AN OFFER NOT TO BE SNEEZED AT I am welcoming the arrival of July this year, not just because it’s a lovely summer month, but because it should only be a couple of weeks before the grass pollen hay fever season starts to die down. It’s typically at its worst from mid-May, although some people are allergic to other pollens, not just grass, so have prolonged symptoms. This year has been awful though and even people who really don’t suffer as such have reported bouts of sneezing. I am not taking a holiday until the end of August this year, so my summer will be days out in our beautiful countryside, albeit with tablets and tissues packed in my bag. I am particularly looking forward to a day out with my godchildren at the end of this month. We are going to take them to Cotswold Farm Park for the day. Their Maize Maze,
which opens on the 21st, just sounds like so much fun – the kids are going to love it and I am sure so will the adults! I also can't wait to see all the cute animals! There have been lots of "awwww" sounds coming from the Glos Directories team when I clicked my way through a selection of animal pictures provided by the Farm Park while choosing this month's front cover image. Now, if pictures already evoke such a reaction, how great is seeing the real thing going to be! And who am I to have all the fun by myself? Why not take part in our competition for a chance to win a family ticket to Cotswold Farm Park? It couldn't be easier! See page 9 to find out more.

Short Story
Dolphin Watching By Jackie Brewster “It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin-watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap-skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of nettle-lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bottom from a six-bar 6
gate, and cheerfully skidded on loose shale down the sheer cliff face. After an hour of scraped knees and nettle stings, they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the little cove was the colour of clotted cream. It was also covered in beach towels. “I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point wasting money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks. “I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facilities for miles.” “Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said. “Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.” “Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some
eating ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone getting their lollies from?”
“Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.”
“Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull. A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park,” the girl said.
The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two-minute walk.”
Ball valves Siphons Leaks Tap washers Hot & cold pipe work
“How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled.
“What car park?”
PLUMBING
“Look, here comes the dolphin-spotting boat,” Royce said, pretending not to hear.
“Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an ice-cream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”

JOIN YOUR LOCAL WALKING FOOTBALL TEAM Walking Football started in Chesterfield in 2011. Since then it has boomed in popularity and even made an appearance in a TV advert for a bank. It’s very similar to 5-a-side football but running is not allowed. It is great fun and a way for the older person to keep fit and socialise. Winchcombe Walking Football has been running for nearly a year in the Sports Hall on Gretton Road and the group is looking for more players aged 55 or over to join
them. Perhaps you are retired, work part-time or are self-employed and free on Monday afternoons at 3pm? Non-marking trainers required. If you are interested just turn up and ask for Gary or email WinchcombeWalkingFootball@gmail.com.

Family Day Out
SUMMER AT COTSWOLD FARM PARK Cotswold Farm Park is a great way to spend a sunny day this summer, with lots of outdoor activities to entertain people of all ages. The Maize Maze will be returning to the Cotswold Farm Park and will be open from the 21st July to the 2nd of September. This year, the theme of the maze is ‘Wonderland’. The Mad Hatter will be up to his usual tricks and there will be a delightful tea party in the centre of the maze. The usual Farm Park fun will be happening indoors, visitors can enjoy the different seasonal demonstrations; watch a cow get milked in the Milking demonstration and learn about sheep through the ages with the Sheep show.
There is also plenty of chances to get close to the animals, including bottle feeding of lambs and goats and cuddling cute chicks and fluffy bunnies. Take a stroll through the Rare Breeds Through History walk where the animals can be hand fed - the greedy goats will be your best friend if you have a bag of animal food in your hand! EL ROOFING PRESENTER PROFILE PHIL HAWTHORN This month, we are introducing another of RW’s talented presenters... Yes, you can cook on the radio! Phil Hawthorn is living proof. Phil runs a management training company and in his spare time loves to relax by cooking and eating. “One of the big things I get involved with in my day job is managing change… and it can be a frustratingly slow process. One of the joys of cooking is that it brings fairly instant results and even quicker feedback. An empty plate and a thank you is good enough for me.” Passionate about getting people to cook from scratch, he wrote a book entitled “Can Men Cook?“ which works for the absolute non-cook, up to those who want to add a twist or two to their repertoire. And there are lots of jokes and stories. This style is reflected in Phil’s Foodie Show on RW. There is always a recipe of the day, like on the old Jimmy Young show. And there is always some level of foodie news to be aired, as you will all know if you ever read a newspaper or watch TV... Phil likes to bring a bit of science and medicine into the chat too. Originally a biochemist, he finds he cannot switch his inner scientist off, and after all, cooking is just practical science. Phil started broadcasting on another community radio show in Marlow Bucks before moving to Winchcombe in 2017. After 4 years, he has not run out of things to say – yet! - Barbara Herod 10

Gardening
CREATIVE CONTAINERS By Pippa Greenwood
No matter how good your garden may look, without scent it is missing a vital ingredient – and you don’t have to sacrifice colour and texture when using perfumed plants, as many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and is often used to attract attention to the flower and thus entice a suitable pollinator. The insect enjoys the flower’s nectar and pollinates it in the process, increasing the chances of it producing a new generation. Many plants produce an alluring perfume during the evening or night-time, and at this time of day, moths can be useful pollinators, especially during the summer months. So although a plant like the sweetly-perfumed night-scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. Weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches us, and in a windswept spot the perfume can literally be blown away. Unusually low temperatures 12
can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants. Smaller or more subtly-scented plants, such as some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, should be planted in raised areas or in pots – otherwise their perfume can easily pass you by! A small pergola makes a great home for perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? Perfumed roses such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink) have flexible stems and are ideal. Place smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume in your house as it wafts in through windows left ajar. For sitting out after sundown, plant flowers that are at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening
the small creamy-white flowers of nightscented stock take some beating, or try the night-perfumed nicotianas or tobacco plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris. Combine the vibrant colours of bedding plants with some scented stunners in patio pots and other containers. How about some hyacinths or the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple which will produce perfume throughout the summer? Disguise a less-than-attractive house or garage wall with wall shrubs; in a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honeyperfumed scent, or on well-drained soil the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei looks and smells sensational, with its lovely silvery-coloured foliage,
bright yellow flowers and pineapple-scented blooms. Create an arbour from a kit or from scratch and clothe it in perfumed climbers such as sweetly-scented roses or, in a shadier spot, spicily-scented honeysuckle. Sitting in the shade of the plants with their flowers’ scents all around is pure heaven!
Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! SIMPLE PLEASURES A CENTURY AGO
Well-dressed children lead a party down Station Road to Eversfield Pleasure Grounds
In my previous two articles, I outlined the history of the former Great Western Railway main line which is now the route of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. When the line opened in 1906 it breathed life into a remarkable institution in Bishop's Cleeve - the Eversfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds, conveniently situated a short distance down Station Road. I doubt that today many people still possess a piece of souvenir crockery inscribed 'A Present from Bishop's Cleeve'. There might be a scratching of heads regarding its origin as the village does not spring readily to mind as a tourist destination! Yet in the years between the two world wars, it was very much a place to visit. The Eversfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds began as the brainchild of Andrew Denley from Foxcote near Andoversford, who in 1898 bought a bakery with extensive orchard grounds bordering on what became Station Road. Ever an entrepreneur, Andrew purchased some secondhand seesaws and swings from a playground in Charlton Kings, which he installed in the orchard, where 16
he also converted an existing Dutch barn into a tea room, to create a tourist attraction. Andrew particularly wanted to attract groups, especially church groups, rather than individuals; Cheltenham Parish Church Sunday School and Bible Class members, Charlton Kings' Parish Church Guilds, and Hatherley and Reddings Band of Hope and Temperance Society were just three of the groups which visited in the early days. The First World War dampened demand and so it was in the inter-war period that the Pleasure Grounds
really flourished. In his history of his family’s venture, on which much of this article is based, David Denley drew a map (see left) showing the extensive area from where the groups came. At first, it was always by train, with the recommendation that parties of over 200 charter their own, but increasingly visitors came by charabanc and this created real parking problems along Station Road. The war having ended, 1919 marked a re-launching of the Pleasure Grounds. We can learn from the publicity brochure that Eversfield 'should in no way be thought similar to the ordinary “pleasure garden”.' However, nearly a century later we might wonder how the visitors gained so much enjoyment from the rather primitive amusements on offer. These included a large shute for adults and a small shute for children (regularly rubbed with paraffin wax to avoid too many splinters); a circular railway 30 feet in diameter on which two trucks were pushed around by the visitors themselves; a sloping railway 25 feet long with a truck which had to be similarly pushed back to the top; a miniature big wheel which could accommodate eight adults or children;
a simple zip wire; a small roundabout, swings and a sea swing. This latter was a suspended square wooden crate which could be pushed in all directions, thus creating the impression of a rough sea, often leading to similar consequences! Once visitors had tired themselves out on the amusements, or in playing tennis or enjoying games and races in other parts of the grounds, they could sit down to eat 'a good plain tea' provided for parties at the special price of 9d (4p) per head, with white, brown and currant bread and unlimited cakes. Cheaper teas could be provided at 6d (2 1/2p) per head and better class teas 'at moderate prices'. The cost of the tea included admission, otherwise it cost 3d (1p). The Dutch barn soon became inadequate and so two tents were purchased where 600 people could sit down for their refreshments. How Eldersfield Tea and Pleasure Grounds developed over the next twenty years will be the subject of my next article.
- David Aldred The below postcard gives a good indication of the simple nature of the attractions

Via Cotswold Way to Belas Knap (From point B on the map is approx 0.5 mile (0.8km) shorter by following the Cotswold Way).
Belas Knap: Belas Knap is a Neolithic chambered long barrow situated just below the crest of a prominent ridge with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. The long barrow consists of a mound trapezoidal in plan and orientated northsouth. It is about 55 metres in length, roughly 20 metres at its widest and between three and four metres tall. Belas Knap owes much of its present character to a programme of restoration carried out by the Ministry of Works between 1929 and 1931. Prior to this the site was excavated in a series of excavations from 1863 and again in 1928. Under the lintel stone of the ‘false entrance’ were the remains of five infants and an unusual round-headed adult, a type not normally found in Gloucestershire burials prior to 2200 BC. However dating of the Belas Knap human remains in 2000, placed them all between 4000 and 3700 BC. Dents Terrace: Almshouses built by the Dent family in 1865.
