From the Editor Hello Reader,
Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Welcome to the November issue of the Tewkesbury Magazine. This month will once again see many events take place in the area but before I start, I would like to congratulate everyone who was involved in organising this year’s Mop Fair. People from all over the UK flocked to town for this fantastic two day event. It just gets better and better every year! October saw the last half term holiday before the Christmas break and we are now steadily steering towards the end of the year, but for now let’s concentrate on what’s ahead of us and remember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes Night is back to bring us bonfires and fireworks – make sure you dress up warmly when you go out and don’t forget to keep your pets as far away from the noise as possible. Your vet can help with advice and medication for your pet so do give them a call. Another major event in November is Remembrance Sunday on 8th November. The Royal British Legion is hoping to once again raise millions with their Poppy Appeal, and this month you’ll see the theme of our front covers is centred around Remembrance Day – please support the Royal British Legion in any way you can. This month, BBC Children in Need also raises much needed funds. Their Appeal Night will be live on BBC One on 13th November. Many schools, nurseries, playgroups, workplaces and shops in the area will be raising funds for this worthy cause – it will be a week of non-stop fun! If you have an event planned to raise money for Children in Need or any other charity, then don’t forget to email your story and pictures to office@glosdirectories.co.uk so that we can include them in the next issue. Best wishes,
Vicky Muller

Specialist Valuation Day A special antiques and collectables valuation event will be taking place soon in your area. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Monday 16th November, 11am to 3pm, at The Wheatpieces Community Centre, Columbine Road, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, GL20 7SP (free parking subject to availability).
There will be experts providing valuations on the following types of collectables: Coins (including British & World, sovereigns, Krugerrands, Royal Mint commemoratives & proof sets), stamps, banknotes, medals & militaria, antiques, clocks, watches, jewellery, gold, silver, pre1900 documents/books & maps, cigarettecards, postcards, pre-1960 sporting programmes & tickets, scientific instruments, swords, bayonets & de-activated weapons. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. Page 8
These valuation days have proven to be very popular in the past, and we have conducted hundreds of them across the UK. Some of the best items we have auctioned were brought to us at these events, such as two pieces of Russian 17th century enamelled silverware, a bowl and a lidded pot, which we later sold on behalf of the owners for over £75,000. One of the most interesting items we have sold recently was a fragment of pennant flag believed to have been carried by the army of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. This was featured on television, and in newspapers nationwide. Sold for £2800 as a speculative item, the feeling was strong overall that the story behind the flag is true. It was nice to handle a topical item such as this. (Coins of Richard III do very well also!) If you have any questions feel free to contact Lockdales’ Martlesham offices: 01473 627110, sales@lockdales.com. For further information see our website www.lockdales.com

Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.
The Success Destroyer Most of my working life is spent helping people to be happy and successful. My work is primarily in the corporate, private and public sectors, from the individual to the multi-national. I state this not as an ego trip, but as a firm foundation for you, my reader, to understand and take on board the magnitude of this message. There is not a successful or happy person in the world who consciously or subconsciously is not aware of the ruthless power of the success destroyer. It is a foul disease caught easily, highly infectious and can be difficult to eradicate once established. This foul destroyer is negativity, in all its various guises. This manifests itself with negative thinking, negative self-talk, negative communication, negative body language and a thirst for bad news coupled with enjoyment from other's misfortunes. Some sufferers spend an inordinate part of their life criticising, condemning and complaining. It is really very easy to find fault, but requires a bit of effort and imagination to find a better way. Very little criticism is constructive, mostly it is destructive. We all thrive on a little constructive criticism, but this can be “Oh so rare and caring”.
The world we live in is challenging though wonderful. Unfortunately, the balance is going wrong with so much news delivered to us 24 hours a day, and by its very nature news is normally bad. My brother Robin used to say “no news is good news”. Of course news and awareness of some of the horrors of the world can help to alleviate it or encourage action. The balance goes wrong however when there is little or no news, so it becomes sensationalised or contorted and exaggerated so everything becomes a disaster or crisis and we then become desensitised. So do make an effort to bring the pendulum back into balance. Be aware of the evil power of the negative and start by leading a life that is more positive and only allow the negative to play a small part of your life’s journey. So a few tips to get started: 1. The drink in the pub becomes half full, not half empty 2. Tomorrow will be partly sunny, not partly cloudy 3. When asked how you are, never again say “not too bad, thank you”. How about “I’m feeling ok”, “I’m feeling fine” or “I’m feeling good, thank you”. When we say “not too bad, thank you” we are implying either that we are normally bad, or we are surprised that we are not bad. Peugeot helps get Teenagers behind the wheel Peugeot has made it easier for teenagers in Gloucestershire to get behind the wheel by making its unique ‘Just Add Fuel®’ scheme available to 18-20 year olds for the very first time from local Dealerships, Warners’ of Gloucester and Warners’ of Tewkesbury. From September, young drivers will be able to benefit from the Peugeot Just Add Fuel® initiative on the Peugeot 108, due to a clever advanced telematics device which attaches to the on-board diagnostic port and tracks driver behaviour. Previously only available to drivers aged 21 or older, Peugeot has made strides in the motor industry by making the inclusive package available for young drivers on the Peugeot 108. Since its launch over five years ago, more than 27,000 people have taken advantage of Peugeot’s Just Add Fuel®. The innovative, fixed-cost motoring package ensures a single monthly payment which allows customers to leave the
showroom with three years’ insurance, servicing, road tax, warranty and roadside assistance for their vehicle. High on style, space and practicality, the Peugeot 108 is packed with a range of easy-to-use technology to improve life on the road. Offering an abundance of choice, drivers can choose from eight paint finishes, four interior ambiences and seven stylish themes on the 108. Marc Warner, Dealer Principal said: “Over the last five years, the Just Add Fuel® scheme has been recognised as a significant innovation in vehicle retailing and this has now been extended to help get first time drivers on the road in Gloucestershire. The Peugeot 108 is priced from just £248 rental per month and no initial payment is required. The monthly payments can be improved depending on variables like the amount of deposit paid, location, etc.
Just Add Fuel® with telematics is also available to Peugeot 108 buyers aged 21-75 who do not have two years’ no claims discount, or have held a full UK driver’s license for less than two years. Despite being part of the new car retailing landscape for five years, Just Add Fuel® remains unique to Peugeot and its customers. For more information or for details on any of the models in the Peugeot range, please contact Warners’ of Gloucester on 01452 529755 or visit the Dealership on Eastern Avenue, Gloucester. Super Mario Kart - For Real Iain Betson now knows where they took the inspiration for the video game. Apologies if you’re an Italian reading this; I have no wish to confirm cultural stereotypes. You know the type: Americans are loud, Germans disciplined, we Brits are stuffy. But, sorry Italy, when it comes to you and motorised road transport, the two of you should never have met. I love your food, your weather, your style, but boy am I scared of your driving! This year, our family holiday was spent on the Amalfi coast. The temperature never dipped below 34°C, the lemon trees groaned under the weight of their fruit and the Limoncello tasted divine. But whenever I ventured out of the hotel, I felt I was taking my life in my hands.
Page 14
Our original plan was to hire a car in Naples, but a quick search strongly advised to the contrary. Confirmation that this was the right decision came within three minutes of being picked up at the airport. Scooters and cars observed no lane discipline, horns were used incessantly and the breaking of speed limits by large margins was commonplace. Every car boasted dents, scuffs and/or missing wing mirrors, I saw a Chevrolet Spark being driven around town even though it had been involved in a major front-end smash, and the buses appeared to have emerged from a wartorn country. Italy: home to Ferrari with its prancing horse, Lamborghini’s bull and Maserati’s Neptune’s trident badge - perhaps these logos are subtle nods that Italy should stick to four-legged road transport or put its faith in the Gods when it comes to moving around safely. Ciao for now!

You can come out now Veterinary Practices routinely send out reminders whenever your pet’s boosters are due. At Folly Gardens, we know how easy it is to put them to one side and then forget about them. Unfortunately, studies have shown your pet’s immunity will fade if booster vaccinations are not given at regular intervals. If this has happened, it may mean that vaccinations need to be re-started with a complete new course. If you’re in that situation, then here’s a special incentive to get your pet’s vaccination status back up to date. During October and November, dogs and cats can get up to date with their vaccinations for the price of a booster. They will require two injections, 3-4 weeks apart, and of course, at Folly Gardens Vets, your pet will also receive a full health check at the same time. In Tewkesbury and surrounding villages, our main concern is the Leptospirosis portion of the vaccine which is carried by rats and can be passed to humans. It is often found in stagnant or flood water, around bird feeders or chicken pens. We’ll be running other offers during the course of the promotion, which you can find out more about in practice or on our Facebook page.

She has recently been invested as Gloucestershire’s Lord-Lieutenant’s Cadet for the coming year. John Badham on Tewkesbury in Bloom Results
This weekend Marion and I, together with Pete and Chris Aldridge, are off to Sunderland to the finals of the Britain in Bloom competition. By the time this article is published the truth of what we have achieved will be known. Those of you who attend our great jamboree in the Watson Hall on October 19th will know it all. I must admit it is an awfully long trip - over 500 miles. However, whatever happens it will be worth it. This is mainly because whatever the result we have had a truly wonderful year!
Never before have we been in the national competition. Bear in mind that this alone makes Tewkesbury one of the best seven towns in the whole of the United Kingdom. I hear you say only one of the top seven! If we are really lucky we will get a Gold Award - many finalists don't achieve this.
cadet from 785 (Tewkesbury) Squadron to be selected for this role in 22 years”. The RAF Air Cadets offer opportunities such as flying, sports, target shooting, adventure training as well as BTEC’s in Aviation and Public Services and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Squadron in Tewkesbury, based in Red Lane, is currently recruiting and meets on Monday and Thursday evenings from 7.30pm9.30pm. For more details ring 01684 290777, email oc.785@aircadets.org or visit their website www.785sqn.com Ledbury got a very impressive Silver Guilt a few years ago, such an outcome for us would certainly be very creditable. However, we still hope for more! There is a small chance that we end up with Best in Category (something we have achieved twice in as many years in the regional competition). If this unlikely outcome happens, we will end up in the champions of champions group. That I would have to admit would be quite challenging, (to put it mildly!) but like all challenges we would of course step up to it. There are enormous advantages in being known throughout the whole country for our blooming excellence improved morale, more visitors, civic pride to mention a few. Moreover, some Tewkesbury businesses have
even been awarded Gold in the Heart of England competition in their own right - the Bell and the Abbey Tea Rooms. All this is is great for the town and its reputation. However, in my opinion the real success has been our amazing community effort. So many have worked hard and they more than anyone deserve this success. Thank you for all you have done and let us keep our fingers cross (and perhaps our toes too) and maybe next week we will have some even more terrific news. At least let us hope so!

Autumn Planning and Planting by Pippa Greenwood There is no doubt that the main growing season is over for the year and autumn is now very much with us, which makes it a perfect time to review exactly how your garden looks at this time of year and to do some planning and planting too. If everything is looking a bit glum, why not make sure that for years to come you have many rich autumnal shades of orange, red, yellow and gold to brighten things up? There are numerous trees, shrubs and climbers with brilliant autumn colour and now is the perfect time for planting, as the soil should still be relatively warm and considerably more moist than it was during summer. It is also a perfect time to shop for plants which you can enjoy at this time of year, giving you the chance to see the plants ‘in the flesh’ and find out which individual tints and hues you find the most attractive. Make sure that you check the growing requirements of the trees and shrubs you choose carefully and ensure that you can supply them with exactly what they need, as soil and site conditions can hugely influence autumn colour. For instance, one of my real favourites is the sweet gum or Liquidambar but this is unlikely to produce the striking colour for which it is renowned if planted in a relatively shallow soil over Page 18
chalk. You should also try to choose a relatively sheltered site for plants grown for autumn colour, avoiding the most windswept areas where strong winds will rapidly knock the leaves from the shrub or tree just when the plant has come into the best of its autumnal shades. The ultimate choice of plants will be largely determined by the conditions in and the size of your garden, so a trip to your local garden centre is worthwhile. The Japanese crimson glory vine (Vitis coignetiae) is a fabulous ornamental vine which can grow to a height of 90 feet, so can be used to train over trees or large buildings. Its toothed leaves turn a range of purple, crimson and reddish-orange colours in autumn. Some viburnums, including Viburnum dentatum, also have lovely autumn colours and for bright yellow autumn foliage then the witch hazels (Hamamelis and Fothergilla) are some of my favourites, although they prefer an acid soil. The numerous maples, particularly the Japanese maples, not only bring vibrant colours into your garden during autumn but being relatively small or very slow growing are suitable for most plots. There are lots of different types of Acer palmatum which
bring lovely colour, including Acer palmatum ‘Lutesens’, which turns a rich yellowish gold, ‘Crimson Queen’, ‘Trompenburg’, ‘Garnet’ and ‘Seiryu’, ‘Osakazuki’, ‘Orange Dream’, ‘Heptalobum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum’ and Acer palmatum ‘dissectum atropurpureum’, and also the beautiful leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Beni-Shidare’. Whatever you choose it is important to make sure that the plants’ root balls are thoroughly watered and teased out, before being placed in a well prepared planting hole. Plant at the correct depth, so that the shrub or tree is buried to the same depth as it was whilst in the compost. Always keep the soil just moist around the roots, both now and throughout next year, to help them get well established so you can enjoy them for years to come. Make vegetable growing fun and productive with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select your vegetable plants from www. pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May; what makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week with lots of tips and help about what you’re growing, ensuring great results. It is great value and various pack sizes are available, e.g. up to 55 plants for just £29.00, plus that weekly advice. Gifts Cards are also available.

MARTIN LEWIS Mortgages
By Martin Lewis @moneysavingexpert
This is a crucial warning for anyone with a mortgage. Mortgage rates are at historic lows, but the window to take advantage looks to be slamming shut. The Bank of England Governor has said he believes UK interest rates will rise from their six-year slumber at 0.5% before the end of this year.
2. Benchmark your cheapest deal at speed.
If that happens, today’s rates will look cheap as chips. So everyone with an outstanding home loan should be checking now to see if they can do better – and possibly lock in at a dirt-cheap rate ahead of possible rises.
Recently we’ve seen two-year fixed deals (for those with low LTVs) plummet to almost one per cent - that’s unthinkably cheap and longer fixes and variable deals are at or near historic lows too.
The potential savings here are huge - here’s a tweet I got from Christopher on the back of warning about this. “Sorted - my monthly repayments fell from £785 to £533." So let me run you through the 8 things you need to know.
Yet a host of factors affect what your cheapest deal is, the easy route’s using a comparison site. Just plug in your home’s value, the amount you want to borrow and other details and it should list what’s likely to be available to you.
1. Check your current deal.
Some sites only list deals available to brokers, missing out some lenders, including HSBC, Tesco Bank and First Direct. So it's worth checking a comparison site that includes direct-only deals. These include my own mse.me/mortgagebestbuys, and totallymoney.com’s mortgage tool.
A mortgage is the biggest expenditure most people have, so I'm always slightly surprised that when asked, not everyone knows their rate and details. Check now that you know… a. The current rate: And monthly repayment and amount outstanding. b. Type: Is it a fix, tracker, discount or SVR (standard variable rate, ie, bog standard bank rate)? c. Deal deadline: If it's a short-term deal, such as a twoyear fix, when does it end? d. Term: How long is it, for example, 25 years, and when it must be fully repaid by. e. Penalties: Are there any penalties if you repay or leave early? f. Your loan-to-value (LTV): The proportion of your home's current value you are borrowing. As an example, £80,000 on a £100,000 property means an 80% LTV. The lower the LTV, the better deal you can get, so if your home’s increased in value you may gain, even without other changes (both Nationwide.co.uk and Halifax.co.uk have tools showing the rough change in prices in your area).
3. Fees can be £1,000s - factors them in. The smaller your mortgage, the bigger the impact fees have, especially for mortgages under £100,000. This can skew which is cheapest for you. So you should always incorporate the fees – do this by spreading them over the fixed or tracker period (as after you may shift again to another deal). Eg, £1,000 of fees over two years is £1,000 / 24 = £42 a month. To help, the comparison at www.mse.me/mortgagebestbuys does this for you, so you can see the real cost of different mortgages side by side.
If this is all gooblydegook, my free printed www.mse.me/remortgageguide booklet can take you through it in detail. Please mention Tewkesbury Magazine when responding to advertisers
Page 25
4. How much can you save? Now you know your rate and what's out there, work out the potential savings. I’ve eight tools to home in on the right answer for you at mse.me/mortgagecalc, including help comparing two mortgages and estimating if you should ditch your fix. 5. Can you afford a cheaper mortgage? 15 months ago mortgage affordability checks were introduced to stop people borrowing beyond their means – I believe that’s definitely the right move for those getting new borrowing or extending existing debts. Yet, perversely, most lenders (and from March all lenders) are forced to apply these rules to those trying to switch deal too, leading to some being told "you can't afford to get a cheaper rate”. This is something I’m lobbying to try and get changed. Yet you need to be aware. Lenders will check you can afford your mortgage if rates hit 6-7%. They also want evidence of income, big bills and expenses, even eating out, so be frugal in the months before applying to make your situation look as good as it can. 6. Should I get a fix or tracker/discount? With a fixed mortgage, the amount you repay is, er, fixed, so it's like buying an insurance policy against possible rate rises. Variable deals move with UK interest rates – sometimes at the provider's whim. Currently you only pay a touch more to fix.
too. But ask the broker how much using them will cost and if they check all deals available to them, not just a panel of lenders. Some phone only brokers like lcplc.co.uk are fee-free, just getting commission from lenders - others charge fees like Which.co.uk (£499), but can cover a wider range of products. If you want face-to-face help, then ask friends for local recommendations or use unbiased.co.uk or vouchedfor.co.uk. 8. Is your credit score good enough? These days it isn’t just about getting the best mortgage, but the best that’ll accept you. Credit scoring plays a huge part of that, and managing your credit worthiness months in advance is part of the task. I’ve 36 tips in my www.mse.me/creditrating guide, but some key ones include a) Ensure you’re on the electoral role, via gov.uk/register-to-vote b) Never withdraw cash on credit cards. c) Never miss a repayment on anything – even late payments hurt d) Check your credit files at Equifax.co.uk, Experian.co.uk and Callcredit for errors – you have a statutory right to do this for £2 e) Avoid payday loans like the plague (both for your credit score and your financial health). f) Avoid other applications, such as credit cards and contract mobiles, just before applying.
Predicting future interest rate moves is difficult – though pundits think the general direction’s up, the question’s just how quickly. So instead focus on your finances. The more crucial the security of knowing exactly what you'll pay, the more you should edge towards fixing - and fixing longer. If a rock-bottom deal's your driver, edge to short-term trackers if cheaper. 7. Mortgage brokers can help boost acceptance. You can, and often should, use a broker to help you find the right deal. They have info unavailable to consumers, eg, lenders' credit and affordability criteria. A good broker can ease acceptance by matching you to the right deal - and the mortgage interview's quicker

Home & Interiors Buying a Bespoke Kitchen
If you have an awkwardly shaped room or want more than one-size-fits-all options, then your obvious choice is a custom-made kitchen. Buying a bespoke kitchen is like asking a tailor to make you a dress - you get a unique and perfectly fitting outfit that makes the most of your best bits and disguises the worst. It’s attractive, comfortable and, whilst more costly, it will always look good and should last a lifetime. In kitchen terms, this means that a bespoke commission can cope with wonky walls, strange dimensions and interesting architectural features, will adapt to whatever’s required of it, whether chaotic family meals or haute cuisine dinner parties, and will use high quality materials that will stand the test of time. What’s more, you’re guaranteed that it’s one of a kind.
Why buy bespoke?
With an off-the-peg kitchen your choices are limited to a selection of door styles, carcass
sizes and worktops, but that’s about it. If your wall is a few centimetres longer than the standard run of cupboards, you’ll end up with a gap. It might be called a tray slot or space for a pull-out towel rail, but it’s still a gap. A bespoke kitchen, on the other hand, will be built to the exact dimensions of the room, and can include extra-high base units, extra-deep worktops and a combination of different materials. You can choose the type of timber or the colour of the paint, and you can specify any worktop, handle or appliance you like - even special matching sockets can be fitted. As managing director and chief designer Andrew Hall, of Woodstock Furniture, says: ‘The beauty of a bespoke kitchen design service is that you end up with an ergonomic, cohesive and unified space that is completely unique and tailored to your individual needs.’
All in the detail
With a bespoke kitchen, no detail is spared. It may be the dovetailing of the drawers or the way veneers are matched so they run perfectly across from one cupboard or drawer to the next. It may be the combination of base and wall
By Katherine Sorrell
cupboards, perhaps with open shelves and free-standing dressers; or it may be the size and shape of the island unit. Special appliances or cooking utensils can be measured and interiors designed to suit, for the ultimate, ‘everything in its place’ room that combines good looks with functionality.
Working with a designer
Before contacting a bespoke kitchen company, start by considering what type of kitchen you want; otherwise, the possibilities could be overwhelming. Many people find it helpful to keep a scrapbook of designs they like. That said, an experienced designer will be able to guide you through the maze of choices, asking the right questions about your style and how you use your kitchen in order to reach the best design. There will be one or more site visits for consultations, planning and measuring up, followed by drawings and costings. Once you have approved these, it will take several weeks or even months for your furniture to be hand-built and, during this time, you should complete any structural work. Then your units will be fitted by an expert team and templates made for worktops and splashbacks – which will then be made to measure. Finally, there’s likely to be a sign-off visit to fine-tune any problems and check that you’re happy with the result.

Tewkesbury Talk "Autumn is marching on: even the scarecrows are wearing dead leaves." - Otsuyu Nakagawa I can’t recall seeing too many scarecrows around, but there are certainly plenty of dead leaves. I love the reds, yellows and browns they are so pretty – I am not too keen on having to rake them all up though, especially on a windy day! Isn’t it amazing how quickly the trees and hedgerows change from full of colour to drab and bare, and as the plants lose their covers we need to put on ours – we are certainly seeing an upturn in the sale of woolly scarves! The colour in the streets is being maintained with the flower planters having their summer displays removed and replaced with fresh new winter ones by volunteers organised by Tewkesbury in Bloom, supported and sponsored by local people and businesses. Pansies, violas and bulbs are to be added to the High Street barrels and coronets, as well as the beautiful larger displays at The Crescent, Back of Avon and Newtown flowerbeds which should bring a welcome splash of colour during the colder winter months. always a humbling event. The end of the month sees the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Switch-on on Sunday 22nd November. Once again organisers have been lucky enough to secure the services of Father Christmas to flick the switch. As in previous years the High Street will be closed to traffic and filled with market stalls, fairground entertainment, music and various street artists. The organisation of the event is done by volunteers, but there are many other costs involved which amount to about £6,000. Whilst fundraising goes on year round additional support is always needed. One way you can help this year is by buying a Memory Bulb. Forms will be available at many local shops in town, or you may wish to give a donation by going to the Just Giving website at https:// crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ tewkesbury-christmas-lights. The end of the month sees the Roses’ annual pantomime start; this year it is Cinderella. The promise is that ‘this year’s enchanting panto will transport you to a magical world of music, mayhem and unadulterated fun’. It sounds fantastic! My only regret is that my son is 23 and I really don’t think he is that interested in going to a pantomime. If you would like to go it is strongly recommended that you book in advance either at www. rosestheatre.org or by calling the Box Office team on 01684 295074. The pantomime runs from Saturday 28th November – Saturday 2nd January inclusive. I noticed from Facebook that according to Trip Advisor Tewkesbury Museum are now 3rd on the list of 19 things to do in Tewkesbury, a great achievement for all the
volunteers and trustees who work very hard on making the museum an engaging place to visit. Currently the Museum is running a series of winter lectures where local people talk mostly about local history. Tuesday10th November Don Freeman is taking a historical walk down Swilgate Road and Tuesday 24th November Steve Goodchild is talking about Workhouses and Bridewells; local and national. These are both held in the Trinity Church Hall at 7.00pm. Admission is £3.00, which includes tea and cake! In the Museum, winter opening hours start at the beginning of November, which will be Saturday, Sunday and Monday only, and the next exhibition, to support Remembrance Day, will be about Tewkesbury’s contribution to war efforts. The Medieval Festival parade is being remembered at an event in the British Legion, at 8.00pm on Tuesday 3rd November when the official video of the parade will be ‘launched’ with a screening. It has been produced as a labour of love by Colin Bell’s team (who filmed the making of the Arrivall sculpture) and will be on sale for £5.00, to support the prostate cancer charity Men United. On 4th November Costa in the High Street are holding a 'Night Before Christmas' event from 6pm - 8pm. The children from Mitton Manor Primary School will be singing carols from 6pm - 7pm, and there will be an opportunity to sample some of the café's new cakes and treats. Everyone is welcome to go along. After that there will be local school choirs singing every Saturday at Costa in the lead up to Christmas.
For those of you interested in testing your knowledge then the Flower Guild Quiz is being held on Friday 6th November, tickets £6 to include supper in aid of the Abbey General Fund. Please telephone 01684 276487 or e-mail bertiehazel@ talktalk.net for more details. Tuesday 17th November sees a CID Make-up and Charity evening at Bredon Star Rugby Club. The event is hosted by ELL Hair Studio and tickets cost £15. 50% of all proceeds are being donated to The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Contact ELL on 01684 275005 for more information and your ticket. I cannot end without mentioning the lovely meal we had for Michael’s birthday. Michael’s great great grandfather came originally from Tewkesbury Food at My Great by (Jeynes Row Grandfathers Michael Protheroe. according to the census) and so it seemed apt that for his birthday we went to 'My Great Grandfathers Restaurant' in Church Street. The atmosphere was delightful, warm and welcoming. The service was friendly and very efficient, and the food definitely lived up to its reputation. We had a lovely evening and will certainly find another excuse to return in the not too distant future. Remember if you would like me to mention any event please pop and see me, I can be found daily at Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts, 7 High Street. - by Louise Jones

Tewkesbury Christmas Lights We often think that Christmas starts too early but just as we start planning for our summer holidays in the depths of winter, we do have to make plans for Christmas whilst the sun is shining and we are enjoying the long days of summer. This is very true in respect of the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights which many consider to be the very best in Gloucestershire. Throughout the summer, bookings are being taken for the market stalls and the administration for planning the switch on is underway to make sure that everything is in place for the day. This year the lights will be switched on by Father Christmas on Sunday 22nd November. The High Street will be filled with over 70 markets stalls, the funfair will be there to provide entertainment along with Steve Kaos the Stilt-walker, the
Tewkesbury Town Training Band and the Ukuladies ukulele group. Although we have the assistance of Rifina, our local electrical distributor on the Alexander Way estate, who looks after the lights during the year, we have to make sure that they all work and are electrically safe and arrange for them to be put up and taken down. We do have expenses to cover a variety of costs that are involved with them. We do make sure that the fixings are tested, the road closure is signposted, the road is cleaned afterwards, St John Ambulance is in attendance, the insurance is in place, and we have to hire the equipment. The cost is in the region of £6000 and we work hard to raise this money – you can help us by buying a Memory Bulb. Forms are available at many of the
shops in town. You can also give a donation by going to our Just Giving website at: https:// crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ tewkesbury-christmas-lights We look forward to seeing you there on Sunday 22nd November. - by Andrew Turner, Chairman of the Christmas Lights committee

Finance Boost Your Income in Time for Christmas By Ann Haldon
With Christmas fast approaching it’s worthwhile trying to boost your income to cover some of the cost rather than over-using your credit card. So to avoid a huge bill in January and get the New Year off to a good start, try one or two of these ideas and generate some extra cash. Use cashback sites when buying your presents If you like to shop online at Christmas, you might be surprised by just how much cash you can get back when using sites such as Quidco and TopCashBack. There’s no charge to sign up, and depending on the item purchased you can get between 3% and 10% of your money back. Generate extra cash on eBay and Amazon Not only will you declutter and make space for the next influx of presents, selling items online can generate some much-needed extra money at this time of year. There are hundreds of eBay categories, and once you get into a routine of photographing and describing your items, it’s possible to significantly boost your Christmas budget. Amazon is great for selling books, CDs and DVDs that
you no longer want, but they also offer hundreds of different item categories within their marketplace. If you have a lot of books to sell it can be quicker to list them on Amazon rather than eBay, as all you need to do is input the ISBN or title. The site then searches for the book and automatically adds postage, so all you need to do is write a short description. Use the popularity of local Facebook pages Many people use Facebook to sell goods locally. It works like a classified ad – you list your item and local people come round to view it before purchasing with cash. The local online groups are run by volunteers, and the listing is free-of-charge which saves you money in comparison with eBay and Amazon. Become a mystery shopper If you’ve got time to spare, this can be a lucrative sideline and offers a great deal of variety. Depending on the mystery shopping company, you could be carrying out a covert visit to a store, ordering a sandwich in Subway or checking out the service in your local bank. You’ll need to fill in a report online following each visit, and photograph or scan your receipts as proof that you’ve
carried it out. Make sure that you read the instructions thoroughly before you set out, however, as you won’t get paid if you don’t follow them to the letter. Turn your hobby into a business The UK arts and crafts scene has risen massively in popularity, and there is a range of websites where you can sell your items. Folksy is one of the biggest of these in the UK, and offers lots of help to set up your account. If you prefer to sell in person, however, try a Christmas craft fair in your local area – there should be lots of trade and it helps that people can see the quality of items first-hand. You’ll probably find that your local school or garden centre hold a craft event leading up to Christmas. Alternatively, bigger venues such as National Trust properties or stately homes in your area are also popular locations for craft fairs all year round. These are just a few ideas for boosting your income – try picking one or two and you might find that you’ve got some money to spare in January. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/family/make-money

Roses Theatre Opens Doors To A Promising Future After a summer of extensive renovations, Tewkesbury’s much awaited new arts centre is now open. Months of fundraising, planning, and construction has come to fruition and the next chapter of The Roses Theatre has begun. For the past three months the building has been enclosed in scaffolding as work carried out apace to complete the refurbishment. Worcestershire based Architects Poole Phillips and contractors Matthews Construction have worked tirelessly to ensure this momentous change was realised to its full potential. The £850,000 project has been funded by The Arts Council, Tewkesbury Council, Gloucestershire Environmental Trust, and Barnwood among other trusts, alongside a wealth of local business support. The Roses states that the project has only been feasible thanks to the generous support of audiences and local residents who have contributed massively towards the developments. Director Deborah Rees says: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our supporters. Well over 3,000 people have individually donated to this project as well as support from local trusts and businesses. We
could not have achieved any of this without this amazing support.” A prominent triumph was the much publicised buy a brick campaign which has raised the theatre tens of thousands of pounds, and took the fundraising campaign within sight of reaching its target. As a result theatre staff took the opportunity to expand the development works to include the auditorium, and as such audiences have been greeted by a newly carpeted and redecorated auditorium which was not included within the original plan. Visitors have been noticing a tremendous difference as soon as they enter the modernised building; the foyer has been extended into a light and airy atrium which will hit guests with its wow factor decor and contemporary ambience. The new downstairs coffee bar, Cotteswold Coffee @ The Roses, sells a tempting collection of delicious cakes, pastries, coffees, teas and refreshments, the toilets have been completely overhauled, the auditorium has been repainted and a new carpet installed, the upstairs bar will be serving pre show meals, and a brand new heating system has been established.
but the staff body will also grow as the redevelopment will create several employment opportunities for the local community and beyond. New coffee shop and box office clerks have already settled in to their new roles, but there will be more exciting opportunities for job seekers in the near future. While the theatre itself was closed to the public, live and film events were held at The Watson Hall and Victoria Pleasure Gardens as it was still important to provide the local communities with the diverse programme of entertainment they expect from The Roses. Staff offices have also been modernised and they are all very impressed with the new facilities and working environment. All at The Roses are very much looking forward to sharing the astounding transformation with those who are yet to visit and they are feeling optimistic about the promising new future for the arts centre.
Not only has the building itself been expanded and updated,

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
The only known photograph of the death sentence being passed in an English court.
On 13th August 1964, Gwynne Owen and Peter Allen were hanged for the robbery and murder of a van driver. Owen was a mentally unstable drifter, Allen a feckless petty criminal. The murder was out of character, and most observers were surprised when they weren’t reprieved. But their case wasn’t all that unusual, and didn’t attract any more than the usual amount of media attention. There was, though, one extraordinary thing about Owen and Allen: they were the last people in Britain to be executed. On 8th November 1965 a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Labour backbencher Sidney Silverman received the royal assent, and hanging was abolished. This didn’t come out of the blue. Capital punishment had become extremely unpopular and its abolition was mostly welcomed by the public. Three high-profile miscarriages of justice – or perceived miscarriages of justice – had gone some way towards discrediting the idea and, to undermine it further, the public had lost confidence in the way the Home Office decided who should live and who should die. The first of the three cases was a straightforward wrongful conviction. In March 1950 Timothy Evans was hanged for the murder of his daughter
Geraldine; it subsequently emerged that both she and her mother Beryl were actually victims of John Christie, who murdered eight women in his west London house of horrors – 10 Rillington Place – between 1943 and 1953. The other two cases were more controversial. Derek Bentley was hanged in January 1953 for the murder of a policeman during a burglary. The actual shooter, Christopher Craig, was a minor and got life. Bentley was 19 and got death. Then in July 1955 28-year-old Ruth Ellis was hanged for shooting dead her violent boyfriend outside a Hampstead pub. He had beaten and deserted her, and she was in a hysterical and desperate state when she finally snapped. Both were guilty. But both had the public’s sympathy, and people expected them to be reprieved as nearly half of all convicted murderers were. And when no reprieves came, what really infuriated public opinion was that the decisions had been taken behind closed doors by Home Office officials on legal considerations alone without regard to public feeling. The outcry was such that the number of death sentences actually carried out thereafter fell to a trickle: in 1964 Owen and Allen were the rope’s only victims. Harold Wilson, Prime Minister
from October 1964, had long been a campaigner against hanging and supported Silverman to the hilt. The bill was intended to last five years – as, indeed, had two previous identical bills introduced by Silverman – and it wasn’t until December 1969 that it was made permanent and the hangman’s rope was finally put away forever. As many had predicted, abolition was followed by a steep climb in the murder rate, clearly proving that hanging had the deterrent effect its supporters claimed for it. But then the murder rate flattened out, then it soared again, then after peaking at over 1,000 in 2002 it halved in 10 years. Hard to say anything definitive about deterrence from a rollercoaster like that! What we have learned, though, is that the number of wrongful convictions such as those of the Birmingham Six is frighteningly high: one can’t help wondering just how many of those hanged before 8th November 1965 had done nothing wrong? There are, of course, some who maintain that the deterrent effect of hanging is so important that it really doesn’t matter that, inevitably, a few innocents will be killed; they might reconsider, perhaps, if they found themselves in Timothy Evans’s place!

Movember: Because Men’s Health Matters
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
MOVEMBER.COM changing the face of mens health
Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache. What is MoveMber? The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”. The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems. So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries. “In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder. Why Focus on Men’s health? In 2011, the average UK life expectancy was 82.6 years for women but just 78.7 years for men, who were 14% more likely
to get cancer and 32% more likely to die from it. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in 25-49 year olds, but highly curable. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point. The Foundation believes the main reasons for men’s poor health are: • Lack of awareness and understanding of men’s health issues • Men’s reluctance to discuss their health and feelings or take action when they’re unwell • Engaging in risky activities • Mental health stigmas The Foundation’s most recent research showed that 99% of Movember participants talked to someone about their health, 75% were more aware of potential health issues and 62% had seen a doctor, or intended to, to discover their ‘key numbers’. the MoveMber Foundation’s advice For Men Know your key numbers – ‘one of the most important things you can do,’ whatever your age. Track your body mass index, weight, waistline measurement, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose levels. Know your family history – including illnesses suffered by family members who have passed away. Keep moving – maintain (or
work up to) 20-30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 2-3 days a week, avoid sitting for too long and stay on the move. take action early – ‘Early diagnosis is often key to living a healthy life’. if there’s nothing wrong, your mind is put at rest. Attend that prostate examination and check your testes regularly (http://www.yourprivates.org.uk/ provides a useful guide). don’t smoke- smoking doubles heart disease risk and makes you 20 times more likely to develop lung cancer. eat well – think moderation and variety. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts and minerals, and avoid foods and drinks with added sugars or high saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and salt. sleep well – lack of sleep and poor quality sleep can damage your immune system and increase appetite and vulnerability to stress. stay mentally healthy – spend time doing things you find enjoyable and relaxing. Be proactive about your mental health. drink alcohol only in moderation Wear sunscreen – and check skin changes with your doctor. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically increases melanoma survival rates. To find out more, visit https:// uk.movember.com/
