Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Can you believe we are in August already! I’m really not sure where this year has gone and 2016 has certainly been interesting thus far. I hope you are enjoying the summer holidays and the long break isn’t proving to be too much of a strain on you or your purse if you are a parent! The summer holidays can be a worrying time for some parents, whether it’s trying to find childcare, thinking of things to do to keep the children entertained or just being mum’s taxi. Why not take a look in our useful What’s On section in the back of the magazine for some really great ideas on places to take the children or indeed the whole family. If you enjoy trains and teddy bears, then the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is holding Teddy Bear Tuesdays throughout the whole of August. Join in the fun and take along your own Teddy Bear for a day out filled with fun and laughter. Also on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st August the Summer Steam and Real Ale Weekend is back at Winchcombe and Toddington Station. You can come along and raise a glass of real ale to the brewers who have come from all over the country. A Summer Soccer School is being held for a whole week starting on Monday 8th August at Gotherington Primary School. The Soccer School is for both boys and girls aged 7 – 12 years old. For more information and to book a space call 07766 809885. Finally, now that Euro 2016 and Wimbledon has finished, take some time to relax in the garden with a nice cup of tea and read through the August edition of the magazine, because before you know it the school runs will be starting all over again! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

Ten Tips for securing that dream job Securing that really good job does require some effort and preparation. Experiencing job satisfaction and looking forward to going to work are, of course, things most of us aspire to and yes, they can be achieved. If we are fortunate we spend one third or our life at work, so it really is important to get a job that is fulfilling. Fascinatingly, if we are happy at work we are far more likely to be happy in our home and private life too and that again, if we are fortunate, takes up another third of our life. These are a few tips to help with the interview. There is, of course, a lot of other preparation necessary in order to get the interview, but that is a different subject matter. The interview is very important as you want to show your best qualities and attributes to the interviewer and convey the belief, confidence and trust that you could do the job they are hoping to fill. From your point of view, you hope that the interviewer will be trained and skilled in how to interview as, no doubt, you have experienced the frustration of being interviewed by somebody who has not been trained and really doesn’t know what they are doing, at some point in your life. 1. Prepare a professional and honest CV – if you lie, you will be found out...eventually. Do get some help and advice from a professional in the construction of the CV. Most schools, colleges and universities are pretty useless and it’s often best not to take their advice. 2. Gen up on the employer prior to the interview. This is so easy to do via their website and more importantly it will be expected of you to have done your research. 3. Prepare and write your questions to ask at the interview. It is perfectly acceptable for you to refer to your prepared questions on a piece of paper or notebook. This demonstrates that you have made an effort, as well as showing your organisational skills. 4. It is important to sell yourself. This is not done by talking about yourself, selling yourself is done by showing interest in the other person and the business that you are hoping to join. You can ask questions such as ‘How long have you been here?’, 'What do you like about the organisation?’, 'Why is there a vacancy?’, etc. 5. Talk about what you can do for them rather
than what they can do for you. Your mindset should be what contribution can you make/ what can you add to the company. Just remember life is not about taking, a successful and happy life is about giving in all its various forms. 6. Dress for the job you want. People say 'don’t judge a book by its cover’, but that is not what happens in reality. Their first impression will be of what they see when you walk into the room. What you wear in your personal or private life is entirely up to you. But you have no right to superimpose that on your place of work where other people’s income can also be dependent on what you look like. 7. Find out about training and personal development opportunities. Not only will this be helpful for your own personal career, but also demonstrates your willingness to learn which again will benefit your employer. 8. Make sure you meet the immediate line manager; the person you will report to. This is often best done at the second interview as it is so important that you gel within your immediate reporting structure. 9. Don’t ever take a job just for the money, you will end up by being very unhappy. 10. Be enthusiastic – would you employ you? A positive attitude is the most powerful attribute towards securing that dream job, then it’s up to you to maintain it and become a safe pair of hands to your employer. Then you will get promoted and your salary will increase. Good luck and great success.

Winchcombe Country Show Instead of putting your feet up over the August Bank Holiday weekend – get your trainers on and visit the Winchcombe Country Show to participate in a Rio Olympic-themed show! Alongside the traditional flower show with its tremendous displays of vegetables and flowers, we are breathing some Brazilian magic into the show. There will be competitive freestyle swims, baton relays and show jumping. A Brazilian-themed procession will start at 11.30am from the Abbeyfields Centre in Back Lane which will arrive at the show in time for the opening at noon. There will be prizes for the best individuals and team fancy dress. One of this year’s ring attractions will be Stuart Barnes’ Dog and Duck Show which this year has been kindly sponsored by Warner’s Bugden’s. Stuart has observed and trained dogs around the world for over 25 years. He and his
team will be using trained and untrained sheepdogs to herd Indian Runner ducks and help us learn how to communicate with our dogs. It promises to be a lively demonstration. There will be lots of other entertainment and activities including the Happenstance Morris Dancers, go-karting, a traditional Punch and Judy show, street entertainment, face painting and much, much more. The Winchcombe Brass Band will be providing the musical backdrop for the day. The competition marquee will be the traditional hub of the show with many classes featuring creative floral displays, arts, crafts, photography, wine, cookery and preserves. There will be over 50 trophies to win so fill in your entry forms now. New to the flower show this year will be ‘Best Baker’. A prize of £10 will be given to the baker of the best Victoria sandwich. Copies of the schedule of classes are available from John Keeling Newsagents
(High Street) or online at winchcombeshow.org.uk. The deadline for entries is 12 noon on Saturday 27th August. As part of a weekend of events in Winchcombe, there will be the Run Winchcombe Event at Sudeley Castle on Sunday 28th August. The event will consist of a 5k fun run, a 10k hill climb to the Neolithic long barrow Belas Knapp for the more adventurous and a 1k for 10s and under. Entry forms are also available from winchcombeshow.org.uk. It will be an action-packed family weekend for all so please come along and support this local community event. Funds raised from the show will be given to local charities and other local organisations.

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning
The Memorial Cross in the Long Tan rubber plantation
Every 18th August, Australia goes crazy for Long Tan Day – and even more so this year, when it’ll be Long Tan’s 50th anniversary! Never heard of it? Sadly, neither have many Australians (probably). Long Tan wasn’t a particularly remarkable South Vietnamese rubber plantation as South Vietnamese rubber plantations go; and the battle fought there on 18th August 1966 wasn’t a particularly big battle. It was a victory, though, and a victory whose effects lasted until the end of the Vietnam War nine bloody years later. But where does Australia come into this? Well, as SEATO and ANZUS pact signatories, the Australian and New Zealand armies had, since 1962, been secretly training the Americans in the jungle warfare techniques they’d learned in Burma in World War II and during the 1948-1960 Malayan Emergency. But when President Johnson decided to escalate the war he was desperate for overt allies – the “Many Flags” programme – to confer legitimacy on a war the UN wouldn’t and couldn’t support. Harold Wilson, our newly elected Labour PM, offered diplomatic and intelligence support but flatly refused to send any troops – a decision that was to cost him dearly very soon afterwards. Australia Page 10
and New Zealand, though, having regional interests, agreed. A battalion of the Royal Australian Rifles together with light armoured support and 161 battery of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, along with a destroyer and an old aircraft carrier converted into a troop carrier, and a squadron each of Caribou transports, Canberra bombers and Huey helicopters, joined the Americans in 1965. A year later the nowacclimatised 1ATF was given a province of its own to run, Phuoc Tuy on the south coast. Phuoc Tuy was almost entirely run by the Viet Cong and North Vietnam Army; the South Vietnamese ARVN held only the main towns. 1ATF therefore put itself in harm’s way, establishing a base, Nui Dat, right across the Communists’ supply route, and the NVA/VC forces duly prepared to eliminate it. By 16th August the NVA had established guns and mortars at Long Tan, 2km from Nui Dat, and opened fire. These were quickly silenced by RNZA counter-fire, though, and patrols sent out on the 17th found only empty gun positions and mortar pits. On the 18th a company of 108 men was dispatched to locate the NVA, but an entire regiment of the NVA plus a battalion of VC found them first. In a battle that raged for hours in pouring monsoon rain the Australians held off a force 10 times their number, and only survived thanks to the RNZA’s supporting fire and the fresh ammunition dropped by the RAAF. At nightfall they were relieved by reinforcements from Nui Dat, and under cover of darkness the NVA/VC silently melted away. The next
morning’s recce revealed why: while the Australians had lost 18 killed and 24 wounded, they had killed 245 of their enemies. That one day’s battle broke the VC’s grip on Phuoc Tuy for good: two serious attempts to reassert themselves failed and it became the most peaceful – or rather, the least troubled – province in South Vietnam. The Australians and New Zealanders withdrew gradually from Vietnam over the course of 1972, never having been numerous enough to achieve much: even at their peak 1ATF and the other formations numbered less than 9,000, and their governments never allocated them enough air and artillery support to make their tactic of close and continuing infantry engagement as effective as it had been in Malaya. Meanwhile, Wilson and the Labour government paid heavily for a principled refusal to get involved. Johnson, an aide revealed later, would have paid a billion dollars for a single British brigade, enough to close the trade gap that caused the 1967 “pound in your pocket” devaluation crisis. But say what you like about Wilson and his crew: they wouldn’t sell blood for dollars.

We are delighted to invite you to join us at the second Midcounties Co-operative Gloucestershire Fun Day taking place on Sunday 21st August at Newlands Park, Bishop's Cleeve. Every penny we raise this year will go to our three local charities that we work closely with: Riding for the Disabled, The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre and Longfield Hospice. It will be a great day out with plenty to do for the whole family. Attractions include a land train, Punch and Judy show, face painting
and a lot of special characters for the children to see and meet. Danter's Fun Fair will also be in attendance along with go-karts, rock climbing and a racing simulator for the young at heart. BMW, Harley Davidson, Ford and Porsche will also be there along with over other 60 stalls to visit. There will also be a wide variety of food available and the bar will be open! Come along and join us for what promises to be a funpacked day and help us raise lots of money for our charities.
Silent Disco to raise funds in memory of mum A Cheltenham man is organising a family friendly bank holiday Silent Disco to raise funds for a local hospice in memory of his mum.
Craig Shipley, who lives in Arle in Cheltenham, is organising the headphone disco to help raise funds for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court who cared for his mum during her battle with cancer The family friendly event takes place on Sunday 28th August at Seasons, Swindon Village from 5pm until 10pm. Tickets are on sale now for £5 for adults, £3 for under-16s and children under 10 go free. With bouncy castle, face painting, snacks, bar, charity raffle and three DJs/channels to choose from all playing different styles of music it promises to be a ‘super Sunday’ for the family to enjoy together, whilst raising funds for expert
hospice care to support local people and their families. Craig said, “I wanted to organise an event in aid of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice as they were amazing in the latter stages of my mum Alix’s life and have been amazing in supporting many other local families whose loved ones have also been affected by the horrible disease that is cancer.” “I hope we raise funds so that their amazing care can continue and more families can be supported.” “I would really like to hear from local businesses, groups or organisations who can help with donating prizes for our charity raffle.” Mike Tague, Head of Hospice Fundraising at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We offer the only inpatient unit providing specialist hospice care

Events like Craig’s Silent Disco not only bring families and friends together but help raise valuable funds so we can be there for more local families when they need us.”

5. Got a credit card and always repay in full? Make it PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees oversrecently, your cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly , which ding exempted, so still pay a good whack.
The fee-free www. witch.com AmericanExpress.com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex is http://money.asda. com Mastercard which pays 0.5% ason, cashback it can (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis y, if you ap cover.

Well, what an eventful month it has been! Gullivers travels went smoothly with Winchcombe Reclamation managing to transport him safely all the way from Winchcombe on a 100 mile trip down to Marwell Wildlife where he is now in pride of place at the entrance to the zoo and getting lots of attention!

It was quite sad to wave Gulliver off on his big adventure but there is plenty going on here in and around Winchcombe. I’ve just picked up my programme for the Country Show being held over the Bank Holiday Weekend and I’m deciding which cases to enter. There’s so much choice – I’m not sure if I should show off Page 16

I Take It You Are Not A Fan Then? Ben Collins: Of course you know him. He’s was once in the white racing suit on Top Gear and latterly a stunt driver in James Bond films; he knows a thing or two about driving. So it came as no surprise when I learnt the former Stig is none-too-enamoured with the prospect of driverless cars on our roads. He laments that already the likes of lane-departure warning and collision avoidance systems are removing control from the driver and reducing them to “supervising passengers”. “The less of that the better” he says. “This stuff just makes people more prone to get their phones out and start texting.”
A good point. To date the majority of driverless cars have been tested at reasonably slow speed, on test tracks or with a capable human ready to take over if things go wrong (of which, in one well publicised coming together, the bus won). Ben raises a very significant point too: car electronics can go wrong. What happens when the sensors fail or get blocked by road dirt? If, and when, driverless cars are given the go ahead onto our roads (predications range from 10 years to never) they will be competing for road space with millions of existing “conventional” cars, all being driven by us drivers who will offer no special exemptions to the new kid on the block. I’m with Ben in wanting to keep humans in control, because those driverless cars will be, in effect, learner drivers with no L plates. By Iain Betson

Geoff Fox Geoff has been presenting his own music programme on Tuesdays from 8pm to 10pm for several years. He has decided to take a career break for a few months. We would like to thank Geoff for his contribution to the station and hope to see him back before too long.
Annual General Meeting Radio Winchcombe Ltd The AGM was held at The White Hart on 23rd June and here is a summary of the station’s performance over the last year:
Programme Content During our prime time broadcasting (0700 - midnight): • 88% of programmes each week are newly-produced within the last week. • 47% of the programmes contain local content, and over 50% are speech-based. This continues to be quite outstanding for a community station (particularly as it is not centred in a large city and has a small “catchment area” of volunteers and listeners).
Community Involvement One of the key remits of the station is to promote community involvement in preparing programmes, communicating information and developing skills. During the last year this has been achieved through involvement from three schools in our Writing Competition, through our Community Voice programme featuring a different club/ organisation each week, through our local current affairs programme Focus and through our twice-a-day “What’s On” listing of local events. We have also trained approximately 20 people in aspects of the station’s operation including student placements for work experience. Page 24
Finally, there has been a much greater emphasis on outside broadcasts where we have taken the station into the community and broadcast live from local events.
Finance The station has projected annual costs of approximately £14,900 of which £9,460 are operating costs. Projected income from advertising is £4,700. Although the aim has been to cover all of the operating costs through advertising this is now seen as being unachievable given the increase in advertising income necessary to achieve this and the relatively small “catchment area”. The balance of income is currently provided through grants and donations (which are subject to great variability and cannot be relied upon long term). Alternative sources of income need to be secured if the station is to have a secure long-term future.
Organisation There are 72 regular volunteers contributing to the station of which 58 are currently presenters. The station requires approximately 20 support staff (non-presenters) but currently has 10. Additional support is now being provided in the areas of recording/editing programmes and programme scheduling, with the bulk of the support now falling on 6 to 7. This is a healthier position but more support staff are required in areas of programme scheduling, I.T., advertising and marketing.
Broadcasting Licence Renewal Radio Winchcombe has now been broadcasting full time for over 4 years of its 5-year licence term. We need to submit a proposal to renew our licence by early November. You will see from the AGM report that there are both financial and staff shortfalls in keeping the station running 24 hours a day for 7 days each week. It has been agreed that the proposal for the next 5 years should be based on what can be reliably provided with the financing and organisation we have without
putting either under undue strain. Therefore, unless we can add more background staff to the station and find sources of funding additional to the advertising we carry, it will be proposed that we reduce the broadcasting hours to match what can be supported. In addition to this consultation will take place during August and September with listeners, businesses, local clubs and societies, and Winchcombe Town Council to determine what they want from the station going forward in terms of programming and role. This will also strongly influence the proposal for renewal of our licence.
Station Manager Nick Mundy has indicated that he would like to step down from the role of Station Manager at the end of January 2017, giving 7 month’s notice in which to find a replacement and familiarise them with the running of the station. Ideally this new person would be identified during August/ September so that they can play their part in shaping the proposal for renewing the licence. In addition to being Station Manager Nick also manages the finances, provides significant IT support and manages the programme scheduling system. The station will need to find people to cover these areas as well. If you would be interested in performing the Station Manager role or in being involved in any of the other areas, please get in touch via the contact details below for further details.
Country Show The Winchcombe Country Show takes place on August Bank Holiday Monday (29th August) and Radio Winchcombe will be broadcasting live from the show from 10am to 5pm. Please come along and say “hello” and we will do our best to play you a dedication. Get In Touch As ever, if you want to discuss any of the items above please contact Nick Mundy at: office1@radiowinchcombe.co.uk or 07768 777262. Best wishes, Nick Mundy (Station Manager)

Plan Your Planting by Pippa Greenwood
Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year. Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October. Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do well in Page 26
containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering. Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show
even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety. For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Hobbies ‘Nature Deficit Disorder’? Become A Wildlife Recorder! By Kate McLelland According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as “nature deficit disorder”. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day (find out more at www.bnhc. org.uk). However if 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a range of wildlife initiatives Page 30
that keep going all year round. Love our Ladybirds Go to www.ladybird-survey. org to find information about this much-loved insect, which belongs to the scientific family Coccinellidae. These attractive creatures come in a range of different colours and sizes, from the tiny yellow 22-spot Ladybird to the pea-sized Eyed Ladybird. Ladybird research is important because of the recent invasion by the Harlequin Ladybird, which now threatens to overwhelm our native populations. On the Ladybird Survey website you’ll find links to a website where you can record sightings of the Harlequin. buy a mammaL tunneL Even wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures. The Footprint Tunnel is a non-invasive tool designed to help researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints, captured on special inked paper. A Footprint Tunnel kit is available from The Mammal Society at www.mammal.org.
uk at a cost of £15.54 (including VAT). You can download a free, printable guide from the same site to help you identify different species from their paw-prints. add vaLue to your birdwatching hobby BirdTrack is a national research programme that uses people power to supply information on birds where there are currently gaps in our knowledge (for example, very little is known about the timing of arrivals and departures of migrating species). The information you supply to BirdTrack could eventually be used to protect our birds, particularly rare species. Just register on the site www. bto.org as a recorder and the next time you go birdwatching, enter the location you’ve visited, the date and time of your visit then check off the birds you spotted on the list provided. There are many other ways that you can get involved in monitoring wildlife, including a butterfly survey, a national reptile and amphibian recording scheme, a flying ant survey and a shark egg case hunt! These innovative wildlife recording projects are not only a fantastic way to learn about the great outdoors, they also make a real contribution to the nation’s knowledge, so get out there and start recording today.

CHOIRS: Old Hat or the Smart Secret to Keeping Young? Since Gareth Malone broke on to the scene with his youthful looks and those black-rimmed glasses that charmed the socks off those military wives, giving them a new focus on life rather than continually worrying about their loved ones serving abroad, there has been an explosion in numbers of choristers and new choirs. Choirs and groups of people singing together goes back to ages past. Locally there are many different choirs scattered around the county giving pleasure to all that hear them. One such local choir is the Churchdown Male Voice Choir that has been performing as a choir for fifty years. The male voice choir is probably most usually associated with miners in South Wales, where every village had at least one male choir and the joy of singing brought huge health and social benefits to the population. One can imagine the relief of being lifted to the surface after the
toil and hardship endured during a long shift underground in the coal mines. The miners would wash down and greedily quench that growing thirst, generated through the hard work and coal dust, with that first ale, before opening their lungs to release the pent-up emotions, frustrations and dust of the day in song. No wonder the hearty anthems generated from the 'Valleys' are loud, passionate and rejoice the joy and relief of seeing out another day in life's cruel lot. Generally audiences for local choirs are good, but for the male voice choirs there appears to be a false perception that they only sing the songs steeped in tradition and are full of 'old men!' There is a strand of truth in that. Many join these choirs in their 30's to 40's and enjoy it so much they stay. Some didn't think they could sing when they started and many can not read music at the beginning, but they soon pick up the basics
The Davis Cup (by BNP Paribas) Trophy Tour travels to East Glos on 21st August 2015 was the year that saw Great Britain finally lift the Davis Cup again, for the first time in 79 years. To celebrate their victory over the Belgium team, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) have decided to tour the trophy around the country to thank their loyal fans, players, coaches, venues and volunteers. The tour is not only to celebrate this momentous occasion but to inspire the next generation of would-be tennis players. On 21st August the tour will be coming to the East Glos Club in Cheltenham. There will be a multitude of free events available for all ages including coaching sessions for beginners to try the sport. In addition there will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see and be pictured with the Davis Cup Trophy.
Leon Smith, Davis Cup Captain said: “Winning the Davis Cup was an incredible moment for me and all the team. Lifting the trophy on the court in Gent was an amazing feeling and I’m eager to ensure a lasting legacy following this historic achievement. Taking the trophy across the country and being able to share this momentous achievement with the nation is an important part of this legacy.” Michael Downey, LTA Chief Executive explains: “The Davis Cup win is one many will remember for the rest of their lives and is a key vehicle that can drive interest in our sport.” Darren Morris, East Glos Club Manager, adds: “We are thrilled to have been chosen to be a part of this very special Davis Cup Trophy Tour. To allow the local community
and develop enjoying the same comradeship that united those early miners. Time moved on but the health benefits of singing remain. Choirs are always seeking new members, not only for sharing the joy and benefits of singing but to ensure their continued survival. Convincing people that they really can sing once they shrug off their doubts and insecurities is difficult but, once someone takes the plunge, the difference is vast and reflected in their performance. Churchdown Male Voice choir raise 10 -12 thousand pounds each year for local and national charities. The choir is always open to consider helping promote any charity with a performance when contacted directly, so please get in touch. Details can be found online at www.churchdownmvc.com. In its fifty-first year the choir is going back to the roots of its singing - South Wales. In the autumn they will be the guests of top choir Morriston Orpheus in Swansea, and they will also be singing with the Dunvant Male Choir in nearby Mumbles.
to share the successes of the GB team has already driven an increased passion and enthusiasm for tennis in this area. On behalf of everyone at East Glos Club, we thank the LTA for allowing us to be a part of this momentous achievement." Holiday Reads For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend. Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over. The Last of Us – Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heartwrenching story. Page 34
Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters. Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now
is the time to pick up the 40th anniversary edition. Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shutin’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

Nurse Clinics & Pet Advice Available
Keeping up with the challenges of veterinary medicine Here at Folly Gardens we know how important it is to keep up with latest developments and research findings in the veterinary world. All our vets are governed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and as such we work hard to continually develop our professional skills by attending lectures, practical workshops and conferences as well as investing in new kit and equipment to further and maintain our high standards. I’ve seen a few cases this month that made me smile...and what has made me even more cheery is that we have been able to ‘fix’ our patients with minimal pain and risk – whereas even a few years ago it would have been very different.
Lizzie and Brad have just removed a sock from a dog’s stomach!
The name of the game this month: ‘What can I eat that the vet will have to fish out?’ Dogs across the county have been joining in! Socks, cotton reels, lolly sticks (even bits of a bra!) have all been safely removed using our gastro-scope, a long bendy camera we can put down into the stomach. In the majority of cases it allows us to retrieve said ‘treasure’ without ever having to pick up a scalpel. Result – happy vet, happy hound and happy owners.
In our continued commitment to the advancement and improvement of veterinary care, our latest purchase has been our ‘keyhole’ surgery equipment. ‘Key hole’ or laparoscopic surgery has many advantages over more traditional surgical approaches, minimising patient discomfort, improving recovery times and allowing a greater range of procedures to be carried out in house. So far, we have used it to great success in our spays and neuterings (it’s great for playing ‘hunt the testicle’ in the occasional undescended case!) as well as allowing us to take sick patients more safely to surgery for biopsies and exploratory surgery. Keeping our knowledge up to date allows us to gives greater patient care, and this month I have been working closely again with our Chartered Physiotherapist. We see many cats and dogs with mobility and arthritis issues and find that a holistic, whole body approach is giving us the best results. We are using the latest ideas and techniques in physio, acupuncture, diet and chronic pain management to give our patients back their quality of life. All in all, it has been a busy and enjoyable month of learning and inspiration, of working together to share skills, attending courses to learn new ones, and investing in the future of your pet’s care. It’s exciting being at the front of veterinary care and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Have a lovely summer, and if you own a dog of the fluffier persuasion, keep checking for grass seeds!

Health
By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
Modern Technology: Don’t Let It Damage Your Health your monitor’s brightness and contrast. Position your monitor 20-28 inches away. • Follow the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds (preferably at an object around 20 feet away). Modern technology is a great tool for communication and information sharing, but it’s not always good for our health. The problem: Poor Sleep. Blue light emitted by many of our phones, tablets, monitors and flat-screen TVs can adversely affect melatonin, our sleep-inducing hormone. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration, reaction times and immunity, and can stimulate appetite. Long-term, it may affect language processing and our sense of time, and contribute to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Answer: Turn devices off for an hour before bedtime and reduce screen brightness in the evening. The problem: CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) CVS symptoms include eye muscle strain, eye irritation, blurred or double vision, headaches and neck pain. It’s caused by asking our eyes to cope with constant glare and focus readjustment as they flick between different images and text. The Answer: • Install a dimmer switch in your room and/or a glare filter for your screen, and adjust Page 38
The problem: Prolonged Sitting Research shows that prolonged sitting can seriously damage our health and shorten life expectancy - even if we exercise regularly. The Answer: Avoid prolonged sitting when possible, but if it’s unavoidable, break it up with short stints of activity, e.g. housework or a lunchtime football game. Also try: • Standing on public transport. • Walking/biking all or part of the way to work. • Investing in a standing, treadmill or convertible desk (or conversion equipment for your normal desk or treadmill). • Sitting on a yoga ball, which requires constant but subtle effort to stay balanced. • Active Sitting: try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lowering your leg from the knee or the hip height; swivelling your office chair with your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders. The problem: Aches, Pains and Poor Posture Using flat keyboards, laptops, mice and incorrectly positioned equipment can cause back pain, RSI (repetitive strain
injury) and Carpal Tunnel syndrome (tingling, numbness or pain in the hand, caused by compression of the median nerve). The Answer: Think Ergonomics • Sit as close as possible to your desk and keep it clear underneath to avoid twisting. • Set your computer monitor at eye level. Use laptops on a desk with an attached keyboard and raised monitor whenever possible. • Keep hands and wrists warm, and use ergonomic keyboards, mice and mouse-mats. Wrist supports may help. • Check your posture regularly. Beware slouching, leaning forward or to one side, craning your neck or hunching. • Adjust your chair so that: o Your back meets the chair back and your lumbar region is supported (a cushion that fits the small of your back may help). o Your knees are level with or slightly higher than your hips. o Your feet rest comfortably on the floor. o Your elbows are at 90° to your desktop. o Your arms are slightly raised at the shoulders. o The seat doesn’t dig in behind your knees but does support most of your upper thigh (three inches between seat and calf is ideal). To avoid the risks modern technology poses while still enjoying its benefits, remember: sit up, stand up and switch off occasionally!

Gloucestershire gets behind flood hit hospice Individuals, businesses and community groups from right across Gloucestershire have come to the aid of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice following freak flash flooding in June. Following an appeal to help the hospice meet the costs associated with the incident, communities from right across the county have been in touch to make donations, hold fundraising events or offer volunteering support. Gloucester Round Table, Gloucester Rotary, the Freemasons in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Gloucestershire, Tetbury Upton Parish, The Richard Pate School, Howdens and Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce have all made generous donations to the hospice amongst many other local groups and businesses, while residents and friends in Winchcombe held a coffee morning at the Guide Hall raising much needed funds. Individuals from every corner of the county have donated too, with a number of future activities planned to raise further funds including coffee mornings and a dress down day at Bovis Homes. The result has seen over £10,000 raised in just three weeks, with further vital donations being made. S
Elise Hoadley, Hospice Director at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “I know I speak for everyone at the hospice when I say we have been truly touched and overwhelmed by the response of Gloucestershire in the wake of flash flooding to our day hospice.” “To every single person, business and community group who have donated or been in touch to offer help or support, thank you.”
“The flood really could not have come at a worse time for us. Like many other charities we’re struggling in the current financial climate and we were faced with the possibility of having to divert precious funding away from providing our care to cover the costs associated with this incident.” “The response of the wonderful people of Gloucestershire meant this is no longer the case and the funds we work so hard to raise so we can deliver our care can continue to be spent on providing that care supporting local people and their families.” “The support has been amazing, but as a charity we still need extra funds to help provide our care.” The hospice’s insurer, Gloucesterbased Ecclesiastical, has also pulled out all the stops to make sure patients can get back into the purpose-built day hospice building as quickly as possible. The insurer’s contractors have been working around the clock to dry out and repair the building with up to 30 industrial blowers drying the ground floor of the building 24/7, brand new flooring was laid and new fixtures and fittings added. Originally it had been thought it would take up to two months to dry out and repair the building, but thanks to everyone’s hard work hospice patients moved back in at the beginning of July following a final deep clean of the building. Beccy Day, Day Hospice Manager, continued, “Our insurers Ecclesiastical have been fantastic. Working with their contractors they have gone above and beyond to repair and return the building to us as quickly as possible. The speed and efficiency at which they
have worked has meant repairs have been completed well ahead of schedule.” “During the flood and repairs we transferred the day hospice service to our staff dining room and hospice chapel so we could still provide our care. I was delighted to welcome our patients back into our beautiful day hospice building so quickly following the flood.” David Bonehill, claims director at Ecclesiastical, said, “As a specialist insurer we understand the need to put things back in order quickly. Losing such a key building overnight can have a huge impact on any organisation. However, in the case of a charity the impact is often felt much more widely as it can mean a reduction in the services they can offer to the community they serve." “We are absolutely delighted to have been able to turn this project around so quickly enabling the Hospice to re-open within weeks and continue to provide the much needed care and support for our local community here in Gloucestershire.” For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice please call www. sueryder.org/Leckhampton

Home & Interiors Come Back To Carpet
Modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an enormous choice of colour, pattern and texture. Why choose carpet? Carpet is soft and comfortable underfoot, absorbs sound, is non-slip and forgiving if you have a fall, and is insulating against heat loss and draughts; however, it may stain and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance carpet needs, but accidental spills can be hard to deal with, and it’s unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood. choosing a carpet As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need, while the shorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear, meaning there is a tradeoff between softness and comfort against durability Page 42

and resilience. Standard carpet descriptions are for light, moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which gives a good indication of suitability. So a hallway carpet should be very tough and classified for heavy domestic use, while a living room (general domestic) probably requires a luxury look combined with robust performance, and a spare bedroom could be more delicate. If you choose a carpet suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens and bathrooms. Ask your retailer for samples and take them home where you can see them in your own environment and light. If redecorating from floor to ceiling, choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme co-ordinates - the floor is the largest visible area in a room, so it’s important to get it right. Don’t forget the cost of underlay and fitting and get your room professionally measured, and when replacing a carpet, always buy new underlay. This ensures your new carpet sits properly and wears evenly and can prolong its life by up to 40 per cent. image - Padstow candy spot carpet, £69.99 per square metre, Brintons, tel 0800 505055, www.brintons.co.uk.
carpet fibres
Wool: Flame-retardant and compression resilient, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand. nylon: Extremely hard-wearing with the greatest abrasion resistance. It takes dye and stainresistance treatments well. polypropylene: Resistant to stains and abrasions, wears well and is value-for-money. Used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, with a lustrous appearance, mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres are blended together. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (probably the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.
carpet pile
loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Avoid if you have pets. cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. saxony: A deeper pile with a soft feel and appearance. shag: Extra-long pile. twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.

Travelling Abroad This Year? What’s the best way to spend your money?
It used to be a simple choice between traveller’s cheques or cash, but now there’s a variety of cards that offer more convenience and security when spending money abroad. In fact there are so many, it can be a bit of a minefield when trying to choose the right one. Traveller’s Cheques Good old-fashioned traveller’s cheques can be useful as a backup. Fee levels and exchange rates vary greatly according to the country you’re in, however, and also between individual banks. Pros • Handy if you don’t want to carry large amounts of cash. • Can be replaced within 24 hours if they’re lost or stolen. Cons • Exchange rates can fluctuate widely, and are generally poor when compared with other payment methods. • You pay a fee when you buy them, and also commission when they’re exchanged. PrePaid Cards Some of the newer prepaid cards offer very competitive exchange rates, as well as extra features such as a smartphone app. A word of warning though - there have been problems accessing money abroad using some prepaid cards, as it’s not always made clear that the first Page 50
time you use the card, it has to be at a cash point. Pros • They’re pre-loaded, so it’s easier to budget and you can lock in a good exchange rate. • Convenient and easy to use, but check the rules carefully. Cons • If the card is lost or stolen you may be charged for a replacement. • Some providers charge high fees. CrediT Cards Still one of the most popular ways to spend money abroad, credit cards give you interestfree credit as well as valuable consumer protection. You also have the same fraud protection as in the UK, so if the card is lost or stolen you should be covered. Pros • Some protection for goods over £100 via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. • They’re safe and secure, but make sure payment is taken in front of you. Cons • There’s a risk of fraud or ‘cloning’ if the card is taken out of sight when you pay. • If you withdraw cash you’ll be charged daily interest. debiT Cards You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but you’ll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. There’s no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros • Easily blocked if the card is
lost or stolen. • Chip and pin protection. Cons • No consumer protection as with credit cards. • Charges can quickly add up if you withdraw cash regularly. Cash Although it’s not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, you’ll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around £200 to £500 of cash on average. Pros • You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go. • Can be used anywhere. Cons • May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. • Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. It’s a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and traveller’s cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange. https://www.moneyadvice service.org.uk/en/articles/travelmoney-options-cash-cards-andtravellers-cheques http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/credit-cards/prepaid-travelcards http://www.money.co.uk/travelmoney/what-is-the-best-way-tospend-abroad.htm http://blog.moneysavingexpert. com/2013/03/12/using-plasticoverseas-always-pay-in-euroseven-if-it-says-0-commission/
