Editor’s Letter I am always so excited at this period of the year, as everything becomes so magical. London gets transformed into Wonderland, when the Christmas decorations come up and invitations to parties full your letter box! It is probably time to spoil yourself, and your loved ones. What do you think? Why don’t you offer yourself, or others a very unique present that can not be own by anyone else: an original painting by one of our extraordinary artists! Remember that these fantastic men and women also work on commission, so why not doing something extremely special this year! On another note, I am happy to remind those who would not have read our October issue, that Emily Carew Woodard’s solo exhibition ‘The Many Complaints of Elephants’ is taking place at 8 Duke Street, St James’s, London SW1Y 6BN, between the 22nd and the 26th of November, and that I will myself attend the preview on Monday 21st November between 6pm and 9pm. I would be delighted to meeting you there, if you wish to attend this wonderful event. Please email me directly at celine@thediscerner.com, and I will add your name to our guest list.

Interview with Celine Gaurier-Joubert The Discerner: “Celine, you are the founder and editorin-chief of The Discerner, but you are also a concert pianist. It is well-known that you run an extremely successful piano studio in Mayfair. Could you tell me more about it?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I have been instructing adult amateur pianists for almost two decades now, in Paris, Switzerland, and London, and I must admit that the piano studio is hugely successful.” The Discerner: “Can anybody join your class?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “Yes absolutely! It is open to adults from all walks of life, including lawyers, bankers, doctors, traders, investors or writers who wish to learn how to play the piano, or improve their skills, with a master pianist who specialises in teaching adults.

The Discerner: “How does that work?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I would first meet you, for an initial consultation, in order to assess your skills, and discuss your personal goals and wishes. We will then choose a convenient slot for you to attend your weekly lessons.” The Discerner: “What is the structure of the piano course?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I do not work with a set structure as each pianist is different, and requires a specific attention and dedication. I always adapt to the personality and current ability of each of my pupils, and this demands a lot of psychology. I however like being very organised, and always set goals using a result-orientated strategy whilst ensuring that your piano lessons are always varied and enjoyable.” The Discerner: “Which advices would you give to an adult who has never played before, and who thinks that he/she might not be talented, or that it is too late to start?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “I would definitely recommend not to be afraid, as I have actually never met an ‘untalented’ individual. Playing the piano is wonderful, and it could only bring joy into your life. It is extremely relaxing too, as it could certainly help relieve stress if you have a highly demanding professional activity. Your lessons will be provided in a non-judgmental environment, so there is nothing to be afraid of. Whatever you have heard in the past, I can confirm that it is never too late to start! The Discerner: “What is the next step if one wishes to start taking piano lessons with you?” Celine Gaurier-Joubert: “Simply email me at celine@thediscerner.com, and I will do my utmost to reply as soon as I can.”

Camille Walala Beginning her career as a textile designer, Camille Walala specialises in transforming spaces with a vibrant blend of colour and pattern. Seen in venues and adorning buildings across London, Sydney, New York and beyond, her designs are instantly recognisable, explode with energy and are engineered to evoke a smile in anyone who sees them. Camille is influenced by the work of the Memphis Group, South Africa’s Ndebele tribe and op-art pioneer Victor Vasarely, but her gleefully asymmetric patterns and eye-popping approach to colour are entirely her own. Her clients include schools, festivals, clubs, and international brands, and she is always on the lookout for larger-scale spaces to transform. Soon, we’ll all be living in Walaland – and a good thing too: it’s a happy place.
