Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Welcome to the March issue which as always is packed full of local events and essential local businesses should you need one or more! What a fabulous month if you happen to be an Easter Egg loving, Horse Racing Fan who is a Hot Cross Bun eating Mum that loves being pampered for the day! If that’s you, bring on March, which is the month of all months for you! The Cheltenham Festival takes place on the 15th-18th March, when the County becomes the focus of the racing world with four outstanding days of National Hunt Racing. The event is an important date for many of our local businesses who benefit from the mass influx and financial spend of the people that attend, and it creates many part time jobs for hundreds of local people. Spring is also on the way and at the time of writing this the daffodils are starting to come out – I so look forward to the beautiful daffodil displays each year! Perhaps in part because it is a sign that I’ve made it through the winter! Remember that the clocks go forward 1 hour at 1am on Sunday 29th of March and all the best until next month. Vicky Muller

Richard Denny Your Success Coach The media have called Richard Denny ‘The Millionaire Maker’. For over 30 years he has helped thousands of people into financial wealth, and others into greater achievement and happiness. His lectures, books, videos, DVD’s and CD’s are bought around the world.
10 Tips for overcoming the fear of speaking in public If you have never spoken in public before or had to make a wedding speech, or even a vote of thanks, you more than likely dread the thought of it. Maybe you’ve had a bad experience and now you have a crisis of confidence, if that is so you are just like me and millions of others. Let me assure you these fears and more can be overcome. I personally was terrified of having to make a speech until I was 36 and then learnt how to do it and have since given literally thousands of presentations around the world. The most common fears are these: Fear of drying up Fear of forgetting Fear of trembling hands and trembling voice Fear of boring people Fear of not sounding right Overall can be summed up by ‘making an ass of myself’
So here are 10 tips that will get you started and help you overcome those fears: 1. Prior to writing the speech/presentation collect ideas, stories, interesting facts or anything that you may be able to use. 2. When you write the speech there must be a beginning, a middle and a close. 3. The beginning is to get the audience's attention. To achieve this, you can use an interesting fact or a people story. Try to avoid a weak joke. 4. The middle is the content, this is where you make your case and present your theme. 5. The close is the call to action suggesting something that everybody can do or take away. 6. Illustrate the speech with people stories, genuine case histories and examples. 7. Avoid streams of facts and figures. If necessary, they have to be on a hand out or can be easily read from a screen. 8. Always take some deep breaths before you start as this will settle your nerves, and say to yourself ‘I’m going to enjoy this and everybody else, I’m sure, will enjoy it too.’ 9. Always have some notes with big writing, your notes must be your aid – not a trap. 10. Speaking and presenting is not an ego trip, your message is for the benefit of everybody else. So remember the six P’s - Proper planning prevents particularly poor performance.

The Gardeners Arms is a thatched 16th Century independent free house run by Mike and Wendy Wakeman supported by their professional team of charming staff, set in the idyllic village of Alderton.
To follow we had the Pan Fried Seabass on crushed herb potoatoes, pak choi and a lemon saffron sauce and the Homemade "secret recipe" Beef Burger with it's traditional accompaniments.
The pub has recently undergone an elegant refurbishment and you can relax in the stylish booths adjacent to the bar or sink into the tailored leather chairs whilst deciding what freshly produced, home-cooked meals to order.
Unfortunately we were totally satisfied and beaten by the previous courses, that we couldn't sample the mouth watering pudding menu.
I had the Chinese-Style Shredded Duck with pancakes and hoi sin sauce and my very dear friend sampled the Molten Cotswold Brie with caramelised red onion chutney and a selection of breads for dipping, both were delicious and ideal for sharing.
The service was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble, complimented by the warm and friendly atmosphere. We would highly recommend The Gardeners Arms in Alderton- we need to go back to try the scrumptious puddings!

Zaza's Blog What a blustery few weeks it’s been with inclement weather and storm Imogen raging past. Luckily, I managed to keep my hooves dry but it took a lot of effort not to be blown away...I even lost my tail and had to undergo emergency repairs to fix it back on! Now things seem to have calmed down a little and from my viewpoint I
can see the first signs of spring with blue skies, blooming flowers and lambs beginning to appear. In fact, it’s an ideal time to visit the Cotswold Farm Park where you will soon be able to see another one of Daves’ creations... I have kept myself busy recently by studying the form for the Cheltenham races and will be placing my bets soon. Unfortunately, training didn’t really work out too well as they couldn’t find a saddle big enough, so I shall only be a spectator this year but will be at the roadside to greet everybody travelling to and from the Racecourse... In other news, I may soon be joined by my Brother (he is being sketched out at the moment and promises to be even bigger) so we can enjoy a family trip down to Marwell zoo in the Summer. Think I might start packing...what should I wear...?

What is Hypnodontics? Fear of the dentist’s chair? Fiona Vitel, a fully trained and certified clinical hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner, began her practice a decade ago in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Her highly successful hypnotherapy business flourished more by word-ofmouth than advertising and her name and presence was known through various media interviews on radio and various editorials in newspapers and magazines throughout the region. Fiona trained in the USA and London. A first generation Australian, born to British parents, she decided to return to England, after nine years in the United Arab Emirates, and has established her office in the central Cotswold town of Winchcombe. A decade of experience and with thousands of sessions under her belt, Fiona leads as an established professional.
Hypnodontics is the art and science of using hypnosis to induce comfortable and pain free dental visits. Many people are scared of visiting the dentist. I can help deal with whatever issue you might have such as discomfort, anxiety, panic, fear or phobia. l Hard to manage patients often put off going to the dentist until the pain or dental problem can no longer be ignored l Hypnosis is used to reduce stress and induce hypnoanethesia so that less medication is used l Control can be achieved in many cases by direct suggestion or properly developed imagery, but sometimes more complex methods are required l Fears and phobias include fear of needles, fear of pain, the sound of the drill, sights, sounds and smells of a dental surgery, fear that anaesthesia won’t work, lack of control, and choking or gagging Contact me today to arrange an introductory telephone consultation or to make an appointment at the practice.
Even your children can benefit The great news is that you don’t have to suffer or dread going to the dentist anymore. Your children can also benefit from Hypnodontics so they don’t live with the inherited fear of the dentist. Hypnosis can assist in: l Elimination or reduction of tension, anxiety or fear of pain and related discomfort l Accustoming the patient to orthodontic or prosthetic appliances l Reduction of anaesthesia or analgesia during dental procedures and the elimination of the side effects they cause l Control of salivary flow and bleeding l Prevention of gagging and nausea Email now for your FREE half hour consultation or phone Fiona Vitel on 07599555892 or have a look at the website www.fionavitelhypnotherapy.com

Golden Years
Memories of 50 Years Ago by Ted Bruning And that’s why we had decimalisation.
British, and born in the 1950s or earlier? Congratulations! You’re a genius at mental arithmetic! There are no studies, surveys or statistics to prove this, but it stands to reason: you needed a brain from IBM just to work out your change! Here’s a simple test for anyone under 50. On Friday you go out with £1.17.4. You buy a pint of mild for Alf at 1s 2d, a bottle of sweet stout for Alf’s missus Mabel (no white wine for the ladies in those days!) at 10 and 1/2d, a pint of bitter for yourself at 1s 5d, a packet of crisps at 3d, and a dark rum for old Harry at 1s 8d. Later, it’s your round again – same again but no crisps, and Harry has a double (which he never does when it’s his round!). Later still the fish man comes and you have a poke of shrimps, 4d; then you give the lass from the Sally Army 2d for a War Cry which you never actually read. At chucking out time you buy a bottle of Guinness to take home, 1s 9d (1d back on the bottle). So: have you got enough left over to see Rovers at home tomorrow and buy a pie and a Bovril at the ground? Page 16
People think, wrongly, that Britain got decimalised on April 15th 1971, or D-Day as the press dubbed it. The real D-Day was March 1st 1966 when the Chancellor, Jim Callaghan, officially announced that the Government had accepted the report of a committee of enquiry (now more than two years old) and that a currency that was, in essence, more than 1,200 years old would be scrapped in five years’ time. The announcement marked the end of a long, slow march towards decimalisation. When the Decimal Association was founded in 1841 many people saw it as another manifestation of that extreme rationalism that demanded a 13-month year and one universal language. But it at least succeeded in getting a new coin minted from 1849 onwards: the florin, worth two shillings – or 10 to the pound! The florin, though, failed to our perception of the pound and shilling as the base units of currency. We were used to working with bases 12 and 20, and that’s why Britain was so good at arithmetic. (The above example is simple subtraction: imagine you were a wages clerk making up weekly pay-packets for 100-odd workers all of whom worked different hours at different rates!) Another reason why the old money had to go was that it was so damned BIG! Have you ever seen it? You needed a gusset sewn into your change pocket or all those farthings, halfpennies,
cartwheel pennies, 12-sided threepenny bits, tanners, bobs, florins and half-crowns would wear a hole in it in days. Still, there was a lot of resistance; and only when South Africa and Australia took the lead did Harold McMillan authorise the committee of enquiry in 1961. Once Mr Callaghan had made the formal announcement, though, things moved fast. The Decimal Coinage Act and the Decimal Currency Board came in 1969 along with the 50p piece. The new 5p and 10p came in 1970 and were the same size as the shilling and florin they eventually replaced. The only real change on D-Day itself was the introduction of the new 1/2p, 1p and 2p, although even then the old coppers remained in circulation until August. Was it worth it? A lot of old folk got fooled into thinking that 6p was the same as 6d when of course it was closer to 1s 2 and 1/2d; but my 23-year-old daughter is astonished and appalled that we put up with a system that mixed not only base 12 and base 20 but also fractions of the basic unit for so long. Still, we were brilliant at mental arithmetic!
Happy 50tH BirtHdays to Alan Davies (6th), Nigel Clough (19th), and Michael Imperioli (26th) Cake and botox to you all!

How We Beat the Favourite As Cheltenham's worldfamous Gold Cup meeting approaches I have chosen for this month's article a story which links the town, Cleeve Hill and Prestbury to the other side of the world. In 1847 a fourteen-year-old boy watched in excitement as horses and riders in Cheltenham's Grand Annual steeplechase flew past him through the fields on the lower slopes of Cleeve Hill around Prestbury. According to David Elder's well-researched book Literary Cheltenham, five years later the boy was himself riding. That boy was Adam Lindsay Gordon who became known as Australia's national poet. One of his most popular poems How We Beat the Favourite describes an imaginary race which seems to have been based on that early experience on the edge of Cheltenham in 1847. What is the story behind the poem? Although How We Beat the
Favourite only appeared in 1870 in Australia, it contains enough clues for us to relate it to the steeplechasing around Cheltenham. A clue lies in the first line: 'Aye squire', said Stevens, 'they back him at evens; The race is all over, bar shouting, they say; The Clown ought to beat her; Dick Neville is sweeter Than ever - he swears he can win all the way.' In all likelihood the reference was to George Stevens who lived on Cleeve Hill and who still remains the only jockey to have won five Grand Nationals. Was it also coincidence that the poet's main rival The Clown was the name of Stevens' hacking horse from which he fell to his death in Southam in 1871? Adam Lindsay Gordon clearly intended his race to be set in England, referring to racing at Warwick and Aintree with Abdelkadir, the first horse to
have won the Aintree Grand National in consecutive years, 1850-51, named as a competitor in the chase. The poem gallops along at the breakneck speed of an actual race. As it progresses, most of the competitors fall by the wayside: The fourth fence, a wattle, floor'd Monk and Blue-bottle, The Drag came to grief at the blackthorn and ditch, The rails toppled over Redoubt and Red Rover, The lane stopped Lycurgus and Leicestershire Witch. She passed like an arrow Kildare and Cock Sparrow, And Mantrap and Mermaid refused the stone wall; And Giles on the Greyling came down at the paling, And I was left sailing, in front of them all. Finally his mount Iseult is left to race neck and neck with The Clown: A short prayer from Neville just reach'd me, 'The Devil,' He mutter'd - lock'd level the hurdles we flew. At the post it appears a dead heat but poetic licence creates a favourable conclusion; Aye! So ends the tussle – I knew the tan muzzle Was first though the ring men were yelling, Dead heat!' A nose I could swear by, but Clark said, 'The mare by A short head.' And that's how the favourite was beat.
Walkers climb above Prestbury where the horses once raced Page 18
As many poets before and after him, Adam was a troubled soul. A restless school boy, he had two short spells in Cheltenham College. Aged

nineteen he stole a horse so he could compete in the Berkeley Hunt Cup. Was this the main reason his father offered to finance his emigration to Australia in August 1853 at the age of twenty? On the day of his departure he offered to give up this promise of a new life when he proposed to an unsuspecting seventeen year old, Jane Bridges. Not surprisingly she refused! Arriving in Australia he failed as a mounted policeman, a horse breaker and even a Member of Parliament in South Australia. It was steeplechasing and poetry that brought him fame. But steeplechasing was dangerous and in 1868 and 1870 he suffered head injuries from heavy falls.
As a schoolboy Adam Lindsay Gordon lived for a short time in the house with the blue door in Priory Street in Cheltenham. A plaque by the door records this
These seem to have aggravated his tendency to bouts of depression and the final straw came when he felt he had no money to pay his publisher for the book of poems which included How We Beat the Favourite. The day after it was published, on 24th of June 1870 he walked out of his house and shot himself. Sadly it was only later that he came to be honoured as Australia's national poet. - by David Aldred

Vertical Cover With Climbers by Pippa Greenwood If the boundaries of your garden are uninteresting or drab, then it is time to think about some vertical gardening. Upright surfaces are itching to be clothed in glorious climbers or wall shrubs, and if you have several vertical sites then so much the better. A visit to your local garden centre will reveal a plentiful supply of suitable plants. Start by looking at the surface you have, the size, the direction it faces and the amount of sun or shade the plants growing on the wall or fence are likely to receive. Soil type is important as the plant you choose must be suited to the site. Some climbers are quite quick growing and will look good later this year, and improve as the years pass. Many provide strong colour and others will be a useful backdrop for the garden as a whole. Most buildings can have climbers grown against them, so if you have an unsightly shed, garage or even a fairly uninteresting looking back to your house, then consider erecting some sort of support system on which to grow your climbers. Break up the monotony of a long stretch of wall with a range of different plants, and make a tall, narrow building seem broader by only allowing them Page 20
to reach the height of the first floor. A climbing hydrangea, Hydrangea petiolaris, or selfclinging plants such as ivies are ideal, but make sure the mortar on your wall is in good shape before planting. Climbers are best planted in open ground as they tend to have sizeable root systems. If grown in containers you must re-pot regularly and ultimately plan to use a big container such as a half barrel. Use a loam-based potting compost and add extra grit for drainage, and place a deep layer of crocks at the base of the container. Add controlled release fertilizer granules to the compost, to ensure that plants get adequately fed for the first few months. A triangular or Vshaped trellis panel at the back will give initial support for the plant to climb up before moving on to your wall or fence. Tie the top section of the trellis into the wall or fence, so that it does not rock about. For ground planting, dig a large hole at least 18 inches (45 cm) from the wall or fence and incorporate plenty of compost or well rotted manure. Soak the plant’s root ball and place in the hole, ideally at a 45 degree angle so that it leans towards the wall, then spread out the roots and plant. If your climber
came already attached to bamboo canes, untie the stems from any central stake and train the best looking shoots towards your new support system, using the bamboo canes to help it on its way. Keep climbers well watered, particularly if they are on or near a sunny wall. Any good garden centre will have a range of plants, but here are some suggestions: Vigorous climbers for a quick effect: Actinidia chinensis; Akebia quinata; Clematis montana; Clematis montana ‘Rubens’; Vitis coignetiae Climbers for clay soils: Campsis; Celastrus scandens; Clematis; Ivies; Golden hop; Climbing hydrangea; Honeysuckles (most); Vitis coignetiae Climbers for an alkaline or chalky soil: Actinidia kolomikta; Akebia quinata; Clematis; Ivies; Climbing hydrangea; Jasminum officinale; Honeysuckles; Trachelospermum jasminoides Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

Winchcombe Playgroup loves new outdoor canopy Children and staff at Winchcombe Playgroup are jumping for joy with their custom-made outdoor canopy, which has been installed following years of fundraising and a grant of £4,000 from Gloucestershire County Council’s Active Together Fund. The charity-run Ofsted-outstanding playgroup, which provides early years care and learning for 100 children in and around Winchcombe, encourages children to get outside and be active whatever the weather. But with rain very often spoiling play the parent run committee identified an outdoor canopy would make a big difference to staff and children, so they started fundraising. Over a period of three years the playgroup held Easter egg hunts, Christmas raffles and quiz nights, and last year their efforts were boosted with a £1,000 award from the Lloyds Bank Community Fund for the North Cotswolds and £4,000 from Gloucestershire County Council’s Active Together Fund to make the £40,000 canopy a reality. Measuring 17 meters by 6 meters with bespoke child-friendly matting, the
outdoor canopy has transformed the upper playgroup into an all-weather outdoor space. It is now a regular hive of activity with movement and music sessions, chalk marking and outdoor painting taking place - whatever the weather. Arno Ferreira, Winchcombe Playgroup Manager said, “The canopy has made such a difference to everyone here and it has created a really amazing space for us. We want to encourage our children to get outside and be active at every opportunity, and they can happily do this now no matter what the British weather throws at us. “On behalf of all the staff, children and parents we would like to thank all the organisations, businesses and individuals who have donated their time, money and expertise to get this canopy off the ground.” Cllr Roger Wilson, Gloucestershire County Councillor for Winchcombe said, "I am delighted to have been able to help the Winchcombe Playgroup raise funds for their new canopy. This is exactly the type of project that
has made the Active Together fund so worthwhile, encouraging young children to get active by playing outside." Cllr Andrew Gravells, cabinet member for public health at Gloucestershire County Council said, "What a great idea the parents have had to make sure rain doesn’t stop play at Winchcombe playgroup. I’m so pleased that Active Together funding has helped to make the new outdoor canopy happen. We’ve been supporting community groups all over the county with our Active Together funding." Lowenna Clemmens, 3, said, ‘I love dancing outside on the bouncy floor and listening to the rain on the roof.’ Winchcombe Playgroup is an Outstanding Ofsted rated community playgroup based playgroup in a purposefully renovated building in the heart of Winchcombe. A community playgroup is a non-profit making organisation that is run by a volunteer committee of parents whose children attend playgroup. For more information on the playgroup visit www.winchcombeplaygroup.org. uk or call 01242 603613.

Gotta Get A Witness Iain Betson conducts enquires into a useful new website
Come-on, ‘fess up. I know it’s happened to you because it’s happened to me. How many times have you seen, or been the victim of, down-right dangerous driving by another and wished that a policemen had also seen what you had experienced and nabbed the perpetrator? Well now your wish can come true. It takes a little forethought and effort on your part, but if it helps to get numpty drivers and, frankly, those who seem to have little regard for human life when driving off the road and given their just desserts, then I think it’s time and money well spent. The use of the dash-board mounted camera is comparatively recent in the UK, although it is rising. This is in contrast to Russia, where, judging from the hours of Youtube dash-cam uploads, its use seems universal. Your own insurance protection Fitting one to your car is quite simple
Page 24
and reasonably inexpensive to do, certainly when you consider that the material it captures could save you a fortune in insurance. But what do you do with that footage if you do record bad, dangerous or illegal driving? You could contact the police directly and show them the evidence, but your camera may not have recorded enough material for charges to be brought. Alternatively, you could consider submitting it to the PoliceWitness.com website. The aim of the site is to highlight dangerous driving and that those responsible are now having their actions recorded. They also act as a conduit to the police and insurance companies when claims or charges are brought. You may not have been the only one recording an incident, so the site can act as a collection point for other footage of the same incident, thereby increasing the chances of a prosecution. An additional incentive for getting a dash-cam is that, to help insurance companies prove liability, they may also pay for your footage, meaning it could pay for itself.

Should You Be Wary Of Wheat?
If you suffer from bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach cramps or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), maybe you should be. However, ALWAYS see your GP (rather than self-diagnosing) if these symptoms are severe and persistent, especially if you have blood in your stools, vomiting, excessive bloating or very painful stomach cramps - it may indicate more serious medical conditions. Wheat allergy, wheat sensitivity/ intolerance and Coeliac disease are often confused, so let’s get them straight. WheAt ALLerGY If you are truly wheat allergic, eating wheat will rapidly provoke allergy symptoms such as itching, rashes, sneezing and wheezing. You’ll need to avoid wheat in any form and see your GP. CoeLiAC DiSeASe Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects around 1% of people in the UK and often goes undiagnosed. In Coeliac sufferers, the intestinal lining becomes damaged because it can’t absorb gluten, a protein found in foods including wheat, barley and rye. Tiredness, hair loss, mouth ulcers,
anaemia and unexpected weight loss, alongside gastrointestinal symptoms, can indicate Coeliac disease. Diagnosis is by a blood test and biopsy. Both tests are only accurate if you’re still eating gluten, so you’ll need to continue eating gluten until the tests are complete. If Coeliac disease is diagnosed, you must avoid gluten permanently. WheAt intoLerAnCe/ SenSitivitY Wheat intolerance or sensitivity is much more common than wheat allergy. Symptoms can develop some hours after eating wheat, which can make the condition hard to pinpoint, and it’s not something your GP can test for. Try eliminating wheat for four weeks to see if your symptoms improve (ensuring you replace it with healthy alternatives like rice, corn, buckwheat pasta and quinoa). Remember that wheat is in most breads, cakes, pastas, pastries, cereals, couscous, biscuits, beer, soy sauce and hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), and is a hidden ingredient in many other products. Keep a food diary in case another food type, such as dairy, is the culprit – but don’t eliminate whole food groups long-term without consulting your GP. Reintroduce wheat slowly (preferably starting with 100% wheat products). If your symptoms reappear, it’s a good indication that you have wheat sensitivity; trial and error will tell you whether you’re sensitive to all wheat products or just some. This can depend on the process
the wheat has undergone; some people can tolerate toast and pasta better than bread, because the heating process makes the wheat more digestible. Supermarket bread may be less digestible than traditional bakery bread, as supermarkets use an accelerated bread-making process. irritAbLe boWeL SYnDrome (ibS) If your symptoms don’t seem specifically tied to wheat, you may have IBS. While the causes are not entirely clear, stress, illness, high-fat or highfibre foods seem to precipitate attacks, making bowel function erratic and causing gastrointestinal symptoms. Probiotic supplements or foods can help, as can medication prescribed by your GP. tackling Wheat Sensitivity and ibS: the FoDmAP diet Designed originally for people with (IBS), the wheat-free low-FODMAP diet eliminates Fermentable oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, monosaccharides And Polyols - types of carbohydrates that aren’t easily digested and may cause bacterial growth, leading to diarrhoea and bloating. The FODMAP diet should be followed under a dietician’s guidance to ensure you stay healthy and follow it correctly, as it’s quite complex. Your GP can give you a referral. information and Support: Coeliac UK: Helpline 0333 332 2033 www.coeliac.org.uk The IBS Network: 0114 272 32 53 www.theibsnetwork.org Allergy UK (also has information on intolerances): 01322 619898 www.allergyuk.org

Daniel Tingle & Craig Hamill running the London Marathon
Daniel's Story
Craig's Story
On April 24th 2016 I'm going to be taking part in Virgin London Marathon.
On the 24th April 2016 I will be running the Virgin London Marathon for the 3rd time (at the grand old age of 41) in aid of Coeliac UK, a charity close to my heart as my 6 year old daughter Isabelle has Coeliac Disease.
I wanted to raise money for a charity that were fantastic in supporting for my son and the whole family - Action Medical Research. In March 2014 my son Ethan who at the time was aged 8 suffered a Stroke. At the Time we were in complete shock really because we always believed a stroke is what an Adult would suffer with. Ethan had to have various scans and tests and lots of back and forth to Hospital for meetings with Consultants. We were then warned that Ethan could suffer a further episode and sure enough he suffered a second stroke under four weeks after the first stroke. Following the second episode we had to attend Bristol Hospital to see Neurologist's. There first initial thoughts were that Ethan had a defective nerve in his Brain, this turned out not to be the cause of Ethan's medical problems. So the doctors decided to look into Ethan's Heart. We had two Consultations with the heart Professor and his decision was to carry out a Bubble Study test to insure there wasn't an underlying Heart problem. This proved to be the cause because they found a block on the left side of Ethan's heart. Ethan has made a full recovery now and just has to have medication every night indefinitely. This was an extremely tuff time for Ethan and the whole family. From that moment onwards we were determined to raise as much awareness that Strokes do happen in young children not just Adults. I really do appreciate you reading my story and hopefully tell people about our story to spread awareness of Childhood Strokes. The Reason why I decided to raise money for Action Medical Research is because there are many unexplained child illness's and without there support, research and time a diagnosis would be harder to find. If you are able to help me reach my target it would be fantastic and I really would appreciate your support www.justgiving.com/Daniel-Tingle1 Page 32
Isabelle was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in June 2015. This is a lifelong autoimmune disease where she suffers from an adverse reaction to gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye. Her immune system can mistakenly attack healthy tissue and damages the surface of the small intestines, disrupting her body’s ability to absorb nutrients from food. Typical symptoms range from diarrhoea and sickness, in particular, Isabelle suffers physically and emotionally, mainly with joint, leg and stomach pain, as well as anemia and fatigue. It took nearly 1 year to get Isabelle diagnosed and after several blood tests, appointments and a biopsy, her diagnosis was a relief, although met with sadness too. We have had to make many changes to her diet, which has not been easy, due to her having to try many new foods. It is particularly tricky when eating out or attending friends’ parties, as many cafes, restaurants and venues still do not cater for people with Coeliac disease. My mother in law also has Coeliac disease, as do a small number of children at Isabelle’s school, so I am on a mission to raise lots of awareness and undertake lots of fundraising events such as a Charity Race Night, Gluten Free Cake Sale, Holding an Allergy Awareness School Assembly (at Bishop's Cleeve Primary Academy), Raffle, Leg Waxing, Selling Sweets and Car Washing. Coeliac UK have been a great support to us as a family and are also a great charity who campaign for better access to diagnosis, care and better access to food in/out of the home. Coeliac UK also research the nature of the disease and potential cures and provide expert and independent information, to help people manage their health and diet.
I appreciate your time in reading our story and if you want to help us achieve our target of £2500 then you can make a Justgiving donation (www.justgiving.com/ Craig-Hamill1). Isabelle and I would really appreciate your support.

Home & Interiors Make The Most Of A Small Kitchen
Tiny kitchen spaces are often extremely efficient – you can wash, slice and cook almost without moving at all. And you can create a practical and attractive galley kitchen for very little money, writes Katherine Sorrell. PLANNING THE ROOM In a small kitchen every centimetre counts, and the first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but it should also be easy to move between each one. Ensure this by drawing a floor plan with lines connecting each point on the triangle, and avoid placing obstructions between them. In theory the most efficient length for each side of the triangle is about two metres, but in practice the three work centres should not be uncomfortably close or too far apart. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge opposite. You can’t create a triangle in a single galley, but its linear shape makes it easy to use as long as the line is Page 34
not too long. Aim for tall cupboards at one end, then the hob, and the maximum amount of worktop between the hob and the sink, with the dishwasher next to the sink at the other end. Add a rubbish bin under the sink and, if you have room, a pull-out larder. EATING AND ENTERTAINING It’s always a good idea to fit in somewhere to eat and drink – perhaps a fold-down table, or a small dining table which extends for extra guests. Or, add a breakfast bar by forming an ‘L’ shape at the end of a worktop and tuck a couple of high stools underneath it. CHOOSING UNITS & WORKTOPS The trend is for mixing textures and colours in the kitchen, including metallics, marble and rough, tough industrial accents. Deep worktops and open shelving will update any sized kitchen but quality matters most. Cheaper carcasses are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs, which is fine for a budget option. But for a well-used, long-lasting kitchen, opt for plywood or MDF veneer, the thicker the better. Laminate worktops are the budget choice – choose high-pressure rather than low-pressure ones, as they’re more durable. Wooden worktops can be inexpensive, but avoid ones that are too
By Katherine Sorrell
cheap or too thin, especially next to a sink as they’ll just warp and buckle. Splashbacks are often made from the worktop material, though cheaper alternatives are ceramic tiles, tongue and groove painted with tough gloss, or a fashionable sheet of clear or coloured acrylic. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE WITH THESE IDEAS • Fit wall cupboards that go right up to the ceiling • Sliding doors are ideal as they don’t intrude into the room • ‘Magic’ corner cupboards (with mechanisms that let you access the back) let you fit more in • Wall-hung racking systems provide organisation but let you see what you’ve got • Pull-out shelving and slim drawers (e.g. in the plinth) add extra storage space • Internal fittings help organise cupboards • For appliances, choose multifunctional, compact, slimline, built-in and stacking versions • Reflective and/or transparent surfaces and pale colours make the room seem bigger • Base cabinets on legs or recessed plinths let you see more floor • Avoid visual confusion by sticking to ultra-plain cabinet fronts with either no handles or very discreet ones • Larger-than-average floor tiles make the floor seem larger Main Image:Make use of wall space, drawers, slim appliances and free-standing storage such as trolleys. Now contour around the hillside and enjoy views to the north of the wooded hills of Alderton and Dumbleton and the whale-back Bredon Hill as they come into view. Stay close to the trees, and bear left at a junction of paths to follow the Gloucestershire Way, avoiding the temptation to follow the Winchcombe Way down to your right. A couple of springs create muddy patches, made worse by animals in wet weather.
Leave Back Lane car park via the entrance into Back Lane. Turn left and follow the road past the Saxon mound on your left until you reach a road junction, the car park of the Corner Cupboard pub is on your left. Turn right and in about 50 metres turn right again into Harvey’s Lane. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Claire Brimble is a fully qualified Massage and Beauty Therapist who lives in Winchcombe where she has lived for approximately 3 years. She moved just over the hill from Woodmancote and has found Winchcombe a great place to live with everything on your doorstep. In addition she has found the residents and neighbours so friendly and helpful.
adjoining a Personal Training Centre in Montpellier, Cheltenham and have been there since.
Claire recently appeared as guest on Chris Sweet’s ‘Business Spotlight’ show on Radio Winchcombe to tell him more about her business...
Q. What is your favourite treatment that you like to carry out on clients?
Q. Is there anything else you do in your working week?
I would say facials and deep tissue back massage. With facials it is beneficial in a few ways – it relaxes the client physically and mentally. It increases circulation, drains lymph and nourishes the skin. With deep tissue massage you can sink deeper into the muscle fibres by using your body weight and using forearms, elbows and knuckles.
Well I now offer home visits which include Indian Head Massage, on site Massage, treats for feet and hand care.
Q. Can you tell me about your occupation Claire? I have been working as a therapist for approximately 14 years and trained at The Cotswold Academy of Health and Beauty in Cirencester. Q. What was your occupation before you trained in massage and beauty therapy and what drew you towards your profession as it is now? Before I trained I was a full time stay at home Mum and it was a full time job as I did all the gardening, decorating and more... Before I had children, I was a PA and then a Legal Secretary at a local building company – Robert Hitchins Builders. I left school at 16 and started work as an office junior at Lex Mead Motors. When my eldest reached about 13 I thought it was time to get my brain stimulated and decided to train in a skill that involved people. I considered a dental nurse but finally decided body massage was what I wanted to do. Q. Where was your first job as a therapist? My first role was at the Cheltenham Park Hotel, then I worked in a beauty salon until I eventually decided to set up my own business. I worked at a hairdressers for a while but the environment was far from ideal so I found a holistic centre from where I could work. This was ideal but unfortunately the rent just kept rising so almost all the therapists left. I was very fortunate to find a room Page 38
Q. What treatments do you offer from your treatment room? I offer a wide variety of holistic therapies including Indian Head Massage, Thai Foot, Hot Stone and Deep Tissue. In addition I offer Decleor facials and beauty treatments.
Q. Where do your clients come from i.e. how did you build up a client base? I built up a client base at the holistic centre I worked at and am pleased to say a large majority followed me when I moved. The rest are through word of mouth. Some of my clients have been coming to me for 10 years or more so we build up quite a rapport. When they are with me everything is confidential so they can feel totally at ease. Q. You say you are part time. What else do you do to fill your week? Well I also teach massage and I am registered with a training school who send individuals or very small groups to me to be trained. One morning a week I do voluntary work at the Winchcombe Day Care Centre where I offer hand care and massage and occasionally foot treatments. This I find extremely rewarding. I have also been very fortunate to be included in some of the training courses, I recently attended a two day course on dementia which I feel was invaluable.
Q. Why have you decided to offer home visits? Being a volunteer at the Day Care Centre made me more aware of folk who are less mobile and therefore not able to visit salons or therapists. Q. What are the benefits of these treatments? The benefits include improved circulation which increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the area you are working on. In addition it helps the flow of lymph as when you are less mobile you can get a build up of lymph fluid which may cause swelling or puffiness. The massage can also alleviate aches and pains and help with mobility of the joints. Q. Do you ever go for treatments? Yes occasionally I treat myself. Q. Is it difficult to relax and are you quite critical? Well I think you know almost immediately if the treatment is going to be professional so if it is I am very good at relaxing and usually fall asleep! I have also had some unpleasant experiences like a full body massage on the roof of a riad in Marrakech where the therapist left me quite exposed for most of the massage which was very uncomfortable and she also took a call on her mobile and chatted away while I lay there feeling quite vulnerable.

Q. What are your thoughts on aesthetic treatments such as botox?
vegetables, fruit, and plenty of water. Avoid the sun and when you are exposed always wear no lower than an SPF 30 sun cream. Smoking is just about the worst thing for the skin as you are directly exposing it to pollutants and in turn the skin will develop broken capillaries, wrinkles and generally look dull and dehydrated. Exercise is great for improving the complexion as it increases circulation and helps you get rid of wastes through perspiring.
Well personally I wouldn’t have botox as it is something that you have to keep having done and it can become very costly. Also some people have fillers injected to plump out their face but again this has to be kept up. It can sometimes look quite obvious and occasionally can go wrong with irreversible results. Q. How would you advise people to look after their skin?
CODEWORD
Q. What is the best way for anyone interested in a treatment to contact you? They can call me on 07437 013321 or email me at clairebrimble@ hotmail.co.uk - Business Spotlight is brought to you by Christopher Sweet
Q. Do you have to be insured for each individual treatment?
Well having a good skin care routine is essential. Cleansing the face morning and night and applying a good moisturiser daily and a night cream before you go to bed. It is also very beneficial to exfoliate once a week to remove dead skin cells. Regular facials say every 4 - 6 weeks to give the skin a boost are extremely effective... But it’s not just about what is applied to the skin - You need a healthy diet with plenty of oily fish, fresh

Aid which is naturally a reassuring skill to have.
Yes, every time you qualify in a new therapy you will receive a certificate and you then have to forward this to your insurers so they can add it on to your insurance policy. As a therapist you are also required to attend workshops, talks, courses etc. I am a member of the Complementary Therapists Association who I am also insured with and in addition I am a member of the Beauty Guild. I have also just received a certificate in First

Dividend Taxation And Other Changes To Tax Laws in 2016/17 By Ann Haldon > 32.5% (for the higher rate band) > 38.1% (in the additional rate band) People with a low dividend income will see a reduction in their tax bill, but the new measures are likely to hit family-run small businesses the hardest.
A change to the dividend taxation laws is to be implemented from April 2016. Pension and ISA dividends will not be affected by the new regime and will remain free of tax, but the new dividend rules are likely to have an adverse effect on directors and shareholders of small incorporated companies. The new proposals will reportedly bring in an extra £2.54 billion in revenue for the 2016/17 tax year, with smaller amounts continuing to bolster the public purse in future years. The changes are an effort by the government to equalise tax laws for those who run unincorporated businesses.
So why has the Treasury decided to overhaul the current system? The government is attempting to discourage tax-motivated incorporation, which means setting up a business as a limited company simply to enjoy a lower rate of tax on income. In the past, directors/ shareholders of a limited company have been able to take a small salary from their business, which attracted enough tax to maintain their entitlement to the state pension. The government’s objection, however, is that company profits are then used to extract a further dividend taxed at the much lower rate of 10%.
Here’s a summary of the changes to be introduced • A maximum annual Dividend Allowance of £5,000 is to come into force (after taking the personal allowance into account) • The existing 10% notional Dividend Tax Credit will be scrapped • Dividends over the £5,000 annual limit will be taxed at the following rates: > 7.5% on dividend income in the basic rate band
Strong objections from the business community With the inherent difficulties facing small businesses, fears have been expressed that the government is making it much harder for people in business to survive financially. This includes both individual contractors who have incorporated their businesses, and family-run companies. In fact, an online petition has been started, objecting to these new rules. Company directors/ shareholders say that the
rewards of low dividend taxation compensated for the long hours and risks they took when starting their business, and that their overall contribution to the economy needs to be more widely acknowledged by the government. Are there any other changes to UK taxation in the forthcoming financial year? Other announcements made in last year’s Budget include: • Pension tax relief changes - Restrictions on pension tax relief for those with an income of £150,000 or more will come into force from April 2016. A fixed rate of 33% will apply for all in the new tax year, regardless of the rate band. • Savings interest - Said to be an acknowledgement of recent poor returns for savers, George Osborne also announced in last year’s budget that savings interest of up to £1,000 will no longer be taxed. • Digital tax accounts - The ‘account’ will be similar to online banking in that details on how much is owed will be available to view at any time, and taxpayers will be able to make payments throughout the financial year rather than meeting a specific deadline. These are all significant changes to taxation laws in the UK, and are set to bring in considerable sums for the Treasury, but the new dividend tax rules seem to be attracting the most concern and criticism. http://www.itcontracting.com/ new-dividend-tax-april-2016/

Business Spotlight Ends After two years or so of presenting business programmes on a Friday morning, Chris Sweet has decided to bring the current programme, Business Spotlight, to an end. For over a year it used to alternate with Forum Fortnightly which featured Winchcombe Business Forum members, whilst Business Spotlight featured businesses which were not associated with the Business Forum. Both programmes have provided an opportunity for people to talk about their business – what caused them to set it up, what products or services it provides, opportunities and threats facing the business, and the staff involved in supporting the enterprise. Chris’ background in working for various companies and in establishing his own businesses gave him a valuable insight into issues faced by Winchcombe businesses. The demands of Chris’ current business venture – CAFE 6 in North Street, Winchcombe – are the main reason he has had to bring Business Spotlight to an end. Chris is immediate past Chairman of Radio Winchcombe Ltd, and has always willingly given his time to help behind the scenes with the station, and I am delighted that he has offered to continue with this. I would like to record my thanks to Chris for the immense contribution he has made to Radio Winchcombe. In the meantime, the search begins for a way of bringing a regular business programme back to the station because the business community is such an important part of Winchcombe’s well-being.
Steph Cater Returns! Radio Ramblings is a show presented by Steph Cater. It used to be live on air Saturdays from 12-1pm late 2014/ early 2015, with a range of guests and a selection of popular music. The show also featured news stories from the previous week and special requests. Having taken a break from recording, Steph came back at the beginning of
Page 42
Whilst the programme is now a solo affair, Steph retains the inclusion of relevant news stories but focuses on music from the 1950/1960s era, which she has grown to love having lived with her grandparents for an extended period of time. The show now goes out Tuesdays 3-4pm and Sundays 2-3pm as an afternoon full of Rock and Roll fun! In her spare time, Steph likes to browse vinyl collections in charity shops and writes a sonnet a day to keep herself busy. She is open to music from all walks of life, and is eager to expose herself to numerous genres, so if you have any listening suggestions then she would love to hear from you! Prior to joining Radio Winchcombe she had had no experience in broadcasting, but had always been interested in learning more. Joining John Oldham on Saturdays, Steph built up her knowledge until she was confident enough to do it alone. Though a self-proclaimed perfectionist, Steph records her shows live as she likes the buzz that comes from performing to an immediate audience. If you have any need to contact Steph, do so through the usual lines and she will do her best to accommodate your liaisons. She looks forward to hearing from you!
New Presenter – Tom Arkell Living in the Cotswolds for most of Tom’s life, music has been a passion for a very long time and being a teenager through the Brit Pop era he was a huge fan of the likes of Blur, Shed 7, Ash and lots more! In more recent times, thanks to the likes of Mumford and Sons among others, he has started listening to a lot more folk which is bizarre considering he used to leave the room when his father put on "Folk On 2" in his youth! His work life is his other passion where he is involved in helping and promoting local businesses. He runs a Cotswolds
social media agency, T20 Media, near Stow on the Wold which is also where The Cotswolds Gentleman blog that he writes was created. The blog gets around 2,000 readers per week and promotes lifestyle, culture and fashion in the area. Tom has now joined Radio Winchcombe where he presents a lifestyle programme 3-4pm on Wednesdays promoting great local music, businesses and people! And in case anyone was wondering – Tom is not related to Philip Arkell, founding member of Radio Winchcombe!
Short Story Competition Last year Mary Vincent-Coulter (who co-presents Thursday Breakfast) organised a Short Story Competition with Winchcombe Abbey School which was a great success. This year there are three Schools joining in: Winchcombe Abbey Church of England Primary School, the joint Schools at Alderton and Dumbleton, known as Oakhill St Mary’s Junior, and the Infant School at Prestbury. Mary has invited all of the children to submit stories on the theme of MAGIC, and the titles given were as follows: The Magic Toyshop, The Magic Book of Funny Spells, and The Naughty Magic Wand. The children seemed to relish the idea, and were very excited and enthusiastic, particularly when the Naughty Magic Wand responded to a special command of ‘Hocus Pocus’ and turned their teacher into a Very Tall White Rabbit! ‘How cool is that on a rainy, wintery day at School! Mary is so looking forward to reading the children’s own magic stories, and all those who achieve First Place in each age group at each school, will have their stories recorded for a programme to be played on Radio Winchcombe. In addition, there will be a special Certificate presented for First Place and Runner Up, in each age group, at each school. There will also be a visit to the Radio Winchcombe Studio to join in a Live Broadcast, as part of the Prize. This was a terrific success last year, and enjoyed equally by the accompanying adults. Mary has requested that all entries are submitted by the Monday before Easter - 21st March - ready for her to collect.

We need to raise approximately £1,000 each year through events such as an annual Fashion Show, a disco, a curry evening etc. An important fund raising aspect of these events is a raffle and we do need prizes to give away. Whilst we approach local businesses and they have been very generous in the past we do need more prizes and therefore I’m asking volunteers and members of Radio Winchcombe, and members of the public, to pledge an item that we can include in future raffles.
All you need to do is email your pledge to the email address below, and I will arrange collection. Many thanks in advance for any support you can give us.

Chicken in Red Wine Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes This is a quick, easy and flavoursome way to serve chicken. Use a full-bodied red wine such as a Burgundy for the best flavour, although there is no need to buy a really pricy one!
Ingredients: • 2 tbsp olive oil • 600g skinless chicken breast fillets, cut into chunks • 225g button mushrooms • 200g shallots, peeled • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 300ml red wine • 200ml chicken or vegetable stock • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 1 bay leaf • 2tbsp cornflour • Sprigs of fresh parsley to garnish • Sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans, to serve
TIP
This dish freezes well, so it’s worth doubling up the quantities to freeze away half for another day. Allow to cool completely then spoon into a shallow freezer-proof container and freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat in a flameproof casserole until piping hot. Page 44
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chicken chunks and fry for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently until golden brown all over. Transfer to a plate with a slotted spoon. Add the button mushrooms and shallots to the pan and fry for 5 minutes until just beginning to brown. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute then return the chicken to the pan and stir in the red wine, stock, tomato puree and bay leaf. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer gently for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken and onions are tender. Blend the cornflour and 2 tbsp water to a smooth paste then stir the paste into the pan. Simmer gently for further 2-3 minutes, stirring all the time, until the liquid has thickened. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans and garnish with parsley sprigs.
