Editor’s Letter In this March issue, I am pleased to present a few outstanding artists to you. Amanda Hamilton who gets inspired by the visual story of the architecture of places she visits. I love the way she sees Paris! The famous Simon Kirk, with whom I had the pleasure of having an interview in which we compare my life as a pianist and his as an artist.

Anne Farrall Doyle who finds her primary inspiration from her unspoilt Pembrokeshire surroundings and her travels. She aims to capture the essential relationships of changing lights and shadows, accents of colour and simplifications of forms to carry moods and memories. What a wonderful work! James Portsmouth, a young terrific sculptor who specialises in ironwork, and who is amazingly talented at it. Lynn Gibson, a fantastic artist who gets influenced by the extremes of everyday life along with her passion for the sciences, from quantum mechanics to supernovas and who uses molten wax to create truly unique pieces. Marianne Hill who focuses on mood and feeling to create phenomenal art works. I must say that the result is quite impressive! The sensational Nigel Naylor, who has always been passionate about music and who uses musical themes to form the basis for some of his work, either in subject matter or titles. Paul Berriff whom we should thank a million for his extraordinary photographs of The Beatles! Do not miss Velvety Jazz and its jazz cats on the back cover who would certainly make your parties truly memorable! Having a soundtrack is nice, but having world-class musicians entertaining your guests is a must-have! With kind regards,

Featured in Vogue and having worked with the National Trust, what excites me is visiting a home, boat, village or view and letting myself be inspired by the visual story of the architecture and exploring my response to it. My dreamlike painting style strips away the expected norms to expose the “Through The Looking Glass” soft playful underbelly of life.

In my work I combine painting, collage and decollage (cutting or sanding away the built up surface to reveal layers below). I free associate cut up text and images to create a self contained scenario with its own reality. I’m a big fan of haiku and the gentle playfulness that helps us view everyday life with fresh eyes.

Simon Kirk’s interview with The Discerner

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

As a pianist I recall my first wish of playing the piano. My parents are amateur musicians and I always heard music at home. My father, who is an amateur violinist, tried to give me some violin lessons when I was 4 years old, but I did not enjoy playing it. I just had that burning desire to play the piano. How and when did you develop your passion for fine arts?

Simon Kirk:

That’s interesting to me because there are no musicians in my family. My grandmother had a piano in her house and would always encourage me to learn, but as I had never watched anyone actually play, it was an abstract to me. However, growing up I did have an uncle (Joel Kirk) who was already renowned wildlife artist and an aunt who was studying art at university. My grandfather (an enthusiastic artist himself) would sit and draw with me. When I started school, I was recognised as having a talent and that was extremely pleasing to me. I decided then I wanted to be an artist and that never changed. Incidentally I was also seen as having a talent for writing, which again I was delighted with. My aunt (Joy Chant) was a published author, so I had that influence too. Of course I wasn’t sophisticated enough to combine the art and the writing in any meaningful way, but they were in place from a young age.

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

In order to become a concert pianist, you must literally give up your life to music and to your instrument. Practising 8+ hours a day since a young age and attending music seminars instead of going on holiday is the lifestyle of all world-class musicians. Would you say that becoming an outstanding professional fine art artist requires the same dedication?

Simon Kirk:

There are definitely parallels. I was still developing my style up until 5 years ago (I graduated in 1999), when everything finally clicked into place. I went through traditional figurative painting, sculpture, printing… for a while colour disappeared completely from my work. It was frustrating but looking back I was collecting the skills that would allow me to finally express what I wanted how I wanted. There’s a quote by guitarist George Benson that I like to appropriate when talking about this development. He said he couldn’t express the music in his head if he didn’t learn the mechanics first, and although it’s a different discipline his words certainly rang true for me. I think all creatives will agree that you need this stamina and self-discipline to keep going. I work for many hours everyday and there’s never a quiet period. Even when I’m not physically working I’m still churning ideas around.

Celine Gaurier-Joubert:

As you mention George Benson, I understand that you love jazz. Which jazz musician, classical composer or pop artist do you feel the closest to in terms of work, and why?

Simon Kirk:

I’m pretty eclectic in my music taste, which means I can’t claim to be a buff in any one genre. I’m naturally drawn to lyricism so I love storytellers like Tom Waits and Nick Cave. I also gravitate towards musicians with compelling life stories, those raw forces that achieve mythological status like Mozart or Jimi Hendrix for example. I’m also a big fan of Public Enemy. When they started the technology didn’t exist to achieve what they wanted, so they improvised by joining tapes by hand and winding them around microphone stands to make big loops. I was hooked when I heard that - the music itself was also a sculpture, running around the studio. It’s multi-layered musical collage; being able to visualise the way the music ‘looks’ really appeals to me as an artist.

Simon Kirk exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2015, 2013 and 2010. He sells globally, notably to collectors in America, Dubai and Europe. © 2016 The Discerner Ltd. All rights reserved.
