From the Editor

Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, It’s that time of the year again, with schools out for Summer! Six weeks of wondering what we can do to keep the children happy and entertained… fortunately we have a great What’s On section for you towards the back of this magazine for some ideas of days out and events – and keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we’ll be adding more as they come in to us. On the 9th of July in Tewkesbury we see the return of the biggest free medieval re-enactment and fair in Europe. Tewkesbury’s Medieval Festival boasts amazing markets, crafts, pottery, food, drink, jesters, dancers and musicians. The Abbey Gatehouse will also be open to the public on the 9th and 10th. Finally, “Hell hath no fury like a woman in pink”, so good luck to the thousands of ladies taking part in two events for Race for Life at the Cheltenham Racecourse on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July. I hope you have a fun, busy but also relaxing July, until next month! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Richard Denny Your Success Coach The media have called Richard Denny ‘The Millionaire Maker’. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world.

Ten Tips for Motivational Management - Use the Power of Praise Every recruitment agency in the land will agree that by far the major reason for people leaving an employer is due to not feeling appreciated or valued. Let me remind you of that powerful phrase, “people don’t leave companies, they leave people.” I equally believe, and my experience has shown, that this lack of appreciation is one of the major causes of high absenteeism that some in the private sector, but many more in the public sector, do suffer from. Why are so many managers unable, unwilling or simply forget to say a thank you and show appreciation to their staff? It’s just not good enough to have the pathetic mindset of believing “that is what they are paid to do.” This lack of appreciation is very rarely uncovered or disclosed at the exit interview. Apparently the British psyche does not handle praise well. But praise and recognition are fundamental and vital leadership skills and qualities. So if you want to keep your people, staff and colleagues; help them to be more competent; increase productivity and create a happier working environment; positive constructive input and loyalty; praise and care for your staff. After all, they are your customers, so follow these tips: 1. Praise in public, criticise in private. Let other people hear you giving praise. You will get more of whatever you recognise, reward or praise. 2. Understand the individual. Some people need more praise than others. Some people have great difficulty in receiving praise. 3. Be authentic. The praise must be yours even though it may have been told to you by someone else. It must be owned by you and believed by you. If the praiseworthy event is related to you from another source get your facts right, but again take

ownership of the praise, while giving recognition to others. 4. Deliver praise with sincerity, with eye contact, with pleasure and with happiness. You know body language communicates more powerfully than the spoken word. 5. Be timely. Yes, of course some praise is better late than never but really make the effort to give it as near to the event as is humanly possible. It just depends on where praise lies in your priority of life. 6. The recipient really must deserve the praise and the event must also be praiseworthy. 7. Praise should also be geared to the impact of the actions that were deserved. In other words, you are sharing the ramifications of the success that is forthcoming from the praiseworthy activity. 8. Praise will change behaviour, meaning you will get more of whatever you are praising and recognising, so be careful. If you praise people for working long hours you will get more people working long hours, but this may not be productive and is generally unproductive. 9. Get the balance right. Too much praise is completely ineffective. Can you recall old Mr Grace from the TV programme Are You Being Served saying “You are all doing very well”, every time he met his staff. 10. Be brave. Step outside your comfort zone. Give a little praise and enjoy.

Cake and Bake Chocolate Mousse Brownies Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert!

Ingredients: BROWNIE BASE • 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour

MOUSSE TOPPING • 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate

Makes 12 Ready in 1hour 30mins plus cooling and chilling

TIP

Add a few drops of mint extract to the chocolate mousse mixture for an after dinner mint flavour. Page 8

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/Gas 4.

Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2. Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large

heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.

3. Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate

mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until just firm to the touch - it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

4. To make the mousse topping, melt the milk

chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk.

5. Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl

until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

The Abbot’s Table is situated in the heart of the beautiful Tudor town of Tewkesbury, not far from the Abbey. It has recently been refurbished and is a wonderful find.

Cheese and Spinach served with a crisp salad and the locally sourced Lamb cooked to perfection with a great selection of seasonal vegetables and meltin-the-mouth Dauphinoise Potatoes.

The family-run establishment looks back at many years of catering and hospitality experience, so a warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed.

To end off a perfect meal, we enjoyed the homemade Salted Caramel Ice Cream and the Vanilla Cheesecake.

The mouth-watering menu has a modern, European twist and whatever your preference you can be confident that everything from the breads through to the ice creams is homemade, using - wherever possible - locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

The portion size was good and excellent value for money.

The ‘Specials’ menu changes on a daily basis depending on the produce of the day and can be readily adapted to cater for food intolerances and allergies. Local fitness instructor, Joey Jones, and I were recently invited to dine at The Abbot’s Table. The interior is beautiful. Hand-painted walls, designed by a Cheltenham-based artist, depict Tewkesbury's mediaeval landmarks and soft candlelight sets you into "switch off" mode. We ordered the Deep Fried Brie with Cranberry Sauce and the plump and juicy Garlic Prawns on Bruschetta, both were absolutely delicious. To follow we had the Tortellini filled with Ricotta

The Abbot’s Table offers a two course lunch for £11.95 and three courses for £15.95, or why not try their Sunday Lunch Menu? It costs the same as during the week and comes with a great range of dishes to choose from. Booking is essential as their Sunday Lunches are incredibly popular! They have a varied wine list and well-stocked bar for your favourite tipple. Soft beverages are also available. I would highly recommend that you visit The Abbot's Table and support a fantastic local business. - Written by Harriet Court from Glos Directories As a welcome gesture Emilia and the team would like to offer you 10% off your food bill when mentioning the Tewkesbury Magazine.*

Did you know? The name Tewkesbury comes from Theoc, the name of a Saxon who founded a hermitage in the 7th century where Tewkesbury is now. In the Old English tongue Tewkesbury was called Theocsbury.

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning the attention and all the gongs. Only after Hurst was knighted did the press, fans, and fellow players get behind a campaign to honour the rest of the team.

The Queen presents the 1966 World Cup to England Captain, Bobby Moore

Absolutely no prizes for guessing which glorious golden anniversary we’re celebrating this month. What, you need a clue? Some people are on the pitch – they think it’s all over – it is now! Yes, of course you knew... 30th July 1966 was undoubtedly the greatest day in our sporting history, when more than 30 million people worldwide saw England beat Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup for the first and only time. So far. The story of the game, and especially of England’s disputed third goal, is too well-known to go into here. But a campaign launched by the Daily Mirror in January this year to mark the anniversary by knighting all the surviving members of the team (except hat-trick hero Geoff Hurst, who is a knight already) stirs the dusty memory of an investiture conducted by the Queen 16 years ago. Somehow, in the immediate aftermath of the game, the Charlton brothers Bobby (OBE 1969, knighthood ‘94) and Jackie (OBE ‘74), goal-scorers Hurst (MBE ’75, knighthood ‘98) and Martin Peters (MBE ‘78), captain Bobby Moore (OBE ‘67), and goalkeeper Gordon Banks (OBE ‘70) captured all Page 12

So it was that on 7th March 2000 the “forgotten five”, as they were nicknamed, turned up at Buck House to receive the MBEs they’d been awarded in the New Year’s honours. Full-backs Roger Hunt and Ray Wilson, midfielders Alan Ball and Nobby Stiles (both of whom, unusually for midfielders of the time, were only 5’ 6”), and striker George Cohen had all made vast contributions, not just to victory in the final but also to the campaign leading up to it, which were at long last being acknowledged and rewarded. But what became of those lesser-known lions after Nobby Stiles’s famous post-match victory dance, dentures in one hand and Jules Rimet trophy in the other? Of the five only the youngest, Alan Ball (21 at the time), went on to enjoy what you might call a stellar playing career; not because he was a better player than the others but because only his career extended into the era when footballers became media celebrities. He scored 187 goals in 833 club games spanning 23 years and represented England in the 1970 and ‘74 World Cups. His top-flight career included 72 caps (six as captain) and lengthy spells at Blackpool, Everton (League Champions 1969-70), Arsenal and Southampton. His 15 years in management were less successful and he retired in

1999, dying in 2007 of a sudden heart attack. Of the others, Hunt was arguably the most successful, scoring 286 goals for Liverpool (one of them, against Arsenal in August 1964, being the first ever shown on Match of the Day), 24 for Bolton, and 18 for England. After retiring from football in 1972 he went into the haulage business. Fellow full back Wilson made over 400 club appearances in 20 years, for Huddersfield, Everton, Oldham and Bradford, before quitting football to become an undertaker. Cohen was a Fulham stalwart for 13 years and earned 30 England caps; he was forced into retirement by injury in 1969 and enjoyed a successful career as a coach at his old club. Stiles’s career followed a similar path: after 11 years at Manchester United he spent two seasons at Middlesbrough and then two at Preston under his old teammate Bobby Charlton. His playing career was also ended by injury and he also returned to his old club as youth coach where he trained, amongst others, Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Butt, and the Neville brothers.

In honour of the above, this month’s birthday boys are all ex-international footballers.

Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Enrico Annoni (1st), Minas Hantzidis (4th), Gianfranco Zola (5th), Owen Coyle (14th), and Martin Keown (24th).

Pre Flight Checks Pilots check their aircraft before take-off. Do you do the same with your car before driving-off? Whether it’s your car, a friend’s, your company’s or even a hire car, when you’re the driver, it’s down to you to make sure your transport is legal. So, before driving off, consider conducting a “preflight check” prior to entering the vehicle and a “cockpit check” when in it. A simple walk around the car, checking the bodywork and tyres is all that is required - it takes seconds but could save you time and trouble. Just prior to writing this piece, I noticed a parked car with an almost flat near-side

front tyre. If the driver of that car approaches the driver’s door directly and hops straight in, they would miss that flat tyre and probably only be aware of it when on the road, meaning they will need to do a risky roadside wheel change. Do you regularly check your lights? Making sure your lights work, and knowing how to check them, is now part of the driving test. It’s simple to do and could save you from missing something at night, or someone driving into the back of you. You’ll avoid getting points on your licence too. The same goes for a regular check of your wipers, and please don’t wait until they make the windscreen smeary to see through. Think what you might miss in the rain if your wipers aren’t up to the job. Perhaps a child crossing the road? A quick bi-weekly check on these items will make sure all is well.

Marinated Pepper Platter Serves 6 as starter or part of buffet

Ready in 1 hour, plus marinating

A really summery platter of grilled peppers with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella pearls. Make a day in advance and chill in the fridge until required. Serve with crusty bread for a simple starter or as part of a summer buffet.

Ingredients: • 6 mixed red, yellow and orange peppers • 1 x 280g jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil • 2 x 125g tubs mozzarella pearls, drained • 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tbsp balsamic oil • Handful fresh basil leaves, shredded

TIP Instead of mozzarella try another cheese, such as crumbled feta or slices of Brie or Camembert. Page 16

Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skinside up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7-8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can. Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly chop the sun-dried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Serve garnished with the shredded basil leaves.

Step 3: Then check insurers that comparison sites miss Now you’ve a price benchmark, let’s try to smash it. Big insurers www.Aviva.co.uk and www. DirectLine.com are not included by comparison sites, so check them too.

Comparison sites also tend to miss out special promo deals that insurers offer, so it’s worth checkcoversing your out if there are any of these as r, which well. In a recent poll I did, 78% of customers who haggled with Direct Line said they had success, while 81% did with Admiral and 80% with Hastings Direct. So it’s worth a try. As Pat Olver tweeted me: “@ MartinSlewis Sainsbury’s home insurance renewal £252. Same policy on confused was £186. Rang Sainsbury’s, talked them down to £181.” Step 5: If you’re moving, once you know what you’re getting, check for cashback Once you know your cheapest policy and, crucially, you’ve checked IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, then see if you can earn cashback using a cashback site such as www.Topcashback.co.uk or www. Quidco.com. These sites pay you if you click through them.

This usually works, but there can be tracking issues, so see this as a likely added bonus and always check ensure you’re getting the right policy. If you’ve got time and your top three policies are all much of a muchness, it can be worth seeing the cashback on offer for all three. And a final word of warning, beware paying monthly, it’s actually just a loan. In effect, the insurer pays upfront then loans you the cash, sometimes at hideous interest (e.g., Endsleigh’s 39.7% APR). If you can’t afford to pay upfront, check the APR. If it’s high, you’re often better on your credit card, or, better still, get a 0% credit card (just ensure you pay it off within the year). Water, Water Everywhere by Pippa Greenwood

With summer well under way, gardens will need more water than the rain is giving them, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, wait until the autumn to plant out trees, shrubs and climbers – it will be far harder for them to establish properly now and they are more likely to suffer serious setbacks. However, if you can’t avoid planting, improve the soil texture by digging and forking in plenty of garden compost, well-rotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture – sandy soil will then hold water more effectively whilst clay soil is less likely to crack. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and means you will spend far less time watering later on. It is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth

which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Mulching will also help to keep down weeds.

always water in the evening or extremely early in the morning, which drastically reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation, and means that there is far less chance of foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight.

In drier areas of your garden, try to use drought tolerant plants. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now.

Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return a few minutes later - you will find that the water penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface is likely to lead to a lot of run off and wastage.

Make the most of any rainfall by fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage, and divert the rain straight into one or more water butts. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. Unless there’s no alternative,

Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to safely control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, biological controls, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Tewkesbury Talk "Hot July brings cooling showers, apricots and gillyflowers." - Sara Coleridge, Pretty Lessons in Verse And so we welcome summer and hope that July brings us the long hot days we always crave, then complain that we are too warm! Summer is the season of holidays, festivals and tourism. It is noticeable that our ‘second population’ has moved back over the past few weeks - those who choose to come to Tewkesbury to stay in their caravans and on their boats year on year. It is lovely to see familiar faces again and to catch up on family news. It is also the time when our little town becomes a riot of colour with the floral displays of Tewkesbury in Bloom. Judging will be on the 6th of July and will take a different route to the normal one this year, with the last part of the judge's tour at Victoria Gardens where the Heart and Soul Choir will be singing at around 11.30am. I will try to get down to hear them and I hope to see lots of people there enjoying the delights of the gardens. Combine the floral displays with the beautifully painted battle banners, hung in readiness for the MedFest weekend of 9th and 10th July, and

the result is stunning! There are actually more banners this year than ever before due to the high demand. Jack Banners going up Boskett’s Picture by Shelby Powell picture of Church Street shows how well the banners and blooms go together. The festival will once again see a Grand Parade on Sunday 10th July. It will start in Quay Street at 11.15am and proceed to Lower Lode Lane and the main festival site. There will be lots of community groups and schools from Tewkesbury and the surrounding villages and it promises to be quite a spectacular event. Even if you don’t get to see any of the activities on the main site it is worth coming along to see the parade of knights and serfs, maids and musicians and all manner of fabulous creations, it's certainly something I am looking forward to. As I write this article, I am looking forward to going to the ‘We Salute You’ concert in the George Watson Hall, sponsored by local firm CB Chartered Accountants, with music by the Crescendo Big Band to commemorate Armed Forces Day and raise funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. I am

taking my mum and dad along as they will surely enjoy the singalong and flag waving. My mum also came with us to the recent Mayor’s Garden Party held in the Town Hall and gardens. The event was sponsored by Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts and was raising funds for the Mayor’s Charities. We enjoyed strawberries and cream on the lawn while listening to the very entertaining Friends Ukenited and Amy Round. We learnt about lots of local interest groups and capped it off with a great tour around the Town Hall guided by the Town Sergeant, Mike Kean-Price. There are working cannons in the council chamber, who would have known! Apparently they were originally used to start the Tewkesbury Regatta – this is something that would be great to be reinstated.

scones and doing the washing up. The rain held off for the majority of the event too! Earlier in the month, Tewkesbury Nature Reserve held an Open Day to show off the progress that has been made in making this a haven for local wildlife. The Town Mayor, Karen Brennan, was there to officially open the new bridge at the Nature Reserve which links Stonehills to Wheatpieces.

The picture shows Karen with Wheatpieces Parish Council chair Jennifer Abel and Larry Blacker, warden. It was a well-attended event which was giving everyone an opportunity to find out what's on offer at the Nature Reserve. There was plenty of information available with many hands-on activities, including a nature trail, pond dipping, willow weaving, bird spotting and a bat walk. For fourlegged friends there was a dog show organised by Rachel Butler of the Happy Dog Company. The organisers of Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend have had their presentation evening following this year’s successful event and were able to donate £750 to the Avon Navigation Trust, £750 to Macmillan, £750 to the Tewkesbury Town Mayor’s Charities, £750 to Tewkesbury Boys Brigade, £351.60 to The Cheltenham Animal Shelter, £162.50 to the Marine Volunteer Service and £162.50 to Tewkesbury Town Colts. This was another great achievement by a volunteer group.

July sees lots of activities with the Medieval Festival featuring a wide range of period entertainment, including music, drama and dance as well as a collection of fascinating characters from the past. All is provided free of charge, although a small fee may be charged for parking. On 27th July, there is a kite making workshop for children at the Tewkesbury Heritage Centre which will allow participants to build and paint their own kite from scratch. Sessions take place between 10am and 12 noon and 1pm and 3pm (children must be accompanied by an adult). The cost is £5 per child. Then on Saturday 30th July The Farmers Arms at Apperley are holding their annual Appfest, featuring a host of great tribute bands. The event starts at 11.30am and tickets cost £25 per person with funds being raised for the Winston’s Wish Charity, Cheltenham. On the same weekend, running from 29th July to 31st July, is the Livestock Longdon Festival. Camping will be available on site and headline acts include The Fratellis, Reef, Jason Donovan, Reverend and the Makers and Chesney Hawkes. With all that going on there is certainly no excuse to be bored this summer! At Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts we are also doing our bit to provide entertainment. Following on from the successful live painting event at our opening, Sam Morris, Cow Artist from Twyning, is going to be live painting in our shop window on Saturday 2nd July. This time she will be painting a picture of Tewkesbury and would welcome input and suggestions as to what it should include, so if you have a favourite place in Tewkesbury, or maybe an event that you would like included then why not let her, or us, know. Either pop into the shop beforehand or message us, or Sam, on Facebook. Better still, come along on the day and have a chat with Sam herself, all suggestions

considered. The lovely Liz and Nigel at Café au Chocolat are also joining the fun. They have a special Sam Morris Cow shape to add cow sprinkles to your coffees. A few other notable dates for your diary include the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th July when historical guided walks of Tewkesbury take place (start at 7pm). Meeting point is at the Abbey Gates (opposite the Bell Hotel), and admission is £4 for adults and £1 for children. On 9th July the Farmers and Craft Market will return to the Abbey Lawns Car Park in Gander Lane, and the 14th of July will see a Guided Walking Tour of Tewkesbury Battlefield which will start at 7.30pm and lasts about 2 hours. Meeting point is at the Crescent. On 30th July, there will be a Food & Arts Street Market in the High Street which will be open from 9am to 5pm. Right, I am off to get ready for my night out at the Watson Hall, and to make some posters for our painting event, but I cannot go without giving a mention to a new business in town - Flowers Buttons and Bits. The shop in St. Mary’s Lane is the latest addition to the independent shop community and was opened by Mayor Karen Brennan. Shop owner Kate Mason has a lovely range of flowers and gifts on offer and caters for all your floristry needs.

July - Time to give yourself a break by Louise England Summer is here and regardless of the weather there is a feeling of end of term, holidays and the opportunity to take life at a slower pace. What I recommend for July is to stop and take a break from the usual clutterclearing and home organisation activities. Let this be your month of indulgence. This does not mean eating your body weight in chocolate or not moving from the sofa! Take it to use your time how you really want to. Make that new dish you’ve been dreaming about (honeycomb ice cream is on my list). Open the book you’ve been wanting to read and get stuck into it. Dig out your favourite old tracks and crank up the volume. Spend time outside – meet up with friends for picnics in the park or put up your tent in the garden and spend a night out under the stars. Allow yourself the time to listen to what you really want – what your body and mind are asking for. And do this all guilt-free, this is your month. Take time to count your achievements so far this year, and celebrate the victories, no matter how small they seem. This space and time will also allow your brain to think about what you’d like to accomplish during the second half of the year. As thoughts pop into your head, write them down and then pull this list out in September when it’s time to sharpen the pencils and crack on again. Louise England is a Lifestyle and Home Assistant. Hobbies Keep Calm And Get Colouring By Kate McLelland

Close your eyes and think back to the simple pleasures of childhood: a rainbow box of crayons on the table and, beside it, a book of illustrations just waiting to be coloured in. Remember the intense concentration as you filled in the blank spaces with your favourite shades of yellow, red, purple, green and blue? Now fast-forward to the present day, when high-tech gadgets and gizmos allow us to create sophisticated and brightly coloured designs with just a few mouse clicks. Such innovations should have consigned the humble crayon to the dustbin of history, so it’s amazing to learn that in the second decade of the 21st century one of the most popular hobbies is adult colouring. It has become a global phenomenon, spreading to countries as diverse as Brazil and New Zealand. In fact the interest is so great that the world’s largest wooden pencil manufacturer, Faber-Castell, has been forced to increase shifts at its German factory in order to keep up with demand. Printers and booksellers have also seen a stratospheric rise in the popularity of colouring

books created for the adult market. Millie Marotta’s Animal Kingdom, Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden (now translated into 14 different languages) and Emma Farrarons’ The Mindfulness Colouring Book feature high on the UK’s bestseller lists. Mindfulness, with its emphasis on being aware of the present moment, fits particularly well with this hobby because colouring is essentially a repetitive, undemanding activity that can be used to focus the mind. Colourists claim that their hobby can lead to a calmer, almost meditative frame of mind and this view is supported by clinical psychologist Dr David Holmes: “With our workaholic culture, we spend most of our lives in ‘beta mode’, which is when we’re alert, problem-solving, decisionmaking. By actively altering the preponderance of certain brain patterns, you can shift into ‘alpha mode’, which is more like the state of mind we have as children. Meditation and similar techniques require learning and practice, whereas anyone can just drop into colouring-in.” Colouring may seem like a solitary pastime but it can also become a social activity: in

recent years colouring clubs and parties have proved popular, particularly in America and France. The Ladies Coloring Club is a Facebook Group based in the US which links to groups around the world. Alternatively you could start your own group like 38year-old Suzanne Parsonage from Bristol, who launched a colourists group from her local pub. Many local libraries also host adult colouring sessions. If you are eager to try colouring for yourself but don’t want to invest in a book of illustrations just yet, go online and download some free printable pages. You’ll find some great library printables at www. pinterest.com that will help you decide whether adult colouring is for you. If you are feeling that this hobby is a little too childish, you’ll be relieved to hear that a recent article in Director magazine identified a growing trend amongst business leaders who have taken up colouring in order to alleviate stress. So grab a box of crayons or felt-tips and make a start. It seems there’s every reason to add a little colour to your everyday life - and all you need to worry about is keeping within the lines!

Steam in the Malvern Hills

WELLAND STEAM & COUNTRY RALLY July 29, 30 & 31 2016

If you are looking for the perfect day out for the family this summer, look no further than the Worcestershire village of Welland, which hosts the annual Steam and Country Rally. Welland is situated between Malvern and Uptonupon-Severn with easy access to the M50. The postcode for Sat Navs is WR13 6NG. 2016 sees the 52nd event and the organisers are pulling out all the stops to ensure that the rally will be up to the usual high standard. The event is organised by the Ross-onWye Steam Engine Society, whose members give all their time voluntarily to put on what is now regarded one of the biggest and best events of its type in the country. A mixture of nostalgia, sights, sounds and a terrific atmosphere await you at Welland. The event is special in that you can see steam engines performing the tasks they were built for in the years leading up to the Second World War. Ploughing, threshing, timber sawing, etc. will all be undertaken by preserved steam traction engines. The rally boasts a traditional old time fairground where many of the rides will be powered and lit by magnificent Showman’s road locomotives. There is a large working field where you can see not only steam ploughing but also

vintage tractors at work. Corn is threshed by steam power and steam-powered saws convert tree trunks into planks after being lifted into position by a rail-mounted steam crane. Amongst rural crafts being demonstrated are dry stone walling, blacksmithing, fence making and wood sculpture. First seen three years ago is the Great Welland Railway. This is a length of standard gauge railway with a full sized steam locomotive giving demonstrations – something you won’t see at many shows! Welland boasts magnificent displays of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, historic military vehicles, tractors and stationary oil engines. Each day the exhibits take part in parades in the grand arena. Other events include races between traction engines, children’s tug of war, military vehicle demonstrations, and much more. Music is important, and wherever you go on the ground you will never be far from fairground organs or brass bands and don’t miss the Cancan dancers giving performances during each day. If you have never seen tractor pulling, be prepared to be amazed as specially built machines compete to see who can pull the weighted sledge the farthest.

If you are in the market for a traction engine, vintage tractor or anything in that line, you may find it in the annual vintage auction sale which takes place on the Friday of the rally. All this plus models, radio controlled model trucks, crafts and Farmers’ Market, hundreds of trade stands, trailer rides by steam power, entertainment from the world renowned Van Buren magic show, Emma Puddy’s aerial acrobatics display and an excellent range of refreshments including a bar with real ale, awaits you at this fantastic weekend. With the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills you will have a day out to be remembered for a long, long time. To avoid queues at the gates advance tickets are now available via the website: www.wellandsteamrally.co.uk So come along to Welland on the weekend of July 29th - 31st, you certainly won’t be disappointed! Summer Reads There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month. Flawed – Cecelia Ahern A book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal. Best British Short Stories 2016 – edited by Nicholas Royle Now in its sixth year, this annual anthology brings together some of the best fiction from British writers published over the last 12 months. Editor Nicholas Royle has scoured the market, including other anthologies, magazines, newspapers and websites, to find this year’s selection. With a wide range of genres and voices, and a satisfying mix of authors, Best British Short Stories may well introduce you to a new favourite writer. Page 32

The Hanging Club – Tony Parsons There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping. My Name is Leon – Kit de Waal When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.

The Museum of You – Carys Bray Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings. The Sudden Appearance of Hope – Claire North No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will go in their quest for perfection.

Health

By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk

Growing Up, Not Growing Out: Childhood Obesity

Most parents would say their child’s health and life expectancy is vitally important. Yet nearly a third of all children in the UK are overweight or obese, potentially jeopardising their health and shortening their lifespan. Last year Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, warned that “[poor diets] and couch potato lifestyles are normalising obesity and as parents, a third of us can’t now spot when our own child is seriously overweight”. National Childhood Obesity Week, running from 4th-10th July, aims to raise awareness of this escalating problem. The Scale and Dangers of Childhood Obesity The 2014 Public Health Survey for England identified 31.2% of 2-15 year olds as overweight or obese. The 2014/15 National Child Measurement identified 19.1% of Year 6 children (aged 10-11) as obese and 14.2% as overweight, while 9.1% of Reception children (aged 45) were already obese, with another 12.8% overweight. ‘Puppy fat’ that children ‘grow out of’ is a potentially dangerous myth. Obese children often grow into obese adults, increasing their risk of developing insulin resistance, premature onset of diabetes and heart disease, cardiovascular disease, Page 38

disability, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis) and some cancers. Dr Sania Nishtar, Co-Chair of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity, warns of obesity’s “impact on educational attainment” and “physical, psychological and health consequences”. Tackling the Problem • The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) provides data to help the government understand and tackle children’s weight issues and aims to engage with families about healthy lifestyles and weight issues. Trained healthcare professionals measure the height and weight of Reception and Year 6 children annually and calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI) centile. • Initiatives such as Change4Life provide straightforward information about healthy family lifestyles. • The Sugar Tax may be controversial, but government research shows that if we halved the sugar in soft drinks, average sugar consumption would decrease significantly, particularly in 10-19 year olds. Dropping the nation’s sugar intake to recommended levels within 10 years would avoid 4,000 early deaths and save the NHS £480 million a year. What Parents Can Do: • Give them the best start. Exclusively breastfeeding babies until 6 months significantly reduces their risk of obesity. • Reduce Their Sitting Time. Prolonged sitting damages

health, even in people who exercise regularly. Keep binge-watching sessions to a minimum and break them up with bursts of activity. • Increase Their Physical Activity. This needn’t be team sports or gym sessions. Walking or cycling to school (even part way), playground trips, countryside walks, gardening, kicking a football around, swimming, indoor snowboarding, playing tag or fitness videogames all provide great exercise. • Ensure They Get Enough Sleep. Lack of sleep can affect appetite-stimulating hormones, as well as negatively affecting memory, concentration, immunity and mental and physical health. • Improve Their Diet > Reduce sugar. Beware hidden sugars in sauces and cereals, cut out sugary drinks, and gradually wean them off adding sugar to cereals or drinks. > Provide Five a Day. Any form of fruit or vegetables will do, but ration juices, as these contain ‘free’ sugars just as sugary drinks do. > Keep Portion Sizes Small for younger children. > Monitor Pocket Money Spending to ensure it isn’t spent on junk food and sweets.

Finally, Set a Good Example. Spending your free time in front of the TV eating unhealthy snacks makes it hard to persuade your child that following suit could damage their health. For more information, visit: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/ Childhealth6-15 http://www.nhs.uk/change4life

Home & Interiors Storage Solutions For Every Room By Katherine Sorrell

Well-designed storage makes an enormous difference to our homes, so interiors expert Katherine Sorrell takes us through some room-by-room ideas. Our homes are full of stuff, and each room requires specific solutions. You could do this yourself, plotting on graph paper where doors, windows, radiators and other furnishings will go, making use of ‘dead’ spaces such as under stairs or sloping ceilings, the alcoves either side of a chimney breast or the space below a bay window. Alternatively, interior designers can create an overall ‘look’, but should understand space planning, while architects are suited to more extensive works that involve extensions or alterations, and can help to make the most of your space. Living Rooms Often the public face of a home, the living room is where you’ll show off treasured possessions whilst concealing less attractive items, so to cope with these twin demands build in storage that includes open shelving and/or display niches as well as Page 42

cupboards. A central chimney breast with alcoves either side is ideal for shelving above and cupboards below, or run a long, low cupboard along one wall – perhaps incorporating a fireplace or TV in the centre – the top of which can serve as seating or display space. If two rooms have been knocked into one there may be space for shelving or cupboards over the central double doors, or in a small room it may be possible to fit shelving above or around the door or the windows. Halls Hallway storage is all about organisation – slimline furniture such as console tables or storage benches works well. For a variety of storage types, supplement coat hooks behind the door with shoe racks at the bottom, an umbrella hook, and a shelf at the top. Alternatively, it may be possible to build an under-stair cupboard, kitted out with hooks, shelves and racks. Bathrooms Custom-made floor and wall cabinets are ideal for storing toiletries and spare towels, keeping surfaces clear, while vanity units with shelves, drawers and cabinets can be built around sanitaryware to cover up pipe work. Alternatively, consider free-standing options such as dressers, cupboards and chests, and wall-mounted

pieces like shelves, racks and mirrored cupboards. Pipe runs can be hidden behind false walls of studwork and plasterboard, within which you can punch shallow shelves and cupboards. Do the same when building a shower wall and create niches in which to store shampoos and soaps. Bedrooms There are four ways to fit out a bedroom: use free-standing pieces that you can take with you when you move (but probably won’t be space efficient); find a carpenter or joiner to make a bespoke room; use a fitted-furniture specialist, whose ranges often feature ingenious storage solutions; or use inexpensive, off-the-shelf elements from DIY shops or storage specialists, and make it up yourself. It’s a question of working out what best suits you, your property and your pocket. Children’s Rooms Raised beds with storage underneath are great for storing clothes or toys. Drawers should be easy to open, but with stops that prevent them from sliding right out. Use large boxes, baskets or cupboards for bigger toys, and smaller containers for things like Lego, toy soldiers and paints. Image - Form playroom storage, featuring Form Konnect 1x1 cubes, £10; Form floating shelves, from £5; and Form photo shelves, £10. All Form at B&Q, tel. 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

A big 'Thank you' to all volunteers Volunteers’ Week took place in June and was an opportunity to celebrate and thank all those people who give so much of their time to support their local community. This year the week became somewhat overshadowed by the various celebrations for the Queen’s 90th Birthday, ironically mostly organised by volunteers. In some cases the weather was not kind and good old British resourcefulness had to come to the rescue. Tewkesbury has a very strong volunteer force, often discreetly working behind the scenes, among other things they raise money for the hospital and play parks, help those who are vulnerable or in need of support and run numerous local groups such as the Brownies, Cubs and Boys’ Brigade. The demand from children to join these groups has been growing over recent years and now outstrips the available places. The increased number of young people wanting structure and discipline and to be directly involved with physical and social activities, rather than remotely communicating via a screen, is a good sign for the future. Tewkesbury has historically been patriotic and proud of our Armed Forces and this is particularly visible on Remembrance Sunday when the service at the Abbey and The Cross draws large crowds and the

children are on parade. Many volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that these occasions run smoothly. This month Tewkesbury Nature Reserved opened a new bridge linking Walton Cardiff to Priors Park. Volunteer work has helped to make this large area more accessible to local residents. The return of many birds and other flora and fauna is being encouraged, whilst other work on waterways could contribute to flood alleviation. Which type of ISA is best for you? put your money to one side. You get instant access to your savings, and need to be at least 16 years of age to open this account.

Individual Savings Accounts were first introduced in 1999. They provided exemption from income tax and capital gains tax, and quickly became a popular place to save and invest. Back then, it was a straightforward choice between a Cash ISA or a Stocks and Shares equivalent, but with seven different types of Individual Savings Account now available, making the right choice is much more complicated. So how do you know which ISA is best for you, and even whether you’re eligible to apply? We take a look at the different ISA accounts available, to identify which ones might suit your needs. Instant access cash Isa A straightforward tax-free savings account offered by banks and building societies - interest rates have fallen considerably in recent years, but it’s also a risk-free way to Page 50

stocks and shares Isa Stocks and Shares ISAs are open to anyone aged 18 or over. The money is divided between various investment products, including company shares, government and corporate bonds, and unit trusts. Although as an investment there’s greater risk with a Stocks and Shares ISA, you can control your exposure to it by splitting your annual allowance between this and a Cash ISA. JunIor Isa Parents can save for their children in a Junior ISA. It’s open to children under the age of 18, but the child can only open an account if they are aged 16 or over. The annual allowance currently stands at £4,080, but a child between the ages of 16 and 18 can also open an adult ISA, which boosts their saving capacity. For a child under the age of 16, the account must be opened by a parent or legal guardian, but there are no restrictions on who can pay money in once it’s open. help to Buy Isa A fairly recent addition to

the ISA family, the Help to Buy ISA was introduced in December 2015 in an attempt to boost the first-time buyer market. For every £4 saved, the government has pledged to add a £1 bonus (up to a maximum of £3,000), making it a great way to save for a deposit on a first property. There are limits on how much you can save each month, however, so it’s a good idea to start saving early. You can put away a maximum of £200 a month into a Help to Buy ISA, as well as a lump sum of up to £1,000 when the account is opened. You’ll receive the bonus when your property purchase is complete, and as couples are entitled to have a Help to Buy ISA each, there’s the potential to receive an extra £6,000 from the government. InherItance Isa To avoid having to pay tax on a deceased partner’s ISA savings, the Chancellor introduced the facility to inherit tax-free from December 2014. From the date of a spouse’s death, the surviving partner is granted an Additional Permitted Subscription (APS) for the total amount in the account, and has three years in which to use it. Once an APS application form has been completed, they can open an account in their own name and the money will be transferred across.

To advertise call 07740 784 444 or 01684 772572 or visit www.tewkesburymagazine.co.uk

lIfetIme Isa The Lifetime ISA will be introduced from 2017, and is for people between the ages of 18 and 39. A 25% bonus from the government is available, so for every £4 saved they will put in £1 up to a maximum of £1,000. If money is withdrawn for anything other than a house purchase, you’ll be charged 5% on the amount taken out and lose the government bonus. It can be used towards the purchase of a house up to the value of £450,000, otherwise you need to keep the money in the account until the age of 60 to avoid the penalty. Additionally, the account needs to be open for a minimum period of a year to qualify for the government top-

up. You can hold a Lifetime ISA and a Help to Buy ISA at the same time, but are only eligible to receive the bonus on one of them. InnovatIve fInance Isa This is seen to be a riskier choice for investors, but one that potentially brings higher returns. One of the risks is that your money won’t be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme because the banks are not involved. You place your money with peer-to-peer lending platforms, which could attract a higher rate of interest than with Cash or Stocks and Shares ISAs. At the time of writing, however, there are only eight such online lenders offering this type of ISA.

The ISA limit for the 2016/17 tax year is £15,240, rising to £20,000 in 2017/18, and the savings year runs from 6th April to the following 5th April. Each type of ISA has its own pros and cons, and it’s worth remembering that unless you opt for a fixed rate ISA, interest rates can fluctuate widely throughout the year. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/saving/article-3505692/ The-seven-different-types-offerchoose-one-you.html http://www.moneywise. co.uk/banking-saving/savingsaccounts-isas/how-to-inherit-isa http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/ money/mortgageshome/article3520497/From-new-LifetimeIsa-shared-ownership-banishtime-buyer-blues.html
