Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Welcome to the November issue of your local community magazine. Inside we have plenty of interesting articles to read and lots of local events happening in and around the area. Remembrance Sunday this year falls on 12th November, when the nation remembers and honours those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. Services will be held at St Mary's Church and in Oxenhall (see 'What's On' section for further information). On Saturday 25th November, Newent's Christmas lights will be switched on. There will be Christmas stalls and festive entertainment throughout the afternoon with the parade commencing at 5.00pm. The 25th also marks the start of the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary's Church which will run until the beginning of December – don't miss this wonderful opportunity to see over 100 beautifully decorated trees! If you are a local business and would like to be included in our December and January issues, please contact us early as our print dates are earlier than usual for these issues with the Christmas and New Year holidays coming up. Also, if you would like to add any upcoming events to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk or like our Facebook page and we will be happy to share the event for you to promote it to the local community - again please contact us early to avoid disappointment! I hope you have a great month and see you back here in December - where has this year gone...!? Best wishes,

French Omelette with Garlic Tomatoes Serves 1
Ready in 15 minutes
Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.
Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve
Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides. When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette.
TIP
Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy. Page 8
5
Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.

Hobbies Bottoms Up! Let’s Toast This Terrific Tasting Hobby By Kate McLelland Wine tasting is the practice of using the senses of touch, sight and smell to evaluate different wines. It is believed that the first wines were produced in Mesopotamia - an ancient region that included present day Iraq and Kuwait together with parts of Syria and Turkey - between 4,000 and 3,000 BC. By the time of the Roman Empire, the production of wine had spread throughout the Mediterranean, even as far as the British Isles. However it was not until the 14th century that more formalised ways of sampling and evaluating wines began to emerge.
combination of grapes - used, while “bouquet” refers to the scent created as the wine matures.
The four sTages of wine TasTing The first phase in the four recognised stages of winetasting is appearance. The liquid is examined to see how well it reflects or refracts light, whether it is cloudy or clear, and how much the process of oxidisation over time might have affected its colour.
The final part of the process is to consider the impression left on your tongue when you have either swallowed or used a spittoon to clear the wine from your palate. At this stage you’ll be able to tell a well-made wine by its crisp, clean finish: poor quality wines often leave a watery and insubstantial aftertaste. The best quality wines leave a “long finish”: that’s a flavour that remains in the mouth after the wine has gone.
The wine’s smell (also known as its “nose”) is then judged. Tasters must attempt to describe the perfume it gives off, as determined by its “aromas” and “bouquets”. “Aroma” refers to the smell of the specific grape - or Page 10
To judge the taste, swirl the wine around your mouth so your taste buds can do their work. As well as teasing out the specific flavours of the wine, you’ll be considering the amount of sweetness and/or tartness you find. You might also want to judge the amount of astringency (bitterness caused by the tannin in grape skins) you can detect. Overall, you’ll be looking for “balance” in the wine, deciding whether all its components are in harmony.

a number of excellent courses, taking place nationwide. On the jobs and training website run by the Reed Group you’ll find a short online course costing £97 (visit the Hospitality and Catering section at reed. co.uk for details), alternatively the well-known TV wine connoisseur Jilly Goolden runs wine-tasting afternoons under the title “The Wine Room” at £125 per person, taking place in the Ashdown Forest, East Sussex (telephone 01342 822251 or email wineroom@ jillygoolden.com). As you develop confidence you’ll be able to explore some of the 400 or more commercial vineyards that operate in the UK. Visit England (visitengland. com) has a list of vineyards, many of which are open to the public, offering luxury on-site accommodation in B&Bs and self-catering accommodation so you can relax and make the most of your wine-tasting experience. Whether you’re planning to become the next Jilly Goolden or you’re simply someone who loves to explore the subtleties and complexities of wine, you are certain to find a course or vineyard experience to suit. A Busy November by Pippa Greenwood
Despite the seasonal slowdown there are lots of jobs which, if done now, could end up saving you time and money later on - so here are the top November gardening tasks to get to grips with. Hoe off weeds that are around now, as some might still set seed during mild, damp periods. Provided they have no seed pods their top-growth can safely be composted, but bin, burn or rot down fleshy weed roots to prevent them growing in the compost heap! Cut back or pick off obviously diseased leaves and stems to neaten flower beds and borders, and remove some of the foliage that is dying back purely due to the time of year. Leave some deteriorating but healthy foliage in place to provide protection for the crowns of more fragile plants. Rabbits become more of a menace as natural food supplies reduce, so make sure that rabbit netting is not damaged and that trees, especially those that have been planted recently, are fitted with tree guards. If there is a sizeable tree near your lawn, rake up fallen leaves on a regular basis to prevent damage to the grass beneath. Page 14
Trees, shrubs and climbers that have been planted recently may need protection from frost and cold winds over their first winter. Use a layer or two of horticultural fleece draped over the plant and pegged in place; it can be removed on warmer days. Fleece ‘jackets’ with a drawstring and in various sizes are available from my website, see www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops. If you’re planning on hedgeplanting, remember that many hedging plants are cheaper if bought ‘bare root field grown’, meaning lifted from their nursery field without being potted on. Order now to make sure you get the pick of the bunch. Bare root plants are not feasible once the leaves start to appear next year. Use seed catalogues and websites to help decide what you want to grow next year. Many suppliers offer seeds and young plants of many vegetables, so order now and you can relax, knowing that you have got your first choice selection. Check out my website, www.pippagreenwood. com/grow-your-own, for a Grow Your Own package perfect for the less experienced vegetable grower - the plants you choose come with weekly advice
emails telling you exactly what you need to be doing. Established clumps of bamboo should be thinned out now. The extra space that the remaining canes will have will allow them to grow away better, and also gives them more freedom to move about in that way which makes bamboos so very appealing. Less tender bulbs such as nerines and many of the agapanthus will winter better if you give them a little protection now. Mound dry chipped bark or other mulch over the area in which they are planted. And last but not least, before water butts fill up with autumn rain grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of plant and general gunge! Rinse out and then re-install ready to collect some rain. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a gorgeous selection of useful gardening items, perfect for gifts too, including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, fleece jackets, cloches, fruit cages, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Top Tips for the Perfect Christmas Tree – by The Natural Christmas Tree Company 1. Where possible buy your tree from a Christmas tree grower who is a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association to guarantee quality and freshness. 2. When choosing your tree, be sure to pick a healthy looking one with dark green needles (they should not be dull or dried up) and strong looking branches. This way there is a good chance of it still looking its best on Christmas Day. 3. Always consider the type of tree you want to have and the best time to purchase it. The traditional Norway Spruce, for example, should only be chosen from the second week of December onwards. If you want to put your tree up earlier than that, the best choice would be the low drop Nordmann Fir.
4. As soon as your tree is home, cut the bottom 5cm off it. This will allow your tree to take up water better as a layer of sap forms on the old cut, preventing water uptake. (Alternatively, you can ask members of staff at The Natural Christmas Tree Company to cut this off for you.) 5. Make sure you put the tree up in a waterholding stand. Keep the water topped up daily and the tree away from direct heat if possible. 6. For potted trees that you may want to plant out in the garden after Christmas the correct care is essential. Always leave the potted tree next to the house or in the garage to enable it to get used to the warmer conditions. This is crucial if the weather outside is particularly cold. The same is true for cut trees. 7. Decorate the tree however you want and enjoy the festive season!

Newent Memorial Hall – Then and Now Newent Memorial Hall is a famous Newent landmark that has been around for more than 60 years, yet there does not seem to be a great deal of history recorded about it. Discussions to build a Memorial Hall started in 1943 at a public meeting held in Newent. A committee was formed and within a year the Old Cattle Market was purchased as a place to site the hall, however, it was only in 1952 that the hut was found. Originally located at Foxley Camp near Hereford, it used to be one of a number of Nissan Huts, which was built by Canadians, occupied by Americans and later used to house Polish families. The hut was purchased and subsequently dismantled by employees from Wildsmiths, who endured the mammoth task of taking it apart piece by piece, nail by nail, before Ron Lewis could transport it to Newent for erection. Once there, local carpenters rebuilt the hut and local bricklayers duly added brick walls on the outside to create the hall. The hall was fitted with an oak dance floor, a seating capacity of 220, a minstrels gallery and a stage with, what was then, state of the art theatrical lighting equipment and effects provided by the Newent Amateur Dramatic Society. It was hoped at the time that changing rooms and a kitchen would be added in due course. On Saturday 3rd April 1954 the hall was formally opened by local dignitary Dr Lucas Johnstone. A service of dedication followed, after which an Inaugural Dance was held. At the opening, Doctor Johnstone paid tribute to the generosity of the people of Newent who helped out with the project. He dedicated the hall to the memory of those men from Newent and surrounding parishes who had sacrificed their lives for freedom and justice in both wars as well as to the people of Newent who had contributed to the War Fund.
The Memorial Hall as it is today The hall has been used extensively throughout its history by many organisations and it is still in demand today. It is, for example, the current home for concerts given by the Newent Orchestra which has successfully performed many regular concerts at the hall over the years and was proud to present the inaugural performance of Newent’s very own symphony at the hall earlier on this year. The inspiring "Newent Symphony”, written by local composer Bill Anderton, was met with great success and approval. The hall is also used as the venue for the annual awardwinning Onion Show and many clubs and societies such as the Choral Society, the U3A, Newent Gardening Club and Newent Quilters meet The hall full at the 2017 Onion here. Classes held at Show during the Onion Fayre the Memorial Hall range from Ballroom Dancing, Zumba, Yoga and Pilates to Fun and Fitness Classes and Balance Classes for the Elderly.
Later, on 11th November 1955, a ceremony of the unveiling and dedication of the memorial plaque was held at the Memorial Hall. In 2012 the Newent & District Branch of The Royal British Legion, the very organisation dedicated to the ideal that the same Dr Johnstone helped to set up, moved to the Memorial Hall, where it still holds its monthly meetings today. It was felt that this would better reflect the reasons for building the hall in the first place. Congratulatory plaques thanking the people of the town and others for their contributions to the war fund and a plaque commemorating the naming of HMS Newent, a trawler brought into service as a minesweeper, can be seen on the walls of the Legion Room at the hall. The Newent & District Branch of The Royal British Legion have now erected a “List of Remembrance" that each month names those who lost their lives in conflicts gone by during that month. This is a must-see as it represents a poignant reminder of what we owe to those who gave their lives. The Legion will also be hosting a special concert next year to commemorate the ending of WW1, the venue for which has not been set yet. This will be a very special concert so watch this space. Page 28
Flower Arranging Demonstration at the hall during The Flower Festival 2016 The weekly Friday Market (9.00am to 11.30am) is another of various one-off events held at the hall. It has taken off very well in recent years with more and more stalls appearing. It is good to see markets coming back to the town and it is hoped that this is just the start. Anyone who wishes to obtain information on the Friday Market or wants to know how to hire the hall should contact Mary Townsend on 01531 820264. - Written by Colin Thomas With thanks to the Ledbury Reporter, John Celino and Mary Townsend.

Home & Interiors Scandi Winter Trends
If you thought lagom was a kind of bean and gluggavedur a creamy Christmas tipple, don’t miss Katherine Sorrell’s guide to the Scandinavian interiors trends that will see you through the winter. Hygge The best known of our Scandi set, hygge was massive last winter and it looks like it’s here to stay. Pronounced ‘hoog-uh’, the Danish word is not directly translatable into English, but the overall concept stands for cosiness and contentment, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, and enjoying good times with friends and family. When you recognise that special moment – it’s the feeling of hygge. It’s well known that the Danes are the happiest people on the planet, and maybe it’s all because of hygge, which is an integral part of the nation’s culture and psyche. The high season for hygge is winter – it helps make long, dark evenings more bearable – and, especially, Christmas. Key elements? Home-cooked comfort food; Page 30

eating with family or friends; candles or pools of warm, well-positioned light; reading in front of the fire on a rainy day; squashy sofas and armchairs; a warm drink; sheepskins, knitting; hot water bottles; piles of throws and cushions; board games; a log burner. Overall, it’s not about spending money, but trying to be kind to yourself; hygge is when there’s nothing to worry or annoy you, and you take great pleasure from simple things. Lagom The lagom trend hails from Sweden, and it roughly translates as ‘not too little, not too much’ – i.e. just the right amount. It’s applied to everything, from drinking coffee to buying a house, and its aim is fairness and contentment. Apparently, while hygge is a momentary state of happiness, lagom is more to do with an overall approach to life. And this sense of moderation and balance extends naturally to home design – functional, unfussy, minimal and wellmade pieces are key, with an emphasis on durability and sustainability. Naturally, Ikea has created a LIVE Lagom project, in which the Swedish flatpack superstore ‘supports customers and co-workers
with products, workshops, bespoke advice and an active community to help save energy and water, reduce waste and promote a healthy lifestyle.’ How else can you incorporate a sense of lagom in your home? Keep things simple, declutter, tidy, reduce your carbon footprint (LED light bulbs, for a start) and choose furniture and accessories that are pared-back, practical and stylish without being showy. Use neutral colours and natural materials. gLuggavedur The latest Scandi trend is gluggavedur, from Iceland. It means, literally, ‘windowweather’, or an overall concept of curling up indoors while watching the world go by outside, specifically when the weather looks nice from indoors but is probably not so great when you’re actually out in it. Make the most of your living room or bedroom and looking out on a cold, sunny day by enhancing your window area – beautiful curtains or blinds, perhaps with a pretty tie back or a tactile blind pull; maybe some wooden shutters, a window seat with a cushion and a throw, and even some plants, candles or carefully selected art works nearby. main image: oslo grey and lime cushions, £50 each, and throws, £125 each, all aLSo Home: 01483 608 614; www.alsohome.com

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre RA Exhibition, Sarah Gwyer
Newent Community School Principal Alan Johnson said: "It's marvellous to see yet another example of a Newent Community School pupil going on to achieve such success. To exhibit at the Royal Academy is a great accolade and we are extremely proud of Sarah. The staff here work tirelessly to help all pupils fulfil their potential and art is just one subject in which students have gone on to top-level success."
A former Newent Community School artist is delighted to have featured in one of the world’s most prestigious exhibitions. Following her success at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition in London, Sarah Gwyer, who attended the Watery Lane school from Year Seven to her A’ Levels in 2003, and who has previously been shortlisted for a national artist of the year award, is now working on fresh celebrity-inspired creations, some of which will be on display in Gloucestershire. Sarah was selected to show at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition in London, her ‘Amy Remixed’, a mixed media sculpture of Amy Winehouse, was displayed alongside works ranging from paintings, drawings and sculptures to film and photography, by both internationally acclaimed artists and other rising stars of the art world. It sold in the first week for a four-figure sum and Sarah is also thrilled at the new opportunities displaying her work to such a large audience is now bringing.
Sarah added: "I had the best possible start in my art career at Newent School. My teachers were fantastic and their encouragement and support in the early days gave me the confidence to continue in a career that requires a lot of determination. At school, I was able to take two separate Arts courses which meant I had a really wide range of experiences and skills meaning I’m now able to work in many mediums." After leaving Newent, Sarah studied Fine Art in Cardiff and then did a Masters in Printmaking at the University of the Arts, London. By the time of her graduate show she was exhibiting simultaneously in London and New York. Working in textiles, sculpture and print, her work reflects themes of celebrity, consumerism and commercialism and features familiar faces and pop imagery. She says she aims to merge the boundaries between art and craft practices, pushing traditional ways of working to new levels and audiences. She hit the headlines in 2009 for her debut exhibition on the theme of modern day icons which featured Princess Diana, Princes William and Harry, Kate Moss and Kate Middleton with halos. In 2007 she was shortlisted for the prestigious Welsh Artist of the Year award for her sparkling bead portrait of Charlotte Church.
The 32-year-old who lives in the Cotswolds and describes her work as contemporary pop, drawing on influences from Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst, said: “It has been such a thrill to exhibit alongside artists I so admire and for my work to be seen by so many thousands of people."
The artwork for the Royal Academy exhibition is selected by a committee of Royal Academicians which this year was chaired by Eileen Cooper. Sarah, who says she aims to inspire others and draw more attention to craft ways of working through her creations, was selected by Eileen Cooper R.A. to feature in the exhibition and by Yinka Shonibare R.A. for one of his rooms.
"I was also chosen to be featured in the BBC2 documentary on the exhibition so my work has reached an even wider audience. Showing at the Royal Academy has opened up lots of opportunities for new artworks which I am currently working on."
The exhibition, which has just ended, ran at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly. Following her success there a fresh Amy Winehouse-inspired piece can be seen at various locations around Gloucestershire this Autumn as part of Big Heart 2017.
New pieces Sarah is working on following her exhibition success include two beaded sculptures, one featuring Beyoncé while pregnant with twins.

ROTARY PAUL HARRIS FELLOWSHIP AWARD FOR PAM TOVEY, HIGHNAM CUBS
a Rotary member, the Club wished to mark her incredible contribution to scouting. Pam has been a Cub Leader in Longlevens, Huntley, and Highnam for well over 50 years. At the award, Pam said, ‘scouting has been part of my life for so many years, which I have thoroughly enjoyed, and it has given me personally, as well as the young people I have worked with, so many opportunities.’ Congratulations to Pam on her amazing achievement!
ROTARY MEETING ‘FLIGHT OF THE SWANS’
Paul Harris presentation to Pam Tovey The Rotary organisation was founded over a century ago by Paul Harris in America. One of the highest honours in Rotary is for a member to receive the Paul Harris Fellowship, which is named after our founder. It recognises those special members, and very occasionally non-members, who have gone beyond the call of duty to serve their community and made a difference to others, often those less fortunate than themselves. At a recent meeting in the Over Farm Barn, the Newent Club was very proud to present the award to Mrs Pam Tovey from Highnam. Whilst not
Members gather at Over Farm Barn for ‘Flight of the Swans’ At our Club meeting at the Over Farm Barn, owner Rob Keene gave a very interesting presentation of his microlight trip from Russia, back to the Wild Fowl & Wetlands Trust site at Slimbridge, following the flight of the Bewick swans. Also present was Sacha Dench, who actually followed the swans in a microlight, with Rob providing the valuable backup for the often daring and dangerous flight back to Slimbridge. The Club plans to visit the WWT in the near future.

Burglary Crime Prevention Advice
Road and the Crofts 13:00- 14:00 – Junction of Onslow Road and Reevers Road 14:00-15:00 – Junction of Meek Road and The Ryelands
We have now reached that time of the year where the days are getting shorter and the nights longer, and statistics show that burglary generally rises throughout the winter months. Burglars will take any opportunity they can, so from a police point of view if we can get homeowners to remove that opportunity we’ll find that we will get fewer victims of crime.
• Mark all valuable property with either an Ultra-Violet pen or a forensic marking kit and include property in your sheds/garages. If they get caught with your property… they have no defence. • Use a padlock on your shed, burglars take advantage of your shed being unlocked especially if you have a lot of expensive garden equipment. Consider a shed alarm or anti-theft screws. • Think about installing a House Alarm. Even a basic alarm can deter a burglar. • Consider setting up a Neighbourhood Watch within your area. Keeping an eye out for each other will bring to light anything suspicious.
Sometimes it is obvious that noone is home and advertising your property as being empty can be a great opportunity for a burglar. Don’t give burglars the opportunity!
Remember, if you take the precautions to protect your property and report any suspicious behaviour, together we can prevent this crime from happening within your community.
Some simple precautions can make a difference in preventing your property from being targeted by burglars:
If you would like free Crime Prevention advice on your property please contact PCSO Joshua Griffiths on Joshua.griffiths@gloucestershire. pnn.police.uk.
• Leave a light on in the house or buy a timer switch. • Net curtains prevent easy viewing into your home. • Adequate security lighting around the outside of your home. • Strong and secure locks on doors and windows and include your access gates leading to the rear. • Defensive Planting (thorns, bushes) can deter potential offenders.

THE MARKET HOUSE
Newent Town Council’s Newsletter A Message from the Mayor Cllr June Davies I was very privileged to be asked to open the Onion Fayre this year, arriving at the main stage in a tuktuk. I have travelled in many modes of transport in my time, but never in a tuk-tuk. Quite an experience! For the last eighteen years, Mike and I have spent the day in The Memorial Hall with the Onion Show so it was good that we had the opportunity for the first time to see what the Onion Fayre is all about. We were amazed at how many people actually took part in the event. I would like to thank the Onion Fayre committee for all their hard work in continuing to put everything together and making the event so successful year on year. The Market House stewards also deserve a vote of thanks for opening up the building on weekends through the summer to talk about its history to visitors. Your efforts are very much appreciated. I am now in the process of organising a Civic Carol Service at St Mary’s Church, to be held during the Christmas Tree Festival week which follows on from the Christmas Lights Switch-On.
Information Boards at The Lake The Council is pleased to announce that a new information board and
Page 40
a replacement for the old board at The Lake are being installed. We hope that people will be pleased with the result and that it will encourage visitors and residents to explore the area and enjoy the wildlife that is attracted to this part of our town.
Picnic Bench Funding Success The Town Council has received the sum of £1,000 in grant funding from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. The money will fund the purchase of two picnic benches that can also be used by wheelchair users. Both will be placed around The Lake, one near the child play area and the other further round. We hope that these will be well used by all visitors to The Lake.
Planning Notices and the Role of the Town Council Newent Town Council, along with all other parish and town councils in the Forest of Dean does not have the power to grant or refuse planning applications. That is the role of the District Council. However, the town councillors do consider applications and make recommendations to the District. If you are likely to be affected by these decisions, the council would welcome your views. Although the District Council’s website has space for comments, these are not always made in time
for Newent Town Council to consider them. Do get in touch if you wish to make your views known.

Auction Anecdote Smiths most recent sale included a special section for stamps and postcards both of which sold extremely well with the postcards almost flying off the shelves and often doubling or tripling their estimates. Postcards have become very collectable in recent years and genuine early 20th century collections often command high prices – top price in the September sale was £300 paid for a collection of topographical cards from around the Evesham area. In the stamp section, the most desirable lots attracted very strong competition with a GB album selling for £1,950 against a £1,200/£1,800 estimate. However, since Smiths employ consultants to catalogue and value these specialist items my knowledge is far too sketchy to concentrate on any of these results for my anecdote. Back on firm ground for me valuation-wise was a beautiful 19thcentury cylinder musical box by Nicole Freres, who are incidentally the best and most famous makers of musical boxes. This example played twelve tunes which is unusual as the more standard repertoire only extended to eight. The box attracted a small but enthusiastic number of collectors – some of whom travelled quite some distance to view and try the box in person and others whom telephoned for condition reports and also asked to hear a demonstration down the telephone! The owner had obviously looked after his treasured box and the rosewood case and floral marquetry lid were in beautiful condition whilst the movement inside had only had one small repair to one of the teeth and was in full working order. The box was wound and played on several occasions during the viewing which added a jovial tone to the saleroom. It sounded lovely, much better than the two old gramophones which were also played but sounded like they needed some attention. On the day two telephone lines were booked but it surprisingly sold to a local dealer in the room for £2,600 against a £700/£900 estimate. Smiths next sales are on the 10th November (with a special silver and jewellery theme) and 8th December (with a special section for antique toys). Newent says farewell to a well-loved character In a moving service in St Mary's Church, the people of Newent recently said goodbye to Harold I. Markey (also known as ‘Pym’) who passed away in August, having achieved the ripe old age of 94 years. Pym was born in Kings Norton, Birmingham, in 1922. As one of four children, he came to Newent with his parents Ivor and Gertrude when he was around 3 weeks old. They initially lived with Polly and Frank Jenkins at the blacksmiths at Wharf Pitch before moving to Lancaster Terrace. He attended Picklenash School until he was 14, leaving to get a job at Lancaster Sawmills. In one of the several conversations he has had with Martin Brown of Newent's Local History Society, Pym revealed a short biosketch of some of his earlier memories of Newent. In his early years, he took an active part in the ‘Rovers’ which was for boys older than scouts. Together with a group of other boys, they would regularly cycle to Filton Airfield to look at the planes fly before cycling back the 40 miles to Newent. When WW2 started he joined the roster for ARP work. His main task was to be a messenger on a bike
whenever the phones were damaged. Pym joined up in 1938 after exaggerating his age (he was actually 16) as did many at the time. He went into the Young Soldiers Battalion, the 70th Battalion of the Glosters. After some time and some very tough training, he passed off in 1943 and volunteered to join the 3rd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment who had already gone out to Tunisia. Having joined his Regiment in North Africa, he was later to be part of the Airborne landings in Sicily. It was in 1944, whilst taking part in the infamous Arnhem landings (Operation Market Garden), that he was captured and sent to the prisoner of war camp in Halle where there was very little food, and the guards showed no interest in the prisoners as they had their own problems to deal with. Six months later, during an allied bombing raid close-by, Pym managed to escape and with the aid of others eventually made his way home. After being discharged and returning to Newent he took up work as a builder, rejoining the Newent Town Band where he learnt to play the trombone. Before the war, he had played the Tenor Horn but that place was filled by someone else while he was away.
During the 1950’s he would regularly go on holidays, camping across Europe, with his family friends Ron Green and Don Boughton and their families. Pym met and married Geraldine from Ruardean and both lived at Ruardean Hill together before retiring to Newent. Pym remembered going to the home of composer and Glastonbury Festival founder, Rutland Boughton, in 1958 to fix a lock and being invited to meet the famous black American singer Paul Robeson who was staying there at the time. In 1973, Pym became one of the founding members of the Newent 41 Club for retired Round Tablers, which received its Charter at a special dinner at the Bell Hotel, Coleford, where Pym was the special guest. He is also fondly remembered for being one of the founder members of the successful Newent and District Branch of the British Legion. When asked where his nickname came from, he would proudly state that it came from a very famous footballer, though not which one, leaving perhaps yet another mystery! - Written by Colin Thomas

FOREST OF DEAN DISTRICT
Gentle Walks
We know that walking and exercise in general really helps improve circulation, promotes restful sleep and can enhance moods. We also believe that spending time outdoors and connecting with nature can enhance general feelings of well-being. We have therefore joined with Orchard Trust in providing walks for people with dementia and their carers to get outside and meet like-minded people, these walks being suitable for those who use walking aids & chairs. The FOD Walking for Health program also organizes regular walks throughout the Forest, several of which are classed as easy and offer between 10 minutes and one hour of walking. Those with dementia and their carers are welcomed, though it is advisable to phone the Walk Leader in advance to check that the walk will be suitable for your needs.
All the walks listed below aim to finish with a ‘cuppa’ & a biscuit, we've earned it after all!
