Dan Magrill, Consultant Urologist, explains ‘World Kidney Day is an important campaign focusing on promoting awareness and encouraging good kidney health.’ Various conditions affect the kidneys and with 1 in 11 people getting stone symptoms in their lifetime, we ask Dan for tips to prevent kidney stones. Drink plenty of water - A healthy fluid intake helps flush out toxins, can reduce the risk of kidney stones and has numerous benefits for urological health. Keep hydrated, especially when engaging in activities that cause

sweating. It’s best to drink throughout the day, rather than periods of dehydration to drinking lots. Another tip is adding lemon juice to drinks, this increases the number of natural stone inhibitors in your urine. Don’t restrict your calcium intake, studies show that a normal calcium intake protects you from stone formation; a low calcium diet can increase your chance of stone formation. Foods linked to kidney stones include artificial sweeteners, acidic food and drinks and spicy foods. Most people aren’t aware that animal proteins can increase your risk of stones and are acidic. If you’re prone to kidney stones, avoid oxalate-rich foods. Foods that are reasonably high in oxalate should be taken in moderation. Avoid tinned, packet or processed foods which have a high salt content. China comes to TPS Last month, TPS welcomed 20 Chinese students from the southern province of Guangdong. Students had travelled over 5000 miles to experience life in England and find out more about what it is like to study here.

In an action-packed second week, the Chinese students also took part in various extra-curricular activities, leading our Chinese Club and a range of workshops to teach our students about Chinese culture. Students made their own lanterns and door hangings, in preparation for Chinese New Year. A successful two weeks concluded with a farewell ceremony with music and dance, where the students were presented with certificates and gifts. Everyone agreed that it had been an enriching experience which we hope to repeat in the future.

They excelled in Mathematics lessons and they were very keen to learn new languages, such as French, German and Spanish. Throughout the week, they attended debate classes, which had been organised by the English department. Petersfield • March 2019 Edition EAST HAMPSHIRE SCHOOL IS TOP OF THE COUNTY CLASS FOR READING SKILLS performing school in the county for the percentage of pupils meeting the expected standards. These fantastic results reflect the hard work and dedication of the children, and all of the amazing staff in the school.”

BURITON Primary School’s Year 6 pupils were top of the class last year, in reading, out of 496 similar schools in Hampshire. They also came second out of all the schools in maths and English, much to the delight of headteacher Danielle Brown, and school staff. Mrs Brown said: “Each year the Department for Education releases performance tables detailing Year 6 Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) results. “I am delighted to say that our pupils’ performance was outstanding, with 100 per cent meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths. “Our reading score was the highest in Hampshire, and the performance tables show that we are the second highest

Year 6 teacher Becky Green added: “We are really proud of the children, in past years the school has done consistently well in the SATs tests, but this is the best result for a while.” Additionally as part of encouraging activites other than traditional lessons, pupils at the school are undertaking a skipping challenge. Mrs Brown said: “During January the whole school will be completing a skipping task, which will involve all the pupils skipping two minutes each day for a month. “Skipping is a fantastic activity for young people; it develops heart and lung fitness, co-ordination, balance and concentration. One of the most positive aspects of this challenge is the massive improvements the children can make in a short space of time, and shows them keeping fit can be fun.” And not only will the children benefit from the challenge; money raised by the challenge through sponsorship will go towards funding British athletes.
