Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people

Dear Reader, Welcome to the October issue of your local community magazine. As you can see, it is packed full with local events happening in and around the area. This is a fantastic feature, especially as we have another half term holiday to look forward to at the end of the month. Also, with Halloween just around the corner, it’s a time of great excitement for children and adults alike. The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has a large variety of events running in October, starting with the Autumn Diesel weekend on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th October, followed by the Cotswold Food & Drink Fayre running on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd October, which will be hosting a large selection of Artisan food and drink produced around the region. To wrap up the month, they are holding a Halloween Steam & Scream Special on Saturday 28th October. This spooky spectacular will be running throughout the day at either Cheltenham Racecourse or Toddington Station so why not dress up for the occasion and see who you can scare along the way! For more information on any of these events, please visit www.gwsr.com. If you would like to add an upcoming event to the “What’s on” section in the magazine, please email us at office@glosdirectories.co.uk and we will be happy to share the event for you. Also, just a thank you to all our readers who support the local businesses within our magazine. If you have a local business and would like to be included in our magazine in November, please call or email us for more information. If you have never had an advert before, that’s no problem, we have an in-house design service and we’ll create your advert for you! Hope you have a great month and see you back here in November! Best wishes,

Vicky Muller

Autumn Fayre raises £6,500 for hospice for the hospice thanks to the generosity of local people. Elise Hoadley, Director of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, which over the past three years has helped raise a staggering £21,000 for our hospice.” Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s Autumn Fayre on Saturday 9th September raised over £6,500 for the charity, which could pay for over 4 00 hours of specialist hospice care. Despite the wet weather conditions, local people and families donned their wellies and waterproofs to take to the grounds of the hospice’s Grade II* listed Cotswold manor house for a day of fun, food, live music and entertainment, all officially opened by the Mayor of Cheltenham, Councillor Klara Sudbury. As is tradition, Gloucestershire Morris Dancers and guests gave a special performance to close the fayre, rounding off a day of performances throughout Cheltenham where they collected over £1,000

“Despite the wet weather it was great to see local families enjoying time together in our hospice grounds, helping raise much-needed funds for our care. We received help from so many people including our fabulous volunteers from the hospice, corporate volunteers who helped get everything in place and friends and volunteers from local groups too.” “Moben Marquees made sure we had some much-needed undercover areas on the day, and our friends at Creed Food Services supplied us with some tasty sausages and burgers for the ever popular BBQ. Our Autumn Fayre is our flagship community fundraising event when we throw open our doors to local people and their families and we are always so touched by the amazing support we receive.”

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Brrr! You can tell the seasons are changing. Recently I’ve been dodging high winds, freezing temperatures and so much rain it nearly washed away my stripes! We will have to dig out the woolly jumpers before too long as, with the clocks going back at the end of the month, Winter will soon be upon us...

Wishing you lots of Halloween fun,

It also offers family and bereavement support, rehabilitation, complementary therapies, spiritual care and befriending.

Well We All Knew That Didn’t We? (But it’s Worth Confirming it in an Official Survey) Apologies in advance to any white-van men reading this, especially if you are one of the 3% of the careful ones: in a TomTom survey of 1,000 UK consumers, 97% of the respondents put whitevan man bottom of the list of the safest and most careful road users. The rest of us shouldn’t nod with an “I told you so” smugness either. Drivers of what the survey describes as “high performance” cars (read three popular highend German marques) only scored 1% higher, followed by taxi and truck drivers on a joint 8%. Personally, why, with such a low score on driving skill, any of us get in a taxi is beyond me.

Using an analogy, if you want any job done well, you get the professionals in. They have the tools, training, skills and experience to produce good work. So you’d think a “professional” driver, such as one behind the wheel of a taxi would have the same? From the results of the survey it seems not. On the flip side, if you drive a small car you came out tops on the safety and courtesy scores with a 27% rating. Saloon car drivers were only marginally less safe and rude, coming in at 23%. This slap on the back isn’t confined to the size of vehicle you drive either, as next were bus drivers at 17%. So, in any future survey, if you want to score highly for your driving skill and politeness, it seems you should steer clear of driving a white German-built taxi van and opt for a small saloontype bus instead. Safe and polite motoring!

Cake and Bake Chocolate and Orange Puddings Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream.

Ingredients: • 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, sifted • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice • 2 tsp orange zest • Custard or cream, to serve

Makes 6 Ready in 1 hours 30 mins

TIP

You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 30-45 seconds. Page 12

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

visit in England. And he has been listening to Bev and Ros’ “Drive Time” show ever since.

Our local radio station is popular worldwide! A man from California has paid a visit to his favourite radio station – all the way over here in Gloucestershire.

In mid-September, Wayne decided to incorporate Winchcombe into his travels and stopped by the radio station with his wife Louise to pay the two presenters a visit and put faces to the names. Wayne said: “We had this trip already scheduled, and were able to work a visit to the studio into our plans. Being on the show was fantastic, it was just like sitting and having a good conversation, and it was over way too soon.” And while Wayne was on the air, around 10 of his friends were listening in from home 5,364 miles away in Los Angeles and in Seattle where he is from originally. Beverly Harrell, who co-hosts the show with Dr Ros Martin, said: “We think it’s lovely that he’s such a big fan, and we have an ongoing joke on the show where we pretend we’re in California if it’s really bad weather.

The Radio Winchcombe Team with Wayne and his wife Wayne Hagler, who works in health and life insurance sales, has been listening to Radio Winchcombe for the past two years. He lives in Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles away from LA, and first discovered the Winchcombe station when he was researching new areas to

"He emails in and says he’s listening and tells us the temperature there that day.

"When he said he was coming to Britain, we thought it was fantastic. It has given a new dimension to our show.” You can listen in to the show Fridays and Saturdays between 4.00pm and 6.00pm. The presenters who will receive the training are Maxine Nelmes, Jane Stovell and Charles Dewhurst, who was featured in September’s issue.

Computer Corner

Lottery Technology For the last few months, I’ve been writing about the gadgets and gizmos that can make our lives easier in various ways. This time, I’d like to do what we all should do from time to time – dream a little! Let’s put aside the budget constraints and any sense of what we should be saving up for and imagine what we’d splash the cash on if a lottery win came in. Oh, and if you’re the lucky one who does pick up the lucky card at Budgens, you can just treat this as my Santa list should you be feeling generous.

To start with, let’s look at the very best computer you can buy. These days, with Apple products all being rather expensive, it’s not actually an easy task to pick just one. It depends if design or power is your definition of ‘best’. For me, the ideal combination is actually a Windows machine and probably the Alienware 17. For your £2499.00 you’re getting extreme power via the Intel i7 processor and for design, you get what I can only describe as an on-board disco that can generate 80 quadrillion unique light-themes on the box itself. Once you’ve got the ultimate computer, it’s time to seek out some smaller tech to spend your winnings with. For the most technically advanced smart watch, you’d be heading back to Apple; but for me,

Page 16

the best device is actually the Breitling Exospace B55. This amazing timepiece combines an exclusive SuperQuartz™ movement with clever tech designed for pilots. If nothing else, it’s the most beautiful wearable tech I’ve yet seen. Get yours online from £7,220.00 including postage.

If we’re spending the sort of money that could buy a car on a watch, we may as well upgrade our ideas for transport too. How about a Coboc One Soho? No, that’s not the address of a stag-do you once went to, it’s an electric bike. £3199.00 will get you a machine that will get you over Cleeve Hill without breaking a sweat and it looks gorgeous to boot. Not a fan of bikes, even when self-powered? Try the Tesla X, an electric car that does 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds. It’s worth £80,400 just for the doors alone, which open upward rather than out. That should make a tight spot on Gloucester Street easier to park in. Mind you, it’s £1000 more for shiny paint, which seems a bit mean. Perhaps the ultimate luxury might be something that does nothing more than entertain our ears. For those who want to hear music as it was intended, you can’t beat the Astell & Kern A&ultima SP1000. This £3299.00 box fits in your pocket but plays and stores music in high definition. Yes, audio comes in HD too as well as your TV. As for televisions, the best available

right now is probably the Sony KD55A1. I had the pleasure of a demo in London recently and the picture quality was so striking it was actually intimidating. This OLED marvel even has speakers inside the screen, making your movies boom in every way. At only £3500.00, get two.

As fun as it is, perhaps we’re being a tad mean buying all these gadgets for ourselves. How about a gift for the kids? The RazorX Cruiser is a £400 skateboard that comes with an electric engine capable of scaring the living daylights out of every pedestrian in Winchcombe. It runs for 40 minutes on each charge and the rider holds a remote control for the speed and breaks. If this sounds a bit scary for Timmy, try the largest Lego set ever released. The new Millennium Falcon set contains 7,541 pieces and is available in October for $800 (yup, you’ll have to go to the USA to buy one). Alright, that will do for today’s shopping list. Back to the normal world where I have a couple of hundred emails to reply to and a spacebar that sticks on every third strike. I guess the time will come when all this amazing tech becomes more affordable so I’ll keep on bashing at my laptop until then and let myself dream! - Alex Sass, Managing Director of PostMood.com and CEO of Hyperworld Control Ltd. Home & Interiors Designing A Dressing Room

Many of us yearn for the luxury of a dressing room, a dedicated place in which to store clothes, leaving the bedroom as a comfortable, tranquil place, uncluttered by bulky wardrobes and chests of drawers. When space allows, this could be an immensely useful, functional space, with clothes storage, a dressing table, seating and plenty of mirrors. When space is restricted, it may be more efficient to turn a small room, part of a landing or one end of a bathroom or the master bedroom into a dressing area packed with carefully designed storage. How big should a dressing room be? It’s best to measure everything that you’re planning to put in the room, then draw up

plans and elevations of where and how they’ll fit. Most people opt for a combination of hanging space and drawers. Think of rails for full, half and three-quarter-length hanging, deep, shallow and compartmentalised drawers, and useful fittings such as tie holders, pull-out shelves, boxes, trouser hangers and laundry bins. The hard-toreach top parts of the space are ideal for infrequently used items, and shoes can be kept in racks or on trees at the bottom. To create a full-on dressing room, leave enough space for a dressing table with a good mirror and drawers for cosmetics, hair styling kit and so on. A full-length mirror is essential, and for drying hair you’ll need a plug socket nearby. There are three ways to fit out the space: find a carpenter or joiner to make you an utterly bespoke room; commission a fitted-furniture specialist; or use off-the-shelf elements from DIY sheds or storage specialists

By Katherine Sorrell

and make it up yourself. The latter option is cheapest but less flexible, and may not make the best use of your space. It is important to get the lighting right in a dressing room. If wall fittings, dangling pendants or floor lamps are in the way, inset ceiling spotlights are best. Fit enough to ensure the room is brightly lit, particularly if your finishes are dark. If clothes are screened off with doors, fit sensor-operated lights that switch on when you open the doors. While the organisation of storage is essentially utilitarian, there is always an element of aesthetics, too. Even plain, open-fronted storage comes in a choice of finishes, while bespoke versions could incorporate exotic woods, leather or wicker. Ideally, match the style of the dressing room and bedroom, picking out colours, finishes and details such as drawer handles and light switches, to seamlessly blend the rooms together.

Creating a dressing room area in a bedroom If you don’t have space for a dedicated dressing room, consider sectioning off one end of the bedroom instead. Use a curtain or screen to separate the spaces or build a false wall to act as a headboard and, on the other side, a wardrobe. Make the wall as high as the hanging space needed for your longest clothes, but stop it short of the ceiling to increase the sense of space and light in the room. As with any space-saving storage requirements, ensure that any fitted furniture makes use of the full height and width available, and look for clever fittings such as corner carousels, pull-down hangers and tilting laundry baskets. Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood

A greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage

Page 24

to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and efficient loss of excess heat. Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the advantage that it can be filled with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’

are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in waterbutt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Overbury Bowling Club's season-ending championships & charity fundraising With just 1 point separating Overbury Bowling Club from the leaders in the South Worcestershire Triples league, the final match needed to be won to secure the 2017 championship. Following a beautifully hot August bank holiday Monday, Overbury A team played the deciding match against Aston Somerville A team on a cold wet evening the very next day. It was a hard fought match during which the lead on each of the 3 rinks swung both ways, resulting in Overbury winning one rink with an insufficient margin to secure the overall match win. Overbury Bowling Club ended the 2017 league as runners up with Aston Somerville taking the championship. Two days previously, Overbury held their Club Championship Finals Day on a beautifully sunny and hot day. Dan Mason and Stu Yapp had another very hard fought match with Dan securing the Men's

Championship 21 - 20 on the last end. The Men's Handicap was a repeat match for Dan and Stu with Dan winning the match on a final end shoot out. The Ladies Championship had to be postponed when one of the contenders found herself on the wrong side of a hospital bed and the other did not want to claim a walkover victory in those circumstances. In the Men's Pairs, Mike Mace and Neil Williams beat Albert England and Dan Mason 21 10, the scoreline not reflecting the close and hard won match play. The Ladies 2 wood championship was played earlier with Jan Newton and Barbara Baldwin winning over Daphne Hayward and Gillian Pearce. In the Mixed Pairs, Stu Yapp and Daphne Hayward triumphed 23 - 14 over Barry and Sue Robinson. Pete Jones became the Veterans Champion when he defeated Tony Brown 21 - 15. Mike Ames, the Club Championships Organiser,

said: "Well done to all the finalists who provided some top class bowls throughout the day. It was a superb Men's Singles Final which went all the way to the wire. Stu and Dan then kept the standard going in the Men's Singles Handicap where Stu almost got revenge but an excellent draw by Dan on a 'shoot out' end gave him a second title of the day." As a complete change from competitive bowls, Overbury Bowling Club put on a 'Have-a-Go' stand at the Winchcombe Country Show to not only raise the profile of the sport of bowls and the club itself but also to raise funds for the Show which are then distributed to local charitable organisations. The stand attracted people from far and wide. The closest came from a house adjoining the show ground whilst the furthest came from Australia. The Show is certainly on the world stage and now so is Overbury Bowling Club! To the hundreds of people who came by the stand, bowling club members Mike & Sandy Mace, Albert & Dot England and Pete Jones introduced the sport and raised ÂŁ144 for the show's funds. It was a long, very tiring but immensely rewarding, day. Even though bowls is perceived to be a retirement activity, many of the younger generation enjoyed their taster session and, hopefully, will take up the sport, helping with the future continuity of all bowling clubs. Whilst league matches provide focus and excitement, Overbury Bowling Club members can practice, receive coaching, play friendly matches and/or just socialise at the club or in the licensed bar. Whenever the green is not allocated to maintenance, matches or club activities, it is available for members to use for practice or to receive organised coaching. For anyone who has wondered if bowls might be the challenge they seek, come along and try it out with the help of one of our coaches to get you started on the right path. New members, both young and senior, are always welcome to join in this very social and sporting activity. The club has both equipment and qualified coaches to get the inexperienced up and running quickly and to iron out those annoying problems which can affect one's game. For more information, contact Overbury Bowling Club at info@overburybowling.net or one of the club officials listed on www.overburybowling.net

We all know our passwords probably aren’t strong enough, but remembering complex passwords is difficult. The solution? A password manager. Apps such as 1Password or LastPass create a secure vault to store passwords on your computer, and when they’re needed they’re filled out automatically. Best of all, you can synchronise passwords across your various devices, so a password saved to your computer is available on your phone. Apple offers its service via iCloud Keychain, allowing you to store and sync passwords between Macs, iPads and iPhones. The real benefit of these services is that they generate really strong passwords, so you don’t have to come up with them yourself or remember impossiblesounding combinations of letters and characters. But don’t forget the golden rule: never use the same password on more than one site or service.

Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
