Clive Gavin Bryant Clive Bryant sadly passed away at his home on 10th April 2017 Clive was born in Forest Gate, London on 26th June 1963. He attended Parklands Junior School in Romford, eventually moving to St Thomas Junior School and Brentwood County High School. On leaving Brentford County High School Clive took a job as a clerk at Midland Bank, following in his father's footsteps. It was during this period that he met and married Ann and they became the proud parents of their first child, Douglas. Clive had, on reaching the age of 18, found himself impressed with the 18 Plus Group and joined as soon as he could. He and Ann worked together with 18 Plus for more than 13 years by which time he had become the Training Officer. This was but one example of Clive’s involvement and commitment. Feeling he needed more of a challenge, Clive left the bank and took a job in the Family Court of the Civil Service in London as a Crown Court Clerk. In typical Clive fashion, it was here that he first started to update policies and procedures in the Family Court. It was whilst working at the Family Court that Clive and Ann became the proud parents of their second child, Hannah. With friends Mark Hewitt and Eugene and Angelo Rava, whom he had previously met while working at the bank, Clive formed the group “Square Root” but by his own admission, they only seemed to play in ’bedrooms’. Clive was a very religious man and loved the local St Margaret’s Church. In 1994, having seen the beautiful bells there, he decided to try his hand at ringing them.

This initiated a lifelong passion for bells. During this time he introduced an 18 Plus friend, Andrew Bond, whose friendship lasted ever since. Andrew says he always felt that Clive was the brother he never had and they always had a mutual respect for each other. When the family moved to Newent in 2008 Clive transferred his job to the Court Service in Gloucestershire where he continued to help sort and update policies and procedures. Throughout this time, Clive continued to give hand bell recitals to raise money for charities and also involved the local scout groups. Since discovering his passion for church and hand bells he never went on holiday without checking first that they had a local church where he could ring. Clive is probably best remembered for being the Santa Claus for Newent’s Annual Lights Festival, a role he performed for 22 years. Many may be unaware that he was Santa for many other organisations as well during this period and indeed would go out of his way to visit children as Santa at their homes if they could not get out. He never accepted payment for any of his appearances as Santa. He had such a generous heart. Clive’s active involvement with the community is evident by the number of groups and organisations he became associated with over the years. The list is extensive: The Beacontree Swimming Club Committee, Ledbury U8 Rugby Coach, The Local Sports Committee in Barking and Dagenham, The Newent Initiative Trust, The Town Team, Newent Lights Festival Committee and as Santa for the James Hopkins Trust (a place which was very close to his heart).

as bookings and AGM accounts but would also run group nights. As a very keen reader Clive enjoyed Science Fiction and ‘who dunnits.’ He was also a budding photographer and loved going to the theatre and pantomimes. He enjoyed a wide range of sports and took up coaching rugby when Douglas started to play. He started as Barking’s Head Coach for the U7’s and U8’s before working his way up to Cults Coach and on arriving in Newent began coaching as an Assistant Youth Coach in Ledbury. Along with Ann, he became a keen genealogist, vying with Ann to produce the best family tree for their side of the family. Unfortunately, Clive found it difficult keeping up with Ann and though he managed to go back at least 8 or 9 generations, Ann has so far traced a link on her side back to Sir Isaac Newton. Clive was a devout family man but also showed a passion in everything he became involved with – from bell ringing to dressing up as Santa Claus. He was very learned and was always very helpful to his children and willing to help anyone in need at any time. He had a very generous heart and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Anyone who knew Clive and would like to remember him can make a donation to the 1st Newent Scout Group or James Hopkins Trust in lieu of flowers. These can be sent c/o Smiths Funeral Services Ltd, Furnace Lane, Newent, Glos, GL18 1DD. - Written by Colin Thomas

Tape Up Your Webcam!

How to donate...

Does your PC or laptop have a webcam built into it? You should cover the lens with tape whenever you don’t need to use it. That’s not our advice; it’s the advice from former FBI director James Comey, who describes it as a simple but important security measure. It turns out that PC webcams are extremely easy to hack with malicious software, often without anybody realising, and the same software can disable the little LED light that’s there to let you know when the camera is on. There have been multiple cases of people using such software to spy on unsuspecting PC users, especially women, and while few of us have to worry about giving away state secrets the thought that someone might be watching us get dressed isn’t something we’re very enthusiastic about. If only we could fix every possible PC security issue with a little bit of black electrical tape.

Bolognese Meatballs Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

These delicious homemade meatballs are flavoured with basil and oregano then cooked in a rich tomato sauce. Serve with spaghetti for a classic Italian supper, or for a change pile on top of boiled rice or steamed couscous.

Ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

400g lean minced beef 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil 1 tsp dried oregano 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp virgin olive oil 500g carton passatta (sieved tomatoes) 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato paste 1 tsp sugar 400g spaghetti Freshly grated Parmesan, to serve Fresh basil sprigs, to garnish

TIP

Give the meatballs extra flavour by adding some chopped black olives, 2 tbsp Parmesan cheese or 2 tsp drained and rinsed baby capers. Page 10

Put the mince, basil and oregano into a food processor or blender with half the chopped onion and half the crushed garlic. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until almost smooth. Divide and shape the mince mixture into about 28 small meatballs. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, turning frequently until browned all over. Remove the meatballs from the pan with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to the pan and fry for 5 minutes. Pour in the passatta and add the sundried tomato paste and sugar. Bring to the boil. Return the meatballs to the pan and stir in 150ml water. Simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, adding a little more water if necessary. Season to taste. Cook the spaghetti in a large pan of lightly salted water for 12 to 14 minutes or according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Serve the meatballs and sauce with the spaghetti and top with grated Parmesan. Garnish with fresh basil sprigs.

Plan Your Car Hire This Summer Wherever you holiday, having your own transport can add an extra dimension to your exploring, rather than having to rely on excursions offered by your hotel or travel company. Even if your break is in the UK, hiring can ease the journey there too. A couple of years ago we caught the train to Cornwall; speeding by all the traffic jams was very satisfying and when we reached Penzance we hired a car and continued our journey. But if you haven’t hired a car in a while be aware that, since the abolition of the green paper part of the driving licence, in order to hire a vehicle you will now need to obtain a ‘check code’ from the DLVA website (www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence). You give the hire company this

code to allow them to access your driving licence information. These codes can only be used once, are valid for 21 days and are only for use with licences issued within the UK. If hiring abroad, check that these codes are valid in that country or if your photo ID licence alone is sufficient. If not, you may need an international driving permit too. Finally, if you are overseas, in the words of Michael Caine in The Italian Job: “Remember they drive on the wrong side of the road” (well, the right side actually). Joking aside, I found that once on the highway things were easy; it was at junctions and roundabouts that things got tricky. Oh, and I lost count of times I tried to change gear with the door handle! Enjoy your holiday motoring and have a safe trip there. By Iain Betson

What is Kinetic Chain Release? Kinetic Chain Release (also known as KCR) is a simple yet extremely effective system of medically recognised and approved, gentle joint mobilisations and stretches, developed and taught to those who wish to learn by Scottish Physiotherapist Hugh Gilbert. KCR brings the physical body back into balance quickly and easily, frequently providing a high degree of relief and even instant resolution in many cases from pain and discomfort caused by a variety of conditions such as Chronic back pain; Fibromyalgia; Carpal Tunnel Syndrome; Chronic Fatigue; IBS; Migraine & Cluster Headaches; Teeth Clenching/ Grinding; Snoring/Sleep Apnoea; Bloating; Tennis/Golfers Elbow; Behavioural Disorders; Weak Ankles; Knee Problems; Neck Pain; Plantar Fasciitis; Stress; Menstrual Pain; Recurring Hamstring issues and PTSD. Clinically evaluated in North

America by the organisation FOTO (Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes), who have 19,600 clinicians listed with them in over 4,200 clinics and 16.9 million patient assessment outcomes reviewed, KCR was shown to meet the "Gold Standard" in measuring rehabilitation outcomes much quicker than other methods, thus saving much time and money. Hugh Gilbert's book "The Early-Aging Workforce, which is very readable for the layperson, explores his "putting together" of the KCR sequence over a number of years while running a number of high profile clinics in Canada and consulting to medical insurance companies and big corporations. KCR has many benefits and can reduce Health Care costs significantly as it can take fewer sessions than related modalities to achieve the same or an improved result when looking at clinical outcomes. It is a simple procedure which is currently revolutionising physical rehabilitation, with apparent knock-on effects on emotional/behavioural issues, and with 900 clinicians predominately in the US and Scotland, then other parts

of the UK and Europe, it is likely to continue to grow quickly. Your Gloucestershire based therapist is Mark Harris based in Drybrook, who has trained and been accredited by assessment with Hugh Gilbert personally as a result of his own experience of the KCR modality when all other avenues had not produced any or lasting benefits or results. Having been diagnosed with chronic fatigue/adrenal fatigue related to complex post-traumatic stress from service in HM forces and then other public services, it was only on meeting Hugh and some of his training team that Mark actually made substantial progress and then found other approaches working with lasting effect. As a result of the dramatic improvement, Mark decided to train in KCR and to offer the service to others. He is looking at hiring treatment room space or can do workplace visits or home visits if sufficient space. For any discussion or to book an assessment and treatments please contact Mark on 07824449011 or 01594 543585 or email alderhollyltd@yahoo.co.uk.

Ever fallen over or been pulled over? Back pain, neck pain or arm numbness? KCR Therapy can help! It is gentle, non-invasive and safe for all ages. Benefits can include relief from chronic pain, increased energy levels and improvement in sports. The Knitted Bible

whilst learning more about God and his love for this world and its people.

May 2017 saw Newent’s St Mary’s Church finally have its turn to host the nationally renowned “Knitted Bible” exhibition. The highly popular exhibition has been touring the country ever since its creation in 2008 and will continue to do so well into 2018 and beyond. The next few months alone, for example, will see it going to Staffordshire, Gateshead, Yorkshire and Lancashire. For those who have not seen the exhibition or are not sure what it is, it is a series of 34 scenes from the bible brought to life by miniature knitted figures. The Knitted Bible originated in Hartlepool in County Durham in 2008 and was created by volunteers from St George’s URC. It started out as being only a depiction of ‘The Last Supper’ but so much enthusiasm was generated that it blossomed into the scenes we see today.

Mayor June Davies and Rev Simon Mason opening the exhibition

The Reverend, Val Towler, said at the time “Our hope is that in depicting some of the best-known stories of the bible that everyone who sees them will understand and enjoy them. They may even discover some detail that they had forgotten or never noticed

Scene from the exhibition: Jesus on the donkey entering Jerusalem

The project involved volunteers from the congregations and friends who have knitted, sewn and constructed the scenes and I believe that none of it would have been possible without their help and support”.

Mayor June Davies said, “I find the whole thing quite amazing and I am very impressed by the amount of work involved in creating the exhibition”. For more information on the exhibition please go to www.stgeorgesurc.co.uk or telephone Alan Woodhall on 01429 277176. - Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

“I must say I am thrilled with the coverage of my charity event in your magazines. I already had a response from people wanting tickets. Thank you so very much!”

“I am very pleased with the response we have had in the Newent Magazine and look forward to our ad going into the Cheltenham issue.”

“Looks lovely as always - very nice layout and quality. I do get quite a lot of feedback about the feature.”

Outdoor Relaxation by Pippa Greenwood

When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. So, concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax? Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. Its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening. A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that are perfect for early evening relaxation, as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. Page 18

If you have space for a goodsized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with freedraining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully

rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing flowers, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. Green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so include plenty of plants with good foliage, and, in shady areas, a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is wonderful. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink - and before you know it, you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of favourite gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Newent Dolphin Gateway Club Night Out The Dolphin Club recently treated its members and staff to another wonderful Country Dance which was held in Newent Community Centre. It was very clear from the start that the members and staff all enjoy this annual event. The music was supplied by the group “Kit and Kaboodle” with the caller being David Blick. Yvonne Lamb from the Dolphin Club says: “Newent Dolphin Gateway Club covers Newent and District and has been going for more than 33 years now. The Club is for people with learning difficulties and has members at present from 17 to 66 years of age.

contributions from local organisations such as The Onion Fayre, Newent Triathlon and the Forest of Dean District Council for which we are very grateful indeed. We have recently raised enough funds to take the members on holiday to Blackpool for a week which the members are really looking forward to. This is the 4th time we have had a Country Dance for the members and it is proving very popular so we are hoping to continue to keep it as an annual event.“ - Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

It currently has 36 members and the numbers are still increasing year on year. The Club is very popular and solely run by volunteers. It is financed by funds raised by members and staff through events and by donations and contributions. We raise most of the funds to operate the club ourselves through various regular events such as coffee mornings, skittles, rounders, cricket and creating Easter Cards. However, I must stress that we also receive great support, donations and

New Start’s New Start Gloucestershire cat rescue charity, New Start Cat Rescue, is now operating from new premises in Huntley. The charity is run entirely by volunteers and its aim is to rescue, treat, neuter and rehome any cat in need including animals that no one else will take in.

Members enjoying the dance with staff

New Start is currently working on enclosing the area with fencing and topping the fences to make them cat escape proof. At the same time, all the usual costs of caring for the cats have continued and kitten season is just starting which means an extra influx of cats with small additions to feed and care for. Any donations would be very gratefully received. You can donate via this link: https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/ newstartcatrescue#.T1Rued0ed Any amount, however small, will help the charity to help the cats. "New Start Cat Rescue is looking forward to its own new start in bigger and better premises and will continue its great work", says Lead Coordinator, Jackie. "Our motto is: ’Together we can make a difference’ and this has proved it!"

The move has been underway for about 3 months and funds are stretched now as the move has included the cost of relocating the pens from their previous home, renovating the inside of the new building and laying a large area of concrete to stand the pens on. The charity has relied on the help of its volunteers and various local businesses for which it is extremely grateful. Special thanks go to EESI who donated their time to lay the concrete. Home & Interiors The Art of Display

If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1 Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home. 2 Good lighting makes all the difference. Carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are ideal, but an adjustable lamp may provide a more informal, cheaper fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where Page 24

By Katherine Sorrell

the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture.

considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms. Asymmetry, however, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive.

3 Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together.

7 A great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object - but ensure there is plenty of space around it in which it can ‘breathe’.

4 Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most visually powerful, of all. There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. 5 When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group. 6 Every time you display more than one object, you need to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical,

8 Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf. 9 If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it. 10 Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. This is your home, not a gallery, and the important thing is that you love what’s around you.

Treasure Hunt by the Lake Freedom Leisure, in continuing to arrange local community-focussed events, recently held its Annual Treasure Hunt in Newent which was set out around the lake itself. Freedom Leisure invited all children (aged 13 and under) in and around Newent to take part in the Treasure Hunt in order to engage with the community and to provide fun for all the family. The event has been held for a number of years now and the number of children taking part is increasing year on year. The children, accompanied by adults, are given 15 clues to be discovered around the lake with the intention of enabling them to discover skills in orienteering and to encourage them to appreciate the wonderful flora and fauna that can be seen surrounding the lake.

This year proved an exceptional year as more than 50 children took part and every one obtained a certificate to prove they had completed the treasure hunt and were rewarded with goody bags. - Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Newent Town U16’s League Champions NTU16’s season came to a close securing their position as Cheltenham Youth League Champions with a 2-0 victory over Churchdown Panthers; ending on a seasonlong unbeaten run winning 13 of their 14 league games, drawing 1. Newent Town are extremely proud of their youth and wanted to give the players and their families a day of celebration in honour of their success. The club warmly welcomed Jack Rutter, Captain England Paralympic 7-a-side football team and former Newent Town player, to Wildsmith Meadow to present the league trophy. He shared some inspirational words with the lads; staying on to watch a match and enjoy the celebrations. The team also attended the club presentation night, where their achievement was celebrated along with the senior teams. We at Newent believe that this success on the pitch is helped greatly by the ‘family feel’ that is evident at every game; a togetherness that extends beyond match day. We are fortunate Page 26

to have this calibre of players coming through our ranks and look forward to seeing them progress through to our adult teams. A handful of our U16’s have already made their debut in senior football; most making appearances for first teams in Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division 1. The club wish to thank all our players and their families for their unrivalled support, Debbie Bignall (Club Secretary) and Jason Rickard and Hayden Rust (U16’s coaches) for all their hard work and commitment. Congratulations lads; well deserved!

Auction Anecdote Smiths antiques and collectables sale on the 12th May produced two star lots both of which had been coincidentally languishing for years in old barns. The top price of the day was paid for an antique Louis Vuitton trunk belonging to a local family and which was found stored in the upper storey of an old barn near Newent. The trunk had originally come from a large country estate in Scotland and was consigned for sale with a small number of other selected antiques. Despite its recent storage history the trunk appeared to be in generally good condition and luckily had no sign of woodworm - although there was a rather ‘moth ball and damp smell’ to the interior. Interest in the trunk was predictably strong from the moment the catalogue went online, especially since the estimate had been set at an enticing ‘come and get me price’ of £500/£700.Two telephone lines were booked and on the auction day itself, it was a long battle between online bidders, commission bids and the telephones. In the end, a final bid of £3,600 secured the trunk to one of the telephone bidders who lives in Guernsey, and as I write this it is awaiting a transport carrier to pick it up first thing tomorrow morning. The second highest price came from a large consignment of antique porcelain which had been stored in boxes for over ten years in a barn near Monmouth. The piece in question was a Chinese famille rose dessert service which sold to an oriental specialist who bid in the room against a number of Chinese buyers online and on the telephone. Interestingly one such buyer lived in Brazil and spoke no English and so one of Smiths staff had to attempt to converse in French in order to conduct the bidding. The final price paid was a very pleasing £2,900 whilst a similar pair of small tureens from the same source sold for £1000. Smiths next Antiques and Collectables sale is on the 16th June and has a special section for watches and clocks whilst entries are now being invited for their coin sale on the 21st July. For all enquiries please telephone 01531 821776 or see the website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Sports Leadership

written by Tom Cleverley and Marcus Hopkins

Christian Roberts, who used to play football for Wales. The talk included conversations about what makes a good leader/role model and covered skills that good Sports Leaders need such as the ability to show enthusiasm, confidence, listening skills and the ability to give clear instructions. After a good day of training, all students played three sports (Boccia, Volleyball and Curling) in rotation. Everyone was included which made it great fun. At the end of the day, both Tom and Marcus received their Sports Leadership certificates. As a result of this course, they were invited to put their new skills to the test and support the Primary School Panathlon at All Saints Academy at the start of May. Panathlons are sports competitions for disadvantaged and disabled people.

On 28th March 2017 two Newent Community School students, Tom Cleverley and Marcus Hopkins, attended Leisure @Cheltenham for an all-day training event called ‘Step into Sport’. Many other schools from Gloucestershire were also present at the event. The course was led by Josh Hanley and aimed at people with special needs and those who wish to work with people who have additional needs. The day was interactive and enabled young people to share ideas, develop skills and gain knowledge in a fun and practical environment. After an introduction, the teams were split into two and given their first practical task. Starting off simple, they had to throw a ball to one another from a short distance and then gradually increase the distance to make the activity more and more challenging. The task allowed all students with varying abilities and needs to be included. Afterwards, the STEP concept (Space, Task, Equipment, People) was introduced to the group which focusses on skills that allow for room and consider distance (SPACE). The group had to think about the type of EQUIPMENT used in certain activities, ensuring it was appropriate for the TASK and PEOPLE taking part in order to encourage total involvement. The next programme point was a talk given by

Tom and Marcus were responsible for showing the primary school students how to play a ‘Ball Target’ activity which is a great game for practising handeye coordination. The aim of the game is to hit certain targets/colours in order to gain points. Both students showed the eight different teams what to do and supported them in the task. Following this event, the Newent School received some lovely quotes from the Primary School teachers who were in attendance commenting on Tom and Marcus’ involvement in the events by saying what an “absolutely fantastic” job they did and commenting that they are “brilliant ambassadors for the school” as they were “very enthusiastic and encouraging”. Tom and Marcus have now been chosen as Sports Leaders for the Primary School Mountain Biking competition, arranged by Mr Edgell (Head of PE) which will be held at Newent School. In addition, they have been asked to be Sports Leaders at Hartpury College for another Panathlon in June. Mr Alan Johnson, Prinicpal at Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre, congratulated Tom and Marcus on their fantastic achievement. – Written by Newent School students For further information on Newent Community School, please call 01531 820550, email admin@newent.gloucs.sch.uk or visit www.newent.gloucs.sch.uk.

Let's start with a very serious topic this month: 15th June 2017 is designated as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and that is exactly what I would like to do – raise awareness of this haunting topic. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on our retired population. Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older people around the world. The global population of people aged 60 years and above will more than double, from 542 million in 1995 to about 1.2 billion in 2025. Around 4 to 6% of elderly people have experienced some form of maltreatment at Page 32

home. Maltreatment can lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological issues. Equally, as populations increase, the cases of abuse towards older people is also predicted to rise. Elder abuse can be defined as "a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person." Elder abuse can take various forms such as physical, psychological or emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It can also be the result of intentional or unintentional neglect. Every one of us has a responsibility to look out for each other and protect the health of our ageing relatives, neighbours and members of our community, so if you see anything you are concerned about, report it to the Safeguarding Adults board or ring the Police. ADULT HELP DESK Telephone: 01452426868 Email: socialcare.enq@ gloucestershire.gov.uk

Don't forget – June also sees Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Week, an annual awareness campaign designed to help the general public recognise the signs and symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. If you are suffering, don't suffer in silence! Call the Arthritis helpline where advisors aim to bring all of the information and advice about Arthritis into one place making it easier to access for everyone affected by the condition. Supported by the history of medical research, and informed by the experiences of people with Arthritis, the new helpline seeks to bring you the best information, tips and advice aimed to help you. Dial 0800 5200 520 for free today. If you would like further details on anything in any of my articles, please don't hesitate to contact me! Until next month,

Summer Fun at Pauntley Primary School!

the country for the last eight years. This fascinating exhibition contains thirty-three scenes from the Bible and over two hundred (knitted) characters! The children enjoyed looking at all the beautifully represented stories and completing a quiz to test their powers of observation and knowledge of the Bible. As ever, our wildlife team showed their depth of understanding and interest in our beautiful local surroundings in the Gloucestershire Wildlife Quiz. This year they just missed out on a place in the next round. Better luck next time! Stay & Play sessions for pre-school children have been very busy for the last few weeks and it has been lovely to see the children enjoying themselves playing with their friends and siblings. The sessions will not be running after half term, but our new September intake pupils will be coming in on Thursday mornings from 8th June.

The summer so far has been a very active time at Pauntley School. We are proud to say that thirteen Pauntley children took part in the annual Swimming Gala at Newent Community School, and twelve of them qualified for the finals! We also won the small schools’ trophy for the second year in a row – well done to all the swimmers! In April the hockey team competed in the Kwick Sticks Hockey Tournament at Cheltenham College for the first time ever and did the school proud. They just lost out to more experienced teams in the final but put in a battling performance and benefitted hugely from the experience.

Two of our Yr5 and Yr6 children – Zac Howe and John Mullinger – did a fantastic job representing the school at the Pauntley Parish AGM at the beginning May, talking about all the exciting things that have been happening at the school recently. Our thanks to them and to the Parish Council.

Our very active Friends have been busy working on the school grounds and held a gardening day over the Easter holidays to tidy up the garden areas and play equipment. They have also bought a new PA system for the school and two outdoor shelters. As always, we are very grateful to them for the huge amount of time and effort that they put into helping our school community. The Friends’ committee has organised this year’s Summer Fair & Sports Day on Saturday 1st July – all are welcome to come along and enjoy a great afternoon on our school fields!

At the beginning of May, the whole school went to St Mary’s Church in Newent to see the Knitted Bible Exhibition, which has been touring Page 34

Hartpury CofE Primary School – Making Music Matter! At Hartpury we pride ourselves on providing a broad and balanced curriculum. The school has high standards for its maths and English teaching and this is completed with many opportunities for children to engage, explore and enjoy other learning opportunities. As well as an amazing outdoor education program, arts’ week and newly funded whole class cookery room (due to open in 2017/18) the school has some amazing music provision. It is widely known that music has a number of benefits that go far beyond general enjoyment. Many scientific studies show the positive impact it can have on pupil wellbeing, stress relief and raising achievement in other academic areas. As such, Hartpury has looked to ensure children have plenty of opportunities to really explore and learn music. Our school, partly funded by our amazing Friends fundraising committee, regularly takes part

in whole class music tuition. These programs (that span a minimum of 10 weeks) allow children to develop an ability to play a musical instrument, read music and perform in a concert. So far our children have learnt to play trumpet and ukulele, and this year our Y5/6 are learning clarinet whilst our Y3/4 are learning violin. The school has access to a number of peripatetic teachers that provide small group and 1:1 lessons covering electric guitar, drums, keyboard, piano and flute. These bespoke lessons sit alongside our own recorder club and amazing school choir. The school gets involved in a range of opportunities that allow us to celebrate music more widely. This year our school choir, alongside 6,000 other primary age pupils, attended the Young Voices concert at the NEC – an extraordinary event that will live long in the memory of those that attended. Furthermore, the school took part in an iSingpop project which involved putting on two concerts for parents and creating our own CD!

This year we are also proud to celebrate the success of pupils from our recorder club. Hannah Stefanyszyn achieved Gold for her recorder solo at the Cheltenham festival and Imogen Ridge, and Hannah Stefanyszyn, achieved Gold for their recorder duet. Music allows us, as a school, to connect with the local community – our choir annually sing at Deanwood Lodge old people’s home and at the Hartpury College Carol Service. Both events are fantastic to take part in and very rewarding for all involved. I know the children felt very privileged to be able to give something back to the community at this special time of year. If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Hartpury CofE Primary. To arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher please feel free to contact the school office on 01452 700446. - Tony Larner, Head teacher

How healthy are your pet’s teeth and gums? Did you know that tooth and gum problems in dogs and cats are very common, with around 85% of pets over the age of three years suffering from some degree of dental disease, causing ill health and pain? In order to prevent dental problems, it is helpful to understand Healthy Mouth Dog how and why they arise. Pets are usually born with healthy mouths, with bright white teeth and pink (or pigmented) gums. However, over time the accumulation of plaque bacteria on the surface of the teeth, leads to inflammation of the gums – this is known as gingivitis (or gum disease) which is often accompanied by bad breath and also the accumulation of tartar on the surface of the tooth. If gingivitis is left untreated it will, in time, begin to attack the gum line and the underlying support structures of the teeth,

Gingivitis & Tartar Build Up - Cat

leading to infections and gum loss and eventually to tooth mobility and tooth loss. Regular dental check-ups are a key part of monitoring for dental disease and the good news is that if gum problems are identified at the early stage (where there are signs of gingivitis), a combination of a Scale and Polish (under general anaesthesia) and ongoing home care can make a real difference to your pet’s oral health.

Dental Scale under

Anaesthesia Following the professional clean, under general anaesthesia, there are a number of homecare options available. Tooth brushing is the

gold standard, but we understand that this is not always possible, so there are a number of dental diets and chews available. When brushing your pet’s teeth, it is very important that you do not use human toothpaste – this is because some of the ingredients in the toothpaste are harmful to pets. Does your dog like to play with tennis balls? The fluff on a tennis ball is designed to be abrasive (for better contact on the tennis court). Over a prolonged period of time, this abrasiveness can cause wear on the teeth. Why not swap your tennis balls for a rubber ball? When choosing any balls for your pet, is important to make sure they are the correct size for your pet – this will reduce the risk of injury. If you are concerned about your pet’s oral health or would like any advice, please contact the surgery. Tel. 01531 632276

Regular exercise is wonderful for both you and your dog’s mental health. It also helps to reduce destructive behaviour and boredom. The amount of exercise your dog needs depends on their age, health and breed. Active breeds, for example, need a minimum of 30 minutes aerobic exercise every day. Older dogs need to get exercise too, just maybe slightly less or at a steadier pace. Just because your pet has access to the outdoors does not mean they will be getting a sufficient amount of exercise. It is vital to actively play and interactive with them. Exercise can be done indoors as well as outdoors to keep your dog’s mind active, for example learning a new trick or playing games! While your dog is in the garden you could hide their favourite treats in various places around the house, then let them back in to begin their treasure hunt.

Your pet needs shade too, whether they are out on a walk or sitting in the garden, so; • Never leave your pet in the car • Make sure your pet is hydrated and that there are plenty of water sources accessible. Cats prefer their food bowls to be separate from their water bowls. • Keep midday walks to a minimum • Keep white-coated pets indoors during midday sun where possible • Take precautions on the beach (shade, no sitting on direct sand and limit the time) • Keep old or overweight dogs out of the sun. If you see either your dog or someone else’s dog with signs of overheating, please let them know and call your veterinarian immediately. Keep the dog cool with wet towels, cool water or ice to chew till he/she is at the vet. • The nice weather encourages us to get out in our gardens. Always check any sheds and summer houses at night to make sure cats have not crept inside to escape the sun.

Our Pet Health Club is a great way to keep on top of your pet’s health. The monthly plan provides savings of up to 50% on routine healthcare. Visit our website www.milparkvets.com to find out more.

grease a 33x23cm Swiss roll tin and line the base and sides with baking paper. Lightly grease the baking paper. Place the eggs and sugar in a large mixing bowl and whisk with a hand-held electric whisk until the mixture is very thick and pale and the whisk leaves a trail when lifted out – this will take 8 to 10 minutes. Sift the flour over the whisked mixture, and gently fold it in with a metal spoon until just incorporated. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin, tilting it gently to make sure the mixture spreads evenly into the corners. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes until the sponge is pale golden and springs back when lightly pressed with your fingertips. Whilst the cake is baking, place a sheet of baking paper on a clean damp tea towel and sprinkle with 2tbsp caster sugar. Quickly invert the hot sponge onto the paper and peel off the lining paper. Trim the edges of the sponge and roll up firmly from one short end with the paper inside. Leave to cool completely. To make the buttercream filling, beat together the butter and vanilla extract then gradually beat in the icing sugar until smooth and creamy. Carefully unroll the cooled cake and remove the paper. Spread the buttercream over the sponge then spread the apricot conserve on top. Gently re-roll and serve sliced.

Creation of a Symphony

I became interested in composing. This led to me writing a book about the process of music making. By the time I was in my thirties, I had married and had children who also wanted to learn the violin so taking inspiration from that and my developing love of art in paintings and poetry I returned to classical music.

Bill sitting in his study composing the Symphony Newent has a fascinating, varied and long musical heritage. From early 20th-century composer Rutland Boughton, writer of the opera cycle based on Arthurian mythos and founder of the original Glastonbury Festival, to Joe Meek's 'Telstar' and the Newent Orchestra, which has now been performing for a magnificent 77 years. The current Leader of the Orchestra, Bill Anderton, has played in this orchestra for 23 years as well as with the Gloucester Symphony Orchestra and other local music groups. It is fascinating to see how the process of writing a symphony unfolds from conception to the inaugural performance, and this could not be more clearly demonstrated than in Bill’s creation of The Newent Symphony. Bill says, “I believe it would be fair to say that the Symphony became a very personal project over the years. I recall that I first came across the violin when I was in Junior School at the age of 11. I was fascinated by it from the start and continued to learn through my school years. By the time I reached my early 20’s, I felt I wanted more so I took private tuition at The Guildhall School of Music. Even when working full time I loved playing the violin, developing and learning all the time. Despite this classical start, I did become involved with rock bands in the early 70’s and in particular Rock and Roll Blues Groups and indeed thoroughly enjoyed the classic rock festivals at Reading. However, my interest waned and I went back to classical music and produced my first major composition as a concept album in 2010. It was based around Alchemy in Music and performed by a 7-piece group, including a string quartet with electric bass and percussion. I suppose this was the first point at which

On moving to Newent, I joined the Gloucester Symphony Orchestra and subsequent to that the Newent Orchestra. Time was now my own so I found more time to compose and write books, some of which were published, though not all were about music. I have since composed two other orchestral pieces, the first being “Telstar Revisited” as an homage to Newent’s Joe Meek and a piece called “The Well Tempered Orchestra”. I found composing very liberating and thoroughly enjoyable and especially enjoyed writing small pieces for violin, flute, cello and viola as well as arranging and playing trios and quartets for popular old-time songs which, even today, we regularly play in Sheppard House. Since moving to Newent, I have always felt there was something missing and my drive to compose led me to look at Newent itself and what it meant to me. From my early days as a Rock and Roller, I have always had a desire to compose and have thus penned various pieces of music over the years. I have always had a yearning desire to produce a meaningful piece of music yet I could not seem to find the inspiration. It seemed a long time coming, however, after living in Newent for some 30 years, one day something made me look at what was around me altogether and it dawned on me what the inspiration was that I had been seeking. The inspiration came from seeing Newent in a different light. Looking at places like the Market House and May Hill every day seemed to make them ‘invisible’, however, when you really consider what Newent is all about you keep coming back to these. It makes you look at them differently and the inspiration for the pieces in the Newent Symphony sprang from this.

I spent many, many hours sitting at the computer. A symphony is difficult to compose at the best of times and I found I had to make frequent visits to each of the areas mentioned in the Symphony to provide continued inspiration to finish each one. This, coupled with running my own life, meant this composition took quite a long time to complete and some parts ended up being completely rewritten. Creating such an honest piece of music takes a great deal of energy with the achievement of perfection being the sole driving force. I have always been a passionate believer that music and art inevitably go hand in hand. In composing the Symphony, I also envisaged artists creating their interpretations of the movements to accompany and enhance the Symphony which was the inspiration for the Art Competition that would run alongside the performance. I was absolutely delighted that the Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre agreed to allow the inaugural performance of the Symphony in the School Hall as I believe the future of Newent’s Orchestra is invested in the children in Newent, and at the school, and it is important that they see what it takes to be in an orchestra. There are no words to describe the feeling of playing your own composition. Without the professionalism of the current orchestra members, this would not have been such a success and I owe them a great deal. I believe the Orchestra and Newent Symphony are an excellent advertisement for the town of Newent and surrounding area and a celebration of some of the wonderful aspects of Newent itself.” - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Different Types Of Holiday Insurance: Are You Fully Covered?

Buying holiday insurance can sometimes take a back seat when you’re planning to get away. It’s an important investment in your health and safety, however, offering protection and reassurance if something goes wrong when you’re a long way from home. The cost of holiday insurance depends on a number of factors including your age, the length of time you’ll be away, whether or not you’re travelling alone, and the types of activity on the agenda. A comprehensive ‘standard’ policy generally covers the following, although policies do vary: • Holiday cancellation or missed departure. • Theft. • Medical assistance. • Emergency repatriation. • Baggage loss or delay. • Other lost or damaged items. • Personal injury. So what other types of holiday insurance are available, and which might be suitable for you? Single trip/annual or multi trip If you only intend to take one break during a 12-month period, a single trip insurance policy would be the most cost-effective choice as long as it covers everything you need. Annual Page 54

or multi trip insurance is more suitable if you’re going away more than once a year, but there’s usually a maximum allowable duration which is generally 90 days. European/worldwide travel The expense of repatriating travellers from countries outside Europe, or obtaining medical treatment in the USA for example, is very high. Insurance companies have to take this into account when pricing their policies, so if you’re only travelling to Europe the cost should be lower than for worldwide travel. Take care to check whether a specified number of days are mentioned in the policy, as your insurance will be invalid if you exceed this number. Winter/extreme sports A ‘standard’ holiday insurance policy usually contains exclusion clauses relating to winter or extreme sports due to the additional risk of injury. Also, winter sports equipment is expensive, so you’ll need to pay more to cover it against loss or theft. Gap year/backpackers’ insurance Backpackers’ insurance provides cover for an extended length of time away, but there may be limitations specified in the policy, for example the number of times you can return to the UK. There could also be restrictions on returning home before the stated period ends, so it’s important to check the details. Unlike annual insurance where you can go away for several

trips during a 12-month period, gap year and backpackers’ insurance covers one extended holiday break. Family policies Family travel policies generally require all those included on the policy to live at the same address, and can be a cheaper option than insuring each family member individually. Some insurers offer higher rates of cover, or even free insurance for children under a certain age. Group travel Groups such as work colleagues, stag and hen parties, or school trips, where everyone travels to and from the same place, can use group travel insurance to save money. Some insurance companies offer one member of the group free insurance as an incentive. Pre-existing medical conditions If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you might be tempted to take a chance with your holiday insurance and not disclose it. This can prove to be a very expensive mistake, however, as the cost of repatriation is extremely high. Fortunately, some insurance companies offer policies for those already suffering from a health condition. Although it will be more costly than buying a standard policy, it’s impossible to put a price on peace of mind while you’re away. www.moneysupermarket.com/ travel-insurance/policy-types/ www.travelsupermarket.com/ en-gb/travel-insurance/medicalconditions/ www.askfinancially.co.uk/ travelinsurance/types-holiday. htm

Newent Symphony Art Competition Alongside Newent Orchestra's inaugural performance of the Newent Symphony, Bill Anderson, Leader of the Orchestra in conjunction with local artist Hannah Ferguson, organised an art competition to complement the 5 pieces of the symphony. Bill said “This is a highly personal project as I have always believed that music and art reflect and complement each other so well. This project was a way of showing how this could be achieved.” The competition was divided into two, namely Adult and Junior, sections with Picklenash and Glebe Schools being invited to take part.

it very difficult to decide on the winners but eventually unanimously settled on the following finalists and overall winner: MARKET SQUARE (Photography) “Shadows under the Market House” by Glenn Smith (back left). DAFFODILS (Textiles) “Trumpet Trio” by Rob Woodcock (back right). THE ONION FAYRE (Clay and Slate) “The Onion Fayre Pageant” by Kathy Priddis (front).

The Onion Fayre and produced some wonderful art which was subsequently displayed in Newent Library during March. The judges, as one, were very impressed by the entries from each school and the interpretation of each of the subjects. They found it very difficult to decide on winners in each category due to the high quality of the entries, especially considering the ages of the children so congratulated all those who entered on the effort put into the entries. The winners were announced as follows: Reception Class “Daffodils” Francina Justas-Avarinth

MAY HILL (Poetry) “May Hill Firs” by Roger Hare (back centre left).

Years 2 - 3 “Dawn over the Lake” Josh Stockham

DAWN OVER THE LAKE (Textile) “Sunrise” by Jane Wheble (far back right).

Years 3 - 4 “May Hill” - Adi Skroot

The mediums that could be used in this competition were not limited to just basic art forms but included, amongst others, photography and poetry. However, all were required to specifically take one of the 5 movements of the symphony as their inspiration in such a way that the art produced reflected and complemented the chosen piece.

OVERALL WINNER “Fayre Lady” by Francis Bicker (back centre left).

The movements were Market Square, Daffodils, The Onion Fayre, May Hill and Dawn Over the Lake. In the end, the numerous entries included paintings, poetry, textiles, ceramics, mixed media, slate and clay, sculpture and photography and by the closing date, there were more than 100 excellent entries in the adult section alone making it a very fierce competition. In view of the high quality and large number of entries, competition judges Hannah Ferguson, Town Councillor Roger Beard, Newent Community School Head Alan Johnson and Wye Valley Creates Magazine’s Kenny John found

Art Competition (Junior Section) Running alongside the composition and performance of the Newent Symphony and the adult competition, local artist Hannah Ferguson also invited Picklenash and Glebe School's children to enter the Junior art competition related to the symphony. Thriving local Artists' Co-operative launches second exhibition of 2017

England and Wales, bringing to life every season, every weather circumstance, every landscape creatively and imaginatively. His latest imagery takes in the starkly beautiful winter glories of the Brecon Beacons.

Artistree's 'Spring into Summer' Exhibition, which opened last month, is running until the end of June. The Ledbury-based artist and designer co-operative's second exhibition of the 2017 season is held at their atmospheric Gallery, upstairs within the timber-framed sixteenth century Ledbury Heritage Centre along Church Lane. The new works on display showcase the wideranging creative talents of this diverse group based throughout the Three Counties. Cheltenham-based sculptor Alice Shield offers emotional and spiritual insights into the female psyche through her languid figurative works. Cantillon Howell's exquisite glassworks are outstanding in form and design, he truly engages with his heart and soul in his thought-provoking works. Textile artist Marion Steele, from Worcester, looks to sea and the coast for inspiration, using the rugged structure of cliff and cove in different moods to weave and stitch evocative warm-textured interpretations. (Image: Marion Steele) The sea, with all its power and majesty, has also inspired artist Paddy Hannigan in his two large-scale paintings interpreting the elemental forces in a semi-abstract form accompanied by other works exploring different landscapes in varying mood, colour and mark making. From sea to land, artist Bill Denny uses a Cubiststyle approach in his artistic journey encompassing the intense relationships between form and structure offering colour and shape that sometimes throws the viewer off-centre but never fail to inspire and uplift. Photographer Brian Griffiths offers evocative images of locations across the borderlands of Page 58

(Image: Jane Foot)

Based in Newent, Encaustic Artist Jane Foot gets her inspiration from the written word. Here her new work stems from personal letters, as in her collaged work '1987', and from poems by Edward Thomas (one of the Dymock Poets, who died 100 years ago this year) in 'Invisible Threads.'

Anna Cumming's image is being used as the signature image for the 'Spring into Summer' Exhibition a stunning, vibrant interpretation of the Malvern Hills. Also exhibiting are Jen Janes, with her gentle and harmonious interpretations of nature and landscapes; Brian Richardson with his abstracted interpretations of physical and emotional life events, and Alan Richardson, with his collections and concoctions of metal and wood figures and artefacts: truly unique sculpture. The exhibition runs Wednesday to Sunday (and occasional Tuesdays) from 10.30am to 4.30pm, until Sunday 25th June. The Gallery is manned by the Artists themselves, with a warm welcome and the opportunity to talk about the artworks on display. For more information, visit our website www.artistree.org.uk and follow us on social media: facebook.com/galleryofartistree and twitter @homeofartistree.

Though the Gallery will be temporarily closed for two weeks, from 26th June to accommodate the Ledbury Poetry Festival, Artistree will re-open their doors for their third Exhibition of the year on 12th July.
