A. Raymond Priestley – a Treasure Frozen out of Fame This winter there has been a proliferation of centenaries of the deaths of members of the ill-fated Antarctic expedition of 1912. This is perhaps inevitable but it does eclipse the important role of a survivor - Tewkesbury’s Raymond Priestley. Captain Oates was the second to succumb. Suffering from gangrene, he sacrificed his life for fear of burdening the rest of his party. The remaining three had expired by 29 March after nine days in a blizzard without food. Among them were Dr. Edward Wilson who is commemorated by a statue in his native Cheltenham and the leader, Captain Scott. The bodies were discovered on 12 November 1912 and, when the news was broken in February 1913, it created “a national mourning the like of which has rarely been seen since”. In Tewkesbury, however, this misery was replaced in May 1913 by a thanksgiving peal by the bells of Tewkesbury Abbey to greet the return – and survival – of Tewkesbury-born Raymond Priestley. This student of geology had been a more junior member of the expedition and had been detailed to a party making scientific studies. However, he and five companions could have lost their lives when the expedition ship ‘Terra Nova’ failed to pick them up as it was cut off by pack ice. They survived the dark and extremely cold Antarctic winter in a snow house, carved out of a large drift on ‘Inexpressible Island’, equipped only with summer clothing and four weeks’ rations. Fierce gales prevented the use of tents and their diet was mainly seal and penguin meat (which was good for combating scurvy). Their only source of heat was to use seal blubber and tea was a luxury only for Sunday, with leaves used again and again until they were valued as a substitute for tobacco. They combatted boredom by reading aloud one chapter of a book each night - and by singing remembered songs. Priestley was grateful that he had remembered the hymns that he had learned Page 6

at Tewkesbury Methodist Church. They dreamed of lavish meals - but woke up to yet another meal of penguin. They left their ‘snow-home’ on 1 October 1912, reaching base camp on 7 November 1912 only to receive the devastating news of the death of their leader, Scott. Raymond, was born in 1886, second son of Edward Priestley, Headmaster of our first Grammar School in Church Street – and, like the rest of his brothers, he was an excellent cricketer. Whilst a geology student at Bristol University, he applied to join Shackleton’s expedition in 1907.

Upon his return that year, Shackleton was knighted, while Priestley contributed to Shackleton’s book “Heart of Antarctica”. It was whilst completing it in Melbourne Australia, that he was recruited to join Captain Scott’s 2nd Expedition.

Priestley’s Grammar School today (C Brown)

Raymond also survived the Great War as a Major and winner of the Military Cross – unlike two of his brothers Stanley and Donald who were killed. He became the successful Vice-Chancellor of Melbourne University. After his knighthood in 1949, Sir Raymond was an inspirational Chancellor of Birmingham University before retiring to Bredon’s Norton. He died in 1974 aged 88. His name has already been commemorated in Priestley House at Tewkesbury School, which proudly displays his Antarctic Sledge. As the sadness of 1912 is commemorated elsewhere, Tewkesbury Museum, led by Curator Maggie Thornton and volunteer Trustee Sue Edlin¹, will be presenting an Exhibition celebrating Priestley’s miraculous survival and very successful educational career. It takes place in Barton Street from 3 April to 26 May – his life is something of which Tewkesbury can be proud. - written by John Dixon President of Tewkesbury Historical Society ¹ Sue Edlin wrote ‘Antarctic Survivor – Tewkesbury’s Polar hero’, published in Tewkesbury Historical Society Bulletin, no. 10 (2001). A Queen By Any Other Name

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland. There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer. Games were organised, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously. In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…” In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago. Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of

Page 10

strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us. In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said. How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’ Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-

comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims. True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable.

This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no

It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen. Daniel Hicks

Seasonal Recipe Asparagus For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again. This delicious recipe is simple to cook and the mild flavours of the mozzarella and eggs mean that the asparagus is still the star of the dish. Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. Trim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time. Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato. Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears. Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned. Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up. Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm. Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

The gadgets that can help everything from hay fever to humidity Page 16

We tend to take air for granted, but the air around us isn’t always on our side: it can contain airborne allergens that make our eyes red or our noses run, or it can be too hot, too cold, too dry or not dry enough - but technology can help.

Something in the air For many people hay fever is a particular pain at this time of year, and there are a number of gadgets that promise to reduce its effects or prevent it from affecting you altogether. Both the Lumie Haylight (£49.95) and the Lloyds Pharmacy Hayfever Reliever (£39.99) are careful to avoid making specific health claims but there’s certainly anecdotal evidence that light therapy devices such as these can make hay fever more bearable. It’s also a good idea to know in advance what the pollen count will be like and there are plenty of smartphone apps that can help. We particularly like Clarityn’s two apps: the Allergy Pollen Forecast tells you when hay fever is likely to strike, while the Clarityn Sneeze Alarm is an alarm clock app that uses different sneezing sounds to tell you what kind of day you’re likely to have. Another option for allergy sufferers of all kinds is an air purifier or ioniser. The former removes irritants - pollen, for example, or dust mites, or pet dander - from the air using ultraviolet light or a filter,

while ionisers use electrical charges to attract and trap contaminants. Air purifiers can cost anything from £40 to several hundred pounds - but they can be very effective, although if your allergy is to your pets the combination of a decent vacuum cleaner and a device such as the Furminator pet groomer (£16) may be a cheaper option. Another way to change the air around you is to use a humidifier or a dehumidifier. The former is designed to make your home more humid, which can help reduce the symptoms of dry coughs, dry skin and other irritations, and options range from steam humidifiers - devices that boil water to create steam - to ultrasonic humidifiers, which create a cool fog of water droplets. For many British homes, however, the problem isn’t that the air is too dry: it’s that it’s too wet. Overly humid houses can cause health problems and irritate existing ones. Dehumidifiers address

this by filtering the water out of the air into a water tank or permanent pipe, and prices range from about £49 for a small device suitable for flats to £199 for a high capacity model such as DeLonghi’s DNC65. Even if your house doesn’t suffer from damp, a dehumidifier might be worth considering if you have to dry your clothes indoors: dehumidifiers can dry your washing much more quickly, and unlike tumble dryers they’re not hugely expensive to run and they don’t crease your clothes. Sometimes all you want is to move the air around a bit, and there are plenty of fan heaters and cooling fans to choose from. Among the most interesting - and most expensive - options are two devices from Britain’s favourite inventor James Dyson: the Dyson Air Multiplier (£299) blows air without the buffeting you get from traditional blade fans, while the Dyson Hot (£269) uses the same technology to beam hot air. If you like the idea but not the price tag, a halogen heater (from around £15) offers directional heating on a much smaller budget.

Get A Look

You’ll Love from a salon that’s perfect for you

Hair by Paul Mitchell

We all need a change from time to time and a great hair colour, manageable cut and fashion-forward finish is all that’s needed to make us look and feel amazing. However, finding a hairdresser that will deliver what we want and at a price we can afford can be difficult. So, it’s important to think carefully about choosing a salon that’s right for you, before taking the plunge and trying out a whole new look.

Get A Look

Putting a price on your hair It’s crucial to establish how much you are willing to pay for your hair-service, as salon prices vary widely. Local hairdressers are generally cheaper, while inner city salons and those that boast award-winning stylists can cost considerably more. But, if you are willing to invest in your tresses and don’t mind the extra spend, look out for a salon that belongs to the British Hairdressing Fellowship, as these teams are sure to be at the top of their game. Usually salons structure prices around the level of skill and expertise of their stylists and colour technicians. So, if you have a particular issue with your

hair - such as it being over processed and damaged, or in need of a colour correction procedure - then it is certainly worth spending that extra bit of money to take advantage of the most highly experienced and skilled member of the team. However, if you are just after a simple trim or all-over colour, then a visit to a junior stylist is an affordable and sensible option.

Going Green

Top tips on turning your motoring life eco

THERE are some eco-warriors out there who believe the humble automobile is the devil on wheels. But in recent years car manufacturers have worked hard to change the car’s planet killing image with hybrids, electric vehicles and fuel-sipping eco models like VW’s Bluemotion range. But what if you can’t afford a new car and still want to go green? Well, fortunately there are ways you can cut your carbon footprint – and it doesn’t have to mean walking! Simply thinking about how and when you use your car, the products you use and the way you look after your vehicle can make a real difference. Simply planning trips to coincide with one another, not going out especially to buy fuel, and sharing a commute can all help. But it’s not just about how and when you use your motor – just as important is the way it’s looked after. Here are our practical tips to make car ownership greener. CHANGE YOUR STYLE No one likes to be told how to drive – but if there’s one guaranteed way of slashing your CO2 output it’s by changing your driving habits. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking, drive with the windows up to avoid drag and remove any unused extras such as roof racks. Stick to the speed limits and change up at the most economical point – roughly 2,500rpm for petrols and 2,000rpm for diesels. And think about switching off the engine if you’re going to be stationary for more than two minutes IN A LATHER A clean car might be a pretty car, but do you need to do it every week? If you really must spruce it up, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose to save water or cut it out completely with a waterless cleaning agent like Miracle Drywash which lifts dirt with a cloth. SPRING CLEAN Carrying around your golf clubs and a set of tools can seriously inflate your fuel consumption – 100kg of unnecessary extra weight can increase it by as much as six per cent. Have a clean out of any unneeded kit

in your car and stash it away in your garage instead. CHECK IT OUT When your car is serviced regularly it’s not only less likely to break down, but it’ll be more environmentally friendly too. Good quality oil, fresh spark plugs and air filters are all essential – neglect any and your fuel consumption will be worse and your carbon footprint higher. PLAN AHEAD Using sat nav is not only a great way to make motoring less stressful, but it’s green too! By avoiding getting lost and taking the most direct route to your destination you’ll cut fuel bills. Use one with traffic jam detecting capability and you’ll cut CO2 even more. HOME ALONE By servicing your car at home you can ensure all parts used are recycled. Fluids, such as waste oil and antifreeze, should be taken to a specific recycling centre. Starter motors, alternators and some bulbs can also be recycled. Check tyre pressures as part of the service, and periodically in between – correctly inflated rubber saves fuel. AT YOUR SERVICE Even things as simple as insurance, breakdown cover and vehicle inspections can be green. The Environmental Transport Association provides all of them in a carbon neutral way. GREEN OPTION Try a fuel saving tyre – such as the Michelin Energy or Firestone Fuel Saver – which claim to reduce fuel consumption by adding silica to their compounds. And you could try ‘green’ cleaning products, like the CarPlan EcoCar range which offers a host of environmentallyfriendly products derived from vegetable and plant extracts.

Titanic Myths

The band played until the very end This wouldn’t have been possible as the ship was listing and the band members would have been unable stay standing upright.

The Titanic was trying to set a speed record Communication was not as it is today and arrangements for the arriving passengers would have been made days or weeks in advance. If they had reached New York ahead of schedule most of them would have been left standing at the docks.

Third class passengers were locked below deck There was no attempt to keep third class passengers from getting into the lifeboats, or to divide potential survivors by class in any way. The reason relatively few ‘steerage’ passengers survived was partly due to being so far from the deck, and partly because many didn’t speak English and wouldn’t have understood the evacuation instructions.

White Star Line said Titanic was unsinkable The promotional material actually said “...as far as it is possible to do [Titanic] is designed to be unsinkable”.

The high number of casualties was due to insufficient lifeboats Whilst it’s true that there were only enough lifeboat spaces for around one third of the passengers, not all the lifeboats were launched. Panic and interference from passengers coupled with not enough skilled manpower, meant time ran out anyway and the last two lifeboats floated off the sinking ship. Indeed the first lifeboat that was launched had a capacity of 50 people but had just 12 passengers onboard.

Spotlight on LCM Flat Roofing LCM Flat Roofing is a local business based in Tewkesbury. We caught up with owner, Liam Mellor, to find out more about flat roofs and how to stop them from leaking! What is a flat roof? A flat roof is where the pitch (angle) of the roof is very small and normal conventional tiles cannot be used. The main objective is to keep water out. Flat roofs are commonly found on garages, sheds, dormers or much larger roofs like a extension or school block. What are common problems? Many flat roofs are covered in felt and through extremes in temperatures can break down and leak. The warmth of the sun causes blistering and the roof becomes brittle and cracks. Also with this style of roof, chippings and stones attract the growth of moss and plants, also degrading the roof. What services does LCM Flat Roofing offer? We specialise in what we believe to be the best two up to date methods on the market for flat roofing. EPDM which is a rubber membrane usually installed as one piece to prevent any joins and seams, therefore eliminating weak spots, and GRP which is a fibreglass membrane also with no seams or weak spots. It consists of 5 layers: plywood deck, a premium resin undercoat, a 600 gram fibreglass mat with another premium resin coat, finished with a coloured topcoat of your choice. We choose to use 600 gram over 400 gram mat as we feel that if a job is worth doing it is worth doing properly. We also insulate roofs where necessary which can be very beneficial in the long run. Also the renewal of fascias and guttering. With the versatility of the fibreglass it can also be used for gutters and pond linings. How do i choose between the two methods? On my website you can find a list of advantages to both systems that will best suit you, or just give me a call for a free, friendly, no obligation quote. Why should i choose one of the above methods over, for example, more traditional felt? Both of these systems, EPDM and GRP, have a life expectancy of over 50 years and both come with a guarantee of 20 years for the rubber and 25 for the fibreglass. So not only are they more attractive to look at but are by far better lasting. It is known that some insurances won’t pay out on contents that have felt roofs older than 7 years old. Page 28

I’d like a quote - what do I do next? If you are considering having your roof updated, feel free to visit our website www.lcmflatroofing.co.uk to view some more photos of how your roof may look, or simply give us a call. Turn

Burglars into Bunglers

with home security aids

An Englishman’s home is his castle and today it is a castle under siege. The stark rise in crime and antisocial behaviour has homeowners - in rural and urban areas alike - running scared and ever more concerned with a problem that law and order fails to address. But despite this sad fact there is a fast-growing home security market that is equal to the problem; ready and able to empower the individual and preserve the sanctity of home. If the statistics are to be believed many of us will fall victim to crime, but thanks to an extensive range of affordable, simple and easy-to-use home security devices, protecting your property, possessions and family is becoming easier. This is a guide to some of the most popular products around at the moment. Fence Prikka Strip, £8.95 - A simple, cheap and effective way of protecting your property from intruders. Each anti-climb strip consists of a series of closely arranged cones that are formed from durable weatherproof PVC. Easy to trim to the size you require, the strips can be glued, screwed or nailed into place and are perfect for use on all perimeter fencing. Byron CS11D Dummy CCTV Camera Unit, £12.29 Flawlessly replicating a real CCTV unit, the dummy camera is extremely realistic. The accurate design and flashing red light gives the appearance of a genuine and operational camera. Driveway Monitor, £18.49 - Recognising intruders up to 100ft away, the Driveway Monitor offers cordless infra-red detection of heat or movement and alerts the homeowner via a radio signal that’s sent directly to the indoor receiver. Frostfire Home Security Bar, £23.50 - Designed for use with both standard hinged doors and sliding patio doors, the Frostfire Home Security Bar can be wedged at any angle to prevent forced entry. Because it’s made from 20-gauge steel, the bar is incredibly strong and exceedingly robust, and so protects against forces of up to 150 kg. Fake TV Burglar Deterrent, £24 - Simulating the appearance of an active television set, the Fake TV helps to create the illusion that someone’s at home by using realistic LED lighting. An inbuilt sensor automatically triggers the system at dusk and thanks to its compact design, it’s perfect for use anywhere in the home.

Top: Fence Prikka Strip. Bottom: Fake TV

Security Wireless Camera, £29.50 - Suitable for use both inside or outside the property, the wireless camera makes for fast and easy positioning and transmits images both day and night - due to its night vision capabilities at 8-10 meters. Ex-Pro Complete 2.4GHz CCTV Camera, £94.97 - A robust weatherproof design makes this wireless system ideal for outdoor home security. With automatic activation of LEDs at night and good quality night-vision combined easy connectivity, it’s just the thing for all your home security needs. Yale Locks Alarm Wireless Home Starter Alarm Kit, £124.98 - Completely wireless and ideal for flats, garages or terraced and semi-detached homes, the alarm system is easy to install - causing no damage or disruption to home décor - and comes complete with a wireless remote control access pad that’s easy to operate. Not every device is necessary however, or easy to fit. So before you rush off to shop for gadgets, it would be well worth taking advice from a locksmith or security consultant and ensuring you have the right solution for your home. By Helen Taylor

Exclusive Boiler Scrappage Scheme £400 off! SO WHAT IS THE CATCH, THERE IS ALWAYS A CATCH WITH A DEAL LIKE THIS? No catch; this is a genuine offer with no small print. If you want to replace your boiler this spring then get in touch with us and we will give you a free, no obligation quotation for a new boiler. Accept our quotation and you will get a £400 discount off the invoice cost of your installation, it does not matter how old the boiler is, or in what condition. We take pride in offering our local customers a professional boiler installation carried out by fully trained engineers at a competitive price.

Scott Johnston, MD of Johnston Scotia tells us about the latest offers they have for you to improve your heating and hot this spring. SO WHAT CHOICE OF BOILERS IS IN THIS SCHEME? We have two excellent brands that we have teamed up with to bring customers this offer. They are Viessmann, which is a German boiler manufacturer and Intergas from the Netherlands. Both of these companies have been making high efficiency condensing boilers in Europe since the 1980’s, both offer a 3 year product warranty which is extended to 5 years when the boiler is installed by Johnston Scotia. Both guarantee the heat exchanger of their boiler for 10 years. These boilers are rated over 90% for efficiency and designed to lower your heating bills.

W HY SHOULD I CONSIDER REPLACING MY OLD GAS BOILER? Boiler technology has advanced greatly in recent years and now boilers are able to deliver high levels of energy efficiency and reduce your bills whilst delivering more hot water and better heating.

£400 OFF

SCHEME ADVERTISED A COUPLE CF YEARS AGO, ARE THERE STILL DEALS LIKE THAT?

We have approached two boiler manufacturers to join us to set up an exclusive scheme offering a £400 Boiler Scrappage Discount with no restrictions when customers accept our quote for a new boiler until the end of this summer.

PERFORMANCE OR EXTEND THE LIFE OF AN EXISTING BOILER?

Johnston Scotia can help you achieve better efficiency, improve your hot water and heating and extend the life of your boiler by carrying out a professional cleansing of your boiler and heating system called Power Flushing. W HAT IS POWER FLUSHING AND WHAT ARE ITS BENEFITS? There is a natural chemical reaction that takes place between heated water and the metal in pipe work and radiators, this process can be slowed down by adding chemical inhibitors to your heating system but eventually you will get a build up of sludge deposits in radiators that create cold spots. This debris and any metal particles get pulled into your boiler, slowly clogging up and blocking the components and making the boiler less efficient, resulting in less hot water, poor heating and higher fuel bills because the boiler needs to work harder. SO HAVING A POWER FLUSH SOLVES THIS?

THERE WAS THE BOILER SCRAPPAGE

The government sponsored scheme was only open to certain types of boiler and although successful came to a swift end because of limited funding.

SO HOW DO I TAKE UP THIS DEAL? Simply contact us for a free, no obligation quote to replace any gas boiler of any age and when you accept our quote you will benefit from a saving of £400 off the cost of the installation.

Yes it does, we spend a day using a machine to pump heated chemicals through each radiator of your heating system to remove the sludge, we also use a magnetic filter to remove all the metal particles from the boiler, radiators and pipe work and when we have finished we install a FREE magnetic filter to help prevent future deposits coming back – All for only £499. Wonderful Windows They keep in the warmth and keep out prying eyes, but window treatments are much more than a purely practical addition to a room, says Katherine Sorrell Curtains – where to start The cheapest and most subtle option for hanging curtains is undoubtedly a plastic or metal track. Double tracks can be used to hang both nets and thicker curtains neatly, while triple tracks allow you to use flat panels, perhaps of different fabrics, which can be pulled back and forwards in different combinations depending on the effect you want or how much light you wish to allow in. The more decorative alternative is a curtain pole – perhaps in see-through acrylic, slender stainless steel or pale-painted wood – and with pretty finials on the ends. On narrow windows or dormers, portiere (or swing-arm) rods are an alternative to fixed poles, while for a modern effect you could use tension wire, fixed taut within the window opening.

windows. Very light fabrics will tend to look floppy unless supported by a lining. Lining is, in fact, always a good idea, as it will not only help the fabric hang neatly, but also protect it from fading, dirt and condensation. Thermal linings help retain heat, and can be as effective as double glazing, while blackout lining also blocks out light and some noise.

Blinds Once considered something of a poor cousin to curtains, blinds are increasingly fashionable, offering a clean-lined look that is sophisticated and laid-back yet still pleasingly tactile. What’s more, they tend to be far cheaper, as they require much less fabric – just the size of the window opening, plus hems. There are different options to suit different styles of room, many of them easy to make yourself or inexpensive to buy offthe-shelf. A roller blind in a neutral colour will blend into the background in a modern, minimal space, or could be used in conjunction with ‘dress’ curtains (fixed either side of the window) in a more formal room. GLOS DIRECTORIES | HOMES & GARDENS

Working from home I drink a lot more coffee these days. Three or four times a day I find myself in the kitchen spooning instant into a mug, whereas there used to be a time when my morning fix (three teaspoons for that great big wakeup jolt) was all the coffee I drank. It’s not that I’m a caffeine junkie: actually I’m on the decaf now. Much to nobody’s surprise, my Type 2 has arrived as an entirely proper consequence of years of eating and drinking far too much and doing far too little; and as caffeine (so my low-carb diet book informs me, whether trustworthily or not I don’t know) stimulates the production of insulin, I have switched to decaf. I can’t say that I can tell the difference. Nor am I a coffee snob. I’ve always drunk coffee in preference to tea, but only because when I was a teenager I read a book called “How to be Bond” which pointed out that James Bond always drank coffee, never tea, because while coffee was sophisticated tea was common. But I’ve always been fine with instant. One boss of mine would only ever drink “real” coffee, which smelt divine but didn’t taste as good as it smelt. Also, it’s such a faff, whether filter or cafetière, and the end result isn’t so much of an improvement as to justify the labour (to my palate at least). Of course, the real stuff comes out if we have guests round, but other than that the pot gathers dust on the topmost kitchen shelf and the coffee itself is many, many months beyond its best-before date. (And mind you, that same book pointed out that Bond never drank beer either, and for much the same reason. I was never tempted to follow this example and took

enthusiastically to beer long before I was actually allowed to. And anyway, I do drink tea now – I had a bad bout of bronchitis last winter and felt a sudden craving for sweet tea. Nothing could have been more soothing.) No, the reason why I drink so much more coffee nowadays is that basically I’m a lazy hound and always used to dodge the coffee round in the office by pretending that I didn’t want one. The downside of this was that I couldn’t sneak off and make myself a coffee when I actually did want one, so I did without. It’s not entirely laziness, though. Some of the offices I’ve worked in over the years have had kitchens of such unspeakable vileness that you wouldn’t want to go into them, let alone drink anything that came out of them. Washing up, in an office kitchen, is nobody’s job and so is never done. I well remember the kitchen at the old Morning Advertiser offices in Brixton. It crouched in a corner of what had been a huge printworks, all cavernous and echoing since the actual printing had been contracted out years before. But when the printers departed it seems they left their mugs behind, still half-full and never washed since, and all sprouting caps of foul grey mould like beards on corpses. Even the sign that said “please wash your own mug” was mouldy. I am not especially ticklestomached but I would never, in a million years, have put anything that came out of that hell-hole anywhere near my digestive tract. Anyway, one thing I have discovered to be true, although previously I’d pooh-poohed it, is that coffee tastes better if it’s not made with boiling water. So I think I’ll go and have one now. by Ted Bruning

Darling Books for May It’s time to crown the new May Queen and dance around the Maypole. Heavily rooted in the pagan and the celtic, celebrations are taking place across the land. This magical time of year is all about nature, fertility, tradition and folklore. Make yourself a daisy crown, sprinkle on some fairy dust and dance barefoot in the moonlight. Or failing that, find a patch of sunlight and let a book lead you on a merry dance… Lob, Linda Newbery The original inspiration for Newbery’s ‘Lob’ was a stranger she saw on her way to work; ‘the man who walks the roads’. Where was he going and where had he come from? This image, combined with those of the ‘green man’ in English Folklore who appears in carvings as a face amongst leaves and branches, lead to her to create her garden helper ‘Lob’. Lucy ‘s grandfather tells her about Lob and all the ‘Lob-work’ he does around the garden. You can only see him if you believe in him. It’s a beautiful and heart-warming children’s book which has great appeal for adults. The Most Amazing Places of Folklore and Legend in Britain: Where to Discover Our Living Heritage and Traditions, Readers Digest. If you’ve ever thought that Britain is lacking in tradition and folklore in comparison with our European neighbours, think again! This is a travel guide that will take you deep into the heart of the countryside and the legends that abound. From the solstice celebrations at

Page 42

Stone Henge to the yeti-like Beast of Bolam in the wilds of Northumberland, this is a land that’s teeming with folklore. Use this modern guidebook to take a step back in time and into a land that you may not recognise. Arthur, High King of Britain, Michael Morpurgo. This is the second children’s book we’ve selected but it’s a wonderful way for kids and grown-ups alike to hear some of the magical stories of King Arthur and his mystical round table. Michael Morpurgo’s tale begins with a boy, marooned on a sandbank with the sea lapping perilously close to him. He wakes up in a strange bed and finds he has a visitor: King Arthur himself. The legendary figure then recounts tales of Camelot, sorcery, knights on mighty steeds and betrayal. Prepare to be transported back in time. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William Shakespeare Mischief abounds in one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays which has three main,

interwoven plotlines. The story centres around the marriage of Theseus, The Duke of Athens, and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta and is set in woodland as well as the magical realm of ‘Fairyland’. One of the most memorable characters is undoubtedly the fairy court jester ‘Puck’ who dispenses his magical juice which, when sprinkled on your eyelids, means you fall in love with the next thing you see. This is one dream from which you won’t want to wake. The Heart of Robin Hood, David Farr. This is a brilliant reworking of the classic tale of the outlaw and his band of merry men. This time though, Robin and his men have grasped the idea of stealing from the rich, but have not yet signed-up to the principle of then giving it to the poor. It isn’t going down well with the poverty-stricken around Nottingham Forest. In David Farr’s adaptation, it’s Maid Marion who has to blaze the trail and convince Robin to follow his heart and not hold onto his swag, for the sake of the country.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival in 29th year! This year's Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes place on July 14-15 and promises to be as colourful and exciting as ever with plenty of entertainment, including a medieval surgeon, who will demonstrate some of the strange beliefs and practices that made up medieval medical care. There will also be story tellers, jesters, dancers, minstrels, travelling players, and maybe even a dragon or two. Children will find plenty to do and learn in our Bright Knight tent, whilst mum and dad check out our newest attraction this year, a medieval style skittle alley, or enjoy a traditional ale or glass of mead in our beer tent. Also new for this year is the chance to try some authentic medieval food, with a specialist caterer. There is a huge market with over a hundred stalls, from costumiers and armourers to sweet and trinket stalls. Many of traders are making and selling authentic copies of medieval artefacts.

happy to explain what they are doing. Then of course there is the battle re-enactment, with around 3000 warriors recreating the battle of Tewkesbury on part of the site of the original battle of 1471. The festival takes place on fields between Lincoln Green Lane and Lower Lode Lane, and is well signed from all the main entrances to the town.it opens at 11am on both days, with the official opening by our patron actor and historian Robert Hardy CBE, FSA at 12 on Saturday. The battle is at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. There is more entertainment around the precincts of the Abbey on Saturday evening. Entrance to the festival is free, with a small charge for parking, but donations to help with expenses are very welcome. For more information go to our web site www.tewkesburymedievalfestival.org

There are living history camps, with soldiers and their families living in complete medieval style for the whole weekend. They welcome visitors to their camps and are Page 44

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HOMES & GARDENS It may sound off-putting to release wasps into your greenhouse or conservatory (or mites come to that) but these little creatures are tiny and will not bite or sting: they are only interested in the pests. Biological controls, including those for slugs and vine weevils, are all tricky for garden centres to stock, as what you are buying are living creatures which won’t survive if left sitting on a warm shelf for too long. Mail order is therefore the best way to buy generally, with your predators or parasites arriving in the post along with strict instructions for storage (they should usually be kept in the fridge) and for using before the useby date expires. But don’t let this put you off: biological controls are excellent and are used by many professional growers. To ensure success you must follow the instructions precisely and make sure you introduce the control when there are a few, but not too many, pests around. If you wait until the air

is choked with whitefly it can be a bit too much of an uphill struggle for the tiny little wasps. But the great thing is that you can relax in the knowledge that you’re not jeopardising any wildlife and that, in many cases, the biological control becomes self-perpetuating as the ‘critters’ you have bought breed and spread within the greenhouse. Now that’s what I call useful.

Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and sign up for her newsletter (and receive a free ebook on organic gardening) and shop from the new products area which offers a great selection of biological controls (for slugs, vine weevils, red spider mite, whitefly etc) plus growing frames, cloches, raised bed kits and lots, lots more.

Everyday History Spectacles

It would be reasonable to imagine spectacles as a modern invention, so it may come as something of a surprise to note that Marco Polo, visiting China in 1270, observed elderly Chinese wearing them. On the basis of legend rather than fact, St. Jerome is credited with the invention, which takes us back to c.340-420 A.D. More substantive evidence however comes from the Roman writer Pliny, who recorded that the emperor Nero watched gladiatorial combat through an ‘emerald ‘, which has been interpreted to mean that he used some form of eyeglass. The first medical observation is recorded by Bernard Gordon, Professor of Montpelier, recommending “a collyrium of such potency that it will enable those whose sight is weak from old age to read without glasses.” A sermon of 1305 by Fra Giordano da Rivalto states “It is not yet 20 years that the art of making glasses was invented” but no person is identified as the inventor.

Page 50

Spectacle frames deserve a separate mention. The oldest recorded example from a painting by di Modena in 1352 shows two lenses in heavy rims joined centrally. The inconvenience of holding such heavy items in place led to experiments with leather rims, gold, silver, horn, wood and even fish-bone with one suggestion being that the glasses should be secured to the wearer’s hat. Until almost the middle of the 19th century the provision and fitting of spectacles was a service provided by untrained street vendors and choice was very restricted. Although corrective surgery and contact lenses are now available, glasses are still the most popular form of vision correction with custom prescriptions and a huge choice of styles.

TRAVEL

Bangkok Bangkok is dotted with nearly 400 fairytale temples, known as ‘wats’, the most magnificent rising on the banks of the Chao Phraya. Colourful, dazzling, they are among the top attractions in Thailand’s capital.

Riverside Temples

Here, monks meditate and study scriptures, medicine and astrology, tourists marvel at all the glitter and gold and the locals pray, read their horoscopes and chat with their friends. There are food stalls by the gate and on holy days, temple fairs where you can buy amulets and herbal remedies. Some temples are humble places haunted only by monks in saffron robes, others bustle with visitors. A few have a claim to fame, the highest dome, the largest bell, cloisters filled with the scent of jasmine or a 5½ ton Buddha of solid gold, hidden under a layer of stucco until it was dropped during transport in the 1950s. The Thais are devout Buddhists and most men, including the king, spend some time in the monkhood, whether a whole life or a few days. On the left bank of the Chao Phraya, the royal chapel is a stunning extravaganza of gold leaf, multicoloured mosaics and mythical creatures keeping watch in the courtyards, from fierce guardians with green faces to slender ‘garudas’, half-bird half-human. There are bell towers and spires, pavilions with upturned eaves, pagodas,

colonnades and white elephant statues believed to be lucky. High above it all, in a dedicated chapel, the small Emerald Buddha sits under a nine-tiered umbrella, carved from a single piece of jade and highly revered as he protects the kingdom. There is barely a whisper in the air but the chanting of monks echoes along the walls. The royal temple is close to the Grand Palace and three times a year, in a special ceremony, the king changes the Buddha’s robes to match the new season. Down river, Wat Po, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is the oldest and largest of the wats, a busy place where 300 monks mingle with visitors. The Buddha fills an entire hall, stretching for 140 feet, nearly 50 feet high, covered in gold leaf and mother of pearl incrusted in the soles of his feet in 108 auspicious designs. Regardless of faith, the Buddha touches your soul, totally serene as he approaches nirvana. Meanwhile, in the courtyards bristling with gleaming shrines, families picnic under the trees

or buy a caged bird to set it free, for a blessing, and tourists bargain for rubbings of temple carvings. As the seat of the country’s first university, Wat Po is also a reputed centre of learning and the best place in Bangkok to try traditional medicine or enjoy an authentic Thai massage. But across the river, Wat Arun is the most iconic of all. This is the Temple of Dawn, perfectly poised to reflect the early morning light from its lofty Khmerstyle tower. Rising some 220 feet above the water, it is covered in seashells and pieces of Chinese porcelain once used as ballast on incoming ships. Demons and monkeys guard the sanctuary while steep narrow steps lead up to the dizzying balcony overlooking the river, the palace and neighbouring temples. Once a year, the King sails down the Chao Phraya in full regalia to present new robes to the monks of Wat Arun after their traditional fast. The royal barge procession is said to be the most colourful festival in Bangkok. by Solange Hando
