Proposed land exchange to secure the future of the Forest The District Council is advertising the proposed disposal of public open space in Cinderford, including Cinderford Linear Park. This follows Cabinet approval in January which agrees the proposed terms of the exchange between the Council and Forestry Commission. Members of the public will have until 14 May 2014 to comment on the proposed disposal. All public comments will be reported back to Cabinet on 12 June 2014 for consideration, in order for Cabinet to make a final decision on the land exchange. Should the Cabinet confirm that the exchange will proceed; the Commission will seek approval to conclude the exchange. One third of the AAP site is proposed for development. This works out at 26 hectares proposed for development of the 84 hectares making up the AAP area. The Council and Forestry Commission are working to finalise the exact amount of land to be exchanged but it will be approximately 9 hectares of Commission land needed for the 26 hectare Cinderford Northern Quarter site identified for development. In return a proportion of approximately 34 hectares of District Council owned land will transfer to Forestry Commission ownership. There will be no loss of statutory forest owned by the Forestry Commission. If the land exchange goes ahead, the Commission would agree to dedicate all land not currently designated as public open space and to formulise a right of access on foot under the Countryside Rights of Way 2000 (CROW). The area identified within the land exchange would be a key part of securing the future development for the Forest, including the proposed £15m Gloucestershire College Forest of Dean campus, a new £8.9m spine road and other residential, leisure and commercial units. The proposed Northern Quarter regeneration will unlock more than £100m in investment to redevelop the former coalfield site and bring over business opportunities and over a thousand jobs to the district. The advert and plan for the proposed public open space land disposal are available to view at the Forest of Dean District Council offices.

NEWENT’S FIRST EVER BIG LUNCH!
“Save the Date!” Sunday 1st June 2014 Newent’s FIRST EVER Big Lunch is being held from 12.30pm to 4pm and we have lots of activities for the whole family to join in with. Held on the grassy area by the Lake, amongst the activities there will be a treasure hunt and Newent Residents Kerri Greenwald and Daniel Quinton will be in the stocks waiting to be pelted with wet sponges in return for a small donation. Bring your own picnic and enjoy a family day out. The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun. Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of community across the UK. Last year 3.65 million people took to their streets, gardens and community spaces for the fifth annual Big Lunch. This year's Big Lunch is on Sunday 1 June 2014.

Auction Anecdotes Auction prices are constantly subject to changes in fashion and influenced by social and economic factors and yet it is still surprising when an item suddenly becomes very popular overnight. One item which has recently shot up in value is amber which is currently vigorously in demand by the Chinese who see it as a symbol of strength and longevity. With the recent boom in the Chinese economy amber beads and necklaces have been selling like ‘hot cakes’ at auctions all over the country.
Monthly Sales of Antiques & Collectables Silver owl mustard pot Estimate £2500/£3500
However not all amber is to the Chinese taste – it is not the clear amber encasing insects (which has been popular in the west) that is in demand at present, but a very yellow matt or mottled amber which is opaque.
Diamond set brooch Estimate £1800/£2200
Smiths have been selling ‘egg yolk yellow’ amber necklaces since the early autumn for hundreds and even thousands of pounds and so it was no surprise when a long Victorian amber necklace made £2,200 at the April antique sale. However this was not the quick easy sale that you might imagine, as prior to the auction very detailed condition reports were required including measurements, weights and many detailed photographs. The eventual buyer requested over forty close up images of the beads in small groups with the camera flash first on and then off to illustrate the opacity. Yellow amber continues to keep appearing at the saleroom as people discover it’s new found worth and so lets hope that Smiths Antiques Auction on the 9th May includes a good selection. The sale has a special section for silver and jewellery as well as featuring a visit from the team at BBC2’s Antiques Road Trip so it should be an entertaining as well as profitable day!
Friday 9th May at 10am

community THE GREEN ARMY AT TWICKENHAM! Ain’t no stopping us! What a fantastic season the Green Army have had – league winners and now this weekend the lads head to Twickenham for a SECOND year – this time playing in the RFU National Senior Vase Final against Yarnbury RFC – a Yorkshire side in the same league as the team they beat last year in the Junior Vase Final. The team has played well to reach the final and the Semi Final held on Saturday 19th April away to Harrow RFC was a great game with 2 great teams both wanting that place in the final. With a 27-20 victory to Newent the players and supporters returned to Newent to let the celebration continue – the players were looking rather the worse for wear on Sunday evening when they were STILL out in the town basking in the all important victory that sealed their place in the final.
Businesses in town have shown their support by displaying posters and dressing their windows in green and yellow and the battle wagons are all ready to roll out of Newent on Sunday 4th May – it’s an early start as we will be watching another local side who made it to the final in the Junior Vase – Longlevens – we wish them all the very best of luck. The players are leaving the day before so at 1pm on Saturday 3rd May we want as many people as possible to fill the market square area ready to cheer the players off. Newent Runners have very kindly agreed to provide their support by running in front of the bus to ensure there is a memorable send off. We are

And not content with running or even a gentle jog up and over Mayhill, local lady Charmaine Ellis and her friend Becca Yeandle have decided to take on something a little different... Kilimanjaro! In January 2015 these two ladies will be putting months of training to the test as they climb Kilimanjaro raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK – a cause close to their hearts. These two have set personal targets of KEEP ON RUNNING… £3000 each and are both almost one Some of Newent Runners were out third of the way there. I met up with in action last month completing the Charmaine to hear all about their plans Brighton marathon – a really BIG well for raising more money and to see how done to the lovely Kerry Scorah, Adele they are training. No fundraising is easy Mitchell and Leah McTeer – amazing and often it’s harder than the training itself and finding novel ways to attract interest can be hard but how’s this for a unique idea – a beer named especially for your fundraising ? Well Butcombe beers have done just that and now you can buy a pint of effort ladies! Adele has already booked Kiliman-Beero her place in the 2015 Paris marathon from two of the along with Mandy Whittington and Michelle Sterry – who else will be out there pounding the streets ? Oh yes – me! I too can confess to getting my mojo back and I’m once again out early each morning and I’m now all signed up for the Windsor half marathon in September – in fact 2 days before my 50th birthday (!) AND I’m hoping to be allocated a golden bond place for the London Marathon 2015 raising vital local pubs in Newent – the Kings Arms funds for Alzheimers Society – a cause or The George. For every pint of beer very close and dear to me. All I can sold the brewery will donate 20p to say is a) I am totally bonkers b) Thank Cancer Research UK – now I’m not you to the two lovely people who have a beer drinker but I have to say it’s a offered to get me to the 26.2 miles and fantastic idea! c) Watch this space for more running commitments from this town! *Please see details of more events and ways to donate to help their fundraising.
THANK YOU ADELE
It seems to me that we seem to have a high percentage of runners of all abilities which really is amazing - we all have Adele to thank for the weekly Parkrun and I would say without Parkrun

Community grants scheme open for applications Voluntary and community groups across the district (both constituted and non-constituted) are being invited to apply for one off grants of up to £2,000. In total £19,800 is available from Forest of Dean District Council to support community groups who can demonstrate how they work in partnership with others. Groups who provide activities and services focusing on the needs of children under 11, healthy and active ageing, or vulnerable or disadvantaged members of the community will take priority. A spokesperson for the District Council said: “This is a good opportunity for any voluntary or community group from across the district to apply for local funding. This is also a great chance for people to get together and work with their community to achieve things for themselves.” “In our last round of grants in 2013, we had 38 applications with 30 organisations getting a share of the grant funding available. We hope just as many applications, if not more, will come in for this round of grants.” “We will be looking for groups who can demonstrate a good sense of partnership working in their communities to achieve sustainable long lasting results for local people.” All applications will be rated against set criteria with grants being given to those who meet the most criteria and show the best value for money.
Ledbury Art Society Annual Exhibition May 24th, 25th and 26th Ledbury and the surrounding area have plenty of talent, and nowhere is this better illustrated, than in the artwork produced by members of Ledbury Art Society. Our members come from a wide area including Malvern, Ross-on -Wye and Newent, and include leisure painters and semi - professional artist who sell in local shops and Galleries. We use a wide variety of media, including oil, watercolour, acrylic, pastel and pen and ink and subjects range from botanical, landscape, seascape, animals and portrait. Members meet in Ledbury on the first Tuesday of the month to enjoy a demonstration by a Professional Artist and try to hold outdoor painting days throughout the summer, weather permitting! Every year we run a competition with a theme, where members submit a painting, the winner of which is then reproduced as posters and flyers to advertise our Annual Exhibition. This year the theme has been chosen to coincide with the Ledbury Poetry Festival's workshop theme 'The First World War'. The Society Holds an Exhibition every year at The Burgess Hall in Ledbury and this years Exhibition will be from Saturday 24th May until Monday 26th May. Opening times 9am - 4.30 pm everyday. Here You will find paintings, prints and cards at bargain prices and everyday there will be a different artist demonstrating in various media and techniques. At last years Exhibition, we held a 'Best in Show' competition, where members of the public were invited to vote for their favourite painting. This caused lots of lively discussion and this year we will be presenting a trophy in memory of our oldest member Kath Manistre. Another attraction is our Annual raffle and this year we are including a framed painting, kindly donated by one of our professional demonstrators. So make it a date for your diary! As you will be guaranteed a warm welcome and a feast for your eyes, come rain or shine.
Application packs are available from the council’s website at www.fdean.gov.uk and going to the ‘community and living’ section and selecting ‘Community Grants’. Alternatively you can contact the Community Engagement Team on 01594 812617 or by e-mail on community.engagement@fdean.gov.uk The closing date for community grant applications is 4pm Thursday 31 July 2014. Plotting a Vegetable Garden by Pippa Greenwood Even the smallest garden can find space to grow vegetables. Start now and you can enjoy delicious home-grown salads all summer long. Producing useful quantities of your own vegetables doesn’t take up as much space as you might imagine. There’s a lot you can plant out or grow from seed right now that will give you some super-tasty, succulent, and top-quality salads in just a few weeks’ time. And salad leaves grown in ornamental pots can be as decorative as they are nutritious. Before you get sowing or planting, choose the right containers. Big ones are easier to maintain than small ones; and of course bigger pots mean more produce. Go for something of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter, larger if possible. As salad crops tend to be pretty short-term there’s no need to spend a fortune on compost. Ideally choose a good-quality multi-purpose compost, but you can get perfectly acceptable results with the contents of a growingbag. I find the quality of the compost in these isn’t all that brilliant, but for the time you need it – and provided you keep it well-fertilised – it’ll be Page 20
adequate. If you grow your own salad leaves you can get precisely the mix you like best. There are plenty of eye-catching lettuces such as the frilly Lollo, either a gorgeous bright-green standard Lollo a burgundytinged Lollo Rosso or a mixture of both. Treat them as cut-andcome-again crops, snipping off the leaves as you want them but not cutting into to the base, then they’ll put out new shoots and keep cropping for longer. Baby beet leaves are a popular salad ingredient, too. Choose a variety like Bull’s Blood for the prettiest leaves or grow any of the standard varieties, and you’ll also get a great-tasting root crop later on. I generally harvest the young leaves a few at a time but let the plant produce a root too. There are still plenty of tomato plants in the shops now, but hunt carefully to find the ones that are still in top condition. If you choose an outdoor variety it can be grown in a pot on its own, and if you have a big enough container you can grow some other salad ingredients around the edge of the container. If you’re after some fire in your cooking, a chilli pepper thrives in a pot in a warm and very
sheltered spot as do sweet peppers. Fresh herbs can make a salad more interesting too. Choose your favourites and either grow them in a dedicated herb pot with extra grit in the compost for good drainage, or even consider popping a few in with your main crops. Vegetables, like most plants, do best in a relatively warm spot with plenty of sun, so site your containers carefully. You want them to be easily accessible from the kitchen, but it’s more important to ensure they’re sheltered from the wind yet still get enough sun. You may prefer to raise some of your crops in pots and grow them on a bit before planting them out. The garden containers will always be full and looking their best, even while you’re harvesting them. The new plantings will very quickly blend in with the old, and all summer long you’ll have a garden that’s as pleasing to the eye as it is to the tastebuds. Visit Pippa’s website, www. pippagreenwood.com, for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’, the AskPippa Q&A service, Nemaslug, natural pest controls, and lots more.

• Icing sugar, for dusting
TIP The chilled dough will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. Leave at room temperature for about 20 minutes to allow the dough to soften a little before rolling out otherwise it may crack.
Makes 16 - Ready in 30 minutes plus chilling
1 Place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and
beat together until light and fluffy. Beat in the lemon zest and egg then sift over the flour and mix to a crumbly dough.
2 Gather the mixture together with your hands
and knead on a floured surface until smooth. Flatten to a disc shape, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for about 45 minutes.
3 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°F/gas mark 4.
Line two baking sheets with baking parchment.
4 Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to a 5mm thickness and using a 6cm round cookie cutter stamp out 16 circles, re-rolling the dough as necessary.
5 Place the circles of dough on the baking sheets. Spoon about ½ teaspoon of lemon curd in the centre of each circle then pull up two sides of the each circle and pinch together tightly to seal. Chill in the fridge for a further 30 minutes.
6 Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes
until pale golden. Cool for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar.
SHEPPARD HOUSE Therapies Activities and Social Care for the over 60’s Telephone 01531 821227 for further information Our logo explains what our ethos is and we continue to deliver our services locally and further afield to ensure that everyone can be sure of getting the best we can offer.
Sheppard House is a pupose built day centre in Newent and a member organisation of the Forest of Dean Carers Partnership. Pippa English-Penfold, the manager, and her staff team are committed to supporting the clients, familes and carers who use the services offered at Sheppard House. Sheppard House has gained recognition for its quality services and standards in the North Forest of Dean area and is further developing its services for people with disabilities, long-term conditions and mild to moderate dementia. This includes hosting the local Memory Café and the Parkinsons Support Group. We also hold monthly lunch clubs, and the twice weekly Ivan’s Club which is geared toward gentlemen. We offer a range of workshops, outings, pampering, bathing, chiropody, hobby and crafts, wine and food tasting as well as games, some of them a bit more energetic! We provide locally sourced and prepared cooked meals on site in our 5* kitchen. We can help with transport through our very active Dial-a-Ride Service and we have a team of volunteer car drivers to help you attend appointments from hairdressing to hospital. One of our principal objectives is to reduce social isolation and to enable people to come together, make friends and to have a good time. During 2013 some startling research came to light about loneliness, just a few are mentioned here: • • • •
500,000 pensioners only leave home once a week Lonely people are four times more likely to suffer a heart attack and more likely to die as a result than those who are not lonely Lonely people are twice as likely to suffer from colds Over 2 million people aged 65+ in England are affected by depression
So come and join us. In 2013 7,452 visits were made to Sheppard House, 39,150 passenger trips were made on our minibus fleet and approximately 6,000 two course lunches were served. Our prices are very competitive and can include transport if you wish, lunch and all activities, you can come for a full day, half a day or just for lunch. The choice is yours and we are on your door step.

Get Involved in Local Music The orchestra's "year" usually comes to a close round about May, but this year there are several events over the summer to support or take part in. They are summarised below, but take note these are not all; in addition the now regular meetings of Newent Classical Brass and the Pauntley chamber strings will continue, plus the annual social gathering and feast on Sunday, 18th May and the orchestra's trio continues to visit Sheppard House to entertain the elderly and disabled there. You can see from all this that the orchestra is vibrant and thriving. In date order:
Music Heritage Exhibition
The museum and local information displayed in Newent's Market House has received an upgrade and adds now a permanent music heritage section which includes a history of our own orchestra from its inception in 1940 to the present day. The exhibits are open to visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, from Easter Saturday through the summer.
NOMAG
Our music appreciation group meets last Friday every month, 3:00 til 4:30 p.m., St Bartholomews Community Room, Newent. This month's meeting is on 25th April. These sessions are relaxing and stimulating at the same time - how can that be? They are relaxing because they are an opportunity to listen uninterrupted to some lovely music and stimulating because there is the chance also to chat and share ideas.
Orchestral (Annual) Workshop
Saturday, 31st May, 10:00 a.m. til 4:00 p.m., Newent Community Centre. This year we are exploring Schubert's 8th Symphony, "The Unfinished". This is always an enjoyable day for all orchestral musicians, including non-members and, hopefully, this year will include a brass section. Further details.

WW1 Commemoration Creation of a Poppy Trail around Newent Lake
The ceremony was organised to commemorate the start of WW1 by creating a permanent Poppy Trail around the lake and was quite well attended. It was opened by Deputy Mayor and local British Legion leader John Celino, and included attendances by the Mayor, Roger Beard and Bert Bullock (102 years old), who started the poppy seed scattering. It is hoped the poppies will be in flower in time for the Commemoration Concert on 28th June. The trail and concert are part of Newent's commemoration of the start of WW1. - by Colin Thomas Crystal Flame Photography
New Farm Shop opens in Shambles Retail Village The shop is called Char's and Andy's Farm Shop and is the brainchild of Charlotte and Andy who currently run Brockmore Farm in Gorsley. Along with Baby Shambles, Bling Box, Mona's Bags, Nick's Tattoos, Don's Bootee Shop and the Courtyard Cafe/Takeaway the new shop is opening up the centre of Newent further and will enhance customers shopping experience for visitors and locals alike with much more shopping choice. - by Colin Thomas Crystal Flame Photography

Hobbies Small steps towards a prize-winning future become a new art form in the world of online communication. It can take the form of an online diary or may simply record the writer’s observations on life.
The old adage says that “everyone has at least one novel in them” but for some inexperienced writers the thought of writing a novel is a bit like climbing Everest in carpet slippers with only a length of washing line to keep you from falling. For that reason many aspiring authors give up before they’ve even started, and that’s regrettable as these days there are so many other routes writers can take if they want to flex their creative muscles. Writing for pleasure is a low-cost, easily manageable activity that may even –on occasion - offer financial rewards. Flexibility is the keyword and it’s up to you to decide how much time you spend writing, what subjects you write about and whether you invest any money to support your endeavours. So where should you start? The internet has revolutionised the way writers interact with their readership and blogging has
Websites such as Wordpress, Tumblr, Blogger and Weebly all host blog sites and most will offer a basic, free entry so you can establish your presence as a blogger. If you are happy to direct your blog to friends and acquaintances alone, that’s fine, but if you have ambitions to become a star blogger with a following of thousands then you’ll need to offer something truly original that gives inspiration or help to others. If you’re not driven to write about a particular topic or cause, then you might want to try your hand at composing short stories. Flash Fiction – a genre of ultra-short fiction that applies to stories of up to 1,000 words – has recently grown in popularity. If you want to have a go at writing Flash Fiction there are a number of online competitions you can enter, but beware those sites that charge exorbitant fees to participate. The website www.flash500.com charges a relatively low fee of £5 to take part in competitions, for
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts
which participants have the chance to win up to £300. It’s natural to lack confidence when you first start to write, but fortunately there is a lot of training and support available to fledgling writers. If you fancy writing serials or short stories for women’s magazines, you can attend a Woman’s Weekly fiction workshop in London for around £65. If romantic fiction is your thing, you can pick up hints and tips on Mills and Boon’s website (www. millsandboon.co.uk) and find out how to submit a story to their editors. Writing can be an isolating pastime so you may prefer to join a writer’s group. The National Association of Writers’ Groups (www. nawg.co.uk) can provide information on local meetings, or guide you to collaborate with other writers online. Finally, it goes without saying that the best way to gain literary skills is to soak up the work of high quality writers such as Charles Dickens or Virginia Woolf. If you’re not sure where to start with contemporary authors then you could search through the lists of nominees for high profile fiction awards such as the Man Booker Prize. It may seem like an impossible dream now, but there may come a time when your own name features on that list! By Kate McLelland Page 35
Furnishing Finesse Is your living room looking more drab than fab? Then it’s time for an image overhaul. One or two new items of furniture, some revamps or repairs, or simply a different layout, can make all the difference, says Katherine Sorrell. Where to start
Firstly, take a long, hard look at what you already have. Most of us own a collection of family heirlooms and hand-me-downs, high-street buys, chain-store pieces and perhaps the odd junk-shop find. Step one is to work out what you want to keep and what should be dispensed with and what could be revamped. Then, assess your overall style – old or new, shabby chic or pristine, rustic or sophisticated, plain and slender or heavy and ornate? The key to mixing old and new is to ensure the overall look has coherence. Materials, scale and decorative style are all important, as are colour and texture. If things aren’t quite working, perhaps you can shift something that stands out to another room, or sell it on.
What’s your style?
• Antique Key styles are Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian. Genuine Georgian pieces are expensive but beautiful, and mix surprisingly well with modern furniture. Victorian furniture tends to be heavier and on a larger-scale, while Edwardian pieces are a little plainer and lighter. • Retro Furnishings from the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies in bright colours and unusual materials such as plastic or Page 36
wire, they’re tricky to mix with other furnishings but make an eye-catching focal point. • Design classics Covetable chairs and other pieces by mid-20th century names such as Eames, Breuer, Le Corbusier, Aalto, Wegner, Day and Race. Originals are pricey; some reproductions are available. • Country Anonymous, functional wooden pieces, generally from the UK or France (the latter is more decorative). New or old, these pieces are useful, pretty and tend to work well with most other furnishings.
Designing a living room layout
Draw a plan (overhead view) of the room using graph paper, marking the positions of windows, door, fireplace, radiators, sockets and any fitted furniture. If using paper, cut out paper shapes, at the correct scale, to represent the proposed furnishings. Do they work as a whole, or can they be moved to create more floor space? Are there any ‘dead’ or crowded areas?
Choosing and arranging living room furniture
It was once traditional for living rooms to be arranged with the fire as a focal point. These days it’s more likely to be the TV, but
you can also have subsidiary focal points, such as a work of art or a view. Placing two sofas so they face each other is both comfortable and practical. Modular seating units in an Lshape (or even a U-shape) are a great alternative. In a small room, stools can double as mini-tables and be pushed out of the way when not in use. A coffee table takes up a lot of floor space but side tables are another option, as is a long, thin console table pushed against the back of the sofa. The living room also needs the right furniture in which to keep things such as DVDs, books and cables out of sight, as well as display areas for attractive possessions. Choose plain, inexpensive bookcases that can be painted the same colour as your walls, or go for a designer option such as a sleek sideboard or modular units or even Oriental and Indian-style pieces, in beautiful woods and with lovely detailing. Finally, add boxes and baskets to disguise awkward items that simply won’t fit anywhere else. Sometimes you just want to stretch your legs out and lounge. A side table is at hand for a drink or a book. Newent Anniversary Parkrun attracts 82 runners Newent celebrated its 1st anniversary Park Run last month with a tremendous turnout of 82 runners.
Braving a cold morning these runners included a Hippo in a Tutu, a banana, children dressed up. old and young runners and even a baby pushed round the course in a pushchair. The Newent Park Run was conceived a year ago by a group of local running enthusiasts, headed by Adele Mitchell, and grew into the event we see today. The oldest runner to take part so far was 82.
Amongst the runners was Dan Quinton and his son Mikey who were raising money for the Kelli Smith Appeal (Families Against Blastoma), a fund that will allow Kelli access to potentially life saving treatment not available on the NHS.Coupled with this, as if it is not enough, Kelli's father, Tom, has now been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and shows amazing strength in his resolve to ensure the money is raised to help Kelli. A true inspiration indeed.
It is a very professionally run race where runners have a bar code to control timings and placings. So successful has it been that it now provides tea You can donate by goand cake at the end of the ing to www.justgiving. race, is also giving awards com/onesierun and it has even spawned a - by Colin Thomas Crystal Flame Photography Newent Runners Group.
