Alexander Mihaylovich “Since the late 1980s, Los Angeles artist Alexander Mihaylovich has been creating works that deal with the fragmentation of history and memory. His most recent pieces are three-dimensional mixed media works that allude to the ephemeral nature of our own time. The juxtaposition of modern industrial fragments with painted Arcadian landscapes and classical forms points to the disjointedness of our own past as well as the complexity of understanding history and time. The layering of found materials, such as plastic or metal, obscures our ability to view the painted image and acts as a metaphor for the destruction of cultural heritage and the environment.”

George Antoni As an artist, George Antoni is primarily self taught. Although he studied art at West Ham College of Further Education, he also had an interest in drama and a three year course at E15 Acting School lead to a thirty year career in film, TV and theatre. It was only when he left London and moved to Brighton that he took up painting again, initially inspired by the expansive skies and dramatic seascapes. Although the work is ever changing, the influence of coastal life is still evident in his current works.

John Link John Link’s paintings are born of Shakespeare. A successful Theatre Director/TV producer and acting teacher over many years and now an unashamedly self-taught painter with a fast growing reputation, his unique, colourful paintings remind us vividly of the weight of human self-awareness and the mercurial nature of created figures that come out of ‘nothing’ onto the stage or canvas to tell the tragicomic paradox of being human. They hold a lightness alongside an intensity. Just as Shakespeare entertains us while at the same time making a profound analysis of human life, so does Link’s painterly vision.

Jane Emberson Sailing around the Greek islands provides the main source of inspiration for Emberson’s work. Combining her fascination with the country’s ancient past and a love of the natural world, the paintings essentially depict land masses as seen from above or below, which are interwoven with mythological themes. Using a mixture of fluid paints, plays a vital part in creating the unpredictable flow of nature in a unique and colourful way.

Kate Brinkworth I have always been fascinated by stories, a deep love of film imagery and narrative. I started to look in depth at the construction of a film: how do images go together to form a cohesive plot, which elements or scenes are crucial to this? How do light, shadow, camera angle, focus, objects and location play a part in intriguing and capturing your imagination? I originally used film scenes but soon played around with setting up small still lifes, lighting them differently, changing the focal point to emphasise a certain item and then working these into paintings. I became more involved in the process of this, enjoying the translation of light into paint, the properties of pigments and the challenge of photorealism. The fact that I can get more detail into a painting than I can from a photograph, I can enhance and play around with oversaturated colour and light. The vivid colour of the chosen objects reflecting the nature of their temptation and their glossy, sleek appeal. The dice open up questions of fate, chance and the curveball effect and perhaps these objects drew me to them by the very fact that they are caught up in forces larger than themselves.

Michelle Hold Art is my life and passion. My work is based on capturing the essence of feelings, emotions and the invisible, eternal energy that pervades the universe, focusing on beauty and it’s scarcity in current time. I am inspired by nature and new science that meets spirituality. Creating from a place of no time, no space no body. Like an architect I love to construct the images with multiple layering, but at the same time leaving space for surprise, for something unexpected to happen, where my dance like gestures encounter the vibrations of colour.

Interview with Lara Julian Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “You have a very unique background, as you were born in Siberia, you have lived in New York for a few years, and you are now in London. Could you tell me a bit more about yourself?” Lara Julian: “I have led an exciting life, traveling the world and immersing myself different cultures. Of course, I am a product of all my experiences and cultural origins; however I don’t want my work to be read through this prescriptive lens. My work is autobiographical to the extent that it externalises my personal experience of the world, however this is never reflected though narrative or iconographical paintings. Rather, I employ an abstract visual language, which I believe has far more universal resonance amongst viewers.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “When did you paint for the first time, and what was your inspiration?” Lara Julian: “My mother is an art historian and my father is an artist, so I grew up in a very creative family. I started painting at a young age, however art education in Siberia is very classical and my teachers didn’t appreciate my abstract approach to painting. I refused to conform to this traditional paradigm and so I stopped painting for many years. It was actually when I was living in New York that this dormant creative passion was reignited. I had a high-powered job in banking; however I needed a release from the world of numbers and logic, so I started meditating. It was during my meditation sessions that I started seeing vibrant swirls of colour and these visions eventually materialised in a series of paintings.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “Your work is truly stunning. What is your process of creation?” Lara Julian: “Thank you! My process of creation is very organic and spontaneous. I use acrylic paints as they are fast drying, which means I can add new layers quickly, but I never have a predetermined idea of how I want the painting to look. It’s all about texture and harmonies of colour, there isn’t a formula, rather every composition is a journey of discovery. I do tend to lay the canvas down on my studio floor and move around it while I paint. I use my whole body in the process of creation. It’s through this physical act of painting that I’m able to imbue each work with a raw sense of dynamism and ‘visual vibrations’, inviting the viewer into new realms of sensory experience.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “What are you looking for while painting? How could you describe your style?” Lara Julian: “I’m looking to express the breadth of human experience in my work. My style oscillates between figuration and abstraction.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “When I look at the work that you have produced over the years, I can clearly see an evolution. Could you tell me a bit more about the reasons behind the changes in your style?” Lara Julian: “Each painting is a type of self-portrait that corresponds with the changes occurring in my body and mind. From a technical perspective, my work evolves as I mature as an artist and develop a deeper knowledge of materials, scale and style. In my earlier paintings, I worked on a smaller scale and the works were much more figurative, but I’ve always craved to work on a larger, more significant scale. I want my abstract canvases to envelop the viewer and catalyse a potentially transformational experience.” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “You are still a young artist. What is your vision for the upcoming years?” Lara Julian: “The script is still unwritten. I’m learning each day about kind of artist I want to be and drawing inspiration from a diverse range of sources. Right now, I see myself in a creative stage, but there’s artistic metamorphosis on the horizon. Watch this space.”

Jeanine Woollard Jeanine’s work plays with the discovery of historical signifiers in the everyday, as a way of creating an alternate dimension or loop-hole. The etchings, photographs and sculptures she makes reference otherworlds and eras, borrowed from literature, art history and popular culture. Often monumental and epic in their references, they emerge from found objects, scenes and locations that are already in themselves an arrangement of unintentional props. Since graduating from her MFA at Goldsmiths in 2007, she has participated in residencies and exhibited internationally in solo and group shows. Jeanine lives and works in London.

Lorraine Christie The Artist LORRAINE J CHRISTIE is originally a native of Northern Ireland and now resides in the U.S.A. Though classically trained in London, she is essentially ‘self-taught’ CHRISTIE’S ever evolving style remains highly recognizable - edgy, yet polished, with palette knife and brush, working in unison. Her works are mainly figurative through personal experience or observation of others or their shared experiences. This interesting Artist has had exceptional Global success and brought about numerous sell-out shows and availability of works is now becoming the question. Her paintings in oil are timeless snapshots often portraying our paradoxical nature - Strength can become vulnerability, tinged with matters of the heart. The intriguing titles only add to the allure.

Andy Davey I paint as a form of free expression. I use a range of media; acrylics for their suitability to quick, dynamic “action” painting, oils for their rich depth of colour and beautiful on-canvas mixing effects and watercolours for their luminosity. My abstract paintings mostly come out of half-sleep or meditation, though sometimes they are inspired by natural landscape. I look for a compositional balance between visual “comfort” and chaos. There is for me a point of beauty between the two, though where that balance point lies and whether I ever reach that point will be subjective for each viewer.

Mark Stopforth My work over the past twenty years has been devoted to those landscapes that are associated with the untamed and wild landscapes that can be found in the Moors, Fens, Fells and Estuaries of Britain. I have carried those impressions of the sublime in the landscape that were left on me as a child growing up in the Fens of East Anglia, impressions that are still relevant to my work today. Recently it has been the vast immersive spaces of moorland, fen and river estuary that have consumed my imagination and which I wish to evoke through charcoal, pencil and oil.

Scott McLachan Scott, born in Scotland and now living in The Netherlands, was first inspired to create fantasy artwork by the likes of Chris Foss, Roger Dean and Frank Frazetta…his childhood painter heroes! Airbrush based sci-fi work was his early passion but this developed into a more general fantasy theme using acrylics and large canvases. More recently he has turned to the challenge of oils. His work always tries to capture a snapshot within the context of an event…the outcome known only to the observer. Scott shows his work at small galleries and venues where the scale of the work can be better appreciated.

Thomas Strumpel I was born in a place along the Rhine River and then some 20 years later, I studied art in Cologne, a hub for art and artists in Germany at that time. I began with drawings but now my focus is on painting. I work with very diluted watercolours, which I apply multiple layers, until depth is reached in the picture. It creates a subtle colour play. The texture of the canvas is evident and becomes part of the painting. I now live in Zurich, Switzerland and in 2015 Elten & Elten Gallery presented my work for which I enjoyed the exposure.

Michael Batey I have lived in Scotland for thirty two years and was born in Cumbria near the Lake District so you can imagine where a lot of the inspiration has come from. I paint mainly in oil in an ethereal manner painting from light to dark, none of my work is of somewhere particular it’s all in my head; I want the viewer to be transported to some place resembling or would like to find. Because I work outdoors every day I am seeing and feeling weather changes and moods especially if its stormy I seem to have the ability to remember the light.
