Tips from The Millionaire Maker The media have called Richard Denny the millionaire maker. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world and he lives right here in the Cotswolds.

A Vintage Year “A person going nowhere normally gets there” is a well-known and irritating saying but sadly true. January is the month when many of us think about the year ahead and what we hopefully will do in the year. These thoughts are usually driven by what will make us and our loved ones happy. So we often start with New Year’s resolutions of losing some weight, getting a little fitter or giving up some bad habit. Unfortunately these well intentioned resolutions (not really goals) gradually get superseded by the pressures of life, a lack of determination or realisation of the sheer joy and pleasure resulting from their achievement. Just such a small price of effort can and will reap years of fulfilment and joy. January is also the month for thoughts about real achievement goal setting. Apparently this is the month when most people chose their holidays and talk and think about other things they want to do, own, or achieve in the year ahead.

Let me remind you of one of the essential ingredients for happiness that is to have something to look forward to. So what do you want to do this year? Your most wonderful asset, your brain, needs help to give it direction and purpose, so help it by giving it some goals. You will be amazed by what it will do, especially when bolstered with a prayer or two and some plans. So here are a few tips to make 2016 a vintage year: 1. Make a goal list of all the things you want to do and achieve this year. 2. If you have a partner in your life, share and discus with them. You both can have some separate goals but there must be some you can share or want together. 3. Set down some deadlines. Your brain needs some time deadlines to perform well. 4. Plan each goal as you would if you were going on holiday. 5. Now get going! There are some people who MAKE things happen. There are some people who WATCH things happen. There are some people who WONDER what happened. For more detailed information and help join the Denny Business Academy for free.

ZEBRA FACT: Did you know that zebras can run at the same speeds as a racehorse?! Just a little something I learnt whilst at the New Year’s Day meeting at Cheltenham! In fact, this has inspired me to consider a career as a Racehorse, and having taken advice from local jockey Paddy Brennan, I shall begin my training soon – keep an eye out for a late entry for the Gold Cup...!

Happy New Year!

As we entered a New Year, I have been looking back at 2015 and thought that I would share some of my favourite photographs with you. These show my transformation from a simple sketch into the beautiful beast that I am today... - Zaza Zebra

What is Hypnodontics? Fear of the dentist’s chair? Fiona Vitel, a fully trained and certified clinical hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner, began her practice a decade ago in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Her highly successful hypnotherapy business flourished more by word-ofmouth than advertising and her name and presence was known through various media interviews on radio and various editorials in newspapers and magazines throughout the region. Fiona trained in the USA and London. A first generation Australian, born to British parents, she decided to return to England, after nine years in the United Arab Emirates, and has established her office in the central Cotswold town of Winchcombe. A decade of experience and with thousands of sessions under her belt, Fiona leads as an established professional.

Hypnodontics is the art and science of using hypnosis to induce comfortable and pain free dental visits. Many people are scared of visiting the dentist. I can help deal with whatever issue you might have such as discomfort, anxiety, panic, fear or phobia. l Hard to manage patients often put off going to the dentist until the pain or dental problem can no longer be ignored l Hypnosis is used to reduce stress and induce hypnoanethesia so that less medication is used l Control can be achieved in many cases by direct suggestion or properly developed imagery, but sometimes more complex methods are required l Fears and phobias include fear of needles, fear of pain, the sound of the drill, sights, sounds and smells of a dental surgery, fear that anaesthesia won’t work, lack of control, and choking or gagging Contact me today to arrange an introductory telephone consultation or to make an appointment at the practice.

Even your children can benefit The great news is that you don’t have to suffer or dread going to the dentist anymore. Your children can also benefit from Hypnodontics so they don’t live with the inherited fear of the dentist. Hypnosis can assist in: l Elimination or reduction of tension, anxiety or fear of pain and related discomfort l Accustoming the patient to orthodontic or prosthetic appliances l Reduction of anaesthesia or analgesia during dental procedures and the elimination of the side effects they cause l Control of salivary flow and bleeding l Prevention of gagging and nausea Email now for your FREE half hour consultation or phone Fiona Vitel on 07599555892 or have a look at the website www.fionavitelhypnotherapy.com

to Toddington circular WinchcombeWinchcombe to Toddington (Circular)

Walk Number 7

A walk on rising and falling paths above the attractive Isbourne valley to Toddington; returning near the restored steam railway then via the Winchcombe Way. Opportunity to use public transport back from Toddington. Distance : 9½ miles Duration : 4 hours Difficulty : fairly level, with minor rises and falls; a few kissing gates and stiles Start/finish : Abbey Terrace, Winchcombe; grid ref. 025282 OS maps : Outdoor Leisure 45 Landranger 150 Refreshments : Winchcombe (cafés, pubs) Greet (station café, pub), Toddington (station café, pub) Ascent

: 527 ft (minor gradients)

Walk towards the shops and turn right into Castle Street, a steep hill leading down to the River Isbourne. Cross the river and take the signposted Gloucestershire Way on the left. At the kissing gate, go straight ahead beside the river for about ½ mile, emerging on the Broadway Road. Turn left across the road bridge then, very soon, cross the road into Riverside, turning right into a cul de sac shortly afterwards. Walk towards a large cedar tree then follow the path as it slopes to the right down to, then alongside, the river. Page 14

The path bends to the left and ends at a group of houses. Keep in the same direction through Greenways to meet Greet Road near a red telephone kiosk. Turn right and walk along Greet Road for about ½ mile past the medical centre, the senior school and Winchcombe station to a crossroads. Carry on in the same direction into Market Lane and follow it through Greet. Ignore turnings to the left and right. After the turning to Grove View, the road becomes a track. Follow this track as it rises gently towards some farm buildings. There are good views across the Isbourne Valley to the Cotswold escarpment, and you will see Toddington Church and Manor (wrapped in plastic) ahead. Keep going in the same direction along the track, ignoring a footpath junction near another set of buildings. About 200 yards further on, cross the stile on the right. Go straight down the bank to a welldefined farm track. Turn left downhill towards Toddington.

Look out for a foot-path sign pointing right at a T-junction of tracks. Turn right here and follow the path along the drive, then pass through the kissing gate on the left just before the house. Follow the line of the fence for a short distance then bear right towards the footbridge over the Isbourne. Cross the bridge and take the obvious path about 30o left across the field towards the rightmost gate of a pair. Pass through this, then turn immediately left through a kissing gate. Follow the well-worn path across the field towards a white roadside direction post on the B4077 road. Cross the B4077 road with care and walk up Church Lane for about ¼ mile to a Y junction. Take the left fork to visit St Andrew's Church. Our walk takes the right fork. Look for the path which ascends the bank on the right almost immediately. Take this path into a field then carry on in the same direction towards a barn to meet a concrete track (which can be very muddy in winter!).

To advertise call 07740 784 444 or 01242 500 028 or visit www.winchcombemagazine.co.uk

Turn left along this track, passing a house on your left. Carry on in the same direction, through three gates, then climb a stile at the BroadwayWinchcombe road (B4632). Turn right along the verge towards the roundabout at New Town. You may return to Winchcombe by bus [see note at the end] from the nearby Pheasant Inn, or from the stop on the road to Tewkesbury. To continue the walk, turn left at the roundabout towards Stow. Walk along the right hand side of that road (B4077), passing the garden centre and the station entrance. Cross the railway bridge, pass the houses on your right, then turn right at a footpath sign into a field. Bear slightly right and walk along by the railway through several fields for about ½ mile until you reach one of the lanes passing through Didbrook. Turn left along this lane for about ¼ mile to the triangle of lanes in the centre of the village.

Walk along the track, following it where it bends right to meet a road. Turn left along the road, and left again at a road junction to arrive in Hailes.

There's a lot of historical interest around the Church and the Abbey. Go past Hailes Church, and turn right just before the Abbey (signed Winccombe Way / Cotswold Way). Cross the field and emerge on a road (Salter's Lane).

There's a choice of routes here. The direct one goes up the field opposite to arrive by the side of a line of trees (point A). If that looks too muddy, turn right on Salter's Lane, shortly afterwards turning sharp left along a track (signed Cotswold Way) which rises to point A. From here, take the Cotswold Way back to Winchcombe. To reach the start point of this walk from the junction of Puckpit Lane and Broadway Road, simply walk over Isbourne road bridge and up Hailes Street. Alternatively, you may retrace your outward route beside the river; look out for kingfishers – you may be lucky! [The bus service is currently provided by Castleways Coaches, see www.castleways.co.uk]

You may divert here to St George's Church, a short distance to your left. The walk continues by turning right at the triangle. At the right hand bend a short distance ahead, go through a gate and follow the direction of a footpath sign towards the right hand corner of the field. Turn right at the junction of paths here onto the Winchcombe Way.

Points of interest Winchcombe and Toddington stations are part of the volunteer-run Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. Following the closure of the British Rail line in 1976, enthusiasts bought the trackbed, relaid the rails, and repaired rolling stock, locomotives and buildings. Regular steam- and diesel-hauled trains run on the line. See www.gwsr.com for more. St Andrew's Church, Toddington, the third church on this site, was commissioned in the late 19th century by the third Lord Sudeley. The first Lord Sudeley and Lady Sudeley are sculpted inside the building on a Gothic altar tomb. Toddington Manor, owned by Damien Hurst, is nearby: its plastic wrapping has been in place since 2006. St George's Church, Didbrook, was rebuilt in the late 15th century for the then Abbot of Hailes. It has a Perpendicular tower, while its interior was opened up in a restoration in the early 20th century. It has attractive stained glass. Didbrook village has many medieval cruck cottages and Elizabethan buildings. Hailes Church was built in the period 1139–51. Early English windows were added in the 13th century, along with the wall paintings. There is a medieval bestiary and some fine heraldic arms. The Abbey itself was founded in 1246 by Earl Cornwall in thanks for being saved from a shipwreck. It had a famous relic – a phial of, allegedly, Christ's blood. This attracted large numbers of pilgrims before the monastery was destroyed in 1539. Copyright © 2011 P R Teague, Winchcombe Walkers are Welcome

Make Room for Roses by Pippa Greenwood

It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. Although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or roseclad arbour? Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit. Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have Page 16

somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility. If the roots of bare root roses are lopsided and crammed together, spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately. Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place,

keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring. Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! New Presenter – Chris Martin Cheerio to Dominic Morrison Dominic finished his Friday evening (7-9pm) programme at the end of November after approximately 9 months with the station as he is moving away from the area. We thank him for his excellent programme and wish him well for the future.

New Presenter – James Locke Stepping into Dominic’s shoes is James Locke...

Chris has spent most of his life working in the entertainment industry, spending 33 years in the projection box at the old Odeon Cinema in Winchcombe Street, Cheltenham. When it closed he took early retirement, but spent the next few years producing commercial videos in association with The Tewkesbury Video Club. In a chance encounter a friend of a friend asked him if he could produce her radio show, and this led to Chris producing a number of shows for different people. Bitten by the ‘Radio Bug’ he now has his own show here on Radio Winchcombe.

James is 19 years of age and loves life, including a range of music from Whitney Houston, Dire Straits and modern Cee Lo Green and Jess Glynne (who he had the pleasure of meeting). He works part time for his father in the property maintenance business, and also at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Chris presents his programme at 11pm on Sundays, and it is repeated at 11am on Tuesdays. Each week there is a different theme for the music in the show ranging from a certain word in the title to whatever he can dream up, taking you on a Magical Musical Mystery Tour to remember ‘the good old times’ and thoughts of ‘what tomorrow may bring’.

He went to Cleeve School in Bishop's Cleeve where he was encouraged to use the sound equipment by fellow Radio Winchcombe presenter Bryn Thomas. His show on Radio Winchcombe will be aired on Friday 7-9pm and consists of music from all decades hence being called “Driving Down The Decades”. It will also include live interviews, competitions, dedications, birthday announcements and song requests. He can be followed Page 18

Listeners’ Panel We are in the process of putting together a new Listeners Panel made up of people from different walks of life who listen to Radio Winchcombe and who can provide feedback on programming and other aspects of the station, and provide guidance as to what they would like to hear and see. The Panel will meet just once every 3 months or so, and therefore being a member won’t be onerous! The feedback and direction is very important to the station as we are keen to ensure that we provide what the community wants and needs. So if you would be interested in participating and would like to find out more please get in touch via the details below.

Get In Touch As ever, if you want to discuss any of the items above please contact me at: office1@radiowinchcombe.co.uk or 07768 777262.

Charity lottery win couple donate to local hospice

A big hearted couple from Bishop's Cleeve are celebrating winning £1,000 on the new Sue Ryder UK lottery, and despite needing the money to carry out necessary bathroom alterations, they have donated £100 back to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. The £1,000 win couldn’t have come at a better time for Sophie Brook and her husband Jonathan, who experienced complications following a hip replacement he had earlier this year. The Sue Ryder Lottery win means the family are able to install a bath into their shower room to help with Jonathan’s pain relief – something they have wanted to do for some time. Sophie said, “This unexpected win has cheered us all up and made us smile. We have been wanting to put a bath into our shower room to help with Jonathan’s pain relief for some time after he experienced complications following surgery earlier this year. This win could now make this possible. Thank you so much to Sue Ryder. I was stunned to hear that we’d won £1,000.” Despite needing the money to make adaptations to their home the big hearted couple have incredibly decided to donate £100 of their win to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Sophie continued, “Sue Ryder is an amazing charity and very dear to my heart,

so I wanted to donate £100 of the win back to the local hospice.” “I want to thank Sue Ryder for this much needed lottery win and also say a huge thank you to all the amazing staff at the hospice who do such an fantastic job.” Elise Hoadley, Director of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We are delighted one of the very first winners of the recently re-launched national Sue Ryder Lottery is from Gloucestershire, and what very deserving and kindhearted winners they are!” “Donating £100 of their winnings back to us is an incredibly touching gesture, and one which will help us to provide more care for local families at a time they need it most.” “Everyone at Leckhampton Court wishes Sophie, Jonathan and their family all the very best.” Sue Ryder Lottery players are asked to sign-up for £1 a week, with winners randomly drawn every Friday with 1st Prize - £1,000, 2nd Prize £100, 3rd Prize - £50, plus 30 £5 winners.

There is also a roll over prize of up to £10,000. Starting at £200, this prize can be won at any time and is designed to grow each week to a maximum of £10,000.

Lamb & Spinach Curry Serves 4

Ready in 55 minutes This mildly spiced curry thickened with red lentils and spinach will make a refreshing change for a family meal after all the traditional food over the festive season. Serve with a cooling cucumber and mint yoghurt and some warmed naan bread for a really filling mid-week supper.

Ingredients: • 2 tbsp oil • 600g lean lamb steaks, cut into chunks • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 6 tbsp balti curry paste • 75g red split lentils • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 200g baby spinach leaves • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander • Boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges to serve

TIP For a spicier flavour replace the balti curry paste with one that has a little more heat such as Madras. Adding some finely chopped red chilli when frying the onion will also boost the heat factor! Page 20

Heat half the oil in a large heavy-based pan over a medium-high heat. Add half the lamb pieces and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally until browned and sealed all over. Remove the lamb with a slotted spoon and set aside. Add the rest of the oil and fry the rest of the lamb pieces in the same way. Add the onion and garlic (and a splash more oil, if needed) and fry over a medium heat, stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes, then stir in the curry paste and fry for a further minute until fragrant. Return the meat to the pan and stir to coat in the curry paste. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, 300ml cold water and the lentils. Reduce the heat then cover and simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the lentils are soft and the meat is tender. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the spinach and coriander. Cover and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until the spinach has just wilted. Serve with the boiled basmati rice and lemon wedges.

New fruit & veg shop opens in Winchcombe

A new Fruit & Veg shop has recently opened its doors in North Street, providing Winchcombe's shoppers with fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables. The idea behind the business came from shop owner and local resident Sandra Aldridge who saw a niche in the market for locally grown fruit and veg that can be purchased individually. A lot of her customers live on their own and come to the shop to just pick up what they need for the meal they are preparing. "All vegetables are grown locally and my customers love the size of them" says Sandra. "They also like the fact that it comes without packaging." The shop sells leeks, carrots, potatoes, courgettes, swedes, turnips, onions, parsnips, cauliflower and butternut squash. They also stock a great selection of locally made

1916: Happy New Year? The Great War which had started in August 1914 had not been over by Christmas as everyone had expected. Instead it had developed into a stalemate in the trenches of the Western Front and by Christmas 1915 things had hardly changed at all. For this month's article I thought it would be interesting to reflect on life in our local communities during wartime as 1916 dawned out of 1915 a century ago. It was soon very obvious from my researches that the war had made little impact on daily life at home and so most people would have been able to wish each other a Happy New Year. Take for example the concerns of Bishop's Cleeve Parish Council. At the turn of the year its main concern was to appoint 'a good man' to oversee the laying of sewers in Bishop's Cleeve, Southam and

Woodmancote. Harry Goring was the lucky person to be chosen from the ten applicants. When the council was asked by the government to expand the agricultural land in the parish, the brief reply recorded in the council's minute book was that 'there was as much under cultivation as labour could be found for'. Later on in 1916 when the bloody battles of the Somme and Verdun were raging on the Western Front, the council's main concern was having to pay Bayshill Motor Works in Cheltenham ÂŁ6.15s (ÂŁ6.75p) to repair the village's fire engine. Over the hill in Winchcombe as 1915 drew to a close the Parish Council's minutes did, however, record that the council expressed its sympathy to its vice-chairman Albert Day, landlord of the George Inn, on the death of his son Charles in Gallipoli. Charles had emigrated to Australia in 1911 and had joined the Australian army. Later in the new year the councillors expressed concerns

that the soldiers recovering from their wounds in the war hospital in the former infants' school on the corner of Vineyard Street were leaving their chairs out in Abbey Terrace creating a danger to pedestrians during the hours of darkness. Down the road in Gotherington the Parish Council minutes lack any reference to the war. Its main concern at the turn of the year was providing a new trough for the village pump! Desperate for some references to the war, I then turned to the Gloucestershire Echo. Here at least were short reports from the various theatres of the war from around the world, but the paper overall reinforced my conclusion that life on the home front was carrying on largely as normal. The New Year's Eve ball at Cheltenham Town Hall had been a great success with four hundred people enjoying the location where 'everything and everyone was bright and gay'. The reference that 'The khaki uniform was very prominent' did, however, remind readers that there was a war in progress. Aladdin was playing to full houses at the Opera House in Regent Street and 'the crowds in the centre of Cheltenham on the last night of the old year were anything but depressed'. New Year's Day fell on a Saturday and the following Monday saw the start of Cavendish House's annual winter sale. Yet there were a few echoes of concern about the wartime situation. At Tewkesbury Abbey on New Year's Eve it was

reported that the National Day of Penitence had been observed. It was also reported that the first Sunday in January had been set aside for a Day of Humble Prayer because the nation was facing 'a new year of such tense anxiety'. So perhaps it wasn't quite such a Happy New Year after all. - by David Aldred

Home & Interiors New Year, New Style?

By Katherine Sorrell

More easy updates

If your New Year’s resolution is to refresh your home with a fashionable look, interiors expert Katherine Sorrell can help.

Where do I start?

Think about what parts of your home feel most tired and unloved - perhaps walls could do with a wash of fresh paint. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, a goldinfluenced ochre that can be used on its own as a statement or as a highlight in combination with other hues. The overall colour palette for this year is muted, warm and soft yet also sophisticated - think coral, not orange; ochre not yellow and midnight, not blue. Another of Dulux’s 2016 themes is to have vintage and antique references support those of the modernday in a palette that includes chocolate, sand, a deep, pinkish red, muted orange and spicy browns. Ideal to overhaul any style of property.

You may not be in the market for buying new furniture, but there are still ways to update your old pieces for a fabulous new look. Ikea has identified a key trend this year for personalisation – just look at what can be done with an inexpensive chest of drawers, spray paint and some imagination. On a subtler note, a change of paint colour, or even a wood stain, combined with new knobs or pulls will give wooden furniture a new lease of life, while for really on-trend attitude you could have a table top covered in marble, slate or zinc.

Keep going around the house.

Add interest to dull walls with an eye-catching, stick-on-peeloff design, a metal-framed mirror or an oversized print. Boring floor? Time for a new rug – or sand back or paint old wooden boards. Something simpler? Adding a sheepskin to an old sofa or chair will give instant uplift, as will a change of bed linen, towels or small accessories such as cushions, storage baskets or vases. How about lights? A sassy lampshade can alter the look of an entire room, while filament bulbs will give your lighting a hot vibe. What about a cool coat hook, new door knobs, some kitchen canisters or a bathroom soap dispenser? The

smallest things can make a big difference. The high-street chains are brilliant at tapping into new trends with affordable products, so get browsing!

What other trends should I be keeping an eye on?

While a striking monochrome palette of black, white and grey will be big in 2016, opulent metallic accents are also catching on, and work well with modern and traditional decors. The look can be either industrial or retro-glam – as per Bemz’s ‘Deco Glam’ look, described as ‘cosy glamour with a Seventies twist’. ‘Create a more glamorous Seventies style in our homes: think Charlie’s Angels, Studio 54, and Bianca Jagger,’ says Lesley Pennington, CEO of Bemz. She recommends mixing plain fabrics in rose, steel, mineral blue and straw with geometric accents, plus dark wood, shiny brass, fluffy cushions, small tables and statement floor lamps. Alternatively, the Scandi look is all natural, textural, tonal and pared-back, including sheepskin, leather, wood and felt. For more colour, go for a folk-inspired style with brighter tones of red, orange and teal, combined with intricate florals, handicraft and woodland-inspired images. Lastly, Graham & Brown have predicted four trends based around the catwalks at London Fashion Week: meadow prints, statement reds, intricate lace detailing and a throwback to the Eighties. You have been warned… Main Image: Ikea predicts a trend for personalisation, whether it’s using stains, stencils or freehand painting.

Time for a New Tradition By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk If your New Year traditions have dwindled to a rather slurred singing of Auld Lang Syne as the Big Ben chimes fade, why not adopt new ones this New Year or revive old customs? Lucky New year NibbLes It’s a Spanish tradition to eat twelve grapes, making a wish with each one, for every chime of the clock - bringing twelve months of happiness. In the southern US, Hoppin’ John, a traditional dish of black-eyed peas and ham hocks, brings a year of plenty, while Italians eat one spoonful of lentil stew with each toll of the midnight bells. The round lentils represent coins and good fortune, while in Germany, luck comes via tiny marzipan pigs. Greek hostesses places jewellery on a plate on the table to symbolise prosperity in the coming year and hide a coin inside their Vassilopitta (King’s Pie) that brings blessings to its finder. The Portugese also cook King Cake, or Bolo-Rei, which resembles a crown and conceals a lucky fava bean (although the finder pays for next year’s Bolo-Rei, so not so lucky). In Estonia, seven, nine and twelve are lucky numbers, and eating seven, nine, or twelve times on New Year’s Eve is believed to give you the strength of as many men

as meals you’ve consumed. Warning: you may need to diet afterwards. Get DresseD up aND Make soMe Noise Filipinos wear clothes with spots to represent coins and bring luck, and Spaniards and Italians wear red underwear for the same reason. In South America, they opt for coloured underwear too: red for finding love, gold for gaining wealth and white for peace. Mexicans believe red signifies love, yellow means improved employment, green improves finances and white brings good health. Perhaps new underwear for Christmas could be doubly beneficial if you specify the colour? Auld Lang Syne, a traditional song transcribed by Robert Burns and made famous by bandleader Guy Lombardo, is the most popular New Year song in English-speaking communities, but why not make up your own? The tradition of firing guns at midnight is probably best left abandoned, but you could beat drums Swiss-style, bang saucepans Filipino-style, or follow Buddhist Temple tradition by striking a gong 108 times at midnight to expel the 108 human weaknesses.

out with the oLD, iN with the New The first-footing tradition has dwindled in the UK, but the belief is that the first foot through your door after midnight dictates your household’s luck for the year. Tall, dark visitors and new mothers or brides are especially lucky, and should come bearing traditional gifts: coal, shortbread, salt, coins and maybe a tot of whisky. Worth a revival? In Denmark they break old plates at the door of family and friends, but cleaning your house as the Japanese do may be safer. Or why not make a bonfire with the Christmas tree, like the Dutch? While it’s burning, throw on a list of last year’s bad events, Mexicanstyle, or burn unwanted photographs and clothes as they do in Ecuador. In Costa Rica and Venezuela, people run across the street with luggage to wish for new adventures, but leaving a travel brochure under your partner’s nose may be more effective. New resoLutioNs The Babylonians, who supposedly ‘invented’ New Year’s resolutions, returned borrowed farm machinery and tried to start the year debt-free (as many Russians apparently do). Sounds like as good as resolution as any...

Golden Years

Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning California, when the undercarriage of a B-29 collapsed during an emergency landing. The detonator of the plane’s single nuclear bomb went off causing a fire in which 19 people were killed, including an Air Force general).

rather heart-stopping moment when a robot submersible got hold of it, only to drop it again. Another robot submersible managed to tangle itself in the bomb’s parachute lines; on both occasions it was human divers who sorted out the mess. Ortis, meanwhile, claimed salvage rights to the bomb and was awarded a very substantial but undisclosed out-of-court settlement.

At Palomares a B52 collided with a KC-135 tanker while refuelling over the coast of Spain. All four of the tanker’s crew and three of the bomber’s crew of seven were killed. Three of the B52’s bomb load of four hit the ground near the fishing village of Palomares and the other drifted out to sea. The detonators of two of the three that fell ashore were ignited, scattering plutonium over an area of three square kilometres. The US Government subsequently paid out $120m in compensation to 500 local residents who suffered radiation sickness; no-one knows how many Spaniards died as a result but local people working on the clean-up operation were not issued with the protective gear worn by the US personnel engaged on the same task.

After Palomares the USAF seems to have learnt a lesson either about air safety or about the reporting of nuclear incidents involving its aircraft, because only one such has been recorded since, and then in conditions that were egregiously harsh. On January 21st 1968 a B52 crashed immediately after take-off in appalling weather in Greenland. The detonators of all four bombs exploded, setting fire to the plane’s 35,000 gallons of fuel and generating such intense heat that one of the warheads actually melted.

The B28RI nuclear bomb, recovered from 2,850 feet (870 m) of water, on the deck of the USS Petrel

Trident: to renew, or not to renew? This is perhaps not the place to air the pros and cons of the nuclear debate but it is an opportunity to remind readers that January 17th is the golden anniversary of one of the worst – and thankfully almost the last – accidents that the US Air Force had with its nuclear bombs. Many people are surprised to learn how many air crashes or similar accidents involving nuclear bombs there were in the early years of the atomic era. The USAF and US Navy between them suffered an amazing 27 between 1950 and 1968, in which 70 aircrew were killed. In almost all cases the detonators of the bombs being carried blew up, although the bombs themselves didn’t. (Well, you’d probably already know if any had!) The Palomares Incident, in which seven crewmen died, was the last but one of these nuclear near-nightmares, although far from the worst. (That was on August 5th 1950 at Fairfield-Suisin Air Force Base,

The whole thing ended more as farce than tragedy: a Spanish fisherman, Francisco Ortis, saw where the missing bomb had splashed down and guided a recovery fleet of 26 US Navy warships to the spot. It had rolled into a deep underwater trench and took three months to locate and recover: there was a

Anyway, since then, nothing. Not a single bad day at work has been reported. So, since we started by talking about Trident, let’s move on to the safety record of Soviet nuclear submarines. On second thoughts, let’s not!

Finance A Fresh Financial Start in 2016 – Begin the New Year with a Budget By Ann Haldon If you’ve overspent this Christmas, you might be wondering how to get your finances back under control. It’s easy to get carried away by the spirit of giving – the problem is, it can jeopardise your financial wellbeing into the New Year and beyond. So what can you do to get yourself back onto a firm financial footing? One of the first things is to analyse your finances and make a realistic budget. By taking a long-term view and identifying exactly how much you spend during the course of a year, you can take back control of your dwindling finances, and prevent spiralling into long-term debt. Why budget? A budget helps to establish whether you’re living beyond your means. This isn’t always obvious on a day-to-day basis but if you’re constantly spending more than you earn, at some point you might find yourself unable to keep a roof over your head. But there’s a secret to making a budget that’s fit for purpose, and that’s to incorporate every expense that you make during the course of the year, including Christmas, birthdays, summer holidays and more. Birthdays and Christmas Friends’ and family birthdays

may only cost a few pounds here and there, but over the course of a year, and in addition to Christmas expenses, constitute a significant chunk of annual expenditure. It’s going to take some time to calculate your total spend for the year, but once it’s done you’ll be able to use it confidently to improve your long-term financial situation, and set yourself up for a lifetime of control. Non-regular expenses, plus how much is coming in Motoring costs such as car insurance, tax, new tyres and the annual service are easily forgotten. Annual membership subscriptions are also often left out, as is one of the biggest expenses of the year - the summer holiday. When thinking about the money that comes in, don’t forget to include wages, benefit and pension payments, and any income from savings, investments or selfemployment. Once you’ve totalled the figures, deduct your expenses and hopefully you’ll be left with a positive number. Not a static document Your budget isn’t meant to be a static document. It needs to reflect your income and spending in the long-term, and this is likely to change often.

So make it part of your routine to update it regularly, and make sure new expenses and sources of income are carefully recorded. Having a clear idea of where your money goes will also help to meet specific financial goals such as saving for retirement, putting money away for a deposit, or simply avoiding debt. Achieving financial clarity in this way helps you to live the life you want, so don’t view it as a restriction on spending – it’s more like the road to freedom. So you’ve got all your figures – what now? There’s a great way to divide up your money called ‘piggybanking.’ It’s described in detail on the Money Saving Expert website, and essentially means opening a separate bank account for each of your main categories of spending. This allows you to allocate an amount of money to each one via standing order from the main account. The word ‘budget’ often implies having to go without, but knowing your spending patterns and gaining financial control can give you back your freedom – the freedom to enjoy life without the worry of debt. http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/banking/Budget-planning

Business Spotlight New children's day care business about to open in Winchcombe

Hello, I’m Chris Sweet from Radio Winchcombe and this is the latest edition of Business Spotlight. With the ever growing population in our town thought has been given to young families who intend moving to Winchcombe or have already set up a home here. A new initiative for working parents is currently taking place and a mother and daughter team will shortly be combining resources to open up a new nursery in Winchcombe entitled “Mini Vips Nursery Day Care”. Debbie Turner and her daughter, Laura Arnold are joining their two existing childminding businesses together for this new venture and I have had the pleasure to talk to them about it. Q. What made you both decide to take this step? Laura: We have both got very successful and established childminding businesses in Winchcombe and we both have very full waiting lists. The demand for childcare in Winchcombe has grown enormously in the last couple of years with all the new houses being built and we have had to

turn families away because we were full. The opportunity to join forces and move to larger premises will allow us to care for more children in our community. Q. Tell me about your existing businesses... Debbie: I have been a registered childminder for 30 years and Laura for 6. Both our businesses are in Winchcombe. We place a huge emphasis on providing children with the types of activities and experiences that they would receive in a warm, caring home environment. To do this we have a team of enthusiastic and skilled registered childminders and assistants. All of our childminders have gained an “Outstanding” or “Good” OFSTED report. Q. How will this translate to the new nursery? Laura: We’re going to join both teams together to form the new nursery, with the same aims and ethos. From the new premises we’ll be able to offer wrap-around care for busy families in the town and surrounding areas. We’ll be offering childcare from Monday to Friday 7.30am to 6pm for 50 weeks of the year. We’ll also be taking Government childcare vouchers for 2 and 3 year olds. That means that we can care for children from birth to

secondary school age and do school drop-offs and pick-ups as well. Q. What about food? Debbie: We are lucky enough to be able to employ a professional chef who will provide hot evening meals. We’ll also have a breakfast club. Q. Where will the new nursery be? Laura: The new nursery will be on the site of the old Oaklands Nursing Home/Bed and Breakfast on the Gretton Road in Winchcombe. It will have plenty of parking spaces for safely dropping off and picking up children and will provide lots of lovely outdoor play space as well as spacious indoor accommodation. Q. What’s the name of the new nursery? Mini VIPs Nursery and Daycare Q. When will you open? We’re aiming to open in late May/June 2016. Q. How do I reserve a space for my child? Go online to www. minivipsnurserydaycare.co.uk and fill in the enquiry form or call Debbie on 01242 603583. - by Christopher Sweet
