Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, It’s that time of year again when the schools will be out soon for the summer! With that comes the question of what we can do to keep the children entertained. Fortunately, we have a great 'What’s On' section for you towards the back of the magazine for some ideas of days out and local events you can go to. Make sure to also keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we will be adding more events as they come in. On the 8th and 9th of July we will see the biggest free medieval re-enactment and fair in Europe return to town. Tewkesbury’s Medieval Festival boasts amazing markets, crafts, pottery, food, drink, jesters, dancers, musicians and more. It's a great family day out and there is sure to be something for everyone. A great big 'well done' to everyone who took part in the Race for Life last month in Gloucester or the Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean, you did everyone proud! I hope you have a great month ahead! For me, July equals watching Wimbledon and sunny days in the garden, so I’m looking forward to it! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Steam in the Malvern Hills
WELLAND STEAM & COUNTRY RALLY July 28th, 29th & 30th 2017
If you are looking for the perfect day out for the family this summer, look no further than the Worcestershire village of Welland, which hosts the annual Steam and Country Rally, now in its 53rd year. Welland is situated between Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn with easy access to the M50. The postcode for Sat Navs is WR13 6NG. The 2017 event is organised by the Ross-on-Wye Steam Engine Society, whose members give all their time voluntarily to put on what is now regarded as one of the biggest and best events of its type in the country. A mixture of nostalgia, sights, sounds and a terrific atmosphere await you at Welland. The event is special in that you can see steam engines performing the tasks they were built for in the years leading up to the Second World War. Ploughing, threshing, timber sawing, etc. will all be undertaken by preserved steam traction engines. The rally boasts a traditional old time fairground where many of the rides will be powered and lit by electricity generated by magnificent Showmans’ road locomotives. This year sees a tribute paid to the great Pat Collins – The king of showmen, which is hoped to include all of his surviving engines, the great Pat Collins organ, the Scammell Showtracs plus other memorabilia. There is a large working field where you can see not only steam ploughing but also vintage tractors at work. Corn is threshed by steam power and steam powered saws convert tree trunks
into planks after being lifted into position by a rail-mounted steam crane. Amongst rural crafts being demonstrated are usually cider making, dry stone walling, blacksmithing, fence making and wood sculpture. First seen four years ago is the Great Welland Railway. This is a length of standard gauge railway with a full sized steam locomotive giving demonstrations – something you won’t see at many shows! Welland boasts magnificent displays of vintage and classic cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, historic military vehicles, tractors and stationary oil engines. Each day the exhibits take part in parades in the grand arena. Other events include races between traction engines, children’s tug of war, military vehicle demonstrations etc. Music is important, and wherever you go on the ground you will never be far from fairground organs or brass band players and don’t miss the Cancan dancers giving performances during each day. If you have never seen tractor pulling, be prepared to be amazed as specially built machines compete to see who can pull the weighted sledge the farthest.
models, radio controlled model trucks, a Crafts and Farmers’ Market, hundreds of trade stands, entertainment from the world-renowned Sheep Show, the colourful Potty Parrots, Punch and Judy and an excellent range of refreshments including a bar with real ale. With the magnificent backdrop of the Malvern Hills, you have a day out to be remembered for a long, long time. So come along to Welland on the weekend of July 28th 30th, you certainly won’t be disappointed! Remember you can save time by buying your tickets beforehand, see www.wellandsteamrally. co.uk for details. Note: there is free admission for all children under 11 years of age and there are ATM facilities on site.
If you are in the market for a traction engine, vintage tractor or anything in that line, you may find it among the thousand plus lots in the annual vintage auction sale which takes place on the Friday of the rally. Further attractions include

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Parade 2017 The 2017 Medieval Festival Parade on 9th July promises to be a really spectacular community event bringing together hundreds of participants from 12 local schools, playgroups, dance schools, Tewksbury Fair Shares, the Drop-In Centre and church and other groups with many of the re-enactors and entertainers that descend on Tewkesbury for the annual festival. Thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund under their “Celebrate” programme and the Summerfield Charitable Trust and a donation from Bookworm, carnival artists have been working with many of the groups helping them create medievalinspired models to parade. Members of local WI groups and Tewkesbury Flower Club have been working on their costumes for months, children
from Alderman Knight School have learnt to drum with Waytes and Measures and ladies from the Plantagenet Medieval Society have been working with the young dancers at Amy Flynn and Amy Bastin dance schools. Giants were a traditional part of medieval processions so it is only fitting that Tewkesbury should have its own giants. “Margaret” and “Elizabeth” will lead the Lancastrian and York courts and will be joined by St Blaise, the Frampton giant and his entourage of fabulous creatures. There will be medieval musicians aplenty, Zooted jesters, Pentacle Drummers from Eastbourne and festival favourites Mythago Morris. We are also very excited to welcome Sbandieratori di Arezzo, a troupe of 12 Italian flag wavers from Arezzo who will perform after the battle each day, in the parade and after Sunday Evensong in the Abbey grounds. Look out for the town band in their new medieval costumes and
a familiar face, Peggy Clatworthy, one of the festival organisers, who will take part in the parade as Tewkesbury’s new mayor. The parade sets off from Quay Street at 11.15am and works its way down the High Street, round the Cross, past the Abbey and ends at the Vineyards opposite Lower Lode Lane at around 12.15pm. Please give the participants a clap as they pass – they have all been working very hard on their costumes and models! Roads will close in succession from 10.30 am to 12.15 pm so be sure to get into town and parked nice and early. Parking will also be available from 9.30am in the Vineyards behind the Abbey which is convenient for both town and festival. www.tewkesburymedievalfestival.org

Safe Journey by Pippa Greenwood
Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase Page 12
quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible. Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary
tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden. And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of favourite gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

It is ideal for mycotic(fungal) nails and provides an instant aesthetic fix for this problem, disguising any discoloration. Application of the resin after nail reduction will seal the nail surface and reduce fungus infiltrating the nail plate where the nail is thickened (Onychochauxis). It can also be used to recreate a synthetic but natural looking nail that is bonded to remnants of a damaged nail and is suitable for both men and women. Each foot treatment is finished with a foot massage using high-quality Gehwol foot cream, as prescribed by the specific demands of the client’s feet. Whether your feet deserve some pampering or you have cause for targeted treatment, Fiona will ensure that after every visit your feet will feel like new and in many cases, improve foot comfort beyond expectations. Fun for all ages at Bugsboarding
What a pleasure it was to be invited to Bugsboarding Mountainboard Centre at Overton Cottage in Maisemore (GL2 8HP) to see and try all the different activities available to do there. Having never visited the centre before, I wasn’t quite sure what was there. However, I was amazed at how many different things you can try whether it be mountain boarding, mountain biking, dirt scooting or grass sledging. I must say at this point it was my son and his friend doing the activities! AJ and Bugs were very welcoming and soon the boys were getting kitted out in all their safety gear to start having a few hours of fun! The first thing they tried was mountain boarding. With the help of Freddie, they were taken half way down the hill to learn how to balance on the board and more importantly how to stop and land correctly. After half an hour, the boys
had mastered what to do and were off down the hill at quite a speed I might add with Freddie following behind to make sure they were ok. The best bit was not having to walk back up the hill to the top as Bugs was waiting at the bottom with his truck to bring everyone back to the top. At just £10.00 (14 years and under) or £12.00 for adults (15 years and over) for 1 hour what a great way to spend time doing something different. Scooters were the next thing to try. They jumped on and decided to go a little higher up the hill to gather more speed. Soon they were off on the dirt tracks, taking in the twists and turns of the course and relishing the freedom that the tracks gave them. Finally, it was time for grass sledging, and after some gentle persuasion from AJ, I decided to have a go too! Freddie gave us instructions on how to steer and more importantly on how to stop! And once we had proved we could stop we set off down the hill. Gathering speed and with the wind in my face, it was the most exhilarating experience. I couldn’t wait to get to the bottom to get back up the hill to have another go. The sledges can carry two people if you have young children that want to give it a go or you can just go down by yourself. The centre caters for any group booking including birthdays, school groups, hen/stag do's and corporate training/team building. We had a fabulous time and
Page 18
I can highly recommend this for kids of all ages and adults too! You can just turn up at the centre but I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment. Cake and Bake Peach Crostata
A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.
Ingredients:
1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl.
PASTRY • 350g plain flour • 175g butter, chilled and diced • 2 tbsp caster sugar
2.
• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp cold water FILLING • 6 peaches, halved, stones removed and thickly sliced
3. 4.
• 2 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour • Milk to glaze
5.
• Icing sugar, to dust
Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling TIP
If you don’t have a pastry lattice roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin strips and drape over the filling. Page 24
6.
7.
Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together. Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish. Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip). Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry. Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

If you need a laptop but don’t want to spend a fortune, you’ll soon be spoilt for choice: Microsoft is joining Google’s Chromebooks in the low-cost laptop game. Devices such as Acer’s Chromebook 15 (around £240) offer big-laptop performance for a fraction of the price, but Google’s Chrome OS may put potential customers off. That’s what Microsoft hopes, anyway: there’s a whole bunch of Chromebook-competing Windows 10 laptops going on sale this summer, offering the value for money of a Chromebook with the familiar face of Windows 10. If like most people you really need a computer to get online and access cloud-based services such as Spotify or Netflix, you’ll find that such laptops are excellent value for money. The only thing that really lets them down is their fairly limited storage, which is more like a phone or tablet than a PC - but then if you’re using the cloud, that doesn’t matter either.

Home & Interiors Update Your Bathroom for Summer can make a big difference. Think about adding artwork to the walls, too, for colour, pattern and a dramatic focal point.
Give your bathroom an appealing summer makeover with our easy-toachieve tips. A DASH OF PAINT Any room can be updated with a lick of paint, and bathrooms are no different. Choose specially formulated bathroom paint, which provides longlasting protection against condensation and mould. Fresh white looks great in a bathroom, while deeper shades such as charcoal or navy make a striking impact, and mid blues, greens or yellows are fresh and cheery. UPDATE YOUR ACCESSORIES Choose all sorts of fashionable new options for items such as towels, soap dishes, shower curtains, even loo roll holders and toilet seats, from graphic patterns to flamingo designs or marble and copper - little things Page 28
REPLACE YOUR TAPS AND WASTES Out-of-date tap styles and scratched wastes are easy for a plumber to replace, but take advice on technical considerations like water pressure and how far taps should project over the basin - then choose functional styles that you love. You could also save on bills by installing watersaving taps and an aerated or low-flow showerhead. CONCEAL CLUTTER The easiest way to create storage space is with a slimline, wall-mounted cupboard (perhaps with a mirror on the door), though other options include racks, rails, shelves and hooks. Matching baskets, rows of glass jars and small wooden crates are pretty and help keep things tidy, while free-standing caddies and towel ladders conveniently hold heaps of stuff. AT THE WINDOW Consider replacing a dull roller blind with something more interesting - Roman blinds, café curtains or wooden louvres or shutters are all good options, or a cheap and instant transformation is possible with frosted adhesive film. ADD A PLANT Houseplants are back in fashion once again, so look for plants
By Katherine Sorrell
that thrive in damp conditions and are happy with the level of light in your bathroom. Options include peace lilies, English ivy, reeds, palms and Boston ferns. BRING IN MORE LIGHT Mirrors help make your smallest room feel brighter and more spacious, so an oversized mirror will be a statement piece as well as an essential element. Swapping to LED lighting will save money in the long run, and changing the light fittings themselves is a quick job for an electrician if you want alternatives that are good-looking and up-to-date. Remember that they must comply with safety regulations and be certified for use in a damp environment. ATTACK OLD GROUT Try cleaning discoloured grout with proprietary products first, but if the mould or stains won’t shift, buy a special grout rake from a hardware store and carefully remove the old grout to a depth of at least 2mm, then apply new grout. While you’re at it, remove black and mouldy silicone sealant with a sharp knife, then clean and dry the area thoroughly and re-apply new sealant. You’ll need a steady hand for this bit, so take a deep breath before you start, and if in doubt, search for an online video for guidance.
