GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY

What’s in a Name? One of my earliest articles for the directory, when it served only Bishop’s Cleeve and Woodmancote, discussed the meaning of local place names. In this month’s article I want to turn my attention to the place names in the Winchcombe area. They can help us to understand more of its history. The starting point for any place name investigation is the earliest recorded spelling of it, although the name might have been in use for many years before then. The earliest record of ‘Winchcombe’ so far discovered is Wincelcumbe dating from about 800AD. It means a corner or bend (wincel) in a valley (cumbe), possibly indicating a remote valley. Its valley position is obvious from any vantage point on the surrounding hills. Should there really be an ‘e’ at the end? Until the late 1800s it was more common to omit the ‘e’ but since then it has normally been used. The next time you visit Cheltenham, take a look at the interesting spelling on the nineteenth-century street sign above Thomas Cook’s on the corner of Winchcombe Street!

interesting exception is Cowl Lane, with the earliest recording as Colestrete in 1269. The name has nothing to do with cows or the cowls worn by the monks at the abbey, but refers to charcoal. Whether charcoal was made there, bought and sold there or stored there will probably always remain a mystery. The town’s agricultural past is commemorated by ‘Enfield’, found along Back Lane, first recorded in 1539 and meaning the infield: that part of the common fields closest to the town and therefore cultivated every year. Beyond the infield lies Langley, first recorded in 1462, and referring to ‘a/the long clearing’ made when the hill was largely covered by trees. On the opposite side of the Isbourne valley, ‘Corndean’ (1181) means ‘valley with a corn mill’, reminding us of the historic importance of the River Isbourne and its tributaries as sources of power. Winchcombe in its valley

Winchcombe street names are first recorded much later and most are straightforward to understand: North Street (1184), High Street (1217), Vineyard Street (1270). An Page 6

GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY ‘Sudeley’ was first recorded as Sudlege in Domesday Book and then as Suthleia in 1175. This seems to mean ‘a/the clearing to the south (of Winchcombe)’. However, it has also been argued that such a meaning would have produced the name ‘Southley’ and that the present name really means ‘a/the clearing with a shed’, although whose shed and for what purpose would have been lost in the mists of time. Beyond Sudeley, Spoonley (1287) means ‘a/the clearing where wood chippings were left’ which seems to indicate a place where wooden tiles, or shingles, were made for use in the buildings of the town. It is yet another ‘ley’ name indicating the extensive woodlands which once surrounded the town.

There is still extensive woodland above Sudeley

Finally, we can move to the vale. Greet was first recorded as Greta in 1185 and means ‘a gravelly place’. Grettun was also first recorded in 1185. Its obvious meaning is ‘the farmstead on the gravel’ but this causes problems for the experts as there is no obvious area of gravel in the village. As a result it has been suggested Gretton means ‘the farmstead near Greet’. More research needs to be done here! More details on all the names discussed here, and many others in the Winchcombe area, can be found in the local libraries. I hope to return to this topic in a future directory and discuss some of the place names in the directory’s wider distribution area on the Cotswolds. - David Aldred

Seasonal Recipe Venison is a lean and flavoursome red meat which is in season from October through to February. For the best quality, buy from a trusted butcher or farmers’ market. This warming casserole is perfect for a weekend supper served with creamy mashed potato and a glass of full-bodied red wine. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2. Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7 minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

Take The Floor Katherine Sorrell offers a guide to fabulous flooring, from the traditional to the unconventional

Oak Palazzo Rovere – a Dutch pattern design oak floor with a satin lacquer prefinish, from £50.15 per m², Kährs, 023 9245 3045; www.kahrs.co.uk.

Timber Timber boards are a fabulous choice: available in a range of colours and patterns, they just get more attractive as they age. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recondition an existing wood floor; otherwise, choose new hardwood from an environmentally friendly source, or perhaps seek out recycled boards in architectural salvage yards. Solid wood floors can be sanded, painted, limed, stained, waxed or varnished. Cheaper, but less longlasting, are either a multi-layered or veneered wood floor, where the surface is a thin layer of hardwood attached to a base of cheaper wood, MDF, cork or plywood; or a woodeffect floor, in which a photograph of wood is bonded to a chipboard base and protected with a high-pressure laminate surface.

good quality underlay is essential. Natural fibres In a wide range of colours and weaves, sisal, coir, seagrass, rush and jute are warm and soundproof and, often, good value for money. As you’d expect, the rougher the surface, the more hard-wearing it will be – so you may find sisal and coir uncomfortable underfoot at first. Jute has the softest feel, but is the least durable. As with carpet, a stain inhibitor is advisable for natural fibre flooring. Hard surfaces Sandstone, limestone, granite, marble and terrazzo are expensive floorings that last a lifetime, though they are hard, noisy and cold underfoot. In areas that might get wet, such as kitchens or bathrooms, choose a version that is matt or slightly textured – sanded for a rough finish, or riven for an attractive, hand-split effect. Terracotta and ceramic tiles have similar qualities but are cheaper and offer less of a luxury look. Ceramic tiles are heat- and water-resistant, hard-wearing and low maintenance. They vary widely in price and come in a vast array of shapes, sizes and designs, but all are liable to crack if something is dropped on them.

Carpet Carpet is another great choice: soft, warm and quiet underfoot. There are two main Katherine Sorrell offers types: woven, which is harder-wearing and more expensive, and tufted, the durability of a guide to fabulous which is related to its pile height and density (short, dense pile the is the toughest). A leather floor (tiles or sheets) is warm, soft and quiet underfoot, and requires little more than regular buffing and waxing. It wears well, too – scuffs and marks acquired over the years are part of its attraction.

Concrete floors, though cold and hard, can be dyed in innumerable colours and given an interesting variety of finishes, from polished to painted.

Rubber floors have a cool, stylish look and are great for waterproofing bathrooms. They come in tile or sheet form, and can be solid-coloured or patterned, smooth or studded.

Burning Desire! Boom! A firework display erupts in a cascade of colour and noise, marking summer in a tourist town. Whoosh! A rocket arcs into the night sky to celebrate a birthday, wedding or special anniversary. Nowadays there is hardly a single event – summer or winter – that doesn’t merit a pyrotechnic show at the end, complete with its crowd of spectators providing the obligatory ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’. So why does November 5th still hold such a special place in our hearts? It’s a fairly safe bet to say that the original reason for Bonfire Night – to commemorate the gory end of Jacobean terrorist Guido Fawkes and his fellow plotters – isn’t really on our minds these days when we celebrate the date. November 5th is one of those important times when young and old can come together – despite the dark and the cold winter weather – to enjoy a shared experience complete with its own traditions. Central to that ritual is the bonfire itself. The attraction of fire is hard-wired into our DNA. Some historians speculate that the activities we associate with Bonfire Night are actually borrowed from much earlier, pagan traditions and the dates certainly seem to fit. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain began on October 31st (coincidentally our date for Halloween) and extended to the following day. At sunset on October 31st local villagers would assemble in order to build a giant bonfire, which then became the focal point of the event. The word ‘Samhain’ means “summer’s end” and communities came together both to thank the gods for the harvest and to help them face the long, dark months ahead. Ancient people also believed it was a time for contacting – and sometimes appeasing - the spirits of dead ancestors who might

Page 22

lend a hand from the ‘other side’ to help the community through the challenges of winter. At the end of the celebration, each family would take a torch from the bonfire and bring it back to their home, where all fires had been deliberately extinguished the day before. These fires were then re-lit using the flame of the sacred bonfire: it was believed that if the fire went out, troubles would follow. This summer it has been interesting to observe a shadow of this practice in the rituals surrounding the Olympic torch – particularly the care that has been taken in preserving the flame throughout the national relays building up to the opening ceremony of the 2012 games. We consider that we belong to an enlightened and sophisticated society, so it is fascinating to observe the extraordinary pains taken by officials to ensure that the light originally sourced from the Temple of Hera at Olympia in Greece is not extinguished. Just as our ancient forefathers venerated the fire from the sacred Samhain bonfire, we treat the Olympic flame as a living being that must not be allowed to ‘die’ in case our hopes of success are extinguished with it. So next time you are standing round a November 5th bonfire – or even lying back in the bath, surrounded by a mass of flickering candles – you can reflect on our very human need to use fire as a bringer of hope and cheer. High Tech TV

Could the googlebox become a Google Box?

Although TV technology has changed dramatically over the years, with sets getting bigger, thinner and more detailed - and in some cases threedimensional - the way we use them has barely changed until now. Here’s how some of tech’s biggest names want to transform your television. Samsung’s awfully named UE40ES8000 TV shows where things are heading. Its bright 40-inch LED display can handle both 2D and 3D and more interestingly, can be controlled by waving at it. Your first wave gets the TV’s attention, and you can then change channels or volume with simple gestures. There’s a lot to gesture at. In addition to a Freeview HD tuner, there’s also integrated Wi-Fi wireless networking so that the TV can connect to your wireless network, enabling iPad-style apps such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube. You can also subscribe to film-ondemand services such as Lovefilm and Netflix, or use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. There’s even a Skype application for making voice and video calls. It’s clever stuff, but there are two problems. The first is the price. At £1,499 the UE40ES8000 is the

Page 28

cheapest in the range. The second is that we tend to keep our TVs for much longer than we do our computers. Will Samsung’s apps still work three years from now, or five? Will something better come along and make it obsolete? For now the smarter choice might be a box that brings similar features to your existing TV. Apple’s TV (£99) is one option, offering iTunes movie downloads and rentals as well as optional Netflix video on demand. It can also stream movies from your Mac, PC, iPad or iPhone. A similar Google-powered set from Sony, the NSZ-GS7 (£200) goes on sale this summer, and a version that also includes a Blu-Ray disc player is expected later this year. If you’d considered an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 but dismissed them because you’re not too interested in games, it might be time to think again: both consoles have dropped in price (you can get them for less than £150) and become powerful multimedia systems. For example the Xbox has its own Zune video marketplace as well as apps for Sky TV, Lovefilm

and Netflix. Nintendo’s Wii is handy here, too, with both iPlayer and Netflix available, and you can even get Lovefilm and Netflix-enabled DVD players. Just bear in mind that to access those services you’ll need to connect your devices to the internet, and you’ll also need to pay a subscription fee for the video on demand services. Today’s TV technology is very clever, but the big question is whether Apple TV, Google TV or any other hightech system will take over the mainstream: many of us find Sky+ boxes and Virgin Media TiVo’s enough hassle, and adding all kinds of apps and services to the gogglebox could annoy as many people as it enthuses. There’s also the issue that technology isn’t always as good as it’s cracked up to be: despite our Xbox having both voice and gesture recognition in the shape of its Kinect sensor, we’ve often found ourselves bellowing and waggling our arms with no effect whatsoever. If your current TV set-up is doing everything you need it to do, it might be a good idea to wait a few years before upgrading. That way you’ll see what, if any, TV technology emerges triumphant.

Estimated to be over 20,000km in length

The Great Wall of China Did you know that in 2012 the Great Wall of China more than doubled its length? After a five year survey by state archaeologists, it is now estimated to be over 20,000 km, and rising. Only 8% is reasonably well preserved but it is still considered the largest man-made structure on earth. So, can you really see it from space? Unlikely, since even the first Chinese astronaut could not confirm it. Yet, steeped in 2000 years of history and a UNESCO heritage site, the Great Wall fires up the imagination with images of invading hordes and brave soldiers fighting for emperor and country. It all started with disjointed earth defences built by warlords. When the first emperor unified China around 200 BC, all he had to do to protect his borders was connect the existing sections. Extended over time, eroded, destroyed and strengthened, much of what we see today dates back to the Ming dynasty who came to power in the 14th century, conscripting a huge labour force to build and rebuild

with stone and brick. Their successors, the Manchus, did not need to breach the wall. By 1644, the peasants were starving and the gates opened by rebels. As discontinuous today as it was in the past, the wall includes natural defences such as deep gorges and cliffs alongside man-made fortifications, over 800 of them, though not all visible or accessible, in the Beijing province alone. Most visitors head for the Badaling section but north east of the capital, Mutianyu is quieter and just as spectacular, at the end of a scenic 70km drive through lush countryside sprinkled with farmhouses, meadows and orchards. Wild flowers line the road, all purple and gold, and weeping willows dip their roots in natural springs. When the mountains begin to rise, higher, closer, excitement grows with every bend of the road. In the grand scheme of things, Mutianyu is merely a dot but beautifully restored; snaking up and down on a vertiginous ridge, it takes your breath away. Here the wall is rather special, reaching nearly eight metres in places, up to five metres across the top, with unusual perpendicular extensions,

22 towers, spaced every 100 metres or so, a triple-towered gate and crenulations on the inner and outer parapets so arrows could be shot in both directions. Arrow’s nock, bull’s horn ring, eagle flying belly up, the names of defences send shivers down your spine. Only the brave attempt the long climb to access the wall - most visitors take the cable car and save their energy for the top. A wise move, for up there it’s a rollercoaster of a trek, all steep steps and slippery slopes. Yet gazing up to the pass and the highest tower, etched into a pure blue sky, you feel on top of the world. The sun beats down, the shade is scarce but the views are fabulous; rugged mountains bristling like a dragon’s back, shadows creeping across the slopes, precipitous cliffs and spring blossom on the trees. Now and then, a gust of wind sweeps over the ancient stones and you can almost hear the clicking of armour and voices from a distant past. Far below, the tourist stalls beckon with cool drinks, pottery and Great Wall souvenirs, but on the ridge, there are no distractions, just an unforgettable panorama and 2000 years of Chinese history. by Solange Hando

A new children’s yoga-inspired activity group, built around Tatty Bumpkin, has come to Cheltenham. Led by the Tatty Bumpkin character herself – an engaging fair-trade rag stick-doll who lives on “Wobble Farm” and whose mantra is ‘bendy, giggly, clever and strong’ - the classes encourage movement and enhance development in young children from the age of two to seven. Baby Bumpkin classes will be launching in early 2013 for babies from six weeks old. The Cheltenham franchise is run by Andrea Warner, a specifically trained CACHE accredited Tatty Bumpkin teacher with an enhanced CRB check. These fun filled classes focus on the ‘well-being’ of the child and you, thus providing a firm foundation for social, emotional and physical confidence - all required for future happiness and success. The programme has been developed by educationalists, paediatric physiotherapists, musicians and yoga teachers ensuring the creative, fun sessions are based on sound principles of child development. They are closely linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and hence follow the most up-to-date thinking on learning and teaching.

In this digital age we’ve loosened our grip on the tangible. In ‘Scrapbook Secrets’, Kimber McGray shares her tips on how to turn your memories into a masterpiece by rediscovering the art of decoupage, collage and collecting. With step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to preserve your most cherished memories and family history, incorporated into your own work of art.
