Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Hello Reader, It's September and it's all about the onion! Gloucestershire's largest free-ofcharge, one day festival returns with over 100 stands: arts and crafts, plants, fairground rides, dancing, live music, lakeside events, street entertainers, local produce, beers, wines, ciders, fruit juices and, of course, onions! OnionEd has also waved his magic onion and has organised a special treat for the 20th Onion Fayre. Onion Fest 'The After Party' will be headlined by The Beat alongside 3 Daft Monkeys and Nizlopi. When OnionEd plans a party, you can be sure that party will certainly rock! It's also back to school this month, good luck to all the children starting their new school years - make it a good one! OnionEd’s Blog So, it’s September! The month we’ve all been waiting for! Newent Onion Fayre always seems to come around so quickly! Which is great as it means less waiting! The programmes are out in the shops, so when you pick up your Newent magazine to read this blog, make sure you hand over your £1 so you can find out what’s happening on the day! There’s so much going on, it’ll help you to plan where you’ve got to go and when you’ve got to go! With live music from The Roving Crows, Sons of Navarone, The Ultimate Beatles, Woo Town Hillbillies, Folklaw and A1 Institution and an open-mic stage with lots of fantastic local musicians playing, you’ll be stuck at which one to listen to! There’s

also a dog show to watch, an onion show to visit, over 140 stalls to go around, a food festival to taste, cookery demonstrations (including children’s classes) to learn from, fairground rides to ride, street entertainers to see AND don’t miss the world famous onion eating at 1pm on the main stage! Phew! And if this isn’t enough, make sure you come and give me a big hug when you see me out and about! This year however, for one year only, the real party is starting in the evening – with Onionfest, the after party! If you haven’t got your ticket – get in quick! You don’t want to miss this spectacular event around Newent’s lake, with the stage going out over the water! Along

with live music from The Beat, 3 Daft Monkeys and Nizlopi (lovely boys, I met them the other week), there’ll be fairground rides, food and drink AND a laser light show display by the same organisation which put on a sky show at Gloucester docks, lighting for celebrity tours, such as Kylie and has lit up many other famous landmarks across the country! All I can say now, is enjoy Newent Onion Fayre 2015 and our one-off 20th anniversary spectacular, Onionfest – after party. It’s a day for Newent businesses, clubs, groups and individuals to join together to show our town at its best and show the world how fantastic it is. So, come on Newenters, let’s celebrate!

- OnionEd P.s. So, I guess you want to hear all about my encounter with the Cheeky Girls? Well, what can I say, a handsome onion like myself, of course, they couldn’t keep away! And as a humble onion, I will say no more. Please mention Newent Magazine when responding to adverts.

Newent Face Painter Draws the Crowds for Kodak A local Newent face and body painter drew the crowds in more ways than one at a recent event organised by photographic store Kodak Express in Rosson-Wye as part of the town’s annual carnival. Born and bred Newenter Sandra Markey was contacted by Kodak Express via Facebook and spent the day at the Ross store painting faces in aid of County Air Ambulance. “We were absolutely delighted with the response.” Said Eric Scarff of Kodak Express. “There was a constant stream of youngsters, and even adults, waiting for face painting from the minute Sandra set up.” “The staff at the store got straight into the swing and we were all first to be made up. I even drove home

as Captain America after we closed the doors at the end of the day!” Kodak Express makes photographs into lasting memories by printing shots taken on devices like digital cameras, mobile phones and tablets. Rather than ‘in the old days’ having to have a whole roll of 36 pictures printed you can now select just your favourites and just have those printed or enlarged for framing, made into a canvas print, mug or T-shirt, to name just a few of the latest ideas. Bound photo books are also a wonderful way to show off a selection of photographs taken at memorable events like weddings, family parties or that special holiday. Kodak Express is located on Gloucester Road in Ross-on-Wye.

Enchanted Newent

The day of the opening

Newent has a new shop in the quaint Shambles Retail Village in the form of a mystical shop intriguingly called "Enchanted". Shop owners Hazel and Richard Cutting and Rhiannon Hill opened the doors to their first customers on the 1st August. Hazel describes the shop as 'brining a taste of the Glastonbury mystical experience' to Newent. The shop sells gifts such as oils, incense, crystals, books, soft furnishings (cushions etc) and cauldrons together with Indian and Tibetan wares. Hazel continues 'We saw a gap in the market and felt that Newent would benefit from this type of shop and the Shambles Retail Village was the ideal place for it.

This has been a massive learning curve sourcing everything but great fun nonetheless. We have been overwhelmed by good wishes and offers of help. We have been pleasantly surprised by the number of customers that have already been to the shop and look forward to continuing to serve all our customers in the future'. Enchanted will be open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm and the online store is due to open in August. Why not come to the Shambles to see for yourself? Shambles Retail Village is a small courtyard set in the centre of Newent which also has other shops providing such things as baby clothes (Baby Shambles), handmade bags (Mona's Bags), books (Gill's Books), retro antiques (The Forge), hair and nails (Jallows), Erol's Cafe and Erol's Takeaway, Meryem's Turkish Restaurant, Nick's Tattoo Parlour as well as the Newent Information and Visitor Centre. - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography

Golden Years Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning

North Sea oil and gas reserves may be running dry, but for exactly 50 years they have been making an enormous contribution to our economy. For it was on 21st September 1965 that BP announced that its barge, Sea Gem, had made the first successful “spud”, or test drill, 40 miles off the Yorkshire coast. Sea Gem was one of a number of competing test rigs prospecting the North Sea at the time. Geologists had been certain for quite some years that the reserves were there, and in mind-boggling quantities. But it was only in 1964, when Britain joined the European Free Trade Association, that the North Sea was considered worth a really serious look because EFTA membership meant the end of the tax incentives that had propped up Britain’s not inconsiderable onshore oil industry. That’s right – Britain’s not inconsiderable onshore oil industry. Anglo-Iranian Oil (which eventually became part of BP) had been operating several wells in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire since the Page 16

1930s. Their output had been invaluable during World War II and when Iran nationalised its oil-wells from 195153, and in 1964 they hit peak production. But now, despite the operating difficulties and a technology that was still in its infancy, the North Sea beckoned; and BP engineers based at Eakring near Mansfield improvised the Sea Gem using a French-built work barge, eight specially-made telescopic legs, and a drilling rig. In June 1965, Sea Gem went to work. Sea Gem’s well was actually the fourth to have been spudded in British waters. The first had been for an American company in December 1964, and two more followed in spring and summer 1965. By September all three had been completed and found only dry wells. When Sea Gem started work a further four rigs were also drilling, but showing no signs of success. By 17th September Sea Gem’s drill had bored down to nearly 3,000 metres, and it was starting to look as though this was yet another dry hole. When its instruments began to indicate the presence of gas, nobody got too excited – it wasn’t uncommon to find small pockets as the drill went deeper. But then the fluid

retrieved from the bottom of the well was observed to be frothing and bubbling. Within two days the rig’s crew were certain they had a viable well; and on 21st September BP announced publicly (but very cautiously): “A test in BP’s North Sea well now being drilled by the Sea Gem 42 miles east of Humber has produced gas, but not in sufficient volume to be commercially significant. The well is being drilled deeper in the hope that commercial production may yet be encountered.” It needn’t have been so cautious. By mid-December, that first well was yielding ten million cubic feet of natural gas a day – enough to justify the building of pipelines to the shore. It was the start of a new era. There was a tragic postscript, though, for the drilling of the North Sea’s first successful well was immediately followed by the deaths of its first victims. On the night of 27th December, while Sea Gem was moving to another test site, two of its legs gave way. Sea Gem quickly collapsed and sank beneath the icy waters; and although most of the crew were rescued, 13 men died.

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

Happiness Europe is now being challenged with a massive immigration situation. This is heading towards epic proportions as people flee from terror and others risk their lives to hopefully have a better life. I have been working in the Ukraine and learnt that 1½ million people have been displaced due to the Russian invasion. What has that got to do with happiness? When we meet people and enquire how they are the standard British response is “not too bad, thank you”. It’s as though we are expecting to be bad. We have been conditioned to grumble, moan and find fault with our lot. The reality and truth is we are pretty fortunate and should be much happier than we admit. Let me share with you something that I promise will make you happier and dare I say more prosperous. Liggy Webb, the world authority on modern life skills, in her brilliant book ‘Thank You’ (she lives in Cheltenham) develops the concept of an attitude

of gratitude. We all know of the amazing power of the brain and when it is thinking positively it really is mind-blowing what our brain will do and achieve for us. So here is what you can do to become a little happier: 1. Just before you go to sleep at night recall three things that happened during the day that made you happy. 2. If you are able to say thank you to God – great – if not just say and think thank you. You will go to sleep on positive thoughts and start developing an attitude of gratitude. 3. The following day your first thoughts should be a thank you for the night – for being alive – and a thank you for what you have. These first thoughts flash through your mind in a few seconds, but are all positive and will kick-start your brain into its success mode. Auction Anecdote Although I have worked in salerooms for over twenty-five years I still constantly meet new and interesting items which I have never seen before - this I suppose is one of the main attractions of the job. However it is not often that one is introduced to something quite so weird and wonderful as one of the entries brought in for our antiques sale on the 24th July. The item in question is not only strange in itself, but it also has the strangest name - which is ‘God in a bottle’. It consists of a group of finely carved miniature wooden items usually on a trade related or religious theme place in an old glass drinks bottle – very similar in fact to the age old clichéd classic of a ship in a bottle. However ‘God in a bottle’ is far rarer than a ‘ship in a bottle’ and originates from Irish folk art created by displaced Irish workers in Northern Britain during the late 19th century. Of course I have had to research all this information as I had not the faintest idea what this ‘thing’ was when it first appeared in my saleroom – in fact I was initially rather worried that the very murky contents were intended for consumption and was very relieved to find that they were not. Our example included a range of carved woodworking and gardening tools arranged around a central crucifix and it was given a conservative estimate of £50/£80 due to it’s needing a thorough cleaning inside - which did not look to be the easiest of restoration jobs. However the internet and saleroom ‘magic’ worked once again and their was a considerable amount of interest – folk art and treen is very popular at present and four ‘God in a Bottle’ examples were a star item in last years Tate Britain’s ‘Folk Art Exhibition’ which must have helped as well. In the end the bottle sold to a specialist dealer on the telephone who had to fight the internet for it with a winning bid of £360. I just hope that if I ever encounter another ‘God in a bottle’ during my career my client will be truly impressed when I know exactly what it is! - Written by Rita Kearsey Manager of Smiths Auction Room at Newent

Praise For Pre-School After Ofsted Inspection A Newent pre-school has been praised for its work in supporting local children after being judged as ‘good’ at its latest inspection.

The Family Tree Children’s Centre Pre-school, in Bradfords Lane, is managed by Barnardo’s on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council and provides early education for two, three and four-year-olds. Ofsted inspectors described children as “motivated, keen to learn and make good progress” and recognised the pre-school’s “strong partnership with parents”. The inspection report said: “Staff use their qualifications and knowledge of how children learn to plan experiences that engage the children.

For example, they are asked for more information about how they should help their children. Consequently, staff send home bags with different activities and books to share with children.”

The pre-school is part of the Family Tree Children’s Centre which provides free support and advice to local parents and carers of under-5s. Second round of small community grants open for applications

Voluntary and community groups across the district have been given a further opportunity to apply for a one off grant of up to £2000. There is a total sum of £5000 available from the Council to support local groups who can demonstrate how they work in partnership with others and how their goals will benefit the local community, as well as innovative ideas for building community capacity projects. Cllr Terry Hale, Cabinet Member for the Community said: "This is a further opportunity for local voluntary or community groups from across the district to apply for local funding. The funding provides a great chance for people to get together and work with their community to achieve things for themselves. So far this year 19 local community groups have been awarded a share of £14,800. We hope that more applications come in for this round of smaller grants so that more communities benefit from our District Council funding. We will be looking for more groups who can demonstrate a good sense of partnership working in their communities to achieve sustainable long lasting results for local people." All submitted applications will be rated against set criteria with grants being given to those who meet the criteria and show the best value for money. Application packs are available on our Community Grants website page. Alternatively you can contact the Community Engagement Team on 01594 810000 or email community.engagement@fdean.gov.uk The call for additional applications is open with immediate effect and will close once the remaining funds have been allocated. Biffa & FoDDC Litter Competition Winners

The competition asked entrants to design a poster to illustrate the problem of litter. One of the winning designs by Holly Clifford, Abby Walker, Tegan Smith, Isabelle Jones will now be used as livery on Biffa’s street cleansing trucks which are used daily by a team of operatives who are responsible for keeping the Forest of Dean clean. In the press release issued by Forest of Dean District Council, Councillor Marrilyn Smart, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: ‘The entries have been really outstanding and we have been impressed by the level of understanding that the children have shown about the problems of littering. Litter harms our wildlife and local environment but there is a high financial cost too. In total it is estimated that 30 million tonnes of litter are collected from streets in England every year, costing close to a £1 billion to clear up. The more that we all do to eliminate litter can only be good news for the tax payer.’ The press release also included a comment from James Walker, Manager of Biffa’s depot at Cinderford, who said: ‘We have had a very tough decision in choosing our winners and we would like to thank all the children and schools which took part in the competition. In total we received over 130 entries. The new livery will continue to spread the message about why litter is such a problem and what actions we should all take to prevent it.’

Cake and Bake Lemon Crumble Cheesecake Bars Tangy and creamy with a golden buttery crumble topping, these cheesecake bars make a delicious sweet treat. For a smoother cheesecake filling, use full-fat soft cheese instead of the ricotta. 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Grease an 18cm x 28cm tray-bake tin and line the base with baking paper.

Ingredients: THE BASE • 250g plain flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 140g butter, chilled and diced • 125g caster sugar • 1 medium egg, beaten THE FILLING • 750g ricotta cheese • 225g caster sugar • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 3 medium eggs, beaten • 100ml soured cream • 1 tbsp cornflour • Fresh mint sprigs, to decorate

3. Bake the cheesecake base for 15-20 minutes, or until pale golden. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 160C/ Fan 140C/ Gas Mark 3. 4. To make the filling, beat the ricotta cheese, sugar and lemon juice and zest in a bowl until creamy then gradually beat in the eggs. Fold in the soured cream and cornflour and spread the mixture over the warm base. 5. Sprinkle the reserved fine crumble mixture over the top in an even layer. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes, or until set and pale golden. Leave in the tin to cool completely then chill for 2-3 hours. Slice into 12 bars and serve decorated with fresh mint sprigs.

TIP

Makes 12 slices Ready in 1½ hours, plus chilling Page 32

2. To make the base, sift together the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs then stir in the sugar. Reserve a third of the mixture and chill in the fridge. Stir the beaten egg into the rest of the mixture to make a crumbly dough. Spread into the base of the prepared tin and press down firmly in an even layer.

For an extra fruity flavour, scatter some fresh blueberries or raspberries over the cheesecake mixture before sprinkling with the crumble mixture.

Newent Train Station Lives!

Despite Mr Beeching's rail cuts in the 60's Newent Train Station still lives. In his garage in Newent Dood (Derek) Pearce has created a wonderful scale model of the station, faithfully reconstructing virtually every detail. Dood says "I have worked on this for some time and produced an actual working model. I am very proud of the result as it follows the layout with almost 99% accuracy". It is clear that this could only have been achieved by great deal of painstaking research and patience and the result is truly stunning. The photographs don't do justice to it however Dood says "I will be displaying this at the Onion Fayre on the 12th September. So if you fondly remember the station or wish to see it for the first time do come along. There will also be a competition with all proceeds going to charity.

PETS

Which are the Main Vaccines Available for my Cat? Vaccinations and boosters are part and parcel of owning any pet. Here are some of the diseases posing the greatest risk to your cat’s health. Cat Flu The existence of many different strains of flu means that it will never be completely wiped out, but a cat flu vaccine provides a degree of protection against this disease, which can spread rapidly between cats. Infectious Enteritis A widespread virus, Feline Infectious Enteritis can be fatal. It is a severe infection of the gut caused by the feline parvovirus, which can be picked up from infected animals and equipment, including bedding and food dishes. Feline Leukaemia Feline Leukaemia is transmitted via saliva, and can be deadly if not overcome by the cat’s own immune system. The vaccine offers some protection for outdoor cats. Indoor cats may not need it due to their low exposure to risk. Feline Chlamydia Cats between the ages of five weeks and nine months are said to be at particular risk of Feline Chlamydia, a disease characterised by conjunctivitis and sneezing. The vaccine does not protect against the infection, but helps to reduce its effects. Which vaccines should you give your cat? This depends on several factors: • Its age and general health • Reactions to any previous vaccinations • Its risk of exposure to disease An initial course of vaccines may be given to kittens as young as seven weeks old, with regular annual boosters needed throughout life in order to maintain immunity. http://www.rspca.org.uk/ adviceandwelfare/pets/general/ vaccinating http://www.pdsa.org. uk/pet-health-advice/ kittens-and-cats/ health#vaccinations By Ann Haldon

External Parasites of Dogs and Cats - Fleas and Ticks Despite the fact that it is September we have had a fair amount of warm weather this summer. People are out walking their dogs and cats are out exploring and hunting. The parasites are a problem all year round, but ticks are a problem in autumn and winter time. They are prevalent in certain areas where there is rough foliage and bracken, especially in the New Forest and Exmoor area your pet will almost certainly get infested with ticks. In our area the Malvern’s and the Eastnor areas are very prevalent. However you can just pick up a tick infection in your back garden. Ticks are living parasites that recognise a warm blooded animal and jump onto it. They can cause irritations and localised infections but they

sometime carry diseases such as Lyme disease. If you travel abroad ticks are carriers of numerous other diseases, so it is particularly important to be aware of this when travelling abroad. Ticks are very prevalent and we frequently have dogs with numerous ticks on them. Some of the older preparations have been quite poor, but we do have an effective collar called “Seresto” which lasts for seven months and is extremely effective. We also have a very good, new product called “Bravecto” which is a tablet and lasts for three months. This is guaranteed to prevent your dog from getting ticks for three whole months – there is a money back guarantee for this, we

have found this to be very effective against flea and tick prevention. There are also some very effective spot on treatments, please contact us for advice on these products as it is difficult to know which product to use for different animals. As not one product does every single parasite and what kills ticks may not kill mites, worms etc.

If you like any advice please contact us on: 01531 632276.

Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre AS and A2 results Summer 2015

2015 has been another successful year for our Year 13 students with a 97% pass rate at A2 as well as success in the full range of other courses available at the school in the Sixth Form. We are very pleased with all our students performing well against targets based on their prior attainment at GCSE in both our traditional areas of Science and the Arts and courses such as BTEC Level 3 Food and Nutrition and Sport. Rebecca Dean is to be congratulated on her A*s in both Maths and Further Maths with an A on Physics and C in Chemistry at A2. Rebecca is going on to study at Bath University. Going onto Sheffield University, George Probert is to be congratulated on his A*s in English Literature and History and B in Government and Politics at A2. Other very successful A2 students include Jocelyn Saxelby with A*, A and B and Annabelle Hookway-Jones with two As and a B, both going on to study at Exeter University. Sophie Clifford achieved A* in Art and Design and a further A and B grade in Graphics and Drama. James Christie secured an A* in Maths alongside Bs in Further Maths and Physics and Pascal Neumann A* B B B (German, French, Gov & Politics, Psychology). As well as going on to University places with courses as diverse as Drama, Performing Arts, Law, Biological Sciences, Maths, Criminology, Automotive & Transport Design, Countryside Management & Conservation, Forensic Biology, Stonemasonry (Bath College) and Events Management, students have achieved a full range of destinations from the broad range of pathways, including entry to a range of apprenticeships in the NHS, Unilever, Dowty, Two Rivers Housing Association and Foundation course places at Art colleges and elsewhere. There have been some really great results at AS again this summer - with a further improvement on the pass rate at AS. Students worth a special mention are Tim Klee who achieved no fewer than five A grade passes in German, Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry; Daniel Carpenter is to be congratulated also on achieving three As in Maths, Further Maths and Physics as well as James Summerfield for his As in French, Maths and Further Maths. Also special congratulations go to Frank Un who came to the school with very little English and has achieved grades A (Maths) B (Further Maths) and C in Physics.

GCSE Results 2015 We are delighted for our Year 11 students who recently picked up a great set of GCSE results from Newent Community School and Sixth Form Centre. We are delighted that the overwhelming majority achieved the grades they required to take the next step in their lives, whether that be doing A levels or vocational course with us at Newent, attending college, taking up an Apprenticeship or entering the world of work. We are delighted to report that, thanks to the dedication of our students and staff, the school is going from strength to strength with a very pleasing improvement on last year’s results, yet further sustaining high performance in Maths, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Fine Art, Business Studies, Child Development, French, Drama, Psychology and PE. Furthermore we are delighted with students’ outcomes from their wide range of starting points with 66% A*-C overall. To be congratulated are our 22 students who achieved at least 5 GCSE A or A* grades, the 50 students that achieved at least 5 B grades or better and the 141 who got at least 5 C grades.

Astronomy: A hobby that’s (literally) out of this world Star Trails

The spectacular appearance of the Perseid Shower, every year in high summer, is an event that demonstrates just how exciting watching the night sky can be. The Perseid Shower is a stream of space dust and particles that flows behind the rather unromantically named Swift-Tuttle comet, forming a glittering procession of meteors. Make the effort to get up early to watch this natural light show and you’ll have a good introduction to astronomy. Studying the stars and planets can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, whether you are a beginner, observing with the naked eye, or a tech-lover equipped with a substantial telescope and accessories such as a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera for capturing those night-sky panoramas. First steps As an amateur astronomer you’ll need to become thoroughly familiar with the night sky: understanding how it changes, not just throughout the hours of a single night, but season by season, and even when viewed from different latitudes. Most beginners will be tempted to buy a telescope, but remember if you live in an urban area where there is light pollution it’s unlikely you

will get a clear view of the night sky, however powerful your telescope may be. The size and quality of the lens is important, but be warned: many of the instruments sold by nonspecialist shops are simply not up to the job. The views of space you can expect with a standard telescope may not match the stunning shots taken from space (without the blurring effect of the earth’s atmosphere), but with a little effort you should be able to see the rich detail on the Moon’s surface, the rings of Saturn and the planet Jupiter’s surface contours, together with its four larger moons. Once you become more familiar with the night sky you may also be able to locate and view distant galaxies and star clusters. Learning about astronomy There are many online sources of information, books and software packages to help you get to grips with this vast subject: a list of publications is available from the Royal Astronomical Society’s website (www.ras.org.uk). If you want to make a serious study of astronomy, there are a number of distance learning courses available. The Open University offers a certificate in “Astronomy and Planetary

By Kate McLelland Science”, which provides a basic introduction that can be studied in separate modules: see the OU website at www. open.ac.uk for more information and costs. Alternatively Liverpool John Moores University offers short courses for under £200 (see www. astronomy.ac.uk). Joining the astro community Astronomy is fun, but it can be even more enjoyable when you link up with others. The British Astronomical Association has supported amateur astrologers since 1890 and on their website (www. britastro.org) you can chat to other enthusiasts via BAA’s online forums or find out about meetings and events taking place all over the country. Astronomy Clubs UK (www. astronomyclubs.co.uk) is also a fantastic resource where you can search for a local club, find blogs and podcasts or search out places to visit. Whether you’re interested in how the universe was formed, the movements of the planets or the prospect of meeting an alien life form, astronomy is a fascinating and far-ranging topic. It’s a hobby that’s literally out of this world, and there’s no better place to start than in your own (suitably dark) back yard. Page 47

Health Sitting Comfortably? It Could Be Killing You. By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Even if you exercise regularly, too much sitting could significantly shorten your life. With employment and entertainment becoming ever more sedentary, sitting down for hours is the norm for many of us. But in the last decade, research has increasingly proved that prolonged sitting is a health risk in itself, regardless of how much or how little exercise we do, and can cause irreversible damage. Disturbing rEsEarch A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine in 2008 estimated that for every hour we sit watching TV after the age of 25, our life expectancy decreases by 21.8 minutes, while a 2012 study in the Lancet estimated that inactivity causes 9% of premature deaths. So how does sitting shorten life expectancy? Recent studies showed a 147% increase in the incidence of cardiovascular events (incidents causing heart muscle damage) and a 112% increase in diabetes risk amongst those spending longest sitting, Page 50

compared to those who sat least. Inactivity is known to increase breast and colon cancer risk too - and unsurprisingly, obesity. James Levine, Director of the Mayo Clinic-Arizona State University Obesity Solutions Initiative, has said he believes sitting is more dangerous than smoking. “We are sitting ourselves to death.” We know prolonged inactivity results in decreased bone density, and evidence now shows it reduces the action of enzymes that maintain healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Some experts have suggested the effects of prolonged sitting may partially resemble those of zero gravity, causing the accelerated ageing, bone and muscle loss that occurs in astronauts. Unfortunately, exercise sessions aren’t a “cure for too much sitting,” explains Professor Marc Hamilton, from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, in Men’s Health. “The average person could never do enough to counteract the effect of hours and hours of chair time.” tackling thE ProblEm A moderately active lifestyle which includes housework, walking or gardening is ideal. Take regular active breaks from seated activities like reading and watching TV: mop the floor, take a quick walk, or do a few minutes of ‘step’ (an exercise step isn’t required. Stairs will

do). You could also consider: • Reducing your sitting time by standing on public transport, walking or biking to the station, or getting off the bus earlier. • Standing or walking while on the phone. • A standing desk, a desk that converts between sitting and standing, or a unit that converts your normal desk to a standing one. • A treadmill desk (or attach a bracket or stand to your treadmill). • Sitting on a yoga ball; your core muscles will be used constantly to retain balance. • Walking or organising a sporting activity at lunchtime. • Active Sitting. It won’t replace standing or walking, but makes sitting healthier. Try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lower your lower leg from knee height or whole leg from hip height; swivelling your office chair using just your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders. • Using the Pomodoro Technique, described here: http://pomodorotechnique. com/. This time management technique inserts regular breaks – that’s the time to get active. So next time you’re about to start something, stop. Does it have to be done sitting down? If not, then don’t sit! Bear in mind, though, that constant standing isn’t ideal either. Experts recommend aiming for a 50/50 split between sitting and activity.

Newent in Bloom Winners The local results are out! Newent’s Best Garden of 2015 is Southcote, Southend Lane. Judges described it as “amazing” & well worthy of the Supreme Champion Garden of 2015. Its gardeners will hold the Smiths Chartered Surveyors Perpetual Cup for a year. This will be presented at the Memorial Hall at 4pm on Onion Fayre Day, along with certificates for many other gold, silver & bronze standards and the category winners. A full list of awards is posted in the Chill-Out Zone window in

Broad Street and in Newent's tourism information point in The Old Shambles Retail Village. A double award winner is 25/27 Church Street, which has won best in category for ‘Frontage without a garden’ and in the new category for ‘Greening the Streets’, an RHS initiative to transform grey areas. Judges commented “everyone has noticed what a magnificent effort has gone into this. Now bursting with flowers and brimming with colour, it’s made a real difference to us all.” Best commercial premises goes to

Erols for their ‘gorgeous, very full baskets’ as the judges describe them.

Newent Beaver Scouts have achieved the best youth award for planting at the bus stop in Broad Street and for their insect hotel in the library garden. “Colourful, healthy, educational & exceptional” were the judges comments on this year’s best example of an environmentally friendly effort, which goes to the Childminders Group for their raised beds transforming a corner of Lewall St car park. In the public & community effort category, a special award goes to Dominic Compton, who has been an outstanding volunteer this year. The NinB group would like to thank Ann Allen and her judging team for all their work. Meanwhile Newent waits to see how our town has fared in the Heart of England in Bloom regional campaign, part of Britain in Bloom. Their judges visited Newent in July. Results will be announced later in September.

Lovely Lawns by Pippa Greenwood Almost every garden has a lawn, and there is a lot you can do to keep it in good condition. Don’t wait until spring but get to work now with some autumn lawn care to keep your lawn looking healthy and green. Large weeds in small lawns are best removed by hand, perhaps using a sturdy old kitchen knife – perfect for removing dandelions, small clumps of daisies and other weeds missed by the mower. You should also take a look at the level of moss in the lawn: when green and luxuriant it can look quite attractive, but once it dies out the lawn will look really awful. On the whole, moss in lawns is encouraged by compaction, poor drainage of the soil and lawn surface and by excessive shading, perhaps by nearby trees or herbaceous plants in adjacent borders. It is worth doing anything you can to alleviate these problems, and for shading you should prune back shrubs which overhang the lawn or have trees professionally crown thinned or lifted, so that more light gets through to the lawn. Herbaceous plants are easily dealt with by using bamboo canes and string to ease them up and away from the grass. Compaction is relatively easy Page 58

to deal with, and in small areas where the problem is not too bad, you can use a normal garden fork. Drive this into the lawn every 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6 in) and ease it back and forth slightly to enlarge the holes created by the tines of the fork. This creates some drainage channels, which will also improve aeration. On very heavy sites or where compaction is bad, use a hollow tine aerator. These can be bought as attachments for some lawnmowers, or you can buy or hire a dedicated machine or piece of equipment. A hollow tine aerator removes cylinders of turf and the soil beneath, thus producing a better effect than using a garden fork. Once aerated, brush a sandy top dressing mixture into all the holes, using a mixture of sieved garden soil and horticultural sand, perhaps mixed with a small quantity of sieved leaf mould. The top dressing ensures that the holes are kept open to allow better drainage and aeration over a longer period.

before you attempt to rake it out. Raking out can be combined with scarifying, where you use a spring tined rake to aggressively rake the surface of the lawn, so that dead moss, thatch (the accumulated bits of dead grass and other lawn debris) and any other surface debris are removed. Once done, you will find that the lawn looks a lot worse than it did when you started, as it will look thinner and more moth-eaten. However, scarifying helps to ensure that the grasses receive plenty of air and allows for better re-growth; have faith, the situation will improve.

Use a proprietary moss killer if moss is really out of control, applied exactly according to the manufacturer’s instructions; you should make sure that the moss is killed off completely

Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for vegetable plants, Nemaslug, mesh and fleece, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders, SoftTie, pop-up crop covers , copper tape and lots more besides.

If you still have bare areas once you have improved the texture of the soil and fixed drainage problems, then re-seed or over-seed using a suitable grass-seed mixture. To improve germination and speed of growth, pin a piece of horticultural fleece or Enviromesh over the newly sown area. This will help keep it warmer and prevent birds from stealing the grass seed.

Newent Walk for Health Newent Walk for Health Group assembled again recently to continue their inspiring walks around Newent Lake. The group take these walks every 2 weeks with the aim to make people of all ages much fitter. The numbers of people walking averages 10 and on this occasion 1 year old Daniel Hames and 4 year old Nathaniel Gorley took part as well as the older members of the group. The walks are gentle strolls not power walks and start out from the Chill Out Zone in Broad Street taking the footpath around the lake, weather permitting of course, and can be as long or as short as the participants wish them to be. It seems however that it takes

some extremes of weather to stop these hardy folk from venturing around the lake. The leader of the group, Margaret Highton, says "It is great to see people of all ages taking part. Newent Lake - Rules & News

A few items to remember when wishing to go fishing on Newent Lake: • Always carry permits when fishing the lake and show to the bailiffs when requested • Obey all the rules outlined on the yellow boards at both ends of the lake and in the permits • Please take all rubbish home or put in the waste bins distributed throughout the lake • Two things to bring (if possible) along with rods, reels etc., a landing net big enough to land large carp, and an unhooking mat to protect fish while on the bank. The banks have grass but have gravel and stones underneath, the mat is there to protect fish while unhooking. • Permits for fishing Newent Lake are available from the Newent Centre, Ross Road traffic lights, and 1st floor Newent Town Council offices between the hours 10am-12 Noon Mon-Fri. First obtain a fishing licence from the Post Office (you need a full annual licence to obtain a fishing permit from Newent Town Council.) Permits available to Newent residents - proof of address is required, plus members of Newent Angling Club can also fish the lake.

The lake has seen approx. 7 sets of ducklings this year since the beginning/middle of April, the last set witnessed mid-July were wandering the lake and grass banks on their own, unfortunately it looks like the mother has been predated as we haven’t seen her recently. In late May our resident heron brought along with him 2 other herons and they were sighted on large ash trees near the outflow in the conservation area, the herons must know it’s a good place to fish, as all the local anglers already aware... The wooden bridge at end of lake by the overflow has now been repaired and is available for all to use. A note for anglers, do not leave tins on the banks, put them in the waste bins provided. Please note all dog owners must have their pets on a lead while in the park and clear up after them. There does appear to be a number of dog owners letting their dogs off leads and

Finance What you need to know about NS&I Premium Bonds By Ann Haldon Premium Bonds were first introduced in 1956 by Harold MacMillan as a way to reduce inflation, and they remain a popular savings choice today. It is estimated that over £50 billion is held in the Premium Bond ‘pot,’ making them the largest savings product in the UK. Not a ‘standard’ savings option, bonds pay no interest and never expire. They can make you a millionaire though, if you are lucky enough to win one of the two £1 million draws each month. How do they work? Bonds up to the value of £50,000 can now be bought following a recent rise in the maximum limit. At the other end of the scale the minimum purchase is £100 which buys you 100 £1 bonds, with all bonds being entered into a monthly prize draw. Premium Bond numbers are picked at random by ERNIE (Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment), and you can check whether you’re a winner via the NS&I website from the third day of each month. The government funds the prize money by calculating a rate of interest as if the bonds were ‘standard’ government bonds, rather than using money from the sale of new Premium Bonds. You can buy them from Page 66

a post office, or directly from NS&I by phone or online. How much can you win? Winnings range from £25 to the £1 million jackpot, with prizes also including a percentage of £25,000, £50,000 and £100,000 wins each month. Returns average the equivalent of around 1.3% according to Moneywise, who also state that the chance of winning from a single bond are approximately 1 in 26,000. You can be lucky though – the Guardian recently reported a £1 million jackpot winner who had held just £400 worth of bonds. For those wanting a reliable income from their savings, however, other products would be more suitable if they are willing to forego instant access in favour of higher interest rates. What are the main benefits of Premium Bonds? • All winnings are tax-free – a big draw for some people, especially as ISA rates remain low • Bonds can be cashed in with no notice needed • They can be purchased for a child or grandchild with a minimum investment of £100 (unless you are paying by standing order, in which case it is £50) • There’s no risk of losing your capital – Premium Bonds

are backed 100% by a government guarantee • You can choose to have your winnings reinvested in more Premium Bonds, which works in a similar way to compound interest in a savings account • Premium Bonds never expire Unclaimed prizes If you bought Premium Bonds in the dim and distant past, it might be worthwhile looking on the NS&I website where there’s an ‘unclaimed prizes’ finder. With no time limit for claiming, even bonds from 1957 are still valid, and there is a reported £41 million yet to be claimed. Premium Bonds cannot be passed on to someone else on the death of the holder. They remain eligible to win prizes for 12 months, but can be cashed in at any time. NS&I also provide a tracing service, not just for Premium Bonds, but for any of their savings and investment products. Should you choose Premium Bonds over traditional savings accounts? The problem with Premium Bonds is that because you are not guaranteed a return on your money, the investment could reduce in value over time due to inflation. Other savings accounts, even though their interest rate may be low, offset this issue a little.

To advertise call 07939 802 384 or 01531 805000 or visit www.newentmagazine.co.uk.

If you are a higher rate tax payer, you may find investing in Premium Bonds useful if you have already exhausted other tax-free options. People often buy bonds after inheriting money, or sometimes when they need to ‘store’ a lump sum temporarily – a deposit on a property or an inheritance, for example. So in general terms, Premium Bonds should probably not be the first choice for savings – the main attraction for many is the potential chance of a big win. On a lighter note ERNIE has become something of a celebrity over the years. According to NS&I he receives Valentine’s and Christmas cards – possibly from bond holders trying to court favour and influence his decisions? If you do win the £1 million jackpot, don’t expect a cheque through the post. ‘Agent Million’

will call to deliver the news in person. NS&I claim that one Agent Million has informed more than 100 winners of their new millionaire status. Government’s wishes for Premium Bonds Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Harriet Baldwin, explained the government’s goals regarding Premium Bonds, “Our long-term plan is all about supporting savers and boosting working people’s financial security at all stages of life… That’s why we have increased the amount people can invest in premium bonds for the second time in two years.” Although not suitable for savers looking for a guaranteed regular income, Premium Bonds offer a way to boost a nest egg. They hold a special place in the nation’s heart – along with ERNIE of course.

In August a new community cafe opened in the Chill Out Zone in Broad Street, Newent. The Chill Out Zone is operated by Newent Initiative and is normally used as a Youth Centre. However now that Fair Shares has moved their meeting venue to Ross Willis House this has allowed Newent Initiative to set up the cafe. The Cafe is open every Wednesday, in the first instance, from 10am to 12 noon. This new venture is headed up at present by Margaret Highton, who is also Chairman of the Newent Initiative, and offers tea, coffee and biscuits for the people of Newent who wish to stop for a short rest in comfort. At present the cafe also offers a pool table and free computer wi-fi but the facilities will increase in time. Margaret says " We hope the cafe will provide a nice comfortable meeting place and we will be improving facilities as funds allow. The opening was a great success and we shall be open every Wednesday from now on from 10am to 12 noon. The cafe is there for all Newent residents to use as well as the elderly and vulnerable members of our community". - by Colin Thomas, Crystal Flame Photography
