Tewkesbury’s New but Unrecognisable Treasures This welcoming Tewkesbury Register headline dates from 1935! Both sides were to be disappointed since Newtown is an integral part of the town today. However, is an area full of post-war housing too ‘new’ to have history? James Bennett claimed that Newtown was first mentioned in 1749. However, it was certainly the attempt by an optimistic landowner to replicate Cheltenham’s success by opening Walton Spa in about 1835 which was the impetus to development. It failed and is now covered by ‘Wellfield’, but its conception coincided with the building of Walton House by the Smithsend family of Walton Cardiff in 1816. Between 1910 and 1935, it was owned by the Scobell family: granddaughter Barbara Cartland certainly stayed there. Many residents may well remember when it was a Children’s Home in the 1950s. GLOS DIRECTORIES | LOCAL HISTORY The failed Spa became part of Spa Farm which spawned the development of a dairy, owned by Harry Workman, which eventually moved to Tewkesbury as Cotteswold Dairy. When the business became too big for that site, Harry had the foresight to buy land on the other side the railway line in Newtown to set up one of the first industrial estates. It is ironic that housing has followed the factories to detract from the pioneering ideal.

However, Newtown started to become a dormitory housing development just before 1900 with the building of villas which still attract buyers. One of them, built in about 1894, but was first named ‘Mafeking’ with next-door known as ‘Pretoria’!

Harry Workman in 1938 with his brother-in-law Eric Brown (H. Workman)

A less obvious development was undertaken at the same time in what is now Newtown Lane. The owner was Nathaniel P. Milne of Ashchurch House (the site is now Alderman Knight School but his name is commemorated in Milne Pastures). There was space for 18 cottages built of “Iron and Galvanised Iron with a kitchen, 3 Bedrooms, a boxroom; outside: wash house, W. C., Coal House & Footpath”. This became known as ‘Tintown’ and only disappeared in the last two decades but I have never seen photographs of it – nor Marconi Cottages.

Land in Newtown has changed use over the past century. When you are enjoying a drink in the sunshine the garden of this public house (photograph on right), are you aware that, in World War II, it was the site of a POW camp first for Italians and then for Germans? One inmate,

Joachim Schulze, has written an account of his life in the camp and surrounding area to be published in Bulletin 21 of T.H.S. in March 2012. And what buildings have now obliterated this lovely meadow being enjoyed by Mr Gannaway and his dog? Sometimes the most valuable photographs for the historian are such innocent family photographs. We recently shared an evening concerning the History of Newtown in aid of the refurbishment of the Boys Brigade HQ. If you missed that, you can add to our knowledge by contacting me if you have any photographs or documents then we can finally show that Newtown was a welcome addition to Tewkesbury!

St David’s Day Stick a leek in your hatband, it’s St David’s Day! Maybe not as well-known as St Patrick’s Day or St George’s Day, but still a point in the rankings above St Andrew’s Day and hey, a party is a party, right? Now, I was brought up Roman Catholic, and although the Holy Office (the PC name for the Inquisition) would hardly recognise me as a kosher Catholic now, it’s still hard to shake off some of the attitudes. And as both a Catholic and an ex-Catholic I have always found it ironically amusing that the Welsh – by and large, as even they would admit, nonconformist – had such a devotion to a saint. They don’t believe in canonisation, for a start, and they certainly don’t share the monastic tradition; and David (son of the Prince of Powys and the Princess of Menevia) was not only canonised (in 1160 by Pope Callixtus II) but was also the Abbot of a large, aristocratic, and wealthy monastery. So, not exactly a Baptist role-model, then. Mind you, David himself would have had problems if interrogated by the Holy Office about his orthodoxy. He was born in about 500, just as the Saxons of Kent were being converted by St Augustine, and died by tradition on 1st March 589 (hence, celebrated on 1st March). By contemporary Roman standards his tonsure would have been all wrong, and he would have celebrated Easter on a date that would have horrified the Pope. In fact many of the tenets he would have adhered to were overturned by the Synod of Whitby in 664, when the old Celtic church pretty much capitulated to current Roman (and Saxon) practice. That makes him a heretic to just about everybody – contemporary Romans and subsequent nonconformists alike. To think, the Welsh defenders of early Christian tradition were, by comparison with their johnny-comelately Saxon oppressors, heretics. Ah well, that’s history for you. Full of ironies! But these were ironies that wouldn’t go away. Samuel Pepys, more than a

Page 10

millennium after David’s death, records that on 1st March there were annual street processions in honour of the Saint by dissenting London Welsh, aggressively opposed by protestant Anglicans; and in the 18th century Anglican London confectioners were satirising St David’s Day by producing gingerbread St David’s riding goats, known as “taffies” – hence our word “toffee”. The ironies continue even into our own time. St David’s stock, it is true, was not particularly high in the 19th and most of the 20th centuries when Wales was still largely Chapel. Only with the resurgence of less sharply denominational nationalism in the last 20 years has he been more widely adopted as a Welsh standard-bearer. In 2000 the Welsh Assembly voted to make 1st March a national holiday. In 2007, that notorious Catholic convert Tony Blair vetoed a bid to make it a Bank Holiday, despite 87% of the Welsh population being in favour. So: a proto-Catholic tells the culturally nonconformist Welsh that their sort-of Catholic but by the standards of his own times heterodox patron saint doesn’t merit a celebratory nationalist day off. Chew on that as you wish. I would rather chew on laver bread, bara brith, and (if you can find it) proper Welsh mountain mutton (a single leg of which, in my childhood, easily fed a family of seven at Sunday lunchtime with leftovers for Monday’s cottage pie). Washed down with a few pints of Brain’s SA from Cardiff or (again, if you can find it) Gwynt y Draig cider from Gwent. Or should that be Monmouthshire?

This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame flavoured noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to prevent them from burning under the hot grill.

Glazed Salmon Skewers with Sesame Noodles 4 x salmon fillets, skinned 6 tbsp teriyaki sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 250g packet medium egg noodles 2 tsp sesame seed oil 1 tsp grated root ginger 6 salad onions, trimmed and thinly slices 40g radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 2 tbsp sesame seeds 30ml honey, warmed

Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers.

TIP

To save time buy a small jar of ready prepared ginger puree rather than buying fresh root ginger – once opened it will keep in the fridge for a few weeks and is great for adding an Oriental flavour to rice and stir fries.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | GENERAL & COMMUNITY TECH SPEC

Hi-tech gifts for the gadget geek in your life Page 16

On the face of it, St Valentine and technology don’t have much in common, but that doesn’t stop gadget sites and shops from trying to persuade you that nothing says “I love you” like a pink USB vacuum cleaner. If you avoid the novelty stuff, though, there are plenty of great gift ideas - and very few of them are pink.

Gadgets they’ll love Some of the best ideas are the simplest, such as the Hi-Jack Double Headphone Sharer (£7): when you travel together you can both enjoy the same video or music. If you fancy getting really cosy while you do it, you could also invest in a Double Slanket (around £25), a twoperson version of the sofa snuggler - although we wouldn’t recommend buying one if your beloved cares about being cool (in the fashion sense) rather than toasty. Many gadget sites are stuffed with hilarious housework-related gifts, such as the Diva Washing Up Brush (around £6), and novelty items such as the Y-front shaped Hot Pants Hand Warmers (£5.95) although perhaps best passed by if you’d still like to be in a relationship on February the 15th. Tea lovers might appreciate the awfully named IngenuiTEA (£17), a clever infuser that delivers the perfect cup of tea from loose leaves of any description, while the LEDembedded Model Mirror (£15.99) is perfect for fixing eyeliner - or guyliner - when your partner’s out and about.

Glowing wine glasses (£6.99) can add a touch of fun to even the cheapest plonk, while another awfully named gadget - Le Whif - promises perfection: all the taste of chocolate without any of the calories. Its secret? You don’t eat the chocolate; you inhale it. It sounds bizarre but it does work, lots of online reviewers seem pleased with it and at just £5 for a three-pack it very affordable. If the object of your desire really loves chocolate you could always invest in a chocolate fountain (from around £33, widely available) although it’s worth remembering that once the novelty wears off, it’ll take up a lot of space as it gathers dust in a cupboard. If you’re old enough to remember the days of music on cassettes, you’ll know the power of a romantic mix tape - but while cassettes have gone to the technology graveyard, the mix tape lives on in the form of Suck UK’s superbly clever USB Mix Tape (£16.95).

It comes in six retro designs, looks like a tape and comes with an inlay card for scribbling your song titles in carefully drawn biro, but unlike your old C90s it offers pristine digital sound and 900 minutes of digital audio on the enclosed USB drive. If the thought of sharing your pop favourites with your partner fills you with fear, perhaps because you’re a Cliff fan and your beloved is more partial to Slipknot, then don’t despair: technology offers all kinds of personalised gifts. The “Your Life’s Theme Song” plaque (£54.95) is a framed CD or 7” single commemorating a special day, such as the day you met, featuring the UK number one single for that day, while U Star Novels (www.ustarnovels. co.uk) will happily insert your name(s) into a novel. With categories including romance novels, classics and, er, vampires, there’s a title to suit most tastes. Expect to pay around £24 to become Romeo and Juliet in Shakespeare’s play or to take a starring role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HEALTH & LIFESTYLE We all want to turn back the clock when it comes to our ageing skin, but finding ways to lessen the appearance of embedded lines and wrinkles can be hard. So, it’s important to take immediate action to look after your skin through a dedicated daily routine - that will prove to be effective, whatever your age.

Fresh Faced Whatever Your Age Prevention is better than cure, and thanks to the extensive range of products on the market designed specifically to delay and fight the signs of ageing - holding back the years might not be as hard as you’d think. It’s not just about products though, living a healthy lifestyle, eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out. And what’s more, remember to keep smiling - it’s an instant face-lift. After all, as fashion designer Coco Chanel famously said, ‘Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.’

In your late 20s and early 30s…

It might seem early, but it pays to establish a skin care regime that will aid in the prevention of visible ageing signs in later life. Remember to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, by using a specially formulated day cream that is guaranteed to safeguard your skin. Always cleanse, tone, exfoliate (image 1) and moisturise (image 2) to eradicate dull patches and ensure a healthy, youthful glow.

In your late 30s and early 40s….

Once you hit your mid thirties you may start to notice the earliest signs of ageing - such as laughter lines, frown lines or wrinkles around the lips. Use an eye cream (image 3) daily to treat and postpone the onset of fine lines around sensitive areas and select a richly moisturising night cream to keep both face and neck thoroughly nourished. It’s essential at this time in your life to commit to paying real attention to looking after your skin, so as to ensure it looks younger and more youthful in years to come.

In your late 40s and early 50s…..

Work on any established wrinkles with targeted products for your problem areas (image 4). Active anti-ageing ingredients are a must at this age, so look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants, retinol or peptides to protect your skin from free-radical damage. Brightening ingredients help to boost radiance and will improve the appearance of mature skin. Try both serums and creams to establish which works best for you.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HEALTH & LIFESTYLE In your late 50s and early 60s…

A dull complexion is common in your 60s. Owing to a build-up of dead skin cells due to the skin’s inability to renew itself, the surface can be left looking uneven and lifeless. So regular exfoliation is essential (image 5). Not only will this reveal fresher looking skin, but you will also be creating the ideal base on which to apply your anti-ageing products, ensuring they are absorbed deep into the layers of your dermis. Though be careful not to scrub or use an exfoliant that is too harsh, as this can damage thinning skin already suffering from a reduction in collagen and elastin fibres.

In your late 60s, early 70s and beyond…

As skin is much more demanding at this time of life, it can be hard to manage dry skin and the more established signs of ageing. It is essential to build on the routine you have established throughout previous years by continuing to spend time putting back what ageing takes out. Use intensive and targeted anti-ageing day creams and try face oils at night that will penetrate deep into the skin to provide much needed hydration (image 6).

Home-cooking key to slim success this New Year says local slimming expert A recent survey found that only one in four meals is home-cooked, yet a local slimming expert from Tewkesburry says it’s easy to create healthy and delicious dinners in your own kitchen and far more effective if you want to shape up this New Year. Rebecca, who runs a Slimming World group at the Wheatpieces, says: “Often people find it difficult to lose weight because they’re not confident in the kitchen or they’re just too busy to cook so they rely on takeaways and ready meals, which are loaded with salt and fat. They might be put off slimming because they think they won’t have the time to cook healthy meals from scratch. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated and lots of great classic meals are actually quick, simple and cheap to make at home.” Now a new book of all-in-one recipes from Slimming World proves her point perfectly with 100 mouth-watering meals that can be made easily in just one pot and they’re sure to become family favourites fast. The recipes in the Extra Easy All in One book include family favourites like Old-Fashion Shepherd’s Pie, Cheesy Vegetable Pasta Bake and Fast Fish Casserole which tick both of those boxes – they’re great winter warmers and great for the waistline!”

Top 5 Cars of the Tokyo Show This year’s Tokyo Motor Show was dominated by green technologies and wacky concepts – but among the madness there were some important model launches. The show isn’t one of the biggest. Spread over four halls you can get around it easily in a day – unlike the blister-inducing mass of motors that is Europe’s biggest show in Frankfurt, Germany. However, as the Japanese makers’ home event, it is absolutely packed with innovation. I spent two days scouring the halls and soaking up the culture, but eventually these five emerged as my picks of the show. Toyota GT 86 It’s about time Toyota got interesting again and the GT 86 certainly floats our boat. Rumoured to cost around £28,000 when it goes on sale in the UK, the rear-wheel drive car features a 2.0-litre 197bhp unit and will hit 60mph in seven seconds. It certainly looked good on the stand and was a welcome break from the green concepts doing the rounds everywhere else. Subaru BRZ Subaru has been having a hard time of it in the UK of late, so the BRZ comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air. Jointly developed with Toyota, it’s the sister car to the GT 86, and in the company’s famous corporate blue it looked fantastic. The BRZ has slightly different body panels and interior to the Toyota. Just don’t mention the new, and very bland, Impreza also on display on the stand... Nissan Juke Nismo The Juke has been crying out for a real sporty model and it looks like Nissan may finally answer our prayers thanks to its tuning arm Nismo. This is the first car that’s been given the Nismo treatment and although currently billed as a “concept” it’s highly likely we’ll see it on our roads soon. Exterior and interior tweaks will be matched with a breathed-on powerplant. Mercedes F 125! We’re not big fans of concepts that don’t mean anything, but Mercedes was quick to point out the F 125! showcases the future design direction of the next S-Class. The concept featured fuel cell technology which would give it a range of 1,000km, a lightweight body construction, gullwing doors and a cloud-based infotainment system. But ignore all that, it’s the looks that are most likely to shape future luxury barges from the firm. Hino eZ Cargo Tucked away in the corner of the truck section of the show was this fantastic delivery van. Not only does it look superb, but it showcases EV technology and a clean uncluttered design that would make Apple proud. A spokesman for Hino told us it has a range of 50kms, can charge in six hours and hit 70kph. Trials will take place next year before a decision is made whether to put it into production. We just hope the looks are carried over – it certainly beats a boring Transit. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HOMES & GARDENS Your home is not just the place that you keep your belongings and sleep at night. It is somewhere you feel safe and secure, and where you go to take a break from the outside world. So to be the victim of burglary is to suffer more than simply loss of your property and personal effects; it’s a violation of your sanctuary. Prevention is better than cure so put these measures in place before you are caught out.

Think like a burglar Think like a burglar

Stand outside your property and imagine that you were trying to break in. Where would you start? Flowerpot on the front step? Remove that not-so-secret key that’s underneath. Downstairs loo with the window that is always left open? Buy an air freshener instead! Full height ladder stored at the side of the house? It’s like a written invitation.

Security basics

It doesn’t matter how expensive your alarm system is or how strong your door locks are, if you don’t employ the most basic security measures you are just asking for trouble. As you leave the house or are preparing to go to bed, get into a routine of thinking about each room in turn and whether the windows or doors are likely to have been opened that day. Around 20% of burglaries don’t involve any force – the intruder has simply walked in the unlocked door or climbed through the window. You should extend this mental check to your car and garage too; easily overlooked because they are out of sight once you are indoors. Remember too that more break-ins happen during daylight hours, so vigilance then is every bit as important as night time.

Good locks = good security

Each of your windows should have a key locking mechanism fitted – standard with most double glazed units these days, and the key should be stored nearby but not within reach or visibility of the window itself. If you have nothing like this at the moment, and can’t afford to upgrade your windows just yet, make it a priority to have locks fitted on all the downstairs windows at least. Doors should have a good locking system such as an automatic deadlock or a mortise deadlock. Check too that the frame is solid and the glass panel is laminated.

Be flashy – but only with your security

80% of burglaries are spur of the moment so the only thing you should be showing off is your security measures. Don’t display your worldly goods to attract the opportunists in

Page 30

the first place. If you have an expensive bike keep it out of sight; don’t leave mobile phones on the windowsill; and don’t leave the empty box for your flashy new flatscreen TV standing by the bin for days. The same rules apply with your car. Don’t think that robbers don’t break in just to steal a handful of loose change. They do.

Tell-tale signs

When you are away from home, don’t leave the curtains drawn all day – nobody does that if they are in the house. Use inexpensive timer switches for table lamps and a radio to come on when it’s becoming dark, both downstairs and upstairs. And ask a friend or neighbour to move your post each day particularly where you have an outside box or you can easily see if the post is ‘on the mat’. These are all basic measures and will go a long way to ensure that your home and property stay safe.

Insuring Your Home Heating System, Hot Water and Electrics

We speak to Scott Johnston, MD of Johnston Scotia about two offers they have for you to improve your heating this spring. So far this winter has been relatively mild, which has been a blessing when you consider the ever increasing cost of household heating bills, boiler repairs and servicing. Do you sometimes get frustrated with your heating and hot water system? Would you like to guard against a boiler breakdown, or replace your old and inefficient heating system?

SHOULD I CONSIDER REPLACING MY OLD GAS BOILER? Boiler technology has advanced greatly in recent years and now boilers are able to deliver high levels of energy efficiency and reduce your bills whilst delivering more hot water and better heating.

SO HOW DO I TAKE UP THIS DEAL? Simply contact us for a free, no obligation quote to replace any gas boiler of any age and when you accept our quote you will benefit from a saving of £400 off the cost of the installation.

THERE WAS THE BOILER SCRAPPAGE SCHEME ADVERTISED A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, ARE THERE STILL DEALS LIKE THAT? The government sponsored scheme was only open to certain types of boiler and although successful came to a swift end because of limited funding. We have approached two boiler manufacturers to join us to set up an exclusive scheme offering a £400 Boiler Scrappage Discount with no restrictions when customers accept our quote for a new boiler until the end of this summer. SO W HAT CHOICE OF BOILERS ARE IN THIS SCHEME? We have two excellent brands that we have teamed up with to bring customers this offer. They are Viessmann, which is a German boiler manufacturer and Intergas from the Netherlands. Both of these companies have been making high efficiency condensing boilers in Europe since the 1980’s, both offer a 3 year product warranty which is extended to 5 years when the boiler is installed by Johnston Scotia. Both guarantee the heat exchanger of their boiler for 10 years. These boilers are rated over 90% for efficiency and designed to lower your heating bills.

Page 32

Some people see the annual service of a boiler as an unnecessary expense, but by skipping this important preventative maintenance the efficiency and life expectancy of your boiler can be greatly reduced and your fuel bills can rise. SCOTIACARE HOMEPLAN BOILER COVER The ScotiaCare HomePlan package has been designed with local customers in mind, it covers the boiler, heating & hot water system, radiators, external controls, pipe work, internal plumbing and home electrics all for only £7.99* per month for the first 12 months. The cost does rise to £16.99 for the next 2 years, but this is still excellent value for money when compared to other offers. The plan covers you for:

W HY SHOULD I TAKE OUT A SERVICE CONTRACT LIKE SCOTIACARE HOMEPLAN? We all rely on our heating and hot water to work on demand all year round; we tend to take it for granted. It always seems that problems occur just when you need your heating the most! The ScotiaCare HomePlan is designed to give you peace of mind and make sure your household, hot water, heating and electrics are maintained to give you that peace of mind. Without a contract like this you can soon see the cost of even a simple fault leading to an expensive bill for parts and labour and there is never a good time for one of those.

HOW DO I GET THE PEACE OF MIND THAT MY HEATING AND HOT W ATER WILL ALWAYS WORK WHEN NEEDED? By only offering this new product exclusively to local residents we are able to keep our overheads low and offer excellent value for money for our customers. Open Sesame Why have several small, dark rooms when you can simply knock down some walls and live in a gorgeous, airy, bright and huge space? But there are eight key issues you should bear in mind when decorating your open-plan home, says Katherine Sorrell 1. Creating a focal point While traditional rooms often work around a fireplace or TV, larger, multi-purpose rooms can lack visual focus. By introducing colour, pattern and/or texture on one wall – perhaps above a sofa or behind a dining table – you’ll add character, interest and even drama. The easiest solution is to use a strong paint colour or to hang a large painting, photograph or print, while boldly patterned wallpaper also works well.

2. Using colour Pale colours are generally considered best to emphasise the airiness of large open spaces. But should you go for one shade all over, or choose different colours for different areas? Using the same colour throughout gives an unbroken look and emphasises space, but if one end of the room is to function separately from the other – a living and dining space, a living and work space – you can zone these areas by varying their colour. A tonal scheme, with colour going from light to darker from one end to the other, can be particularly effective.

3. Planning your lighting Use lighting to delineate different areas within your open-plan space, and illuminate different parts to suit

Page 38

A comfortable seating area can be based around a rug and finished with oversized lighting. The Barletta collection, Marks & Spencer, 0845 302 1234; marksandspencer.com.

your needs, whether it’s a living area or working space, a kitchen or a dining area. Layer in different types of light in different areas, using a mixture of concealed lighting (in ceilings or under shelves, for example) and eye-catching, over-sized fixtures that suit the extra-large space.

4. Choosing a floor Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space such as an open-plan cooking/dining/living area can be tricky, as the kitchen area needs to be able to cope with splashes and spills, while you’ll want the sitting area to feel cosy and comfortable. You have two choices: either run the same flooring throughout for a sleek, flowing look, or choose a variety of types of flooring which will differentiate between areas. If you go for the former option, consider stone or wood, both of which can be softened with rugs where necessary, or consider high quality vinyl, which is spill-proof and forgiving underfoot.

5. Separating spaces Not all open-plan spaces need to be entirely open all of the time, so for truly flexible living it’s advisable to include some sort of flexible division. In a period property, panelled doors that can be folded back against the walls when not in use are perfect; in a more modern house a moveable screen, or perhaps ceiling-mounted panels (on a track) that can be pulled to one side when desired, would be enormously useful.

6. Linking spaces Open-plan kitchen/living areas are ideal for entertaining, but how do you successfully blend the spaces seamlessly? One solution is to continue the style of your kitchen units for storage used in nearby areas, choosing a design that looks as good for a TV stand, say, as for a cutlery drawer. Versatility is key and you should consider not just colour

but also texture, and even handles – long, slender handles tend to look better in modern living spaces than dumpy round ones, for example.

7. Solutions for storage Knocking two rooms together gives you a gorgeous open area – but, because you’ve lost wall space for cupboards and shelves, much less room to hide your clutter. One solution is to use tall, open shelving that doubles as a room divider as well as somewhere to display your stuff, while if you have a flat-screen TV, mount it on a media wall with storage for DVDs concealed behind it. In fact, make the most of every tiny corner, building storage into sloping ceilings, around windows or in any alcove you can find.

8. Buying and arranging furniture Conventional furniture won’t necessarily have the right proportions to work well in open-plan living areas, so you may have to look for larger-thanaverage pieces, and bear in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. Avoid the temptation to place all the furniture around the edges of the room (it will look like a nursing home); instead, create cosy sitting areas within the main space – with two sofas facing each other, with tables and lamps behind, perhaps, or else use modular furniture which creates sociable corners.

Sliding panels are designed to partition different areas. Leave the system closed to disguise clutter or pull it back to revert to openplan bliss. Prices start from £77.84, The Fabric Box, 0844 8118280; thefabricbox.co.uk. by Katherine Sorrell

Working from home Dad’s Taxis Some time ago I was ruminating in a slightly melancholy vein about what life would be like as empty-nesters. Would my wife and I be a bit sad? A bit lonely? Would we miss our little chickadees? Well, no we won’t. Because they’re NOT GOING! We always knew we’d be stuck with the boy, who has started tech. But what I didn’t realise (admittedly, because I never listen) is that he’s only going three days a week. Further, he’s studying music technology, so his homework seems to be very loud indeed. When I was his age I did try my best to make as much noise with my music as he manages with his, but since I was stuck with the discarded family Dansette while he seems to have the equivalent of The Who’s PA system I failed to make quite as much impact as he does. Also, the music of my teens was slightly more melodic than the thumpy stuff his generation favours – rock’n’roll may not be noise pollution, but dubstep most certainly is. Then we learnt that the girl isn’t going either. She was one grade off her first choice, but was offered a place for next year – yeah, that’s right, when the fees go up – and rather than settle for her second choice she decided to take a gap year. So, is she off backpacking around the Far East? No. She’s taking her gap year at home, that’s what. At least she’s not as noisy as he is, but we’re still lumbered with the pair of them. Well, I suppose it’s quite nice really, having them around the place. I’m kind of used to them,

in a way, and there’ll certainly be a big them-shaped hole in our lives when they finally do go. In the meantime, though, Dad’s Taxis is not going into liquidation, and the home laundry service remains as gargantuan an enterprise as ever. In fact Dad’s Taxis seems to be expanding. The boy is supposed to take a ludicrously early bus in the morning for his hour-and-a-half journey into college, which seems a ridiculous amount of time for a 20-mile trip. Not surprisingly, he doesn’t always make it, and as he has to be there by 9am, that means the dog is still waiting to be walked by the time the taxi-driver arrives back. So that’s an hour off the working day for starters. In her case, it’s job interviews. Although the town I live in has some 30,000 souls it doesn’t seem to have anything in the way of facilities, not even a job centre. Nor does it have any buses, or at least none of them seem to go where we want them to, and the timetables appear to have been devised by someone who thinks that while everybody wants to flee the town, nobody wants to come back. Or not on the same day that they left, at any rate. So it’s Dad’s Taxis to the rescue, and more hours lopped off the working day. When my generation came to this point in our lives, we were simply taught to drive and bought an old banger (a pale-blue Ford Anglia, in my case). But things have changed, and not for the better. We took one look at how much it would cost to insure them to learn to drive with us and turned deathly pale. And that’s before paying for driving lessons (that’s the drawback with twins – double bubble!) and then insuring them once they pass. You’d have to be a millionaire. And we’re not. So Dad’s Taxis it is. by Ted Bruning

The British Countryside Our British countryside is teeming with life this time of year. To save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a back-garden safari. British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography) AA Publishing Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured. RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack.

Page 44

Bugs Britannica Peter Marren and Richard Mabey Determined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepycrawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the fly-spray this summer. British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook Camilla de la Bedovere. This is the ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the back-garden and

beyond. Children will love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife. A Kestrel for a Knave Barry Hines If you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.

Not released until June 2012 Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife If you are opting for a ‘staycations’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’. Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

GLOS DIRECTORIES | HOMES & GARDENS Some sweet pepper plants can get quite tall and rather ungainly so be ready to give them a bit of extra support if necessary. A stout bamboo cane will usually do the trick, and tie the plant in loosely with twine, string or any other soft garden tie. If you’re after the hottest possible heat from your chilli peppers, then you’ll find this comes from fruits that are totally ripe, and that that ultimate heat is most likely to be achieved from peppers grown on plants that are grown in warmer conditions. So, if your plants are going to be looking gorgeous on your patio over the summer, make sure you put them somewhere extra warm – perhaps a sunny porch or window sill for that last bit of ripening time in the autumn. For sweet peppers, if you are growing them in patio pots in a sunny spot then you are likely to find that there are still some unripened fruits on the plants when temperatures start to fall at the end of summer and well into autumn. To increase the chances of these ripening and increasing to full size, move the pots to a warmer spot or, if possible, to a porch,

conservatory or greenhouse where they’ll get extra warmth and also plenty of natural light. If you want chillies that look particularly good on the patio there are plenty to choose from. ‘Black Pearl’ is a hot chilli pepper with a distinct blackish tinge to the mature leaves and fruits that are black early on and mature darkest red. For classic chillis with bright red, finger shaped fruits try ‘Thai Dragon’.

Herb of the Month - Thyme As a native of the Mediterranean region, thyme grown in this country needs to be in a sunny spot. Like many herbs it is easy to grow and is better in poorer, dryer soils as moist, nutrient rich conditions will cause it to lose its compact shape. Even given ideal conditions, thyme will start to be become woody after a few years and will produce fewer leaves. When the plant reaches that point it is best that it is divided and replanted. Thyme is both pretty and aromatic so is ideal at the front of a border, particularly where passers-by will brush against it. However its flowers do attract bees and butterflies so take care not to let it overhang the path too much. In general thyme is best in strong flavoured dishes, particularly anything with red meat. It is ideal in soups, casseroles and stocks as it is one of the few herbs in cooking which can be added early because it doesn’t lose its flavour when cooked for some time. Lemon thyme has a mild lemon flavour and is fine with chicken. Thyme from the garden can be used all year round although obviously there is little growth in the winter months so you have to take care not to over harvest it. If you have an excess in the summer, the herb can be both dried and frozen for out of season use. The fresh leaves are much more pungent than dried ones though so use it sparingly. TRAVEL

Madeira means ‘wood’, a name given to the island by the first Portuguese settlers in the 15th century, though they promptly burnt as much of the forest as they could to create arable land. Today the trees are back, 900,000 of them planted in the past decades, and as you approach this rugged but fertile island, dizzying slopes greet you with lush terraces where mango and banana groves compete with vineyards, passion fruit and papaya trees. Pretty as a postcard, Funchal, the capital, is a neat maze of tree-lined avenues with mosaic pavements, shaded squares and outdoor restaurants sweeping around a glistening bay. On these south-facing slopes, life is relaxed and there’s time to wander around the farmers’ market, the steep lanes draped in wisteria, the marina, or look out for the Beatles Boat turned into a restaurant, the statue of Zarco, the explorer who first set foot on the island, or that of Christopher Columbus who married a local girl. Some 2000 feet above the sea, the leafy suburb of Monte offers superb views, fragrant gardens and an iconic church where on August 15th, penitents go up the steps on their knees. Visitors prefer the cable-car but the fun way down is the toboggan, Madeiranstyle, careering down the slope in a giant wicker basket, swung right and left by two handsome guys in white gear and straw hats. Just 36 miles by 14 miles in the Atlantic, closer to Africa than to Portugal, the motherland, this little gem of an island is surprisingly varied. All along the coast, rocks and cliffs tower dramatically above small pebble beaches pounded by the ocean. Experienced surfers head north to ride the

Madeira

waves but Funchal has gentle options, from coastal and dolphin-watching trips to a romantic twilight cruise on Santa Maria de Colombo, a stylish replica of Christopher Columbus’ boat. Others sail around the Desert Isles, home to wild goats, seals and thousands of sea birds while the ferry sets off for the more distant sister island of Porto Santo and its five miles of golden sands. Back on the main island, small towns and villages are scattered along the shore, Camara de Lobos with its fishermen’s chapel and wooden boats, Calheta and its sugar plant making ‘firewater’, Porto Moniz with its bathing pools hollowed out of an old lava flow or Machico where Zarco is said to have landed. Not so far away, Torch Mountain recalls the great bonfires of the past, warning of approaching pirates, while the world’s second highest sea cliff, Cabo Girao, rises to a staggering 1900 feet and the

windswept eastern peninsula stretches into the ocean, shared by the occasional lizard and a handful of seasoned walkers. Walking on Madeira is exhilarating and pleasant year round. Popular footpaths follow the levadas, the ancient irrigation channels still used to bring water from the humid but sparsely inhabited north to the rich farmlands of the south, with a network of over 800 miles. There are leisurely trails through the ancient laurel forest of the National Park covering two thirds of the island, past gurgling streams and waterfalls, picnic spots and panoramic ‘balconies’ suspended between heaven and earth. But most challenging of all is the mountainous interior and the fabulous but headspinning hike from Pico de Areiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak towering above a dramatic moonscape at over 6000 feet. by Solange Hando
