Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, It’s that time of year again when the schools will be out soon for the summer! With that comes the question of what we can do to keep the children entertained. Fortunately, we have a great 'What’s On' section for you towards the back of the magazine for some ideas of days out and local events you can go to. Make sure to also keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages as we will be adding more events as they come in. July is a great month for music lovers with the Cheltenham Music Festival running from the 5th to the 16th July. The Festival, now in its 73rd year, presents a vast range of classical music – symphonic, choral, chamber, contemporary and early music – joined by jazz, folk, electronica, spoken word, film and various family events. A great big 'well done' to everyone who took part in the Race for Life last month in Gloucester or the Relay for Life in the Forest of Dean, you did everyone proud! I hope you have a great month ahead! For me, July equals watching Wimbledon and sunny days in the garden, so I’m looking forward to it! Best wishes, Vicky Muller

A Perfect 10 for Wagging Tails! 10 Years of happy dog holidays and £10,000 raised for Hearing Dogs Charity Local businesswoman Alexis Bennett, owner of Gloucestershire dog boarding company Wagging Tails, was recently welcomed to the headquarters of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People at The Grange in Buckinghamshire to celebrate the Wagging Tails' 10th Birthday. Since Wagging Tails began supporting Hearing Dogs for Deaf People in January 2014 they have helped to raise over £10,000 for the charity. The celebrations saw Alexis present a cheque for £10,000 to Sir Stuart Hampson, President of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, before the cutting of the birthday cake and a toast celebrating 10 years of Wagging Tails and 35 years of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Speaking on behalf of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Nicholas Orpin, Community Fundraising Manager for the South East, stated: "Wagging Tails is such a great company and their customers get a unique and fantastic service. But they don't just stop there, they also help to change lives of deaf people by supporting Hearing Dogs, and that

tells you what great people they are too." Alexis launched the Gloucestershire branch of Wagging Tails in January 2016 and has successfully established her business as the premier dog holiday service provider in the locality. Alongside her work developing her business, Alexis is a keen and active supporter of Wagging Tails' Alexis Bennett of Wagging Tails presenting Sir Stuart Hampson, President of Hearing Dogs charity partner and is in the for Deaf People, with a cheque for £10,000. process of organising "Take the Plunge 2", a charity deaf and those with partial hearing day whereby volunteer "casualties" loss. Calling all cyclists Tandemonium is a Cheltenhambased group for visually impaired people to get out on bikes, even if they don't have enough sight to ride. Using tandems, the visually impaired person rides behind a sighted pilot to explore new places, keep fit, make friends and, most importantly, to have fun! People with vision problems often have difficulties accessing sport and leisure activities which can leave them feeling isolated. We hope Page 6

that Tandemonium will become their freedom on wheels! However, the group can't exist without the help of volunteers to ride on the front of the tandem. It's a rewarding experience and a great way to make new friends. We would ensure you had the necessary training to feel confident when riding with a visually impaired person. If you're a keen cyclist or just like getting out on a bike, please consider supporting Tandemonium.

History of Almshouses in Winchcombe

Almshouses can be traced back to monastic times where the term described the provision of accommodation for those in need. Many of the Almshouses that survive today occupy listed buildings and some are over 400 years old. The oldest Almshouses in Winchcombe belonging to the

Trust were built in 1573 with the patronage of Lady Chandos of Sudeley Castle and they still bear her coat of arms today. Chandos Flats have been renovated this year to provide ten comfortable studio apartments for single people plus a two bedroomed flat.

also been updated recently to provide comfortable twobedroomed accommodation.

Dent’s Terrace was built by the Dent family also of Sudeley Castle. These houses were completed in 1865 and were designed by the eminent architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. Dent’s Terrace is a well-known landmark in Winchcombe and is often admired and photographed by visitors to the town.

For more information visit www.winchcombealms.org.

Chandos Flats and Dent’s Terrace both have their original allotment plots which are available for the use of residents.

There are ten of these cottages and they were originally built for the retired workers from the Sudeley estate but today anyone who meets the Trust’s criteria can apply to live there. They have

Registered Charity No 1168158

Chandos and Dent’s Almshouses provide accommodation for people of limited means and good character who live in the Winchcombe area. Applicants must be able to live independently and fit in with the existing Almshouse community. The trust does not provide care. Applicants for Dent’s Terrace are usually over 55 years.

If you would like further information and would like to apply, please fill in an enquiry form. For enquiry forms and further information visit www.winchcombealms.org or Winchcombe Town Council Office, Abbey Fields Community Centre, Back Lane, Winchcombe GL54 5QH. Overbury Bowling Club continues Winning Form Overbury Bowling Club (www.overburybowling.net) has started the 2017 season with many excellent wins.

and Gillian Pearce, Barbara Baldwin, Sally Lewis and Daphne Hayward had scored 25-5. An excellent win for the ladies.

In the Mens WBA County Fours (Rinks) fielding a team of Stuart Yapp, Mike Mace, Dan Mason and Neil Williams, Overbury Bowling Club progressed to the second round with a 27-20 home victory over Hewell. Neil Williams, the Overbury Captain, said "After a slow start, Overbury scored a 7 and then immediately followed it up with a 5 to have a comfortable lead at the half way point. Hewell had clearly not read the script though, and staged a comeback by gaining a 4 and a 3 on consecutive ends to ensure the game was close until the last few ends when Overbury closed out the victory."

After a rain-interrupted match, Sue Robinson, Sally Lewis, Gillian Pearce and Daphne Hayward played Bredon in the Ladies WBA County Rinks scoring a win of 19-6 when Bredon conceded after 19 ends.

Then in the Ladies WBA County Double Rink, Evesham conceded after 12 ends when Pam Jones, Yvonne Cole, Jean King, and Jan Newton had scored 21-2,

Not to be outdone, Mike Mace, Dan Mason and Neil Williams played Broadway in the Mens WBA County Triples when Broadway conceded after 14 ends with the score at 20-3. If only every team would concede, it would be so much easier to win the championships! In the Ladies WBA County Triples, Sandy Mace, Daphne Hayward and Gillian Pearce braved damp and blustery conditions to score a good win at 19-11 against Manor Park. The match was much closer than the scoreline suggests and was enjoyed by all the players and supporters.

Overbury recently scored their 5th successive win in the Mens SWT Triples League, this time against Evesham A with a scoreline of 46 - 31. Stuart Yapp, Overbury's captain, said "This was an excellent win against Evesham A on their green as, for the previous 2 years, we had to accept second place. In the league table, we are now 9 points ahead of this time last year and must keep focused for the rest of the season to maintain our record and go for the league win." On total points won, this puts Overbury at 1st equal in the league table but 4 shots adrift on the tie-breaker. Against Tewkesbury, the seniors enjoyed glorious weather with the green playing very fast for so early in the season. Despite being behind at the halfway stage, Overbury pulled together and achieved a 93-80 win. Alas, against Churchdown and Cheltenham Spa, Overbury were not so lucky and finished in second place. However, the seniors returned to winning ways with a 93-64 score against Littleton. These matches are always played in good humour and camaraderie, regardless of the result, and enjoyed by all. After having trouble to field a full team at the beginning of the season and suffering associated penalties, Overbury has found their winning form in the Mens Concorde league with recent wins. Coming in at 91-89 against Hewell and 83-78 against Littleton, Mike Ames the team captain said “Another good performance and revenge for our defeat earlier in the season. We were 21 shots up after 15 ends but Littleton clawed them back and was in the lead. Then the desire not to lose kicked in and in the last 2 ends we won 83-78. In the ladies Concorde league, the team recorded a notable win against Littleton and are now trying to repeat that success against other clubs. For anyone who has wondered if bowls might be the challenge they seek, come along and try it out with the help of one of our coaches to get you started on the right path. New members, both young and senior, are always welcome to join in this very social and sporting activity. Safe Journey by Pippa Greenwood

Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. However, don’t forget to ensure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there; it is worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t take something home the day you buy it if it is too large to fit in your car. However slowly you drive, if the plant is sticking out of a sunroof or window the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged, and it is possible that a stem may be broken. Almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius, so take advantage of this service. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures increase Page 16

quickly in a closed car, even with the windows or sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but you should travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage. Make sure that it is tied down extremely well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so be sensible. Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary

tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden. And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress. Healthy Geek

If you’ve got a fairly recent smartphone, chances are it’s already capable of improving your health. Be it an iPhone or Android, you’ll be able to measure your heartbeat, daily steps and set your own goals using a choice of free or inexpensive apps using the features already built-in to your handset. For example, you could install Charity Miles, an app that donates money to good causes in return for your physical activity. It works with any brisk movement, so you can do your part just by walking the dog if you’re not yet a marathon runner. The first time you see your heartbeat via your mobile is enlightening! Most phones use an optical sensor that detects tiny changes in light through the camera (if you want to find out more about how this works, search for photoplethysmogram on Wikipedia). However, you have to make sure to use the system correctly. If you don’t cover the lens fully, you might get a rather misleading set of data. If you want to go fully down the tech-health route, you might consider a smart watch or tracker device for a more reliable and comprehensive reading. The market leader in tracking our daily steps is a company called FitBit. Their current Page 20

bestselling device is the FitBit Charge 2 (£109) which looks like a minimalistic watch but actually combines heart-rate monitoring with an altimeter, an impressive app and 5-day battery life. Link it to your phone via Bluetooth and it guides you through the easy set-up process. However, if you think charging it every week might annoy you, try the Moov Now, an alternative to FitBit which will give you realtime voice guidance for running, swimming or your general workout routine. It’s cheaper at around £50 and the battery is designed to last for months before you need to replace it.

There are loads of apps and YouTube videos out there to help you with meditation, yoga and even tackling your phobias but very few so far to help you monitor your emotions. In the last few months, my team have invented a way to measure happiness through your social media output. A solution which requires no wearable device or additional learning to use. You’re welcome to try it at PostMood.com In the age of robots, it seems that we’re not necessarily going to become lesser humans. We have every opportunity to use technology to reach our goals in a myriad of different ways. Be it a morning mindfulness session or being more aware of the way we cook and prepare our evening meal, the geeks are here to help us enjoy a healthy, happier future.

Of course, fitness isn’t just about pushups. There are subtler ways technology can ensure we have a more rounded lifestyle and less rotund belly. “If It Appreciates, Buy It. If It Depreciates, Lease It” Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it. But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad. Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the pay-scale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other mass-market car, I advise leasing every time.

Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiatbacked lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them. So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car. Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. But production line jelly-moulds? Forget it. Lease every time. By Iain Betson

Cake and Bake Peach Crostata

A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.

Ingredients:

1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl.

PASTRY • 350g plain flour • 175g butter, chilled and diced • 2 tbsp caster sugar

2.

• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp cold water FILLING • 6 peaches, halved, stones removed and thickly sliced

3. 4.

• 2 tbsp caster sugar • 2 tsp cornflour • Milk to glaze

5.

• Icing sugar, to dust

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling TIP

If you don’t have a pastry lattice roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin strips and drape over the filling. Page 24

6.

7.

Add the butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture begins to stick together. Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish. Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip). Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess pastry. Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.

Have you ever been puzzled too?

Some time ago a photograph of this small round thatched building at Seven Springs appeared in the Gloucestershire Echo. There followed lively speculations about its function; none of which were correct. This made me think about an aspect of country life which is rapidly fading from memory - the country carrier. In this article, I will set the general scene and my next will focus on our local carriers. Few readers are likely to remember the country carrier, that essential link between the village and market town in an age when the railway brought goods to the towns and their shops but not to the surrounding villages lacking their own railway station. The typical carrier was a one man concern owning a horse and cart of various shapes and sizes who travelled to the nearest market town once, twice or three times a week, carrying

the village shoppers and running errands for those who could not go themselves. So how does this link to the building standing at Seven Springs, known locally as the parcel house? It was there for the country carrier from North Cerney to Cheltenham to leave the parcels and newspapers to be collected by the good folk of Seven Springs for whom he ran errands. Amazingly, I took a photograph of it before the road junction was rebuilt several years ago and, also amazingly, it was rebuilt and not demolished with the junction's remodelling, even though it is not an exact replica. The age of the country carrier lasted from the 1820s to the early 1950s. The main centre in our county was originally Gloucester, but when Cheltenham grew as a spa town with an increased number of shops, it too was a busy centre and became the destination of those carriers who served Bishop's Cleeve, Winchcombe and surrounding villages. At the height of the carriers' popularity in 1880, fifty different carriers operated one hundred and fourteen journeys each week into Cheltenham; each of them ending at one of ten of the town's

The parcel house before it was rebuilt Page 28

inns and hotels. Almost all of them stood on the High Street, stretching from The Shakespeare (now The Shamrock) in the Lower High Street, which is now often referred to as the West End, to The Old Swan in the Strand. Fortunately, both of these still survive, but nearly all the others have disappeared over the years as the town centre has been constantly redeveloped. Not only did these inns provide a convenient drop-off and pick-up point for any passengers, but they provided the carrier with the facilities to park his cart, water and feed his horse and if he had few errands to distract him, enjoy the hospitality of the establishment whilst picking up juicy town gossip. On many occasions, the fact that his horse knew its way home saved the carrier's reputation, even if on the climb to the Cotswolds at Cleeve Hill or above Dowdeswell or up to Seven Springs, the luckless passengers were expected to get out and push! In fact, the carriers' carts were often so overloaded and underpowered that it was quicker to walk anyway. At the beginning of the last century, the wives of the farmers and market gardeners in Bishop's Cleeve more often than not used to walk carrying their eggs, butter, fruit and vegetables to sell in Cheltenham, rather than rely on the carrier's cart. Produce sold, they then walked back. Until the arrival of the Great Western Railway in our area in 1906, it was the country carrier on whom the inhabitants of Bishop's Cleeve, Winchcombe and surrounding villages depended for their link to Cheltenham. I will investigate this in detail in my next article. - David Aldred

Home & Interiors Update Your Bathroom for Summer can make a big difference. Think about adding artwork to the walls, too, for colour, pattern and a dramatic focal point.

Give your bathroom an appealing summer makeover with our easy-toachieve tips. A DASH OF PAINT Any room can be updated with a lick of paint, and bathrooms are no different. Choose specially formulated bathroom paint, which provides longlasting protection against condensation and mould. Fresh white looks great in a bathroom, while deeper shades such as charcoal or navy make a striking impact, and mid blues, greens or yellows are fresh and cheery. UPDATE YOUR ACCESSORIES Choose all sorts of fashionable new options for items such as towels, soap dishes, shower curtains, even loo roll holders and toilet seats, from graphic patterns to flamingo designs or marble and copper - little things Page 30

REPLACE YOUR TAPS AND WASTES Out-of-date tap styles and scratched wastes are easy for a plumber to replace, but take advice on technical considerations like water pressure and how far taps should project over the basin - then choose functional styles that you love. You could also save on bills by installing watersaving taps and an aerated or low-flow showerhead. CONCEAL CLUTTER The easiest way to create storage space is with a slimline, wall-mounted cupboard (perhaps with a mirror on the door), though other options include racks, rails, shelves and hooks. Matching baskets, rows of glass jars and small wooden crates are pretty and help keep things tidy, while free-standing caddies and towel ladders conveniently hold heaps of stuff. AT THE WINDOW Consider replacing a dull roller blind with something more interesting - Roman blinds, café curtains or wooden louvres or shutters are all good options, or a cheap and instant transformation is possible with frosted adhesive film. ADD A PLANT Houseplants are back in fashion once again, so look for plants

By Katherine Sorrell

that thrive in damp conditions and are happy with the level of light in your bathroom. Options include peace lilies, English ivy, reeds, palms and Boston ferns. BRING IN MORE LIGHT Mirrors help make your smallest room feel brighter and more spacious, so an oversized mirror will be a statement piece as well as an essential element. Swapping to LED lighting will save money in the long run, and changing the light fittings themselves is a quick job for an electrician if you want alternatives that are good-looking and up-to-date. Remember that they must comply with safety regulations and be certified for use in a damp environment. ATTACK OLD GROUT Try cleaning discoloured grout with proprietary products first, but if the mould or stains won’t shift, buy a special grout rake from a hardware store and carefully remove the old grout to a depth of at least 2mm, then apply new grout. While you’re at it, remove black and mouldy silicone sealant with a sharp knife, then clean and dry the area thoroughly and re-apply new sealant. You’ll need a steady hand for this bit, so take a deep breath before you start, and if in doubt, search for an online video for guidance.

Radio Winchcombe Out and About

Wychwood Festival is an annual music festival held at Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, UK. As well as music, the family-friendly three-day festival includes workshops, comedy, and the Children's Literature Festival. The festival began in 2005 and features mostly indie, folk and world music. It is known for its family-friendly feel, big range of music on offer, plus loads of other activities including 100 workshops for all ages, comedy, cinema and much more. The event has a much laid back vibe and it has been nominated Best Family Festival in the UK Festival Awards every year. This year the weekend festivities took place on the 2nd to the 4th June and Radio Winchcombe presenters were there in force to interview backstage the many artists featured on the extensive programme. The event has traditionally been sponsored by the famous Wychwood Brewery of Witney, Oxfordshire. Summer the Season for Festivals! The world famous Glastonbury Festival took place from the Page 32

21st to the 25th June and our intrepid duo Bev and Ros of Friday and Saturday “Drive-time” were there to soak up the atmosphere. Each year they have tried to connect “live” at the event but with over a quarter of a million excited fans trying to upload to social media, it has always proven difficult to connect to the internet! Ros and Bev

I am positive they had a great time and hopefully, you will be able to catch up via the listen again link at radiowinchcombe.co.uk. And looking to the future, and of course a little closer to home, Radio Winchcombe will be live at The Winchcombe Country Show on Bank Holiday Monday, August 27th. So come along and take the opportunity of being “on-air at 107.1fm!” Progress at the Station by Philip Arkell, Interim Station Manager Since February Phill Hawthorn has started a foodie show, Bill Bartlett his Happy Hour and Jo Durrant of BBC Radio Gloucestershire has started an arts programme. Ed Payne will be starting a show with teen/ youth appeal while Charles Dewhurst is hoping to join our presenting team shortly.

Jo Durrant John Oldham our presenter development expert also has two prospective presenters in the pipeline. This just proves that people wish to engage with the Station. On the technical side, we did have a little hiccup as our transmitter developed a fault which virtually put us off air in May. We were extremely grateful to Corinium Radio for the loan of a transmitter to keep us going while repairs to our transmitter were carried out. Funding and Advertising Revenue is Critical As a not for profit organisation, the two key areas that could threaten our future are fundraising including advertising and the recruitment of programme schedulers. However, this will have been discussed at the Annual General meeting on the 27th June last and the writer hopes to provide an update in a future issue of this magazine. On a more positive note, Philip has been in contact with Ofcom with a proposal to increase Radio Winchcombe’s broadcast area to cover a broader area outside of town. This would not only give us more listener opportunities but
