Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Welcome to the March issue of your local community magazine which is packed full of local businesses and fantastic local events, should you be stuck for something to do. March is a busy month with Mother’s Day on the 11th and Good Friday on the 30th. It is also the perfect time to see Gloucestershire's county flower (the daffodil) in all its glory by visiting one of the local Daffodil Festivals which are being held in and around the area this month. You can enjoy free guided walks, locally produced food, great company and more - have a look at our 'What's On' section for more details. As we head into spring, please remember that the clocks go forward 1 hour on Sunday 25th March! If you have a local business and would like to include your business in this or any of our neighbouring magazines, please email or call our office to request a Media Pack. If you are a local event organiser don’t forget that we can publicise your event in our 'What’s On' section. See you back here next month. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

WHAT DO WE DO AT ROTARY? We spend time and effort raising funds for local, national and international charities that require our help in order to continue their good work. You can learn more about some of the amazing donations we have made in this report; however, we also enjoy ourselves, make new friends and attend all sorts of social events, together with our families and members from the local community. Why not come along to one of our meetings and see for yourself? VISIT TO LAITHWAITES WINE:
of our meetings to give a brilliant presentation. She is planning to go on a trip with Camps International to Camp Peru this summer where, together with other students from across the UK, she will discover all about life in Peru, work on practical charitable projects, attempt long mountainous hikes, learn valuable life skills and more. As Isla’s visit proved, we should all be very proud of our youngsters, who take on so many worthwhile challenges during their education.
efforts by buying a school desk (with your name on it) for just £30. Many classrooms in India do not even have desks. With 23 desks sold so far, we have raised £690 but would be very grateful for any additional help. Please contact Rotarian Brian Robbins on 01531 660257 or email brian@woodredding.co.uk for more information - thank you! Your generosity will have a big impact on the learning environment for the children.
DONATION TO ‘MENINGITIS NOW’: The Newent & District Rotary Club is very proud to be able to present a cheque for £3,000 to Steve Dayman, Executive Founder of the Stroudbased charity ‘Meningitis Now’. The money will help support the important work the charity does for those affected by meningitis.
OUR NEXT BIG ROTARY CHARITY EVENT IS A ‘FROG RACING’ EVENING!
Members tasting wine at Laithwaites Members recently visited Laithwaites' enormous UK main distribution centre at Brockworth, where they stock over 13 million bottles, waiting to be dispatched to customers. We didn’t sample all of them but tried a few and had a most enjoyable social evening! SPEAKER EVENING: In February, Isla, a young school girl from Robert May’s School in Odiham, Hampshire, came along to one

Rotarian Clive Gardiner with Steve Dayman, Founder of 'Meningitis Now' DONATION TO DHAMNE SCHOOL, PUNE, INDIA: Last month, the Club committed £3,000 to help with the development of a junior school in Pune. The project aims to provide basic facilities and buildings to enable local children to learn in an environment that we, in the UK, would take for granted. In a separate project, the Club is looking for generous people to support their
The event will take place on Friday 2nd March in the Gambier Parry Hall, Highnam. All net proceeds will be donated to PROSTATE CANCER RESEARCH. Prostate cancer is a disease that affects 1 in 8 men over the age of fifty. All 120 tickets for the event sold out very quickly and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who supports our efforts to fundraise for this cause thank you! SHEPPARD HOUSE PROJECT: We are currently investigating the possibility of a landscapingtype project to provide a safe, secure and interesting area for those attending Sheppard House in Newent. The aim is to create a space where elderly people can sit or walk in safety on a sunny afternoon. Cake and Bake Banana and Walnut Loaf If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then don’t bin them – just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.
Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g light soft brown sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp baking powder • 3 medium eggs • 75g walnut halves, roughly chopped • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with 2 tsp lemon juice • Icing sugar, to dust
Makes 10 Slices Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus cooling time Page 8
1.
Preheat the oven to 170C, Fan 150C, Gas 3. Grease and line the base and the two long sides of a 900g loaf tin with baking paper.
2.
Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined - this will take about 4-5 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and mashed bananas.
3.
Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hour - 1 hour 15 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
4.
Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and cool completely. Dust thickly with icing sugar.
TIP Add a creamy soft frosting instead of the dusting of icing sugar, if liked. Simply beat 100g full-fat soft cheese with 100g very soft unsalted butter until smooth, then beat in 100g sifted icing sugar.

FUNDRAISE. WALK. CELEBRATE.
30th June - 1st July 2018 12 noon to 12 noon.
May Hill Class are enjoying their work on “Toys and Games” and are off to the Dean Heritage Centre in March to have a look at Victorian toys. We are very proud to say that six children took part in the Cross Country selection race at Newent Community School a couple of weeks ago and all ran with tremendous focus and enthusiasm in cold and muddy conditions. Well done to Flora, Joe, Jonathan, Tamera, Arthur and Calum, and special congratulations to Tamera who qualified for the county finals for the third year in a row. Malvern Class also went to Newent Community School to watch the dress rehearsal of the musical “Fame”. It was great fun watching the singing and dancing and we were all thrilled to see some of our ex-pupils in starring roles! As the weather improves, we are looking forward to getting out into our beautiful local countryside for some more exciting outdoor activities. We have spaces available at our school in selected years and there will be a warm welcome for everyone who would like to come along and have a look round; please call the school office for more information. Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre Sarah Gwyer – Further Exhibition in London Artwork by former Newent Community School student Sarah Gwyer is in the spotlight once again as she exhibits at a major London event. The previous Welsh Artist of the Year Finalist, whose Amy Winehouse sculpture attracted attention at the Royal Academy last summer, is one of only 96 artists from 4,000 across Europe to have been chosen for the 'Columbia Threadneedle Prize: Figurative Art Today' exhibition. Described by Time Out as a showcase of 'the best figurative and representational artists from across Europe' and carrying a top prize, which at £20,000 is said to be one of the most valuable art awards in the UK, the show attracts strong talent. The 32-year-old who lives in the Cotswolds is displaying a textile sculpture entitled 'No Pressure Then' at the event being held in Mall Galleries in central London. She said: "I'm so pleased to be part of a nationally recognised exhibition that champions figurative art. It is lovely to show that traditional 'women's crafts', like the cross-stitch included in my piece, can find a place amongst some of the most innovational contemporary artists working in Europe today." Sarah added: "I had the best possible start in my art career at Newent. My teachers were fantastic and I was given a wide range of experience, meaning I can now work in multiple mediums." Alan Johnson, Principal of Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre where Sarah studied from Year Seven to A-Level, said: "It's marvellous to see yet another example of a Newent Community School pupil going on to achieve success." Describing her work as contemporary pop, drawing on influences from Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst, Sarah works in textiles, sculpture and print on the themes of celebrity, consumerism and commercialism. She says she aims to
merge the boundaries between art and craft, pushing traditional ways of working to new levels and audiences. She hit the headlines in 2009 for her debut solo exhibition on the theme of modern day icons, featuring images of Princess Diana, Princes William and Harry, Kate Moss and Kate Middleton with halos. Recognised for several years as a rising star of the art world, Sarah was short-listed for the prestigious Welsh Artist of the Year Award in 2007 for her sparkling bead portrait of Charlotte Church. A MESSAGE FROM “FORGET ME NOT” MUSIC IS GREAT FOR ALL!
Music has been known to have a positive effect on those living with dementia as it helps to recall memories and emotions boosting brain activity. Here are 5 reasons why:
1. Music can evoke emotion in even the most advanced of Alzheimer’s patients. Emotion can bring with it memory. It has been proven that by pairing music with everyday activities, a rhythm can be developed that helps to recall the memory of that activity, improving cognitive ability over time. 2. Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in those living with dementia. Because these two abilities remain long after other abilities have passed, music is an excellent way to reach beyond the disease and reach the person. 3. Towards the latter stages of dementia, the ability to share emotions is often lost. Music can often lead to dancing and dancing can lead to hugs, touching and closeness, and sometimes hidden memories. 4. Singing engages more than just the brain. Listening to music and watching others stimulates more mind power than normal. 5. Music can shift mood, manage stress-induced agitation and stimulate positive interactions because music requires little to no mental processing.

Ffion Edwards to sing at Newent Choral Society’s Spring Concert One of Britain’s most promising young singers is set to thrill music lovers in Newent. Young Welsh Soprano Ffion Edwards will perform the stunning Mozart motet 'Exsultate Jubilate' at Newent Choral Society’s Spring Concert on Saturday 24th March. Last year, Ffion (22) won the prestigious Geraint Morris Award for young soloists, to follow her first place at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in the Lieder solo category. She has since been invited to take part as a soloist in the 2018 Festival of Massed Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The motet, composed when Mozart was still in his teens, is a glorious piece of work and a favourite of sopranos around the world as it allows them to show a wide range and virtuosic ability. Ffion will sing the Mozart
masterpiece under the baton of another rising star on the Welsh and British music scene – Newent Society’s conductor Nia Llewelyn Jones. As well as inspiring the Newent choir with her work, Nia conducts the National Youth Choir of Wales and is singing development leader at Gloucester Cathedral. To continue the city and Welsh connection, Cathedral Director of Music Adrian Partington, one of Britain’s leading organists and conductor of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, will accompany the choral works, alongside a professional orchestra. The concert also includes three choral works by Franz Joseph Haydn, which the society singers have been rehearsing since the new year. The 'Te Deum' is a magnificent choral drama in three parts, originally a commission from Empress Marie Therese,
the wife of Franz I of Austria. Also on the programme is Haydn’s motet 'Insanae et Vanae Curae' and the concert will conclude with a performance of the composer’s acclaimed Nelson Mass, described as "arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition". The concert will take place at Newent School Hall on Saturday 24th March at 7.30pm. Admission is £12, with accompanied under 16-year-olds admitted free. Tickets can be reserved by calling 01989 750528.

Get Your Soil into Shape by Pippa Greenwood
A fundamental garden need is good quality soil; it is key to bigger flowers and heavier crops. And there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be useful, as it can save work with heavy clay soil. If you roughly dig or fork it over, the frost will act on the large lumps of clay and break them down somewhat, making them more manageable. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet, especially if the soil is clay or slightly heavy loam. If you can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and reduce damage. Forking a heavy soil rather than digging with a spade will reduce compaction, but either way the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. Re-forking, breaking up the large lumps, followed by a final raking will help you get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost helps feed the soil naturally Page 20
and improves its texture, so that it holds the right amount of moisture for as long as possible – and there is still time to fork this in now. Create free organic matter by making a compost heap or bin, and turn autumn leaves into lead mould, a wonderful soil conditioner. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit – it can damage or kill garden plants. If you have lots of small stones or larger lumps of flint in your soil, remove them before planting your flowers and vegetables. Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can result in forked or deformed root vegetables. Alternatively, invest in raised beds and fill them with stonefree soil. Manure adds both texture and food for your plants. It should be good quality, with few additives, and free from weeds, especially troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years, manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control weeds in pastureland has devastated plants. Try to buy from
someone local who you can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure must be well-rotted – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed and condition your soil, and help suppress weeds and protect the soil from wind erosion. They work especially well on parts of the garden where plants are not grown year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil to rot down. Sow seeds later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Gloucester author becomes a bestseller Gloucester author Rachel Sargeant’s latest novel, The Perfect Neighbours, published in December 2017, has reached the top ten in the Kindle bestseller charts, and number one in the British and Irish Kindle crime chart. The novel explores the tensions that arise when a newcomer peers below the polite veneer of an apparently close-knit, expat community and finds something toxic buried beneath. When Helen Taylor moves to Germany with her loving husband Gary, she can’t wait to join the community of British teachers from the local International School. But her new start is about to become her worst nightmare and Helen quickly discovers that the perfect neighbours tell the perfect lies. As soon as the charming family across the way welcomes Helen into their home, she begins to suspect that all is not as it seems. Her unease turns to panic when Gary starts to behave strangely and a child goes missing, vanished without a trace. It’s not long before violence and tragedy strike.
With cracks appearing in the cosy neighbourhood, Helen realises her perfect neighbours are capable of almost anything. The book is available from Amazon and the HarperCollins website.

Home & Interiors Spring Clean with Style
By Katherine Sorrell
Sweep, brush, wash and scrub. When spring sunlight shows up the corners of your home that need attention, it’s time to pop on your pinny and get to work. And cleaning is so much more enjoyable when the tools you use are both efficient and good-looking.
Tips for efficienT cleaning • For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it. Page 24

THE MARKET HOUSE
Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor – Cllr June Davies The start of the year was relatively quiet as far as Mayoral duties were concerned, but I am looking forward to future engagements in the Spring. I hope all those who suffered from the awful flu virus are now fully recovered. I didn’t escape and it has made me realise the importance of the flu vaccination. Please continue to read our website to keep up with Council information and activities, much of which is also included in these pages. During March, work is programmed to start on repairs to the legs of our wonderful Market House, one of our greatly valued assets. I wish you all a happy and peaceful Easter at the end of the month, a quarter of the year already gone!
An Update on Snow and Ice Preparations Following an extensive item last month about the problems of dealing with the snow and ice in the town centre, the Council has now decided to trial some grit bins in a few strategic places for use on pavements which can become particularly hazardous. One lockable larger bin will be in place and other smaller bins will be deployed for public use before the next forecast of severe weather conditions. The Town Council hopes that residents and business people, who are able, will also make

Water Bailiff Vacancy Volunteer Water Bailiffs help to maintain the peaceful and legitimate use of our Lake. The Council is now looking for a third person to join the two existing volunteers who hold these posts. If you are interested in contributing a few hours to help keep our Lake the enjoyable and beautiful place we love, please contact the Clerk for further details.
Interested in Newent’s history? Enjoy meeting people? If you can spare an occasional two hours at weekends, please consider joining the volunteer stewards in the Market House. To find out more, please ring Ginny on 01531 821904 or the Town Clerk.
Behind the Scenes As well as meeting twice a month in full council meetings in the Market House, councillors carry out duties behind the scenes in working groups, committees and as representatives on other bodies. You can find out about some of these roles and responsibilities on the website.
A Date for your Diary The Annual Parish Meeting of Newent Town Council will be held at the Memorial Hall during the evening of Wednesday 11th April. An annual report will be given by the Mayor and there will be time for questions. For further details, please see local adverts and visit our website.

Moving House with Children by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk
The thought of leaving friends and going to a new school, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown, can make moving house very unsettling for children. Kate Duggan recently moved house with ten days’ notice. (She wouldn’t recommend it.) Here are some of her top tips for helping children to cope with a big move. InvolvIng your chIld If possible, take your child to see the new house before the move, and explore the area together. Involve them in small decisions: “Where do you think this should go?” “What colour shall we paint your room?” You could also let your child choose some wall decals for their bedroom and a new duvet cover or rug. That being said, they will want familiar items around them. The day before you move, help them to pack a suitcase with everything they’ll need for the next couple of days, including a favourite teddy, a book, a game and so on. Page 28
don’t stress about declutterIng While you may be desperate to declutter ahead of the move, your child may not cope with the extra pressure of giving up toys and clothes, even those that have been languishing in a cupboard for months. Don’t force them into getting rid of things if they don’t want to. You could suggest packing items that they’re not sure about into a box for the loft, with the agreement that you’ll both open it and sort through everything a few months after the move. MakIng faMIly tIMe When your to-do list is three feet long, it’s really difficult to carve out any quality time to spend with your family, but do try. Leaving the boxes for 20 minutes so you can play a board game can help to avoid a potential meltdown later on. All of you will benefit from getting away from the house for a couple of hours now and then, ideally for some fresh air and time to focus on each other.
talk to your chIld Explain why you’re moving house, whether it’s due to needing to pay less rent or because you’ve found a better area to live in. Talk about how your child is feeling about the move. What are they worried about, and what can you do to alleviate those worries? So, for example, if they’re worried about a new school, could you ask their teacher to help you arrange a playdate before your child starts at the school? If they’re upset about leaving friends, can you arrange meet-ups or Skype calls? Make tIMe for yourself Moving is stressful. And when you’re stressed, it’s very easy to lose your temper with the kids when they’re being particularly whingy or difficult. So try to take some time out to recharge your own batteries. You might find relaxation techniques useful, or just kicking back with a glass of wine and a film now and then may help.

Newent and District Policing March Update Dear Farmers, My name is Pete Timmins and I am the Rural and Environmental Crime Liaison Officer for the Newent and District Policing area. Rural Crime has been on the rise over the last few years and the Newent District has been especially hit. Part of my role is to work with the farmers to help prevent and reduce this type of crime. Rural Crime is a crime that affects those living and working in rural areas of the UK. It covers a wide range of crimes but the recent rise has included theft of machinery, vehicles, heating oil, metal, diesel and pesticides. Thieves are known to target high-value agricultural equipment and many top-of-therange stolen vehicles are smuggled out of the country, ending up in Eastern Europe. A new trend is emerging of criminals seeking out older models that are not fitted with immobilisers and alarms. Much of this stolen property is then sold to developing nations. Criminals have also started focusing on pesticides from farm chemical stores. In one reported case, sprays worth £20,000 were stolen in a single raid. We understand that this has a huge impact on your business and your insurance. Prevention is better than cure, and I am looking to promote crime prevention to hopefully prevent this type of crime from happening in the first instance.
What can I do to tackle rural crime in my community? A few prevention steps can help you and other farmers from being a victim of crime. Always consider that if we are all pulling in the same direction and helping each other, then it will help us get to our common goal of reducing crime for the whole community. Criminals will also choose the easy target Page 30

Alabama Rot Update There has recently been a lot of publicity in the media regarding an emerging disease, emotively named Alabama Rot, but what actually is it and what are the symptoms we should be looking out for in our dogs?
What is Alabama Rot? As this is a new condition, our knowledge of the disease is constantly expanding. The disease results in tiny blood clots forming in blood vessels which become blocked, leading to subsequent damage of the surrounding tissue. In the skin, this causes ulceration; however, in the kidney, it can lead to severe organ dysfunction (kidney failure). At the present time, the exact causes of Alabama Rot are unknown, although an environmental cause is considered
possible it has not yet been confirmed. What we do know is that most cases occur in the winter (52%) and spring (40%) when the ground is wet and muddy. It is thought that only about 25% of the dogs who present with skin lesions (most commonly on the paws, underbelly, muzzle and tongue) actually go on to develop kidney failure. There have been several confirmed (and more suspected) cases in the local area, but as the actual cause is still unknown, it is very difficult for us to give specific advice on which areas are best avoided when out walking; however, the majority of previous cases have been walked in wet and muddy areas.
Symptoms to look out for The first symptoms tend to appear on average three days after infection, these tend to be
Our advice to owners
We are advising owners to wash any part of their dog that becomes wet and muddy on a walk and to check regularly for any unexplained sores on their lower legs, paws, the underside of the body and the tongue. If you have found any unexplained sores on your dogs, or are at all concerned or would just like some more information on this condition, please do not hesitate to call the surgery and ask to speak with one of our vets on 01531 632276.

St Mary’s Church's First Comedy Night The beginning of February saw St Mary's Church in Newent rise above the norm and put on a comedy night for the people of Newent to enjoy. This event was the first of its kind for St Mary's. Residents and visitors attended the live event in their droves and the church was packed to capacity with around 240 people squeezed in to watch the show, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The star of the show, aside from the excellent host Curate Dan Brown, was none other than the magnificent Comedy Magician John Archer, who intrigued his audience with some astounding tricks, the best of which had to be the ‘swallowing’ of the longest balloon imaginable (see photograph) – and yes, it did completely disappear!
John preparing the tricks for his act Curate Dan Brown, who hosted and organised the event, said afterwards: "Having seen John before, I knew this would be a great evening and that is exactly what it turned out to be. I received nothing but great comments from members of the audience and everybody was asking when we could do this again. This shows just how committed St Mary’s is to serving the local community – I hope this event is only the first of many."
The musical interlude Almost as astonishing was his numbers trick, where he was given a random number from the audience and within 25 seconds (a new personal record according to John), he produced a board with 16 squares containing 16 numbers which, when added up horizontally, vertically, diagonally, etc., always totalled the original number given. In addition, short musical interludes and an excellent stand-up routine kept the audience spellbound during the evening. For the first event of this kind put on by the church, this bodes well for the future.
John with the disappearing balloon
After the event, the Reverend Simon explained how ‘utterly enthralled’ he was and judging by the audience’s response, the audience felt the same.
We can only applaud the efforts of the church to try and bring more people to the town in the evenings. John Archer is an award-winning British Comedy Magician. He has been entertaining people all over the world for more than 28 years and has regularly performed for British troops serving abroad. His work has led him to perform alongside legendary magicians Penn and Teller in Las Vegas, who he successfully fooled with his famous envelope trick. He also appeared on the Jonathan Ross Television Show. These days, John regularly supports well-known comedian Tim Vine who he is currently touring the UK with. - Written by Colin Thomas

'Dry January' donations help support local cat rescue centre
Karen Campbell
Henry when we collected him
Social Media is often portrayed negatively but a charity in Gloucestershire is very grateful for Facebook and the help of a member who, through 'Dry January', has donated over £800 to their cause. Charlie Kawczynski lives in Gloucester and is a volunteer for New Start Cat Rescue. She has already adopted two rescue cats and is very vocal about this on social media. Karen Campbell lives in Denham, Buckinghamshire, and has a cat called Tito. Both ladies have never met in real life but they are both fans of the best-selling author Stephen Leather and became online friends about 4 years ago. They often chat online and Karen admires the work New Start does and has previously supported New Start. This January, Karen’s daughter decided to do 'Dry January' and bet her mum that she couldn’t do it! Karen
Henry a few days Charlie with her foster later after surgery kittens last year accepted the challenge and kindly did so on behalf of New Start. Karen said that she had gotten into the habit of coming home from work and having a glass or two of wine a night so this would be difficult but she did it and raised a grand total of £823.50 with Gift Aid. When Karen was asked why she contributed to New Start, she replied “I chose New Start as I wanted to support a charity that any money raised for would make a significant difference to. I honestly didn’t anticipate making this amount of money so thank you to friends and family and everyone who donated!” New Start Cat Rescue is a small independent charity in Gloucester which homes over 745 cats per year. It relies solely on donations and is different to most charities as it has no paid employees and is run entirely by volunteers. Charlie has helped out there for over a year doing the newsletter and fostering cats. She even asked
Stephen Leather to be one of their patrons as he is a cat lover himself. "For a small charity this money means so very much," said Charlie. "We have had a really busy winter where we have rescued over 80 cats on a local farm and last week we have had a cat handed to us which is ever so poorly. Henry's fur was completely matted and has had to be shaved. He has cat flu and has had to have some of his teeth removed plus the usual neutering, defleaing and deworming." This money will really help towards Henry and others cats and kittens we care for. Charlie and Karen plan to meet in real life in the next few months and Charlie said she will buy Karen a very large glass of wine! More information about New Start can be found via Facebook www.facebook.com/ newstartcatrescue or via their webpage: www.newstartcat rescue.org.uk If you would like to add to Karen's 'Dry January' go to: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/charliekaren The link to our My Donate BT page for much needed and appreciated donations is: https://mydonate. bt.com/charities/newstartcatrescue The PayPal account for any donations is: jb@newstartcatrescue.org.uk For any more information, please contact Charlie on 07968 758899.

The Federation of Newent Schools Having a flaming good time! At the Federation of Newent Schools, we are passionate about bringing the curriculum to life and providing those memories that develop a love of learning and inspire children. Earlier in the year the children at Picklenash Juniors were ‘treated’ to an unforgettable Victorian experience. As part of their topic researching the Victorian era, the children arrived in traditional costume and were greeted by stony-faced staff and a particularly scary head teacher. Throughout the morning the children experienced traditional Victorian lessons in the traditional style. Discipline was high on the agenda and the use of the dunce hat, back straightener and dreaded cane was rife! The children had an ‘amazing’ time and the resulting written work reflecting on their
experience was exceptional. This term the children in Glebe Infants are learning all about the Great Fire of London. A recent visit from the fire brigade has really brought this topic to life. The children had the opportunity to compare fire equipment from the past with the present and even try it on. However, the most fun was had when they were shown and then tried out, putting fires out the old-fashioned way. Children were running with buckets, sloshing and splashing and having a whale of a time. Currently, the children are building model Tudor houses in design technology in order to make a replica city of London and most exciting of all – the fire brigade
will be back to demonstrate how the real fire of London spread by setting their model on fire! If you are looking for school places for next year’s reception or in any of the other primary year groups we would welcome you to visit Glebe Infant School & Picklenash Junior School. Please feel free to contact the school office on 01531 820589 to arrange a tour of the school with the Head teacher. - Tony Larner, Executive Head Teacher
Big Brew Coffee Morning at Newent Community Centre Glebe Chapel in Newent will be putting on the kettle to raise money for Traidcraft Exchange. They will be holding a ‘Big Brew’ coffee morning on Saturday the 3rd of March at Newent Community Centre from 10.00am to 12.00pm in support of the charity’s ‘Hidden Entrepreneur’ Appeal which focuses on people in developing countries who have the talent and determination to succeed but lack the opportunity. In an extra special twist, this year every donation will be matched by the UK Government, which means that twice as much money will go to help people build businesses and create a better future for their families and communities. Page 40
Margaret Highton who is putting on the event said: "We are really excited that we have the opportunity to raise twice as much money this year. We’ve got an amazing event planned and are delighted to be able to support Traidcraft Exchange in this way." Kate Dixon, Fundraising Manager at Traidcraft Exchange, said: "Everyone who holds or attends a 'Big Brew' event will be helping people in countries like Kenya, Bangladesh and Senegal learn the skills they need to turn their potential into profit – and use that to feed their families and educate their kids." "Anyone who donates to our 'Hidden Entrepreneur' appeal before 11th April this year will
have their donation matched by the UK Government so we can help twice as many people." For more details about the 'Big Brew', contact Margaret Highton on 01531 820245 or email highton1989@gmail.com. Auction Anecdote This month’s anecdote concentrates on an interesting silver designer and raises questions about new technology and online bidding. The lot in question was a rare set of six silver coffee spoons designed by leading British silversmith Omar Ramsden; three of the spoons had rose terminals and three thistle terminals. Omar Ramsden worked from the end of the 19th century until his death in 1939. He was born in Sheffield and studied as a silver apprentice until he met his business partner Alwyn Carr at college. They set up their own business in London and managed to cash in on the Arts & Crafts fashion for handmade silver, working in an unusual quasi-Art Nouveau style. They had studied ‘History of Art’ at the Royal College of Art and many of their designs were historically led, including Gothic, Tudor, Renaissance and Celtic influences. This made them ideal for the many ecclesiastical and municipal commissions they were given while being in tune with the trends of the day. In 1919 Alwyn Carr left the business and Omar worked on, employing up to twenty staff, although he rarely made anything himself. Apparently, he was an expert at marketing and self-promotion – this is perhaps illustrated by his quirky signature ‘Omar Ramsden Me Fecit’ which translates to ‘Omar Ramsden Made Me’. The set of spoons sold at Smiths were consigned by a client from Malvern and, based on a spot of quick research on the internet, were given an estimate of £500/£700. Interest was bound to be generated online by Ramsden collectors and since the online bidding website now allows pre-sale bidding in an eBay-style format, it was possible to see the winning bid in the online catalogue for several days before the auction. In fact, it was the vendor, who had gone online to look at his lots, who rang me up excitedly when he noticed the spoons had a ‘highest bid’ value of £1,150. Displaying online bids like this is meant to encourage further bidding but many auctioneers, including myself, are not terribly keen on the idea as it seems to break traditional auction confidentiality values and spoils the excitement of watching the bidding during the auction itself. On the auction day, I had to start the bidding at £1,150 - this being the next successful bid over the underbid. Of course, with such a strong starting price no further bidding was encountered, which meant we had achieved an excellent sale result but sadly with very little build-up or atmosphere – such is progress! Smiths next Antiques & Collectables Sale is on the 6th April and includes a special section for postcards and stamps. Onion Ed's Blog Hi everyone,
It’s still chilly, at least at the time of writing. As promised last month, I have now had a long chat with Chris Comer (who organises the Onion Show at the Onion Fayre) and he has told me about some great changes for this year’s show at the Fayre on the 8th of September. Chris told me: “I would like to encourage more local gardeners to take part in the Onion Show, which is a major part of the Onion Fayre. This is a local show mainly for local gardeners but does include some from further afield as well.” “The entire show starts, if you will pardon the pun, at grass roots level and in order to encourage more people to take part, I will be offering free packs to anyone in the GL18 postcode area to grow onions and spring onions, which can then be exhibited at the show in September. Each free pack will comprise of a red set of onions (a set is a small onion bulb), a brown set and some spring onion seeds. If you live in the GL18 postcode area, then packs can be obtained by calling 01531 822905 or emailing vegcomer@gmail.com.”
2. The GL 18 class for those who live in the GL 18 area. 3. The open class, which anyone can enter. I think this is a great idea and I’m sure there are many men, women and children out there, who would love to have a go at winning one of the trophies or awards. Planting onions is not difficult! Chris suggests: “Make a small trench or drill approximately one inch deep into the soil and place the onions in the trench 1 foot apart. Then cover them with soil so that the shoulder of the onion is covered.” He offers some further tips on how to grow them: • Do not plant the onions before the 3rd week of March; otherwise they will be ready too early for the show. • Break off dry leaves and loose skin around the neck to allow the bulb more freedom to grow. • If onions do come out of the ground as they grow, gently push them back in so that they are covered.
There are three main groups of classes in the Onion Show for exhibiting the various members of the onion family so there is a lot of scope for everyone to have a go. The groups are:
Later in the year, you will be able to obtain a brochure for the OnionShow which will show you how to enter your prize onions (or leeks) into the competition.
1. The Newent-AllotmentHolders-Only class.
So come on, all you budding gardeners -
An inspiring exhibit let's see you have a go and show the world that Newent is proud of its onion heritage; and so that no one feels left out, in one of my future articles, I will talk about the cookery and vegetable characters that were so successful last year.
