In your edition of The Directory for July we focus our attention on 70 years of the NHS, which was established in England on the 5th July 1948. At some point in our lives we have all relied on the service of our excellent health system, so our article on its anniversary concentrates on the people behind the organisation and the brilliance it provides. Elsewhere we have a full-page feature on the importance of protecting our environment by making the Solent area free from single use plastic. Locally, volunteers at the Final Straw Solent do an admirable job at engaging businesses by making their mark against the problem disposable plastic is having. Share your thoughts on #SayNoToPlastic with us on social media. Concentrating on Hampshire and the surrounding areas, we signpost you to several local markets and the importance they have within our community. Team TDG are passionate about the traditional market so we met people who oversee stalls for themselves to really understand the value it has on their career and the local economy. One thing I love about markets is the chance it provides to build relationship with local producers; it’s so important! Britain’s NHS continues to drive innovations in patient care, including mechanical thrombectomy to improving stroke survival, surgical breakthroughs such as hand transplants, and bionic eyes to restore sight. Importantly, the NHS wouldn’t have developed into what we see today if it wasn’t for the skill, compassion and dedication of staff. Play your part in making Hampshire plastic free! We’ve all seen the headlines about the huge problems single-use plastics are having on the environment. People across the nation are continually being urged to act against the use of the synthetic material. But what is the campaigning all about? Around 8 million tonnes of plastic are poured into the ocean every year. These are broken down into extremely small pieces of plastic debris known as microplastics. Microplastics pollute the environment as a result from the disposal and breakdown of consumer products and industrial waste. This is harmful to wildlife, the environment, and potentially us. By working to reduce the use of single-use plastics we are steadily protecting our environment. Locally, voluntary groups are having a huge impact on the attitude people are having towards their use of plastic. The Final Straw Solent, now working with more than 100 local businesses, are doing an excellent job at making them fight

against the use of single-use plastics. Port Solent has pledged to swap plastic for paper, businesses in Emsworth have replaced plastic bags for environmentally friendly carriers, and Havant Borough Council is encouraging residents to make swaps. Volunteers have covered many miles to raise thousands of pounds for The Rosemary Foundation. In June, nurse Louise Golledge marked her 40th birthday year by commuting 21 miles on foot from her Gosport home to the Trust’s office in Langrish, and a relay team walked from Emsworth to Basingstoke. Another team completed the “Since 1664 Yomp”, a non-stop trek along the South Downs Way, through heat, rain and lightning, to raise £7,000.

The Rosemary Foundation provides a ‘Hospice at Home’ service in East Hampshire for patients in the latter stage of life threatening conditions. Our service is free to patients and carers but we receive no statutory funding. Therefore we are hugely grateful to everyone willing to face blisters and cramp to help keep our nurses on the road. Fund raising events coming up include open days at Lavender Fields, Selborne, on 7th to 8th and 14th to 15th July, and Havant Light Opera Group is performing Gilbert and Sullivan at Blendworth Church Centre on Saturday evening, 14th July.

She is ably supported by a small established team, some of whom have been with the nursery for over 10 years. Belinda is NNEB trained and, in addition, holds a Montessori teaching diploma. She is very hands on and oversees the preparation and cooking of all the meals which are provided daily.

It sets the standards that must be met to ensure that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children’s ‘school readiness’ and gives children the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and life.

PETERSFIELD TOWN VISITOR CENTRE CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE WIDER COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY GARDEN WELCOMES THREE NEW VOLUNTEERS

A re-branded tourist information centre based at Petersfield Library has been popular in its first couple of months since its reopening. The centre closed in April after the East Hampshire District Council slashed funding, saying the use of money could have been spent elsewhere. Soon after the decision to close the centre was made, the Petersfield Town Council pledged £45,000 to keep the centre, run by Tourism South East, open for at least another year.

The Petersfield Physic Garden volunteers team has welcomed new members who will support with keeping the grounds beautiful as the summer season picks up. The privately-owned garden is open to the public free-of-charge and provides an excellent spot for everyone to enjoy. Created in a 17th Century style, the space has distinct parts laid out for different purposes.

Petersfield is labelled as a tourist gateway to the South Downs National Park. A spokesperson at the town council says the centre will become more focused on the town. They said: “We will be working with Tourism South East (TSE) to focus the efforts of the centre in becoming more town orientated, and the centre is renamed ‘Town Visitor Centre’ to reflect this change of approach.” For more information on the centre, search ‘Petersfield Town Visitor Centre’ on Facebook.
