« WIN £30 or £50 IF IT'S FOR CHARITY«

EASIEST COMPETITION EVER!

The last big part of the monthly cycle is to have the magazine delivered. Where we can we’ll deliver it door-to-door, but we also leave copies to be picked up from various shops and other outlets. For the door-to-door deliveries, when we’ve been short of distributors or are trying a new area, I’ve occasionally covered a route or two myself. Although it’s quite pleasant to be outside (except when (a) it's snowing, (b) there's a heatwave) it’s also quite physical work, so I’m very appreciative of the effort our wonderful team put in for us. Nevertheless, it’s important

How to enter To enter we need you to send in just four pieces of information: ▪ Your name ▪ Your phone number or email address ▪ Your address (or just your postcode if you prefer) ▪ And whether your copy was delivered or picked up You can send this information: By email to comp@glosdirectories.co.uk By text to 07520 634433 Call 01242 388369 to leave a message on the competition answerphone The deadline for entry is the 20th May. to ensure you are getting the magazines by one method or another. So could I ask for your help in tracking this? Short Story Paws for Comfort By Jackie Brewster “Are you Ian, the bellboy?” An elegant lady in a tweed cape strode into the hotel ballroom, startling Ian, who’d been busy admiring his hair from every angle in the mirrored walls. Behind her another lady in an anorak, wrestling a nylon men’s suit carrier in her arms, struggled to keep up. Ian nodded warily. He’d already carried one old lady’s luggage to the second floor and that seemed like quite enough work for one day. “You’ll do perfectly,” she said, and turned to her companion. “Dolly, don’t you think he has the look of a young Liberace?” “Very handsome, Val,” the lady nodded emphatically. Ian instinctively smoothed his hair. “So that’s settled,” Val said. “You’ll do it.” “Do what?” Ian was alarmed. As a rule, he tried to do as little as possible. “We’re holding a fashion show in the hall and our model has let us down.” She smiled demurely. “I assume you have catwalk experience?” “A bit.” Ian’s gran had once entered him into a beautiful baby contest, so he knew that the world of fashion was just waiting to discover him. He frowned. “I’ll have to ask my manager.” “Don’t worry yourself about that,” Val said. “I’ve already cleared it with Mr Fulsome; he’s delighted with the arrangement.” Ian was surprised to hear this 6

because the air between him and Mr Fulsome had been frosty ever since Ian had been caught taking selfies in the honeymoon suite Jacuzzi. “What would I have to do?” Ian asked. “Imagine New York fashion week,” Val raised two manicured hands to set the scene, “and you’re the star of the show.” Ian’s eyes lit up.

In a few excited taps of his phone Ian alerted the world to his big catwalk debut.

“Where’s my manners?” she laughed. “Let me introduce our designer, Dolly Cramp.”

“Right, let’s get you into your outfit.” Val clapped her hands. “Dolly, hand over the suit.”

Dolly shuffled forward and awkwardly shook Ian’s hand, while trying not to lose control of the suit carrier.

“You want me to change here?” Ian asked; this was all happening very fast.

“You’re just perfect for my outfit.” She grinned as though unable to take her eyes off him. Ian had seen fashion designers in magazines but none of them looked like Dolly Cramp. He hoped the grubby anorak she was wearing wasn’t one of her designs. “The local TV station is here already,” Val added, “so you’ll get lots of exposure.” “What?” Ian suddenly felt excited. “Where?” Val pointed to the ballroom exit. “Just through those doors.” “Have I got time to let my friends know?” Ian pulled out his phone. Nothing was going to stop him announcing his big break in fashion. “Be my guest!” Val cried. “Get it out on social media, and everyone will see you on the teatime news.”

“We’ve seen it all before,” Dolly grinned, offering him the bag, “haven’t we Val?” “Let’s turn our backs anyway, Dolly?” Val said. “Give the lad his dignity.” Ian unzipped the bag, and a long brown garment of furry padded fabric came tumbling out. “What’s this?” He thought there must be a mistake. “It looks like a onesie?” “It’s the star of my Paws for Comfort range,” Dolly called over her shoulder. “Incredibly snuggly, and it makes the wearer look like a gerbil. Will you need a hand with the tail?” Ian held up the costume in horror and wondered whether he could make a run for it while their backs were turned. “And be quick,” Val added. “The cameras are rolling just outside.”

Sudeley Castle’s Treasures Treasures from Sudeley Castle’s 1,000-year history are featured in a new exhibition called ‘Royal Sudeley 1,000, Trials, Triumphs and Treasures’. Among the collection of priceless objects and curiosities are a tragic queen’s love letters, a Victorian pedometer and a long-lost Roman stone God previously thought missing for more than 100 years and later found hidden away in a cupboard at Sudeley Castle. The exhibition also includes a one-of-a-kind, life-size glass-engraved portrait of Katherine Parr by critically acclaimed artist John Hutton, which was re-discovered during the refurbishment of a holiday cottage on the estate.

It is the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds – Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. www.sudeleycastle.co.uk

Numerous items of historical significance are also on display, such as a lock of Katherine Parr’s hair, her prayer book and an intricate lace christening canopy believed to have been worked on by Anne Boleyn for the Christening of her daughter Elizabeth I. “The exhibition really brings Sudeley’s history to life,” said Wendy Walton, the new general manager at Sudeley. Wendy added: “To further enhance the visitor experience, we have used technology to create some impressive new features, such as an ‘invisible’ Page 9

Local Event

Classic Car Event at Prescott Hill Climb - 13th May The 13th of May will see the 15th annual Classic Car Event take place at the Bugatti Owners Club at Prescott. The event is organised by Cleeve Vale Rotary Club and the proceeds will go to Rotary-sponsored local, national and international charities. The event is unique in that the majority of the cars which take part are a minimum of 25 years old. Some are much older and not usually seen on the road. Last year, for example, the first car up the hill was a 1904 Oldsmobile. There are 200 entrants, from all over the UK and this year 8 from the Netherlands; who make a donation to run up the hill, however, this is neither a race nor a time trial. Like most Prescott events, it's an opportunity for enthusiasts and the general public to see a little bit of history. Before and after the entrants "drive the hill", the cars can be viewed in the Paddock and there is also a static display of classic cars in the Orchard where the public can view these beautiful machines at close quarters and chat to their owners.

Cleeve Vale, leads the event organisation and has done so for the last 10 years. Almost ÂŁ250,000 has been raised over the years, a testament to Geoff's dedication, knowledge and sheer hard work. The event is open to the public with the gates opening at 9.00am. The first car up the hill will be at 10am. At 2.00pm a cavalcade of all the cars from the static display travel up the hill. There is ample car parking available for spectators for a donation of ÂŁ15 per car which covers parking and entrance for occupants. There is also plenty of space to picnic whilst watching the day's events. In addition to the event on Sunday, there is also the Classic Cotswolds Car Tour on Saturday 12th May. Around 50 classic cars will follow a pre-planned tour of the North Cotswolds before motoring down to the Classic Motor Hub near Bibury to view the exhibition of classic cars and enjoy afternoon tea.

The prime organiser of the event is Cleeve Vale Rotary Club and this year Winchcombe Rotary Club has taken an active role in supporting the ongoing success of this event. Geoff Kimber, a longstanding member of Page 13

A Plea: Please Stop Being So Courteous This is a plea to all well-meaning drivers out there, who act with intended courtesy but are rewriting the Highway Code in doing so. Here are two examples that regularly happen to me: 1. You are turning right off a main road, your exit is clear and you are waiting for the oncoming car to go past on a clear road. But the other driver stops on the carriageway and flashes their lights to let you go. 2. You approach a roundabout and stop to give way to the car on the roundabout, but the driver stops on the roundabout to let you enter it. These actions may appear to be well meaning as the driver is interrupting their journey to let you continue yours, but these “unselfish” acts contravene the Highway Code.

Rule 172: “You must give way at a Give Way” sign”. Rule 185: “When reaching a roundabout you must give priority to traffic approaching from the right, unless directed otherwise by signs, road markings or traffic lights” (Note: not a car slowing and flashing its lights). Apart from the confusion caused, these actions are classic “bash for cash” ploys too: the ‘wellmeaning’ driver slows and flashes lights, you go, they floor it, you drive into them. They say it’s your fault. Over to the insurance companies. The Highway Code may appear to be clunky in places but it’s a set of rules that means we all know what to expect and can act accordingly. Please, please stick to the Highway Code. I’ll happily wait for you to pass and we all know where we are. Safe driving!

The Birth of a Railway

Demolition at Winchcombe in July 1979

By David Aldred

The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway is now open all the way from Cheltenham to Broadway. For this month's article I thought it might be interesting to discover how the heritage railway came into being. The death knell for the Cheltenham to Honeybourne railway line was sounded in March 1968. The last regular passenger train was withdrawn by British Rail so that only goods trains and the occasional passenger train, diverted from the main Bristol to Birmingham line, travelled the route. Its end, however, dragged on, despite the obvious fact that British Rail was losing money keeping it open for the few trains which used it. Matters nearly came to a head in June 1972 when it announced the line would be closed on 1 January 1974. This news got Cheltenham councillors very excited and they spent ÂŁ60,000 on a report into the feasibility of building a north to south relief road on the abandoned track. Imagine their dismay when less than a year later British Rail changed its mind! Trains continued to run. On 25 August 1976, the unexpected happened. Several wagons of a goods train travelling to South Wales derailed just outside the site of Winchcombe station, damaging a stretch of track. British Rail decided not 16

to repair the damage. It offered the track and the land to an embryonic Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway Society, which had been started by just four visionaries who hoped to keep the line intact. Not surprisingly this small society could not afford the purchase, and so it was ironical that three years later in July 1979 when funds had been promised, British Rail changed its mind for a second time, declaring it wanted to keep the route open, despite already removing the rails! Then in August just a year later British Rail changed its mind for a third time! Its chairman Sir Peter Parker announced it was prepared to sell the line because of the financial problems it was facing. The society immediately started negotiations with a view to initially reopening the stretch from Toddington to Honeybourne. There was great enthusiasm for the project with over 700

people attending a meeting in Shaftesbury Hall in the centre of Cheltenham in February 1981 when the society first appealed for volunteers. Tim Bazeley, the secretary, painted for the audience an ambitious future as a tourist and community railway possessing thirty-five steam locomotives in this respect subsequent events indicated that enthusiasm outran realism! However, there was enough enthusiasm to ensure wheels began to turn the very next month. A company was set up to raise capital for the purchase, and both the company and its supporters still continue to manage their developments and finances carefully and prudently to ensure the continuing success of the railway. In March the Toddington site was leased from British Rail so that a start could be made before the actual purchase. By early June one hundred and twenty yards of track had been laid towards Winchcombe (not Honeybourne as originally planned)

and by late June steam locomotive 2807 had arrived from the famous locomotive scrapyard at Barry for restoration; it still runs on the railway today. The first public train ran on 22 April 1984 to Didbrook. The rest, as they say, is now history – and a remarkable achievement.

Winchcombe Walking Festival 18th – 20th May The Winchcombe Walking Festival offers walkers of all abilities the opportunity to join a walk in the Cotswolds and to take in snippets of information from knowledgeable guides.

there is the 21-mile Winchcombe Way Challenge using a guidebook for navigation. This has grown in popularity over recent years and is a good training exercise for those planning a more rugged challenge later in the year.

There are full-day walks of around 13 miles some are circular, some are linear, where transport is provided. It's a great chance to participate in walks that one can't easily arrange oneself. Try a walk across the high Wolds from Winchcombe to Northleach, for example, or from Longborough to Winchcombe.

The festival is very sociable with a dinner and quiz on Friday evening and a talk about ancient paths in Gloucestershire on Saturday evening. The festival is popular so we recommend you book early as places on walks are limited.

If you are interested in history, why not come and follow ancient trading routes, discover rural crafts, find out more about Winchcombe Abbey or growing up in Winchcombe during the fifties and sixties. The walks involving the heritage railway are always popular and this year we will use the new service from Broadway. Cleeve Common has the highest point in the Cotswolds with great views across to the Forest of Dean, Black Mountains and the Malverns. Trek across this open expanse of grassland, through a butterfly reserve and the ’wilderness’ area. If you like a challenge and some map reading,

“The Winchcombe Walking Festival is a significant event in the Cotswold calendar”, says Sheila Talbot, Chair, Winchcombe Walkers are Welcome. “Since its inception in 2010, this community-led initiative has attracted many overseas visitors and researchers, including those from Japan, South Korea, USA and Germany, as well as many other walkers from across the UK." "Our walks have themes to enable everyone, including locals, to appreciate and understand the role of the local natural environment in the past, present and future. Guided walks range from just 1.5 miles to 13 miles and are graded from 'Easy' to 'Strenuous'; so there's truly something for everyone.” For further information visit: www.winchcombewelcomeswalkers.com Page 19

'Winchcombe Calling', which I began presenting in November 2013 at the ripe age of 54, is my first experience of radio work. It’s very much inspired by the late John Peel’s radio shows of my youth and reflects my musical taste of those times. It’s not just rock music as I also play reggae, folk, blues, country, pop, soul, jazz, world and other genres, trying to keep it somewhat eclectic. Occasionally there are special programmes based on a genre, artist, album or particular year in music. Currently, I’m celebrating 40 years of punk rock but it’s not all old music either. Admittedly, there’s plenty of nostalgia (Why not? It’s still great music!), but I do feature new artists and bands. Guest presenters and listeners often appear on the show and I’m assisted by studio engineer and erstwhile co-presenter Bronwen Williams. 'Winchcombe Calling' is broadcast live every Friday evening from 9-11pm on Radio Winchcombe and you can listen to all previous 205 shows on Mixcloud. The show also has a Facebook page so please do get in touch!

Ricotta Stuffed Pork Serves 4

Ready in 1 hour

This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side, if liked.

Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin until very thin.

• 4 thin-cut pork loin steaks

In a small bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• 175g ricotta cheese • 2 tbsp fresh chopped basil

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail stick.

• 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Heat the oil and butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4-5 minutes, turning once until browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20-25 minutes until cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Add the green beans to the frying pan and cook for 5-6 minutes until just tender.

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 15g butter • 450ml meat or vegetable stock • 4 tbsp dry sherry or apple juice • 175g green beans, trimmed • 2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted 24

5

Slice each pork roll and serve on the green beans with the pan juices and toasted pine nuts.

TIP If you don’t have fresh basil use 1 tsp dried mixed herbs and for extra flavour add a crushed garlic clove.
