van Buren magic show, Emma Puddy’s aerial acrobatics display and an excellent range of refreshments including a bar with real ale, awaits you at this fantastic weekend. With the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills you will have a day out to be remembered for a long, long time. To avoid queues at the gates advance tickets are now available via the website: www.wellandsteamrally.co.uk So come along to Welland on the weekend of July 29th - 31st, you certainly won’t be disappointed! Note: there is free admission for all children under 11 years of age and ATM facilities on site.

Auction Anecdote Sometimes an item can sell surprisingly well at auction with little or no clue beforehand that the price is going to run away on the day. This was the case at Smiths sale on the 10th June when lot 5, an unusual 18th century Chinese plate with blue and red floral decoration (and a number of chips to the rim), suddenly started rising in price on the internet after a hesitant start. Obviously the secretive buyers had all been hoping to keep its true potential quiet - but in the end it made an exciting start to the day with a final price of £1,400. In total contrast to this the highest priced lot of the day was immediately seized upon by collectors as soon as the catalogue went online. The item in question was a handsome late Victorian mahogany cabinet of twenty-five drawers containing biological microscope slides. It turned out that although the cabinet itself was very desirable, the rare collection of slides held within were the real attraction. The slides were all neatly labelled in pen and contained specimens of animals and plants such as spiders, caterpillars as well as lots of interesting oddities such as ‘Web of a bull frog’ and ‘Bone of a python’. Interest came from the internet as well as via the telephone, and a large number of requests were made for extra images. After condition reports and photographs of all three hundred plus slides had been sent off - it was obvious this was going to be the big item of the day. In the end the auctioneers were not disappointed – a bidder in the room who had left home at 3am in the morning to make the long journey to Newent triumphed against another very determined bidder on the telephone. However the atmosphere in the saleroom was rather tense as the poor buyer looked visibly shaken by the final price he had to pay of £4,500. In the end he seemed very happy with his purchase and after a quick trip to the bank he paid by cash and set off on the journey home with a cheery smile and of course his precious cabinet tucked under his arm. Smiths next sale is on the 15th July and includes a full range of antiques and collectables as well as special sections for coins, notes and postcards. Entries for the 2nd September sale which includes a special section for oriental items are invited on the 9th, 11th, 16th & 18th August. MR SHAMBLES’ JULY MEWS Well, it’s all go in The Shambles again, I can hardly keep up! Enchanted has moved! They can now be found in between Erol’s and The Shambles Charity Shop on Church Street. It’s still part of The Shambles so I can still wander in and say hello. Their range of aromatherapy oils are expanding and lots of gifts and quirky items are already flying out of the shop. I believe they will be expanding their range even more and having more readers in. Watch this space! The Gallery @ The Shambles has a very special (well, I think so anyway) piece of artwork in – it’s a quite wonderful painting of ME! I think it’s like looking in a mirror... it’s very good, and prints are available as well so you can have me immortalised in your house. I know that my fan club will be delighted! The Gallery will be having brand new works in soon and will open its doors as part of the Forest Valley Open Studios between the 9th and 26th July. Don’t forget to pop in on your Newent wanderings! laser, from cellulite to hair and even tattoo removal. She’s extremely adept! Pop in and have a chat, she’s lovely! Spa Vapes have expert advice on how to stop smoking and Andrew is always happy to help. They have everything from start up starter kits (£20 with free 10ml bottle of juice) to ‘pro vaping’ equipment. I have heard that you can even have check-ins to discuss how you are getting on and to receive advise. I have also spied a Jack Russell pup in there, who some people apparently say is cuter than me... but I can’t see it myself! Make sure you visit their website: www.spavapes.co.uk. Old Nicks Tattoo Studio is working almost flat out, although they do occasionally have walk-in spots. You can even give a tattoo as a present to your loved ones by purchasing an Owcher. Old Nicks is open from 12 noon until 6pm Tuesday to Saturday and you can book a consultation or a tattoo by phoning them on 01531 820023 during opening hours... or simply drop in for a chat about what you’d like. Nik and Dee have years and years of experience and are both fantastic artists in their own rights.

Mal at Survival Supplies UK has been making the local anglers happy since the fishing season started on the 16th. Every time I wander in he’s got more and more fishing kit. In fact, he’s always got more of everything. Paracord in an increasing variety of colours, fire starters and cooking stuff, torches and batteries, an ever expanding range of stunning bush knives and machetes, bags, pouches, rucksacks and he’s even selling camouflage clothing now. He also recently told me that the demand for air rifles and pistols (mainly for shooting those pesky rats) has led to him applying for a licence to sell them. Don’t forget the Farmer’s Market on 2nd July! I can’t wait to see if I can get something lovely for Mrs Shambles!

Health

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Growing Up, Not Growing Out: Childhood Obesity

Most parents would say their child’s health and life expectancy is vitally important. Yet nearly a third of all children in the UK are overweight or obese, potentially jeopardising their health and shortening their lifespan. Last year Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, warned that “[poor diets] and couch potato lifestyles are normalising obesity and as parents, a third of us can’t now spot when our own child is seriously overweight”. National Childhood Obesity Week, running from 4th-10th July, aims to raise awareness of this escalating problem. The Scale and Dangers of Childhood Obesity The 2014 Public Health Survey for England identified 31.2% of 2-15 year olds as overweight or obese. The 2014/15 National Child Measurement identified 19.1% of Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as obese and 14.2% as overweight, while 9.1% of Reception children (aged 45) were already obese, with another 12.8% overweight. ‘Puppy fat’ that children ‘grow out of’ is a potentially dangerous myth. Obese children often grow into obese adults, increasing their risk of developing insulin resistance, premature onset of diabetes and heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Page 20

disability, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis) and some cancers. Dr Sania Nishtar, Co-Chair of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, warns of obesity’s “impact on educational attainment” and “physical, psychological and health consequences”. Tackling the Problem • The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) provides data to help the government understand and tackle children’s weight issues and aims to engage with families about healthy lifestyles and weight issues. Trained healthcare professionals measure the height and weight of Reception and Year 6 children annually and calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI) centile. • Initiatives such as Change4Life provide straightforward information about healthy family lifestyles. • The Sugar Tax may be controversial, but government research shows that if we halved the sugar in soft drinks, average sugar consumption would decrease significantly, particularly in 10-19 year olds. Dropping the nation’s sugar intake to recommended levels within 10 years would avoid 4,000 early deaths and save the NHS £480 million a year. What Parents Can Do: • Give them the best start. Exclusively breastfeeding babies until 6 months significantly reduces their risk of obesity. • Reduce Their Sitting Time. Prolonged sitting damages

health, even in people who exercise regularly. Keep binge-watching sessions to a minimum and break them up with bursts of activity. • Increase Their Physical Activity. This needn’t be team sports or gym sessions. Walking or cycling to school (even part way), playground trips, countryside walks, gardening, kicking a football around, swimming, indoor snowboarding, playing tag or fitness videogames all provide great exercise. • Ensure They Get Enough Sleep. Lack of sleep can affect appetite-stimulating hormones, as well as negatively affecting memory, concentration, immunity and mental and physical health. • Improve Their Diet > Reduce sugar. Beware hidden sugars in sauces and cereals, cut out sugary drinks, and gradually wean them off adding sugar to cereals or drinks. > Provide Five a Day. Any form of fruit or vegetables will do, but ration juices, as these contain ‘free’ sugars just as sugary drinks do. > Keep Portion Sizes Small for younger children. > Monitor Pocket Money Spending to ensure it isn’t spent on junk food and sweets.

Finally, Set a Good Example. Spending your free time in front of the TV eating unhealthy snacks makes it hard to persuade your child that following suit could damage their health. For more information, visit: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ Childhealth6-15 http://www.nhs.uk/change4life

Sheppard House Update As part of Volunteer's Week we held a dinner at Sheppard House in June to which all volunteers were invited. Almost 50 volunteers attended and were waited on by staff. Certificates were awarded for five, ten, fifteen and twenty years of service. In addition, a thank you bunch of flowers was given to Betty Woods on her retirement after 22 years of service. The trip to Weston was very much enjoyed by the clients and carers. The weather made all the difference as it was a brilliant sun-filled day.

The clients have been busy planting the raised beds with vegetables and strawberries. There has been daily picking and eating of the produce too! We also arranged a bed of flowers in red, white and blue to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday. Once again we had a varied month of activities with the main ones being all things Royal. All of the clients had a go at making Desert Island Discs and it has been really interesting finding out their likes, dislikes and what luxury item they would take with them. To finish off the month we held a Tea Party which was open to all. There was a sumptuous tea and the Lydney Band serenaded us all afternoon.

Craig's Comment The height of summer may be the time of year that we are all least inclined to start thinking about winter, however there is one important day in December that needs our attention now! Although some people will have been thinking about a day towards the end of December for a long time already, it's a day at the start that presents a huge opportunity for our local communities and economy. That day is Saturday 3rd of December or, as it has become better known, Small Business Saturday. Each year Small Business Saturday is a day when our focus should be solely on the small, often local, almost always independent, businesses that we find in our communities. They are the businesses that give our towns and villages their character, that provide local jobs, and that keep our money circulating throughout the local economy.

But why should you start thinking about 3rd December now, in mid-July? Although many of us can decide to pop out on the day and buy a loaf of bread in our local bakers, or fill up with petrol at the independent garage, for businesses and local communities it takes a little longer. Each year different areas have come up with their own schemes to make the most of Small Business Saturday. It could be as simple as having free car parking in all car parks on the day to encourage shoppers to stay that little while extra. This is a scheme that has worked in many areas. Another option could be to use the build up to the day itself to profile a variety of local business success stories each day. This has done huge amounts to help introduce residents to the variety of shops and businesses on their doorstep on some parts of the country. Small Businesses are so important to our local economy and health. By supporting local businesses

our money gets recycled into the community instead of going into the accounts of businesses based far away from us. It has also been suggested that supporting local businesses could increase the amount we walk. Although free parking can help encourage us to drive into town, importantly it also encourages us to stay longer and walk around more once we have actually parked. Now is the time to get our thinking caps on. If you do have an idea get in touch with the District Council, Gloucestershire Federation of Small Businesses, or a local business network like Forest Traders, and share it. That way we can make sure that when December 2016 does finally arrive we have the best Small Business Saturday yet!

Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood

With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth Page 24

which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds.

always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight.

In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now.

Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.

Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative,

Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to safely control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, biological controls, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Newent Community School introduces the world of business to Year 9 students Year 9 students at Newent Community School were recently given the opportunity to engage with the business community in and around Newent. Organised by Pippa Palmer, the students were first taken to Two Rivers Housing in Cleeve Mill Lane where they received a briefing from Managing Director, Garry King. Garry welcomed the students and explained the concept of housing in general, how it relates to business and the work done by Two Rivers. Garry commented: "I am very pleased that Two Rivers could host this. We as a company are very keen to be involved with the local schools and the community as a whole and see this as a great opportunity for students to study local business". Students divided up into groups where they visited two businesses in the same park and then one further business in the town itself. The purpose for visiting three businesses was to give students an insight into

Students Owen Fishpool, Emma Shaw, Elliot Gardner, Lucy Dingle and Kirk Cherry at the Carpenters Factory

different workplaces that could be found in and around Newent. One group visited a wellestablished local carpenters, Bespoke Newent Joinery (part of J & J Gloucester Ltd) in Newent Business Park. Run by Peter Phillips, it specialises in historical carpentry. Peter showed the students around the workshop explaining what he did, how all the machinery worked and what the finished work looked like. The next stop was the factory, Britdoors Group, also on the same estate. The group were welcomed by the Managing Director, Liam Kelleher who explained in detail what work was carried out at the factory and how fire doors were made. Lastly, as a contrast, they went on to visit a shop in Newent, Country Corner, where owner Suzie Matthews showed students the workings of a traditional shop and discussed the requirements of working in a retail environment. Year 9 continued to visit various businesses in Newent for the next three days and provided feedback on their findings and what they had learned. They appreciated having the

Two Rivers MD, Gary King, addressing the students

opportunity to engage with the world of work and commented that they were fascinated to have learned of the great number of diverse businesses in the area. Organiser Pippa Palmer remarked: "I am very grateful to Two Rivers for hosting this opportunity and also grateful to all those businesses that took part in helping the students to see close-up how businesses work. I believe it has been an eye-opener for all my students and they have all said how they thoroughly enjoyed the visits and what they learned." - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Brilliant on a Budget

One thing that makes Hartpury CofE Primary, and any small rural primary school, special is its community feel. With less than 100 children and only 16 staff it is impossible for everyone not to know each other really well. All of the teachers from Reception to Year 6 know all of the children; all of the parents know all of the staff and best of all as head I know each and every one of my children as an individual. However, this small school ethos comes at a cost – small schools have small budgets and therefore we have to be creative with how we generate extra income to ensure that our setting offers the same opportunities as larger schools. Like many schools we look out for grants and trust funds but what makes a real difference each and every year is our fabulous Friends committee. Made up mainly of parents but also sometimes including grandparents, ex-parents and members of the local community this group of volunteers work tirelessly throughout the year to provide those extra opportunities for the children in our school. Already this year the Friends have through various activities raised money to subsidise school trips, send the whole school to the panto, pay for whole class music lessons

Page 28

and numerous building projects to improve the school environment. In June they, once again, excelled themselves by putting on the biggest event of the year; our summer BBQ. The event on a Friday night draws crowds from neighbouring villages and raises a huge amount of money (which this year will go towards buying new iPads for the school).

Hartpury CofE Primary. Please feel free to contact the school office on: 01452 700446 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - written by Tony Larner, Head teacher

Children have an amazing time enjoying the wide variety of events: Pony and trap rides, soak the bloke (not much fun for the male staff!), milk the cow, eating donuts on string, bouncy slide rides, teddy bear tombola, sweetie jar tombola, cake stall, archery and obstacle courses. For adults there is always a bar, freshly cooked food and a range of amazing raffle prizes to win. Many of the events, stalls and prizes are donated by local companies or members from the local community. The event is always well attended and it is great to see so many local residents joining in the fun. Despite a little rain the event, this year, was an amazing success and the school was host to hundreds of visitors all having a great time. With any luck the money raised, which we estimate will be around £1500, will be enough to give the school the opportunity to expand its IT resources and further develop the amazing provision the children receive at the school. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit

We’re enjoying science and are recycling some old rubbish to enhance our garden

With the nice weather they have been able to have some lessons outside, making use of a new blackboard in the outdoor classroom. They have also held assemblies in our special amphitheatre. Thursday mornings are especially busy as we welcome the children who will be joining reception class in September to have a taster of school life. In another busy month our Junior class had a great day out at Cheltenham Science Festival, where they took part in lots of experiments on “Powering the Planet”. They visited the space zone, where they tried on outfits, took part in mission control and launched a rocket through role play. They also took part in lots of virtual reality activities using interactive displays – a great opportunity for learning! The school garden is important for play and relaxation and the children have been making use of old tyres as planters. They’ve also made flowers from old hub caps after designing patterns in their workbooks first and learnt how to create some “Welly dogs” to guard the entrance to the new reflection area, which is designed to be a peaceful place to sit and think. Page 32

On Saturday 2nd July we will be holding our annual sports day and school fayre with plenty of stalls and refreshments for anyone wanting to join us from 2pm onwards. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. To visit our school in action you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward, at Pauntley School office on 01531 820053. admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk www.pauntleyschool.com

Cake and Bake Chocolate Mousse Brownies Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert!

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4.

BROWNIE BASE • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour

MOUSSE TOPPING • 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate

Makes 12 Ready in 1hour 30mins plus cooling and chilling

TIP

Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour. Page 38

Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large

heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.

3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate

mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk

chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk.

5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl

until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

Home & Interiors Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell

Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as Page 42

cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted

pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fitted-furniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Image - Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Newent Flower Festival July will see the revival of the Newent Flower Festival and it is hoped that the people of Newent and surrounding areas will come on the 16th and 17th July to help us celebrate and continue to make this an annual event. The aim of this event is to celebrate flowers and what we do with them and it will be free and open to all. The event is organised by the Newent Promotional Events Group together with Newent in Bloom and all local churches - St Mary's C of E Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Newent United Reform Church and Glebe Chapel. This year's theme will be the Queen's 90th birthday and Newent in Bloom's "Your very good health". A children's competition of paintings will be held beforehand, which will include the local schools, and the

artwork will then be exhibited in St. Mary's Church on both days. The organisers will be awarding certificates for the paintings on Sunday at the Memorial Hall.

Newent in Bloom will also be running a Shop Display Competition, judging for which will be on the 15th July with the awards being given out on Saturday at 4pm at the Memorial Hall. On Saturday the 16th July at 10.30am the Festival will kick off with floral displays (private and business) and much more in the Memorial Hall together with floral exhibits and a floral workshop in the United Reform Church. At 2pm there will be a floral arrangement demonstration by our very own local celebrity and flower arranger, Bob Harris. On Sunday the 17th July the floral exhibits (and much more) will still be

on display in the Memorial Hall from 12.30pm and at 2pm there will be a Gardeners Question Time hosted by local experts - so bring along all those problem questions! Afterwards the certificates and raffle prizes will be awarded. There will also be various planted-up floral displays around the town over the weekend. Refreshments, teas and coffees, etc. will be available in the Memorial Hall and in tea rooms throughout Newent. The Group would like to thank 3 Shires, Chamberlains, Trioscape, the Circle Club and many others for their support and sponsorship. The Veg Out Open day will be on Saturday the 9th July at the Veg Out Zone starting at 2pm. - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

About Newent & District Rotary Club Our Club meetings take place on Tuesday evenings in the upstairs room of The Red Lion. We meet at 6.45pm for a 7pm dinner. The Club offers a variety of activities and occasionally hosts talks with speakers from all walks of life. Detailed below are examples of what Rotary is all about, with our motto being ‘Service above Self’ within the community. You are most welcome to join us. Celebration of the Queen’s 90th Birthday

Last month club members, together with ladies from Inner Wheel, and other friends came together for an evening of fun and laughter at the ‘Old Chapel’ Hartpury,

in celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday. A traditional dinner of fish and chips, followed by jelly and ice cream, was enjoyed by all, and lots of flag-waving and the singing of numbers from days long gone by kept the party entertained.

on beautiful country lanes while others chose the shorter ten-mile route, and some participants even cycled less than that. Children were entertained at our base at The Willows, Horsefair Lane with a bouncy castle, face painting and a safe area where toddlers could ride. Over £1,400 were raised on the day which will be donated to ‘Prostate Cancer UK’ and other local charities. Membership

‘Ride4Dave’ Charity Cycle Event On Father’s Day, Sunday 19th June, the Club held its second annual charity cycling event, Ride4Dave, in memory of the Club’s former President David Trigg from Dymock. Families and friends were joined by experienced club cyclists to ride the lovely Newent Cycling Loop. Some enjoyed the twentyeight miles ride

If you would like further information or would be interested in joining us, please contact our Secretary on 01452 413442 or e-mail rochehighnam@btinternet.com.

What To Consider When Hiring A Dog-Walker If you work full-time or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each time? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog-walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references. • They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or

upsetting. Pet business insurance It is imperative that your dog-walker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely, anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog-walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or theft of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a potential new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/05/2015/advice/ petplan-checklist/what-questions-should-i-askmy-dog-walker-insurance-credentials-safetyand-more/

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats - Fleas and Ticks With the warmer weather upon us this summer, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out, exploring and hunting in the sunshine, and whilst parasites are a problem all year round, they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in areas where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors, in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person; the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and a localised infection. Ticks sometimes also carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor), has recently been recorded in the UK; it was first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog’s immune system to attack its own

OnionEd’s Blog The astronaut Tim Peake has made his way back to Earth after his time on the International Space Station. He's done some amazing things during his stay, from breaking the world record for the fastest marathon run in space (3 hours 35minutes, covering 86,000km) to eating bacon sandwiches! I have just discovered that a million seeds of the lettuce plant have been in orbit with him. These will be planted and their growth compared with normal plants. I also hear that leeks and chives have been successfully grown by researchers in the Netherlands, in soil thought to be like Martian dirt. However, they seem to be missing one thing - onions! So I have decided to put my name down for the next manned mission to Mars and

take up some onion seeds to grow. Onions are far more versatile and appear in more dishes, in more countries than any other vegetable, so I'm sure the astronauts will be glad that I brought them with me. However, before my trip to Mars I will be helping to organise the Newent Onion Fayre which is on Saturday 10th September. In the weeks leading up to the event I will be looking out for some creative shop window displays, which this year has the theme of ‘Onions in Space’.

Perhaps you can look out for them too! - OnionEd

Big Lunch Donation After a successful Big Lunch this year the Voice of Newent Group has made a donation to the Newent Dolphin Club. The Dolphin Club is a youth club for adults and teenagers with a learning disability which meets most Tuesday evenings at Newent Community Centre from 7pm to 9pm and engages in activities such as crafts, indoor games, skittles, cooking and many others. At a recent meeting in the George Hotel the Voice of Newent donated the sum of £150 to the Dolphin Club. Cathie Jones Blick, representing the Dolphin Club said "We would like to say a huge thank you to the Voice of

Newent's Third Annual Big Lunch Newent's third annual Big Lunch was a roaring success with more than 400 people attending during the course of an amazingly fine afternoon at the lake. The theme this year was "Hoedown" and many who attended got into the spirit of things by dressing up. Country and Western music from David Blick's band set the scene for an afternoon of picnicing and fun, followed by music from the English Sisters and Rosita. With poetic interludes from Sam, the MC, everyone was kept entertained all afternoon and the Strawberry Hill Dancers were as entrancing as ever.

The stalls and activities, provided by local traders and groups, were very busy, especially when Onion Ed made his usual appearance to support the event. He also reminded us that this year's Onion Fayre is on 10th September. It was heartening to see organisations such as The Royal British Legion, Newent Dolphin Club and Newent in Bloom setting out their stalls again. With Newent Runners Club and the Hockey Club providing activities there was fun for all, and the centre piece, the stalls, was busy throughout. We started the afternoon, again, by splashing water on our own favourite, Dan Yeandle (see photo). What a sport! Tea, coffee and cake were generously supplied by the Chill Out Zone who were raising funds for themselves and the Skate Park Fund. The Voice of Newent group wish to acknowledge the tremendous support Left: The crowds enjoying a wonderful afternoon Below: David Bilck (centre with accordion) and his Country and Western Band

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning the attention and all the gongs. Only after Hurst was knighted did the press, fans, and fellow players get behind a campaign to honour the rest of the team.

The Queen presents the 1966 World Cup to England Captain, Bobby Moore

Absolutely no prizes for guessing which glorious golden anniversary we’re celebrating this month. What, you need a clue? Some people are on the pitch – they think it’s all over – it is now! Yes, of course you knew... 30th July 1966 was undoubtedly the greatest day in our sporting history, when more than 30 million people worldwide saw England beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup for the first and only time. So far. The story of the game, and especially of England’s disputed third goal, is too well-known to go into here. But a campaign launched by the Daily Mirror in January this year to mark the anniversary by knighting all the surviving members of the team (except hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst, who is a knight already) stirs the dusty memory of an investiture conducted by the Queen 16 years ago. Somehow, in the immediate aftermath of the game, the Charlton brothers Bobby (OBE 1969, knighthood ‘94) and Jackie (OBE ‘74), goal-scorers Hurst (MBE ’75, knighthood ‘98) and Martin Peters (MBE ‘78), captain Bobby Moore (OBE ‘67), and goalkeeper Gordon Banks (OBE ‘70) captured all Page 56

So it was that on 7th March 2000 the “forgotten five”, as they were nicknamed, turned up at Buck House to receive the MBEs they’d been awarded in the New Year’s honours. Full-backs Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson, midfielders Alan Ball and Nobby Stiles (both of whom, unusually for midfielders of the time, were only 5’ 6”), and striker George Cohen had all made vast contributions, not just to victory in the final but also to the campaign leading up to it, which were at long last being acknowledged and rewarded. But what became of those lesser-known lions after Nobby Stiles’s famous post-match victory dance, dentures in one hand and Jules Rimet trophy in the other? Of the five only the youngest, Alan Ball (21 at the time), went on to enjoy what you might call a stellar playing career; not because he was a better player than the others but because only his career extended into the era when footballers became media celebrities. He scored 187 goals in 833 club games spanning 23 years and represented England in the 1970 and ‘74 World Cups. His top-flight career included 72 caps (six as captain) and lengthy spells at Blackpool, Everton (League Champions 1969-70), Arsenal and Southampton. His 15 years in management were less successful and he retired in

1999, dying in 2007 of a sudden heart attack. Of the others, Hunt was arguably the most successful, scoring 286 goals for Liverpool (one of them, against Arsenal in August 1964, being the first ever shown on Match of the Day), 24 for Bolton, and 18 for England. After retiring from football in 1972 he went into the haulage business. Fellow full back Wilson made over 400 club appearances in 20 years, for Huddersfield, Everton, Oldham and Bradford, before quitting football to become an undertaker. Cohen was a Fulham stalwart for 13 years and earned 30 England caps; he was forced into retirement by injury in 1969 and enjoyed a successful career as a coach at his old club. Stiles’s career followed a similar path: after 11 years at Manchester United he spent two seasons at Middlesbrough and then two at Preston under his old teammate Bobby Charlton. His playing career was also ended by injury and he also returned to his old club as youth coach where he trained, amongst others, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, and the Neville brothers.

In honour of the above, this month’s birthday boys are all ex-international footballers.

Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Enrico Annoni (1st), Minas Hantzidis (4th), Gianfranco Zola (5th), Owen Coyle (14th), and Martin Keown (24th).

Home-grown talent found in Ross-on-Wye When Charlotte Rice started her new career in retail, she had no idea how quickly her artistic talents would be spotted by her employers and put to good use. Following university, 27-year-old Charlotte from Peterstow worked as a teaching assistant and recently also joined Labels Shopping as a customer service advisor in October last year. “When we asked Charlotte to tidy up a display of clothing we soon spotted that she had hidden artistic talent” said Ailsa MacLeod, Head of Marketing at Labels Shopping. “Not only did she tidy up but she totally re-designed the layout of the display and the associated promotional information about the garments by adding her own hand-drawn illustrations!”

Charlotte Rice puts the finishing touches to a clothing display at Labels Shopping. More local talent put to good use at Labels Shopping.

“The rest, as they say, is history and Charlotte’s illustration skills have been put to use throughout the store as well as in our advertising, social media and website" said Ailsa. Labels Shopping, Ross-on-Wye, is located just off junction 4 of the M50 and is open 7 days a week.

Poetry Workshop After a very successful first Poetry Workshop, Samantha Samms will be running another one on Saturday 16th July 2016. The workshop will run from 10am to 1pm at the George Hotel and this time there will be an option to stay for lunch and further conversation afterwards. Samantha says "I tried the Poetry Workshop out a few weeks ago and not only was it successful for those who attended but I found quite a number of people who would have attended had they had the opportunity, so I have agreed to do another in July." "I am passionate about poetry", explains Samantha, "and the purpose of these workshops is to introduce people to this fantastic art form in a non-scary and informal environment."

Samantha says: "I love running these workshops and seeing the positive change that comes over people in just a few hours. The workshop costs £20 per person. This includes all workshop activities and drinks (tea/coffee/ water). Lunch is optional and costs extra. This is well worth it for the 3 hours of fun and creativity, the experience and the boost that participants get." (Concessions will be available on an individual basis.) Samantha can also run workshops for individual groups and societies. Anyone interested in attending a workshop, contacting Samantha about an event or just having a chat can give her a call on 07743381360, or get in touch via Facebook or email - Facebook: (Samantha Samms - Comedian and Poet); Email: SamanthaSamms@outlook.com. - written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

The last workshop took place in April and all the attendees said they would recommend it to friends. Some of the comments made by those who attended included: "I now realise poetry is possible for me." "Loads of fun...thanks for a lovely workshop! I really enjoyed it...great facilitation." "Very enjoyable, I learnt a lot about poetry." "Good ideas on how to start writing. I loved it, can we do it again?"

Finance

By Ann Haldon

Which type of ISA is best for you? open to anyone aged 18 or over. The money is divided between various investment products, including company shares, government and corporate bonds, and unit trusts.

Individual Savings Accounts were first introduced in 1999. They provided exemption from income tax and capital gains tax, and quickly became a popular place to save and invest. Back then, it was a straightforward choice between a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares equivalent, but with seven different types of Individual Savings Account now available, making the right choice is much more complicated. So how do you know which ISA is best for you, and even whether you’re eligible to apply? We take a look at the different ISA accounts available, to identify which ones might suit your needs. Instant access cash Isa A straightforward tax-free savings account offered by banks and building societies - interest rates have fallen considerably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way to put your money to one side. You get instant access to your savings, and need to be at least 16 years of age to open this account. stocks and shares Isa Stocks and Shares ISAs are Page 60

Although as an investment there’s greater risk with a Stocks and Shares ISA, you can control your exposure to it by splitting your annual allowance between this and a Cash ISA. JunIor Isa Parents can save for their children in a Junior ISA. It’s open to children under the age of 18, but the child can only open an account if they are aged 16 or over. The annual allowance currently stands at £4,080, but a child between the ages of 16 and 18 can also open an adult ISA, which boosts their saving capacity. help to Buy Isa A fairly recent addition to the ISA family, the Help to Buy ISA was introduced in December 2015 in an attempt to boost the first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, the government has pledged to add a £1 bonus (up to a maximum of £3,000), making it a great way to save for a deposit on a first property. InherItance Isa To avoid having to pay tax on a deceased partner’s ISA savings, the Chancellor introduced the facility to inherit tax-free from December 2014. From the date of a spouse’s death, the surviving partner is granted an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) for the total

amount in the account, and has three years in which to use it. lIfetIme Isa The Lifetime ISA will be introduced from 2017, and is for people between the ages of 18 and 39. A 25% bonus from the government is available, so for every £4 saved they will put in £1 up to a maximum of £1,000. It can be used towards the purchase of a house up to the value of £450,000, otherwise you need to keep the money in the account until the age of 60 to avoid a penalty. InnovatIve fInance Isa This is seen to be a riskier choice for investors, but one that potentially brings higher returns. One of the risks is that your money won’t be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme because the banks are not involved. You place your money with peer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higher rate of interest than with Cash or Stocks and Shares ISAs. At the time of writing, however, there are only eight such online lenders offering this type of ISA. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/saving/article-3505692/ The-seven-different-types-offerchoose-one-you.html http://www.moneywise. co.uk/banking-saving/savingsaccounts-isas/how-to-inherit-isa http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/mortgageshome/article3520497/From-new-LifetimeIsa-shared-ownership-banishtime-buyer-blues.html

Summer Reads There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month. Flawed – Cecelia Ahern A book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal. Best British Short Stories 2016 – edited by Nicholas Royle Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best fiction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to find this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer. Page 64

The Hanging Club – Tony Parsons There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping. My Name is Leon – Kit de Waal When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.

The Museum of You – Carys Bray Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings. The Sudden Appearance of Hope – Claire North No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection.

Personal Travel Counsellor in Newent Chris Gooch from Newent runs his own local travel business which is part of the leading independent travel company TravelCounsellors. Chris was born and bred in Kilcot and attended Newent Community School. He is part of a family that has always been deeply involved in the Newent community and was particularly involved in the 50th anniversary celebrations at Newent Community School in 2015. Chris happily admits that he is a country lad and has spent much of his working life with the estate agency, however, during this time he developed a liking for

travelling. This led him to consider doing something different and more flexible, so he set up a cruise franchise and eventually moved on to work with Travel Counsellors. Chris says "I like the independence that the job offers me and enjoy being part of Travel Counsellors. It is an international company of some 900 home-based independent travel counsellors that has already been going for 22 years. It is just celebrating being named in the Sunday Times HSBC International Track 200 again. It is the fourth time the company has received this accolade. Travel Counsellors has also already received the Queen's Award for Enterprise (2012)". Since launching his business Chris has seen it go from strength to strength and puts his success down to the unique personal service he provides to his customers. Chris adds "As a travel counsellor I take the time to get to know my clients so that I can create tailormade trips for them. I benefit

from global deals, local knowledge and have 24/7 support from overseas offices. It is this personal service that sets us apart. There is no typical customer, we service families, schools and businesses from the straightforward holiday through to cruises and tailor-made itineries around the world, something not many companies can do. Our customers are also protected for all aspects of the holiday or business trip, and I consider this to be a very important aspect to the service. It is a very personal service that cares about and looks after its customers." If you wish to find out more you can contact Chris on 07967 183517 or email chris.gooch@travelcounsellors. com. Newent resident wins holiday of a lifetime It was a typical, cold January morning when Newent resident, Michael Mansfield, decided to enter an online competition to win a 12-day cruise, sailing along the French and Italian Rivieras.

Michael was invited to Share Radio to collect his prize. The 12-day, all inclusive, luxury French and Italian Riviera Wine Cruise for two people was to sail from Monte Carlo to Rome. Michael, and his close friend Bob Morris, flew to Nice Airport where they were met by a chauffer-driven Michael with the Newent Magazine at the colosseum limousine. They were lucky at entering competitions, then taken on to Monte Carlo however after this I think I will where the Sea Dream 2 Cruise be entering a few more!” Ship, which recently appeared on BBC2’s ‘The Millionaires Holiday Club’, was berthed.

Fast forward two months and the memory of entering was long gone until, out of the blue came a phone call from Share Radio (who were running the competition) informing him that he’d won!

Michael told Newent Magazine that it was the holiday of a lifetime normally taken by the rich and famous. “I’ve never been
