Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, As we wave goodbye to Spring 2016, we welcome British summertime in the hope for plenty of sun, fun days out, and lots of summer fetes and picnics in the park. With the weather warming up it’s the perfect time to start getting out and about and getting some more exercise. I am going to start doing my local Parkrun every weekend, wish me luck! Over the next few weeks, you will start seeing the flags of St. George spring up everywhere to commemorate the start of Euro 2016 and expressing England’s dream of winning a tournament for the first time since 1966. June also gives us the perfect excuse to enjoy some delicious strawberries and cream and the odd Pimms or two while we enjoy the start of the Wimbledon fortnight. (This is also the time of year I take up tennis very seriously)! Tewkesbury has The Food and Drink Festival to look forward to this month, a must for all foodies that promises fun for all the family, so hope to see you all there! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for Written Communication – Misery or Joy? Written communication has a long lasting effect because it can be read over and over again. It can reignite joy and bitterness. In my years of consultancy work, I have seen the written word cause more aggression, drama and strikes than any other means of communication. The written word, if there is any ambiguity, will always be read negatively. You must write, not so you are understood, but so you cannot be misunderstood. Although communicating by letter has decreased considerably in recent years, using email which of course also requires people to spell and use grammar correctly, has increased. If you want to have real impact and show that you care, a letter or card can be the most powerful way of winning friends and influencing people. In the business world those who want an appointment with a decision maker should write a letter first and then follow up with a phone call. So here are a few tips to help make your written word more effective: 1. Firstly, attract attention with an attention getting word, phrase or line, for example ‘Here is some good news’. Always try to get something positive either on your subject matter or your first words that will illicit the response ‘I want to hear what you have to say’. 2. Keep it short. More and more people are getting emails on their mobiles so long emails can be hard to read, try and stick to 2 or 3 paras and 2 to 3 sentences per para. This also applies to letters; short letters get read. 3. Don’t criticise or be negative. This is the biggest cause of communication breakdown,
aggression and stress. If this is necessary, speak don’t write. 4. Read before sending. Never send an email or a letter without reading it all through before sending and ask yourself, if you got this how would you feel? 5. Choose the right time. Never send an email or letter in response to anger or frustration caused by one you may have received without first giving yourself time. A great tip, don’t send an email overnight, draft it reread it and then send it the next day. 6. Check spelling and grammar. This is so easy with spellcheck, as otherwise you will lose respect and trust. 7. Use key words. There are certain key words that have great power when we read them, they will also generate pleasure in the reader. “you” “your” and “mine” the reader reads them as “I”, “me” and “my”. 8. Look for the opportunity to send nice messages with positive content, something that shows you care. It’s interesting how Twitter is declining because it’s all about ME! 9. Be careful with attachments. Again so much of our communication is on the mobile and it is more difficult to read attachments this way. 10. Don’t ‘cc’. If there is not an essential need to know, don’t waste other people’s time by copying them.

Getting Ready for Summer by Louise England We certainly experienced four seasons in one day during May. Can we dare to hope that June will be warm and bright and we can get ready for summer? A healthier regime may be on your mind or even implemented as you finally remove the thick jumpers and start wearing shorts and skirts. So it’s time to pack away your winter clothes, coats and shoes. Vacuum storage bags are an ideal solution to save space and make sure moths are kept out – I swap my summer clothes for winter so you only need one set. Storage is often at a premium and clothes we use every day or at least weekly must be easily accessible, and those items we don’t need until the cold weather returns can be put out of sight and out of mind. Now is the time to take a look at your summer wardrobe and go through the t-shirts, tops and bottoms. With your own critical eye (or with the help of a friend) decide if each item still fits, is in good condition and if you still like it. My test is asking myself – would I buy this item new today? Fashions and tastes change from year to year so be brave!

Fundraising for Acorns Children’s Hospice These little woollen animals sold well again this year despite Easter being early. A total of 2,645 animals were knitted and we made a profit of £2,030.65 and were able to take a cheque to Acorns for £2,200, this included money raised from Christmas Catalogues. A big thank you to all our helpers whether you knitted, stitched, sold, donated eggs or allowed us to purchase eggs at a much reduced price! You have all contributed in some way to help us raise this sum of money for Acorns. Too soon to think about Christmas, but later this month we will
be receiving the Webb Ivory Christmas Catalogues (which will be put out of sight and out of mind until September!). More customers will be welcome when the time comes! On Sunday 17th July we will be having a Tombola Stall at the Tea Party Fundraiser for Acorns Children’s Hospice at Bird’s Farm. If you have any unwanted gifts or any new items we would be pleased to accept them at 15 Paxhill Lane, Twyning. We can also collect contact Anita Haycock on 01684 293890 to arrange a collection. - Sam Haycock

Cake and Bake Cheese, Onion & Pepper Quiche This rich and creamy quiche can be served warm with new potatoes and coleslaw for a filling supper, but is just as tasty served cold as part of a picnic, packed lunch or summer buffet.
Ingredients: • 250g shortcrust pastry • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and very finely chopped • 4 large eggs • 200ml crème fraiche • 150ml double cream • Large pinch of grated nutmeg • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 75g mature Cheddar cheese, grated • 25g Gruyere cheese, grated • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced
Serves 6 - 8 Ready in 1 hour 40 mins
TIP
You can freeze this quiche for up to 2 months. Allow to cool completely then wrap either the whole quiche or individual slices in foil. Page 10
1. Roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface
and use to line a 20cm fluted loose based flan tin (it should be at least 4cm deep). Trim off the excess pastry and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
2. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6.
Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Line the chilled pastry case with baking paper and baking beans. Place the flan tin on the baking sheet in the oven and bake blind for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans and bake for a further 5-6 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Reduce the oven temperature to 190C/170C fan/Gas 5.
3. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan and fry
the chopped onion for 8-10 minutes until very soft. Drain on kitchen paper. Whisk the eggs in large jug then whisk in the crème fraiche and double cream. Add the nutmeg and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
4. Spread the fried onions in the pastry case and scatter over the Cheddar cheese. Gently pour in the egg mixture and top with the pepper slices. Scatter over the Gruyere cheese. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until the filling is set and golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

THE OX
cheltenham
The Ox is a bastion of simple, top-notch, British Fayre cooked to impeccable standards and is wonderfully located in the very centre of Cheltenham. It already has an incredible reputation for serving mind-blowing, delicious steaks cooked to perfection in their charcoal Josper oven which creates a real depth of flavour. Whilst beautifully aged British steak is at the heart of The Ox, their exceptional chefs also produce fresh fish and vegetarian dishes. The Ox has a range of stunning small plates, classic charcuterie and superb seasonal side dishes, all finished off with either a sweet
and sticky indulgent pudding or an unrivalled selection of local British and continental cheeses. The service is warm and welcoming, just what you need after a long hard day. The Ox is also ideal for business lunches as they offer an express lunch menu from Wednesday to Saturday. Their brunch menu is available at the weekends from 10am and the Sunday roasts are arguably the best you will ever taste. Their Early Bird Deal is also certainly worth a mention. Picture the scene - you've just finished work and are in need of a little escapism. For just ÂŁ14 you can indulge in rump
steak, fries, sauce and a glass of wine! Why not take your own favourite bottle of wine with you on a Tuesday for something a little different. With the finer weather of late the team behind the bar have been concocting some summer-inspired cocktails to be enjoyed on the (fingers crossed) sunny terrace to compliment a bite from the Terrace menu. I really can't express how impressed I was when I dined at The Ox, I've already made plans to revisit. Written by Harriet Court from Glos Directories

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
I’ve just found my cheque book. It wasn’t easy because the last time I used it was in July, when I bought a car, and in fact the last time I used it before then was Christmas 2013 when I ran out of ideas for presents and gave my kids cheques instead. Oh, and in my pocket I have £1.56... What does all this have to do with anything? Well, on 29th June 1966, Barclay’s Bank launched Britain’s first credit card (the Barclaycard, since you ask), and money as I and others of my vintage once knew it has been dying ever since. The credit card and its contemporary, the charge card, were responses to the illusion that cash and money was the same thing. Despite the fact that the Lombards had disproved the idea centuries earlier by providing international credit facilities in which limitless sums could be moved around without anyone so much as sniffing a ducat, people in the post-War age still had to carry cash to cover all their spending. And in post-War America, spending was getting more and more extravagant. One of the luxuries the newlyrich post-War Americans were starting to spend more and more Page 12
lavishly on was dining out; and the first charge card, Diner’s Club, enabled them to do just that. If you didn’t customarily carry enough cash to pay for a blow-out for yourself and all your friends – or for yourself and that one special friend – and provided you had a fat enough salary, all you had to do was pay an annual fee and your card would cover the bill at any participating restaurant. It wasn’t credit, though – the balance had to be cleared in full every month. Diner’s Club launched with 200 members and 27 participating restaurants; by the end of the year it had 20,000 members and other high-value retailers were clamouring to be allowed in. Finders Services, launched in Britain in 1951, was a straightforward copy; it was swallowed up by Diners Club in 1962, and in 1963 American Express, another charge card operation, arrived in the UK too. (Barclaycard also had an American connection: it was a franchisee of the Bank of America’s BankAmericard scheme, later rebranded as Visa). At first, Barclaycard and its rivals were similar in operation: since extended credit was illegal in Britain until 1968 you had to clear your Barclaycard every month, just as with Diners Club and American Express. But it was always intended to be more democratic than the charge cards, which were aimed at the well-off and the prestige trades. It didn’t charge a fee, for a start; there was no salary
qualification but there was a credit limit; and given Barclay’s established position in the UK it was accepted by a much, much greater number and variety of retailers. Without going into too much detail, here’s how plastic has fared in those 50 years. 1969: the cheque card arrives. 1972: the Access credit card is a co-operative of several banks. 1987: the debit card is born. 1995: debit card transactions exceed credit card transactions. 1998: debit card transactions exceed cheque transactions. 2004: plastic overtakes cash. One could go on, but you get the picture. Plastic rules. Which raises a question I’m qualified to ask but not answer? What exactly is money? It’s clearly not the pennies like cartwheels I took to the sweetshop as a child. It’s not a fistful of fivers, either: a fiver isn’t really a fiver at all; it’s just a picture of a fiver. Money as a reflection of itself? It’s no more ephemeral a concept than money as a seemingly endless chain of electronic ones and zeroes. And if money doesn’t really exist, why can’t I have more of it?

The Pressures of Modern Parenting Being the parent of an adolescent these days seems to be such an emotional and physical challenge. Gone are the days when children’s formative years were innocent and trouble-free. Modern life offers huge challenges for both adolescents and parents alike. I regularly see more and more family members of all ages who have varying levels of low self-esteem and confidence. I’m sure you can remember a time when you enquired what is wrong and got the usual shrug of the shoulders and non-committal grunts. The reasons for this can be; • Little or no family history of open communication • They think you want to know everything that’s going on • They are concerned you think they are crazy • They are convinced you don’t take them seriously • That you won’t listen • That you are old, so how could you possibly understand
Of course all parents try with some degree of success to solve various issues their children might have but they can be too close to allow teenagers to fully open up and pour their hearts out. That’s where I come in. The top 5 most common teenager’s concerns are; 1. Friends and Social Acceptance 2. Sex 3. Body Image 4. School 5. Family life And how many of those do you really truly believe the average teen is going to discuss with Mum and Dad? These in turn can lead to a complicated list of mental and physical behaviours including depression, self-harm, eating disorders, abuse (sexual, drugs, alcohol), violent behaviour and many more. The first and most important step to take is to look at ways of improving communication. This not only includes the teenager themselves but also the way you communicate with them.
As much as I would like to say that I can resolve this and the other issues in this article, I am afraid that would prove impossible. However, I am running a free Parent Support Evening in Hereford on Thursday 23rd June. To book your free place please go to eventbrite.co.uk and search Parent Support Evening Hereford or follow the links on my website, www.nichepersonalcoaching.co.uk. I look forward to seeing you there. - Carl May, PNLP

Gill named her friend, Christine Wray, as her mayoress and her husband, Mike, as her consort. Her chaplain is Reverend Wendy Ruffle of Prior's Park, Tewkesbury. Gill lives in Churchdown and represents the Hucclecote ward
Project Alleycat In 1905, in his 'Short History of the Old Alleys, Courts and Lanes', John Rogers wrote ‘The time of which I am now speaking was 1812. Since that time, the property has been modernised, like many other front street houses, to the regret of the present inhabitants of the town, some of whom for many years past have been bringing out to view the features of the old houses, which makes the town and streets much more interesting’. That sounds so up to date. Slowly, though, time, neglect and the hand of man has been eroding, bit by bit, those features which provide that interest. We’re probably not yet heading for Alley extinction, but the position is such that we should be guarding against that possibility. Whilst there are rules for conservation areas, the community are the real and the best guardians of our heritage. We’re the ones who notice when a wall is pulled down rather than rebuilt in Post Office Lane, or the paving is repaired with tarmac in Prior’s Alley.
as a borough councillor. Gill, who has been a councillor since 2011, said: "I am honoured to become the Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough for 2016/17 and, over the year ahead, I am looking forward to meeting lots of people who do such wonderful things for our borough. I also hope to help raise the profile of my chosen charities, Winston’s Wish and the Stroke Unit at Gloucester Royal Hospital, and help bring in some much-needed donations."
The mayor attends a number of community engagements throughout the year.
Councillor Harry Turbyfield was invested as deputy mayor for the year at the same ceremony. His partner, Ruth, is his mayoress. The mayor's role is to chair council meetings and to lead the council at civic events.
Project Alleycat isn’t a new group of town whingers. It aspires to join the ‘doers’ and work with them to do the right things in our town’s back lanes, alleys and courts. We want to capture knowledge of the past, both the ‘formal’ history and the folk stories so beloved of John Moore. We want to highlight things that need doing, and if they can be done by volunteers, then we want to recruit enough volunteers to do them - properly. Training will be provided! Most of all, we want to turn all those unlived-in and unloved alleys into places we can proudly show off to visitors, using art in a multitude of forms to draw attention away from the concrete paving and the featureless modern brick walls.
welcomed with open arms! We have checklists you can use, or simply use a notebook and camera. To become an Alleycat, contact us through Facebook (Tewkesbury Alleycats) or by email at tewksalley@outlook.com.
This might take some time. As with all good strategies, we’re starting with the ‘where are we now’ phase; surveying all the alleys, looking for good and bad, and working out how to get to where we want to be. If you can spare an hour or two to help, by surveying an alley of your choice, you’ll be

Tackling Troublesome Weeds by Pippa Greenwood Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn. So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow Page 18

strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. Remove your weeds before they set seed. Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. Don’t take a short cut by rotovating ground which is
heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

fully, if you heap cover.
Q. What if I’m a nontaxpayer who doesn’t have £1,060 to pass across? It still works, it’s just a bit more complex if the nontaxpayer is earning just under the £10,600 threshold. This is because you have to transfer £1,060 of your allowance to take advantage – nothing more, nothing less. So let’s do another example. Suppose Fred is a basic rate taxpayer married to Wilma who earns £10,000 a year, so she’s only got £600 left of her tax free allowance. She can still move £1,060 to Fred, so he gains £212 on that amount.
That lowers her allowance to £9,540, but she earns £10,000 so she’ll pay basic 20% tax on the £440 – meaning she is £88 worse off. Overall, though they’re still up over £100. If you don’t get the maths, don’t worry, you’re always collectively up by doing this, so if you’re a non-taxpayer, even close to the limit it’s still worth applying. Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply. Page 26
The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laughout -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.
The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. Tewkesbury Cleaning & Domestic Services
When this article is published, I will no longer be Mayor. I will be passing the baton to Karen Brennan, who I am sure will do a splendid job. It has been, at least from my perspective, a very interesting and unexpected year. I hadn't realised quite how many volunteers and generally good eggs there are in this town! It has been a genuine privilege to meet so many. In the two hundred posts I have added to the Mayor's Facebook page, I hope that message has come across very strongly. Karen and Shelby will continue to promote volunteer activity starting with the Mayor's Tea Party on June 12th. I am sure Karen will do a particularly fine job of this with her long experience in the charitable sector and her understanding of the mechanics and processes involved. I would like to wish Karen every success in her role as Town Major of Tewkesbury. - by John Badham

World Blood Donor Day
World Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors. Why Should You Give Blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it. However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth. Who Can Give Blood? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood. Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months. Page 30
However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www. blood.co.uk/who-can-giveblood. Preparing To Give Blood You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session. To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history. What Happens When You Donate Blood Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous. You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing blood from your finger. A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with
antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm. After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323. Become a Lifesaver Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. So why not register today?

33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival Just as they did in 1471, the roar of canon, the clash of swords, and the shouts of fighting men will echo over the Tewkesbury Battle Field, as the 33rd annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival takes place on July 9th/10th.
characters including a doctor surgeon with bloody tales of medieval medicine, a dancing bear, and it is rumoured, dragons, will be found around the field. Children can enjoy learning simple circus skills, or taking part in historically themed arts and crafts in the Bright Knight Tent or a quiet break at the magical Story Tellers Garden.
When they are not fighting many of several thousand re-enactors and their families will live for the weekend in living history camps where you are welcome to visit them.
This year, we have a visit from Mad Cap Theatre who will be performing at various sites. The large beer tent with its wide range of real beers and ales, and for a real taste of history, mead, will have live music all day, and possibly a visit from the lovely gypsy dancers. Hunger pangs can be taken care of by a wide range of caterers.
Even Plantagenet King Edward, and his rival for the throne, Queen Margaret of Anjou, welcome visitors to their sumptuous camps. Away from the battle site there is a big and bustling medieval market, full of leather, metal and wood workers, costumiers, jewellers, potters and sellers of all kinds of exotic and unusual goods. Minstrels, jesters, stilt walkers and
Entrance to the festival is free, with a small charge for parking, but please be as generous as you can to the bucket collectors, putting on an event like this is expensive, but we want everyone to be able to join in.
Saturday the fun moves into town, for a very tongue in cheek re-creation of the capture, trial and beheadings of the fleeing Lancastrians.
This is followed by the peaceful service of Complin, held by candlelight in the beautiful Abbey. Sunday sees our large Carnival style parade make its way up the High Street and Church Street on its way to the festival site, starting at 11.15am. Tewkesbury is about 2miles from junction 9 of the M5 and the festival site is signed from all major entrances to the town, please follow the signed route, it has been designed with safety in mind. For further details, including accommodation and our own camp site, just a few minutes walk from the event, visit our web site www.Tewkesbury MedievalFestival.org.
The festival opens at 11am both days, with battles at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. When it closes at 6pm on

Tewkesbury Talk I have often heard the phrase ‘flaming June’ and for many years thought it referred to the weather expected for that month. It was only recently I discovered it was the title of an oil painting by Sir Frederic Leighton, depicting a woman in a bright orange dress.
The model is thought to have been one of two prominent actresses of the day, neither of whom were called June. The Latin name for June is Junius, and one explanation of the origin offered by Ovid is that it is named after the Roman goddess of marriage Juno, wife of Jupiter. I think June is definitely a month for the ladies, including our new Town Mayor, Miss Karen Brennan, her Mayoress Mrs Shelby Powell, and the new Borough Mayor Mrs Gillian Blackwell (Hucclecote).

In addition to celebrating the special day it raised awareness of the need for a replacement play area. With help from the local Friends of Mitton Play Park, Tewkesbury Town Council is hoping to raise £10,000 to provide new equipment and is keen to hear from anyone interested in donating or offering support.
The lady marathon runners - L-R: Kathy Lewis, Helen Gould, Nicky Wood, Helen Guthrie and Linda Coxshall
One great achievement I must mention is that of Kathy Lewis, Helen Gould, Nicky Wood, Helen Guthrie and Linda Coxshall from Tewkesbury All Runners who ran the London Marathon in April and raised over £11,000 for their charities Whizz Kidz, Alzheimer’s and CLIC Sargent. Tewkesbury All Runners offer 10 week running courses suitable for complete beginners and more experienced runners. They meet at the Sea Cadets Hall behind Cascades pool and if you are inspired to join them simply call Kerry on 01452 813611 for more details. A local woman’s extraordinary recovery from cancer has led to her story being used by a number of national organisations. Anne, who lives near Eckington, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012 and given only a few months to live. After a series of unexpected events she has been in remission for three years and is living a normal life, part of which is working as Team Leader at Tewkesbury Library. Anne’s story has been filmed by Macmillan Cancer Care and used for their “Not Alone” campaign. One of Anne’s friends, Howard Wilkie, has organised the ‘Rhythm of Life’ concert at the George Watson Memorial Hall on Sunday 5th June, 3pm, to raise funds for Macmillan. He is the musical director of Solent Male Voice Choir whose repertoire includes songs from the shows, hymns, ballads, folk songs and spirituals. The choir will be joined by other musicians, some local, and Anne will be sharing her story and explaining the wide variety of ways in which Macmillan can help people whose lives are affected by cancer. Some of you may know of the Tewkesbury Country Market which is held in the Town Hall every Friday 9.30am to 12 noon, this is part of a 90-year-old network of around 300 Country Markets across the country, with branches/ co-operatives selling local crafts, produce and refreshments. The producers pride themselves on keeping traditional home cooking,

homegrown and handcrafted items alive. I would strongly recommend that you pop along to the Town Hall, take a look at the lovely array of items and maybe have a cup of tea and a cake. The ladies that run Tewkesbury’s Country Market have also generously sponsored the rose bush flower bed at the 1471 corner in Lower Lode Lane. It’s going to look lovely when the red and white roses come into bloom. Shelby Powell and Karen Brennan spent a very hot Sunday morning digging the bed, and if anyone wishes to sponsor any of the other displays for Tewkesbury in Bloom they should contact Shelby. A street market was held in the High Street at the end of May, where the Alleycats initiative was launched. The aim is to preserve Tewkesbury’s Alleys, restoring them to their former glory, documenting the history, current condition, tales and folklore as well as involving local people in making and siting art within them. Full details can be found on the Facebook page or by emailing tewksalley@outlook.com. The Antiques Road Show arrived in the Abbey Grounds at the end of May, and the Food & Drink Festival will be there at the end of June. Entry fee is £2.50 and with over 60 stalls, live cookery demonstrations, entertainment, games and activities for all the family it will certainly be worth a visit. I won’t be able to get away during the day, but I am looking forward to attending the We Salute You event at the George Watson Hall that evening, 7pm for 8pm start. The show is being staged by Tewkesbury British Legion Club, sponsored by CB Chartered Accountants and is in aid of the Poppy Appeal. Tickets cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door and can be purchased from ourselves at Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts or the British Legion Club. Saturday 2nd July, with local cow artist, Sam Morris. Sam will set up her easel and acrylic tubes of paint in the shop window for the whole day, so passers-by can watch her latest cow painting unfold, transform and develop. Sam will start with a blank canvas and a few ideas and welcomes you to share your ideas and inspiration as you pass-by throughout the day. We hope that this unique window display will make you smile. I must end with the wonderful Connie Cullingford. Connie is 80 years young and a resident of Cypress Road, Wheatpieces. Connie Cullingford and her husband Tony. On 27th July Photo by Shelby Powell she will be doing a wing walk, strapped to the winds of a Tiger Moth, at Staverton to raise funds for Water Aid. She hopes to raise £2,000 and has already reached half that total. After retiring from teaching she and her husband, Tony, volunteered to work overseas and were stationed at a school in Eritrea where women and children were forced to walk miles to find water. If readers would like to make a donation you can contact Connie on 01684 275622 or donate online to www.justgiving. com/connieswingwalk . She also has a Facebook page called "Connie's Wing Walk". As always there are so many things which I have not been able to include in the article but please do keep letting me know of events happening in and around our lovely, lively town. I can be found daily at Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts in the High Street – this month stacking the shelves for Father’s Day on June 19th.
Our second boat trip was on Sunday morning on the Avon to the Fleet - again a glorious trip on a peaceful river. It is planned that these river trips will run throughout the day from the beginning of June. Mike and I are now totally bitten by the boating bug. For now, however, we are occupied planning a "live" painting event "Seen & Herd" on - by Louise Jones

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living
By Katherine Sorrell
consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.
Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they coordinate. If in doubt, consider Page 40
In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual
interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in. Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Gloucestershire Golf Club raises over £200,000 for local hospice Back in 1987 a Cheltenham family started a charity golf day at their local golf club to raise funds for the hospice which provided care to their parents. Some 27 years later the event at Cleeve Hill Golf Club has raised over £200,000 for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, supporting local people and their families at a time they need it most. Founded by the Farrel family in response to the care their parents received at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in 1987, the money raised over the years has helped install new telephone systems so patients could chat to their families, hydraulic beds, new curtains and blinds and much more. Donations from the 2015 tournament secured a hoist for use in the Day Hospice and purchased plants bringing a new centre bed to life in the hospice courtyard which was planted last month. The charity day is a well-known fixture on golfing calendars, and the 28th tournament event takes place this year on Saturday 11th June at Cleeve Hill Golf Club.
The Tewkesbury Farmers & Craft Market has a great mix of local produce from farmers, growers and food producers plus a wonderful collection of local arts and crafts. For information about stalls please contact Dave Joynes, Cotswold Markets on 01386 840138 or email: Trade. CotswoldMarkets@gmail.com
