come to the l e W September 2014 edition of Newent Magazine Many weeks of daytrips, picnics and baking cakes are now behind me as the Summer holidays have come to an end. You can always tell that it's back to school time in our house by the frantic buying of new school uniforms, PE kit, pens, pencils and erasers in the last week of holidays. Best of luck to all the students in Newent and surrounds as you start your new school year! I mentioned in last month's issue that we will be increasing our page count due to the rise in advertisers and also the amazing response from you for our community pages. If you are at an event, send your pictures and selfies to us and you could be featured in the magazine or on our Facebook page.

Dymock hold annual PULL The village of Dymock held their annual 'PULL' last month. This event is an annual tug 'o war contest event held on the village green to see which team can win the Dave Lansett Memorial Trophy and teams from around the area compete, including some of the rugby and football teams. This event has been held annually in Dymock for the last 12 years. It was set up many years ago when the local pub, The Beauchamp Arms, was purchased by the village "Friends of Beauchamp Arms" through the Parish Council. It was the first such purchase in the country.
When an event was required to celebrate this, the Tug 'o War challenge was created, to be held annually, with the Dave Lansett Memorial Trophy to be awarded each year to the winners. This year the two finalists were teams from the Beauchamp Arms itself so the trophy will remain in Dymock for another year. Organiser Linda Griffin said, "Whilst Dymock is not a very large village there is always something going on," and tug 'o war referee Ade Challonder commented "These events are all about the village and
its community, you can see by the numbers attending just how popular this is. There is a wonderful community spirit here." This event is one of a number held in the village throughout the year, the next being the free Proms Picnic on the Green on the 6th September at 7.00pm. Dymock also holds an annual May Music Festival, a Strawberry Fair and an annual Half Marathon amongst other events. - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

60'S ERA
MUSIC FESTIVAL & JO MEEK CELEBRATION This year's Festival and Celebration will take place on the 10th - 11th October 2014. Page 10
On Friday 10th October the 60's group,
The Honeycombs will be playing a free evening of musical entertainment at the George Hotel in Newent. The Honeycombs were the first group to have a female drummer and are credited with inspiring the late Karen Carpenter (from The Carpenters) to take up drumming. On Saturday the 11th October the dynamic Cinderford group, Them Two, will be back by popular demand. They will be performing their wonderful covers of popular 60's songs under the Market House in Newent, from 10.30am through to 3.30pm. There will also be a display of classic cars and motorcycles to enhance the mood of the 60's. To further enhance the 60's mood on Saturday there will be, at the Memorial Hall Newent, an exhibition of Jo Meek equipment and memorabilia from his niece's personal collection from 10.30am to 3.30pm. In the same hall, a video biography and talk on "The Life and Times of Jo Meek" will be given between 12 noon and 1pm by Rob Bradford, Chairman of the Jo Meek Society. Later on Saturday, at Newent Community School, the 1960's Concert and Dance will take place from 7pm to 11pm.

This concert and dance features The Disciples as support group, also back by popular demand after an amazing session in last years concert. This group is a truly professional band that have been appearing around the West Midlands for more than 20 years. During this time they have established themselves as one of the top live bands in the West Midlands and have a great following. The headline act is a group called The Rapiers. This group is widely considered to be the best 60's band since the 60's. They present a stunning, authentic performance of 60's Pop and Rock in a fully choreographed show.
The Rapiers will create an era of frothy coffee bars, sharp cut suits and juke boxes pouring out hits from The Shadows, Billy Fury and Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, and many more. They spent 4 years appearing with Freddie Garrity recreating the original Freddy and the Dreamers stage show and have appeared with Sir Paul McCartney and Jeff Beck, having also worked with Jet Harris, Rick Wakeman and with the late George Harrison at the Formula 1 Williams Team evenings.
A concert and dance not to be missed!

Beauty Explained: The Science Behind Skin Care
How many times have you been completely baffled by some scientific sounding jargon when you’ve gone to buy a new antiageing cream? Unless you were top of the class in chemistry, you probably don’t know your AHAs from your Ceramides. So that’s why we’ve compiled our guide to the most common ingredients you’ll come across today. Once you’ve read our skincare glossary you’ll not only understand the terminology, but you’ll be able to find the best cream for your skin’s needs as well. Antioxidants serve to protect skin from those damaging free radicals to which our skin is exposed on a day-to-day basis. Free radicals - or oxidants - are unstable molecules which are caused by environmental factors like smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals are responsible for causing those annoying visible signs of ageing like lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E, Vitamin C and green tea are some of the most common
antioxidants. Vitamin E has great moisturising properties and makes skin soft and smooth, whereas Vitamin C helps to diminish the look of brown age spots and hyper pigmentation, green tea is a strong antioxidant and a staple ingredient in most anti-ageing products. Hyaluronic acid, when applied topically, gives the skin a fresh, smooth look and helps it to maintain moisture - which is vital for youthful looking skin. It’s a naturally occurring carbohydrate in the body, but levels diminish with age, especially after you reach 40. Ceramides help in the fight for youthful looking skin thanks to their ability to prevent water loss and promote skin-cell renewal. They’re commonly used in moisturisers as they effectively re-hydrate dry skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are naturally occurring acids, commonly found in citrus fruits (citric acid), dairy products (lactic acid) and sugar (glycolic acid). They work to aid the skin’s natural exfoliation process by loosening dead surface cells. When applied in the form of cream to your face, AHAs reduce fine lines and unclog pores. Glycolics work similarly to AHAs - they speed up the process the skin goes through to shed dead outer cells, which in turn reveals new, smoother skin cells Collagen is found naturally in the skin, the protein maintains the skin’s elasticity and keeps it looking plump. Over the years though, the body’s production

of collagen drops dramatically. Used in many anti-ageing creams, collegan is found to be a very effective water-binding ingredient. Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A. They have been found to help to renew the skin and stimulate collagen production, minimise the appearance of wrinkles and bolster the skin’s thickness and elasticity; which makes them a popular ingredient in anti-ageing creams. Growth factors are used to help to build collagen and diminish lines and wrinkles, whilst softening the skin. Their natural function in the body is to control cell growth in different areas. Soy isoflavones are a type of plant hormone thought to be useful in treating dark spots by blocking the pathway of melanin. They can aid in preventing collagen loss in postmenopausal women as they have an effect on skin that is similar to oestrogen. Copper makes an appearance in some anti-ageing products as it is thought to promote the production of collagen and elastin - two of the most important factors in younger looking skin. Hydroquinone is useful in suppressing pigment producing enzymes in the skin, thus fighting age spots. It’s therefore, often recommended by experts to lighten those dark spots on the skin.

Tea Party for Help for Heroes Local town Councillor Len Lawton held a tea Party last month to raise funds for the Help for Heroes Fund by treating visitors to a wonderful spread of tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits.
Len commented " I have a son in the Royal Navy and others attending are in similar position, so we have a good reason to do this. When we saw what happened to Lee Rigby last year we felt we had to act and show Newent supports Help for Heroes."
This is the second year Len has done this having successfully raised in excess of ÂŁ240 last year.

Many guests attended on a nice afternoon to show support and these included Councillor John Celino and his wife Pearl. John is the Chairman of the Newent branch of the Royal British Legion and commented "Events such as this help a great deal. Help for Heroes supplies the capital from such donations and The Legion provides the staff."

Char & Andy's Farm expands within months of opening Char & Andy's Farm Shop in the Shambles Retail Village in Newent has had to expand due to its phenomenal success since it was opened in April this year. Opened up in April due to local pressure for their local meat, vegetable and fruit produce, the Farm Shop found that the footfall quickly became too great for the original unit. Charlotte says "We felt when we set up the shop in April it would work but we could not have anticipated the the number of customers that would come to the shop.We will be maintaining our local produce and the GlutenFree products however as a result of having requests for exotic meats like crocodile, buffalo and ostrich we will be expanding our produce range further". Char & Andy's Shop is part of the rapidly expanding Shambles Retail Village in Newent that now currently houses as many as 8 businesses, namely : BabyShambles for baby clothes, Mona's Bags for Handmade bags, Booty Shop for hand made wood products, Bling Box for costume jewellery, the Courtyard Cafe, Errols Takeaway, Crystal Flame Photography for portraits, etc, and Nick's Tattoo's.

Newent Town Team Statement of Intent A successful Newent Town Team Meeting was held at the Memorial Hall on 19th August, where presentations were received from Bob Watters, Chair of the Local Action Group and Bruce Fowler and Martin Draper from the Newent Initiative Trust (NiT). During the meeting, the focus was on how a town team/partnership for Newent might be structured. A lot of work has already gone into discussing visions for a Newent Town team, this must now be turned into a reality - a statement of intent! If you agree in principle to the following, which we hope will help to build the goodwill and trust a team will need then JOIN US! The Newent Town Team will: ü be inclusive and open to all individuals, groups, organisations and authorities ü agree Terms of Reference to set out arrangements for protocols and how the team will be governed ü agree an overarching vision ü discuss and agree an action plan with responsibilities ü have clear procedures for meetings, decision taking, managing funds Developing governance of this nature is not only good practise, but will make our team clear, open and transparent. It will also help to clarify roles and relationships. Details of next meeting - all welcome: Date: Tuesday 19th September 2014 Time: Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start Venue: Newent Memorial Hall, Bury Bar Lane, Newent

New Guitar Club The lack of any music clubs around Newent has persuaded local musician, Neil Smith, proprietor of R S Photographics in Newent, to start up a Guitar Club. Neil has been a guitarist for more than 25 years, playing a Fender Strat as a semi pro and has played with various bands over the years. Having tested the water Neil eventually arranged the first meeting in the Memorial Hall on Friday. Said Neil, "This is a great turnout and a wonderful response considering it is the first meeting. We had 12 Neil Smith, people attend club leader with a great mixture of learners and experienced guitarists. it was pleasing to see so many youngsters attending too".
The Guitar Club in session
David Sass, guitarist from The Other Crowd called in and indeed even 8 year old Kai Haines, fresh from his success at the Live @ the Lake gig, came along" Neil added that he hoped that, apart form people learning guitar and jamming together, a further benefit might be that some of the people who attend would possible play together in the future, maybe even forming their own bands.
In a relaxed atmosphere and after 2 hours of gigging and discussion Neil said he was happy that there was enough interest to continue the club and hoped that even more people would join as time goes by. The club will meet at 7.30 every Friday in Newent at a venue to be announced. Anyone who wishes to join can speak to Neil on 01531 822182. - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Planning for Building Work Thinking of getting the builders in? Forward planning is vital. Our expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy advice Ready, Steady, Go?
It may sound obvious, but do you know exactly what work needs doing to your home? Think structure first, then decoration. Are the walls and roof safe and sound? Is the house warm enough in winter? How good is your boiler – have you got hot water whenever you need it? Do your windows stick; do your stairs creak, do your gutters drip or is your plaster crumbling away? Aim to get all the boring but necessary repairs and renovations out of the way – you might want to look
for tradespeople (from builders to carpenters, electricians to plumbers) in the pages of this magazine – before turning your attention to paint colours, floorings and soft furnishings. Then sort out your budget, agree a programme of work and get ready to make a few cups of tea.
Before Work Starts
If you want your project to run as smoothly as possible, make sure you get the following issues sorted in advance: • Hours to be worked • Access to the house (especially if you won’t be living there), and security • Parking • Storage of tools and other equipment
• Who is responsible for clearing the working area in advance, and cleaning up afterwards • Use of a WC, and a sink to clean tools • Disposal of rubbish • Use of power points • Potential aggravation to neighbours (anything from loud building noise to playing a radio)
Rules and Regulations
Before you start any building work – and especially if it’s a major change such as an extension or conversion – find out whether or not you need to obtain planning permission from your local authority. Go to planningportal. gov.uk/permission for lots of
DIY SAFETY
Keep safety first and foremost if you’re doing any building work yourself. Never attempt any work that you are not competent to handle and, if it involves gas or electricity, call in a professional. If necessary, take the time to do a course, read a book or at least watch relevant internet videos. Use the right tool for the job, and ensure it’s in good working order before you start. Make sure you know how to use hire tools properly. Wear appropriate clothing, keep pets and children out of the way, tie long hair back and don’t smoke on the job. Heavy lifting to be done? Get help at the appropriate time. Be especially careful when using a ladder, don’t rush or cut corners, and store tools and equipment safely. Ventilate any areas where there are fumes or a great deal of dust and, last but by no means least, keep a first aid kit handy, just in case. Page 28

information. If you live in a listed building, green belt or a conservation area, you should be especially careful to get the necessary consents – it is a criminal offence to fail to apply for listed building consent when required, for example, so it is always worth checking with your local planning authority. You may also be surprised to find that Building Regulations cover most aspects of work to your home, from the energy efficiency of new windows to electrical installations. It is important that you comply with them, because if you don’t you could be asked to alter or remove the work. You would also have problems when you come to sell
your property. Confirm with your builder that he is taking responsibility for compliance – and get the necessary documentation to prove it once the work is finished. If you are doing the work yourself, talk to the building control department of your local authority. GOING GREEN? Now is the time to decide on any environmentally friendly features that could save you money (and the planet) in the long run. Some eco measures, such as ground source heat pumps and wind turbines, are best suited for new builds or top-to-toe renovations, but others – solar panels and rainwater recycling, for example – are more easily achievable. And don’t overlook the straightforward options, including fitting double or secondary glazing, installing water-saving showerheads and insulating your loft. Even tiny moves such as connecting an energy monitor or switching to energy-saving light bulbs can make a big difference. For more information, go to www. energysavingtrust.org.uk.

Finance Boost Your Income: How to Make Money from Crafting By Ann Haldon www.cornerstonewebcontent.com The growth in popularity of knitting, sewing and jewellerymaking has provided skilled crafters with a golden opportunity to supplement their income. Not only is it possible to make good money from a creative hobby such as this, people young and old are starting successful businesses doing what they love. Many people make gifts for family and friends, but don’t always realise the potential to earn money from their hobby. Diverse influences including media interest, the economic collapse, and TV programmes such as The Great British Sewing Bee have all been instrumental in bringing about the revival of crafts once regarded as old-fashioned. So if you want to use your creativity to make some money, what are the best ways to sell, and how easy is it to get started?
Selling at craft fairs
Craft fairs are considered the ‘traditional’ route to selling handcrafted items. They remain a good option if you can spare several days a month to focus on selling, in addition to the time needed to produce your items. Craft fairs and vintage markets are held regularly throughout the year, but because they are so popular, it is advisable to book well in advance. Some venues provide tables,
equipment and electrical sockets, but in most cases you’ll have to provide your own table and lighting. High quality spotlighting is a good investment for sellers with a long-term plan, and can encourage sales if the venue is dimly lit.
Selling online
Selling online involves a little more planning and considerably more effort to be successful. In its favour it has the advantage of being flexible, and may fit more easily into your life. Not only will you need to produce items to sell, you’ll also need to develop your ‘shop,’ take and upload photos of each item, describe them well, estimate postage and packing charges, and continually market the business. If this is what you envisioned, there’s probably no better way to make money from crafting. Two websites set up to help you succeed in this respect are Folksy and Etsy, both being designed specifically for independent craftspeople and artisans.
Folksy
With more than 15,000 sellers on Folksy, this has become a strong community for crafters and buyers alike. A UK-based site that has been around since 2007, Folksy provides a great opportunity to create your own brand without it costing a

fortune, get your creations in front of a global audience, and build a bona-fide craft business. • Basic account - 15p + VAT per item - Items listed for 120 days - 6% + VAT commission • Folksy Plus - Annual charge of £45, inclusive of VAT - No individual listing fees - 6% + VAT commission
Etsy
If you start selling on Etsy you’ll be joining an established community of over 8 million members and 800,000 online shops. Launched in 2005, Etsy is based in America but also has a loyal following in the UK. It’s possible to link your Etsy account to a Facebook business page for additional exposure in this country. • Seller account - no membership fees - $0.20 to list an item for 4 months - 3.5% commission Lovingly handcrafted items of a high quality have more personality than mass-produced goods, and their unique nature makes them appealing to discerning buyers. Although not a get-rich-quick scheme, making items to sell has the potential to bring in some valuable extra income and provide much-needed job satisfaction. Page 31

Auction Anecdote As the commemoration take place in 2014 I thought it would be topical to discuss the sale of one the highlights from our July Militaria sale. A client from Ross on Wye had wisely decided it was a good time to sell her part set of five character jugs depicting the Allied Leaders of WWI which were produced in a set of eleven from 1915 to 1918.
Monthly Sales of Antiques & Collectables Below: Aquamarine and diamond ring Est £500/£700
The fabulously lifelike and vividly depicted jugs were designed by a famous cartoonist of the day Sir Carruthers Gould and they were produced by Wilkinson’s Ltd - an ‘avant guarde’ but well respected ceramics company who also made Clarice Cliff’s wares in the 1920’s and 30’s. Only one hundred and fifty complete sets of the jugs were made and today there are only a few complete sets that survive intact. Initially only one of the jugs consigned to Smiths was thought to be damaged (this was a nasty and significant repair to the hat of Admiral Jellicoe) but on closer inspection a faint trail of dribbled glue on General Foch was followed and found to lead to small repair to his left hand and champagne bottle. Condition is everything and with only three of the jugs in perfect condition the auctioneers were delighted to sell the set of five for £1800 to a commission bidder on the day. Smiths next Antiques and Collectables sale is on the 5th September and entries are now in invited for the sale on the 3rd October which includes a special section for postcards, stamps and ephemera but also includes a full range of antiques and collectables.

Credit Crunch Gardening by Pippa Greenwood
If you feel that your garden has become an expensive hobby, check-out my top tips for Credit-Crunch Gardening. • Apply for an allotment. An allotment opens up a whole new opportunity to grow almost unlimited food at very little cost, get exercise without paying for the gym, and learn a lot from your neighbouring plot holders. • Gardeners are a very generous bunch, so don’t feel embarrassed to ask, friends, neighbours, or fellow allotmenteers for cuttings or seedlings of plants that you have admired. It is part of what gardening is all about. • Collect softish, deciduous leaves to make free soil improver. Just make a ‘cage’ from galvanised wire with posts at the corners or cram the leaves into bin liners and puncture a few holes. • Make the most of every bit of fruit and veg that your garden or allotment produces. Make jams, chutnies, jellies and of course bottle or freeze just about anything else. • Make your own wasp trap. Use a jam jar part filled with stale jam, mixed with water and topped with tin foil with a few holes in it made using a pencil. • Many local councils offer

really good value composters and compost bins. Better still, if you’re at all handy with the hammer and nails, create your own from old pallets or floor boards. Fill a flowerbed with colour by sowing it with hardy annual seeds – some can be collected from existing plants, others from packet seed, often at under £1 per packet. Ask your local pub to give you any stale beer from the driptrays and use it as slug bait. Use an old plastic beaker part filled with beer and placed so that the rim is about 1cm above soil level in a slug and snail prone area. Enjoy some wild food. Many garden plants are edible, and don’t forget the old favourites such as hedgerow blackberries - great for crumble, stewed with some apple or for making into bramble jelly. Many fruits sold in the supermarket come in smart, clear-plastic trays, which can be used as miniature seed trays, and most even come with a clear plastic top, the perfect mini propagator lid. Growing your own vegetables really can save you a packet. Right now you can order in seed for crops, and onion sets and garlic for crops early

next summer. Then early in the year start planting potatoes and sowing seed. • Look after your garden tools. Store them in a dry shed or garage, wipe over any metal parts with an oily rag to keep rust at bay and they’ll last years longer. • Invest in a few raspberry canes. This has to be the best money saving crop, as they are expensive in the shops. Once established autumn fruiting varieties yield heavy crops and can give you ‘posh’ fruit....for just pennies. • The garden furniture is probably the most costly item in your garden and statistics show it’s what gardeners spend most money on replacing. Remove washable seat-pads and cushions first, wash and dry these and then cover the furniture up or move it into a shed or garage if possible. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening products including Pippa’s favourite weeder, Nemaslug, Nemasys caterpillar, slug, ant and other biological controls, Enviromesh & Envirofleece and lots more besides.

Your Guide to Heart Health By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk The British Heart Foundation estimates that around 82,000 people in England suffer a heart attack annually; one in three die before reaching hospital and around half of the survivors are under 75. So it’s vital we look after our hearts – and that we can recognise the symptoms of a heart attack. Keeping Your Heart Healthy Diet Keep it balanced. Avoid high sugar and high fat foods, and eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and several sources of protein (meat, eggs, dairy products, fish, legumes and pulses). Choose wholegrain carbohydrates (pasta, bread, rice). Alcohol Alcohol can damage heart muscle and cause abnormal rhythms. Stick to the recommended maximum safe limits: men, 3-4 units per day (21 per week); women 2 – 3 per day (14 per week). 1 unit = 1 small bottle of (4%) alcopop; half a pint of beer/lager/cider (4%); a single measure of spirits (40%). 2 units = 1 standard 175ml glass of wine/champagne (12%); 1 pint 4% beer/lager/cider; a double measure of spirits. Smoking Smokers are twice as likely to have heart attacks, so quit or at least cut down. Ask your doctor for advice or order The British Heart Foundation’s guide, ‘Time to Quit’, for free at http://bit.
ly/1ltpgIc. Exercise Ideally we should do 150 minutes of exercise weekly that raises our heart rate keeping our cardiovascular system healthy. If you don’t exercise, start small and find an exercise you enjoy. Symptoms Of Heart Attacks Heart attacks don’t always present with sudden intense chest pain. Sometimes symptoms can be mild and build gradually, particularly in diabetics, or come and go. Although chest pain is the most common symptom, more than a third of sufferers don’t experience it. • Chest pain (often a squeezing sensation or fullness, which may linger or come and go) • Dizziness or light-headedness • Sweating (normally a cold sweat) • Shortness of breath • Nausea or vomiting • Pain elsewhere (usually jaw, neck, back, left arm or abdomen) • Heartburn • Coughing or wheezing • Severe fatigue • Overwhelming anxiety Heart Attack Symptoms In Women Women may experience all these symptoms or none, but they’re more likely to experience the less common symptoms: pain in other areas (particularly the upper back), shortness of
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.
breath, sweating, nausea or vomiting, dizziness and unusual tiredness (sometimes for days). Without chest pain, they may not realise they’re having a heart attack. What To Do When A Heart Attack Occurs Don’t panic, but do act swiftly. If in doubt, always call 999. If you’re an angina sufferer, the NHS recommend taking your glyceryl trinitrate (‘GTN’) tablets or spray and repeating the dose 5 minutes later, then 5 minutes later again, if there’s no improvement. Phone 999 immediately if the pain doesn’t improve. The NHS recommends that people who suspect they’re having a heart attack should chew and swallow one aspirin (300mg) tablet, providing they’re not aspirin-allergic, to thin the blood and maintain blood supply to the heart. If you’re the patient: Move as little as necessary and call an ambulance. Take an aspirin if it’s nearby – but don’t exert yourself to reach it. If you’re attending the patient: Phone the ambulance immediately. If the patient isn’t aspirin-allergic, give them an aspirin – providing it’s nearby. Keeping your heart healthy is one of the most important things you can do – but ensuring you can recognise and deal with a heart attack is vital too. Page 43

Newent RFC had their annual Fun Day in August to celebrate yet another successful year. A number of stalls provided entertainment throughout the afternoon and the day was rounded off with the First XV defeating Cinderford Thirds in an exciting and close rugby match, Newent running out winners at 25 - 21. The stalls were very popular all afternoon, including Splat the Rat, Tombola, Ladies Rugby Course for the youngsters to try out, and especially the coconut shy at which many of the youngsters excelled! The highlight of the day was the "Soak a Bloke" in the Stocks. Whilst both Richard and Duncan Nottingham also got soaked the most popular "victim" was Dennis Hamlin, Chairman of the club, much of which was rather enjoyed by the throwers! Dennis commented afterwards "This event was a great way to say thank you to the community for their support throughout the year, which the club and all the teams very much appreciated." - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Newent wins Nationals Students from Newent Community School have fished their way to success at the School National Angling Championships. Competing against schools from across the country, the Newent team snatched the title of champions at Hallcroft Fisheries in Repton. During the 4 hour match, each team member fished in one of five sections against the other school teams. Points were awarded based on the weight of the fish caught in each section, with the team that accumulates the most points declared the winners. In a field of 80 contenders, Matt Anderson, a year 11 student at the school, won the individual title as well as his section with a weight of 17kg 40g. Harvey Shayle also achieved a section win and a section second place from George Organ ensured that the team were in with a firm chance of claiming the title. Strong performances from Jack Cleverley and Tom Cleverley secured the win for the school with a tremendous overall score of 72 out of a possible 80. Jane Price, a teacher from the school commented: ‘It was a long day, 4.30 am - 8.30 pm, and long drive but a fantastic team effort as well as some brilliant individual performances. I am very proud of them.’ Another member of staff and fishing coach from the

school added: ‘All five of the team fished brilliantly; they listened to advice, concentrated, and stuck to the task in hand for the full four hours of the match. To win this competition really does need every team member to put in a top performance and they certainly did. They were very worthy winners.’ Just two weeks later George Organ competed again in a match in Holland, representing England in the Under 19 World Championships. Narrowly missing the first place spot to France, the English team claimed second place in the competition – another great result and huge achievement for George to represent the country. With the high standard of angling talent at the school, it is likely that Newent will be named winners in many more matches to come. - by Nikki Timney Page 47

Pick A Side: Apple or Android? Is Apple where it’s at, or are Android gadgets better buys?
Apple is due to launch the latest, greatest iPhone this September along with iOS 8, the latest version of its smartphone and tablet software. The phone will have a bigger screen and a better camera, but one thing won’t change: like all Apple gadgets, it won’t be cheap. Apple isn’t the only game in town, though. Google’s Android system has been updated too, and Android phones and tablets from the likes of Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony are often just as pretty and just as powerful as anything Apple makes - and in many cases they’re a good bit cheaper too. Android isn’t quite as simple or as elegant as Apple’s iOS, but there’s not much in it - and where Apple only makes a handful of devices, with Android there are dozens of phones and tablets to choose from. Unless you’re a big Apple fan then, is Android the smarter choice? Unfortunately it’s a bit more complicated than that. Apple and Google don’t just want to be your friend when you buy a phone or a tablet. They want to be part of your entire life. They want to be the
companies you from whom you buy your music, movies, TV programmes and books, the companies who provide your in-car entertainment and navigation systems, the companies who handle all your messages, voice and video calls, the companies who connect all of the appliances in your home and who track your health and fitness. By the end of this year both firms will have smart watches or wristbands that monitor your vital signs, set-top boxes that stream music and video to your TV, software that connects to cars from the likes of Volvo, Nissan, Audi and Mercedes, music and movie streaming services and home automation systems - and that’s just the stuff we know about. This means you need to consider the bigger picture. It’s not just about the particular phone or tablet you want to buy, but what techy types call the ecosystem: the various things that the phone or tablet connects to and gets content from. For example, if you fancy Apple’s clever Apple TV system, you won’t get the best from it unless you also have an Apple phone or tablet; if you

want to use an Android smart watch, it’ll work best with an Android phone; if you’re a fan of iTunes Match you can’t use it on Android, and so on. Consider what your friends, family and colleagues use. Apple’s iMessage offers free SMS and MMS messages (and soon, voice messages too), but only to other iMessage users - and iMessage isn’t available on Android. FaceTime offers free video calling, but it can’t call Android users (although Google’s alternative, Hangouts, does work on Apple devices. As a rule of thumb Google services work on Apple kit but not vice-versa. Increasingly, then, choosing a phone or tablet is more like picking a football team to support or voting for a political party: the available choices all do essentially the same thing, but they do it in very different ways - and your choice might colour your life for many years to come. Images left to right: Apple family sharing only works on Apple devices, Both Apple (pictured) and Google have TV set-top boxes, Car firms are embracing smartphone tech: this is Apple CarPlay, Fancy a smart watch? Android ones work best with Android phones.

Newload 2 - Rock and Metal All-Dayer Fundraiser The Newload 2 Concert is taking place at the George Hotel on Saturday the 6th September 2014 from 11am to 10pm. This is the second year of the fundraiser and takes place to raise funds for Newent Skate Building Park Building Fund and for the Youth Service of Newent. Concert Organiser Aaron Jones Newload is the brainchild of Aaron Jones, a Newent resident, who is passionate about the skate park because he feels very strongly that Newent needs to do more than just the Chill Out to support the youth of the town. He has already featured on BBC Radio (Steve Kitchen's Drivetime) three times to raise awareness and intends to continue to fundraise and search out grants and to get the Newent community more involved.
Newent Youth Service did a poll of Newent youth recently and discovered a great deal of support and anticipation for the skate park. The proposal is for the park to be put in the Rec, this being the most obvious and suitable place for it to be situated.
Newent Sportsmanship benefits Charities After a very successful day called The Clash of the Titans, Newent RFC and Newent AFC teams have revealed the amounts that they have raised for the Stroke Association and St Mary's Church Roof Fund. Whilst Newent RFC's 1st XV gained the bragging rights due to their win, it is these two charities that have benefitted most. Kevin Mason, Chairman of the Newent AFC, on behalf of both teams, presented the Reverend Simon Mason, vicar of the St Mary's Church, with a cheque for £555.54 for the roof fund. Simon commented "This is a tremendous help and is really very much appreciated." Kevin commented "Both teams are doing exceptionally well at present and may I say on behalf of both teams that they are very happy to use this sort of event to put something back into the community through these two charities." Pictured L to R - Brett Gardner, Paul Mason, Kevin Mason, Reverend Simon Mason, RossWebb (rugby captain), Matt Bickers.
At the same time Kevin also presented a cheque for £300 to Kurt Meaker, who represented the Stroke Assocation.
Newent Town Council have already expressed support for the idea and the formal plans are currently being prepared for submission and approval. The concert doors open at 11am with the first band, Michigan Avenue going on at 12pm.They will then be followed by 1pm Plane Crasher, 2.45pm The Phaze, 2.30pm Ironbird, 3.15pm Thorun, 4.15pm The BitterTown Hounds, 5.15 Oakhaart, 6.15pm ASCARIS, 7.30pm Staring Out the Sun and at 9pm Fighting Wolves. This lineup is correct at the time of going to press. Tickets are £6 and can be obtained in advance from Memento Gifts in Newent or online at wegottickets.com. (£8 on the door). The concert is sponsored by Newent Cleaning Fairy and MG Accounts and is supported by Newent Initiative Trust. Aaron says "Last year we raised more than £700 and we hope to do even better this year. I have to fit organising this event around my busy work and family life but I am happy to do it. I believe every child matters and that they are entitled to explore their own potential and to have something to occupy themselves and to look forward to. The skate park will, alongside the Chill Out Zone here in Newent, allow them to do this and give them their own choices as opposed to peer pressure. There are already very successful skateparks in Hereford, Stroud and Ross so why can't Newent have one". - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

External Parasites of Dogs
- Fleas & Ticks
Ticks are free living parasites which recognise warmbodied animals and then jump on to it, they then latch on and suck their blood, this can cause irritation and localised infection and they sometimes carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Our record is having a dog with 135 ticks! Fleas tend to multiply within the house and with the warmer weather we have seen many more flea issues and flea allergy problems, in cats as well as dogs. Fleas are present all year round and also become more prevalent in the warmer weather. There are numerous ways of treating a dog for fleas but some of the old preparations are not particularly affective. We tend to use spot-on preparations which also kill mites and lungworm, Seresto collars, in-feed products or now there is a new tablet called ‘Bravecto’ which covers fleas and ticks for three months with a 100% money back guarantee! Please contact us at Leadon Vale Veterinarinary Centre if you have a flea or tick problem. Tel: 01531 632276
With the warmer weather this summertime fleas and ticks have become extremely prevalent, and it has been an especially good year for ticks. Dogs and cats are out more exploring and hunting in the sunshine; parasites are a problem all year round but mainly they are a problem in the summertime. They are particularly rife in some areas especially where there is rough foliage and bracken. Thus if you take your dog on holiday to Exmoor or the New Forest etc. it is almost guaranteed that you dog will become infested with ticks, however in our area, particularly the Malvern/Eastnor area, you are particularly likely to get a tick problem. However, ticks can simply be picked up in your back garden.

The Better Life Pump Ups the Volume
by Derek Thompson
scraping sound stops and the spout gurgles with water. And then away you go. Although, I have to say, Anne humming the Popeye theme while I pump castiron doesn’t add much to the experience.
This year, our aim was self-sufficiency in water for the garden. The addition of a Rainwater Hub - fixed to the wall and intersecting a downpipe (never underestimate the value of a competent neighbour) - means that we now have a gravity-fed system of connected water butts. Like many homes these days we’re on a water meter, so it makes economic as well as eco sense. Our back up system is a subterranean tank at the rear of the house, which - fortunately for us - was a present to the previous owners from their grown-up children. (Sometimes chocolates, flowers or socks just aren’t enough!) The only downside is that you have to prime the top chamber with water each time and then pump like billy-oh until the
Recently we noticed that the pump needed more priming even though it was delivering less water. My reactive solution was to impersonate Stephenson’s Rocket until the pump shrieked in pain. Luckily, taking the pump apart was a job I could actually do for myself, thanks to my trusty antique mini wrench (a £1 bargain at a local car boot sale). To be fair, the warped shaft was both not my fault and my fault - like a Zen riddle. Specifically: I didn’t manufacture the inferior quality pump shaft, but I had bought it online because it’d seemed like a bargain. “There’s a blacksmith down on the industrial estate,” Anne revealed, as I looked on - not for the first time - in awe. My admiration faded a little when she added, “And we’d better buy a proper gasket as well, while we’re about it.” I always get a thrill at meeting craftspeople. Not only are they doing something that I can’t (which could cover anything beyond growing mint and
Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.
writing unpublished novels), but they are also artisans with a heritage. The suitable burly blacksmith shook his head in dismay as I handed him the warped shaft. I felt though I’d insulted his profession. He told us that he’d made a few cast-iron pump shafts recently and he liked to make them individually. Now, you don’t get that at your local DIY store. Next on Anne’s list was the gasket, which entailed a visit to a leather outlet. The oldtimer behind the counter, who, frankly, looked a little leathery himself, gave me a withering smile when I meekly passed over the ailing gasket. He seemed to take a shine to us though, recommended that he manufacture a new gasket from quality hide, and then tried unsuccessfully to sell me a leather hat and motorcycle belt combo. Alas, I was never born to be wild though - born to bewilder, perhaps. A week or so later, we collected the parts and I redeemed myself by putting the pump back together. I’m no expert, but I’d say the pump is now working brilliantly. We’ve learned valuable lessons too - the benefits of using local craftspeople, how buying cheaply can be a false economy, and that my feet can’t touch the road on a standard Harley. Fortunately for me, my eco-bike suits me down to the ground. Page 55
