FOREST OF DEAN DISTRICT

Gentle Walks

We know that walking and exercise in general really helps improve circulation, promotes restful sleep and can enhance moods. We also believe that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can enhance general feelings of well-being. We have therefore joined with Orchard Trust in providing walks for people with dementia and their carers to get outside and meet like-minded people, these walks being suitable for those who use walking aids & chairs. The FOD Walking for Health program also organizes regular walks throughout the Forest, several of which are classed as easy and offer between 10 minutes and one hour of walking. Those with dementia and their carers are welcomed, though it is advisable to phone the Walk Leader in advance to check that the walk will be suitable for your needs.

All the walks listed below aim to finish with a ‘cuppa’ & a biscuit, we've earned it after all!

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Welcome to the September issue of your Local Community Magazine. It won’t be long now until the children are all back at school. Is that a sigh of relief I can hear or do you wish the holidays could be a little bit longer? I usually can’t wait for school to start again but this year I could have done with a few more days as we’ve been so busy! As you can see when paging through the magazine, we’re jam-packed with local businesses and local events happening in and around the area. If you would like to add your business to the magazine or an upcoming event to our “What’s on” section, please email office@ glosdirectories.co.uk for more details. A date for your diary is The Newent Onion Fayre which takes place on Saturday 9th September this year. The popular one-day street festival attracts around 15,000 visitors every year and you can once again look forward to lots of live music, entertainment, competitions, food, stalls, exhibitions, children’s events and much more (for more information, read Colin Thomas's article on page 14 and Onion Ed's latest blog on page 32). Have a great month and see you back here in October! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Houseplants Go Home by Pippa Greenwood

Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases - it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, Page 8

newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant environmentallyfriendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www. pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect-your-crops. Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball - this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure. When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the

same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking. Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres and supermarkets now - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis)? I treated myself to a couple this summer and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre A-Level Results Summer 2017

Left to right: Mr Ian Britten (Deputy Director of Sixth Form), James Nunn, Elisha Fenton, Jodie Fletcher, Mr Alan Johnson (Principal), Harriot Farmer, Amber McKenzie, Miss Lissa Rogers (Director of Sixth Form) Left to right: Cerys Barber, Chloe Cullen, Amy Malcolm, Rebecca Millar, Eliza Taylor, Aidan Horton, Conor Nolan

2017 has been another very successful year for our Year 13 students with a 98% pass rate at A-Level as well as in a range of other courses available at the school in the Sixth Form. It is particularly encouraging that we have seen an increase of 5% points in our A*-C pass rate. We are very pleased with all our students performing well against targets based on their prior attainment. Eliza Taylor is to be congratulated on a set of outstanding results, she achieved A*AAB. In addition, Conor Nolan achieved AAAB and will be going to study at Loughborough University. Sophia Von-Tiedemann did remarkably well in 5 subjects with English as her second language; she achieved an incredible A*ACCC and is going to Birmingham University to study Nuclear Engineering. Guy Prosser is heading to Westminster to study Film having achieved impressive results: A*A*C. Chloe Cullen achieved AAB and has taken up a place at Manchester University to study Biology. Other very successful students include Ellie Hathaway who will study Psychology at Swansea University after securing A*BB. Rebecca Miller achieved ABBB in her 4 subjects and will go on to study Drama and German at the University of Kent. Charlotte Hayward will be studying Bio-Chemistry at Nottingham Trent University after achieving her impressive ABCC grades. In addition, Cerys Barber and Joe Tibbles both achieved ABC grades and will also be going to University to further their studies.

There are many other individual success stories, too many to mention them all. Emma Jones is one of a growing number of students taking up apprenticeships; she has secured a fantastic opportunity in the Pharmacy department at Higham Surgery. Students entering employment include Alanna Bee who is now working within the NHS as an Administration Officer at Gloucester Royal Hospital. It has been a great year and needless to say we are very proud of all of our students and wish them every success as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. We are looking forward to welcoming our new Sixth Form students in September who are set to benefit from our exciting new Sixth Form building. We are happy to accept late applications for September 2017. Newent Onion Fayre

The Newent Onion Fayre, now in its 22nd year, is hailed Gloucestershire’s greatest, largest and most successful free one-day festival. This year, it will take place on Saturday the 9th of September 2017. It first started with a charter granted to Newent by King Henry III in the 13th century and has since become a street festival of food, drink, music, events, exhibitions, activities and merriment which attracts more than 15,000 visitors every year. There is plenty to see and do with over 120 stalls around town, a large food hall, two stages for live music and a separate ‘Funion’ area near

the lake for children. The Fayre has been featured on local television shows and even made it onto Australian TV in the recent past. It is the only national festival to celebrate the noble onion in this way and at its heart are the one and only Onion Eating Contest and the magnificent Onion Show, both of which are unique in their status in the UK, possibly even in the world. The Onion Show, which is affiliated with the National Vegetable Society, is staged in the Memorial Hall and features class exhibits that can be from the onion family only. It also includes classes for children and exhibitors come from all over the UK to compete for the cash prizes and trophies, making for fierce competition.

The Onion Eating Contest in its full glory

The Onion Eating Contests for men and women attract many entries every year and take place in the afternoon on the main stage. If you think you can eat a raw onion then come along and have a go! For further information on the Fayre and details on entering the contests please go to the website www. newentonionfayre. org. Newent's Poetry Evening 2017 If you thought that poetry was boring, too intellectual or not for a night out, then think again. Poetry is alive and kicking and in Newent. Our local poet, Samantha Pearse, will be hosting the 4th of these fun successful Newent Poetry Evenings. This will again take place at the Coach House Restaurant in the George Hotel, Church Street, Newent on Saturday the 16th September and will be starting at 7.30pm. The headline for the event will be the incredibly funny Alison Absolute who was the worthy winner at last year’s Cheltenham Literary Festival Slam and is not to be missed.

Page 14

With poetry, performances, an opportunity to read out your own work and with newly added ‘Flash Fiction’ and food as well, this looks to be another great, fun night out. Apart from other acts, there will be "open mic” opportunities for anyone who would like to share their poetry with the nation (as well as Newent!). This event is poetry with passion, performance and panache – so why not come along and experience the highs and lows on the rollercoaster that is Performance Poetry. In the past some of the “Open Mic” performers have been stars in their own right so why not come and have a go.

- Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Since starting these poetry evenings, Samantha has already become a published poet and appears at all local poetry and art events. Reviews from previous poetry events include “Fantastic, best night for ages.”; "Looking forward to the next one.”; “Best night out in a long time, sooo glad we went!” and “Friendly, funny and delicious.” Tickets (£12 in advance/£14 on the door) are available at the George Hotel or at Newent Osteopaths. Spaces are limited and the first three evenings were sold out, so early booking is advisable. Bookings can be taken on 07743 381360 or by email on smpearse1@gmail.com. - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

THE MARKET HOUSE

Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor Cllr June Davies At the official 50th anniversary of the International Centre for Birds of Prey, I was very honoured to be presented to HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. Congratulations to Jemima Parry-Jones MBE, for all the wonderful work she continues to do. I was invited by His Worshipful the Mayor of Gloucester to a service at the Cathedral to mark the 10th anniversary of the floods. As if on cue as the Dean started his homily, there was a mighty clap of thunder and the heavens opened, developing into more flooding of the city. The service was very poignant and I was privileged to be part of it. At the end of last term, I was invited to a retirement lunch for Jane Nichols who has been a teacher at Newent Community School for 42 years and is the longest serving member of staff ever at the school. It gave me the opportunity to thank Jane publicly not only for the teaching of our children who have passed through the school but also for the pastoral care she gave while she was head of Mountbatten House. We wish Jane a long and happy retirement.

Open Day Success Newent had a very successful Open Day on Saturday 22nd July, despite inclement weather including heavy thunderstorms. Shoppers were entertained by various musicians throughout the day. The classic car show and Birds

of Prey demonstrations were thoroughly enjoyed. Four hundred free ‘I’ve shopped in Newent’ bags, bursting with information about the town and its wide assortment of businesses and local organisations were distributed. The Town Council is very pleased that the event achieved its aim of showcasing Newent as a small but attractive and vibrant market town full of diverse shops and businesses selling a wide range of goods and services at competitive prices and would like to thank all the businesses and organisations who supported the Open Day.

A new face on Newent Town Council Following the resignation of the councillor representing Cliffords Mesne, three people put themselves forward to fill the advertised vacancy by co-option. Following individual short presentations to the Council, Ruth Wadley was selected. Congratulations to Ruth and thanks to the other two candidates who also gave convincing presentations. It was a difficult choice.

Town Trail - A new App for visitors to Newent Two of our councillors have been working with Real Town Tours to produce an App

which is downloadable onto phones and tablets. A history of the town and ten points of interest with images and information provide a fascinating walk for visitors and residents who are new to Newent alike. Look for Real Town Tours in Google Play/App Store and find Newent in the ‘Gloucestershire Market Towns’ section.

Motorways: Four Lanes, or Three with a Hard Shoulder? If you’ve driven on Britain’s motorways recently, you can’t fail to have noticed that the hard shoulder is sometimes being turned into another lane. On some motorways this new lane is at times a lane and at others a hard shoulder. Indications on gantries above the lanes tell you when this is the case. These roads are termed “smart motorways” and there are three types: those with “Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running”, ones with “All Lane Running” and a third called “Controlled Motorways”. So, what exactly are these? When driving on a Dynamic Hard Shoulder motorway, expect the hard shoulder to be a lane at busy periods and a hard shoulder at other times; when it’s a lane you can use

refuges, placed every 500m or so, to stop in an emergency. All Lane Running is just that: the hard shoulder has gone, replaced by an emergency refuge every 2.5km. Controlled Motorways are like old style motorways: three or four lanes with a permanent hard shoulder. Except now the carriageways are subject to variable speed limits. If you breakdown on the first two types of motorway, and can nurse your car to a refuge, don’t just set off after fixing the fault: gone is the Highway Code directive of “gather speed on the hard shoulder and rejoin the carriageway”. Now you must contact the Highways Agency, who will then escort you back onto the carriageway. Statistically motorways are the safest roads in the UK, but with three lanes or sometimes four, variable limits and no continuous hard shoulder, it’s still best to know what kind of road you are travelling on. Lamb Koftas with Minted Couscous Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes

This flavour-packed dish is great for a late summer lunch or dinner. Serve with warmed flatbreads and tzatziki, if liked.

Ingredients: FOR THE KOFTAS • 350g lean minced lamb ½ red onion, finely chopped • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2tsp ground coriander • 2tsp ground cumin • 1tsp smoked paprika • 2tbsp fresh chopped coriander • Squeeze of lemon juice FOR THE COUSCOUS • 225g couscous • 3tbsp olive oil • 1tbsp lemon juice • ¼ cucumber, finely diced • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 3tbsp fresh chopped mint • 4 tomatoes, cut into chunks • Lemon wedges and mint sprigs to garnish Page 22

To make the koftas, place the mince, onion, garlic, spices, fresh coriander and lemon juice in a food processor. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then process until very finely minced. Divide the mixture into 12 and using clean damp hands, shape each into an oval. Push each oval onto the end of a long wooden skewer (see tip) and place on a foil-lined grill pan. Cook under a preheated medium grill for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently, until browned and cooked through. Meanwhile, make the couscous. Place the couscous in a heatproof bowl and pour over 250ml boiling water. Cover and leave to soak for about 10 minutes, until all the water has been absorbed. Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, cucumber, spring onions and mint. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve the koftas with the couscous and tomatoes, garnished with lemon wedges and mint sprigs.

TIP Soak the wooden skewers in cold water for about 20 minutes to prevent the ends burning under the grill.

Craig's Comment While discussions around Brexit can relate to uncertainty at the moment, recent announcements from the UK Government could be positive for our local environment. Earlier in the summer, Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced that farmers across the country will continue to get the £3bn that they get at present after we leave the EU. At the moment this money comes to farmers from the EU. The Government has said that farmers will need to “put the environment first” to be able to benefit from this money in the future. This should be welcomed as there are a great many farmers throughout the District that already do an excellent job in looking after their local environment, with many of these

benefits being passed on to the rest of us as well.

UK Government agrees that their work helps the local need.

Whether it is improving wildlife diversity, preventing flooding, or maintaining hedgerows and footpaths, these are things that go further than just improving the land for farmers themselves.

Parts of Gloucestershire still suffer from flooding throughout the year. Michael Gove’s comments could start the ball rolling for local flood issues to be directly targeted under the Government’s new plans.

As the policy is developed further there is a real opportunity for the Forest of Dean to see further improvements to our local environment. At the moment farmers in the Forest are measured against the same criteria as those in Yorkshire, Spain, and France.

For anyone who has ever experienced local roads being under water or who has lost the use of utilities and services due to flooding, I hope you would agree, that the work that farmers can do to improve our local environment is something that really can benefit us all.

In the future, each area’s own local environmental needs could be taken into consideration as the Government decides what work farmers will be rewarded for through payments. Local farmers who already work hard to help the local area will continue to be rewarded, while those that do work that is presently not seen as beneficial by the EU could be rewarded as well if the

Garden in Goodrich open for the National Garden Scheme A garden in Goodrich is opening its gates to raise money for the National Garden Scheme on the 9th and 10th of September. The National Garden Scheme (which you may have heard referred to as the NGS or Yellow Book Gardens) is celebrating its 90th year in 2017. Since 1927 they have been inviting garden owners to open their exceptional gardens to the public for good causes, giving people unique access to some of Britain’s most beautiful, memorable gardens for around the same cost of a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Over the last 90 years, the NGS has donated £50 million to charities across the UK, thanks to the warm generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors – a rich blend of generosity that lies at the heart of the National Garden Scheme. Charites supported include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and Carers Trust. Every donation counts with gardens in Herefordshire last year raising over £60,000 between them.

Roy Smith and Jo Ward-Ellison at Poole Cottage in Goodrich hope to help to increase the total raised for the NGS in Herefordshire 2017. Up on the slopes of Coppett Hill above Goodrich, their 2-acre hillside garden has been created with a naturalistic feel, fits well with the local landscape and makes the most of the fine views. It’s a relatively new garden with the first trees and hedges only planted 6 years ago. Roy explains that these formed the main structure of the garden helping to divide it up into different areas. Since then planting has continued with many more shrubs and herbaceous plants providing yearround interest. A favourite group of plants are ornamental grasses, many of which look particularly effective with later flowering perennials as the seasons change and summer moves into autumn. There is a productive kitchen garden, a small orchard and a pond loved by wildlife plus many places to sit and enjoy the views. Poole Cottage Garden will be open

between 11.00am and 5.00pm on both the 9th and 10th of September. Admission is £4 for adults. Children are free and well-behaved dogs on short leads will be welcomed too. Tea, coffee and homemade cakes will be available and there will be plants for sale. Due to limited space for cars locally all parking will be in the village of Goodrich and for those who don’t want a 10-15minutes stroll up the hill, there will be a shuttle service running on both days. The British Legion’s “Great Pilgrimage 90” Next year, the Royal British Legion will be recreating its 1928 pilgrimage to World War 1 battlefields. This evocative event, called "The Great Pilgrimage 90" (or short GP90), is set to be the British Legion’s biggest membership event in history. A tour to the WW1 battlefields and cemeteries will be made to commemorate 90 years since the Great Pilgrimage, when on 8th August 1928, a decade after the end of World War 1, veterans and war widows visited the battlefields of the Somme and Ypres before marching to the Menin Gate in Ypres. On 8th August 2018, two representatives from each British Legion branch and county will carry their standards along the same route in Ypres to the Menin Gate, representing an entire generation that served while defending their country. Over two days, attendees will visit battlefield memorial sites, trenches and cemeteries. Each branch will bring a wreath containing a Remembrance message and, on the 8th of August, take part in a parade to the Menin Gate where the wreaths will be collected and subsequently built into the display within the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Grounds that surround the memorial. This will be followed by a march which will be observed by civic and military guests from the UK, Europe and Commonwealth countries

before a national commemorative service, led by the Last Post Association, will be held at the Menin Gate. Afterwards, members will join spectators in the Great Square for an afternoon of comradeship with exhibitions and musical performances.

The Menin Gate

The Newent and District Branch is proud to have a long history which dates back to 1927 when the branch was formed and mostly made up of members of the Comrades Club. It is a small branch with limited resources, however, members feel that it must be represented at the GP90 event. This type of event only comes around once in a lifetime and the branch would be very proud to represent the town of Newent and District on this very prestigious occasion. It is, therefore, looking to raise funds to enable the Standard Bearer, Colin Thomson, and one other person to represent the Newent Branch at the event. If you are able to sponsor them or wish to make a donation, please speak to a member or contact the chairman on newent.chairman@ rbl.community. The branch meets at the Memorial Hall on the last Thursday of every month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome to come along to see the

dyes could be extracted from other sources, such as ultramarine blue from ground lapis lazuli gemstones or Tyrian purple, where 10,000 boiled snails produced just one gram of dye. the story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know there was a time when green wallpaper could kill? Or that a very expensive dye was made from boiled snails? In the Palaeolithic era about 35,000 years ago - Stone Age man began to create cave paintings using earth pigments mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For centuries the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects and animals. Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, strong, bright pigments or

Historically, the use of colour was governed by ease of availability and thus cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the affordable ‘common’ colours included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. Everything changed from the early 19th century, when chemists began to develop synthetic colours at lower

cost. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved - though an exception was Emerald Green, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, as fumes from wallpaper printed with the arsenic-based ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens. Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the rollercoaster of fashion and scientific advances: from the ‘greeneryyallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916 and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the pinks, blues and greens of 2017. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits.

What are this year’s most fashionable colours? greenery: Colour authority Pantone’s colour of 2017, Greenery is described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Greenery is ideal for adding pops of colour in the form of cushions, cupboard fronts or vases. It also lends itself

Newent's first Open Day Newent held its first Open Day this year to celebrate all the shops, trades and organisations that can be found in and around the town. Admittedly an experiment, the event proved to be very popular with both Newent residents and local traders. Organised by the Town Council, and led by Mayor June Davies, the event set out to showcase shops, local traders and local organisations that felt that not enough people in Newent and surrounding villages were aware of just what Newent has to offer. The Council reacted to this concern and set up this event inviting all local traders, businesses and organisations to take part. They responded to

25 Years Work Anniversary! Afternoon tea was being served up in great quantities at Labels Shopping Ross-on-Wye one Monday last month to celebrate the very special anniversary of one of their colleagues, Chrissie Ellis, who has worked for the store for 25 years. Chrissie, who lives in Ross-onWye, joined Labels in August 1992, just a year after it opened in 1991 and recalls working in every department over the time. “I’ve loved every minute of working

here at Labels,” said Chrissie. “It really is the people that you work with that make all the difference to enjoying your job.” Chrissie’s creative skills are being put to great use in her latest position, designing and making props for events such as the store’s Christmas grotto, a role that she describes as her dream job. Colleagues and friends put on the party for Chrissie in celebration of her achievement with colleagues from the past and present joining her for a slice

Onion Ed's Blog Hi, everyone!

Here is your favourite onion, Onion Ed, again. I am now getting really excited about the Onion Fayre on Saturday the 9th of September. In fact, there is so much going on this year that I have had to sit down and make some notes so that I do not miss anything, and you will be happy to know that I am going to share my notes with all of you wonderful people to ensure that you do not miss a thing either. One of our most exciting additions this year is the “Funion Zone” which will be down by the lake and is sponsored by Cargills. This will be going all day and is specifically for children. It will include, amongst others, a children’s disco, stalls, games, activities, and even a bubble machine. Also by the lake, there will be a fun dog show including those BIG Leonberger dogs, and also a display of African parrots. I will be looking to find a yellow An African Grey Parrot and green one that looks like me! I am also looking forward to seeing the Vintage Vehicle Display in the Memorial Hall car park. This year it features some wonderfully nostalgic vintage tractors. I remember some of these from when I was just a shallot. Nearby will be one of those very

large hoists supplied by the newest company to Newent, MKM, who will be running a competition that all the family can take part in. How many of you will remember to go and visit the Onion Show in the Memorial Hall? I love to see all these onions, especially the children’s displays, they are always My favourite part of the Onion amazing Show (The Children’s Class) to see. Don’t forget that this year there will also be cooking classes with onions as a new addition to the programme. I feel sad that I cannot take part in the Show, I think I would have an advantage, being an onion and all that, however, the standard is so high I don’t think I could win the Three Shires Cup for “Best in Show” so I think I will leave that to the experts. You will see me in the parade beforehand which will be led by those BIG Leonberger dogs. They are so big, I might even ask one for a lift. The Mayor will be opening the Fayre and will be transported to the opening in a Tuk-Tuk (which has very kindly been supplied by Completely Motoring of Staverton). For those who do not know what

a Tuk-Tuk is, it is a Chinese taxi (see picture). I also understand that no expense This is a TUK-TUK has been spared with this particular Tuk-Tuk, it has a full luxury specification which includes air conditioning (a small electric fan on the dashboard) and even an amazing audible reversing warning - in Chinese! I will, of course, be visiting one of my favourite places, the Food Hall and afterwards look to see the music in the acoustic tent and those wonderful bands on the stages. In case you are wondering why I keep talking about Leonberger dogs and how BIG they are, well, they are BIG and quite amazing so why not? Come along and see for yourself – you will be amazed! I could not finish without passing on some onion jokes that are going around at the moment... What do you call a Hobbit with a healthy appetite Lord of the Onion Rings. What is round, white and giggles - A tickled onion. Ha Ha! I look forward to seeing you all on the 9th of September. Don’t forget to look out for me and to give me a big hug.

Mayor welcomes new job opportunities Mayor of Ross-onWye, Cllr Nigel Gibbs, and Mayoress, Mrs Gill Gibbs, attended the fourth birthday of the Baileys DIY store last month. In his speech, the Mayor commended the Bailey family for choosing to locate their store at Ross-on-Wye and for providing a substantial number of job opportunities for local people across Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. The family business was started 45 years ago in Abergavenny by Page 32

Norman Bailey as a car repair garage. It expanded quickly to sell fuel and added a convenience store. Five years ago, the family purchased the old Rockfield DIY store in the town, just behind their BP garage, renaming it Baileys DIY and shortly afterwards opening their second DIY store in the old Focus building at Ross-on-Wye. The Bailey family’s latest venture is ‘Baileys at Home’, a home, garden and gift store in Frogmore Street, Abergavenny. Still family-owned and -run, the business provides employment for over 80 local people.

Auction Anecdote Of course, it is just typical that a very desirable gentleman’s Rolex wrist watch ‘comes along’ just after our annual specialist watch sale in June and so it had to be sold in our July sale which actually had a specialist coins and notes section. However, the wonders of the internet and our online catalogue mean that really one can almost sell anything at any time and interested dealers and collectors can almost instantly track it down. Sometimes, after I have uploaded our online catalogue at around midnight, I have a quick peek at the list of registered bidders a few minutes later. There are always a few keen ‘midnight owls’ who have obviously already traced something of interest and added their details in readiness for the sale the following week. The watch (which was estimated at £800/£1,200) was consigned by a client who had inherited it from his father and worn it himself for many years. He now felt he wanted to buy a new Rolex of his own, especially as this one was in need of a bit of restoration to the dial, which had corroded slightly. The watch was a stainless steel Oyster Perpetual Precision and appeared to be in good working order - although it took me a few minutes reading through the instructions on Google to work out how to operate all the functions when asked by an interested buyer to give a very detailed condition report. Gentleman’s wrist watches are selling very well at auction on the current market as many men seem to be keen on owning at least two or three and there are also a high number of ‘serious’ collectors in the market. So it was not surprising that there was a huge amount of interest with many requests for condition reports and further photographs – despite it not being in the watch sale. In the end, the watch sold for £2,600 after a contest between a determined online bidder from China and the successful UK buyer who was on the telephone. Smiths next sale is on the 6th October and has a special section for stamps and postcards. Further entries are invited on the 5th, 7th, 12th & 14th September, 10.00am - 3.00pm or by appointment. How to Build Up Your Credit Rating at University stage?

Being able to borrow money when you need it is a crucial part of everyday life for most people. It enables you to enter the property market when the time comes, helps you buy your first car, and provides the means to deal with emergencies when they happen. Many undergraduate bank accounts offer a credit card and arranged overdraft facility when you start university, with the overdraft facility often being increased over the following years depending on the risk involved to the lender. Do lenDers think you will Default? This is partly how lenders decide whether or not to accept an application for borrowing – it’s based largely on the risk of default that you present to them. This risk is assessed using your credit file, which contains a credit rating and other information. Building a good credit rating certainly takes time, but when your degree course is finished and you start work, you’ll be thankful for the steps you’ve already taken. So what can you do to help yourself at this Page 40

• apply for a credit-builder credit card These credit cards are for people with no credit history, or a poor credit rating that needs to be rebuilt. In your case, a card such as this will allow you to build up a good credit history, as long as you are sensible and use it in the right way. You should use it each month to pay for regular but relatively low outgoings - your food shopping, for example, or rail tickets. The crucial part is to pay off the balance in full, and without fail, every month. Missing a single payment will instantly damage your credit rating. You will also be charged a high interest rate on the outstanding balance, and late payment fees. Using a credit-builder credit card is one of the most effective ways to build a good credit history if it’s used properly. • Make sure you’re on the electoral register Any lender will want to see that you have a fixed address, and be able to confirm your identity. This increases confidence that you’re trustworthy, but as a student living in halls the best option is to use your home address. You can apply to be included on the register by contacting your local council or using the gov.uk website.

• Don’t exceed your overdraft limit without authorisation Going over your arranged overdraft limit, even for a day, will trigger high interest charges and other fees, but crucially it will also damage your credit score. If you know that you’re going to need extra money for a limited time, talk to your bank and see if they’ll agree to increase your limit, even if it’s only on a temporary basis. • avoid multiple applications for credit If you’re refused credit by one or more lenders it will adversely affect your credit rating, so it’s a good idea to avoid making multiple applications at the same time. • include rent payments in your credit file The Rental Scheme was first introduced in 2016. It involves paying your rent to the landlord through an intermediary, who informs the credit reference agencies that you’ve paid on time. The three main credit reference agencies in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit – each hold their own information about your credit history. At some point whilst you’re at university, it would be worthwhile checking with each agency to ensure the information they hold is correct. http://www.savethestudent. org/money/student-banking/ student-credit-rating.html

Wireless Black Spots Wireless networks do have coverage ‘black spots’ in the home. Some bits of your house get a great signal, while others don’t. The culprit is often metal - radiators, filing cabinets, cookers and other big metal things can block Wi-Fi’s radio waves - and there are all kinds of obstacles between your router and your devices. But before you consider buying a gadget such as a Wi-Fi extender, try moving your router: it might be in a particularly Wi-Fi unfriendly place, and just moving it a few feet up could make all the difference. If it’s an old router consider getting a newer one: the latest Wi-Fi standard, 802.11ac, is much, much faster and stronger than older standards. Does this all sound like gobbledygook and you just want the problem fixed?! Be assured it can be fixed and call an expert.

Putting on a brave face for a good cause 18-year-old Harry Taylor from Newent put on a very brave face when he agreed to have his chest waxed to raise money for charity. Harry decided to raise money for the Chill Out Zone in Newent one evening whilst having drinks with his friends. Harry and his friends often go there and felt it could do with more funding. He said: “I have always enjoyed going to the Chill Out Zone and saw this as a way to put something back in; I felt any pain suffered would be worth it. The Chill Out has been good to me and my friends and Newent's youth in general, it is a great place for teenagers in town.”

Harry mid-waxing, receiving encouragement from his friends

The deed was carried out by Harry’s sister, Amy, at the Chill Out Zone and he was supported by a number of his friends. So far £80 has been raised in what can only be described as an incredible gesture by Harry.

The Drop-In Youth and Community Café serves tea, coffee, cake and biscuits and is open to everyone Wednesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

The Chill Out Zone in Broad Street, Newent, is a Youth Activities and Services Centre and a Drop-In Youth and Community Café for young people from the age of 11 to 19. It is managed, supported and funded by the Newent Initiative Trust. As well as being a meeting place, it provides activities such as cooking, gardening, Xbox, pool, trips and much more for the youth of Newent and surrounding areas. The Chill Out Zone is open Mondays 7.00pm - 9.00pm, Tuesdays 6.30pm - 9.00pm, Wednesdays 6.00pm -

Live@Newent Lake 2017 This year’s Live@Newent Lake event was bigger than ever.

The event brought to life a few years ago by Newent Community School students, is now run by the Soundscape Community Music Association. It not only provides entertainment for Newent but also showcases local talent. This year, it featured more groups than ever. As well as performing, participants were competing to be the band that opens on the main stage of this year’s Onion Fayre which is being held on Saturday the 9th of September. David Sass, chairman of the Soundscape Community Music Association, said: “I was very pleased with the event as a whole and with the groups that came along to ‘audition’ for the opening spot on the Onion Fayre’s main stage. The competition between the bands was pretty amazing. The standard was much higher this year and it was pleasing to see that all performers were still young local musicians. This says a great deal about the role music plays in and around Newent.” This year the event was pleased to be able to welcome back “Rosita”. She is from Newent and came back to town specifically to perform at the Live@Newent Lake event. She is currently studying at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and has just produced her first EP which will be on sale soon. Page 44

9.00pm and Fridays 7.00pm - 9.00pm.

Every Tuesday there is a separate group specifically for young people who need some respite away from their home environment. Professionals who are working with young people that may benefit from this group are welcome to make a referral by contacting the manager via email. The Chill Out Zone is also a C-Card distribution centre. For more information on the Chill Out Zone email newentyouthservicemanager@gmail.com. - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography Apart from a wonderful performance of the Strawberry Hill Dancers and Rosita, the performers that took part were Caitlin Dunnett, Strawberries and Cream, Puffer, Filthy Casuals, Newspaper Taxis, Wake the World and Tom Wirth. Excellent performances were given by all but the group chosen by the judges, in the end, was 'The Filthy Casuals' who will be opening the Onion Fayre this year.

Rosita performing on stage

Mention must also be made for the stage crew, all of whom are students attending Newent Community School. They The Filthy Casuals on stage at the event did an excellent job despite the odd shower and have already stagemanaged several events for Soundscape this year including, amongst others, The Big Lunch, Pauntley Real Ale Festival and Newent Orchestra’s Spring Concert. - Written by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

As we approach the autumn it is a good idea to start thinking about preparation for keeping your pet happy and calm during Bonfire celebrations. You may have noticed last year that your pet shows odd behaviour such as restlessness, excessive noise and hiding away when they hear fireworks but there are things you can do to help reduce stress for them this year. For example, keeping your pet indoors with the curtains drawn before a firework display starts and making sure that your dog is walked before so they are not frightened when the fireworks start. Remember that the calmer you behave, the calmer your pet will be, so try to act normally around them.

Your pet needs shade too, whether they are out on a walk or sitting in the garden, so; • Never leave your pet in the car • Make sure your pet is hydrated and that there are plenty of water sources accessible. Cats prefer their food bowls to be separate from their water bowls. • Keep midday walks to a minimum • Keep white-coated pets indoors during midday sun where possible • Take precautions on the beach (shade, no sitting on direct sand and limit the time) • Keep old or overweight dogs out of the sun. If you see either your dog or someone else’s dog with signs of overheating, please let them know and call your veterinarian immediately. Keep the dog cool with wet towels, cool water or ice to chew till he/she is at the vet. • The nice weather encourages us to get out in our gardens. Always check any sheds and summer houses at night to make sure cats have not crept inside to escape the sun.

Our Pet Health Club is a great way to keep on top of your pet’s health. The monthly plan provides savings of up to 50% on routine healthcare. Visit our website www.milparkvets.com to find out more.

Weight clinics We offer free weight clinics for cats and dogs with our nurses who can provide you with advice on how to keep your pet a healthy weight. Please call now to make your appointment.

Newent Lord's Larder Food Bank The Lord's Larder Food Bank was conceived in Newent and serves the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas. It supports members of the community who are in need by providing them with short-term access to basic food and toiletries. Anyone who finds themselves unable to feed themselves or their families qualifies. The Larder, which is run and maintained entirely by volunteers, opened in 2010. Working with agencies within the county, its aim is to target aid where there is a genuine need. Their voucher system enables this to be done most effectively. In addition to this, there is also an Emergency Pack system available in certain circumstances. The vouchers and emergency packs, as well as advice and support, are available to ANYONE IN NEED.

You may be eligible and vouchers or emergency packs can be issued if: • You have recently lost your job and are not yet in receipt of state benefits. • You have an unforeseen expenditure (such as a large electrical bill) which may mean no money is left for food. • You cannot afford to 'Heat' and

'Eat' (such as elderly people). • You have a family where children will otherwise go hungry. The vouchers are available from several agencies and places across the region; these include the Citizens Advice Bureau (see below), Social Services, Two Rivers Housing and all the Churches - St Mary’s Church (see below for details), Glebe Chapel, United Reform Church, Gorsley Baptist Church, St Peter’s Cliffords Mesne and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

A typical family box

Anyone can be eligible for a voucher, emergency pack or to just get some advice or support. If you feel you are eligible you should contact should contact the nearest agency set out above. Application for a voucher or emergency pack must be made through the nearest agency and once those in need have received a voucher they should go along to the Lords Larder in Newent (address below), where on presentation of the voucher, suitable tinned and dried goods or toiletries will be provided. The Larder is open every Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Address: The Lord's Larder, The Basement and Ground Floor, 8-10 Church Street, Newent, Gloucestershire, GL18 1PP

The Benefits of regularly grooming your pet!

We all enjoy a trip to the hairdressers for a pampering session; some of our pets are no different. A grooming session at home not only gives us the opportunity to bond with our pets, it also allows us to carry out an all over examination to check for parasites, wounds, lumps and bumps and anything else out of the ordinary. Getting your pets used to having their ears, eyes, teeth, feet and body looked at can also make a surprising difference to how relaxed they are when they visit the vets because to them it is a normal part of their daily routine.

What you may find when grooming your pet Parasites need no introduction to pet owners! The two major ones to keep a look out for are fleas and ticks. • Fleas: Pets are often very effective at removing fleas, so as well as looking for these tiny pests; you may see signs of brown flea “dirt”. This is a very reliable indicator that fleas are present. Fleas are a major cause of skin problems in pets and they can also bite humans. • Ticks: Regular grooming and removal of ticks, alongside an effective product that will kill or repel ticks, forms the basis for prevention of tick borne diseases. There are a number of products available for flea and tick treatment and prevention, including a very effective tablet for dogs; we are running a long-term loyalty scheme on this product. For puppies when you buy the first treatment, you get the second one free and for adult dogs, when you buy

three treatments you get the fourth one free. Grass seeds from the meadow grasses are easily trapped in the pet’s coat. They often migrate and become lodged in a variety of places – including the ears, eyes and between the toes. Lumps, bumps and swellings are other things to keep a watchful eye on. If you find a skin lump on your pet, there are several possible underlying causes. It is a good idea to get any lumps, bumps or swellings checked by a vet as soon as possible. So, when you are grooming your pet, if you find anything out of the ordinary, please don’t hesitate to contact the surgery for advice. Tel. 01531 632276

Cake and Bake Coconut Rice Pudding with Caramelised Apples A classic with a twist, this creamy rice pudding has added coconut milk for extra flavour and is served with spiced apples in a caramel sauce.

Ingredients: • 50g unsalted butter, softened • 100g pudding rice • 400ml full-fat milk • 200ml coconut milk • 40g caster sugar • 1 tbsp runny honey • 2 red apples, skinned, cored and cut into wedges • 75g demerara sugar • 1-2 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 tbsp apple juice

Serves 4 Ready in 2 hours 30 mins

TIP

You can use other fruit slices instead of the apples – try peaches or pears or halved apricots. Page 52

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130°C, gas 2. Use a little of the softened butter to thoroughly grease a 1.2-litre shallow ovenproof dish. 2. Tip the pudding rice into the buttered dish and stir in the milk and coconut milk. Add the caster sugar and stir again. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Carefully remove the dish and give the pudding a good stir, then stir in the honey and dot with a little more of the butter. Return to the oven for a further 1 hour 30 minutes or until a golden skin has formed and most of the milk has been absorbed by the rice. 3. About 10 minutes before the rice pudding is ready, melt the rest of the butter in a heavy– based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the apple slices and fry for 1-2 minutes, turning once. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar and cook gently, without stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the cinnamon and apple juice and simmer for a further few minutes until syrupy. 4. Stir the rice pudding (remove the skin first, if preferred) and spoon into bowls. Top with the apples and syrup and serve.

Fretwork Concert in Huntley Village

NEWENT & DISTRICT U3A

On Sunday 10th September 2017, for one night only, acclaimed viol consort Fretwork will perform at St John the Baptist Church in the village of Huntley.

One of the more than one thousand groups of semi-retired and retired people in the UK learning new things for fun.

WHO ARE WE?

WHAT DO WE DO?

Last year, Fretwork celebrated its 30th anniversary. In these last three decades, they have explored and promoted the tradition of great English consort music, while introducing audiences to the inspiring sound of the viol. Few other ensembles can match the range of Fretwork’s repertory, which spans from the first printed music to contemporary commissions. This extraordinary breadth of music has taken them all over the world since their debut. In addition to this, Fretwork have become known as pioneers of contemporary music for viols, having commissioned over 40 new works. To hear some samples of Fretwork’s repertoire and learn more about them visit www.fretwork.co.uk. The concert has been sponsored by a private patron and all proceeds raised from the evening will go towards the restoration of the church, which is a beautiful Grade 1 listed building that not only boasts elegant stained-glass windows, ornate carvings and highly decorated, gilded ceiling, but also has excellent acoustics to host such an event. The event will be one to remember, combining the beauty of the venue with the grace and talent of Fretwork’s superb musicians. Annual 2 Day Charity Event 29th & 30th September

Put the date in your diary! Well it's here again! We’re opening our doors for two days to host a charity event, taking place in the Interior Needs showrooms. We take the two days to clear out ex-display soft furnishings, blinds, lighting and more at silly prices, with these items up to 50% off or more. 10% of these sales this year will be donated to Alzheimers Society.

We combine this with supporting the Macmillan Coffee Morning Appeal, by offering cake, coffee and tea throughout the two days, with all donations going to Macmillan Cancer Support. Come and join us! Who can resist cake and coffee teamed with good chat and a lot of laughter – all for a good cause!

Any cakes donated for o ur event would be very much appreciated! This year we will have friends of Interior Needs exhibiting in their pop up shops. 10% of their sales will also go to Alzheimers Society.

Opening Times: Mondays by appointment only ~ Tues-Sat 10am-3pm ~ Sundays – Closed Eastern Avenue, Gloucester GL4 3BU (Next to The Weavers Shop, opposite SMYTHS)
