Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, As we wave goodbye to Spring 2016, we welcome British summertime in the hope for plenty of sun, fun days out, and lots of summer fetes and picnics in the park. With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to start getting out and about and getting some more exercise. I am going to start doing my local Parkrun every weekend, wish me luck! Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing the flags of St. George spring up everywhere to commemorate the start of Euro 2016 and expressing England’s dream of winning a tournament for the first time since 1966. June also gives us the perfect excuse to enjoy some delicious strawberries and cream and the odd Pimms or two while we enjoy the start of the Wimbledon fortnight. (This is also the time of year I take up tennis very seriously)! Have fun in the sun and see you next month! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for Written Communication – Misery or Joy? Written communication has a long lasting effect because it can be read over and over again. It can reignite joy and bitterness. In my years of consultancy work, I have seen the written word cause more aggression, drama and strikes than any other means of communication. The written word, if there is any ambiguity, will always be read negatively. You must write, not so you are understood, but so you cannot be misunderstood. Although communicating by letter has decreased considerably in recent years, using email which of course also requires people to spell and use grammar correctly, has increased. If you want to have real impact and show that you care, a letter or card can be the most powerful way of winning friends and influencing people. In the business world those who want an appointment with a decision maker should write a letter first and then follow up with a phone call. So here are a few tips to help make your written word more effective: 1. Firstly, attract attention with an attention getting word, phrase or line, for example ‘Here is some good news’. Always try to get something positive either on your subject matter or your first words that will illicit the response ‘I want to hear what you have to say’. 2. Keep it short. More and more people are getting emails on their mobiles so long emails can be hard to read, try and stick to 2 or 3 paras and 2 to 3 sentences per para. This also applies to letters; short letters get read. 3. Don’t criticise or be negative. This is the biggest cause of communication breakdown,
aggression and stress. If this is necessary, speak don’t write. 4. Read before sending. Never send an email or a letter without reading it all through before sending and ask yourself, if you got this how would you feel? 5. Choose the right time. Never send an email or letter in response to anger or frustration caused by one you may have received without first giving yourself time. A great tip, don’t send an email overnight, draft it reread it and then send it the next day. 6. Check spelling and grammar. This is so easy with spellcheck, as otherwise you will lose respect and trust. 7. Use key words. There are certain key words that have great power when we read them, they will also generate pleasure in the reader. “you” “your” and “mine” the reader reads them as “I”, “me” and “my”. 8. Look for the opportunity to send nice messages with positive content, something that shows you care. It’s interesting how Twitter is declining because it’s all about ME! 9. Be careful with attachments. Again so much of our communication is on the mobile and it is more difficult to read attachments this way. 10. Don’t ‘cc’. If there is not an essential need to know, don’t waste other people’s time by copying them.

fully, if you heap cover.
Q. What if I’m a nontaxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the nontaxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount.
That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. New Owner for Tea Rooms and Italian Restaurant in Church Street The Cake Box Tea Rooms and Italian Restaurant in Newent has a new owner and is now called the Italian Tea Rooms and Restaurant. Former owners, John and Pearl Celino, have decided to call it a day in order to spend more time in their garden and allotment. John says: "We are sorry to leave but feel after 7 years that this is the right time to retire and hand over to someone younger. We would like to express our grateful thanks to all the past and present patrons of the tea rooms and restaurant for their custom. We now hope to spend more time on the garden, our allotment and Council business." The business has been taken over by Colin Rooke and on reopening in April Colin said: "I am pleased to be able to take over and continue both businesses and I can assure everyone that they will continue in the same way as before." Colin comes from a solid background having been in catering locally for more than 30 years, most recently running Colin's Tea Rooms in Ledbury and latterly the Kilcot Inn in Kilcot. Having subsequently retired from the Kilcot, Colin found he could not settle so when the opportunity to purchase this business came up he found he could not resist it. He says: "John and Pearl have already built up a great reputation, both with the tea shop and restaurant. Together with my head chef, Camilla Millard, we will continue to do a similar varied menu with the addition of serving Italian food during the day, so Colin in his new Tea Rooms come and try it!" and restaurant

MR SHAMBLES’ JUNE MEWS Goodness me, we are already half way through the year isn’t that scary? I can’t wait to stretch out on the cobbles in the sun during the long summer days. Why not join me in the courtyard with a cuppa and a cake from Erol’s Cafe... it’s a great suntrap.
I particularly like trying to guess what incense they are burning. I think my favourites are Vanilla and Nag Champa...or maybe the White Sage, a bargain at £2 a box and it does make The Shambles smell lovely. However, Mrs Shambles is very upset that there isn’t a sardine smelling one.
A new shop has opened in The Shambles: Spa Vapes! More people for me to acquaint myself with. Fabulous! They have several other shops in Gloucestershire and opened here in mid May. So, if you’re a vape user or thinking about giving up smoking you don’t need to travel to Cheltenham or Gloucester to get your favourite juices or the very latest vaping paraphernalia ...Andrew and Paul will be delighted to help you out.
Mal at Survival Supplies UK has now settled into the old Sew Sew Studio shop with lots more space and a brand new angling section which he’s still expanding. In fact, it now covers an entire quarter of the shop. I understand he’s mainly catering for the Newent Town Lake fishers, but I’ve wandered in and seen equipment for sea fishing too. He’s even got a stock of maggots and told me that he’ll have worms as well for the start of the fishing season. Of course, that does mean that three quarters of the shop still has all the wondrous survival, hunting and bushcraft gear that people go mad for.
Alexis at Zap has an offer on EVERYTHING! so give her a call on 07540 051037 to book your space. I’ve seen some before and after pictures on Facebook and they are simply astounding! Gallery @ The Shambles have had their second exhibition with great success. There’s so much artwork to choose from, from affordable prints and cards to sculptures and original works of art on canvas and even glass. Perfect to have a wander round during the afternoons and stop off for a tea and biscuit on a Sunday afternoon. It’s open from midday to four o’clock every day except Monday. Enchanted continues to be full of beautiful things. Page 12
Nick and Dee at Old Nicks Tattoo Studio seem to be working flat out at the moment and people come from all over the country to get their quality inkwork. Their designs are unique and incredible, but some people bring in their own designs and let the artists work their magic from them. And then there’s the airbrush artist Nemesis Black, who can lay down some pretty spectacular images and patterns on pretty much anything...especially bikes and helmets! On top of that he’s also a very fine sign writer!
Erol’s Cafe and Sandwich Bar has to be the busiest place in my little cat world. Their breakfasts are a builder’s dream and for the health conscious you can order a bespoke salad box put together exactly how you want it. Then there’s paninis and fresh baguettes with fillings of your choice, jacket potatoes, beef and chicken burgers and lunches which blow my feline mind. Meryem’s Turkish Restaurant is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings for some of the best Turkish cuisine you can imagine. If you’d like to book a table then just phone them during the day on 07548 105667 and prepare your taste buds for a culinary delight. PS. A new event is on its way to The Shambles, look out for it! PURRRRR!

SpaVapes take great pride in sourcing the latest technology and bringing to market “TPD” compliment e-liquids to reinforce Health England's 95% safer than smoking statistics. Although still controversial, vaping is the easiest way to quit smoking and the success rate is very high compared to standard smoking cessation. SpaVapes

They invite customers to stop and chat about their “journey" and love to promote new products with many “special offers”. SpaVapes value existing customers and new starters so support them with a visit and keep it local.

Auction Anecdote Some people may be superstitious but Friday 13th May was a very lucky day for Smiths Auction Rooms as they held their most successful antiques and collectables sale so far this year, making a gross total of over £62,000. The sale had a special section for silver and jewellery which featured a very fine line-up of ‘treasures’ including a large three stone diamond ring of good colour and clarity which sold for £4000. We also achieved great results in the furniture section which was unexpected as furniture items don’t usually ‘hit the headlines’ these days. Centre of attention in the furniture section was a late 17th century oyster walnut veneered chest of drawers which attracted a surprising amount of interest considering some very obvious restoration work and repairs. However, oyster veneered walnut is extremely hard to find these days and this chest featured the additional bonus of decorative boxwood stringing to the top which helped to pick out and highlight the decorative veneers. Oyster walnut veneer was made by sawing up cross sections of small branches or roots and then patching them together - which gives a beautifully figured grain but was very timeconsuming and costly. This type of work was really only in fashion in the very last part of the 17th century and since walnut is not the most stable or durable of woods it rarely comes under the hammer these days. Coming with a consignment of other fine furniture the sale attracted a number of high end furniture buyers and by the end of viewing five telephone lines had been booked on this item alone. With the facility of online bidding these days it is unusual to have so many phone lines booked and so it was obvious the chest was destined to make a good price at the end of the day. After the predictable drawn out battle with online and telephone bidding it was surprisingly a bidder in the room who won the day with a final bid of £3,200. He later complained that he had not wanted to pay nearly as much money for his prize - but otherwise seemed very pleased – saying it was going straight off to a top quality restoration workshop before he will put it in his antiques shop in the Cotswolds. Smiths next sale is on the 10th June and has a full selection of antiques and collectables as well as a special section for clocks and watches. Viewing is on the Thursday prior 10am - 7pm and the fully illustrated catalogue is available online at www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk.

Hartpury Church of England Primary School Swimming to Success At Hartpury we believe that competitive sport is an opportunity that all youngsters should have the chance to experience. As such, we try to get involved with as many different competitive sports as possible. This year we have already competed in the district events for: rugby, football, archery, cricket, mountain biking, netball, athletics, multi-sports, golf and swimming. The events, organised by our district sports partnership led by Newent Secondary school, are an amazing chance for children to pit their skills against other children from local schools. We try to find an opportunity for each child to represent the school in some way so that they have the opportunity to pull on the school kit. This year 93% of our Y5/6 have represented the school in at least one event. As a small school we are often competing against schools sometimes three times as big, it is therefore hard for us to challenge for honours. However, occasionally we can really upset the odds and punch well above our weight. This year’s swimming gala saw us take eight swimmers through the district heats and into the district
Page 18
finals and boy did they deliver when they got there! The event for Y5/6 children, staged at Newent Secondary, is always a highlight of the schools sporting calendar and the pool is crammed with spectators. Our team was in phenomenal form and came away with an astonishing 10 individual medals including 7 golds and 16 relay medals – more than any other school in the event! James Riach swam his way to an individual haul of three golds and a silver; Amelia Raynes took home two individual golds and smashed the district record for individual Y5 breaststroke and Y5 butterfly. Our girls relay teams, which consisted mainly of Y4 swimmers, competed admirably against competitors from other schools that were much older than them. They won three out of a possible four
races – taking the district record in the Y5 Girls Medley - and finishing second in the other. Hartpury now hold a third of all the district swimming records. All in all it was a proud moment for us as a school, the on-looking parents and everyone involved. The future looks bright for the next couple of years as many of these swimmers were competing in age groups above their chronological age and will be around to compete once again. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Hartpury CofE Primary. Please feel free to contact the school office on: 01452 700446 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - written by Tony Larner, Head teacher

Happy birthday Timmy! First birthdays are always special occasions and TwoCan’s milestone gives cause for particular celebration this month. The Newent-based property sales and lettings agency has enjoyed an incredible 12 months since Timmy its lovable mascot first ‘hatched’ in the local market and brought a new style to buying and selling homes. Figures generated by the property search website Rightmove showed that in the first three months of this year, TwoCan found buyers in just eight weeks – out-stripping its nearest rivals who were achieving the same in anything between nine and 27
weeks. That’s great news for anyone who is keen to move and for whom time is of the essence. You might think success like that could only be achieved if the price was low, but figures show TwoCan achieved just under 99%* of the asking price for vendors in its first six months. And if achieving the right price in double-quick time were not enough, the competitively-priced agency consistently won five-star feedback from clients, earning TwoCan the accolade of being named ‘Gloucestershire’s Agent of the Year’ by independent review site raterAgent.
All-in-all not a bad first 12 months, which makes you wonder what’s in store for the year ahead! Call TwoCan for a valuation today and see how the team can get you moving. Tel. 0800 294 2860 www.twocan.estate * Internal data June to December 2015.
Homeopathic medicine comes to Newent Newent Osteopaths have taken on a Homeopath to provide Homeopathic Medicine to the Newent community.
therapies already practiced at Newent Osteopaths and sits well with the practice's slogan…“ for every part of every body.”
Liz Baggs, a fully qualified Homeopathic Consultant, joins Newent Osteopaths to further extend the breadth of treatment offered at the practice. Liz originally qualified as a pharmacist but found herself some 15 years ago gaining an interest in homeopathy. Having spent some time working in Southport Liz took the decision to qualify in the Homeopathy field. She then entered the Lakeland College of Homeopathy in Ambleside and qualified as a Homeopathic Consultant 10 years ago.
Liz explains "A Homeopath works with the body's energy vibrations, having first ascertained as much about the problem(s) presenting and then treats the patient’s body to stimulate the natural life force energy within the body to heal itself. It works on the basis that given the right stimulus the body can overcome virtually any disease. This is provided in the form of an immensely diluted and poeticised remedy. Many physical problems appear to have an emotional cause and Homeopathy can treat many issues such as headaches, hormonal problems, irritable bowel syndrome, stress, pregnant women, children and much more".
For those that are unaware of homeopathic medicine, a homeopath treats physical and mental problems using natural remedies. Sue Eden, owner and Senior Osteopath at Newent Osteopaths feels homeopathic medicine will complement the other

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow Page 22

strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. Remove your weeds before they set seed. Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is
heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith A-Z of Computing - C is for Cleaning Just like everything else in your office or home, your computer needs cleaning - both inside and out. This will help to prolong its life and keep it running smoothly. You wouldn’t believe the state of some computers I’ve seen! I don’t recommend that you open up your PC or laptop to physically clean inside it, that’s best left to the experts. Instead, you should regularly clean your system of temporary files, cookies, and other clutter. Windows has a tool for this called Disk Clean-up, you can find it on the Start Menu under Accessories > System Tools in Windows 7, or under Windows Accessories > Administrative Tools in Windows 10. This will safely remove the rubbish from your hard drive without deleting anything important. It’s also a good idea to delete any unwanted documents or pictures, and remove any programs that you know you won’t use again - this frees up hard drive space and system resources. It’s also important to clean the outside of your computer (and probably a good idea for hygiene!) Never use liquids - if you want to clean your computer with anything more than a duster, you can buy specialist antibacterial computer and telephone cleaning wipes from stationery shops. Maybe give your mobile phone a wipe while you’re at it too! If your PC is kept on the floor, I’d suggest moving it higher up, particularly if you have pets. The fan acts like a vacuum and sucks in dust, dirt and pet hair, which will reduce performance and can kill the PC. I’ve opened up old PCs to see balls of dust and fluff - and on more than one occasion, a spider! Keeping it off the floor helps to prevent some of this, but it will still need cleaning. Use a hoover to gently clean around the case, particularly the vents. One of my clients has a laptop which she uses on her desk, and within a couple of months of getting a cat, we found quite a collection of cat hair on the vents. PCs and laptops don’t like getting hot at the best of times - if you imagine the dust and dirt inside as a blanket over all the electronic components, you can see why it would affect their performance. If you have any questions about cleaning your PC, or queries on anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk or the number below.

Swimming Gala Success, Musical memories, Science steps and Victorian Schooldays
Swimming Gala Our junior children recently took part in the annual swimming gala at Newent School. This year we were the smallest school taking part and our swimmers won the competition! It was very close in the end, we won the whole gala by winning the final event – a mixed boy-girl front crawl relay. Wildlife Quiz - Following on from their first round victory over Ann Cam, our wildlife quiz team continued their success with a second round victory over Ashleworth School. Very well done Chloe, Tess, Liberty, Emma and Zac.
They helped write songs and music and performed them at Highnam Church in a special concert. Footsteps in our Playground - As part of a science experiment measuring their stride length, the Juniors made rather a mess in the playground - luckily it all washed away!
Victorian Schooldays - We have been examining artifacts and comparing Victorian and present day schools. The Infants took a journey back in time to become Victorian schoolchildren at the Dean Heritage Museum. They’ve also been studying the local area, making maps, plans and models. consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.
Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider
In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual

interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Craig's Comment The Police and Crime Commissioner elections may only just have taken place, but another vote is already on the cards. As has been covered by the media, both locally and nationally for what seems like an eternity, the vote on whether to remain or leave the European Union is now upon us. On Thursday 23rd June you will have your say on whether we should stay or go. If you were registered to vote in the most recent election for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire back in May then you should be once again registered to vote in the referendum. If you are unsure, get in touch with Forest of Dean District Council as soon as possible. Across the UK elections come and go and often the turn-out is not extremely high. Journalists and
politicians often try to come up with reasons for this, whether people understood the election, whether they were interested, and sometimes simply the weather and time of the year can be a reason considered. Whatever your opinion and view on whether Britain should remain part of the European Union or leave it, the point that is most important is that your opinion matters and your vote counts. UK and global leaders are having their say on the future of the UK, however, on June 23rd your say is worth just as much as that of any councillor, MP, MEP or journalist. If you are still undecided or if you haven't yet managed to even start thinking about how you might vote, there is still time for you to come to a decision and make sure that your voice is heard. In far too many elections and referendums more people choose not to vote at all than to put a cross in one of the boxes on their ballot
paper. However, the referendum on June 23rd is too important to the future of our country and to the Forest of Dean for that to happen. If you are still undecided this is the opportunity to not only speak with your MP, MEPs and councillors, but also with your friends, family, and work colleagues. This way hopefully even more people will take an interest than already have to date. The future is too important to be decided by those people that did not have their say. The only way we can make sure this happens is to make sure we take the opportunity and for all of us to have their say. Craig is the District Councillor for Oxenhall and Newent North East. If Craig is your councillor you can contact him on craig.lawton@ fdean.gov.uk. To find out who your District Councillor is you can contact Forest of Dean District Council on 01594 810000.
Newent Town AFC Under 15s excel in Cheltenham league Last season Hayden Rust, Jason Rickard and myself formed the team, playing in the Gloucester league and finishing second. This year we entered a much tougher league division, the under 15s Cheltenham league, which allowed us to come across the best teams around. Our boys have worked very hard and have only lost one league game this season - against a very good Gala Wilton team. Not only do we have a great team on the pitch but off it too. With myself, Jason Rickard and Paul Griffiths running the team this season, along with the best group of parents you will ever find, we were able to spend a lot of time together away from football, going camping three or four times a year and ensuring a team tour each year. We have total support from our Chairman and Committee the future at the club looks fab and we hope to keep all the boys together over the coming years. - Debbie Bignell

Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.
Ingredients:
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface
• 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced
Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins
TIP
You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil. Page 38
and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.
Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.
3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry
the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

ORDERING A TAKEAWAY?
With New Kam Wah, eating in is the new going out! Newent Magazine’s Gregg Upwards sets out to help you plan your ideal takeaway. I’ll admit that it was hard to believe when I was asked to visit Newent’s newest Chinese takeaway, order what I wanted, write about it and then do the same once a week for a month and be paid for it too! It was a tough ask but I stepped in and took one for the team! It’s a well-known fact that more people order takeaway whilst watching their favourite sporting event on the TV. In the coming months we have Euro 2016 Football in June, followed by Wimbledon at the end of the month, crowned by the Olympic Games in August. My mission was to provide some inspiration to readers to help them plan their perfect New Kam Wah takeaway this summer.
SWEET AND SOUR
It’s an all time favourite that never fails to impress! A delicious selection to be had here, add some rice, prawn crackers and job done. I’ve only just touched on some of the amazing food that you can try – the currys are lovely, the beef/chicken/king prawn and pork dishes are delicious and there are also lots of vegetarian and English food options. If you want to try something new and exciting then visit Ricky and Lin at New Kam Wah Takeaway, 43 Broad Street, Newent or call 01531 820814. They’re waiting to take your order!
SET MEALS New Kam Wah have a broad selection of set meals for between one to four people, including plenty of vegetarian options. The set for four comes highly recommended, especially if you have friends round to watch the match.
APPETISERS In the past we’ve all been used to dividing up who’s ordered what individually, however the sharing appetisers from New Kam Wah are not to be missed. You can try a special mixed platter or order individual dishes and share out the food. Imagine tucking in to some of these: spare ribs barbequed in Peking sauce, chicken wings and ribs, satay chicken on skewers, spring rolls or, my favourite sharing starter, crispy aromatic duck!
CHOW MEIN/CHOP SUEY Again, order lots of starters, share the chow mein/chop suey and work out which one will suit all tastes. New Kam Wah serve dishes to cater for everyone’s taste buds. Try the Singapore chow mein if you like it hot!

Newent's annual Big Lunch 2016 This year is Newent's 3rd annual Big Lunch which will take place at the lake on Sunday 5th June from 12.00 noon to 4.30pm.
Crowds enjoying a previous Big Lunch
This year's theme will be "HOEDOWN", so get out your checked shirts, dungarees and cowboy outfits, put on your cowboy boots and get prepared to do some country dancing. As well as lots of stalls there will be plenty of fun, games and activities. Dan Quinton braves the Soak-A-Bloke in a previous Big Lunch
This is a free event so bring your picnics and join the rest of Newent in a fantastic community get-together down by the lake. The money raised will go to the Newent Dolphin Club. Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply. Page 46
The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.
The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

Update on Forest Policing by Inspector Steve Chester For the first four months of this year, crime has fallen in the Forest of Dean by 6.4% compared to 2015’s figures. This is really pleasing as there are 52 fewer victims! Of note, there was a drop in reported thefts of nearly 30%. This is excellent news, although I am keen that all crimes are reported to us. If you are unlucky enough to become the victim of a crime, please report it via the 101 number, which is a flat rate call of 15p, irrespective of how long you are on the phone to us, or by using the Constabulary’s website. To find it, tap in “Gloucestershire Police UK” on the internet and click “Contact Us”, then “Report a crime or incident”. Even if you believe there is little we can do to identify the offender, please tell us about it; there may be a trend in your area, or there may be other scenes nearby where there is evidence we can use to link to your crime. Officers patrol areas based on recent intelligence, so if they are unaware of offences having occurred, they are unlikely to be in those locations to deter further crimes or catch the culprits.
by Police and our partners to the students who had the opportunity to visit stands and be told of real cases of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), how to stay safe online, how to recognise controlling and coercive behaviour, the implications of mental health problems and how to report any concerns they may have. There were also very interesting and interactive session with Year 8 pupils about what is healthy in a relationship and what is not.
A similar event was held at Gloucestershire College at Five Acres and a further roadshow will take place at The Dean Academy in Lydney shortly.
The Constabulary’s website has a very useful “What Do I Do If?” section under which you can find out what to do if: you have a road traffic collision; you are worried about a child, be that CSE, physical abuse, or neglect; you have concerns about an elderly neighbour; suspect care home abuse; or believe someone is suffering domestic abuse. There are links to other independent Domestic violence has sadly risen agencies that can help too, such as; in the Forest as it has elsewhere in Gloucestershire Domestic Abuse the County and nationally. If you Support Services (GDASS) 0845 are affected by domestic abuse in 602 9035, National Domestic Abuse any form, or are concerned about Helpline 0808 2000 247, and “Glos someone else who may be a victim, please tell us about it. The Police take Take a Stand”. There is also useful crime prevention advice for your all such reports extremely seriously and every report will be followed up business or home, so I recommend you take a look. with the emphasis of our work being to safeguard people from harm. Each town in the Forest retains their named constables, who are I attended a Domestic Abuse and supported by PCSOs and have Healthy Relationships Roadshow at geographical accountability for the Newent Community School recently, town and the parishes adjacent; where presentations were given Page 48
Lydney (PC Phil Hopkins), Coleford (PC Leanne Sterry), Cinderford (PC Julie Evans) and Newent (PC Rob Mortimer). In addition; Tidenham has PC Nick Assirati, West Dean PC Henry Davies, and the A48 corridor PC Rob Dix. They are there to help their neighbourhoods deal with local problems and spend most of their time on their respective areas. We also have 5 teams of officers based at Coleford which provide 24/7 cover for incident resolution and investigations. Coleford Police Station is currently being refurbished to accommodate all Forest of Dean Police Officers, PCSOs and Special Constables, as the newly re-elected Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Surl has pledged to maintain a police station in the Forest. We have posts at Newent Library, Belle Vue Centre in Cinderford and at the Community Fire Station in Lydney, where the public can make appointments to speak to their local officers, or drop by at specific times. The Constabulary is currently recruiting and aims to get back to a strength of 1100 officers. About 30 transferees will be joining us shortly from other forces and 70 new constables will be appointed over the coming months. Many of the successful applicants are likely to be people who have shown commitment to serving the public in Gloucestershire already by being Special Constables. We will be looking to replace the Specials who go on to be “regulars” and I am particularly keen to raise the number in the Forest. If you are interested, please look under the “Neighbourhood Policing” section of the website, where there is plenty of useful information. I intend to have an open evening at Coleford Police Station later in the summer to assist with Special Constabulary recruitment. Details will be published on the website. I wish you a pleasant and safe summer in the Forest of Dean.

Toilet Training A Puppy You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the

signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet.

External Parasites of Dogs & Cats Fleas and Ticks With the warmer weather upon us this springtime, fleas and ticks will become extremely prevalent. Dogs and cats are out more, exploring and hunting in the sunshine, and whilst parasites are a problem all year round, they are mainly a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in areas where there is rough foliage and bracken. Ticks act as vectors, in the same way that a mosquito transmits malaria by sucking the blood from a person; the tick does the same to an animal. In the process of feeding, the disease will transmit from the tick to the dog or cat. This can cause irritation and a localised infection. Ticks sometimes also carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Babesiosis, a disease carried by a new imported tick (Dermacentor), has recently been recorded in the UK; it was first seen in Essex. The parasite causes the dog’s immune system to attack its own

Ann Cam Sports Update Variety, enjoyment, success and the opportunity to join the village in welcoming some famous visitors have made up this year's Winter sporting diet for the pupils of Ann Cam School, Dymock. October '15 saw six junior boys and four junior girls take part in the district team cross country event. This was held at Lakers with 259 children from 27 schools taking part! The girls finished 17th and the boys 8th (the best individual result was 4th). All of the runners showed lots of passion and determination and represented the school extremely well. Following on from that, the annual Quick Sticks hockey tournament took place at Newent School. Prior to the tournament the children had received some fantastic coaching from Newent Hockey Club. This certainly paid off, as our team finished second in their group and qualified for the 3rd/4th place play off. They narrowly lost their final game, finishing 4th overall, out of the 12 teams which took part. This was a brilliant performance from the team. In total they won 4 games, drew one and lost two. Another highlight was Ann Cam’s gymnastics team qualifying for the
district championships and doing brilliantly to finish fifth out of seven schools taking part. It was a terrific achievement to reach the finals. Winter is of course the football season and Ann Cam took two teams to the annual Y3/4 mixed indoor tournament. The B team finished in a creditable 5th place, having had some very competitive games along the way. The A team played superbly and finished FIRST! They drew one game and won all the rest, not letting in a single goal. Winter is also the time for netball and the High 5 netball competition at Newent School. The Ann Cam squad played fantastically well winning 2 games and drawing one to qualify for the semifinals. In a tense semi-final the game finished 2-2 so went to sudden death. Unfortunately, the opposition scored on their first attack securing the victory. However, finishing joint third out of 12 teams was an excellent achievement. Winter has come to an end and in England that means the start of the cricket season. The village was very lucky to be chosen to host a NatWest Cricket Force Day. Thus on the 1st April, Dymock Cricket Club was proud to welcome England captain, Alastair Cook and former captain Mike Gatting to the club and many past and present Ann Cam

pupils were there to welcome them. The fact that many of our pupils attend Dymock CC has helped the school win several cricket tournaments over the years, including last summer when Y5/6 boys were runners up in Forest North cricket and Y3/4 boys qualified for the county finals. The exciting news, just in, is that Dymock Cricket Club's under 11s have been invited to take part in a cricket match during the interval at England's one day international against Sri Lanka at The County Ground, Bristol on Sunday 26th June. Given that six of the team of eight are Ann Cam pupils and all four accompanying coaches are parents of Ann Cam children it looks like village and school cricketing success are off to a good start for 2016.

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more Page 58
lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary
qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

A Weekend with Friends
What a wonderful weekend. The upside of running a B&B is space and enough bedrooms to have your closest friends stay for a few days, to cook for them and enjoy the chatter. Oh boy did we talk! Although I have a large living room we didn’t budge from the kitchen, well except for 3 visits to the dining room. It isn’t known as the heart of the home for nothing...informal, warm, aromas to get the taste buds going and, of course, continuous nattering. Friday night was lightly spiced chicken breasts with rice and salads; Saturday night the offering was a bacon, ham, chicken & egg pie. I was using my guests as guinea pigs due to the pastry being homemade and gluten free. It was rather good if I do say so myself! I do enjoy pies, savoury or sweet, making them and eating them. The nattering went on to midnight on both evenings. Sunday saw us do a casual walk (compared to the walk we’d done on Saturday... which was up Blakeney Hill to view the Severn) around the Sculpture Trail; more appropriately named by us as The Sculpture Trail NOT! We saw not one sculpture and determined they’d all been given the Cloak of Page 68
Invisibility treatment. Roast pork ended the day perfectly. Oh yes, and a very sharp gooseberry crumble finished us all off... simply made with a gluten free topping. Gluten free pastry is very easy to make from a standard pastry recipe. It’s the rolling out and lining the baking tin where the most care needs to be taken. You have to spend the time pushing the dough into place but it is worth it. I use a deep spring loaded baking tin as its easier to unmould when cool enough to do so with the least breakage. We at the Newent Club have organised our ‘Ride4Dave’ event in support of the national initiative, and in memory of our former President David Trigg. There will be fun for all with four different rides to chose from, a marquee, bar, pig roast, face painting, a bouncy castle, and more. Please come along and be part of this fantastic community fundraising event. We welcome all levels of cyclists from experienced
