Pauntley - In the home parish of Dick Whittington - Have you found it yet? Pauntley CE Primary School is celebrating a “Good” Ofsted report after their recent inspection. Inspectors commented that pupils are "happy and proud of their school, they behave well and have a positive attitude to learning.” Pauntley has been serving the rural parishes of Pauntley and Pool Hill between Dymock and Newent since 1870. Just five minutes drive out of Newent town, Pauntley is a small village school tucked away in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by rolling fields and views to the Malvern Hills and May Hill, after which the two classes are named. With just 32 pupils on the roll, Pauntley has multi-age classes that value children as individuals, offering personalised learning and a family atmosphere that welcomes children in and helps them to grow. The Ofsted report states that: “Pupils make good progress across the school, reaching high standards of attainment that are typically above average. Pupils do well because the school takes exceptionally good care of them as individuals. Teaching is consistently good and an increasing amount is outstanding". Pauntley takes inspiration and it’s school emblem, from the story of Dick Whittington, who was born at Pauntley Court in the parish in 1354, he was no fictious fairy tale character, but an entrepreneur, who became thrice Mayor of London. This is reflected in the school motto “If we think it, we can do it!” Pauntley has small class sizes, where children are treated as individuals and they feel safe in the school environment. Ofsted concludes: “ The school provides pupils with an interesting range of subjects, topics and experiences which contribute strongly to their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.”

BBC filming in Newent The programme being filmed here was an episode of the Antiques Road Trip in Newent Auction Rooms. The featured presenters for this particular weeks episode were Paul Laidlaw and Margie Cooper who regularly appear on BBC antique programmes. Newent was the last stop on a week of visiting various locations with both presenters vying to sell the most antiques by value. Both did quite well, except Margie was upset at one point when an item she chose did not sell! Auction Anecdote Smiths have had a fantastic season in 2014 with some excellent results in all their sales from January to May. As usual there were a number of four figure prices in our last sale including £1,900 for a violin and yet another amber necklace which made £2,600.

However I am going to cover the human interest story this month with the tale ofa local charity shop who brought along a chipped little vase just to ensure it was not of any value. It had been put in the rubbish skip by one volunteer who thought it was damaged and so not worth selling - luckily however another lady pulled it back out and took it to Smiths as she felt it had a ‘certain something about it’. The vase was immediately identified by valuer Rita Kearsey as a highly collectable piece by Pilkington’s called a Lancastrian vase due to the luminescent glaze. In the late 19th century Pilkington’s intended to have a coal mine on their site at Clifton near Manchester but after failing to find any decent coal deposits looked around for something to do with all the good quality red clay they had found there instead. After deciding it was the wrong type of clay for bricks they enlisted the help of a chemist called William Burton who had worked for Josiah Wedgwood. William set up a tile factory in 1892 and as he was a big fan of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement he started to make tiles and then later pottery items in the Arts and Crafts style using famous designers such as Charles Voysey and Walter Crane. Decorative pottery production ceased in the 1930’s and today Pilkington’s Lancastrian Ware is rare and highly sought after. The vase was an early example and was therefore estimated at £60/£80 despite the damage and on the auction day it was sold for £140 – making a very happy ending for the charity shop and hopefully a safe new home for the little vase.

community VICTORIOUS NEWENT BRING THE SENIOR VASE BACK TO TOWN “Ain’t no stopping us” – the slogan on the Green Army supporters t-shirts as they headed off in their droves to Twickenham last month – 9 coaches set off from Newent along with many others making their own way to the hallowed turf of Twickenham. What a day! What a game! What a season! Newent RFC went to Twickenham to win and they did exactly that with a 20-13 win over Yorkshire side Yarnbury – a close game made for a great game for supporters to watch – albeit a little nail biting given the close score. At full time the unmistakable roar of “GREEN ARMY” from over 600 Newent supporters resounded around Twickenham – or as some now fondly say, “Newent's second pitch”. William Anderson who plays for the U10s was chosen as the mascot for the game and what an experience for him - something I am certain he will remember for life!

NOT AT ALL ! not to be doing something to improve our health and fitness – and it’s a great way to meet new people.

On Sunday 11th May four of the Newent RFC ladies XV “Green Goddesses” walked out on to the pitch in the county game playing at home (Gordon League) against North Midlands . A great game and Gloucestershire took the win 31-3. Fantastic efforts by Meg Reid, Chloe May, Dorrie Morley and Carla Leigh Brown. Also a shout out to the 2 other Forest players from Drybrook – Jess Hunt and Ellie Underwood – this is Ellies first season with Drybrook and straight into County rugby which is pretty impressive. Carla was nominated Gloucestershire forward of the match and Drybrook's Ellie Underwood was nominated back of the match – keeping it in the Forest – well done ladies! The ladies then followed that with a second win the following week against Buckinghamshire.

ON THE UP FOR NEWENT AFC – AGAIN! After a high voltage day of rugby the celebrations soon got into full swing back in Newent, where the supporters and other locals cheered the superstar local celebrities off the bus. The atmosphere was electric and everyone had a permanent smile on their face – as the photos show! Celebrations ensued and the lads were still celebrating the next morning!

Local man Gary Brown has recently qualified as an “Insanity UK instructor” and Gary certainly knows all about improving himself having lost an amazing FIVE STONE – a lot of hard work and determination has got him this result and by running the Insanity classes, Gary is now there to help the rest of us get fit and more importantly keep fit. Gary not only runs these classes in Newent but you’ll see out there pounding the streets in his running shoes.

So for all of us looking to do that annual “pre-holiday diet”, why not take up a new activity or change the one you already do for something a little different to mix it up. Perhaps take on a challenge to give you something to aim for? Often our motivation can wane and a goal really does keep the momentum going. Combine that with some sensible healthy eating and you’ve got the combination right to ensure you burn more energy than you take in! Looking around at the local produce available in Newent it isn’t difficult to stock up on good quality meat, cheese, fruits and veg to make up some great meals for the whole family.

Newent win at TWICKENHAM NEWENT completed a rare double in the RFU Senior Vase thanks to a second half comeback at the home of English rugby.

NEWENT 20 - YARNBURY 13 In front of their Green Army of fans at Twickenham, the Goatley brothers Joe and Barney clinched two secondhalf tries to win the title after the club won the Junior Vase last season. Longlevens set the tone for what was a spectacular day for Gloucestershire in south west London. with a 23-12 win in the Junior Vase against Rugby Lions.

Yarnbury were then penalised for holding on and Paterson booted the kick deep into the 22.

Captain Tristan Veale was sinbinned within three minutes of play but that did not stop Newent getting off the mark first with a well-struck penalty from Ross Webb in the sixth minute.

Again the men from Yorkshire could not stem the green tide and Goatley’s brother Barney also crashed over with Paterson converting with just fourteen minutes remaining. (20-6)

But it was Yarnbury who threatened the Newent try-line and were it not for a forward pass could have crossed the whitewash.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes, a Yarnbury driving effort after Newent were penalised in the line-out gave the Yorkshire club their first try, as James Barrett grounded the ball.

Carl Paterson booted Yarnbury level in the 21st minute before an electrifying kick chase from winger Ellis Gomarsell ignited the Yarnbury fans, but Newent’s Richard Merrett was first to the ball.

Yarnbury knocked on in their final attack and jubilant scenes ensued for Newent and their army of dedicated fans.

As chants of ‘Green Army’ rang around the Twickenham arena, superb handling along the back-line almost earned Newent a try, as Merrett offloaded to Dominic Matthews, who set up Brett Gardner. But Matthews knocked on in the tackle and the men in green saw a chance go begging.

lSmear your hands and the work surface with oil. lDivide the dough into 4 equal portions.

lFlatten each ball as flat as possible into a circle.

lFold the circle like an envelope and then flatten again.

New vision for joint working – expected savings in excess of £55m over ten years. An innovative four-council partnership is announcing its vision for transforming the way its services run in order to deliver more efficiency savings and protect public services. Leaders at Cotswold, Forest of Dean and West Oxfordshire District Councils and Cheltenham Borough Council have set out their ‘2020 Vision for Joint Working’ for consideration by each Council’s Cabinet. They are proposing: “Four Independent Councils determining their own policies, priorities and decisions supported by a small number of expert advisors who commission and monitor services, either from the private and voluntary sectors or from local authority-owned service delivery companies” If approved, the four authorities would establish a jointlyowned local authority company to provide the services required by each individual council. The move is expected to save in excess of £55m over 10 years, and it comes in response to continued financial pressures that local authorities face. The proposition enables the councils to protect valued frontline services, whilst they will each remain as independent authorities with their own elected councillors representing local people. Cllr Lynden Stowe, Leader of Cotswold District Council, said:

and running costs of the councils we can spend a bigger proportion of our budget on delivering the frontline services our communities need, while keeping the democratic decision making of local councillors intact. Local services, local democracy, lower costs … with the additional benefit of greater resilience.” Cllr Barry Norton, Leader of West Oxfordshire District Council, commented: “The councils already have a track record of developing innovative arrangements irrespective of traditional district, county or regional boundaries. This approach builds on that firm foundation and provides a very strong basis to support a new model for local government. It will provide efficient collective shared officer support arrangements, able to provide distinct and bespoke advice to a cluster of independent councils focused around existing district council localities without the need to consider political mergers. This model is scalable both in terms of numbers of partners but also in the scope of services.” Cllr Steve Jordan Leader of Cheltenham Borough Council concluded: “The development of our current shared services has enabled a strong degree of trust and confidence between the four partners at a member level. It seems both timely and logical to build on these strong foundations and plan for further joint working arrangements with existing partners. Importantly, these arrangements would ensure councils retain independent decision making that reflects local needs.”

Newent Local History Society At the May meeting of the Society Tim Mars of Stroud Civic Society gave an illustrated talk on Prefabricated Housing, once described as ‘Palaces for the People’ because of the very advanced fixtures and fittings. The following is a selection of interesting facts presented: • Although the boom in prefabs was precipitated by shortages of materials, skilled labour and housing after World War 11, there had been much interest many years previously; two examples are the Robert Raikes House in Gloucester and the very futuristic designs of the American Buckminster Fuller. • ‘Tin Tabernacles’ were also early examples of metal prefab churches, one of which was in Newent. • Prefabs basically applied assembly line production techniques to housing.

• During the post war temporary housing programme 18 different designs of prefab were developed, but with a common foundation it was possible to combine the advantages of diversity with standardisation.

• Prefabs were intended to last 10 -15 years but many still exist today especially where tenants exercised the ‘right to buy’.

• Prefabrication techniques are used today in such things as Portakabins, but also as component parts of modern buildings such as the London Gherkin.

• Although it was planned to build 500,000 prefabs in the post war era, nowhere near this total was reached, principally because they were very expensive (more than double the cost of conventional housing). • There are many examples of prefabs, in museums and private ownership, where many have been adapted to become ‘cottages with a garden’ by the skilful use of cladding. Hobbies Why the Sewing Bee is Buzzing Louder Than Ever It’s always sensible to seek expert advice and in larger UK cities you’ll find plenty of courses available, priced from around £40 upwards. However, if you live in a rural area you may find it more difficult to locate a suitable class: www. thesewingdirectory.co.uk has a list of local classes and sewing groups which you can search by county.

Perhaps it’s all part of the cult of nostalgia we’re experiencing at the moment, including shabby chic, home baking and handmade household accessories. Sewing is suddenly cool again, and that vintage Singer sewing machine that your mother banished to the garage all those years ago has recently returned to reclaim its place as a must-have item in UK homes. With TV programmes such as “The Great British Sewing Bee” commanding audiences of 2.7 million, it’s clear that sewing has once again captured the public’s imagination. Of course, the recent climate of austerity has played its part in this revival. Although shops selling ultra-cheap, disposable fashion have flooded the market with low quality, mass-produced garments for many years now, customers are slowly beginning to realise that cut-price fashion can be a false economy. Making your own clothing is the answer to all those concerns about quality and durability, plus there’s no better way to

express your personality than to source your own fabrics, creating a fashion look that is unique to you. The old-style sewing machines mentioned at the beginning of this article are available to buy on Ebay, with prices ranging from £40 to £200 (for models incorporating a table). Alternatively you can purchase a new machine starting from around £200. As it’s difficult to predict exactly what you’ll want to make in the future, it’s best to start off with a brand that provides a basic model to which you can add accessories (allowing you to create ornate stitching or overlocking) over time. When you’ve bought your machine the next step will be to get hold of a simple pattern and some fabric. Purchasing fabric can be expensive and as you stand there, with your brand new sewing shears poised for action, you may wish that you had someone on hand to guide you through your first attempt at making up a garment.

Sewing classes are a great place to pick up valuable tips, but not everyone can afford to pay for lessons and sometimes learning at home is the only option. If you can’t get away you can always explore the many helpful, explanatory blogs and ‘how to’ videos for the beginner available on the internet, as these don’t cost anything and are almost as good as face-to-face tuition. The sewing revival may have been driven by nostalgia for the ‘good old days’, but it’s underpinned by the growing realisation that skills in tailoring and making can be of real value to cashstrapped families today. Bring Me Sunshine Katherine Sorrell looks at what you should consider when planning to build a conservatory. Kit or bespoke? Kits tend to be cheap and DIYfriendly, as most of the parts (usually a PVCu frame and polycarbonate roofing) are precut and pre-drilled ready for installation. Bespoke designs will cost more, but you’ll have something tailored to your individual requirements. Size, siting and aspect For a useable room allow at least 8-10 metres of floor area and consider how the space will complement your property and garden. How will your conservatory adjoin the house? Is there a large enough exterior wall, and will you have to avoid obstructions such as trees or outbuildings? Try to place it facing east or west, as northfacing conservatories tend to be cold, while south-facing ones can overheat. Walls and frames Traditionally, conservatories are built onto a 600mm high ‘dwarf’ wall made of brick or stone, to match or complement your house. More recently, fully-glazed structures have become fashionable, offering a contemporary look and even more light. The most popular choice for the wall framework is PVCu, a material that is light, strong, requires little maintenance and can be system-built quickly and easily. Bespoke conservatories are generally made in hardwood, which can Page 34

be carved into slender, intricate designs and suits older properties, though it is more expensive and requires regular maintenance. Glazing Double or triple glazing is essential and the best glazing combines a low-emissivity coating that reflects heat back inside, and argon-gas filled units for maximum insulation. In a bespoke conservatory, you can specify tinted, etched, obscured, anti-sun, fire-resistant, self-cleaning or other specialist glass at a price. For roofs, choose from glass or polycarbonate panels. The latter are light and strong, cheap, and quick and easy to fit, but tend to obscure light, particularly at thicknesses that achieve the same thermal performance as double glazing. Near trees, they may also suffer from algae growth. Heating Heating is essential and, to comply with building regulations, it must be independent from your main system. You could place radiators against the dwarf walls or install under-floor heating, either warm-water pipe or electric cable, or you may consider electric trench heaters, hidden under grilles around the edges of the floor. Where there’s room for a chimney or flue you can install an open fire on the wall that was the outside of the original house.

Ventilation In the height of summer you’ll need a cool waft of air. Roof vents may be opened manually (with long-armed winding gear) or electrically, or may even be thermostatically controlled to open and close at the necessary time. Trickle vents in the roof or side windows are useful, allowing warm air to flow out as necessary. You may also wish to add a central ceiling fan. Shading Blinds ensure privacy, provide shade from direct sunlight and reduce the build-up of heat. If heat is a problem, try solar-reflective roller blinds. Otherwise, the options include pleated fabric, pinoleum Roman blinds and slatted Venetian blinds. Take your time choosing a look that’s right for you; consider how easy they are to clean and whether you want to open and close them with pull-cords, rods or via remote control. Do I need permission? Many small, domestic conservatories don’t need planning permission, but there are conditions. Check www. planningportal.gov.uk and consult your local planning authority.

We can help with transport through our very active Dial-a-Ride Service and we have a team of volunteer car drivers to help you attend appointments from hairdressing to hospital. One of our principal objectives is to reduce social isolation and to enable people to come together, make friends and to have a good time. Mr Green in the Conservatory By Derek Thompson A leaky, uninsulated porch is a friend to no one. But a demolished porch replaced by a mini-conservatory = firewood + bricks + glass for cold frames + indoor space for more plants (especially welcome since our greenhouse had to go). “So what do you think?” Anne pointed to her makeshift plan on the kitchen table. I thought we could fit at least a dozen plants on the shelves, plus five trays of seedlings on the floor, and still be able to sit down. That humble pencil and paper outline was the beginning, but it was a long and fretful journey to the finished conservatory. Low points included our builders doing a two-week vanishing act, them breaking the lid on our chiminea on the first day, and failing to put up 90-degree angle walls - twice. The wood and glass conservatory, however, was - and is - spectacular. Mind you, someone else supplied it. And, once the floor was tiled and those tantalising shelves were slated, we were ready to go. The cat was the first visitor to the conservatory and, to Page 40

be honest, didn’t seem that impressed (although she didn’t know how much we’d borrowed to pay for it). Operation Hothouse went into action. We started with surprise tomato plants - in that they turned out to be a yellow variety - swiftly followed by Fasold green beans and Kennedy mange tout. The results were impressive, but top billing went to the California Wonder sweet peppers. Never having grown them before, I erred on the side of excess and planted 16. The 12 that thrived also gave us ample camouflage from walkers who passed up the lane. As the peppers grew - and believe me, they grew a lot - we harvested, swapped and even froze a few (depipped and sliced first). And still they kept coming. On rare, hot days, the room smelt like a sweet pepper sauna. I became so convinced of the conservatory’s powers that I brought in the sweet potato plant, which was ailing. It rallied a little, but when it came to harvest time I felt that the label’s bumper crop guaranteed had overstated

the case. Seven sweet potatoes might be good for one plant, but not if they’re all the size of a 20p piece. Naturally, we need to water everything regularly and employ judicious temperature control with the windows. Which also means that flies and wasps are frequent visitors. But hey, that’s nature for you. And it’s a dinner guest or two for the spiders, which moved in almost immediately. Going forward, we want to reduce volume and increase variety (because even homegrown peppers can become a little samey). Chilli peppers are next - I’d love to grow Bhut Jolokia - reputed to be the world’s hottest chillies. Anne is a tomatophile (I like the plants, but can’t stand the taste of the fruit), so we’ll definitely look a mixture of plentiful and interesting. The conservatory has already been nursemaid to a range of herbs and seedlings. It’s not only an extension of the house, but also an extension of our lifestyle. Anne would like more space to sit down in comfort. Or, at the very least, be able to find the cat among the indoor undergrowth.
