Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Welcome to the October issue of your local community magazine. As you can see, it is packed full with local events happening in and around the area. This is a fantastic feature, especially as we have another half term holiday to look forward to at the end of the month. Also, with Halloween just around the corner, it’s a time of great excitement for children and adults alike. Speaking of events – the annual Newent Onion Fayre, which took place last month, was yet again a great success. Have a look at the pictures on page 11 and see if you can spot yourself or someone you know and make sure to read Colin Thomas's and Onion Ed's articles telling you all about the event (see page 6 and 14). If you would like to add an upcoming event to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk and we will be happy to share the event for you. Finally, I would like to thank all our readers who support the local businesses within our magazine. If you have a local business and would like to be included in our magazine in November, please call or email us for more information. If you have never had an advert before, that’s no problem, we have an in-house design service and we’ll create your advert for you! Hope you have a great month and see you back here in November! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Newent's 22nd Onion Fayre Despite a little rain, this year's Onion Fayre went off very well. The start of the Fayre is always the Onion Show, which we understand has now won a prestigious national award, more information to follow. Organiser of the Onion Show, Chris Comer, said: ”I have taken over organising the Show this year and though I have always taken part in years gone by I was amazed at the high standard and quality of the more than 150 entries.” This was echoed by the judges, Martin Strange FNVS and Robert Higham, who added “This Show is always a very good show and still remains a well supported, quality show and it is clear that the standard has risen over the years”. The overall winner of the Best in Show 2017 was Graham Barratt who won the Three Shires Cup. Newent Community School Years 10 and 11 entered some of their onions grown from sets and their judge Mike Davies said: “The school students had clearly worked very hard to produce some beautiful onions making it difficult to judge, which is always a good thing.” This year also saw increased entries for the “Food made with Onions” section of the Onion Show. This year's judge, Pippa Palmer from Newent Community School (who also judged the Vegetable Characters), said: “It was a great turnout this year with some very flavoursome exhibits with the onion theme. It was difficult to find a winner. The onion vegetable characters, in particular, showed some amazing and imaginative talent.”

The opening of the Fayre was preceded by a procession led by the Mayor being transported in a Tuk Tuk with our favourite piper Larry Lindsay and a group of Leonberger dogs towing carts beautifully laden with flowers. The Town Mayor, Mrs June Davies, opened the Fayre accompanied by MP Mark Harper and other dignitaries, and the music commenced on the main stage with The Filthy Casuals, who had won the right to open proceedings in a competition at the “Live @ Newent Lake” event in July. Unfortunately, the headline group and tribute act Who’s Next did not get the chance to perform on the main stage due to the rain but this did not detract from excellent sets by Fayre favourites Roving Crows, the Lydbrook Ukelele Band and Curious Incident. There were three music stages this year. As well as the main stage there was the 2nd stage for local groups to perform on and an additional Acoustic Tent stage in the Food Village which was new this year, so there was even more to enjoy, with the weather only forcing the cancellation of the final groups. The extended Fun Dog Show, run by Forest of Dean Rescue, the new ’Funion’ Children's Zone down by the lake and the Fun Fair meant there was even more for the younger visitors to enjoy and do than before. The highlight of the Fayre, the 'Onion Eating Contest’, took place as usual on the main stage. This year more men than usual entered and the contest was even graced with the entry of the

Onion Eating Champions 2017 Alex Navari and Leanne Wright celebrating with Onion Ed.

One of the Leonberger dogs in the procession outside the Cargill tent

Onion Show Chairman who said that after having helped to put together so many Fayres in the past he felt that it was time for him to have a go. The men's winner, Alex Navari, did an exceptionally quick time leaving everyone, including the Fayre Chairman, in his wake. The women's winner, Leanne Wright, won again and it seems hard to find anyone to match her time. Yet again this year’s Food Village proved very popular with even more stalls filled with sweets, wines, ice creams, cakes, food from Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain and much more, than before. This year's addition of the Food Village Acoustic Tent made this area particularly busy throughout the day. Onion Ed commented on behalf of the Committee: “With a record number of stalls this year and all the additions such as the Acoustic Stage, a bigger Dog Show, the new Funion Zone, a larger Food Village and others, it all went very well indeed, despite the rain!” - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography Centre Top: Town Mayor and dignitaries opening the show Bottom: Members of the public admiring the exhibits at the award-winning Onion Show Onions Galore under the Market House 800 years after the first Fayre

Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood

A greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage

Page 8

to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and efficient loss of excess heat. Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the advantage that it can be filled with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’

are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in waterbutt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

New Police Community Support Officer Hello Newent Residents, My name is Joshua Griffiths and I am the new Police Community Support Officer for the community of Newent. I have been in the police force for 9 ½ years starting my career at Dursley Police Station. Since joining the police a certain phrase has always stuck with me during my career: ‘The Police are the public and the public are the police’. This is because it was obvious that a respected and co-operative relationship between the public

and the police is the main reason a community becomes a safer place to live. I have always worked towards this phrase and I personally believed it helped reduce crime and antisocial behaviour within the Dursley District. Within the current economic climate it is more important than ever to work together to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and I hope the Newent residents can help me in this task. My first task is to try and increase the number of Neighbourhood Watches we have around the town.

Neighbourhood Watch Neighbourhood Watch is about more than reducing crime; it’s about bringing people together and improving quality of life. It helps to build communities that are empowered to deal with local issues and tackle problems as they arise with the support of the local police or other agencies. The result is that residents often feel more secure in their own homes and the fear of crime is reduced by the knowledge that neighbours and friends are keeping an eye on their own property. Statistics have shown

that this has helped reduce crime and anti-social behaviour within the community. We try and make Neighbourhood Watch as easy as possible, and with the use of technology/emails, the time in which helpful information can be passed between a large number of households can be done within minutes. The police simply sends out messages on how to prevent a particular crime. All we ask is that

106.2 - 107 - 107.8 FM

our single point of contact forwards that message on to everyone within their Watch and if everyone implements the prevention advice, then hopefully this will remove the opportunity for the criminal. The simplest tasks can still make a big difference in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour within the area. If you are interested in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch, please contact PCSO Joshua Griffiths on 101, or by emailing him on Joshua. griffiths@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk

Onion Ed's Blog Hello, everyone! It’s Onion Ed again reporting on the success of the 22nd Newent Onion Fayre. Phew, what a day! Thanks to all of you wonderful people for coming out and making it such a great day, despite the rain. This year’s Fayre was bigger and better than ever and it is still the best party of the summer! The number of stalls was up and so was the footfall, despite the weather. I had been very busy before the day of the Fayre alongside all those who worked so hard to bring it to you but now we can all sit down and enjoy a well-earned rest. I must also say thank you to all those who once again gave up their spare to make the Fayre happen. It is purely voluntary and takes all year to get into place. Within a few weeks the team will have started preparing for next year already. And thank you also to all those people and children who had their photo taken with me. This is one of the best parts of the day. I’m beginning to think I may be famous now.

I could not resist showing you the person responsible for the Onion Eating Competition. This is David Blick. He was there when the Fayre David Blick with his onions was restarted 22 years ago and has been with it ever since. He is currently responsible for peeling ALL of the onions used in the competition, which number around the 40 mark. It’s enough to make you cry! This year I was surprised to see our Chairman, Andy Offord, having a go at the Onion Eating Competition. I thought he did rather Onion Fayre Chairman well though Andy Offord having a go!

Poetry in Newent The latest poetry event, entitled ‘Poetry and Food’, has taken place at The George in Newent, further showcasing the amazing local talent for serious and comic poetry. It was hosted by the now published local poet Samantha Pearse and included new works from Sam, a special guest and local poets who took part in the ever popular 'open mic’ spot. Sam tried out some new works amongst which was a very well worked sonnet entitled ‘Playing Chess’ and a short story Flash Fiction called ‘The Invited’. However, the most entertaining one was the ‘New Alphabetical Barbie’ which listed the new Barbie dolls they missed, all of which went down very well with the audience. Sam was backed up by local poet Chris Barber who is yet again back by popular demand. Chris also delivered

Page 14

some of his new poems like the poignant ‘Long Term Relationship' and 'The Bottle', however, the best one was ‘Get me out Poetry Organiser Sam Pearse of Here’, a very humorous parody of the TV show Love Island. Interspersed with this was one of the ‘open mic’ poetry readers called Chris Hilledge. Chris regularly attends these events and on this occasion chose to recite part of Wilfred Owen’s poignant poem ‘Dulce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori’, about the horrors of WW1. It was very moving, especially as we are currently remembering Passchendaele.

I doubt he will repeat it next year. It takes a lot to do this and it is great to see so many people joining in the fun and having a go.

Some of the wonderful children’s exhibits

I love to see all the onions, however, my favourite bit are the children's exhibitions at the Onion Show in the Memorial Hall. You can see from the picture how much work and imagination went into the entries and it’s so nice to see so many children involved. They were so good that I think they should all have received a prize. I am off to ‘hibernate' for a short while but I will be back soon so "hang on to your onions.” - Onion Ed

The ‘open mic’ session also included Barbara Brimble, yet again a local poet. She presented a number of poems, the best of which were her hilarious ‘Spicing up the Marriage (with Olbas Oil) and ‘The Hospital Bed’. To finish, the guest poet Alison Absolute took to the stage fresh from winning the Cheltenham Literary Festival Poetry Slam. She regaled the audience with Haiku poems, Dylan Thomas’ villanelle style poetry, the true to life 'Office Christmas Party’ and the wonderfully observed ‘Pensions – the calculation of final pension income to be derived from annuity’. The real truth about pensions! Alison said: ”I am amazed by the works here tonight. The whole evening was absolutely wonderful!" All the poets kept the audience totally enthralled throughout the evening and all left looking forward to the next one. - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

THE MARKET HOUSE

Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor Cllr June Davies August was a much quieter month for civic engagements but the highlight was being asked to officially open Tibberton Show, one I have frequented for many years as a visitor, exhibitor, judge and now Mayor. It still has the feeling of a typical village show and the weather was very kind this year. More of September's activities in the next edition. Regarding the proposed closure of Barclays Bank in Newent (also see item below), I had the opportunity to speak personally with Mark Harper MP, and with letters being sent to him, he is fully aware of the local feeling. Although by the time you read this he will have been in post for over a month, I would like to welcome our new Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), Josh Griffiths, to the town. It is his intention to work with the Council and local residents to gain a good rapport with all. Together with my colleagues on the Council, I look forward to working with Josh.

District meets Town - New Cabinet Members come to Newent Councillors met a delegation of cabinet members from the District Council for a walkabout on Saturday 5th August. Our councillors stressed the impact of the closure of Barclays Bank, which had been announced a few days earlier, and talked about measures that might be taken to keep the town viable. The District Council’s new cabinet said: "We intend to be a visible cabinet and

visible council. The cabinet members have visited the four market towns in the Forest of Dean to chat to residents and local business owners and their staff to find out what people need to make their daily lives better. This information will help to direct our work over the forthcoming months.”

Town Clerk - CiLCA Award Our Town Clerk, Katherine Noble, has recently been awarded the Certificate in Local Government Administration. She has worked very hard to achieve this award in a short time scale. The Town Council would like to warmly congratulate Katherine on managing to study for the award while continuing with a busy schedule of daily administrative duties as Town Clerk.

Barclays Bank Closure The Town Council is voicing strong concerns about the closure of the last bank in Newent both to the local MP and to the bank itself. A ‘Task Force’ of four councillors has been set up to find ways of making the views of local residents heard and to highlight the impact of this closure on local residents and businesses. Please contact any of them through the Town Clerk for more information.

Refurbishment of Changing Rooms The Town Council is delighted to announce that substantial refurbishment works have been completed at its Changing Rooms at the Recreation Ground in Watery Lane. These include new flooring throughout, new ceilings, a portable ramp for the disabled, and a replacement ventilation

system, fitted by a local firm.

The Listening Post If you would like to talk to us, two Town Councillors are always available at The Listening Post at 7.00pm, half an hour before Council Meetings, at the Market House.

FURTHER INFORMATION Information about the Council, its activities, contact details for councillors, agendas and decisions can be found on the website at www.newenttowncouncil.gov.uk. Readers with questions, suggestions or complaints can also telephone the Clerk on 01531 820638 or email townclerk@newenttowncouncil.gov. uk. Our office address is: 1st Floor, Newent Community Centre, Ross Road, GL18 1BD and we are open to the public from Tuesday to Thursday, 9.30am - 12.30pm and 2.00pm 4.00pm.

Newent Town Council – Serving the Newent Community Newent Town Council and Burial Authority is proud to work on behalf of Newent and Cliffords Mesne residents and visitors to the town.

“I am very pleased with the response we have had in the Newent Magazine and look forward to our ad going into the Cheltenham issue.”

“Looks lovely as always - very nice layout and quality. I do get quite a lot of feedback about the feature.”

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre GCSE Results 2017

Left to right: Harry Senior, Matthew Hale & Jordan James

Left to right: Jack Bliss, Hannah Wilde, Abbie Williams, Caitlin Nolan, Abbie Gwilliam, Megan Johnson and Lucy Buckley

Following on from our superb Post 16 results, which saw a 5% point rise on our results from last year, Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre is celebrating fantastic GCSE results which show continued success in our high performing school. This is a testament to the hard work by staff and students and these positive results will facilitate great life chances for so many. Students in this year group are the first to have undertaken reformed GCSE courses in English and Mathematics, which are graded on a new numerical 1-9 grading system. We are exceptionally proud of the students for performing well in these new more challenging GCSEs. Over a quarter of our students achieved the top grades of 9-7 in at least one of their English qualifications. In total, 22 grade 9s were awarded to students across the year group. This is an exceptional achievement since the new grade 9 recognises the very highest performing students from across the country. Within this global success, there have been many individual performances worthy of special mention. Many students have made extraordinary progress since joining Newent Community School and have achieved the remarkable outcomes listed below: Jordan James achieved 3 Grade 9s, 5A*s and 1 A Elisabeth James achieved 3 Grade 9s, 1A* and 5 As Caitlin Nolan achieved 2 Grade 9s, 1 Grade 8, 5 A*s and 1 A Harry Senior achieved 2 Grade 9s, 1 Grade 8, 5 A*s and 1 A Abbie Williams achieved 2 Grade 9s, 1 Grade 7, 3 A*s and 2 As Other highlights include 72% of students achieving grades 4+ (A*-C) in GCSE English and 70% achieving grades 4+ (A*-C) in Maths. 63.19% of students achieved 5+ A*-C grades with 58.9% of students achieving 5+ A*-C including English and mathematics. Over 16% of all grades achieved were either a grade 9-7 or A*-A. We are proud of all our students, many having made

excellent progress from their KS2 starting points. Superb results were achieved by many students in the traditional, academic subjects that make up the English Baccalaureate as well as in our vibrant practical, creative and performing arts departments. The overwhelming majority achieved the grades they required to take the next step in their lives, whether that be studying A levels with us at Newent, attending college, taking up an Apprenticeship or entering the world of work. We are committed to ensuring that all students achieve their full potential demonstrating high standards in all aspects of their school life from effort, work rate and ethos to conduct, behaviour and good manners. We strive to develop confident, informed and caring young adults who have self-belief and participate in their local, national and international communities; the school provides a wealth of opportunities for students to achieve these aims. Principal, Alan Johnson, said: “Our values as an inclusive community school where there are no limits on what can be achieved are reflected in these fantastic examination results. We are absolutely delighted with our GCSE results and are all immensely proud of our students’ achievements. The hard work of our students and teachers has been rewarded and these stunning results that will enable our students to move on to their A-level courses at our sixth form with confidence and pride in their ability and potential. I would like to thank all our wonderful staff for their hard work and dedication and also thank our parents and carers for their ongoing support for our school.” We are looking forward to welcoming our new Sixth Form students who are set to benefit from our exciting new Sixth Form building. Last but not least we are pleased to announce the dates of our open days for prospective new Year 7 students. These will take place on Tuesday 3rd October and Thursday 5th October (10.00am to midday) with our Open Evening on Thursday 5th October (6.00pm to 8.30pm). However, if you wish to visit the school please don’t wait, make an early appointment to see this fantastic school in action today. Well We All Knew That Didn’t We? (But it’s Worth Confirming it in an Official Survey) Apologies in advance to any white-van men reading this, especially if you are one of the 3% of the careful ones: in a TomTom survey of 1,000 UK consumers, 97% of the respondents put whitevan man bottom of the list of the safest and most careful road users. The rest of us shouldn’t nod with an “I told you so” smugness either. Drivers of what the survey describes as “high performance” cars (read three popular highend German marques) only scored 1% higher, followed by taxi and truck drivers on a joint 8%. Personally, why, with such a low score on driving skill, any of us get in a taxi is beyond me.

Using an analogy, if you want any job done well, you get the professionals in. They have the tools, training, skills and experience to produce good work. So you’d think a “professional” driver, such as one behind the wheel of a taxi would have the same? From the results of the survey it seems not. On the flip side, if you drive a small car you came out tops on the safety and courtesy scores with a 27% rating. Saloon car drivers were only marginally less safe and rude, coming in at 23%. This slap on the back isn’t confined to the size of vehicle you drive either, as next were bus drivers at 17%. So, in any future survey, if you want to score highly for your driving skill and politeness, it seems you should steer clear of driving a white German-built taxi van and opt for a small saloontype bus instead. Safe and polite motoring!

You are most welcome to join us at any of our Club meetings, please contact our Secretary. ONION FAYRE Despite the odd heavy downpour, the community came out in force to

support the Onion Fayre this year. Our Rotary Club operated another charity skittle alley, and thanks to the enthusiasm and kindness of those who visited our stall, we were able to raise £181, the nett amount of which will go to our charity funding, which supports many charities such as Sheppard House, the Air Ambulance and charities that help people affected by Prostate Cancer, Polio, Meningitis and more. Thanks once more for your generous support! NEWENT IN BLOOM COMPETITION

NEWENT COMMUNITY SCHOOL The Club continues to work closely with the school and was pleased to provide facilitators for the September year 11 student ‘Money’ session. In addition, we remind students that the Club has its Young Musician competition next month, followed by our Photographic, Christmas Cake Making, and Public Speaking competitions in December. Cake and Bake Chocolate and Orange Puddings Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream.

Ingredients: • 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, sifted • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice • 2 tsp orange zest • Custard or cream, to serve

Makes 6 Ready in 1 hours 30 mins

TIP

You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds. Page 26

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

Father Aidan retires after 22 years The parish of Newent’s Our Lady of Lourdes and St Michael’s Catholic Church said goodbye to parish priest Father Aidan after 22 years of service with a special mass and an afterservice goodbye party.

Chelsea Show Garden Designer and also a member of the congregation Julian Dowle added, “ We have enjoyed his leadership for 22 years now and it is with great sadness that we have to let him go. As a chaplain in the Gloucestershire Youth Service, he was hugely influential and a steady, authoritative spiritual pastor loved by all and we shall miss him greatly.” The Rev Pat Phillips, from St Mary’ Church, said “I have very good memories of the Salesians in Newent and Father Aidan in particular. I have known him for many years. His welcome at church and participation in ecumenical events over the years is much appreciated. We shall all miss him and I thank God for him as this new chapter in his life begins.” The Salesians, officially The Society of St Francis de Sales, is a Roman Catholic religious institute originally founded in the nineteenth century by priest St John Bosco to help poor children during the industrial revolution. It continues today with a dedication to young people and a mission to youth.

Father Aidan was also a member of the Salesians and his retirement marks the departure of the Salesian Fathers from this Diocese after 80 years. One of the many tributes Father Aidan given for Father Aidan was by Jeanette Teasing, “I recall memories of his gentle humour and of his humble caring ways and I especially remember his homilies, his teaching and the fact that he never needed to use notes!” In a dedication to Father Aidan, the Rt Reverend Bishop Declan Lang said, “I am forever grateful for Father Aidan’s presence in Newent, Blaisdon and the Diocese and for his tremendous dedication to his priestly ministry. Father Aidan was a dedicated Silesian as well and I would also like to thank the work of the Salesians over the years. I am sorry that they are not able to remain in the parish of Lourdes but I am forever grateful for their contribution and especially that of Father Aidan.” Mary Francis, a member of his congregation said, “Father Aidan lived by the doctrine ‘it’s all about love’ and thanks to his wonderful pastoral leadership we are now moving forward, prepared to face the future as a parish equipped to grow and flourish. We shall all miss him.”

Born in Ireland, Father Aidan moved to Malta where he continued his ministry before coming to Blaisdon. Father Aidan previously spent 25 years of his life at the Blaisdon School for Emotionally Disturbed Boys. In addition to his religious duties, he organised diverse outdoor activities such as archery, caving, canoeing, weightlifting and judo. Father Aidan said, “I am Father Aiden cutting his cake very sad to be leaving, which says “One more step as Newent has such a along the world I go.” good relationship with all the denominations. I have had such a marvellous time here and I wish everyone well for the future.” - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Home & Interiors Designing A Dressing Room

Many of us yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place, uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, with clothes storage, a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, it may be more efficient to turn a small room, part of a landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? It’s best to measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up

plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-toreach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To create a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist; or use off-the-shelf elements from DIY sheds or storage specialists

By Katherine Sorrell

and make it up yourself. The latter option is cheapest but less flexible, and may not make the best use of your space. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. If wall fittings, dangling pendants or floor lamps are in the way, inset ceiling spotlights are best. Fit enough to ensure the room is brightly lit, particularly if your finishes are dark. If clothes are screened off with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. Ideally, match the style of the dressing room and bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches, to seamlessly blend the rooms together.

Creating a dressing room area in a bedroom If you don’t have space for a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom instead. Use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pull-down hangers and tilting laundry baskets. Auction Anecdote Smiths Auction sale on the 1st of September was full of ‘Eastern Promise’ since it included a special section for Oriental items which is a very buoyant area of the market at the moment. Top price of the section was a wood block print of a nude by Japanese artist Shiko Manukata which sold for £1,950 to an online buyer in Japan. Other notable items in the sale included a very fine aquamarine, pink sapphire and diamond set necklace which made £3,500 to a London jewellery dealer in South Moulton Street. However, since the sale included a fantastic array of interesting items which sold like ‘hot cakes’ at the start of the dependably busy autumn season I thought I would concentrate my article on two of the smaller but more quirky results from the sale. Top of the list for my favourite items was a very cute but very tatty teddy bear made by the famous German manufacturer Steiff. Although the teddy appeared to have been ‘much loved’ he still had his distinctive signature button on his ear which immediately adds value for potential collectors. However, this bear came with an additional plus point which was an original photograph circa 1905 of a small child holding the teddy. Interesting although the child is wearing a dress, it is, in fact, a little boy since it was surprisingly common to put very young boys in dresses at that time! The bear sold to a local collector who bid online for £460. The second item I thought it would be interesting to talk about is a tinder lighter which was made in the early 18th century as a sophisticated way to light fires and candles using the technology of a flintlock pistol. The previous or cheaper method of making fire was using a tinder box containing a steel ring and flint which were struck together to make a spark to light the tinder. Using a tinder lighter with a pistol mechanism made the whole process of lighting the tinder with a spark much easier and quicker and they were in common use by the middle and upper classes during most of the 18th century. The example at Smiths was signed by an unknown London maker and sold for £310 to another online collector from Essex. Smiths October Antiques and Collectables Sale includes special sections for stamps and postcards whilst the November sale has a special silver and jewellery section just in time for Christmas shoppers! Community Connector News Hello all,

Ever wonder where the smiley emoji came from? Well, the first Friday in the month of October every year is World Smile Day! Harvey Ball is known to have created the smiley face in 1963. The world’s first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since. After Harvey died in 2001, the “Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation” was created to honour his name and memory. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is “improving this world, one smile at a time”. The Foundation, which continues to be the official sponsor of the day, promotes the message “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile.” October also brings colder autumnal evenings and the traditions of Halloween and Bonfire Night. Halloween can be enjoyable if you look forward to giving the local children a “treat”, but for others, the “trick or treaters” can be very scary to deal with leaving some of us fearing the evenings surrounding Halloween. Unless you live in an isolated area the likelihood is that you will have some children or teenagers knocking on

your door. This can be very annoying, but it is worth remembering that a lot of these children are friendly, and simply out having fun. If you want to stay away from the activities pop a simple sign in your window, it doesn't have to be posh, but could just read “no trick or treaters, please... Happy Halloween”. Or, if you wanted you could leave a basket of “treats” outside your front door so that children can help themselves without disturbing you. In the main, if you are not displaying a pumpkin, or if your curtains are closed, etc. trick or treaters will bypass your house and move on to the next one. If, of course, you would like to answer the door, don't forget to still be cautious, use your spyhole if you have one, and put on your door chain. Remember to keep your pets in and reassure them. Close the curtains and turn on some music or the TV to mask the sounds. Don't forget the loud bangs and screeches can frighten you as well as the animals, so be prepared.

Above all, stay safe, and enjoy any visitors you may have!!!

Labels’ colleagues take to the catwalk Colleagues from Labels Shopping Ross-on-Wye will be taking to the catwalk at the store’s charity Ladies Evening on Friday 13th October. “We’ve organised several very successful and well supported events like this over the last 12 months,” said Ailsa Macleod, Labels’ Marketing Director. “But the huge demand for tickets has forced us to find a far bigger venue – the prestigious Penyard House at Weston-under-Penyard.” “Our guests will receive a glass of Prosecco on arrival, enjoy a

presentation by a House of Colour image consultant and be able to talk to professional make-up artists, before they take their seats for our spectacular fashion show. We’ve been planning the event for months and the Labels’ team are all very excited about becoming models for a night and showing off our clothes on the fashion show catwalk.” The Labels’ Ladies Evening is on Friday 13th October at Penyard House, Weston-under-Penyard, just outside Ross-on-Wye. The fashion show starts at 7.30pm and there’s a free goodie bag for all guests. Tickets are only £5 and can be obtained from the welcome desk on the ground floor at Labels or by calling 01989 769000. Now that autumn is here, it is a good idea to start thinking about preparation for keeping your pet happy and calm during Bonfire celebrations. You may have noticed last year that your pet shows odd behaviour such as restlessness, excessive noise and hiding away when they hear fireworks but there are things you can do to help reduce stress for them this year. For example, keeping your pet indoors with the curtains drawn before a firework display starts and making sure that your dog is walked before so they are not frightened when the fireworks start. Remember that the calmer you behave, the calmer your pet will be, so try to act normally around them.

It is important for your pet’s health to keep on top of their flea and worming and we understand that each pet’s needs are different, so we offer free clinics with our nurses to discuss flea and worm treatment and to carry out weight and health checks. This ensures that your pet receives the best treatment and that we fulfil our obligation to see all pets at least every 6 months before veterinary prescribed treatments are given.

Christmas Lights Festival to feature camels This year’s Christmas Lights Festival will take place on Saturday the 25th of November. To celebrate the occasion and to add to the festive spirit, the festival will feature three camels ridden by Three Kings in the procession. Sweet Memories and Newent Town Council are currently running a raffle containing three prizes in order to find the Three Kings (who must be over 18 and under 14 stone/88 kilograms to take part). The three winners will dress up as the Kings and ride the camels at the head of the procession so if you fancy a ride on a camel and meet the criteria, why not give it a go? Tickets (£1 each) are available now and can be obtained from Sweet Memories in Broad Street, Newent, all the way up to the date of the draw on 18th November. The camels and Three Kings will be on display outside Sweet Memories after the procession and you will be able to have a picture taken with them.

One of the ‘King's’ camels

The camels will be provided by Joseph's Amazing Camels. As well as the procession, the Festival this year will also include the annual visit from Santa, a children’s disco, music from Filthy Casuals and Wake the World – both fresh from their success at the Onion Fayre, and events taking place in the Memorial Hall. More attractions may be added so keep an eye out for further information. - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Poetry Day at Pauntley School

We would like to welcome all our new Reception children into the school and we are sure that you will have an enjoyable and rewarding time with us here at Pauntley. Last month, we held a Poetry Day, and had a great day working on Edward Lear’s nonsense poem “The Owl and the Pussycat”. Masks and penholders were made, postcards were written and everyone had the chance to practice their very best handwriting! Parents were very impressed at the Friday sharing assembly, to see that all the children in the school were absolutely word perfect in reciting the whole poem. On 8th September the whole school went on the annual Blackberry Walk in the beautiful countryside around the school. Lots of blackberries were picked and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the morning, with some of the blackberries being eaten at lunchtime, and some made into a delicious flan the next day. We have spaces available at our school in selected years, and there will be a warm welcome for everyone who would like to come along and have a look round; please call the school office for more information.
