From the Editor Hello Reader,

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Welcome to the November issue of the Newent Magazine. Once again it’s jam-packed with events happening in and around town, local businesses, interesting articles and community news. October saw the last half term holiday before the Christmas break and we are now steadily steering towards the end of the year, but for now let’s concentrate on what’s ahead of us and remember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes Night is back to bring us bonfires and fireworks – make sure you dress up warmly when you go out and don’t forget to keep your pets as far away from the noise as possible. Your vet can help with advice and medication for your pet so do give them a call. Another major event in November is Remembrance Sunday on 8th November. The Royal British Legion is hoping to once again raise millions with their Poppy Appeal, and this month you’ll see the theme of our front covers is centred around Remembrance Day – please support the Royal British Legion in any way you can. This month, BBC Children in Need also raises much needed funds. Their Appeal Night will be live on BBC One on 13th November. Many schools, nurseries, playgroups, workplaces and shops in the area will be raising funds for this worthy cause – it will be a week of non-stop fun! If you have an event planned to raise money for Children in Need or any other charity, then don’t forget to email your story and pictures to office@glosdirectories.co.uk so that we can include them in the next issue.

Auction Anecdote Although I am tempted to talk about all the exciting diamond and antique jewellery coming up for sale in our next antiques sale on the 6th November I am aware that I have given jewellery unfair coverage in recent articles. I am therefore going stick strictly to the boys toys this time as we have been quietly selling off a huge collection of tin plate cars in recent sales and they have been doing rather well. Tinplate toys were first produced in large quantities in the mid-19th century, primarily by German makers such as Lehmann, Bing and Marklin. The toys were made from thin sheets of steel coated in tin – hence the name tinplate. After WWII German production declined and Japan took over as the world leader exporting mainly to America (although toys were often marked as foreign due to the unpopularity of Japan after the war). In the 1950’s and 1960’s plastic began to take over for toy production as it was cheaper and safer and nowadays tinplate toy production is all but extinct. The reason the toys have been sold off quietly at Smiths is that they are very much an online ‘thing’ with collectors purchasing from all over the world including in our last sale from the Netherlands and Israel. The first consignment of toys were brought in by an elderly client for the September auction and the auctioneers were delighted to be asked to sell such a charming niche collection which literally just flew off the rostrum with very little trouble or inconvenience. They were then very surprised when the vendor returned a few weeks later with a second collection for the October sale and since then a further seventy plus vehicles have been delivered for the November sale. In the October sale prices were very keen and included £700 paid for an unmarked early tinplate ‘Packard’ and £780 for an unmarked Lyons Sweets delivery van. Another delivery van by Lehmann (one of the most sought after German makers) made £440 whilst an amusing tinplate tank with gunner moving in and out of the cockpit made £140.With such ‘stimulating’ results the next consignment are now all catalogued and parked up on the shelves raring to go at the next sale on the 6th November. Smiths next sale also features a large selection of silver, gold and jewellery just in time for Christmas gifts.Viewing is on the 5th November 10am to 7pm and on the morning of the sale.Tel 01531 821776 or see the website www.smithsnewentauctions.co.uk for a fully illustrated catalogue. - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

MR SHAMBLES’ MEWS Welcome to my first monthly Mews Letter! I’m Mr. Shambles, probably the most famous cat in Newent. I love wandering around town and I have my “special” places, in particular I spend most of my time in The Shambles Village. They say I’m the Shambles’ cat, but I prefer to think of them as MY people. WHAT? You’ve never visited The Shambles? I’ll give you a quick cat’s eye guided tour around this hidden gem of a shopping village with lots of “Olde Worlde” charm. Wander in through the enclosed Alley from Church Street or along the drive from Court Road which is where I will start from. First on the right is Sew Sew Studio. Nic’s a great seamstress and it’s THE place to have your alterations done. You can buy kids’ clothing and even book in for sewing classes. Old Nick's Studio is around the corner. Get a unique tattoo performed by an expert - or simply view the artwork for sale on the walls. Enchanted is an Aladdin’s cave of spiritual materials stuffed with magical gift ideas, incenses, essential

oils, crystals, tarot cards and more. Next door, Alexis is opening a fully equipped professional laser studio for cosmetic work. Laser face lifts, hair and tattoo removals, acne treatment,... Mona’s Handbags is full of beautiful bags crafted by Mona - to order as well, lovely jewelry, scrumptious scarves and wonderful nicknacks. Well worth a browse. The Forge has a fantastic range of genuine 60’s/70’s objects and furniture. My favourites are the lava lamps! Lots to browse and buy, especially if you like to haggle! Gill’s Books is stacked to the rafters with books of every type and age. I’ve seen people spend hours perusing those shelves. Erol’s Café is sooooo friendly and they have a delicious range of things to eat and drink! There’s also Meryem’s Turkish Restaurant, open later in the evening. On to Jallows with a range of hair and beauty products. Treat yourself to a new set of toiletries - or even a wig! At the front is Country Flowers, here for more than twenty years! It looks so

lovely and I always wave to the dog when I’m passing! With Halloween over, the businesses in The Shambles will be raising money for Children In Need with raffles, cake stalls and lots of other fun things. On 28th November, Newent switches on their Christmas lights and The Shambles will be opening late. I’ll bet you’ll find some fabulous presents just by wandering through! Right, it’s about time for my cat nap. Look out for me when you visit, I DO love to be made a fuss of! Hope I see you soon!

MARTIN LEWIS Solar By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert

As summer’s rays have faded, the 550,000 Brits with solar panels will stay smiling. Solar panels aren't just an environmental boon, they cut your electricity bills and pay you for generating energy too. However, the amount you can earn from them will likely soon drop again, so if you’re mulling it, it’s worth deciding whether it’s right for you soon. Let me take you through it…

In June the rate dropped from 13.3p/kWh to 12.9p/kWh (in contrast, you pay 9p-13p/kWh for the electricity you use). Yet once panels are installed, the government has said the rate is fixed for 20 years and rises with inflation, so signing up sooner pays more.

How solar panels work

Does buying solar panels still add up?

"Solar power? Hang on, we don't live in California!" may be your first thought. Yet it’s not about the heat, it’s about daylight, so they still generate some electricity on gloomy days – vital in a country with weather as dull as eating rice cakes while waiting in for a delivery.

Back in the day, solar panels were a no-brainer. When the Government launched the feed-in scheme, people typically got a gobsmacking £1,100+ per year in payments, not taking into account electricity savings. Then again, a typical system cost £12,000.

There are actually two types of panels: thermal which just heat the water, and photovoltaic (PV) which generate electricity, and it’s these that all the fuss is about, though you’ll usually need a reasonable sized, unshaded roof, facing south-ish.

Yet now while you earn less, it also costs far less with the price coming down to £5,000-£8,000. For a full detailed analysis and more help, go to www.mse.me/solar, but in a flash...

How solar panels make you money

Here’s some maths based on a typical house in Manchester with a typical 4kWp system:

Financially, there are two reasons to do this: ● You save on electricity bills. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates a typical family can knock around £100/year off their bills, as it cuts the amount of electricity you need to buy. This depends on system size, location, whether you're at home during the day and other factors. ● You get paid for generating. You also get paid a ‘feed-in tariff’ for ALL the energy you generate. Crucially, that’s even if you’re the one using the energy, which once big home storage batteries become commonplace will be even better. The amount you get depends on your system's size, but EST estimates typical payments of £500 a year (tax-free).

- Cost of panels: £6,500 - Annual generation payment: £515 - Annual bill savings: £120 - Total: £635 - Break even estimate: 10 years - Profit at 20 years: £6,200. So with savings rates so low, for someone with a bundle of cash these are a good option to look at. And for some they can pay back even sooner. The key need-to-knows To see whether solar panels are worth it for you and whether you can get them, there are some important need-to-knows: - You need a south-facing roof: Panels need to be on a south-ish facing roof, which isn’t usually shaded.

Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

Page 11

- You need a grade D Energy Performance Certificate (EPC): An EPC rates a building on its energy efficiency from A - highly efficient - to G. If you haven’t got grade D or above you get a lower feed-in tariff making it not worth it for most. Go to www.gov.uk/find-an-energyassessor to find an accredited assessor. - You can still switch supplier: Don’t think this locks you into your energy provider. Your energy supplier doesn’t need to be the same supplier as the one that pays your feed-in tariff, so you’re free to switch. And with many people already overpaying by £250 a year that’s definitely worth doing – do a full comparison via my www.cheapenergyclub.co.uk or any Ofgem.gov.uk confidence code site. - The further south you live, the more you can make: The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could earn £720/year in London, £635 in Manchester and £595 in Edinburgh – as the south gets more daylight. To predict the likely return for your home use the calculator at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/solar. - Planning permission isn’t usually needed: The big exception is if you’ve a flat roof, your property’s listed or it’s in a conservation area – you may need to get approval from your council’s building team so check with your local authority. - Ensure your fitter’s a member of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme. You can check at www.microgenerationcertification.org. Aren’t they an eyesore? Will it impact the value of my house? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people worry that ugly panels plastered all over their roof and the fact that you’re tied in to a contract that remains with the property once you’ve left could push the price of their house down or put off buyers.

Don’t some firms advertise free solar panels? Some companies offer to fit panels free – but do that and they keep the bigger feed-in tariff payments. You just get the £100ish electricity savings, though prices are predicted to rise massively over 20 years. The firms also maintain the panels and pay for insurance. Yet you may not be able to buy out your contract, so bear this in mind – especially if you’re likely to move house – as this could be very unattractive to a future purchaser. I’ve full reviews of the free solar providers at www.mse.me/freesolar. New tool to trick Amazon into giving you free delivery The giant e-retailer used to give free delivery on its goods (not its third party Marketplace sellers) if you spent £10, but in May it increased that to £20. Delivery costs anything from £1.50 to £6, but a new tool (developed by a very clever chap called Adam who used to work for me), SuperSaverDelivery.co.uk scours Amazon for filler items. For example, a £19.72 hairdryer comes with a £6.01 delivery charge so £25.74 total. But the tool shows how you can add a 33p Snickers bar so you’d only pay £20.05. Turn your smartphone into a free holiday sat-nav If it’s got GPS, you can convert it into a free sat-nav for 28 countries without using any pricey data overseas. Just download the maps before you go – Navmii.com is a free app for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone. Once you’ve downloaded it to your phone, it doesn’t need any internet data to find routes, search, or access its maps via GPS, as these are stored offline in your phone.

And the aesthetics are worth considering, though there are ways to fit panels more discretely. Equally, a more efficient home generating its own energy and paying a feed-in tariff could attract buyers. If you may one day sell the property, I wouldn’t let it put you off. If you’re selling soon, it’s unlikely to be worth doing as you won’t have time to recoup the amount you shell out and it’s unlikely to add a similar amount to your house value. Page 12

Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over Page 16

chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which

bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

And Another Thing... Tom and the Pink Cowboy Hat by Tom Hughes

The squeal from the hallway went through me like fingernails down a blackboard. “Tom! They’re here!” My Dearly Beloved appeared waving an envelope. With trepidation, I lowered my copy of Ford Mondeo Monthly. “Look Tom! Our Robbie tickets!” Horrendous images flashed through my mind - a football stadium filled with pink cowboy hats, a million empty plastic wine bottles and endless traffic jams on the way home. “But what about my tinnitus? You know I can’t stand loud noises. It’s all that high pitched wailing and out of tune singing.” “Well, you know what a Robbie crowd is like.” “I wasn’t talking about the crowd...” “For goodness sake Tom, stop being an old fuddy duddy! And we’ve got priority tickets, so if we get in early enough we’ll be right at the front!” Amazingly, the thought of standing on a penalty spot for five hours in the drizzling rain wasn’t really doing it for me.

So, after parking the Mondeo Ghia X a handy four miles from the ground, we began our pilgrimage - past fat men with mullets selling fake T-shirts, the pungent smell of greasy burgers and the wizened touts yelling “Any spare tickets?”. Eventually we made it to turnstile B, where the stewards held us behind a line until...three, two, one, go! - we sprinted across the pitch towards the front of the stage. I looked across at a fellow husband who was clearly thinking the same thing as me. And Tom Hughes sprints the length of the pitch - and he scores! There the exhilaration ended as we parked up at the front and, surrounded by thousands of fans, stared at an empty black stage for three hours. Vague memories of my schoolboy panic attacks filtered through my mind. I was trapped! I was just in the middle of trying not to think about fighting my way to the gents when three ladies wearing matching blinged-up T-shirts took turns to barge into me. One of the trio tried to focus her eyes onto my face.

“Wha’sem yellow things in your ears?” “Pardon? Oh these ear plugs? It’s quite simple madam, I can’t stand Robbie Williams.” I watched as the woman took another slug of warm Chardonnay and tried to work out why anyone would stand in a cold stadium for five hours to see someone they hated. Then, at last, the lights dimmed, the decibels increased and Mr Williams bounded onto the stage. I pushed my earplugs in as far as they would go. Then, something weird happened. I stared to tap my feet. An hour and a half and a bottle of Blossom Hill later I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me sir, but can you remove your pink cowboy hat? I can’t see the stage?” Taking hold of my hand, my Dearly Beloved yelled into my ear, “Tom Hughes? Tell me that’s not a tear in your eye?” “Sarah, don’t be so silly!”

And through it all, she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection.... Follow Tom on Twitter @groomsdaybook

Computer Corner by Emily Trenwith Windows 10 Troubleshooting Lots of people have now upgraded to Windows 10 - but for some this has caused problems. Here are some solutions for a few of the most common ones: 1. Printer /Scanner/Other hardware not working I’ve had quite a few calls about printers and other hardware items not working properly - this is usually due to a driver problem. Windows 10 will automatically assign a driver to your device, but if it doesn’t work after upgrading, go to the device manufacturer’s website and download the Windows 8.1 driver - this seems to work in many cases. 2. Cortana or Windows Store not working Cortana is the new digital assistant, much like Siri on an iPhone. Problems with Cortana or downloading apps from the Windows store seem to be mostly due to region or language issues make sure that your region is set to the UK in the Control Panel, and that your language is set to English (UK). 3. Where are my bookmarks? With Windows 10, Microsoft have released a new browser called Microsoft Edge that replaces Internet Explorer - and the consensus in the tech industry is that it’s much better than IE! But it won’t have your bookmarks - to find these, open Edge and click on the Favourites button on the top right, which looks like three horizontal lines. You will then see an option called Import Favourites, and you can choose to import your bookmarks from Internet Explorer and/or Chrome. 4. I can’t get Windows 10 at all! This may be due to the age of your PC. Windows 10 has certain minimum requirements to run: A processor of 1 gigahertz (gHZ) or faster 1 or 2 gigabytes (GB) RAM depending on whether you have a 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows 16 GB of free hard disk space Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver A Microsoft account and Internet access Anything less than these and you will have to keep the version of Windows that you have I’m afraid - or buy a new computer! If you get stuck with these issues, or anything else IT related, please contact us on newent@gmt-solutions.co.uk or call on the number below for a free chat.

With bespoke you can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint (if you’re having a painted kitchen, you could match the shade to, say, your favourite mug). You can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like, or even go so far as to have special matching sockets fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you will end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’

Working with a designer Before contacting a bespoke kitchen company, it’s wise to start considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could simply be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it

will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be handbuilt and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

Cards for Good Causes now in Newent The inspiration for Cards for Good Causes came in 1959 when a group of medical charities gathered together to discuss the coordination of publicity for selling charity Christmas cards. They formed the 59 Group of Charities, which is now a multi-charity membership organisation.

New landlords successfully introduce food at awardwining country pub

People can find the shop by looking out for the distinctive triangular red Card for Good Causes Santa on Broad Street. The shop is open between 10am and 4pm Tuesday to Friday and between 10am and 1pm on Saturdays.

Food is being served Tuesday to Saturday, lunchtimes and evenings. For more information please visit the website at www.almainnlinton.co.uk.

Dan and Gemma Evans have started serving home cooked food, using the best locally sourced produce, at this wet-led bastion of a pub. The couple’s ambition for this gem of a country pub has always been to build on the success of previous landlords Graham and Lin Webb by offering customers not only a selection of great ales but also excellent, home cooked pub fare using the best of local ingredients. The couple have been working with their new local chef Richard Hoskins to develop a menu including classic pub food (fish & chips being the most popular dish so far) and seasonal specials including May Hill lamb and pigeon. Continuing with the local theme, they have also given the pub a fresh look using artwork and wallpaper from local artists. Linton villagers and regular customers have welcomed the changes and helped to make the first few weeks a great success. Page 34

Movember: Because Men’s Health Matters

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

MOVEMBER.COM changing the face of mens health

Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is MoveMber? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus on Men’s health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely

to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’. the MoveMber Foundation’s advice For Men Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or

Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress. stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health. drink alcohol only in moderation Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates. To find out more, visit https:// uk.movember.com/ Page 43

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

The only known photograph of the death sentence being passed in an English court.

On 13th August 1964, Gwynne Owen and Peter Allen were hanged for the robbery and murder of a van driver. Owen was a mentally unstable drifter, Allen a feckless petty criminal. The murder was out of character, and most observers were surprised when they weren’t reprieved. But their case wasn’t all that unusual, and didn’t attract any more than the usual amount of media attention. There was, though, one extraordinary thing about Owen and Allen: they were the last people in Britain to be executed. On 8th November 1965 a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Labour backbencher Sidney Silverman received the royal assent, and hanging was abolished. This didn’t come out of the blue. Capital punishment had become extremely unpopular and its abolition was mostly welcomed by the public. Three high-profile miscarriages of justice – or perceived miscarriages of justice – had gone some way towards discrediting the idea and, to undermine it further, the public had lost confidence in the way the Home Office decided who should live and who should die. The first of the three cases was a straightforward wrongful conviction. In March 1950 Timothy Evans was hanged for the murder of his daughter Page 46

Geraldine; it subsequently emerged that both she and her mother Beryl were actually victims of John Christie, who murdered eight women in his west London house of horrors – 10 Rillington Place – between 1943 and 1953. The other two cases were more controversial. Derek Bentley was hanged in January 1953 for the murder of a policeman during a burglary. The actual shooter, Christopher Craig, was a minor and got life. Bentley was 19 and got death. Then in July 1955 28-year-old Ruth Ellis was hanged for shooting dead her violent boyfriend outside a Hampstead pub. He had beaten and deserted her, and she was in a hysterical and desperate state when she finally snapped. Both were guilty. But both had the public’s sympathy, and people expected them to be reprieved as nearly half of all convicted murderers were. And when no reprieves came, what really infuriated public opinion was that the decisions had been taken behind closed doors by Home Office officials on legal considerations alone without regard to public feeling. The outcry was such that the number of death sentences actually carried out thereafter fell to a trickle: in 1964 Owen and Allen were the rope’s only victims. Harold Wilson, Prime Minister

from October 1964, had long been a campaigner against hanging and supported Silverman to the hilt. The bill was intended to last five years – as, indeed, had two previous identical bills introduced by Silverman – and it wasn’t until December 1969 that it was made permanent and the hangman’s rope was finally put away forever. As many had predicted, abolition was followed by a steep climb in the murder rate, clearly proving that hanging had the deterrent effect its supporters claimed for it. But then the murder rate flattened out, then it soared again, then after peaking at over 1,000 in 2002 it halved in 10 years. Hard to say anything definitive about deterrence from a rollercoaster like that! What we have learned, though, is that the number of wrongful convictions such as those of the Birmingham Six is frighteningly high: one can’t help wondering just how many of those hanged before 8th November 1965 had done nothing wrong? There are, of course, some who maintain that the deterrent effect of hanging is so important that it really doesn’t matter that, inevitably, a few innocents will be killed; they might reconsider, perhaps, if they found themselves in Timothy Evans’s place!

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

The Success Destroyer Most of my working life is spent helping people to be happy and successful. My work is primarily in the corporate, private and public sectors, from the individual to the multi-national. I state this not as an ego trip, but as a firm foundation for you, my reader, to understand and take on board the magnitude of this message. There is not a successful or happy person in the world who consciously or subconsciously is not aware of the ruthless power of the success destroyer. It is a foul disease caught easily, highly infectious and can be difficult to eradicate once established. This foul destroyer is negativity, in all its various guises. This manifests itself with negative thinking, negative self-talk, negative communication, negative body language and a thirst for bad news coupled with enjoyment from other's misfortunes. Some sufferers spend an inordinate part of their life criticising, condemning and complaining. It is really very easy to find fault, but requires a bit of effort and imagination to find a better way. Very little criticism is constructive, mostly it is destructive. We all thrive on a little constructive criticism, but this can be “Oh so rare and caring”.

The world we live in is challenging though wonderful. Unfortunately, the balance is going wrong with so much news delivered to us 24 hours a day, and by its very nature news is normally bad. My brother Robin used to say “no news is good news”. Of course news and awareness of some of the horrors of the world can help to alleviate it or encourage action. The balance goes wrong however when there is little or no news, so it becomes sensationalised or contorted and exaggerated so everything becomes a disaster or crisis and we then become desensitised. So do make an effort to bring the pendulum back into balance. Be aware of the evil power of the negative and start by leading a life that is more positive and only allow the negative to play a small part of your life’s journey. So a few tips to get started: 1. The drink in the pub becomes half full, not half empty 2. Tomorrow will be partly sunny, not partly cloudy 3. When asked how you are, never again say “not too bad, thank you”. How about “I’m feeling ok”, “I’m feeling fine” or “I’m feeling good, thank you”. When we say “not too bad, thank you” we are implying either that we are normally bad, or we are surprised that we are not bad. 1st Newent Scout Group raises money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind For nearly a year, the 1st Newent Scout Group have been diligently collecting milk bottle caps to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind. The children, aged between five and fifteen, have collected thousands of caps – enough to fill two large black sacks – with the help of the people of Newent. The bottle caps are ground down to be recycled into plastic toys, and the money raised goes towards the training of Guide Dog Puppies. Last month, the sacks were handed over to Beryl Hope and her Trainee Guide Dog, Laurie, who told us what it was like to train Guide Puppies and what will happen to the caps next. The children and leaders would like to thank everyone who contributed to our Appeal, and plan to carry on well into 2016. - by Ann Bryant, 1st Newent Scout Group Page 52

Pool Hill, Newent, GL18 1LL admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk www.pauntleyschool.com

All of the school’s 38 pupils, parents, ex-pupils, staff and governors came together in a celebration assembly to surprise their infant’s teacher with speeches and a series of gifts. Amazingly she was unaware till the assembly started, as even the reception children she teaches managed to keep it a secret. There were flowers, a special Pauntley cake made by one of the dads, cards and gifts. Mrs Tyler was overwhelmed by the kindness of her pupils and their parents. In a letter to thank the school she said: “Your thoughtfulness demonstrates what an incredible and unique place our little school is – a true family where we all care and work together.” Chairman of the Friends of Pauntley, Vanessa Roxburgh, said: “We wanted to thank Branwen for all her hard work at school, even in the holidays she can be found tending the school garden and organising her classroom. She has been a staunch supporter of all the fundraising The Friends do. She has seen the school change and expand, only a decade ago they were having to teach in portacabins with outside toilets. We hope she will still be here to celebrate the school’s 150 year

anniversary in 2021. My own son has benefited so much from her teaching and he has a real enthusiasm for learning and reading in particular – she is Pauntley’s special asset” Just five minutes drive out of Newent town, towards Ledbury, Pauntley is a small village school tucked away in a beautiful rural setting surrounded by rolling fields and views to the Malvern Hills and May Hill, after which the two classes are named. With just 38 pupils on the roll, Pauntley has multi-age classes that value children as individuals, offering personalised learning and a family atmosphere that welcomes children in and helps them to grow. Pauntley offers an early risers club from Monday to Friday from 8am and after school clubs until 4.30 in sport, wildlife and craft activities. And there is a monthly “stay and play” session for pre-schoolers and toddlers. Pauntley are holding an open day on Wednesday 4 November 2015 between 9.30am - 11.30am. Members of the local community and future parents are all invited to visit. Places are available for children aged 4 - 11 years. Or you can contact Head teacher, Mr Chris Ward, at Pauntley School office on 01531 820053. admin@pauntley.gloucs.sch.uk www.pauntleyschool.com

Peugeot helps get Teenagers behind the wheel Peugeot has made it easier for teenagers in Gloucestershire to get behind the wheel by making its unique ‘Just Add Fuel®’ scheme available to 18-20 year olds for the very first time from local Dealerships, Warners’ of Gloucester and Warners’ of Tewkesbury. From September, young drivers will be able to benefit from the Peugeot Just Add Fuel® initiative on the Peugeot 108, due to a clever advanced telematics device which attaches to the on-board diagnostic port and tracks driver behaviour. Previously only available to drivers aged 21 or older, Peugeot has made strides in the motor industry by making the inclusive package available for young drivers on the Peugeot 108. Since its launch over five years ago, more than 27,000 people have taken advantage of Peugeot’s Just Add Fuel®. The innovative, fixed-cost motoring package ensures a single monthly payment which allows customers to leave the

showroom with three years’ insurance, servicing, road tax, warranty and roadside assistance for their vehicle. High on style, space and practicality, the Peugeot 108 is packed with a range of easy-to-use technology to improve life on the road. Offering an abundance of choice, drivers can choose from eight paint finishes, four interior ambiences and seven stylish themes on the 108. Marc Warner, Dealer Principal said: “Over the last five years, the Just Add Fuel® scheme has been recognised as a significant innovation in vehicle retailing and this has now been extended to help get first time drivers on the road in Gloucestershire. The Peugeot 108 is priced from just £248 rental per month and no initial payment is required. The monthly payments can be improved depending on variables like the amount of deposit paid, location, etc.

Just Add Fuel® with telematics is also available to Peugeot 108 buyers aged 21-75 who do not have two years’ no claims discount, or have held a full UK driver’s license for less than two years. Despite being part of the new car retailing landscape for five years, Just Add Fuel® remains unique to Peugeot and its customers. Looking for Livery? Fairfields Stables is a family run business that we started in April 2002 to offer livery to people who may not have time to look after their own horses. We offer full daily care or the option for you to do it yourself, DIY Livery, for £37.50 per week. We offer large rubber matted and airy stables in either an American barn or a tradtional loose box, suited to the individual horse. We have all year round turnout in 76 acres of free draining sandy soil. But most important we have fantastic facilities for exercising your horse, whether it is schooling for dressage, show jump training or tackling x-country obstacles, two arenas, with mirrors to watch your progress, a full course of show jumps and a 200m canter track. We don’t offer riding lessons, but people will take part in lessons here on their own horses with visiting trainers. Many of our clients enjoy hacking, some competing, whilst others enjoy looking after their horse and spending time in the countryside. At this time of year the yard always becomes busier as many horses are brought into the stables at night as the weather turns colder and the daily task of mucking out begins. It is a good time to check that your horse’s annual flu and tetanus vaccinations are up to date, have their teeth checked and make sure they have a worm count to test for encysted worms; that can give rise to poor health and colic. At Fairfields we have a worming programme, we send the horse’s dung off for testing every 8 – 10 weeks and only worm if necessary, but as winter approaches we give an annual wormer against tapeworm and bots after the first frosts.

As the horses grow their hairy winter coats many owners will have them clipped, so that when they sweat, when they are excercised they will dry off quicker, this means rugging them up to replace that lost coat to keep them warm and clean! The latest rugs are breathable and made of advanced fabrics, but they do benefit from an annual wash, so make sure they are cleaned and returned well before you need to use them. It’s also a good time to check the fit and safety of saddles and bridles, check the stitching and particulary the wear on stirrup leathers. And many horses benefit from a tune up from a physio or animal therapist. Finally, check you have enough bedding to last you if your horse is stabled. Many stores offer discounts now for bulk deliveries and make sure you have ordered hay or haylage in, so you don’t run out if we have bad weather. Feeding advice can be obtained from all the main manufacturers and we even have had the big companies come out to weigh our horses and offer special dietary advice. Some horses will benefit from being fed an extra vitamin and mineral supplement or feed balancer when grass is short, especially if they are a good doer and don’t need a lot of seperate hard feed. Winter need not be a burden if you are prepared! Happy Hacking! - by Vanessa Roxburgh, Fairfields Stables

What are the Signs of Dental Problems in Your Rabbit? It’s not necessarily tooth decay that causes dental problems in a rabbit. Teeth that grow at a rate of 2mm per week, combined with the wrong type of diet, are more likely to be at fault. Rabbits’ teeth should be ground down by their food, and if this doesn’t happen they can develop overgrown molars or spurs of enamel that cut into the soft tissue in their mouth. Foods rich in fibre that also wear down the teeth, such as hay and dark green leafy vegetables, will stop incisors becoming too long. To help you spot the telltale signs of trouble, and deal effectively with your rabbit’s dental health, here are some of the signs to look out for.

Lack of grooming Rabbits naturally groom themselves, and if yours has stopped grooming it can lead to a range of other problems including fly strike, a potentially fatal disease. Rabbits use their teeth during the grooming process, so lack of cleanliness on their part could mean that their teeth are sore. Loss of weight It may be painful for them to eat, resulting in a rapid loss of weight. The abrasive nature of hay in particular could be causing them pain. Drooling If your rabbit has started to drool, it might be due to dental problems. Also look out for wetness on their front paws. Your vet should be able to smooth any enamel spurs, and keeping an eye on your rabbit’s general behaviour can also help to pinpoint problems. http://www. rabbitawarenessweek. co.uk/health/dental/ By Ann Haldon

Helping your pets stay calm & safe during firework season Many pets become anxious and frightened when fireworks are going off. Some become extremely distressed and unlike us, they do not understand why there are loud bangs and flashes outside. The signs that your pet is fearful, may include:

• Trembling or shaking • Clinging to owners • Barking excessively • Cowering and hiding behind furniture

• Trying to run away • Soiling the house • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat The most caring thing for us to do as owners is to comfort and reassure our pets when they are demonstrating fearful behaviours, however, sadly in this situation it can make the problem worse. The best thing we can do to help our pets is to be prepared in advance.

There are a number of ways, that we can help to ease the stress levels, including: • Provide a covered den for your pet to hide away in • Keep doors, windows and cat flaps closed after dusk • Take your dog for a walk well before fireworks are likely to begin • Have the curtains drawn and lights on - this will help to mask the flashes • Have the television or radio on slightly louder than normal - this will help to block out the bangs There are numerous chemical methods of improving your dog’s or cat’s stress levels during the firework season. In dogs we use plug in diffusers called Adaptil or Adaptil collars, which need to be applied at least a few days before the firework season. In cats a very effective pheromone de-stress aid is Feliway diffuser which is also a plug in.

We also have numerous calming agents such as: Zylkene and Calmex which are very beneficial if used in plenty of time, but in severe cases some sedation may be indicated but this is usually a last resort. Please be aware of horses also during the season, and if you are having a firework party please inform your neighbours if they have horses, so that they can be shut in. We are frequently called to horses which have sustained injuries after firework parties, so please be responsible if you are doing so. Please remember micro chipping of all dogs is a legal requirement from 2016. We will provide a 20% discount on micro chips until 2015.

If you like any advice please contact us on: 01531 632276.

Newent Town AFC in the Reg Davis Cup Final!

At 7.30pm on Wednesday 30th September the Cup Final of the Reg Davis Trophy was played at Slimbridge FC (Stonehouse Town 1st vs Newent Town 1st). For the first time in their 95 year history Newent played in the final against a very strong Stonehouse team who is currently

sat on top of the Northern Senior league. It was no real surprise when Stonehouse raced into a 2-0 lead after just 15 minutes but back came Newent dominating the next half hour without actually scoring. In the 2nd half Newent scored on the hour and amazingly equalised near the end, taking it into extra time at 2-2.

Unfortunately, Newent had a player sent off and had to play the extra half hour with only 10 players. But with just 3 minutes left and people in the crowd talking about a penalty shoot out, Newent scored the winner, sending their players and supporters into wild celebrations and leaving Stonehouse absolutely stunned.

Variety show returns to Mitcheldean After last year's successful charity show which raised over £1,200 for muscular dystrophy and cancer charities, many people asked for more of the same, so we are delighted to announce that the Variety Show returns to the Forest on Saturday 7th November at Xerox Club Mitcheldean. The fabulous line up includes hilarious comedy impressions from TV comic Jimmy Riddle, classy vocals from local favourite Jess Burton, stage and table magic from Mr Gruff, 'Shadows' hits from Newent’s ‘The Saddows’ (don’t let the name fool you, these boys are good!) and dancing to the Forest's own Emrys Cox. To top it all off we have a guest spot from local legend Dick Brice! There will also be a prize draw. The evening kicks off at 7.30pm and you will be able to enjoy 6 brilliant acts for just £10! All proceeds will go to the Forest of Dean Muscular Dystrophy UK Group. For tickets call Martin on 07796 585255 or email Martinwhitehouse586@btinternet.com Page 62

Finance Boost Your Income in Time for Christmas By Ann Haldon

With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. Use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. Generate extra cash on eBay and Amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget. Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that Page 66

you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. Use the popularity of local Facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon. Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve

carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter. Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand. You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round. These are just a few ideas for boosting your income – try picking one or two and you might find that you’ve got some money to spare in January. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/family/make-money

25 Years Unbelievable Ohhhhhhh! “The things you say, your purple prose just gives you away. The things you say you're unbelievable!”

In 2007 the remaining four band members reformed and played several festivals, while guitarist Ian Dench continued writing songs for other artists such as Beyoncé and Shakira. More recently, EMF played further festivals and performed their debut album ‘Schubert Dip’ from start to finish. To say I’m honoured that I gave EMF their very first airplay is an understatement, it was worth every written warning I received for doing it! Fast forward 25 years, and the song is still going strong. Do I feel old because this was 25 years ago? No, I don’t, I just feel proud for helping put EMF and the Forest of Dean on the worldwide music map! - by Gregg Upwards

There are just one or two songs a year that when heard for the first time (or in my case played live on the radio) make you think: “Awesome, this will still be played in years to come!”

LOCAL FREELANCE Crystal Flame Photography PHOTOGRAPHER

When EMF first formed in Cinderford in 1989, they called me to see if I would play their song on the radio. I was working at Severn Sound at the time and some of the boys' mums came to the station to hand me copies of the song, reassuring me that I would love it. So I played it and what can I say - I loved it, and so did Gloucestershire! Unfortunately, my bosses didn’t. I soon received a written complaint for interviewing the band and for playing a song that wasn’t on the playlist.

PORTRAITS

Weeks later the song became number 3 on the UK Charts and spread to Europe, New Zealand and Australia. In 1991 it made number 1 on the US Top 100’s. A few years later the band teamed up with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer and reached another number 3 in the UK Single Charts with a cover of the Monkey’s hit ‘I’m a Believer’. Shortly after, the band split before they reunited in 2001 to tour and write new material, but they were shocked to silence by the tragic death of their bassist Zac in 2002.

Club meetings take place on Tuesday evenings in the upstairs room of The Red Lion, meet 6.45pm for 7pm dinner. The Club has a variety of activities together with the occasional speaker from all walks of life. Detailed below are examples of what Rotary is all about, with our motto being ‘Service above Self’ within the community. Father Christmas street visits: Again this year, Father Christmas together with his friends from Rotary will be visiting the streets in both Newent and Highnam. Father Christmas is looking forward to meeting all the children, whilst Rotary Club members will be ‘door to door’ collecting for local charities. Newent on Wed 16 & Thu 17, & Highnam Mon 21 & Tues 22 December from 5pm each evening. Newent Christmas Lights Switch On: The Club will be entering a float in the procession and also bucket collecting around the ‘Christmas Tree of Light’ in the Market Square for the Youth Section of Newent Rugby Club. Rotary charities will benefit from the kind and generous support of Highnam Players Drama Group who are ’bucket collecting’ at their performances of ‘Ladies Day,’ from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 November in Page 76

Newent Community School: During December the Club will be holding its Public Speaking and Cake Making competitions for students from the school. In addition the Club hopes the school will be able to provide a choir/musical performance at the Rotary Evening in Gloucester Cathedral in March 2016, where only six schools will be performing. Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA): In September the Club were delighted to have a presentation from our 2015 student, Emily Arkell, who attended the one week residential course in the Forest of Dean in August. If you are a local student (15-18) and would like to apply for the 2016 course please contact our secretary below. The course objective is to improve confidence in leadership, teambuilding and presentation skills, within an ‘Outward Bound’ type of environment.

Nepal: Recently Club members attended a presentation by Kesh, a former Ghurkha, who now owns the White Hart at Maisemore. He is fundraising for those back home in Nepal many of whom have suffered from the recent earthquake crisis.

Rotary Charities: The Club would like to thank those people who have supported our many charity events over the last twelve months. In addition to those charities mention above the Club will be donating approx £6000 to our three main causes, Kisumu School (Kenya), Maggie’s Cancer Charity and our own Sheppard House in Newent.
