Local Magazines Published by Glos Directories - connecting local businesses with local people
Dear Reader, Welcome to the March issue of your local community magazine which is packed full of local businesses and fantastic local events, should you be stuck for something to do. March is a busy month with Mother’s Day on the 11th and Good Friday on the 30th. If you enjoy horse racing, then the Cheltenham Festival, which runs from Tuesday the 13th until Friday the 16th, is bound to be highlighted in your diary! Spring is on its way now and as I drive around, I can start to see the daffodils appear, adding a gorgeous splash of colour to the grass verges - it's a sight I really look forward to every year! As we head into Spring, please remember that the clocks go forward 1 hour on Sunday 25th March! If you have a local business and would like to include it in this or any of our neighbouring magazines, please email or call our office to request a Media Pack. If you are a local event organiser, don’t forget that we can publicise your event in our 'What’s On' section. Best wishes, Vicky Muller

I learnt very quickly to politely decline more often than not!
It makes me feel old now to remember my first experiences of central heating. My mates were embarking on a six-week summer holiday at the end of the school term and much to their amusement, at the tender age of 16, I joined British Gas South Western (as it was known then) as a gas apprentice. At the time John Major was the Prime Minister, Jimmy Nail was at the top of the music charts with ‘Ain’t no doubt’, Wayne’s World was at the cinema and the first-generation Ford Mondeo was launched! Yes folks, I’m no spring chicken! My abiding memory of the first day was the highly developed technique engineers had of consuming hot beverages in every property they visited. Eight cups of tea on my first day, each with 2 sugars, was in fact a conservative effort compared to the seasoned professionals! As I sat on the passenger seat, above the somewhat unpredictable suspension of my engineer’s Austin Maestro van during a very long journey home from the Cotswolds,
Over the past 26 years, I have seen some astounding changes in the heating industry. Gas boilers have changed from cast iron lumps with rudimentary controls to stylish, sophisticated machines with a plethora of accessories. I left British Gas after 10 years and worked for Worcester Bosch followed by Vaillant Group and latterly Ideal Boilers as a subcontractor. It was at this point I realised there was a gap in the market for a business offering all the expertise of the big organisations without the ‘big’ price tag. Red Panda Heating was born! We provide expert fault diagnostics, servicing and installation of all gas appliances, central heating systems, hot water systems, oil boilers and renewable technology. Our first employee, Matt Bygrave joined us following 18 years’ experience with British Gas, giving us an impressive combined 44 years knowledge between the two of us. We offer the customer service I remember from my early experiences in the industry, where the quality of workmanship and the customer experience was paramount. For example, you might think a boiler service is ‘standard’, regardless of which Gas Safe business completes it for you. Sadly, this is not the case! The consumer champion Which? recently published a report highlighting the vast differences between boiler services from
different businesses and, in fact, only a very small minority completed all the checks required. A boiler service takes us on average 90 minutes and I would challenge anyone to find a more comprehensive and reassuring process. We know that a service is our opportunity to ensure the boiler meets all the safety standards whilst pre-empting any future problems. Every boiler is set up as per the manufacturer’s instructions and we will advise you of any recommendations without any pressure at all for you to proceed. Every customer receives a fully comprehensive service report and if your boiler requires it, we will validate the warranty for the following year. Due to our vast experience, we are approved by numerous boiler brands and can offer preferential warranties due to our unique relationships. In 2016 we introduced an online booking tool enabling customers to select their own service appointments, with no charge until the job is complete. We narrow the arrival time to just 2 hours and can phone 30 minutes before, leaving you to get on with the more important things in life!

Cake and Bake Banana and Walnut Loaf If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then don’t bin them – just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.
Ingredients: • 175g unsalted butter, softened • 175g light soft brown sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground mixed spice • ½ tsp baking powder • 3 medium eggs • 75g walnut halves, roughly chopped • 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with 2 tsp lemon juice • Icing sugar, to dust
Makes 10 Slices Ready in 1 hour 45 minutes, plus cooling time Page 8
1.
Preheat the oven to 170C, Fan 150C, Gas 3. Grease and line the base and the two long sides of a 900g loaf tin with baking paper.
2.
Place the butter, sugar, flour, spice, baking powder and eggs in a large bowl and beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined - this will take about 4-5 minutes. Fold in the walnuts and mashed bananas.
3.
Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 1hour - 1 hour 15 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.
4.
Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and cool completely. Dust thickly with icing sugar.
TIP Add a creamy soft frosting instead of the dusting of icing sugar, if liked. Simply beat 100g full-fat soft cheese with 100g very soft unsalted butter until smooth, then beat in 100g sifted icing sugar.

Local author’s debut book: The Place Between Two Heart Beats Nathan Isbourne (pseudonym) was born in Winchcombe in March 1960 – his first bed, as he remembers it, being the bottom drawer of a chest of drawers in his parent’s bedroom. Early memories are of crab apple scrumping in the orchard above Barnmeadow Road and catching frogs and newts near the top of Langley Hill. He passed through the usual educational route of Winchcombe’s Nursery, Infants and Primary Schools, none of which are there anymore, except as memories when one walks past them, before moving on to the old Technical High School on Gloucester Road in Cheltenham, and then to Bourneside School when it opened in 1972. There are probably quite a few people in Winchcombe who will have fond memories of the daily bus trip to and from school with Mr Fogherty at the wheel of his blue Castleways double-decker. The rumour was he had a bottle of whiskey under his seat, which was the reason why the bus often went around the corners on two wheels, but that’s also probably just boys’ talk for more than once he had to slam on the brakes, get everyone back in their seats, and restore law and order. Nathan Isbourne’s book is a multi-faceted, poetic metaphor where two ‘dead’ protagonists meet for the second time. Sergeant Paul T. James is a career soldier whose life and love is the military; Yahya is a surprisingly well-educated and well-intentioned mountain dweller of Middle Eastern origin. On their first meeting, James shot and killed Yahya before he himself was killed in action in a desert fire-fight. Through their interactions, they begin to understand the other much more deeply and questions about war and peace, about pacifism and belligerence, enter the soldier's mind that would not have done so otherwise. Ultimately, he is being asked to exchange the power of his weapons for the power of his voice. The name Isbourne is in his pseudonym due to its timeless nature. It’s been there since long before any of our ancient ancestors arrived; it wound its way through the valley when the valley was still no more than a swampy marsh; if you put your fingers into it, you can feel the history of the various mills, weavers’ cottages, tragic duckings, musket-bearing Cromwellian soldiers; the children swimming in the pool to the right of Castle Street; the water feeding into the long gone vineyards. He believes ‘Isbourne’ is a far more appropriate name than his own. The title of the book ‘The Place Between Two Heart Beats’ is aptly chosen as, though Sergeant James was killed in the story, he was also brought back to life by Army doctors. Hence, everything
that happened to him at length while dead, literally occurred within the space of two heart beats. The inspiration for the book comes from a variety of sources. After studying at university in London, Isbourne’s work and an irresistible interest in different cultures took him around the world, including over a decade in the Middle East. He was not only a perennial traveller, but a perennial ‘meeter’ of new people, people of the world who he believes should all be living together with respect, understanding and acceptance. Without question, his time in the Middle East has had a strong influence on the book’s narrative. The book is set both in, around and ‘above’ Winchcombe and it may be pleasurable to the local reader to see how many places they recognize as they turn its pages. Winchcombe comes naturally to the story, perhaps due to its familiarity to Isbourne, perhaps due to it being in the deepest part of him. The cover picture was taken at a point just under Bluebell Wood, a spot that was visited by the protagonists in the story. ‘The Place Between Two Heat Beats’ is available via amazon.co.uk both in Kindle and paperback form. Isbourne’s second book, ‘Soldier Tom: a hundred years on’, will appear later this year. It takes place mostly in the First World War, but also over the almost timeless period of millennia. It is written to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI.

Return to Broadway On Good Friday 30th March, the first passenger train since 1960 will draw into Broadway station. This will be a celebration of forty years' hard work by volunteers and supporters of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway who have been re-laying track and building stations from Cheltenham Racecourse station along the route of the former GWR main line to Birmingham. As the photographs show, not only has new track been laid to reach Broadway, but there a replica station has been built from scratch; another testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of hundreds of volunteers. To mark this milestone, I have delved into the archives to discover an account in the Cheltenham Chronicle of the original opening of the line into Cheltenham on 1st August 1906. “8.05am and 8.51am ought to be figures easily remembered in connection with the full opening of the Honeybourne branch, for they are the times in the morning at which the first train ran out of St James'-square Cheltenham, and of the one that came into it. Precisely to time, rail motor-car No.69, with trailer No.6, departed without any ceremony. There were six passengers – three for Bishop's Cleeve, two for Gotherington, and one for Winchcombe. The first train in, No.65 car with No.24 trailer, brought in a goodly freight of 51 passengers, about a dozen of whom came from Evesham, and all were through bookings. It was found that one lady
Broadway station soon after its opening in 1904. It was still unfinished; note the pile of gravel on the platform (Ian Crowder: GWSR) who wanted to go to Birmingham had got into this car by mistake, and was sent back by the next car to Honeybourne for her connecting train. It is interesting to note that Mr R.E. Steel, solicitor of Cheltenham, who was one of the first passengers by the in-train, was also a first passenger from Cheltenham when the Banbury line was opened [1881], and through the Seven Tunnel [1886]. The bookings by the second out-train, at 10.01am, numbered 18, Bishop's Cleeve taking three, Bretforton one, Campden two, Gotherington three, Honeybourne six, Stratford one, and Winchcombe two. Two rail motors will for the present work the traffic. The one, starting from Cheltenham at 8.05am will run via Honeybourne to Moreton in Marsh and return and do a journey to and from Evesham and finish up with a return one to Honeybourne, ending at Cheltenham at 7.18pm. The other car will run chiefly between Evesham and
The magnificent replica station nearing completion when this article was written (Ian Crowder: GWSR) Page 14
Cheltenham, via Honeybourne, doing four journeys, the first being at 7.33am and the fourth ending at 9.51pm. There will be two goods trains each way between Honeybourne and Gloucester. From four to four and a half hours are allowed for each journey, including calls and stops at the several stations.” Interestingly none of these early passengers either came from or travelled to Broadway! But the Gloucester Citizen showed itself already to be alive to the tourist potential. On the opening of the line it commented: “The new line passes through a district rich in picturesque scenery and historic interest. The pretty village of Broadway affords many pleasant examples of stone-built houses with quaint decorative qualities.” From the end of this month, you too will be able to travel there by train to enjoy the picturesque scenery and the pretty village.

Guided Walks of Historic Winchcombe These popular and successful free guided walks started in 2013 and have gone from strength to strength ever since. They are led by local people who are keen to share some of the history of Winchcombe and their enthusiasm for this special town.
if we have sufficient notice, these have been very successful in the past.
The 2018 season will start on Easter Sunday, 1st of April 2018. The tours take place at 11.00am and 2.30pm every Sunday from Easter until the end of October. If visitor or resident, everyone who is interested can join and learn more about the fascinating history of Winchcombe – from ancient Saxon Borough to WW2 and beyond. The walks are short (less than a mile) and easy, designed to be accessible to all. They last 1–1¼ hours and use pavements around the town centre. They start at the Winchcombe Tourist Information Office, so why not come along? Places are generally limited to 10 or 12, but larger parties can usually be catered for if pre-booked. We can also provide bespoke tours for interested groups at other times
We are always happy to welcome new people to join our band of enthusiastic volunteer guides. As well as sharing the story of Winchcombe it is also a really interesting way to meet visitors from all over the world. So, if you live in or near Winchcombe and are interested in its history and can spare just a few hours a year, why not think about joining our band of volunteer guides in helping to lead these walks? No experience is necessary; just an interest in and love of our town and a willingness to share this with visitors. You would be given training and support and be able to accompany a more experienced guide initially. Further information can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre in Winchcombe - in person; by phone on 01242 602925; or email winchcombetic@tewkesbury.gov. uk. Alternatively, you can email winchwalks.13@gmail.com.

Home & Interiors Spring Clean with Style

Sweep, brush, wash and scrub. When spring sunlight shows up the corners of your home that need attention, it’s time to pop on your pinny and get to work. And cleaning is so much more enjoyable when the tools you use are both efficient and good-looking.
Tips for efficienT cleaning • For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it. Page 18

Puckrup Hall Golf Club rounds off charity partnership on £19,000 high
for a fun afternoon to enjoy a pig roast, bouncy castle and a vintage ice-cream van, which attracted as many grownups as children!” “The party was followed by a presentation of the winners of the day, a raffle and auction which altogether raised £9420 for Sue Ryder. Everyone involved in organising the day was thrilled with how generous everyone was.”
Front row left to right: Men's captain Phil Schiaffino, Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Community Fundraising Manager Kelly Rumble and Ladies' Captain Ros Fenny Back row left to right: Club members Andrew Pearson, Sam Schiaffino and Jo Colman as they presented their final fundraising cheque at the hospice The Captains, members and families of Puckrup Hall Golf Club in Tewkesbury have recently rounded off a year of incredible fundraising by presenting Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice with a cheque for £19,423.55! The club captains both took the decision of supporting the local hospice as their charity of the year after visiting and hearing first-hand about the specialist care the hospice gives. Men’s Captain Phil Schiaffino said, “Sue Ryder have supported many of the past and present captains, members, families and friends of the club, both directly and indirectly. Neil Annis, a member of the Hospice at Home Team at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, is a close friend and member of Puckrup so we knew firsthand the amazing work Sue Ryder do.” Teeing off their fundraising activities with a Captain’s drive in and drive out in January last year, held at the stunning course on the outskirts of Tewkesbury, the Men’s and Ladies’ captains Phil Schiaffino and Ros Fenney have supported the hospice by organising a year-long programme of fundraising events and activities at the club. Charity quiz nights, raffles, auctions, a Captains’ Day and a charity dinner in November coupled with matchPage 20
funding from employers and a very generous anonymous donation have seen the club raise over £19,000 for the local hospice. Phil adds, “My wife, Sam Schiaffino with my sister Jo Colman and Andrew Pearson have also manned the Halfway House, a shed between the 8th and 14th holes, serving tea, coffee, cakes and savouries 28 times throughout the year raising funds for the hospice. Allegedly they serve the best bacon rolls in the county and a quarter of a tonne of bacon was cooked on two camping stoves over the year!” Sam said “We couldn’t have done all the baking ourselves so we asked the members and their partners to support us which they all did in abundance. We were overwhelmed to have had this support and felt that it made our fundraising year inclusive to members and non-members alike.” Phil added, “The highlight of the year was Captains’ Day which was a day for all the members, their families and friends. The halfway house was open and there were competitions on various holes around the course to support fundraising and we roped in our families and friends to help out on the day. Once the golf was finished members’ families and friends met up
“Sam’s employer, Npower, matched £500 of funding and we also received match-funding of £2,900 from Zurich who is Jo’s employer. We are all so proud to have been involved with the fundraising which would not have been as successful as it was without the support from our baking community and the extra pairs of hands we roped in – both members and non-members. Our final total was very close to £20,000 and well ahead of the £15,000 target we had set ourselves." Kelly Rumble, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We are absolutely blown away by the kindness and generosity of the Captains and members of Puckrup Golf Club raising this incredible amount for our hospice. This will help our team of expert nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, family support workers and volunteers deliver over 1,080 hours of care for local people living with life-limiting conditions. It will make a huge difference to local families and for this everyone at the hospice shares their heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported the club in their fundraising over the past year.” For more information on Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice visit sueryder.org/Leckhampton For more information on the Puckrup Hall Golf Club visit www.puckruphallgolfclub.co.uk

From now on these articles will be concentrating on individual programmes and presenters, old and new. It seems sensible to begin with vintage programmes which have been part of the output of the station from the start.
24/7-broadcasting, one of the first shows on air was Philip’s 'Carousel'. This two-hour show soon became a popular Friday morning feature and can be heard between 10.00am and 12 noon every week. It consists of popular music from the golden days of light radio and features dance bands, light orchestras and more. Philip’s coverage is wide-ranging and often includes classics such as The Black and White Minstrels, Uncle Mac and Leroy Anderson. The music in Philip’s shows is interspersed with chatty information and “jokes” (groan, groan) which he insists are sent to him by his listeners of which he has many (as is evident by the regular comments the station receives). Philip's show is simply a vital part of Friday mornings.
Philip Arkell at the Radio Winchcombe Presenter’s Desk Philip Arkell is, of course, more than just a presenter. He is the President of Radio Winchcombe, currently acting Station Manager and backup technician for all the equipment at the station. Without Philip, there would be no Radio Winchcombe. He was responsible for setting up the station in 2005 with an occasional licence from OFCOM, which allowed two broadcasts a year. When Radio Winchcombe achieved full-time status in 2012 and began
The second programme featured in this month's article is even older than 'Carousel'. 'Focus' started airing around 2006 and introduced serious material to the early Radio Winchcombe schedule. It is an interview programme and has always included subjects of serious local interest. One of its earliest presenters was Barbara Herod, who has continued to produce the programme ever since. In 2012 it became a regular hour-long feature, following 'Carousel' at 12 noon on Fridays with repeats on Mondays at 12.00pm and now Tuesdays at 6.00pm. Richard Slessor currently assists Barbara in the preparation of the programme interviews. A popular monthly topic is the Winchcombe Town Council. A Councillor, usually
Richard Slessor, Laurence Robertson MP and Barbara Herod in the Radio Winchcombe studio Ron Harrison, regularly comes to the studio to update listeners on the monthly Council Meeting and representatives of Tewkesbury Borough Council and Gloucestershire County Council also give informative sessions from time to time. A recent visitor to the studio was, for example, Tewkesbury MP Laurence Robertson, who answered questions asked by Barbara and Richard. Other topics have included the Fire Service, Winchcombe History and Museum, snow clearance on footpaths, the Medical Centre, local schools, Gretton Science Day, GWSR, the Winchcombe Festival of Music and Arts, Recycling, Vale Wildlife Rescue and the work of various local charities. We always welcome ideas and suggestions for future programmes and guests and even welcome new presenters – training will be provided, of course. So remember, listen to these vintage Radio Winchcombe programmes every Friday morning: CAROUSEL: 10.00am - 12.00 noon FOCUS: 12.00 noon - 1.00pm - Written by Barbara Herod

Get Your Soil into Shape by Pippa Greenwood
A fundamental garden need is good quality soil; it is key to bigger flowers and heavier crops. And there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be useful, as it can save work with heavy clay soil. If you roughly dig or fork it over, the frost will act on the large lumps of clay and break them down somewhat, making them more manageable. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet, especially if the soil is clay or slightly heavy loam. If you can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and reduce damage. Forking a heavy soil rather than digging with a spade will reduce compaction, but either way the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. Re-forking, breaking up the large lumps, followed by a final raking will help you get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost helps feed the soil naturally Page 24
and improves its texture, so that it holds the right amount of moisture for as long as possible – and there is still time to fork this in now. Create free organic matter by making a compost heap or bin, and turn autumn leaves into lead mould, a wonderful soil conditioner. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit – it can damage or kill garden plants. If you have lots of small stones or larger lumps of flint in your soil, remove them before planting your flowers and vegetables. Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can result in forked or deformed root vegetables. Alternatively, invest in raised beds and fill them with stonefree soil. Manure adds both texture and food for your plants. It should be good quality, with few additives, and free from weeds, especially troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years, manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control weeds in pastureland has devastated plants. Try to buy from
someone local who you can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure must be well-rotted – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed and condition your soil, and help suppress weeds and protect the soil from wind erosion. They work especially well on parts of the garden where plants are not grown year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil to rot down. Sow seeds later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in the spring accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, biocontrols, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer ideas and ethos are very much alive in the 22 centres around the country today.
The idea for the Maggie’s charity came from a lady called Maggie Keswick Jencks in Edingburgh. Maggie was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and whilst she felt that the doctors who looked after her and the treatments she received were fantastic, she also felt that once diagnosed she had nowhere to go where she could have space and time to think, talk and get support. In 1996, the first Maggie’s centre was opened in Edinburgh. Sadly, Maggie (despite being involved in the design and planning of the centre) died shortly before the centre opened but her thoughts,
Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Cheltenham is a place people can go to for help and support with any of the problems or challenges that they face after a diagnosis of cancer. Under one roof, they can access cancer information from our Cancer Support Specialists (who have a nursing background), benefits advice and psycho-social support – either individually or within one of the many groups and courses we offer. These groups include a Men's club, fitness sessions, carers support courses, relaxation sessions and complementary therapies. A copy and explanation of our programme can be accessed via our website www.maggiescentres/cheltenham, our Facebook page (Cheltenham Maggies) or by coming to see us at the centre. You don’t have to make an appointment or be referred, just drop in! Everything we offer is free of charge, including the cups of tea and, of course, the cake! Come and meet our small professional team of Cancer Support Specialists, benefits advisors, psychologists and fundraisers. Maggie’s is not just about the person living with cancer but also about looking after those who
Page 26
love and support that person – be that a friend, partner, colleague, parent, child or carer. We know that carers can often feel as frightened and vulnerable as those living with the disease. Someone is diagnosed with cancer every two minutes, and it is estimated that by 2020 half of us will be affected by cancer at some point in our lives. In October, Maggie’s Cheltenham will celebrate its 8th birthday. To date we have welcomed over 60,000 people through our doors, 15,000 last year alone from across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Maggie’s philosophy is ‘don’t lose the joy of living in the fear of dying’. If you know or hear of anyone who is living with or supporting someone with cancer, please do let them know about Maggie’s – everyone with cancer should get the support they deserve! For further information please call the centre on 01242 250611 or email Centre Head Sally Hayes on sally.hayes@maggiescentres.org.

Gloucester author becomes a bestseller Gloucester author Rachel Sargeant’s latest novel, The Perfect Neighbours, published in December 2017, has reached the top ten in the Kindle bestseller charts, and number one in the British and Irish Kindle crime chart. The novel explores the tensions that arise when a newcomer peers below the polite veneer of an apparently close-knit, expat community and finds something toxic buried beneath. When Helen Taylor moves to Germany with her loving husband Gary, she can’t wait to join the community of British teachers from the local International School. But her new start is about to become her worst nightmare and Helen quickly discovers that the perfect neighbours tell the perfect lies. As soon as the charming family across the way welcomes Helen into their home, she begins to suspect that all is not as it seems. Her unease turns to panic when Gary starts to behave strangely and a child goes missing, vanished without a trace. It’s not long before violence and tragedy strike.
With cracks appearing in the cosy neighbourhood, Helen realises her perfect neighbours are capable of almost anything. The book is available from Amazon and the HarperCollins website.

Here is one of our 5-star reviews. For more, please visit www.yell.com and search for MRE Contracts. Cloakroom refitting with building works to accommodate a shower. “An excellent job that started and finished on time. Moreover Matt had allowed sufficient margin for including significant additional work we requested. A good team who adapted to circumstances and tried to minimise the inevitable dust and mess. Highly recommended.”
