Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Well, where did this year go? I can’t believe it's December already and it’s that time of year again when we embrace Christmas and all the festive fun that goes with it. Whether you go for a stroll on the Christmas market, take the children to meet Santa or enjoy a seasonal concert, there are plenty of fantastic events happening in and around the area for you to enjoy in the lead-up to Christmas. Make sure to have a look at our 'What's On' section towards the back of the magazine for more information. Christmas time is also pantomime time. This year’s production at The Everyman Theatre is 'Dick Whittington and his Cat' while The Roses Theatre in Tewkesbury is staging 'Sleeping Beauty'. I can't wait to take the kids! December is a particularly busy time for our local shops, pubs, restaurants and garden centres, many of which are open throughout the season, so please support our local businesses as much as you can this Christmas and give back to the community. Finally, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Glos Directories! See you next year. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl until pale and fluffy, then beat in the egg and orange zest. Stir in the chocolate chips and walnut pieces. 2. Sift over the baking powder and flour and stir well until combined. Turn the mixture out onto a lightly floured surface and knead to a soft dough, adding a little more flour if necessary. 3. Divide the dough into two pieces and shape each to an oval shape roughly 20cm x 10 cm. Place on a large baking sheet and flatten slightly. Bake for 20-25 minutes until firm and light golden. Cool for 5 minutes. 4. Transfer the two pieces of semi-baked dough to a chopping board and, using a sharp knife, cut each piece into 10 slices. 5. Return the slices, cut-side down, to the baking sheet and bake for a further 8-12 minutes until crisp and golden. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

Winter Driving Tips
Iain Betson passes on some winter driving tips Stop! When snow is falling fast, don’t drive unless you really have to. In terrible weather, putting things off until conditions improve is best. Winter ailments can leave you exhausted and sluggish. If you don’t feel like you can drive safely, don’t risk it. Car maintenance Keeping the car well maintained is doubly important in winter. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. In the wet Take simple precautions when driving in heavy rain. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the
heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Drive cautiously and leave a good distance between you and the vehicle in front. In snow and ice Again, slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, though if your tyres are making less noise than usual you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Press the clutch in just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

Home & Interiors Christmas Elegance
By Katherine Sorrell
It’s all too easy to go overboard at Christmas. This year, why not decorate your home with subtle glamour, creating a sophisticated seasonal backdrop to festive times with friends and family. this living room is welcoming and cosy, but also cool, calm and collected, thanks to a subtle colour scheme of greys and whites, together with touches of texture in the form of wicker, wool and wood. traditional nordmann fir, from £29.99; led warm white string lights, from £9.99; wool throw, £59.99; firwood star decoration (set of three), £44.99; Magical Hare cushion, £39.99; tree decorations, from £1.49; all dobbies.
Beautiful baubles will add class to your christmas tree. Walther & co bronze acorn and leaf decoration, £9.99, cotswold trading.
a simple white backdrop with natural, twining leaves is perfect for offsetting the glow of candles. large silver-dipped candle holder, £29.99; led glitter twig wreath, £39.99; medium silverdipped candle holder, £9.99; reindeer bell ornament, £4.99; decorated glass bauble, £3.99; garland (price and details on application); all dobbies.

a glimmer of metal is all the rage, and these minimal, slightly rusted zinc garlands satisfy the trend without adding any bling. Use along the mantelpiece, twined along the christmas table or hung on the wall. £29.95, decorator’s notebook.
Ideas for elegant festIve décor
• Too many colours together tend to look garish. Choose one main colour theme for each room and stick to it. This season, dark backdrops are very on trend, with accents of gold or brass, while white, beige or grey are classics that always look great, with dashes of red or green for that seasonal feel. • With limited colours, textures come into their own. Think linen, wool, fur (faux if you prefer), wicker and – this year’s must-haves – concrete and velvet. • For this look, avoid twee animals, anything knitted or made from felt, and all-out glitter (a little sparkle goes a long way). • Christmas ornaments tend to be collected over the years, and so can look rather haphazard if all displayed in one go. Carefully choose a selection that co-ordinates and – stay strong – put the rest back in the loft for next year. Page 14

A Very Geeky Christmas
Thanks for bearing with me this year, you must all be rather bored of tech talk by now! I’d like to close 2017 with some words on how you can use gadgets and gizmos to get through the Christmas season. Not just for entertainment but to really bring friends and family together.
where you can help Santa collect toys in the skies above your hometown. Check it out at santadive. withgoogle.com. Also worth a look is reindeercam.com where Santa feeds his furry friends on a live broadcast. If you’ve had enough of the big jolly fellow, visit www.stillenacht.info on Christmas Eve. This is a live broadcast from Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria, where the Silent Night song was originally composed.
Let’s start with video chat. Most of you will have heard of Skype and FaceTime but for those who haven’t, these are really simple ways of chatting with someone, for free, using both voice and video. Skype is owned by Microsoft and FaceTime by Apple. They are really easy to use, just remember that the other person needs to have the same software. If you both own an iPhone, use FaceTime, if not (for example one person has a Windows laptop, the other an iPad), Skype is easiest. Just search for them on Google and it will show you how.
Personally, I hate the huge focus on gifts at Christmas. I think it spoils the real charm of it all and puts too much pressure on people. Of course, I always spoil the younger ones in our family but for us grown-ups, how about investing in something we can all share instead? My pick would be a Netflix subscription. There’s a Premium Plan at £9.99/month which lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on four devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (UHD) when available. Not a fan of movies? Try Tidal for the ultimate music experience. A £29.99 subscription gets you as many tracks as you want in lossless High Fidelity sound quality for any five people. They sound way better than MP3s and there are loads of seasonal playlists.
Now, on to the stuff you might not have heard about! I love to kick off Christmas by tracking Santa with the nieces and nephews. Open up any browser and type in santatracker. google.com. On the big night, you’ll see his journey displayed in real-time across the globe. This year, Google is also doing a special online game
The other brilliant thing about Christmas is food! If we’ve met, you’ll know I like my grub! The site I turn to most of the time when I want to try something new is www.bbc.co.uk/food/ recipes. However, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous try the BigOven app for iPhone or Android. It’s got 350,000 recipes and will even generate your
Page 18
shopping list for you and show you what your friends are cooking. And of course, when you’re done, share those scrummy dinners, cakes and cocktails on Facebook using an app called Foodie which makes even the crummiest snaps look tasty. Now that I’ve gotten you into the festive mood, how about we refocus completely? Christmas is surely a time when we look around us and see how much we already have. How much we take for granted. Here in Winchcombe, we have a community around us and a working link to the rest of the world. Join me in the run-up to Christmas by visiting uk.gofundme.com where thousands of local, national and international causes need your support for the less fortunate. Pick something close to your heart and get your wallet out. It will mean more to someone out there than a posh Christmas card and you’ll get updates throughout next year on how your money was spent. If you are in need of help yourself, join up too, you’ll find people out there to support you in whatever way you need. The web is good like that. That’s it from me for 2017. I’ve had a blast playing with all these toys on the pretence that I needed to write these articles! All that’s left to say is that I wish you all a brilliant, buzzy, whizzy, geeky New Year! - Alex Sass, Managing Director of PostMood.com and CEO of Hyperworld Control Ltd. Blog: www.FluffyGeek.com

Christmas is well and truly just around the corner and whilst your thoughts may be on gifts, meals, crackers and cards, don’t forget the tree. And I mean a REAL Christmas tree, complete with needles and, if you choose the really traditional route, that wonderful aroma. For those concerned about the impact on the planet, Britishgrown trees are most definitely not an ecological disaster zone - think of them as a crop plant rather like a field of cabbages, except that typically Christmas trees will use less fertiliser and fewer chemicals than many classic crop plants. To make sure you get what suits you best, there are a few things to think about before buying your tree. The Norway spruce (Picea abies) is the traditional tree, with gorgeous, short dark green pointed needles and that unmistakable Christmassy aroma, but it is the most likely to drop its needles. However, if well treated it won’t perform badly and it is the lowest-priced of the real trees. The Serbian Spruce (Picea omorica) is quite similar to the Norway spruce and is the favourite festive tree in central Europe, with a distinct blueish tint to the underside of the Page 22
needles. Typically slender, it is a good choice for smaller sitting rooms and has decent needle retention - but no smell. The Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana) is now the biggest-selling Christmas tree in the UK. Its shiny green broad needles are quite soft and almost impossible to shift, so it’s ideal for those who hate mess! The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) is less widely available, but its combination of good looks and needle-holding ability makes it worth considering. It has a narrower base than the Norway spruce so is also useful in smaller houses. So, how do you choose the best tree of the type you’ve decided on and keep it looking good? • Don’t buy a real tree too early. • Opt for a tree produced by a member of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association - look for the BCTGA logo. • Choose a tree with a good, full shape, not lopsided and with minimal gaps. Check the needles - they should be glossy (for those varieties where this is a characteristic) and the correct colour. They must be free from pests and diseases - avoid anything
yellowed or inclined to shed, or with white fluffy bits. Never buy an already netted tree since you can’t see what you’re getting! • If you buy one quite early then the most important thing is to keep it outside - recut the end of the trunk and put the tree in a bucket of water in a sheltered spot outside. Remove any net as it is important to get air circulating around the needles. • When you bring a tree inside, avoid putting it anywhere too warm or close to a heat source, and make sure that you use a stand with a water reservoir that is kept topped up. When Christmas is over, make sure you recycle your tree - many councils and garden centres now offer this service. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for great gardening gifts: a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card (a perfect Christmas present, where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready vegetable plants in the spring and every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice), gardening tools, raised bed kits, GrowerFrames, signed books and more!

Christmas countdown is on in Winchcombe With Winchcombe’s Christmas Festival just days away, final festive preparations are underway in the Cotswold town as it gets ready to welcome thousands of visitors on Tuesday 5th December. The late-night Christmas shopping evening between 5.00pm and 8.00pm will see the charming ancient town’s independent shops, galleries, restaurants and pubs throwing open their doors in a warm festive welcome. Thanks to the support of Winchcombe Rotary Club a staggering 70 real lit Christmas trees will throw a spotlight on the town’s centuries old architecture creating a real festive spectacle. A special Christmas outdoor market of 40 stalls will line North Street and Abbey Terrace offering a seasonal selection of fine food and drink, crafts and gifts too. The popular Five Valleys Circus will be on hand (and stilts) to entertain big and little kids alike with juggling, giant bubble blowing and stilt walking. There will also be performances from local primary schools, the Winchcombe Community Choir, Happenstance Border Morris Dancers, a Tango Dancing demonstration, Winchcombe Handbell Ringers, Winchcombe Concert Brass, live music from the Occasional Big Band, and carols from Winchcombe’s local

church choirs too – sure to get everyone into the festive spirt. Children will have the chance to meet Father Christmas too in a special grotto in the town’s Guide Hall with proceeds supporting local charities. BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s Mark Cummings will be Town Cryer for the evening to keep everyone informed of all performances and times (or see www.facebook.com/ WinchcombeChristmasFestival for more details). The local community radio station Radio Winchcombe will also be broadcasting live throughout the evening's festivities. It’s a real community Christmas celebration and the town will be collecting donations for a local charity too. This year Winchcombe’s First Responders will be offering First Aid demonstrations, raising funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance. Last year over 2,000 people attended the community celebrations to mark the Christmas season and support local businesses and traders. It is hoped this year the event, which is supported by Winchcombe Together Association, Winchcombe Town Council Leisure and Tourism Committee and Tewkesbury
Borough Council, will draw just as many people to the town. Winchcombe resident Michael Hartley said: “It’s great to see the town’s shops, businesses and groups coming together to put on such a great Christmas celebration in the town. Winchcombe’s a great place to live and the evening is always well attended and packed full of festive fun for all the family. My wife likes the Christmas shopping. I like the festive drinks!” Jim Davies, Chair of Leisure and Tourism at Winchcombe Town Council, said: “It’s a wonderful Winchcombe welcome to the festive season. A fabulous, fun-filled evening for all the family; Santa taking Christmas wishes, shops full of glitter, stalls with perfect gifts, wassailing, hot toddies and wonderful food not to be missed!” Katie Power, Economic Development Officer at Tewkesbury Borough Council, said: “We’re really pleased to support this fabulous, festive event in Winchcombe. Christmas events deliver an important economic boost for towns, and we’d encourage people to visit Winchcombe and support the fantastic range of businesses it has to offer. It’s also the perfect opportunity to kick-start the Christmas shopping and pick up those special gifts, treats, and stocking fillers.” For more information on the Winchcombe Christmas Festival, visit www.winchcombe. co.uk or www.facebook.com/ WinchcombeChristmasFestival
all of the above and check out the range of Christmas gifts at WR Home before Winchcombe Reclamation closes for the holidays on the 22nd of December! Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas! From Zaza & all at WR Winchcombe Reclamation Ltd Broadway Road Winchcombe Gloucestershire GL54 5NT

Festive Free Parking Tewkesbury Borough Council is joining forces with local businesses to encourage residents to shop locally this Christmas. To support local Christmas events and small businesses in the borough the council will provide free parking on selected dates over the festive season. This month, the borough council will be supporting Small Business Saturday - a national initiative to encourage consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. Page 26
In order to encourage residents and visitors to support local traders and businesses when stocking up on Christmas goodies, free parking will be offered in Tewkesbury and Winchcombe in borough council-run car parks on Saturday, 2 December. Winchcombe shoppers can also take advantage of free parking (in borough council-run car parks) on the last Saturday before Christmas, 23 December - to help local businesses with trade and shoppers with their last-minute search for the perfect gifts. Councillor Rob Bird, Lead Member
for Economic Development and Promotion said of the free parking initiative "Free parking is an added incentive to visit the unique array of shops, cafes and markets of the wonderful towns of Tewkesbury and Winchcombe, on these special occasions. The festive season is a great time to explore these distinctive places and the alternatives they offer." Here is one of our 5-star reviews. For more, please visit www.yell.com and search for MRE Contracts. Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
