Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Welcome to the November issue of your local community magazine. Inside we have plenty of interesting articles to read and lots of local events happening in and around the area. The month will start off with a variety of bonfire nights and firework displays so have a look at our 'What's on' section and take your pick from a fantastic range of events. Remembrance Sunday this year falls on 12th November, when the nation remembers and honours those who have sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. Paddy and Roger Grimshaw from Tredington are going to host a Remembrance Concert in their barn on Saturday 18th November to raise money for the Poppy Appeal and to remember their friend Harry Robertson who was one of the longest-standing members of the Tewkesbury Royal British Legion (see page 7 for more information). I know it's hard to believe but Christmas is just around the corner, so why not take a trip to one of the many fayres and festivals that are on and start your Christmas shopping early? The Christmas lights will be switched on on Sunday 19th November and the event will be, as always, accompanied by an excellent high street market. If you are a local business and would like to be included in our December and January issues, please contact us early as our print dates are earlier than usual for these issues with the Christmas and New Year holidays coming up. Also, if you would like to add any upcoming events to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk or like our Facebook page and we will be happy to share the event for you to promote it to the local community - again please contact us early to avoid disappointment! I hope you have a great month and see you back here in December! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Remembrance Concert in honour of Harry Robertson Paddy and Roger Grimshaw of Tredington are hosting a Remembrance Concert in their barn on Saturday 18th November to raise money for the Poppy Appeal. Sadly, Tewkesbury recently lost one of its leading citizens in Harry Robertson. Harry was not only a friend of the Grimshaw’s but was also one of the longest-standing members of the Tewkesbury Royal British Legion. Branch Chair Paul Walker recently presented Harry with a sixty-fiveyear bar to his poppy appeal medal. In memory of Harry, Paddy and Roger will dedicate their concert to Harry’s memory. The concert will be an evening of Poetry, Prose, Music and Song. Tickets are available from M&Co, Bookworm, The RBL Club in Tewkesbury, and Roger and Paddy Grimshaw: 01684 294053.

French Omelette with Garlic Tomatoes Serves 1
Ready in 15 minutes
Eggs are the perfect fridge standby for a quick and filling supper. Here’s how to make a classic creamy French omelette for one in a few simple steps – the recipe can easily be doubled to serve two people.
Toss the tomatoes and garlic with the olive oil. Place on a foil-lined grill pan and cook under a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until just tender.
Ingredients: • • • • • • • •
8 cherry tomatoes, halved 2 tsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 large eggs 1tbsp milk Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large knob of butter Spinach and rocket leaves, to serve
Meanwhile, lightly beat the eggs and milk in a jug and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Heat the butter in a small omelette or non-stick frying pan until it is just foaming. Pour in the beaten eggs and stir gently with a fork, drawing the mixture in from the sides to the centre as it sets and letting the liquid egg run out to the sides. When the omelette is just set, stop stirring and cook for a further 30 seconds to brown the underside (see tip). Place the grilled tomatoes on top of the omelette.
TIP
Take care not to overcook the omelette – keep the heat at medium and remove the pan from the heat when the top is still soft and creamy. Page 10
5
Slide the omelette onto a serving plate, tipping the pan to gently fold it over the tomatoes. Serve immediately with salad.

Home & Interiors Scandi Winter Trends
If you thought lagom was a kind of bean and gluggavedur a creamy Christmas tipple, don’t miss Katherine Sorrell’s guide to the Scandinavian interiors trends that will see you through the winter. Hygge The best known of our Scandi set, hygge was massive last winter and it looks like it’s here to stay. Pronounced ‘hoog-uh’, the Danish word is not directly translatable into English, but the overall concept stands for cosiness and contentment, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, and enjoying good times with friends and family. When you recognise that special moment – it’s the feeling of hygge. It’s well known that the Danes are the happiest people on the planet, and maybe it’s all because of hygge, which is an integral part of the nation’s culture and psyche. The high season for hygge is winter – it helps make long, dark evenings more bearable – and, especially, Christmas. Key elements? Home-cooked comfort food; Page 14
By Katherine Sorrell
eating with family or friends; candles or pools of warm, well-positioned light; reading in front of the fire on a rainy day; squashy sofas and armchairs; a warm drink; sheepskins, knitting; hot water bottles; piles of throws and cushions; board games; a log burner. Overall, it’s not about spending money, but trying to be kind to yourself; hygge is when there’s nothing to worry or annoy you, and you take great pleasure from simple things. Lagom The lagom trend hails from Sweden, and it roughly translates as ‘not too little, not too much’ – i.e. just the right amount. It’s applied to everything, from drinking coffee to buying a house, and its aim is fairness and contentment. Apparently, while hygge is a momentary state of happiness, lagom is more to do with an overall approach to life. And this sense of moderation and balance extends naturally to home design – functional, unfussy, minimal and wellmade pieces are key, with an emphasis on durability and sustainability. Naturally, Ikea has created a LIVE Lagom project, in which the Swedish flatpack superstore ‘supports customers and co-workers
with products, workshops, bespoke advice and an active community to help save energy and water, reduce waste and promote a healthy lifestyle.’ How else can you incorporate a sense of lagom in your home? Keep things simple, declutter, tidy, reduce your carbon footprint (LED light bulbs, for a start) and choose furniture and accessories that are pared-back, practical and stylish without being showy. Use neutral colours and natural materials. gLuggavedur The latest Scandi trend is gluggavedur, from Iceland. It means, literally, ‘windowweather’, or an overall concept of curling up indoors while watching the world go by outside, specifically when the weather looks nice from indoors but is probably not so great when you’re actually out in it. Make the most of your living room or bedroom and looking out on a cold, sunny day by enhancing your window area – beautiful curtains or blinds, perhaps with a pretty tie back or a tactile blind pull; maybe some wooden shutters, a window seat with a cushion and a throw, and even some plants, candles or carefully selected art works nearby. main image: oslo grey and lime cushions, £50 each, and throws, £125 each, all aLSo Home: 01483 608 614; www.alsohome.com

Cracking down on illegal waste carriers
TEM Plumbing QUALIFIED, RELIABLE AND FULLY INSURED PLUMBER Tewkesbury Borough Council is working with Gloucestershire Police and the Environment Agency to tackle illegal waste activities in the borough. On 18th October, a joint waste carrier stop and search exercise was undertaken at a location on the A38 south of Tewkesbury. A total of 92 vehicles were stopped and asked to provide details of their waste carriers licence. The exercise proved to be very successful and a number of businesses will now be subject to follow up actions and further enquiries. The council is committed to tackling waste crime and will continue to work with the police and the Environment Agency to address this matter. Part of that commitment involves informing businesses that they have a legal duty of care regarding the waste that they produce. If a business transports waste, it must be registered with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier. Details of how to register can be found at the following link: www.gov.uk/waste-carrier-or-broker-registration.

Equally, if a business transfers any of its waste then it must ensure that the person/business it has transferred the waste to is authorised to receive it and a waste transfer note is completed. Further advice on how to comply with waste duty of care can be found here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/waste-duty-ofcare-code-of-practice. Cllr Jim Mason, Leader for Clean and Green Environment said of the exercise, “Working alongside our partners in the police and the Environment Agency, we are sending a clear message to those who would flaunt the law and dispose of their waste inappropriately. We are taking a tough stance and it is good to see pro-active activities such as this one happening within our community.” During the day, officers from the council also undertook safety checks on a number of taxi vehicles. The council takes unlicensed taxi operations very seriously and will continue to collaborate with Gloucestershire Police to ensure that unlicensed taxi drivers are identified and subject to appropriate enforcement action.

Hospice unveils Christmas beneficiary ball The only hospice in Gloucestershire giving inpatient care has announced details of its prestigious Christmas celebration raising funds for its specialist services. For the first time, the event will be held at the stunning Princess Hall at Cheltenham Ladies College, giving the exclusive opportunity for guests to celebrate with family, friends, staff or entertain partners and clients. Taking place on Friday 15th December the evening offers a traditional Christmas celebration packed with live entertainment and seasonal surprises, including a champagne diamond raffle in association with RJ Spicer Goldsmith. Hosting the evening, which is sponsored by Pulhams Coaches, is Craig Wright and auctioneer Philip Allwood, the star of Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Dickinson’s Real Deal will be overseeing the evening’s charity auction, sending some highly exclusive lots under the hammer to help raise funds for the hospice. The evening will start at 7.00pm with a sparkling drinks reception
and includes a gourmet traditional Christmas three-course dinner with wine and live music performances from The Chip Shop Boys. Matt Reay, Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court’s event fundraiser, said: “This is the perfect seasonal celebration to bring friends, colleagues and clients together in the beautiful and historic surroundings of Princess Hall, Cheltenham Ladies College.” “By booking a table of ten, you could be paying for three hospice nurses for a day and a bed for a day of inpatient care at our hospice. Over the past two years, our sold-out Winter Ball has raised £50,000, helping us to continue providing our vital hospice services supporting hundreds of local people and families.” Kathryn Pulham, Director at Pulhams Coaches which is the event’s main sponsor, said: “We are delighted and proud to sponsor such a prestigious event and support such a worthwhile cause. It is a brilliant evening and we’re looking forward to helping raise much-needed funds for the amazing care given at the hospice, which we have had personal experience of.”
Stuart Walby from The Chip Shop Boys said, “We’ve supported the hospice for a number of years at this winter celebration and it is always a fantastic night. As a Gloucestershirebased band, we’re delighted to be providing the musical entertainment to help raise funds for such an important local cause.” A table of ten costs £850, with individual tickets available at £90 each. To reserve a place email leckhampton.events@sueryder.org or call Matt in the fundraising team on 01242 246 162. The ball is one of a number of events taking place throughout the year to help raise funds for the hospice, which needs to raise £2 million a year so it can continue providing its round-theclock specialist hospice and end of life care across its inpatient unit, day services and hospice at home team. I have heard tell that the way Mercedes names its products is a German state secret, known only to a chosen few and passed down to a successor in a ceremony conducted, behind closed doors, in a castle somewhere in Bavaria. But now, having met my shadowy contact in a deserted underground car park, I think I understand just what those letters, stuck on the rear of their vehicles, mean. Take the two-seater SLK. Those letters stand for “Sportlich, Leicht, Kurz”. In English that’s “Sporty, Light, Short”. Seems pretty straightforward to me. So is the S Class a sporty car then? No - the S Class is a “Sonderklasse”, or special model. K for Kurz (Short) is also used on their “Kompakt” models (some of which aren’t
01684 295589 OPEN EVERY DAY
short) and models that have turbo-charged engines, as that’s what a “Kompressor” is in Deutsch. I’ll try another letter. E should be easy (no pun). E is for Executive. You see lots of big Mercedes E Class cars. However, E also stands for “Einspritzing”. Not an iced fizzy wine drink, but fuel injection. How about the letter G? In the 1970s, both dictators and film stars the world over were chauffeured around in the 600 Grosser Mercedes limousine. So G must mean “big, grosser limo”? Right! But only if you are planning to drive your celeb off-road: G, also stands for “Geländewagen”, which is an all-terrain vehicle. We come now to a truck Mercedes make called the UniMog…no, I’m not going to go there. I’m already confused. Still none the wiser, perhaps I’d better try sneaking into that ceremony in the Bavarian castle… By Iain Betson

A Busy November by Pippa Greenwood
Despite the seasonal slowdown there are lots of jobs which, if done now, could end up saving you time and money later on - so here are the top November gardening tasks to get to grips with. Hoe off weeds that are around now, as some might still set seed during mild, damp periods. Provided they have no seed pods their top-growth can safely be composted, but bin, burn or rot down fleshy weed roots to prevent them growing in the compost heap! Cut back or pick off obviously diseased leaves and stems to neaten flower beds and borders, and remove some of the foliage that is dying back purely due to the time of year. Leave some deteriorating but healthy foliage in place to provide protection for the crowns of more fragile plants. Rabbits become more of a menace as natural food supplies reduce, so make sure that rabbit netting is not damaged and that trees, especially those that have been planted recently, are fitted with tree guards. If there is a sizeable tree near your lawn, rake up fallen leaves on a regular basis to prevent damage to the grass beneath. Page 24
Trees, shrubs and climbers that have been planted recently may need protection from frost and cold winds over their first winter. Use a layer or two of horticultural fleece draped over the plant and pegged in place; it can be removed on warmer days. Fleece ‘jackets’ with a drawstring and in various sizes are available from my website, see www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops. If you’re planning on hedgeplanting, remember that many hedging plants are cheaper if bought ‘bare root field grown’, meaning lifted from their nursery field without being potted on. Order now to make sure you get the pick of the bunch. Bare root plants are not feasible once the leaves start to appear next year. Use seed catalogues and websites to help decide what you want to grow next year. Many suppliers offer seeds and young plants of many vegetables, so order now and you can relax, knowing that you have got your first choice selection. Check out my website, www.pippagreenwood. com/grow-your-own, for a Grow Your Own package perfect for the less experienced vegetable grower - the plants you choose come with weekly advice
emails telling you exactly what you need to be doing. Established clumps of bamboo should be thinned out now. The extra space that the remaining canes will have will allow them to grow away better, and also gives them more freedom to move about in that way which makes bamboos so very appealing. Less tender bulbs such as nerines and many of the agapanthus will winter better if you give them a little protection now. Mound dry chipped bark or other mulch over the area in which they are planted. And last but not least, before water butts fill up with autumn rain grab a sturdy brush and clean each one out thoroughly, removing deposits of algae, soggy bits of plant and general gunge! Rinse out and then re-install ready to collect some rain. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for a gorgeous selection of useful gardening items, perfect for gifts too, including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, fleece jackets, cloches, fruit cages, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.
