Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Welcome to the October issue of your local community magazine. As you can see, it is packed full with local events happening in and around the area. This is a fantastic feature, especially as we have another half term holiday to look forward to at the end of the month. Also, with Halloween just around the corner, it’s a time of great excitement for children and adults alike. An event to highlight is Sudeley Castle’s Halloweek, which starts on Monday 23rd October and culminates in a Spooky Spectacular on Sunday 29th October. It promises to be a great week of spooky goings on and scary tales! Of course, we also have the annual Tewkesbury Mop Fair which is being held this year on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th October in Tewkesbury High Street, so don’t miss out! My daughter still has ‘Patches’, the teddy she won at the Tewkesbury Mop Fair 6 years ago when she was 3 years old! If you would like to add an upcoming event to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk and we will be happy to share the event for you. Also, just a thank you to all our readers who support the local businesses within our magazine. If you have a local business and would like to be included in our magazine in November, please call or email us for more information. If you have never had an advert before, that’s no problem, we have an in-house design service and we’ll create your advert for you! Hope you have a great month and see you back here in November! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Cake and Bake Chocolate and Orange Puddings Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream.

Ingredients: • 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, sifted • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice • 2 tsp orange zest • Custard or cream, to serve

Makes 6 Ready in 1 hours 30 mins

TIP

You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds. Page 6

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood

A greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage

Page 14

to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and efficient loss of excess heat. Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the advantage that it can be filled with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’

are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in waterbutt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Autumn Fayre raises £6,500 for hospice Hospice said, “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, which over the past three years has helped raise a staggering £21,000 for our hospice.”

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s Autumn Fayre on Saturday 9th September raised over £6,500 for the charity, which could pay for over 4 00 hours of specialist hospice care. Despite the wet weather conditions, local people and families donned their wellies and waterproofs to take to the grounds of the hospice’s Grade II* listed Cotswold manor house for a day of fun, food, live music and entertainment, all officially opened by the Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Klara Sudbury. As is tradition, Gloucestershire Morris Dancers and guests gave a special performance to close the fayre, rounding off a day of performances throughout Cheltenham where they collected over £1,000 for the hospice thanks to the generosity of local people. Elise Hoadley, Director of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court

“Despite the wet weather it was great to see local families enjoying time together in our hospice grounds, helping raise much-needed funds for our care. We received help from so many people including our fabulous volunteers from the hospice, corporate volunteers who helped get everything in place and friends and volunteers from local groups too.” “Moben Marquees made sure we had some much-needed undercover areas on the day, and our friends at Creed Food Services supplied us with some tasty sausages and burgers for the ever popular BBQ. Our Autumn Fayre is our flagship community fundraising event when we throw open our doors to local people and their families and we are always so touched by the amazing support we receive.”

Court Hospice is a charity and is home to the only inpatient unit in Gloucestershire giving specialist hospice care to people aged 18 and over living with conditions like cancer, heart failure and lung disease alongside its Day Hospice programme and Hospice at Home team. It also offers family and bereavement support, rehabilitation, complementary therapies, spiritual care and befriending. For more information visit www.sueryder.org/leckhampton

Fundraising for Acorns Children's Hospice We are slowly amassing a store of little, knitted animals, ready for next Easter. We have over 200 in hand already, left over from last year. So far this year 146 animals have been knitted, down on this time last year. One or two of our dedicated knitters are experiencing some health problems, so if you are reading this and think you could help by either knitting or stitching up do get in touch and we will provide you with patterns or animals to stitch. Winter and the long dark nights are almost upon us. What better occupation could there be to keep fingers busy and at the same time help a very worthwhile charity?

Sadly we have lost two of our outlets for selling Easter animals. Between them, Store 21 and Tewkesbury Stationers raised £507, both shops have now closed. If anyone has any ideas for new outlets, any suggestions would be welcome. We have to thank all the people who so kindly donated prizes for the tombola stall, held at Birds Farm tea and scone event in June. We managed to raise a good sum including £20 from naming the Teddy. Without your kind generosity, we could not run such a stall. Now for some bad news, I'm afraid. Webb Ivory have ceased trading,

so we can no longer raise funds for Acorns Children's Hospice in this way. Webb Ivory always donated 25% to a named charity. I have contacted ACE, their sister firm but they do not run such a scheme, nor do Studio Cards, so it looks as if we shall not be able to raise money this Christmas. If anyone knows of another company who would be willing to donate 25% (or less) from our orders, do let me know, so far I have drawn a blank.

Home & Interiors Designing A Dressing Room

Many of us yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place, uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, with clothes storage, a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, it may be more efficient to turn a small room, part of a landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? It’s best to measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up

plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-toreach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To create a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist; or use off-the-shelf elements from DIY sheds or storage specialists

By Katherine Sorrell

and make it up yourself. The latter option is cheapest but less flexible, and may not make the best use of your space. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. If wall fittings, dangling pendants or floor lamps are in the way, inset ceiling spotlights are best. Fit enough to ensure the room is brightly lit, particularly if your finishes are dark. If clothes are screened off with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. Ideally, match the style of the dressing room and bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches, to seamlessly blend the rooms together.

Creating a dressing room area in a bedroom If you don’t have space for a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom instead. Use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pull-down hangers and tilting laundry baskets. We all know our passwords probably aren’t strong enough, but remembering complex passwords is difficult. The solution? A password manager. Apps such as 1Password or LastPass create a secure vault to store passwords on your computer, and when they’re needed they’re filled out automatically. Best of all, you can synchronise passwords across your various devices, so a password saved to your computer is available on your phone. Apple offers its service via iCloud Keychain, allowing you to store and sync passwords between Macs, iPads and iPhones. The real benefit of these services is that they generate really strong passwords, so you don’t have to come up with them yourself or remember impossiblesounding combinations of letters and characters. But don’t forget the golden rule: never use the same password on more than one site or service.

Significant grant funding for local rural businesses – available now! Tewkesbury Borough Council is keen to support the efforts of the LEADER programme as they call out for new applications for the programme’s rural business grants. Capital investment grants of up to £100,000 (up to 40% of total costs) are available now for micro/ small businesses, farmers/foresters, growers, community groups and other organisations that can demonstrate a benefit to the local rural economy. To be successful, applications must contribute to the creation of jobs or the development of businesses in the Tewkesbury Borough LEADER rural area. The programme is open for applications for projects which meet its key investment priorities. These are farm productivity; business support/farm diversification; tourism;

culture and heritage and forestry productivity. LEADER is part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). The Forest and Tewkesbury Borough LEADER programme has already allocated £370k of grant funding to 17 businesses across the Forest of Dean and Tewkesbury Borough. The most recent example of grants awarded is for Café au Chocolat in Tewkesbury. Café au Chocolat was awarded £9,467 (40%) towards the capital costs associated with a new artisan chocolate production and retail service. The new service is scheduled to commence in November 2017, and will result in 3 new jobs. The LEADER programme is now looking for further applications. Funding is available on a first come

first served basis with the majority of funds expected to be allocated soon. The next deadline for expressions of interest is 10am on October 9th 2017, with ever decreasing amounts of funding available. Councillor Rob Bird ,Tewkesbury Borough portfolio holder for economic development, added "This is a 'once only' opportunity for local rural businesses to get financial support with expansion projects, but the time-frame is very short, and the total funding available is limited, so I urge anyone with business development plans to act now and contact us." If you are thinking of applying to the LEADER programme, please contact Neil Batt, Programme Manager, as soon as possible on neil.batt@fdean.gov.uk or 01594 812608 to avoid missing out. Further details and application forms are also available on the website www.forestandtewksleader.co.uk
